Background: The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented restrictions on children’s ability to participate in adequate movement behaviours. This international longitudinal study compared young children’s physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep behaviours before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: Parents of children aged 3-5 years, from 14 countries (8 low- and middle-income countries, LMICs) completed surveys to assess changes in physical activity, sedentary behaviour (screen-time) and sleep and how these changes were associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Surveys were completed in the 12 months up to March 2020 and again between May and June 2020 (at the height of restrictions). PA, sedentary screen time (SST) and sleep were assessed via parent questionnaire. At Time 2, COVID-19 factors including level of restriction, environmental conditions, and parental stress were measured. Results: 948 parents completed the survey at both time points. Children from LMICs were more likely to meet the PA (AdjOR=2.0, 95%CI 1.0 to 3.8) and SST (2.2, CI 1.2 to 3.9) guidelines than their high-income country (HIC) counterparts. Children who could go outside during COVID-19 were more likely to meet all WHO recommendations (AdjOR 3.3, CI 1.1 to 9.8) than those who were not. Children of caregivers with higher compared to lower stress were less likely to meet all three guidelines (0.5, CI 0.3 to 0.9). Conclusion: PA and SST levels of children from LMICs have been less impacted by COVID-19 than in HICs. Ensuring children can access an outdoor space, and supporting caregivers’ mental health are important prevention strategies.

Literature has established that migration processes have significant effects on the mental and psychological health of migrant children and adolescents. Yet, little is known of the effects of family dynamics and individual characteristics on rural-to-urban migrant adolescents’ psychological adjustment in the context of China. Using a cross-sectional questionnaire-based research design, this article examines the relationship between perceived parental emotional warmth, identity integration and hope among a group of Chinese migrant adolescents. Of a sample of 1,345 Chinese migrant adolescents, between 11 and 19 years old, we found that perceived parental emotional warmth was significantly associated with identity integration, and that hope partially mediated the relationship between parental emotional warmth and identity integration. The implications of the findings for migrant adolescents’ psychological adjustment in receiving communities are discussed.

The present study investigates the acquisition of the [±realis] features encoded in Chinese negation by L1-English and L1-Korean learners through the framework of the Feature Reassembly Hypothesis. Two modes of grammaticality judgment tests (written and aural) were administered to 90 L1-English and 92 L1-Korean learners ranging from elementary to advanced Chinese proficiency levels, along with 15 native controls. Our study's findings in general support the proposals of the Feature Reassembly Hypothesis. The results indicate that L2 learners with lower Chinese proficiency tend to correspond their L1 features encoded in negation with similar L2 items, leading to target-deviant performances at the early stages of learning. L1-English and L1-Korean learners with increased Chinese proficiency assemble the [+realis] and [−realis] features with mei and bu, respectively. However, they face difficulties in identifying the [±realis] features represented in certain licensing contexts. Based on the results, we argue that the Feature Reassembly Hypothesis is strengthened when variables that constrain feature detectability and reassembly, such as L1 influence, L2 proficiency, input frequency and consistency, and task modality, are considered.

Background Assessment for learning has been identified as an effective strategy to help children learn more effectively. Developing children to master basic movement skills in primary school requires formative assessments to inform instruction and learning. This study reports the rationale and methods for an assessment-based intervention that emphasizes fun, mastery and support (A + FMS) designed to improve fundamental movement skill (FMS) proficiency of primary schoolchildren. Methods/design Utilizing a cluster randomized controlled trial, the A + FMS intervention was designed to improve FMS proficiency of Hong Kong Chinese schoolchildren. A target sample of 282 students or more from 10 Grade 3 classes (from five schools) will be recruited and randomly assigned into an experimental group or a wait-list control group. Competence motivation theory provided a framework for the intervention that emphasizes fun activities to develop basic fundamentals, improving mastery of movement, and providing support for teaching and learning skills. Primary outcome measures are the raw scores of six objectively measured FMS (i.e., jump, hop, skip, dribble, catch, and overhand throw). Secondary outcomes include self-reported measures: enjoyment in physical education, perceived physical competence, perceived skill competence, and perceived social support. Teachers in the experimental group are required to attend a six-h training workshop and integrate 550 min of assessment for learning strategies into their physical education lessons. Resources such as videos, skills checklists, and equipment will also be provided to support children to accumulate extra learning and practice time after school. The rate of changes in primary and secondary outcomes across the experimental and control groups will be compared to determine the effectiveness of the program. Discussion The A + FMS is an innovative school-based intervention targeting improvements in movement mastery by supporting physical education teachers in FMS instruction and assessment practices. The findings from the study may be used to guide pre-service teacher education and continuous professional development in FMS teaching and assessment. Trial registration CUHK_CCRB00479

