Hybrid 3D scaffolds composed of different biomaterials with fibrous structure or enriched with different inclusions (i.e., nano- and microparticles) have already demonstrated their positive effect on cell integration and regeneration. The analysis of fibers in hybrid biomaterials, especially in a 3D space is often difficult due to their various diameters (from micro to nanoscale) and compositions. Though biomaterials processing workflows are implemented, there are no software tools for fiber analysis that can be easily integrated into such workflows. Due to the demand for reproducible science with Jupyter notebooks and the broad use of the Python programming language, we have developed the new Python package quanfima offering a complete analysis of hybrid biomaterials, that include the determination of fiber orientation, fiber and/or particle diameter and porosity. Here, we evaluate the provided tensor-based approach on a range of generated datasets under various noise conditions. Also, we show its application to the X-ray tomography datasets of polycaprolactone fibrous scaffolds pure and containing silicate-substituted hydroxyapatite microparticles, hydrogels enriched with bioglass contained strontium and alpha-tricalcium phosphate microparticles for bone tissue engineering and porous cryogel 3D scaffold for pancreatic cell culturing. The results obtained with the help of the developed package demonstrated high accuracy and performance of orientation, fibers and microparticles diameter and porosity analysis.

Crystal research and technology 51(4), 290 - 298(2016). doi:10.1002/crat.201500343, We report on the growth and characterization of sapphire single crystals for X-ray optics applications. Structural defects were studied by means of laboratory double-crystal X-ray diffractometry and white-beam synchrotron-radiation topography. The investigations confirmed that the main defect types are dislocations. The best quality crystal was grown using the Kyropoulos technique. Therein the dislocation density was 10$^2$–10$^3$ cm$^{-2}$ and a small area with approximately 2*2 mm$^2$ did not show dislocation contrast in many reflections. This crystal has suitable quality for application as a backscattering monochromator. At the synchrotron ANKA (ANgstrom source KArlsruhe) we pursue a research and development program on superconducting undulators (SCUs). This technology is of interest to improve the spectral characteristics of the emitted photons in third and fourth generation light sources. We present here the results obtained within the ongoing collaboration with the industrial partner Babcock Noell GmbH (BNG) on NbTi conduction cooled planar devices. Investigations on the application of alternative superconductors as well as a summary of the achievements reached to precisely characterize the magnetic field properties of SCUs and to measure the beam heat load to a cold bore are also described., Proceedings of the 6th Int. Sanyrevilleus Legalov, 2003 [Incorrect subsequent spelling.] Comment: Legalov's (2003) original spelling of the family-group name, Sanyrevilleina, was based on the incorrect subsequent spelling Sanyrevilleus of the type species cited, Sayrevilleus Gratshev & Zherikhin, 2000. The error was perpetuated in his later works as well as in the recent catalogue of beetle family-group names (Bouchard et al., 2011). According to Article 35.4.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999), family-group names based on incorrect spelling of the type genus must be corrected, hence the correct name of the subtribe is Sayrevilleina and of the subfamily Sayrevilleinae. Redescription: Eyes large, convex, dorsolateral, protruding, medially separated by less than width of rostrum. Head in lateral aspect subconical (Figs 8, 25–26, 34, 65), continuing into long, curved rostrum. Antennae inserted basally, nongeniculate. In apical 1/4 of rostrum ventrally with one or two pairs of erect, stout setae. Mandibles (Figs 9–10, 17–18, 46–48, 59–60, 63–64) long, lodged in deep sockets, externally dentate; either with three teeth (in Baltocar), or with two blunt teeth (in Sayrevilleus); inner edge evenly convex. Labial palps with three articles. Epistome extended forward at middle (Figs 44, 48), usually with stiff, erect setae. The aim of LUMEN collaboration was the investigation on single crystals of PbWO4 ( PWO): the results performed up to now provide the evidence of the possibility to optimise the optical properties of an intrinsic scintillator such as PWO. The control of essential requirements in the crystal preparation ( raw material purity, growing methods and post-growth annealing) as well as the introduction of selected dopants at suitable concentrations ( particularly trivalent and pentavalent ions) were found to be very successful in lowering the concentration of point defects in the lattice which strongly affect scintillation properties and radiation hardness. The systematic investigation effort to better understand the scintillation characteristics and to improve the quality of PWO crystals is due to their use for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter.

The optical damage induced by UV light in PbWO4 crystals is found to be similar to that induced by g radiation. Due to the peculiarities of optical absorption in PbWO4, the damage induced by UV light is a bulk process. This fact has important consequences for the approach to be adopted both for the use of the crystal as scintillator and for the qualification methods foreseen in the Regional Centres of the ECAL CMS Collaboration.
