A monolithic silicon pixel ASIC prototype, produced in 2024 as part of the Horizon 2020 MONOLITH ERC Advanced project, was tested with a 120 GeV/c pion beam. The ASIC features a matrix of hexagonal pixels with a 100 \mu m pitch, read by low-noise, high-speed front-end electronics built using 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology. It includes the PicoAD sensor, which employs a continuous, deep PN junction to generate avalanche gain. Data were taken across power densities from 0.05 to 2.6 W/cm2 and sensor bias voltages from 90 to 180 V. At the highest bias voltage, corresponding to an electron gain of 50, and maximum power density, an efficiency of (99.99 \pm 0.01)% was achieved. The time resolution at this working point was (24.3 \pm 0.2) ps before time-walk correction, improving to (12.1 \pm 0.3) ps after correction.

Manipulating broadband fields in scattering media is a modern challenge across photonics and other wave domains. Recent studies have shown that complex propagation in scattering media can be harnessed to manipulate broadband light wave packets in space-time for focusing, imaging, and computing applications. Interestingly, while many proposed methodologies operate on intensity-based assessment of scattered fields, often in the spectral domain, from a pure transmission-function perspective, scattering operates as a linear field-level combinatory process, i.e., the superposition of transformation of unit excitations. As a result, we recently demonstrated that gaining experimental access to instantaneous scattered fields, as available through time-domain spectroscopy in the terahertz spectral range, in conjunction with sparse light excitation typical of ghost imaging, provides a key advantage in enabling the functionalisation of scattering, exposing a novel modelling paradigm. In this paper, we provide experimental proof of reconstructing 1-dimensional object features through a scattering medium using a fully broadband time-domain terahertz approach.

Current research in statistical mechanics mostly concerns the investigation of out-of-equilibrium, irreversible processes, which are ubiquitous in nature and still far from being theoretically understood. Even the precise characterization of irreversibility is the object of an open debate: while in the context of Hamiltonian systems the one-century-old proposal by M. Smoluchowski looks still valid (a process appears irreversible when the initial state has a recurrence time that is long compared to the time of observation [1]), in dissipative systems, particularly in the case of stochastic processes, the problem is more involved, and quantifying the "degree of irreversibility" is a pragmatic need. The most employed strategies rely on the estimation of entropy production: this quantity, although mathematically well-defined, is often difficult to compute, especially when analyzing experimental data. Moreover, being a global observable, entropy production fails to capture specific aspects of irreversibility in extended systems, such as the role of different currents and their spatial development. This review aims to address various conceptual and technical challenges encountered in the analysis of irreversibility, including the role of the coarse-graining procedure and the treatment of data in the absence of complete information. The discussion will be mostly based on simple models, analytically treatable, and supplemented by examples of complex, more realistic non-equilibrium systems., Comment: 79 pages, 19 figures

We present a simplified theory for semiflexible flagella under the action of a traveling-wave perturbation that emulates the organized active forces generated by molecular motors, capable of inducing beating patterns to the filament. By modeling the flagellum as a worm-like chain (WLC), we explore the interplay (competition) between the externally applied perturbation and the intrinsic bending rigidity of the filament. Our analysis aims to understand how this interplay can lead to a selection of conformations with the spatiotemporal behavior resembling the beating dynamics of axonemes such as those in sperm tails, in Chlamydomonas cilia, or eukaryotic flagella in general. Through a systematic analysis of the WLC's response to traveling-wave perturbations, we try to identify the key parameters that mostly influence the flagellar motion and shape its beating-like profiles., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We present a comprehensive study of the X-ray spectral properties of the accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J17498$-$2921 during its 2023 outburst. Similar to other accreting millisecond pulsars, the broad-band spectral emission observed quasi-simultaneously by NICER and NuSTAR is well described by an absorbed Comptonized emission with an electron temperature of $\sim$17 keV plus a disk reflection component. The broadening of the disk reflection spectral features, such as a prominent iron emission line at 6.4-6.7 keV, is consistent with the relativistic motion of matter in a disk truncated at $\sim$$21 \, \mathrm{R_g}$ from the source, near the Keplerian co-rotation radius. From the high-cadence monitoring data obtained with NICER, we observe that the evolution of the photon index and the temperature of seed photons tracks variations in the X-ray flux. This is particularly evident close to a sudden $\sim$-0.25 cycles jump in the pulse phase, which occurs immediately following an X-ray flux flare and a drop in the pulse amplitude below the $3\sigma$ detection threshold. DOREMUS works on a better description of music by building new tools to link and explore the data of three French institutions. This paper gives an overview of the data model based on FRBRoo, explains the conversion and linking processes using linked data technologies and presents the prototypes created to consume the data according to the web users' needs.

