Abstract

This volume is a collection of contributions from the 5th Workshop on Machine Learning and Interpretation in Neuroimaging (MLINI) at the Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS 2015) conference. Modern multivariate statistical methods developed in the rapidly growing field of machine learning are being increasingly applied to various problems in neuroimaging, from cognitive state detection to clinical diagnosis and prognosis. Multivariate pattern analysis methods are designed to examine complex relationships between high-dimensional signals, such as brain images, and outcomes of interest, such as the category of a stimulus, a type of a mental state of a subject, or a specific mental disorder. Such techniques are in contrast with the traditional mass-univariate approaches that dominated neuroimaging in the past and treated each individual imaging measurement in isolation. We believe that machine learning has a prominent role in shaping how questions in neuroscience are framed, and that the machine-learning mind set is now entering modern psychology and behavioral studies. It is also equally important that practical applications in these fields motivate a rapidly evolving line or research in the machine learning community. In parallel, there is an intense interest in learning more about brain function in the context of rich naturalistic environments and scenes. Efforts to go beyond highly specific paradigms that pinpoint a single function, towards schemes for measuring the interaction with natural and more varied scene are made. The goal of the workshop is to pinpoint the most pressing issues and common challenges across the neuroscience, neuroimaging, psychology and machine learning fields, and to sketch future directions and open questions in the light of novel methodology.

Abstract

To understand how the human visual system analyzes images, it is essential to know the structure of the visual environment. In particular, natural images display consistent statistical properties that distinguish them from random luminance distributions. We have studied the geometric regularities of oriented elements (edges or line segments) present in an ensemble of visual scenes, asking how much information the presence of a segment in a particular location of the visual scene carries about the presence of a second segment at different relative positions and orientations. We observed strong long-range correlations in the distribution of oriented segments that extend over the whole visual field. We further show that a very simple geometric rule, cocircularity, predicts the arrangement of segments in natural scenes, and that different geometrical arrangements show relevant differences in their scaling properties. Our results show similarities to geometric features of previous physiological and psychophysical studies. Abstract

Le projet TCP/MLI/3402 FAO intitulé « Appui à la lutte contre la mouche tsé-tsé et les trypanosomoses dans les cercles de Sikasso et Kadiolo, au Mali » a été crée pour appuyer le Projet de Lutte contre la Mouche tsé-tsé et les trypanosomoses (PLMT) dans ses efforts de contrôle des tsé-tsé et trypanosomes. Son objectif était de créer les conditions amenant l’état, les collectivités territoriales et les communautés villageoises à prendre en charge la lutte contre la trypanosomose et ses vecteurs de façon durable. Dans les cercles de Kadiolo (20 villages) et Sikasso (15 villages) 35 villages ont été prospectés. Pour cette étude 350 pièges biconiques Challier – Laveissière ont été posés dans les galeries et au niveau des points de contact des différents cours d’eau et géo référencés à l’aide de GPS. La prospection entomologique dans la zone de l’étude a permis la capture de deux espèces de glossines : Glossina palpalis gambiensis et Glossina tachinoïdes. Le nombre total de glossines capturées est 786 dont 405 mâles et 381 femelles. Parmi les glossines capturées, il ya 691 Glossina palpalis gambiensis dont 349 mâles et 342 femelles, 95 Glossina tachinoïdes dont 56 mâles et 39 femelles. Le sexe ratio est de 1,12, donc légèrement en faveur des mâles. Le taux d’infection des glossines qui concerne le cercle de Kadiolo seulement est 0%. La Densité Apparente de glossines par Piège et par jour (DAP) dans la zone du projet est 2,2.

Abstract

Human population growth, climate change and economic development are causing major environmental modifications in Western Africa, which will have important repercussions on the epidemiology of sleeping sickness. A new initiative, the Atlas of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), aims at assembling and geo-referencing all epidemiological data derived from both active screening activities and passive surveillance. A geographic database enables to generate up-to-date disease maps at a range of scales and of unprecedented spatial accuracy. We present preliminary results for seven West African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Togo) and briefly discuss the relevance of the Atlas for future monitoring, control and research activities.

