The redshifted 21 cm signal from neutral hydrogen is a direct probe of the physics of the early universe and has been an important science driver of many present and upcoming radio interferometers. In this study we use a single night of observations with the New Extension in Nan\c{c}ay Upgrading LOFAR (NenuFAR) to place upper limits on the 21 cm power spectrum from cosmic dawn at a redshift of $z$ = 20.3. NenuFAR is a new low-frequency radio interferometer, operating in the 10-85 MHz frequency range, currently under construction at the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Observatory in France. It is a phased array instrument with a very dense uv coverage at short baselines, making it one of the most sensitive instruments for 21 cm cosmology analyses at these frequencies. Our analysis adopts the foreground subtraction approach, in which sky sources are modeled and subtracted through calibration and residual foregrounds are subsequently removed using Gaussian process regression. The final power spectra are constructed from the gridded residual data cubes in the uv plane. Signal injection tests are performed at each step of the analysis pipeline, the relevant pipeline settings are optimized to ensure minimal signal loss, and any signal suppression is accounted for through a bias correction on our final upper limits. We obtain a best 2$\sigma$ upper limit of $2.4\times 10^7$ $\text{mK}^{2}$ at $z$ = 20.3 and $k$ = 0.041 $h\,\text{cMpc}^{-1}$. We see a strong excess power in the data, making our upper limits two orders of magnitude higher than the thermal noise limit. With the advent of multi-wavelength electromagnetic observations of neutron stars, spanning many decades in photon energies, from radio wavelengths up to X-rays and $\gamma$-rays, it becomes possible to significantly constrain the geometry and the location of the associated emission regions. In this work, we use results from the modelling of thermal X-ray observations of PSR~J0030+0451 from the NICER mission and phase-aligned radio and $\gamma$-ray pulse profiles to constrain the geometry of an off-centred dipole able to reproduce the light-curves in these respective bands simultaneously. To this aim, we deduce a configuration with a simple dipole off-centred from the location of the centre of the thermal X-ray hot spots and show that the geometry is compatible with independent constraints from radio and $\gamma$-ray pulsations only, leading to a fixed magnetic obliquity of $\alpha \approx 75\deg$ and a line of sight inclination angle of $\zeta \approx 54\deg$. We demonstrate that an off-centred dipole cannot be rejected by accounting for the thermal X-ray pulse profiles. Moreover, the crescent shape of one spot is interpreted as the consequence of a small scale surface dipole on top of the large scale off-centred dipole., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The SPectrogram Analysis and Cataloguing Environment (SPACE) tool is an interactive python tool designed to label radio emission features of interest in a time-frequency map (called 'dynamic spectrum'). The program uses Matplotlib's Polygon Selector widget to allow a user to select and edit an undefined number of vertices on top of the dynamic spectrum before closing the shape (polygon). Multiple polygons may be drawn on any spectrum, and the feature name along with the coordinates for each polygon vertex are saved into a '.json' file as per the 'Time-Frequency Catalogue' (TFCat) format along with other data such as the feature id, observer name, and data units. We investigate the beaming of 11 Io-Jupiter decametric (Io-DAM) emissions observed by Juno/Waves, the Nan\c cay Decameter Array and NenuFAR. Using an up-to-date magnetic field model and three methods to position the active Io Flux Tube (IFT), we accurately locate the radiosources and determine their emission angle $\theta$ from the local magnetic field vector. These methods use (i) updated models of the IFT equatorial lead angle, (ii) ultraviolet (UV) images of Jupiter's aurorae and (iii) multi-point radio measurements. The kinetic energy $E_{e-}$ of source electrons is then inferred from $\theta$ in the framework of the Cyclotron Maser Instability. The precise position of the active IFT achieved from methods (ii,iii) can be used to test the effective torus plasma density. Simultaneous radio/UV observations reveal that multiple Io-DAM arcs are associated with multiple UV spots and provide the first direct evidence of an Io-DAM arc associated with a trans-hemispheric beam UV spot. Multi-point radio observations probe the Io-DAM sources at various altitudes, times and hemispheres. Overall, $\theta$ varies a function of frequency (altitude), by decreasing from $75^\circ-80^\circ$ to $70^\circ-75^\circ$ over $10-40$ MHz with slightly larger values in the northern hemisphere, and independently varies as a function of time (or longitude of Io). Its uncertainty of a few degrees is dominated by the error on the longitude of the active IFT. The inferred values of $E_{e-}$ also vary as a function of altitude and time. For the 11 investigated cases, they range from 3 to 16 keV, with a $6.6\pm2.7$ keV average.

