Abstract

Geodetic altimeters provide unique observations of the river surface longitudinal profile due to their long repeat periods and densely spaced ground tracks. This information is valuable for calibrating hydraulic model parameters, and thus, for producing reliable simulations of water level for flood forecasting and river management, particularly in poorly instrumented catchments. In this study, we present an efficient calibration approach for hydraulic models based on a steady-state hydraulic solver and CryoSat-2 observations. In order to ensure that only coherent forcing/observation pairs are considered in the calibration, we first propose an outlier filtering approach for CryoSat-2 observations in data-scarce regions using a simulated runoff produced by a hydrologic model. In the hydraulic calibration, a steady-state solver computes the water surface elevation (WSE) profile along the river for selected discharges corresponding to the days of CryoSat-2 overpass. In synthetic calibration experiments, the global search algorithm generally recovers the true parameter values in portions of the river where observations are available, illustrating the benefit of dense spatial sampling from geodetic altimetry. The most sensitive parameters are the bed elevations. In calibration experiments with real CryoSat-2 data, validation performance against both Sentinel-3 WSE and in situ records is similar to previous studies, with Root Mean Square Deviation ranging from 0.43 to 1.14 m against Sentinel-3 and from 0.60 to 0.73 against in situ WSE observations. Performance remains similar when transferring parameters to a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model. Because the approach is computationally efficient, model parameters can be inverted at high spatial resolution to fully exploit the information contained in geodetic CryoSat-2 altimetry.

Abstract

Satellite remote sensing observations offer unique possibilities to monitor, understand and predict hydrological hazards, particularly in ungauged catchments. In this study, we use state-of-the-art multi-mission remote sensing observations to update a hydrological model of the poorly instrumented Ogooue river in Gabon. We use a conceptual rainfall-runoff model forced with satellite-based climate observations; and calibrate the model parameters using an aggregated objective function including Sentinel-3 satellite altimetry and GRACE/GRACE-FO total water storage. The model is used to evaluate flood risk in combination with Sentinel-1 water surface extent and flood occurrence maps and to simulate the potential impact of climate change on the rainfall-runoff processes in the catchment.

Abstract

Earth Observation (EO) data is a critical information source for mapping and monitoring water resources over large inaccessible regions where hydrological in-situ networks are sparse. In this paper, we present a simple yet robust method for fusing optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for mapping surface water dynamics over mainland China. This method uses a multivariate logistic regression model to estimate monthly surface water extent over a four-year period (2017 to 2020) from the combined usages of Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 imagery. Multi-seasonal high-resolution images from the Chinese Gaofen satellites are used as a reference for an independent validation showing a high degree of agreement (overall accuracy 94%) across a diversity of climatic and physiographic regions demonstrating potential scalability beyond China. Through inter-comparison with similar global scale products, this paper further shows how this new mapping technique provides improved spatio-temporal characterization of inland water bodies, and for better capturing smaller water bodies (< 0.81 ha in size). The relevance of the results is discussed, and we find this new enhanced monitoring approach has the potential to advance the use of Earth observation for water resource management, planning and reporting.

Abstract

Sentinel-3 is the first satellite altimeter to operate in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mode and in open-loop tracking mode nearly globally. Both features are expected to improve the ability of the altimeters to observe inland water bodies. In this study we evaluate the possibility to extract river water surface elevation (WSE) at catchment level from Sentinel-3A and Sentinel-3B radar altimetry, using Level-1b and Level-2 data from two public platforms. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the density of valuable observations and establish a WSE monitoring network. Additionally, we demonstrate the potential application of Sentinel-3 for monitoring river interactions with wetlands and floodplains. In the Zambezi basin, 175 virtual stations (VS) contain useful WSE information in both datasets, far exceeding the number of VS available in standard databases. The RMSD is between 2.7 cm and 31.2 cm at six in-situ stations and the VS reflect the observed WSE climatology throughout the basin. Additional VS are available in both the Copernicus Open Access Hub and GPOD (Grid Processing on Demand), highlighting the value of considering multiple processing options. In particular, we show that the processing options available on GPOD strongly affect the number of useful VS; in particular, extending the size of the receiving window, considerably improved data at 13 Sentinel-3 VS. The number of VS delivering usable data increased after the Open-Loop Tracking Command (OLTC) on-board Sentinel-3A was updated. However, the open-loop tracking mode poses two new challenges: correct on-board elevation information is crucial, and steep changes in the receiving window position can have detrimental effects on the WSE observations. Finally, we extract Sentinel-3 observations over key wetlands in the Zambezi basin. We show that clear seasonal patterns are captured in the Sentinel-3 WSE, reflecting flooding events in the floodplains. These results highlight the potential of using Sentinel-3 as a SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) surrogate while awaiting the mission launch. The results show the benefit of the high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) altimeter, as well as the benefits and disadvantages of the open-loop tracking mode.