20. Analysis of violin combination tones and their contribution to Tartini's third tone

Abstract

It is widely accepted that the famous Tartini's third tone, i.e., the appearance of an additional third tone of lower frequency when playing a dyad on the violin, is a subjective phenomenon generated by the listener's cochlear nonlinearity. However, the recent demonstration that additional tones of audible amplitude can also be generated by the violin itself during playing of a dyad (violin combination tones), raises the question if these tones might have influenced Tartini's third sound perception. The experiments reported here were made to ascertain this possibility. To this end, following Tartini experiments, several dyads played by either one violin or two violins playing one note of the dyad each, were recorded. The analysis of the spectra shows that violin combination tones are present in all the dyads investigated, but exclusively when the dyad is played by a single violin and not when the same dyad is played by two violins. Tartini found the third tones to be the same in both conditions, which means that violin combination tones in his experiments were either absent or too small to affect the perception of the subjective third tones arising from cochlear distortion.

21. Myosin lever disposition during length oscillations when power stroke tilting is reduced

Abstract

M3 reflection intensity ([I.sub.M3]) from tetanized, intact skeletal muscle fiber bundles was measured during sinusoidal length oscillations at 2.8 kHz, a frequency at which the myosin motor's power stroke is greatly reduced. [I.sub.M3] signals were approximately sinusoidal, but showed a 'double peak' distortion previously observed only at lower oscillation frequencies. A tilting lever arm model simulated this distortion, where [I.sub.M3] was calculated from the molecular structure of myosin subfragment 1 (S1). Simulations showed an isometric lever arm disposition close to normal to the filament axis at isometric tension, similar to that found using lower oscillation frequencies, where the power stroke contributes more toward total S1 movement. Inclusion of a second detached S1 in each actin-bound myosin dimer increased simulated [I.sub.M3] signal amplitude and improved agreement with the experimental data. The best agreement was obtained when detached heads have a fixed orientation, insensitive to length changes, and similar to that of attached heads at tetanus plateau. This configuration also accounts for the variations in relative intensity of the two main peaks of the M3 reflection substructure after a length change. This evidence of an [I.sub.M3] signal distortion when power stroke tilting is suppressed, provided that a large enough amplitude of length oscillation is used, is consistent with the tilting lever arm model of the power stroke. skeletal muscle; X-ray diffraction; muscle mechanics; molecular motors; subfragment 1 structure

Abstract

Non-cross-bridge calcium-dependent stiffness in frog muscle fibers. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 286: C1353-C1357, 2004. First published January 28, 2004; 10.1152/ajpcell.00493.2003.--At the end of the force transient elicited by a fast stretch applied to an activated frog muscle fiber, the force settles to a steady level exceeding the isometric level preceding the stretch. We showed previously that this excess of tension, referred to as 'static tension,' is due to the elongation of some elastic sarcomere structure, outside the cross bridges. The stiffness of this structure, 'static stiffness,' increased upon stimulation following a time course well distinct from tension and roughly similar to intracellular [Ca.sup.2+] concentration. In the experiments reported here, we investigated the possible role of [Ca.sup.2+] in static stiffness by comparing static stiffness measurements in the presence of [Ca.sup.2+] release inhibitors (D600, Dantrolene, [sup.2][H.sub.2]O) and cross-bridge formation inhibitors [2,3-butanedione monoxime (BDM), hypertonicity]. Both series of agents inhibited tension; however, only D600, Dantrolene, and [sup.2][H.sub.2]O decreased at the same time static stiffness, whereas BDM and hypertonicity left static stiffness unaltered. These results indicate that [Ca.sup.2+], in addition to promoting cross-bridge formation, increases the stiffness of an (unidentified) elastic structure of the sarcomere. Abstract

Biocrusts are key biotic components of arid and semi-arid ecosystems worldwide. In the semi-arid ecosystems of north-eastern Patagonia, the moss biocrust is present both beneath shrubs and in intershrub spaces. In this study we ran a series of field and greenhouse trials aimed at quantifying the moss biocrust cover at sites that differed in grazing and/or shrub mechanical (chaining) disturbance and evaluating its seed entrapping capacity, and its effect on the superficial water balance and grass seedling growth. Grazing or the combined effect of grazing and chaining impacted negatively on the moss biocrust cover. The presence of moss biocrust facilitated seed entrapment and increased the seed density of perennial grasses in the soil seed bank, improved the superficial water balance, and enhanced grass seedling growth. In conclusion, in the semi-arid shrublands in north-eastern Patagonia, the moss biocrust appeared vulnerable to grazing and shrub mechanical disturbance, and it showed functional roles that may facilitate seedling establishment for perennial grasses. Abstract