We use multi-spacecraft observations of invididual type III radio bursts in order to calculate the directivity of the radio emission, to be compared to the results of ray-tracing simulations of the radio-wave propagation and probe the plasma properties of the inner heliosphere. Ray-tracing simulations of radio-wave propagation with anisotropic scattering on density inhomogeneities are used to study the directivity of radio emissions. Simultaneous observations of type III radio bursts by four widely-separated spacecraft are used to calculate the directivity and position of the radio sources. The shape of the directivity pattern deduced for individual events is compared to the directivity pattern resulting from the ray-tracing simulations. We show that simultaneous observations of type radio III bursts by 4 different probes provide the opportunity to estimate the radio source positions and the directivity of the radio emission. The shape of the directivity varies from one event to another, and is consistent with anisotropic scattering of the radio-waves.

PSR B0950+08 is a bright non-recycled pulsar whose single-pulse fluence variability is reportedly large. Based on observations at two widely separated frequencies, 55 MHz (NenuFAR) and 1.4 GHz (Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope), we review the properties of these single pulses. We conclude that they are more similar to ordinary pulses of radio emission than to a special kind of short and bright Giant Pulses, observed from only a handful of pulsars. We argue that temporal variation of properties of interstellar medium along the line of sight to this nearby pulsar, namely the fluctuating size of decorrelation bandwidth of diffractive scintillation makes important contribution to observed single-pulse fluence variability. We further present interesting structures in the low-frequency single-pulse spectra that resemble the "sad trombones" seen in Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs); although for PSR B0950+08 the upward frequency drift is also routinely present. We explain these spectral features with radius-to-frequency mapping, similar to the model developed by Wang et al. (2019) for FRBs. Finally, we speculate that microsecond-scale fluence variability of the general pulsar population remains poorly known, and that its further study may bring important clues about the nature of FRBs., Comment: Accepted by A&A. In order to allow for a comparison with the measurements from other antenna systems, the voltage power spectral density measured by the Radio and Plasma waves receiver (RPW) on board Solar Orbiter needs to be converted into physical quantities that depend on the intrinsic properties of the radiation itself.The main goal of this study is to perform a calibration of the RPW dipole antenna system that allows for the conversion of the voltage power spectral density measured at the receiver's input into the incoming flux density. We used space observations from the Thermal Noise Receiver (TNR) and the High Frequency Receiver (HFR) to perform the calibration of the RPW dipole antenna system. Observations of type III bursts by the Wind spacecraft are used to obtain a reference radio flux density for cross-calibrating the RPW dipole antennas. The analysis of a large sample of HFR observations (over about ten months), carried out jointly with an analysis of TNR-HFR data and prior to the antennas' deployment, allowed us to estimate the reference system noise of the TNR-HFR receivers. We obtained the effective length of the RPW dipoles and the reference system noise of TNR-HFR in space, where the antennas and pre-amplifiers are embedded in the solar wind plasma. The obtained $l_{eff}$ values are in agreement with the simulation and measurements performed on the ground. By investigating the radio flux intensities of 35 type III bursts simultaneously observed by Solar Orbiter and Wind, we found that while the scaling of the decay time as a function of the frequency is the same for the Waves and RPW instruments, their median values are higher for the former. This provides the first observational evidence that Type III radio waves still undergo density scattering, even when they propagate from the source, in a medium with a plasma frequency that is well below their own emission frequency.