5. Impacts of water resources management on land water storage in the North China Plain:Insights from multi-mission earth observations

Abstract

Natural conditions of surface water bodies and groundwater aquifers in the North China Plain (NCP) have been altered to meet the ever-growing human water demands. Several water resources management measures have been implemented in recent decades to alleviate groundwater depletion, maintain ecological resilience, and sustain agricultural production. This study aims to investigate their impacts on land water storage, and thus obtain a picture of the spatio-temporal variation of water resources over the NCP. Based on multi-mission earth observation datasets, i.e., altimetry (Sentinel-3), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and spectral imagery (Sentinel-1/2), gravimetry (GRACE/-FO), and microwave sensors (IMERG), as well as reanalysis datasets, we investigate surface water storage (SWS), soil moisture water storage (SMS), and total water storage (TWS) changes. Groundwater storage (GWS) change is subsequently estimated as the residual of the total storage equation.Results show that TWS declined significantly over the past decades (−1.04 ± 0.05 cm/yr in 2004 to 2020), while SMS rebounded after a decreasing trend from 2004 to 2014. The spatial pattern of TWS variations depicts a particularly severe depletion along provincial boundaries. The SWS dynamics reveal that the volumes of three major NCP reservoirs (Guanting, Miyun, and Danjiangkou) increased significantly since around 2014 when the operation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route project (SNWDP-MR) started. Moreover, GWS maintained a depletion rate of −1.05 ± 0.08 cm/yr during 2004–2014 over the whole NCP, while the depletion rate accelerated during 2015–2020 (−1.88 ± 0.38 cm/yr). We also found that the GWS depletion in Beijing (−1.20 ± 0.10 cm/yr during 2004–2014 and −0.79 ± 0.44 cm/yr during 2015–2020) and its surrounding areas has been lowered possibly because of the SNWDP-MR. This study shows how multi-mission satellite earth observation products can be combined to monitor water resources at a regional scale and provide spatio-temporally resolved estimates of the impacts of human-induced changes in the inland water cycle.

Abstract

Satellite radar altimetry has become an important data source supplementing in situ water level. For practical reasons, a radar altimeter can only record reflected echoes within its range window. Therefore, water surface elevation must fall within the range window. To this end, the Sentinel‐3 radar altimetry mission is configured with a new tracking function (i.e., open loop) to position its range window based on an onboard a priori elevation of ground targets. We found that Sentinel‐3 is unable to observe recently built reservoirs due to the incorrect onboard elevations. To overcome this issue, four approaches are proposed to improve the a priori elevation for inland water bodies, particularly reservoirs. These approaches can significantly increase data availability of Sentinel‐3 over reservoirs and can be used to prepare the onboard elevations of reservoirs and lakes for future missions such as Sentinel‐6, Sentinel‐3C/‐3D, and the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission.

Abstract

Development of robust hydrologic-hydrodynamic simulation models is challenging, especially in regions, where in-situ observation data are scarce. Parameter calibration is often a necessary and data-demanding step. Moreover, good calibration performance does not guarantee predictive skill in neighboring geographic regions or new time periods and scenarios. A robust calibration strategy is necessary and must apply an informed parameter regionalization approach, which can transfer parameter values from gauged to ungauged subcatchments, whilst accounting for data availability and quality. In this study, a calibration strategy combining a parameter transfer framework based on catchment similarities with a holistic calibration against hydrological signatures is presented to obtain reliable simulations at all relevant locations within a catchment. The approach is demonstrated for three African river catchments: the Tana, the Upper Niger and the Semliki catchments.A rainfall-runoff model based on Budyko’s concept of limits with up to 11 calibration parameters and a daily simulation time step is used, coupled with a Muskingum routing scheme. Each river catchment is subdivided into so-called hydrological response units (HRU) based on climatic and physiographic characteristics. Multi-mission satellite remote sensing observations are used for the HRU classification: terrain slope derived from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and the publicly available European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) land cover map. Subcatchments within each HRU share the same parameters. The number of units is constrained by the number of in-situ stations available. The calibration strategy is a catchment-scale, multi-objective approach.The method improved the overall model performance compared to a simpler, nearest-neighbor regionalization method. In particular, spatial patterns of the hydrological response are more reasonable and performance is improved at validation stations, highlighting the importance of appropriate parameter regionalization within nested catchments. With this method, a wider range of currently available remote sensing data (elevation, precipitation, land cover, etc.) can be exploited in hydrological model development and calibration.