Samples of the monolithic silicon pixel ASIC prototype produced in 2022 within the framework of the Horizon 2020 MONOLITH ERC Advanced project were irradiated with 70 MeV protons up to a fluence of 1 x 1016 neq/cm2, and then tested using a beam of 120 GeV/c pions. The ASIC contains a matrix of 100 \mu m pitch hexagonal pixels, readout out by low noise and very fast frontend electronics produced in a 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology process. The dependence on the proton fluence of the efficiency and the time resolution of this prototype was measured with the frontend electronics operated at a power density between 0.13 and 0.9 W/cm2. The testbeam data show that the detection efficiency of 99.96% measured at sensor bias voltage of 200 V before irradiation becomes 96.2% after a fluence of 1 x 1016 neq/cm2. An increase of the sensor bias voltage to 300 V provides an efficiency to 99.7% at that proton fluence. The timing resolution of 20 ps measured before irradiation rises for a proton fluence of 1 x 1016 neq/cm2 to 53 and 45 ps at HV = 200 and 300 V, respectively.

Solar radio spikes are short lived, narrow bandwidth features in low frequency solar radio observations. The timing of their occurrence and the number of spikes in a given observation is often unpredictable. The high temporal and frequency of resolution of modern radio telescopes such as NenuFAR mean that manually identifying radio spikes is an arduous task. Machine learning approaches to data exploration in solar radio data is on the rise. Here we describe a convolutional neural network to identify the per pixel location of radio spikes as well as determine some simple characteristics of duration, spectral width and drift rate. The model, which we call SpikeNet, was trained using an Nvidia Tesla T4 16GB GPU with ~100000 sample spikes in a total time of 2.2 hours. The segmentation performs well with an intersection over union in the test set of ~0.85. The root mean squared error for predicted spike properties is of the order of 23%. Applying the algorithm to unlabelled data successfully generates segmentation masks although the accuracy of the predicted properties is less reliable, particularly when more than one spike is present in the same 64 X 64 pixel time-frequency range. We have successfully demonstrated that our convolutional neural network can locate and characterise solar radio spikes in a number of seconds compared to the weeks it would take for manual identification., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Atmospheric escape plays a fundamental role in shaping the properties of exoplanets. The metastable near-infrared helium triplet at 1083.3 nm (HeI) is a powerful proxy of extended and evaporating atmospheres. We used the GIARPS (GIANO-B+HARPS-N) observing mode of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo to search for HeI absorption in the upper atmosphere of five close-in giant planets hosted by the K and M dwarf stars of our sample, namely WASP-69b, WASP-107b, HAT-P-11b, GJ436b, and GJ3470b. We focused our analysis on the HeI triplet by performing high-resolution transmission spectroscopy. When nightly variability in the HeI absorption signal was identified, we investigated the potential influence of stellar magnetic activity by searching for variations in the H$\alpha$. We spectrally resolve the HeI triplet and confirm the published detections for WASP-69b (3.91$\pm$0.22%, 17.6$\sigma$), WASP-107b (8.17$^{+0.80}_{-0.76}$%, 10.5$\sigma$), HAT-P-11b (1.36$\pm$0.17%, 8.0$\sigma$), and GJ3470b (1.75$^{+0.39}_{-0.36}$%, 4.7$\sigma$). We do not find evidence of extra absorption for GJ436b. We observe night-to-night variations in the HeI absorption signal for WASP-69b, associated with variability in H$\alpha$, which likely indicates the influence of stellar activity. Additionally, we find that the HeI signal of GJ3470b originates from a single transit, thereby corroborating the discrepancies in the existing literature. An inspection of the H$\alpha$ reveals an absorption signal during the same transit. By combining our findings with previous analyses of GIANO-B HeI measurements of planets around K dwarfs, we explore potential trends with planetary/stellar parameters that are thought to affect the HeI absorption. Solar radio U-bursts are generated by electron beams traveling along closed magnetic loops in the solar corona. Low-frequency ($<$ 100 MHz) U-bursts serve as powerful diagnostic tools for studying large-sized coronal loops that extend into the middle corona. However, the positive frequency drift component (descending leg) of U-bursts has received less attention in previous studies, as the descending radio flux is weak. In this study, we utilized LOFAR interferometric solar imaging data from a U-burst that has a significant descending leg component, observed between 10 to 90 MHz on June 5th, 2020. By analyzing the radio source centroid positions, we determined the beam velocities and physical parameters of a large coronal magnetic loop that reached just about 1.3 $\rm{R_{\odot}}$ in altitude. At this altitude, we found the plasma temperature to be around 1.1 MK, the plasma pressure around 0.20 $\rm{mdyn,cm^{-2}}$, and the minimum magnetic field strength around 0.07 G. The similarity in physical properties determined from the image suggests a symmetric loop. The average electron beam velocity on the ascending leg was found to be 0.21 c, while it was 0.14 c on the descending leg. This apparent deceleration is attributed to a decrease in the range of electron energies that resonate with Langmuir waves, likely due to the positive background plasma density gradient along the downward loop leg.