This paper presents the findings of an outdoor thermal comfort study conducted in Hong Kong using longitudinal experiments--an alternative approach to conventional transverse surveys. In a longitudinal experiment, the thermal sensations of a relatively small number of subjects over different environmental conditions are followed and evaluated. This allows an exploration of the effects of changing climatic conditions on thermal sensation, and thus can provide information that is not possible to acquire through the conventional transverse survey. The paper addresses the effects of changing wind and solar radiation conditions on thermal sensation. It examines the use of predicted mean vote (PMV) in the outdoor context and illustrates the use of an alternative thermal index--physiological equivalent temperature (PET). The paper supports the conventional assumption that thermal neutrality corresponds to thermal comfort. Finally, predictive formulas for estimating outdoor thermal sensation are presented as functions of air temperature, wind speed, solar radiation intensity and absolute humidity. According to the formulas, for a person in light clothing sitting under shade on a typical summer day in Hong Kong where the air temperature is about 28°C and relative humidity about 80%, a wind speed of about 1.6 m/s is needed to achieve neutral thermal sensation.

Fulminant viral hepatitis (FH) remains an important clinical problem in which the underlying pathogenesis is not well understood. Here, we present insight into the immunological mechanisms involved in FH caused by murine hepatitis virus strain 3 (MHV-3), indicating a critical role for CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) and production of the novel Treg effector molecule FGL2. Before infection with MHV-3, susceptible BALB/cJ mice had increased numbers of Tregs and expression of fgl2 messenger RNA (mRNA) and FGL2 protein compared with resistant A/J mice. After MHV-3 infection, plasma levels of FGL2 in BALB/cJ mice were significantly increased, correlating with increased percentage of Tregs. Treatment with anti-FGL2 antibody completely inhibited Treg activity and protected susceptible BALB/cJ mice against MHV-3-liver injury and mortality. Adoptive transfer of wild-type Tregs into resistant fgl2−/− mice increased their mortality caused by MHV-3 infection, whereas transfer of peritoneal exudate macrophages had no adverse effect. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that FGL2 is an important effector cytokine of Tregs that contributes to susceptibility to MHV-3–induced FH. The results further suggest that targeting FGL2 may lead to the development of novel treatment approaches for acute viral hepatitis infection. (HEPATOLOGY 2009.)

Background Obesity is now an epidemic in most parts of the world.In this cross sectional study,we report the most recent data on obesity in Hong Kong Chinese working population and compare the changes over 10 years. Methods Between July 2000 and March 2002,5882 adult subjects from the working class in Hong Kong were recruited (2716 men (46.2%) and 3166 women (53.8%)).They were randomly selected using computer generated codes according to the distribution of occupational groups.Results of this study were compared with the data collected from a prevalence survey for cardiovascular risk factors in a Hong Kong Chinese working population conducted in 1990 (1513 subjects,910 men (60.1%) and 603 women (39.9%)). Results Standardized percentages of overweight,obesity,and central obesity,in Hong Kong Chinese working population were 59.7%,35.0%,26.7% in men and 32.0%,21.7%,26.7% in women.Compared to the data collected in 1990,the percentage of obesity increased by 5% in men and reduced by 6% in women.The percentage of central obesity doubled in men (from 12.2% to 26.7%) but remained stable in women. Conclusions There is a doubling of the percentage of central obesity in Hong Kong Chinese working men over previous decade.Education and proper lifestyle modification program to tackle this social health issue are urgently indicated. A 4-amido-pyrrolidone library that was intentionally synthesized as pairs of diastereomers was produced by solution-phase parallel syntheses and purified by an automated high-throughput purification system. A total of 2592 4-amido-pyrrolidinones were ultimately isolated as single diastereomers from a matrix of 1920 syntheses. After the four-step synthesis and HPLC purification, the average yield of a single diastereomer was 36.6%. The average chemical purity was >90%, and the average diastereomeric purity was >87%. The choice of chiral amines used to make amides with heterocyclic acid chlorides had a dramatic effect on success. Analysis of the relationship between amines used for synthesis and the diastereomeric separation showed that amides made from chiral 1,2-amino alcohols gave superior separation to amides from chiral morpholines. The presence of a hydrogen bond donor on the amide side chain seems to be required for a better diastereomeric separation.

