The metacarpal bone mineral density of 136 healthy feedlot beef cattle of four different breeds (Charolaise, Limousine, Irish Crossbreed and Slovakian Crossbreed) raised and fed on standard conditions was measured by means of a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry technique in an ex vivo study design. The average reference values (mean ± SD) of bone mineral density (BMD) for animals aged between 12 and 22 months and weighing between 236 and 546 kg have been reported and the effects of (i) breed, (ii) gender, (iii) age and (iv) body weight on bone mineral density have been considered. A significant difference (i) among different breeds and (ii) between genders resulted, whereas a high correlation between bone density and (iii) age and (iv) body weight was detected within the same breed and gender, with body weight being the most important factor affecting BMD. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To compare different body temperature assessment methods in older people and to assess the role of cognitive and functional characteristics in temperature recordings. BACKGROUND: Axillary gallium-in-glass thermometers are commonly used. Their accuracy depends on the proper placement of the device and their permanence in place for eight minutes. With adequate instruction, well-functioning patients can measure their axillary temperature by themselves, while in cognitively and functionally impaired older people, inadequate understanding of instructions and misplacement of the thermometer might determine significant recording errors. Electronic ear and axillary temperature measurements are faster, but their accuracy has not been demonstrated convincingly with older people. METHODS: Patients (n = 107; aged 65-104 years) were recruited. Barthel Index and Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ) scores were obtained for each patient. Temperature readings were obtained using: the axillary gallium-in-glass thermometer, with (T(nurse)) and without (T(self)) the nurse's assistance; the electronic axillary thermometer (T(el)) and the infrared tympanic thermometer (T(tymp)). The T(nurse) was considered as the reference method. RESULTS: Mean difference and standard deviation (mean +/- SD) in temperature recordings between the different techniques and T(nurse) differed significantly from zero for T(self) (-0.40 SD 0.42) and T(tymp) (+0.19 SD 0.48). No significant differences in temperature recordings emerged between T(nurse) and T(el). In simple linear regression models, the difference between T(self) and T(nurse) significantly correlated with age, gender, SPMSQ score and Barthel Index. Multiple linear regression analysis showed an underestimation of body temperature in older patients with cognitive impairments. CONCLUSION: Unassisted gallium-in-glass axillary temperature assessment is inadequate, in older patients. The differences between T(self) and T(nurse) are significantly influenced by age and mental decline. T(el) provides adequate accuracy. Relevance to clinical practice. In geriatric settings, the electronic axillary thermometer is a safe and accurate alternative to the more traditional gallium-in-glass thermometer, with the advantage of saving time (five seconds in recording vs. eight minutes). Background: Vision has a key role in children's neuromotor, cognitive and social development. Children with visual impairment attain developmental milestones at later stages and are at higher risk of developing psychological disorders and social withdrawn., Aims: We performed a scoping review to summarize the mostly used instruments assessing the impact of visual impairment on quality of life, functioning and participation of children and adolescents. In addition, the main findings of the included studies are discussed., Methods and Procedures: We searched for papers assessing quality of life, functioning and participation of children and adolescents with visual impairment from 0 to 18 years old conducted between 2000 and 2023., Outcomes and Results: In total, 69 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Child self-report, caregivers-proxy and self-report questionnaires as well as interviews were used. The results showed that quality of life, functioning and participation are significantly reduced in children and adolescents with visual impairment, and that the impact depends on different factors (e.g., severity of the impairment, age)., Conclusions and Implications: Considering the significant impact of visual impairment on quality of life, functioning and participation on this population, it is fundamental to develop integrated and multi-dimensional assessment programs that evaluate the impact of visual impairment on those dimensions considering different contexts of life (e.g., family, school, leisure time). WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS?: The present review aims to give an overview of what is known about the impact of visual impairment on quality of life, functioning and participation of children and adolescents. We assumed a biopsychosocial perspective which, in line with the definition of health by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (WHO, 2001), considered how body functions and structures, functioning, participation and environmental factors dynamically interact to define the health, or the disease, status of a person at a certain moment of life. We reported the most used instruments for the assessment of quality of life, participation, and functioning, with a specific interest on Patient-Reported Outcome Measures and self-report measures. By reporting the different instruments used, we gave a broad overview about the available tools that can be used in clinical as well as in research field to assess quality of life, functioning and participation in this population. Additionally, the review of the existing literature allowed us to demonstrate that those dimensions are negatively impacted by visual impairment and thus they should be considered in the assessment programs. Specifically, there is the need to provide more integrated assessment programs that investigate the impact of visual impairment on children and adolescents' social and emotional wellbeing, everyday