Metasurfaces represent a new frontier in materials science paving for unprecedented methods of controlling electromagnetic waves, with a range of applications spanning from sensing to imaging and communications. For pulsed terahertz generation, metasurfaces offer a gateway to tuneable thin emitters that can be utilised for large-area imaging, microscopy and spectroscopy. In literature THz-emitting metasurfaces generally exhibit high absorption, being based either on metals or on semiconductors excited in highly resonant regimes. Here we propose the use of a fully dielectric semiconductor exploiting morphology-mediated resonances and inherent quadratic nonlinear response. Our system exhibits a remarkable 40-fold efficiency enhancement compared to the unpatterned at the peak of the optimised wavelength range, demonstrating its potential as scalable emitter design.

Solar radio bursts are some of the brightest emissions at radio frequencies in the solar system. The emission mechanisms that generate these bursts offer a remote insight into physical processes in solar coronal plasma, while fine spectral features hint at its underlying turbulent nature. During radio noise storms many hundreds of solar radio bursts can occur over the course of a few hours. Identifying and classifying solar radio bursts is often done manually although a number of automatic algorithms have been produced for this purpose. The use of machine learning algorithms for image segmentation and classification is well established and has shown promising results in the case of identifying Type II and Type III solar radio bursts. Here we present the results of a convolutional neural network applied to dynamic spectra of NenuFAR solar observations. The Open Science paradigm and the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) are aiming at fostering scientific return, and reinforcing the trust in science production. The MASER (Measuring, Analysing and Simulating Emissions in the Radio range) services implement Open Science through a series of existing solutions that have been put together, only adding new pieces where needed. It is a "science ready" toolbox dedicated to time-domain low frequency radioastronomy, which data products mostly covers solar and planetary observations. MASER solutions are based on IVOA protocols for data discovery, on IHDEA tools for data exploration, and on a dedicated format developed by MASER for the temporal-spectral annotations. The service also proposes a data repository for sharing data collections, catalogues and associated documentation, as well as supplementary materials associated to papers. Each collection is managed through a Data Management Plan, which purpose is two-fold: supporting the provider for managing the collection content; and supporting the data centre for resource management. The time resolution of the second monolithic silicon pixel prototype produced for the MONOLITH H2020 ERC Advanced project was studied using a femtosecond laser. The ASIC contains a matrix of hexagonal pixels with 100 {\mu}m pitch, readout by low-noise and very fast SiGe HBT frontend electronics. Silicon wafers with 50 {\mu}m thick epilayer with a resistivity of 350 {\Omega}cm were used to produce a fully depleted sensor. At the highest frontend power density tested of 2.7 W/cm2, the time resolution with the femtosecond laser pulses was found to be 45 ps for signals generated by 1200 electrons, and 3 ps in the case of 11k electrons, which corresponds approximately to 0.4 and 3.5 times the most probable value of the charge generated by a minimum-ionizing particle. The results were compared with testbeam data taken with the same prototype to evaluate the time jitter produced by the fluctuations of the charge collection., Comment: Submitted to JINST