We present radio observations of the most slowly rotating known radio pulsar PSR J0250+5854. With a 23.5 s period, it is close, or even beyond, the $P$-$\dot{P}$ diagram region thought to be occupied by active pulsars. The simultaneous observations with FAST, the Chilbolton and Effelsberg LOFAR international stations, and NenuFAR represent a five-fold increase in the spectral coverage of this object, with the detections at 1250 MHz (FAST) and 57 MHz (NenuFAR) being the highest- and lowest-frequency published respectively to date. We measure a flux density of $4\pm2$ $\mu$Jy at 1250 MHz and an exceptionally steep spectral index of $-3.5^{+0.2}_{-1.5}$, with a turnover below $\sim$95 MHz. In conjunction with observations of this pulsar with the GBT and the LOFAR Core, we show that the intrinsic profile width increases drastically towards higher frequencies, contrary to the predictions of conventional radius-to-frequency mapping. We examine polarimetric data from FAST and the LOFAR Core and conclude that its polar cap radio emission is produced at an absolute height of several hundreds of kilometres around 1.5 GHz, similar to other rotation-powered pulsars across the population. Its beam is significantly underfilled at lower frequencies, or it narrows because of the disappearance of conal outriders. Finally, the results for PSR J0250+5854 and other slowly spinning rotation-powered pulsars are contrasted with the radio-detected magnetars. We conclude that magnetars have intrinsically wider radio beams than the slow rotation-powered pulsars, and that consequently the latter's lower beaming fraction is what makes objects such as PSR J0250+5854 so scarce., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Occultations of the Jovian low frequency radio emissions by the Galilean moons have been observed by the PWS instrument of the Galileo spacecraft. We show that the ExPRES (Exoplanetary and Planetary Radio Emission Simulator) code accurately models the temporal occurrence of the occultations in the whole spectral range observed by Galileo/PWS. This validates of the ExPRES code. The method can be applied for preparing the JUICE moon flyby science operation planning. Solar Orbiter is the first space mission observing the solar plasma both in situ and remotely, from a close distance, in and out of the ecliptic. The ultimate goal is to understand how the Sun produces and controls the heliosphere, filling the Solar System and driving the planetary environments. With six remote-sensing and four in-situ instrument suites, the coordination and planning of the operations are essential to address the following four top-level science questions: (1) What drives the solar wind and where does the coronal magnetic field originate? (2) How do solar transients drive heliospheric variability? (3) How do solar eruptions produce energetic particle radiation that fills the heliosphere? (4) How does the solar dynamo work and drive connections between the Sun and the heliosphere? Maximising the mission's science return requires considering the characteristics of each orbit, including the relative position of the spacecraft to Earth (affecting downlink rates), trajectory events (such as gravitational assist manoeuvres), and the phase of the solar activity cycle. Furthermore, since each orbit's science telemetry will be downloaded over the course of the following orbit, science operations must be planned at mission level, rather than at the level of individual orbits. It is important to explore the way in which those science questions are translated into an actual plan of observations that fits into the mission, thus ensuring that no opportunities are missed. First, the overarching goals are broken down into specific, answerable questions along with the required observations and the so-called Science Activity Plan (SAP) is developed to achieve this. NenuFAR (New extension in Nan\c{c}ay upgrading LoFAR) is a new radio telescope developed and built on the site of the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Observatory. It is designed to observe the largely unexplored frequency window from 10 to 85\,MHz, offering a high sensitivity across its full bandwidth. NenuFAR has started its "early science" operation in July 2019, with 58\% of its final collecting area being available. Pulsars are one of the major topics for the scientific exploitation of this frequency range and represent an important challenge in terms of instrumentation. Designing instrumentation at these frequencies is complicated by the need to compensate for the effects of both the interstellar medium and the ionosphere on the observed signal. Our real-time pipeline LUPPI (Low frequency Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrumentation) is able to cope with a high data rate and to provide real-time coherent de-dispersion down to the lowest frequencies reached by NenuFAR (10\,MHz). The full backend functionality is described, as well as the main pulsar observing modes (folded, single-pulse, waveform, and dynamic spectrum). This instrumentation allowed us to detect 172 pulsars in our first targeted search below 85\,MHz, including 10 millisecond pulsars (6 of which detected for the first time below 100 MHz). We also present some of the "early science" results of NenuFAR on pulsars: a high frequency resolution mapping of PSR B1919$+$21's emission profile and a detailed observation of single-pulse sub-structures from PSR~B0809$+$74 down to 16\,MHz, the high rate of giant-pulse emission from the Crab pulsar detected at 68.7\,MHz (43 events/min), and the illustration of the very good timing performance of the instrumentation, allowing us to study dispersion measure variations in great detail., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, submitted to A&A