High-quality bathymetric maps of inland water bodies are a common requirement for hydraulic engineering and hydrological science applications. Remote sensing methods, such as space-borne and airborne multispectral imaging or lidar, have been developed to estimate water depth, but are ineffective for most inland water bodies, because of the attenuation of electromagnetic radiation in water, especially under turbid conditions. Surveys conducted with boats equipped with sonars can retrieve accurate water depths, but are expensive, time-consuming, and unsuitable for unnavigable water bodies. We develop and assess a novel approach to retrieve accurate and high-resolution bathymetry maps. We measured accurate water depths using a tethered floating sonar controlled by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in a lake and in two different rivers located in Denmark. The developed technique combines the advantages of remote sensing with the potential of bathymetric sonars. UAV surveys can be conducted also in unnavigable, inaccessible, or remote water bodies. The tethered sonar can measure bathymetry with an accuracy of ∼2.1 % of the actual depth for observations up to 35 m, without being significantly affected by water turbidity, bed form, or bed material.

Abstract

Remote sensing provides a unique opportunity to inform and constrain a hydrological model and to increase its value as a decision-support tool. In this study, we applied a multi-mission approach to force, calibrate and validate a hydrological model of the ungauged Ogooué river basin in Africa with publicly available and free remote sensing observations. We used a rainfall–runoff model based on the Budyko framework coupled with a Muskingum routing approach. We parametrized the model using the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission digital elevation model (SRTM DEM) and forced it using precipitation from two satellite-based rainfall estimates, FEWS-RFE (Famine Early Warning System rainfall estimate) and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 v.7, and temperature from ECMWF ERA-Interim. We combined three different datasets to calibrate the model using an aggregated objective function with contributions from (1) historical in situ discharge observations from the period 1953–1984 at six locations in the basin, (2) radar altimetry measurements of river stages by Envisat and Jason-2 at 12 locations in the basin and (3) GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) total water storage change (TWSC). Additionally, we extracted CryoSat-2 observations throughout the basin using a Sentinel-1 SAR (synthetic aperture radar) imagery water mask and used the observations for validation of the model. The use of new satellite missions, including Sentinel-1 and CryoSat-2, increased the spatial characterization of river stage. Throughout the basin, we achieved good agreement between observed and simulated discharge and the river stage, with an RMSD between simulated and observed water amplitudes at virtual stations of 0.74 m for the TRMM-forced model and 0.87 m for the FEWS-RFE-forced model. The hydrological model also captures overall total water storage change patterns, although the amplitude of storage change is generally underestimated. By combining hydrological modeling with multi-mission remote sensing from 10 different satellite missions, we obtain new information on an otherwise unstudied basin. The proposed model is the best current baseline characterization of hydrological conditions in the Ogooué in light of the available observations.

Abstract

International Altimetry Team., In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and provides guidance for future mission design, research activities, and sustainable operational radar altimetry data exploitation. Recommendations provided are fundamental for optimizing further scientific and operational advances of oceanographic observations by altimetry, including requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of altimetric measurements, their accuracy and continuity. There are also new challenges and new openings mentioned in the paper that are particularly crucial for observations at higher latitudes, for coastal oceanography, for cryospheric studies and for hydrology. The paper starts with a general introduction followed by a section on Earth System Science including Ocean Dynamics, Sea Level, the Coastal Ocean, Hydrology, the Cryosphere and Polar Oceans and the “Green” Ocean, extending the frontier from biogeochemistry to marine ecology. Applications are described in a subsequent section, which covers Operational Oceanography, Weather, Hurricane Wave and Wind Forecasting, Climate projection. Instruments’ development and satellite missions’ evolutions are described in a fourth section. A fifth section covers the key observations that altimeters provide and their potential complements, from other Earth observation measurements to in situ data. Section 6 identifies the data and methods and provides some accuracy and resolution requirements for the wet tropospheric correction, the orbit and other geodetic requirements, the Mean Sea Surface, Geoid and Mean Dynamic Topography, Calibration and Validation, data accuracy, data access and handling (including the DUACS system). Section 7 brings a transversal view on scales, integration, artificial intelligence, and capacity building (education and training). Section 8 reviews the programmatic issues followed by a conclusion., At the forefront of this support, we must obviously mention the space agencies CNES, ESA and NASA which have played and still play a decisive role in the development and launch of several prominent altimetry missions from the outset. Other agencies such as DLR, EUMETSAT, ISRO, NOAA, NSOAS and organizations such as CMEMS, also contribute significantly to developments in all forms of altimetry.