The intrinsic variability due to the magnetic activity of young active stars is one of the main challenges in detecting and characterising exoplanets. We present a method able to model the stellar photosphere and its surface inhomogeneities (starspots) in young/active and fast-rotating stars, based on the cross-correlation function (CCF) technique, to extract information about the spot configuration of the star. Within the Global Architecture of Planetary Systems (GAPS) Project at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we analysed more than 300 spectra of the young planet-hosting star V1298 Tau provided by HARPS-N high-resolution spectrograph. By applying the SpotCCF model to the CCFs we extracted the spot configuration (latitude, longitude and projected filling factor) of this star, and also provided the new RVs time series of this target. We find that the features identified in the CCF profiles of V1298 Tau are modulated by the stellar rotation, supporting our assumption that they are caused by starspots. The analysis suggests a differential rotation velocity of the star with lower rotation at higher latitudes. Also, we find that SpotCCF provides an improvement in RVs extraction with a significantly lower dispersion with respect to the commonly used pipelines, with consequent mitigation of the stellar activity contribution modulated with stellar rotation. A detection sensitivity test, by the direct injection of a planetary signal into the data, confirmed that the SpotCCF model improves the sensitivity and ability to recover planetary signals. Our method enables the modelling of the stellar photosphere, extracting the spot configuration of young/active and rapidly rotating stars. Context. Different theories have been developed to explain the origins and properties of close-in giant planets, but none of them alone can explain all of the properties of the warm Jupiters (WJs, Porb = 10 - 200 days). One of the most intriguing characteristics of WJs is that they have a wide range of orbital eccentricities, challenging our understanding of their formation and evolution. Aims. The investigation of these systems is crucial in order to put constraints on formation and evolution theories. TESS is providing a significant sample of transiting WJs around stars bright enough to allow spectroscopic follow-up studies. Methods. We carried out a radial velocity (RV) follow-up study of the TESS candidate TOI-4515 b with the high-resolution spectrograph HARPS-N in the context of the GAPS project, the aim of which is to characterize young giant planets, and the TRES and FEROS spectrographs. We then performed a joint analysis of the HARPS-N, TRES, FEROS, and TESS data in order to fully characterize this planetary system. Results. We find that TOI-4515 b orbits a 1.2 Gyr-old G-star, has an orbital period of Pb = 15.266446 +- 0.000013 days, a mass of Mb = 2.01 +- 0.05 MJ, and a radius of Rb = 1.09 +- 0.04 RJ. We also find an eccentricity of e = 0.46 +- 0.01, placing this planet among the WJs with highly eccentric orbits. As no additional companion has been detected, this high eccentricity might be the consequence of past violent scattering events., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

The redshifted 21 cm signal from neutral hydrogen is a direct probe of the physics of the early universe and has been an important science driver of many present and upcoming radio interferometers. In this study we use a single night of observations with the New Extension in Nan\c{c}ay Upgrading LOFAR (NenuFAR) to place upper limits on the 21 cm power spectrum from cosmic dawn at a redshift of $z$ = 20.3. NenuFAR is a new low-frequency radio interferometer, operating in the 10-85 MHz frequency range, currently under construction at the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Observatory in France. It is a phased array instrument with a very dense uv coverage at short baselines, making it one of the most sensitive instruments for 21 cm cosmology analyses at these frequencies. Our analysis adopts the foreground subtraction approach, in which sky sources are modeled and subtracted through calibration and residual foregrounds are subsequently removed using Gaussian process regression. The final power spectra are constructed from the gridded residual data cubes in the uv plane. Signal injection tests are performed at each step of the analysis pipeline, the relevant pipeline settings are optimized to ensure minimal signal loss, and any signal suppression is accounted for through a bias correction on our final upper limits. We obtain a best 2$\sigma$ upper limit of $2.4\times 10^7$ $\text{mK}^{2}$ at $z$ = 20.3 and $k$ = 0.041 $h\,\text{cMpc}^{-1}$. We see a strong excess power in the data, making our upper limits two orders of magnitude higher than the thermal noise limit. We investigate the origin and nature of this excess power and discuss further improvements to the analysis pipeline that can potentially mitigate it and consequently allow us to reach thermal noise sensitivity when multiple nights of observations are processed in the future., Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures, and 6 tables; accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A); language edits implemented; typos corrected