The Europlanet-2020 programme, which ended on Aug 31st, 2019, included an activity called VESPA (Virtual European Solar and Planetary Access), which focused on adapting Virtual Observatory (VO) techniques to handle Planetary Science data. This paper describes some aspects of VESPA at the end of this 4-years development phase and at the onset of the newly selected Europlanet-2024 programme starting in 2020. The main objectives of VESPA are to facilitate searches both in big archives and in small databases, to enable data analysis by providing simple data access and online visualization functions, and to allow research teams to publish derived data in an interoperable environment as easily as possible. VESPA encompasses a wide scope, including surfaces, atmospheres, magnetospheres and planetary plasmas, small bodies, helio-physics, exoplanets, and spectroscopy in solid phase. This system relies in particular on standards and tools developed for the Astronomy VO (IVOA) and extends them where required to handle specificities of Solar System studies. It also aims at making the VO compatible with tools and protocols developed in different contexts, for instance GIS for planetary surfaces, or time series tools for plasma-related measurements. All magnetized planets are known to produce intense non thermal radio emissions through a mechanism known as Cyclotron Maser Instability (CMI), requiring the presence of accelerated electrons generally arising from magnetospheric current systems. In return, radio emissions are a good probe of these current systems and acceleration processes. The CMI generates highly anisotropic emissions and leads to important visibility effects, which have to be taken into account when interpreting the data. Several studies showed that modeling the radio source anisotropic beaming pattern can reveal a wealth of physical information about the planetary or exoplanetary magnetospheres that produce these emissions. We present a numerical tool, called ExPRES (Exoplanetary and Planetary Radio Emission Simulator), which is able to reproduce the occurrence in time-frequency plane of CMI-generated radio emissions from planetary magnetospheres, exoplanets or star-planet interacting systems. Special attention is given to the computation of the radio emission beaming at and near its source. We explain what physical information about the system can be drawn from such radio observations, and how it is obtained. These information may include the location and dynamics of the radio sources, the type of current system leading to electron acceleration and their energy and, for exoplanetary systems, the magnetic field strength, the orbital period of the emitting body and the rotation period, tilt and offset of the planetary magnetic field. Most of these parameters can be remotely measured only via radio observations. The ExPRES code provides the proper framework of analysis and interpretation for past (Cassini, Voyager, Galileo), current (Juno, groundbased radiotelescopes) and future (BepiColombo, Juice) observations of planetary radio emissions, as well as for future detection of radio emissions from exoplanetary systems., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Throughout 2017, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observed the northern far-ultraviolet aurorae of Saturn at northern solstice, during the Cassini Grand Finale. These conditions provided a complete viewing of the northern auroral region from Earth and a maximal solar illumination, expected to maximize the ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling. In this study, we analyze 24 HST images concurrently with Cassini measurements of Saturn's Kilometric Radiation and solar wind parameters predicted by two MHD models. The aurorae reveal highly variable components, down to timescales of minutes, radiating 7 to 124 +/-11 GW. They include a nightside-shifted main oval, unexpectedly frequent and bright cusp emissions and a dayside low latitude oval. On average, these emissions display a strong Local Time dependence with two maxima at dawn and pre-midnight, the latter being newly observed and attributed to nightside injections possibly associated with solstice conditions. These results provide a reference frame to analyze Cassini in situ measurements, whether simultaneous or not.

By analysing a database of 26 years of observations of Jupiter with the Nancay Decameter Array, we unambiguously identify the radio emissions caused by the Ganymede-Jupiter interaction. We study the energetics of these emissions via the distributions of their intensities, duration, and power, and compare them to the energetics of the Io-Jupiter radio emissions. This allows us to demonstrate that the average emitted radio power is proportional to the Poynting flux from the rotating Jupiter's magnetosphere intercepted by the obstacle. We then generalize this result to the radio-magnetic scaling law that appears to apply to all plasma interactions between a magnetized flow and an obstacle, magnetized or not. Extrapolating this scaling law to the parameter range corresponding to hot Jupiters, we predict large radio powers emitted by these objects, that should result in detectable radio flux with new-generation radiotelescopes. Comparing the distributions of the durations of Ganymede-Jupiter and Io-Jupiter emission events also suggests that while the latter results from quasi-permanent Alfven wave excitation by Io, the former likely results from sporadic reconnection between magnetic fields Ganymede and Jupiter, controlled by Jupiter's magnetic field geometry and modulated by its rotation., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The high latitude radio emissions produced by the Cyclotron Maser Instability (CMI) in Jupiter's magnetosphere extend from a few kHz to 40 MHz. Part of the decametric emissions is of auroral origin, and part is driven by the moons Io, Europa and Ganymede. After summarizing the method used to identify Jupiter-satellite radio emissions, which consists in comparing space- and ground-based radio observations to ExPRES simulations of CMI-driven emissions in the time-frequency plane, we present a parametric study of the free parameters required by the ExPRES code (electron distribution function and resonant energy, magnetic field model, lead angle, and altitude of the ionospheric cut-off) in order to assess the accuracy of our simulations in the Io-Jupiter case. We find that Io-DAM arcs are fairly modeled by loss-cone driven CMI with electrons of 1-10 keV energy, using the ISaAC, VIPAL or VIP4 magnetic field model and a simple sinusoidal lead angle model. The altitude of the ionospheric cut-off has a marginal impact on the simulations. Analyzing a database of 26 years of observations of Jupiter from the Nan\c{c}ay Decameter Array, we study the occurrence of Io-independent emissions as a function of the orbital phase of the other Galilean satellites and Amalthea. We identify unambiguously the emissions induced by Ganymede and characterize their intervals of occurrence in CML and Ganymede phase and longitude. We also find hints of emissions induced by Europa and, surprisingly, by Amalthea. The Nancay Decameter Array (NDA) routinely observes low frequency (10-100 MHz) radio emissions of Jupiter and the Sun since 4 decades. The NDA observations, acquired with a variety of receivers with increasing performances, were the basis for numerous studies of jovian and solar radio emissions and now form a unique long-term database spanning >3 solar cycles and jovian revolutions. In addition, the NDA historically brought a fruitful support to space-based radio observatories of the heliosphere, to multi-wavelength analyses of solar activity and contributes to the development of space weather services. After having summarized the NDA characteristics, this article presents latest instrumental and database developments, some recent scientific results and perspectives for the next decade., Comment: Refereed article