Drawing an inspiration from behavioral studies of human decision making, we propose here a more general and flexible parametric framework for reinforcement learning that extends standard Q-learning to a two-stream model for processing positive and negative rewards, and allows to incorporate a wide range of reward-processing biases -- an important component of human decision making which can help us better understand a wide spectrum of multi-agent interactions in complex real-world socioeconomic systems, as well as various neuropsychiatric conditions associated with disruptions in normal reward processing. From the computational perspective, we observe that the proposed Split-QL model and its clinically inspired variants consistently outperform standard Q-Learning and SARSA methods, as well as recently proposed Double Q-Learning approaches, on simulated tasks with particular reward distributions, a real-world dataset capturing human decision-making in gambling tasks, and the Pac-Man game in a lifelong learning setting across different reward stationarities., Published in AAMAS 2020 as a full paper. Abstract

Background: Angiopoietin 1 and 2 regulate angiogenesis and vascular remodelling by interacting with the tyrosine kinase receptor Tie2, and inhibition of angiogenesis has shown promise in the treatment of ovarian cancer. We aimed to assess whether trebananib, a peptibody that inhibits binding of angiopoietin 1 and 2 to Tie2, improved progression-free survival when added to carboplatin and paclitaxel as first-line therapy in advanced epithelial ovarian, primary fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer in a phase 3 clinical trial. Methods: TRINOVA-3, a multicentre, multinational, phase 3, double-blind study, was done at 206 investigational sites (hospitals and cancer centres)in 14 countries. Eligible patients were aged 18 years or older with biopsy-confirmed International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO)stage III to IV epithelial ovarian, primary peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancers, and an ECOG performance status of 0 or 1. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (2:1)using a permuted block method (block size of six patients)to receive six cycles of paclitaxel (175 mg/m2)and carboplatin (area under the serum concentration-time curve 5 or 6)every 3 weeks, plus weekly intravenous trebananib 15 mg/kg or placebo. Maintenance therapy with trebananib or placebo continued for up to 18 additional months. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival, as assessed by the investigators, in the intention-to-treat population. Safety analyses included patients who received at least one dose of study treatment. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01493505, and is complete. Findings: Between Jan 30, 2012, and Feb 25, 2014, 1164 patients were screened and 1015 eligible patients were randomly allocated to treatment (678 to trebananib and 337 to placebo). After a median follow-up of 27·4 months (IQR 17·7–34·2), 626 patients had progression-free survival events (405 [60%]of 678 in the trebananib group and 221 [66%]of 337 in the placebo group). Median progression-free survival did not differ between the trebananib group (15·9 months [15·0–17·6])and the placebo group (15·0 months [12·6–16·1])groups (hazard ratio 0·93 [95% CI 0·79–1·09]; p=0·36). 512 (76%)of 675 patients in the trebananib group and 237 (71%)of 336 in the placebo group had grade 3 or worse treatment-emergent adverse events; of which the most common events were neutropenia (trebananib 238 [35%]vs placebo 126 [38%])anaemia (76 [11%]vs 40 [12%]), and leucopenia (81 [12%]vs 35 [10%]). 269 (40%)patients in the trebananib group and 104 (31%)in the placebo group had serious adverse events. Two fatal adverse events in the trebananib group were considered related to trebananib, paclitaxel, and carboplatin (lung infection and neutropenic colitis); two were considered to be related to paclitaxel and carboplatin (general physical health deterioration and platelet count decreased). No treatment-related fatal adverse events occurred in the placebo group. Interpretation: Trebananib plus carboplatin and paclitaxel did not improve progression-free survival as first-line treatment for advanced ovarian cancer. The combination of trebananib plus carboplatin and paclitaxel did not produce new safety signals. These results show that trebananib in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel is minimally effective in this patient population. Funding: Amgen. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

"It is physically certain that given two simultaneous loud and prolonged tones one can hear a third tone, different from the played sounds": with these words taken from his essay Trattato di musica secondo la vera scienza dell'armonia published in 1754 Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770), celebrated violinist, and researcher of musical theory and "physicomathematical harmonist" (Barbieri, 1990) introduces his discovery, made some years before (in 1713), of the socalled third tone. As explained by Tartini himself, if a listener stands halfway between two violin or oboe players some steps apart, he can hear another tone, in addition to the played notes (principal or primary notes), called by Tartini the "third tone"