Is the population of close-in planets orbiting M dwarfs sculpted by thermally driven escape or is it a direct outcome of the planet formation process? A number of recent empirical results strongly suggest the latter. However, the unique architecture of the TOI-1266 system presents a challenge to models of planet formation and atmospheric escape given its seemingly "inverted" architecture of a large sub-Neptune ($P_b=10.9$ days, $R_{p,b}=2.62\pm 0.11\, \mathrm{R}_{\oplus}$) orbiting interior to that of the system's smaller planet ($P_c=18.8$ days, $R_{p,c}=2.13\pm 0.12\, \mathrm{R}_{\oplus}$). Here we present revised planetary radii based on new TESS and diffuser-assisted ground-based transit observations, and characterize both planetary masses using a set of 145 radial velocity measurements from HARPS-N ($M_{p,b}=4.23\pm 0.69\, \mathrm{M}_{\oplus}, M_{p,c}=2.88\pm 0.80\, \mathrm{M}_{\oplus}$). Our analysis also reveals a third planet candidate ($P_d=32.3$ days, $M_{p,d}\sin{i} = 4.59^{+0.96}_{-0.94}\, \mathrm{M}_{\oplus}$), which if real, would form a chain of near 5:3 period ratios, although the system is likely not in a mean motion resonance. Our results indicate that TOI-1266 b and c are among the lowest density sub-Neptunes around M dwarfs and likely exhibit distinct bulk compositions of a gas-enveloped terrestrial ($X_{\mathrm{env},b}=5.5\pm 0.7$%) and a water-rich world (WMF$_c=59\pm 14$%), which is supported by hydrodynamic escape models. If distinct bulk compositions are confirmed through atmospheric characterization, the system's unique architecture would represent an interesting test case of inside-out sub-Neptune formation at pebble traps., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 pages. Studying the magnetic fields of exoplanets will provide valuable information about their interior structures, atmospheric properties (escape and dynamics), and potential habitability. One of the most promising methods to detect exoplanetary magnetic fields is to study their auroral radio emission. However, there are no confirmed detections of an exoplanet in the radio despite decades of searching. Recently, Turner et al. 2021 reported a tentative detection of circularly polarized bursty emission from the $\tau$ Boo exoplanetary system using LOFAR low-frequency beamformed observations. The likely source of this emission was presumed to be from the $\tau$ Boo planetary system and a possible explanation is radio emission from the exoplanet $\tau$ Boo b, produced via the cyclotron maser mechanism. Assuming the emission is from the planet, Turner et al. 2021 found that the derived planetary magnetic field is compatible with theoretical predictions. The need to confirm this tentative detection is critical as a conclusive detection would have broad implications for exoplanetary science. In this study, we performed a follow-up campaign on the $\tau$ Boo system using the newly commissioned NenuFAR telescope in 2020. We do not detect any bursty emission in the NenuFAR observations. There are many different degenerate explanations for our non-detection. For example, the original bursty signal may have been caused by an unknown instrumental systematic. Alternatively, the planetary emission from $\tau$ Boo b is variable. As planetary radio emission is triggered by the interaction of the planetary magnetosphere with the magnetized stellar wind, the expected intensity of the planetary radio emission varies greatly with stellar rotation and along the stellar magnetic cycle. With the advent of multi-wavelength electromagnetic observations of neutron stars, spanning many decades in photon energies, from radio wavelengths up to X-rays and $\gamma$-rays, it becomes possible to significantly constrain the geometry and the location of the associated emission regions. In this work, we use results from the modelling of thermal X-ray observations of PSR~J0030+0451 from the NICER mission and phase-aligned radio and $\gamma$-ray pulse profiles to constrain the geometry of an off-centred dipole able to reproduce the light-curves in these respective bands simultaneously. To this aim, we deduce a configuration with a simple dipole off-centred from the location of the centre of the thermal X-ray hot spots and show that the geometry is compatible with independent constraints from radio and $\gamma$-ray pulsations only, leading to a fixed magnetic obliquity of $\alpha \approx 75\deg$ and a line of sight inclination angle of $\zeta \approx 54\deg$. We demonstrate that an off-centred dipole cannot be rejected by accounting for the thermal X-ray pulse profiles. Moreover, the crescent shape of one spot is interpreted as the consequence of a small scale surface dipole on top of the large scale off-centred dipole., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A