functioning and social relationship, considering their subjective experience together with the one of caregivers, teachers, health care professionals, and other relevant adults involved in their life. Background: Currently no curative treatment exists for spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). Riluzole repurposing was proposed as a symptomatic treatment in different types of cerebellar ataxia. We report a long-term-follow up under riluzole treatment in SCA type 7., Methods: Six patients received Riluzole 50 mg twice daily on a compassionate use program for a mean of 4.8 years (range 3.5-9). We measured ataxia onset and progression through the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA), and collected extensive ophthalmological data before and after Riluzole treatment. Electrocardiogram and laboratory profile for drug safety were performed every six months., Results: Riluzole treatment showed no effect on visual function in two patients with an advanced retinal damage. Improvements of visual function occurred in four patients followed by ophthalmologic stability up to 5 years after starting treatment. Two patients had a less steep deterioration of ataxia after treatment compared to pre-treatment, during the first 2,5 years of therapy. One showed soon after therapy an improvement of the SARA score, and then overall stability lasting 3,5 years, followed by ataxia worsening. One visually impaired patient without neurological impairment did not worse until the last visit after 3,5 years of follow-up. The remaining 2 patients showed an improvement of SARA scores soon after therapy, and an overall stability lasting respectively 5 and 3 years. No adverse event was registered during the observation period., Discussion: This study suggests a possible beneficial action of Riluzole in SCA7 and provides a detailed description of the ophthalmologic profile of these patients., (© 2024. The aim of this study was to describe the phenotype of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy occurring in pediatric females. This disease generally affects young adult males, but it can occur also in females, and research data in this population is lacking. The very early onset can challenge the diagnosis and delay treatment. We searched PubMed through February 2021 and identified 226 pediatric females with genetically confirmed Leber hereditary optic neuropathy and added a new case of a 3-year-old female. The male-female ratio was 1.8:1; the mean onset age in females was 11 years with the onset at 3 years of age occurring in 3 females only. Acute onset with mild visual impairment was the most common presentation, associated with optic disc edema in 16%. Differential diagnoses are pseudotumor cerebri, optic nerve drusen and optic neuritis. The outcome is poor with partial recovery in 50%, despite some receiving Idebenone therapy.

Aim: To analyse the neuro-ophthalmological data of children referred for further work-up of infantile nystagmus where ophthalmological evaluation had not achieved a diagnosis., Method: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients presenting with infantile nystagmus at our institution between 2007 and 2019. Inclusion criteria were onset before 6 months of age, availability of complete ophthalmic examination, visual electrophysiological tests, and neurological examination. Children with a previous definite ophthalmological diagnosis at onset and those with uncertain nystagmus onset age were not recruited., Results: Out of 142 infants (mean age at nystagmus onset 3.6 mo, SD 1.7, range 0-6 mo; 56 females, 86 males), 23% had neurological nystagmus, 7% mixed neurological and sensory nystagmus, 48% sensory defect, and 22% idiopathic infantile nystagmus. The neurological diagnoses were inborn errors of metabolism, white matter genetic disorders, and brain malformations. The prevalent diagnosis in the sensory defect subgroup was retinal dystrophy., Interpretation: Infantile nystagmus without diagnostic ocular findings may be due to neurological, retinal, and optic nerve disorders or be a benign idiopathic condition. In infants with and without neurological abnormalities, the search for a sensory defect should include visual electrophysiology performed early in the diagnostic pathway., What This Paper Adds: Infantile nystagmus without diagnostic ophthalmological signs has an underlying neurological cause in 30% of cases. Neurological diagnoses include congenital brain malformations, and metabolic and genetic disorders. Sensory defects are part of systemic neurological disorders in 23% of infants. Background: Hippocampal abnormalities have been largely reported in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and are considered to be involved in the pathophysiology of the psychosis. The hippocampus consists of several subfields but it remains unclear their involvement in the early stages of psychosis., Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate volumetric alterations in hippocampal subfields in patients at the first-episode psychosis (FEP)., Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were collected in 134 subjects (58 FEP patients; 76 healthy controls [HC]). A novel automated hippocampal segmentation algorithm was used to segment the hippocampal subfields, based on an atlas constructed from ultra-high resolution imaging on ex vivo hippocampal tissue. The general linear model was used to investigate volume differences between FEP patients and HC, with age, gender and total intracranial volume as covariates., Results: We found significantly lower volumes of bilateral CA1, CA4, and granule cell layer (GCL), and of left CA3, and left molecular layer (ML) in FEP patients compared to HC. Only the volumes of the left hippocampus and its subfields were significantly lower in FEP than HC at the False Discovery Rate (FDR) of 0.1. No correlation was found between hippocampal subfield volume and duration of illness, age of onset, duration of medication, and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS)., Conclusion: We report abnormally low volumes of left hippocampal subfields in patients with FEP, sustaining its role as a putative neural marker of psychosis onset.