Under the division of labor of Western medicine, the medical physician treats the body of patients, the social worker attends to their emotions and social relations, while the pastoral counselor provides spiritual guidance. Body, mind, cognition, emotion and spirituality are seen as discrete entities. In striking contrast, Eastern philosophies of Buddhism, Taoism and traditional Chinese medicine adopt a holistic conceptualization of an individual and his or her environment. In this view, health is perceived as a harmonious equilibrium that exists between the interplay of 'yin' and 'yang': the five internal elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth), the six environmental conditions (dry, wet, hot, cold, wind and flame), other external sources of harm (physical injury, insect bites, poison, overeat and overwork), and the seven emotions (joy, sorrow, anger, worry, panic, anxiety and fear). The authors have adopted a body-mind-spirit integrated model of intervention to promote the health of their Chinese clients. Indeed, research results on these body-mind-spirit groups for cancer patients, bereaved wives and divorced women have shown very positive intervention outcomes. There are significant improvements in their physical health, mental health, sense of control and social support.

This paper addresses cultural sensitivity in applying the Satir model in the Hong Kong Chinese cultural setting, focusing on congruent communication. The authors contend that Satir was sensitive to the demands of culture. Her focus on individuality, equality, and freedom responds aptly to the egalitarian individualist ethos of the United States. In Hong Kong the family is generally dominated by hierarchical collectivist values. Applying the Satir model as it is being practiced in the United States totally ignores prevailing cultural conditions. Following the spirit of Satir, the authors propose the adoption of an emic approach, drawing inspiration and resource from traditional Chinese culture and maintaining continuity with hierarchical collectivism while protecting individual quests for equality, freedom, and independence.

The morphological quantification of filamentous microbes represents an important analytical technique in the optimization of bioprocesses involving such organisms, given the demonstrated links between morphology and metabolite yield. However, in many studies, much of this quantification has required some degree of manual intervention, if it has been conducted at all, burdening biotechnologists with a time-consuming process and potentially introducing bias into analyses. Here, software for the automated quantification of filamentous microbes is presented, implemented as a plug-in for the widely used, freely available image analysis package, ImageJ. The software, together with all related source code, documentation and test data, is freely available to the community via an online repository.

We examine the concentrations and food web biomagnification of three cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMS) octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) using aquatic biota collected from Lake Erie. Concentrations of cVMS in biota were within the range reported for other studies of cVMS in aquatic biota. Trophic magnification factors (TMF) were assessed in various food web configurations to investigate the effects of food web structure. This paper presents and evaluates an approach to teaching practicing social workers in Hong Kong qualitative research from a feminist perspective. Using a problem-based format, graduate social workers in Hong Kong were taught critical appraisal skills while learning to do qualitative interview research in their practices. While the problem-based design supports models of adult learning and is a successful method for teaching new research skills to a diverse student body, linking epistemology with methodology and practice was a challenge in the cross-cultural context for both students and instructor.

Divorce has been used by battered women as a way to end their abusive experiences in many countries. However, in China, divorce has been controlled strictly by the government and social norms. It is not common for battered women in China to use divorce as a way out of an abusive relationship. This article explores how and why “enduring violence” has become a main coping strategy for battered women in rural China. The findings indicate that social, cultural, familial, and personal factors interact with each other to constitute the specific coping process for battered women. Qualitative methods are applied in data collection and analyses.

Many Chinese cancer patients encounter a high degree of anxiety, but lack the vocabulary to express themselves emotionally. This is an attempt to develop a culturally sensitive psycho-social intervention for Chinese cancer patients in Hong Kong. A seven-phase model of emotional responses to cancer was developed from interviews with patients and focus group discussions with professionals. Based on an understanding of the local culture and what works best for the patients, the intervention focus was on empowering cancer patients to take charge of their health, their mood and their own lives. The framework of intervention with detailed intervention theories and skills are proposed.