The VESPA data access system focuses on applying Virtual Observatory (VO) standards and tools to Planetary Science. Building on a previous EC-funded Europlanet program, it has reached maturity during the first year of a new Europlanet 2020 program (started in 2015 for 4 years). The infrastructure has been upgraded to handle many fields of Solar System studies, with a focus both on users and data providers. This paper describes the broad lines of the current VESPA infrastructure as seen by a potential user, and provides examples of real use cases in several thematic areas. Since 2003 the Planetary Virtual Observatory and Laboratory (PVOL) has been storing and serving publicly through its web site a large database of amateur observations of the Giant Planets (Hueso et al., 2010a). These images are used for scientific research of the atmospheric dynamics and cloud structure on these planets and constitute a powerful resource to address time changing phenomena in their atmospheres. Advances over the last decade in observation techniques, and a wider conscience by professional astronomers of the quality of amateur observations, have resulted in the necessity to upgrade this database. We here present major advances in the PVOL database that has evolved into a full virtual planetary observatory encompassing also observations of Mercury, Venus, Mars, the Moon and the Galilean satellites. Besides the new objects, the images can be tagged and the database allows simple and complex searches over the data. The new web service: PVOL2 is available online in http://pvol2.ehu.eus/ , contains a fully functional search engine and constitutes one of the many services included in VESPA (Virtual Europan Solar and Planetary Access). Data from PVOL2 can be served from the VESPA portal using the EPN-TAP protocol. PVOL2 also provides long-term storage to amateur observations containing about 30,000 amateur observations starting in the year 2000. Current and past observations from the amateur community provide a global view of the Solar System planets over the years with several possibilities for scientific analysis and amateur astronomers involvement in planetary science., Comment: Accepted in Planetary and Space Sciences. The Europlanet 2020 Research Infrastructure will include new Planetary Space Weather Services (PSWS) that will extend the concepts of space weather and space situational awareness to other planets in our Solar System and in particular to spacecraft that voyage through it. PSWS will make five entirely new toolkits accessible to the research community and to industrial partners planning for space missions: a general planetary space weather toolkit, as well as three toolkits dedicated to the following key planetary environments: Mars, comets, and outer planets. This will give the European planetary science community new methods, interfaces, functionalities and/or plugins dedicated to planetary space weather in the tools and models available within the partner institutes. It will also create a novel event-diary toolkit aiming at predicting and detecting planetary events like meteor showers and impacts. A variety of tools are available for tracing propagation of planetary and/or solar events through the Solar System and modelling the response of the planetary environment (surfaces, atmospheres, ionospheres, and magnetospheres) to those events. But these tools were not originally designed for planetary event prediction and space weather applications. PSWS will provide the additional research and tailoring required to apply them for these purposes. PSWS will be to review, test, improve and adapt methods and tools available within the partner institutes in order to make prototype planetary event and space weather services operational in Europe at the end of the programme. To achieve its objectives PSWS will use a few tools and standards developed for the Astronomy Virtual Observatory (VO). The STEREO/WAVES (SWAVES) experiment on board the two STEREO spacecraft (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) launched on 25 October 2006 is dedicated to the measurement of the radio spectrum at frequencies between a few kilohertz and 16 MHz. The SWAVES antenna system consists of 6 m long orthogonal monopoles designed to measure the electric component of the radio waves. With this configuration direction finding of radio sources and polarimetry (analysis of the polarization state) of incident radio waves is possible. For the evaluation of the SWAVES data the receiving properties of the antennas, distorted by the radiation coupling with the spacecraft body and other onboard devices, have to be known accurately. In the present context, these properties are described by the antenna effective length vectors. We present the results of an in-flight calibration of the SWAVES antennas using the observations of the nonthermal terrestrial auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) during STEREO roll maneuvers in an early stage of the mission. A least squares method combined with a genetic algorithm was applied to find the effective length vectors of the STEREO Behind (STEREO-B)/WAVES antennas in a quasi-static frequency range ($L_{antenna} \ll \lambda_{wave}$) which fit best to the model and observed AKR intensity profiles. The obtained results confirm the former SWAVES antenna analysis by rheometry and numerical simulations. A final set of antenna parameters is recommended as a basis for evaluations of the SWAVES data.