Signal transduction modulates expression and activity of cholesterol transporters. We recently demonstrated that the Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascade regulates protein stability of Scavenger Receptor BI (SR-BI) through Proliferator Activator Receptor (PPARα) -dependent degradation pathways. In addition, MAPK (Mek/Erk 1/2) inhibition has been shown to influence liver X receptor (LXR) -inducible ATP Binding Cassette (ABC) transporter ABCA1 expression in macrophages. Here we investigated if Ras/MAPK signaling could alter expression and activity of ABCA1 and ABCG1 in steroidogenic and hepatic cell lines. We demonstrate that in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells and human hepatic HuH7 cells, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (Erk1/2) inhibition reduces PPARα-inducible ABCA1 protein levels, while ectopic expression of constitutively active H-Ras, K-Ras and MAPK/Erk kinase 1 (Mek1) increases ABCA1 protein expression, respectively. Furthermore, Mek1/2 inhibitors reduce ABCG1 protein levels in ABCG1 overexpressing CHO cells (CHO-ABCG1) and human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells treated with LXR agonist. This correlates with Mek1/2 inhibition reducing ABCG1 cell surface expression and decreasing cholesterol efflux onto High Density Lipoproteins (HDL). Real Time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and protein turnover studies reveal that Mek1/2 inhibitors do not target transcriptional regulation of ABCA1 and ABCG1, but promote ABCA1 and ABCG1 protein degradation in HuH7 and CHO cells, respectively. In line with published data from mouse macrophages, blocking Mek1/2 activity upregulates ABCA1 and ABCG1 protein levels in human THP1 macrophages, indicating opposite roles for the Ras/MAPK pathway in the regulation of ABC transporter activity in macrophages compared to steroidogenic and hepatic cell types. In summary, this study suggests that Ras/MAPK signaling modulates PPARα- and LXR-dependent protein degradation pathways in a cell-specific manner to regulate the expression levels of ABCA1 and ABCG1 transporters.

Summary While in Western countries, the development of the self‐help movement is flourishing in the social service and healthcare scene, there is a lack of such parallel development in Hong Kong. This may be due to the different cultural orientations as well as the lack of deliberate effort on the part of the government and related professionals. The present establishment and service delivery system of the healthcare institutions in Hong Kong has few provisions to cater to the social adjustment and quality of life for chronic patients. Although Chinese families and kinship networks are invaluable assets in providing support to patients and caregivers, the cultural stigmatization against illness and the strong sense of paternalistic professional domination in the present medical system are obstacles to the development of self‐help among patients in Hong Kong. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) Erk1/2 has been implicated to modulate the activity of nuclear receptors, including peroxisome proliferator activator receptors (PPARs) and liver X receptor, to alter the ability of cells to export cholesterol. Here, we investigated if the Ras-Raf-Mek-Erk1/2 signaling cascade could affect reverse cholesterol transport via modulation of scavenger receptor class BI (SR-BI) levels. We demonstrate that in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) and human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells, Mek1/2 inhibition reduces PPARα-inducible SR-BI protein expression and activity, as judged by reduced efflux onto high density lipoprotein (HDL). Ectopic expression of constitutively active H-Ras and Mek1 increases SR-BI protein levels, which correlates with elevated PPARα Ser-21 phosphorylation and increased cholesterol efflux. In contrast, SR-BI levels are insensitive to Mek1/2 inhibitors in PPARα-depleted cells. Most strikingly, Mek1/2 inhibition promotes SR-BI degradation in SR-BI-overexpressing CHO cells and human HuH7 hepatocytes, which is associated with reduced uptake of radiolabeled and 1,1′-dioctadecyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethylindocarbocyane-labeled HDL. Loss of Mek1/2 kinase activity reduces SR-BI expression in the presence of bafilomycin, an inhibitor of lysosomal degradation, indicating down-regulation of SR-BI via proteasomal pathways. In conclusion, Mek1/2 inhibition enhances the PPARα-dependent degradation of SR-BI in hepatocytes.

This paper discusses the involvement of elderly persons as providers and consumers of neighborhood community care services in the city of Guangzhou. Elderly persons are actively involved as volunteers providing neighborhood services, mutual help and public educational activities. The Street Office and Residents' Committee structures serve as a platform, especially for the less educated elderly persons, for participating in community affairs. Elderly women are particularly active in the Residents' Committee. They can assert their influence on issues relating to neighborhood management. However, the actual number of elderly persons in the neighborhood being served is relatively small. The family is still the dominant form of protection for the elderly in China.

Mycelial morphology is a critically important process property in industrial fermentations of filamentous micro-organisms, as particular phenotypes are associated with maximum productivity. However, the accurate quantification of complex morphologies still represents a significant challenge in elucidating this relationship. A system has been developed for high-resolution characterisation of filamentous fungal growth on a solid substrate, using membrane immobilization and fully-automatic plug-ins developed for the public domain, Java-based, image-processing software, ImageJ. The system has been used to quantify the microscopic development of Aspergillus oryzae on malt agar, by measuring spore projected area and circularity, the total length of a hyphal element, the number of tips per element, and the hyphal growth unit. Two different stages of growth are described, from the swelling of a population of conidiospores up to fully developed, branched hyphae 24 h after inoculation. Spore swelling expressed as an increase in mean equivalent spore diameter was found to be approximately linear with time. Widespread germination of spores was observed by 8 h after inoculation. From approximately 12 h, the number of tips was found to increase exponentially. The specific growth rate of a population of hyphae was calculated as approximately 0.24-0.27 h(-1). A wide variation in growth kinetics was found within the population. The robustness of the image-analysis system was verified by testing the effect of small variations in the input data.

“Research cannot reach its full potential when half the population is excluded from its activities”1. Women researchers in engineering remain a minority in both Higher Education and industry in Ireland. Recent statistics of women graduating in science and engineering indicated an increase (a slow increase) but the numbers moving through to completion of PhD and careers in academia or industry remain quite low. Statistics on women in professorial and senior positions within the engineering sector also remains low. The educated workforce produced in Ireland by its education system is acknowledged as a key factor in attracting international investment to the country and in the growth of the modern technological industries which has helped make Ireland one of the fastest growing economies globally. However, as a country Ireland would put this success at risk if it does not continue to develop its research and development capabilities. There has been much debate at national and European level ‘to boost gender equality in research through stimulating the participation of women in science and technological development; and fostering the integration of the gender dimension throughout European research.’ As a result, national and European research funding has been directed at this area. Two such project proposals have been submitted by the Technological University Dublin, one through Science Foundation Ireland and the other at European level, through the Sixth European Framework, this was submitted in conjunction with other European Partners. In this paper, we will discuss a number of primary obstacles that our research has found most of our female encountered in our survey and interviews – how to balance the choice you choose. Some initiatives on the proposal based on the statistics survey to support women in engineering will also present and share among the academic community; it is hoped that the measures proposed will be of practical use for other academic communities who are affected by the under-representation of women. The overarching aim is that potential research insights from women will be encouraged and not neglected so “no great research” is overlooked. This paper may be of value to an American audience by (i) informing them of the situation regarding representation of women in engineering and science roles in Ireland; (ii) outlining a self-assessment exercise conducted at Technological University Dublin into research participation by women in science and engineering and (iii) highlighting a comprehensive range of proposed measures to redress gender imbalance in science, engineering and technologically related disciplines in DIT.

We have developed a high-throughput purification system to purify combinatorial libraries at a 50-100-mg scale with a throughput of 250 samples/instrument/day. We applied an accelerated retention window method to shorten the purification time and targeted one fraction per injection to simplify data tracking, lower QC workload, and simplify the postpurification processing. First, we determined the accurate retention time and peak height for all compounds using an eight-channel parallel LC/UV/MS system, and calculated the specific preparative HPLC conditions for individual compounds. The preparative HPLC conditions include the compound-specific gradient segment for individual compounds with a fixed gradient slope and the compound-specific UV or ELSD threshold for triggering a fraction collection device. A unique solvent composition or solvent strength was programmed for each compound in the preparative HPLC in order to elute all compounds at the same target time. Considering the possible deviation of the predicted retention time, a 1-min window around the target time was set to collect peaks above a threshold based on UV or ELSD detection. Dual column preparative instruments were used to maximize throughput. We have purified more than 500 000 druglike compounds using this system in the past 3 years. We report various components of this high-throughput purification system and some of our purification results.