We have performed a statistical study of $152$ Type III radio bursts observed by Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO)/Waves between May 2007 and February 2013. We have investigated the flux density between $125$kHz and $16$MHz. Both high- and low-frequency cutoffs have been observed in $60\,%$ of events suggesting an important role of propagation. As already reported by previous authors, we observed that the maximum flux density occurs at $1$MHz on both spacecraft. We have developed a simplified analytical model of the flux density as a function of radial distance and compared it to the STEREO/Waves data., Comment: published in Solar Physics

A Data Access Protocol has been set up to search and retrieve Planetary Science data in general. This protocol will allow the user to select a subset of data from an archive in a standard way, based on the IVOA Table Access Protocol (TAP). The TAP mechanism is completed by an underlying Data Model and reference dictionaries. This paper describes the principle of the EPN- TAP protocol and interfaces, underlines the choices that have been made, and discusses possible evolutions., Comment: 21 pages. In the framework of the Europlanet-RI program, a prototype of Virtual Observatory dedicated to Planetary Science was defined. Most of the activity was dedicated to the elaboration of standards to retrieve and visualize data in this field, and to provide light procedures to teams who wish to contribute with on-line data services. The architecture of this VO system and selected solutions are presented here, together with existing demonstrators.

On 17 October 2008, the Cassini spacecraft crossed the southern sources of Saturn kilometric radiation (SKR), while flying along high-latitude nightside magnetic field lines. In situ measurements allowed us to characterize for the first time the source region of an extra-terrestrial auroral radio emission. Using radio, magnetic field and particle observations, we show that SKR sources are surrounded by a hot tenuous plasma, in a region of upward field-aligned currents. Magnetic field lines supporting radio sources map a continuous, high-latitude and spiral-shaped auroral oval observed on the dawnside, consistent with enhanced auroral activity. Investigating the Cyclotron Maser Instability (CMI) as a mechanism responsible for SKR generation, we find that observed cutoff frequencies are consistent with radio waves amplified perpendicular to the magnetic field by hot (6 to 9 keV) resonant electrons, measured locally.

The Cassini mission crossed the source region of the Saturn kilometric radiation (SKR) on 17 October 2008. On this occasion, the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) experiment detected both local and distant radio sources, while plasma parameters were measured in situ by the magnetometer (MAG) and the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS). A goniopolarimetric inversion was applied to RPWS 3-antenna electric measurements to determine the wave vector k and the complete state of polarization of detected waves. We identify broadband extraordinary (X) as well as narrowband ordinary (O) mode SKR at low frequencies. Within the source region, SKR is emitted just above the X mode cutoff frequency in a hot plasma, with a typical electron-to-wave energy conversion efficiency of 1% (2% peak). The knowledge of the k-vector is then used to derive the locus of SKR sources in the kronian magnetosphere, that shows X and O components emanating from the same regions. We also compute the associated beaming angle at the source theta'=(k,-B) either from (i) in situ measurements or a model of the magnetic field vector or from (ii) polarization measurements. Obtained results, similar for both modes, suggest quasi-perpendicular emission for local sources, whereas the beaming pattern of distant sources appears as a hollow cone with a frequency-dependent constant aperture angle: theta'=75{\deg}+/-15{\deg} below 300kHz, decreasing at higher frequencies to reach theta'(1000kHz)=50{\deg}+/-25{\deg}. Finally, we investigate quantitatively the SKR polarization state, observed to be strongly elliptical at the source, and quasi-purely circular for sources located beyond approximately 2 kronian radii. We show that conditions of weak mode coupling are achieved along the ray path, under which the magneto-ionic theory satisfactorily describes the evolution of the observed polarization.
