Bosonic bunching is a term used to describe the well-known tendency of bosons to bunch together, and which differentiates their behaviour from that of fermions or classical particles. However, in some situations perfectly indistinguishable bosons may counter-intuitively bunch less than classical, distinguishable particles. Here we report two such counter-intuitive multiphoton bunching effects observed with three photons in a three-mode balanced photonic Fourier interferometer. In this setting, we show indistinguishable photons actually minimize the probability of bunching. We also show that any non-trivial value of the three-photon collective photonic phase leads to a decreased probability of all photons ending up in the same mode, even as we increase pairwise indistinguishability. Our experiments feature engineering of partial indistinguishability scenarios using both the time and the polarization photonic degrees of freedom, and a polarization-transparent 8-mode tunable interferometer with a quantum-dot source of single photons. In the current era of noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers, variational quantum algorithms represent one of the most viable approaches for their application to solve tasks of interest. These algorithms train a parameterized quantum circuit to execute a specific task encoded in a cost function that needs to be minimized using a classical optimizer. In this context, photonic platforms based on reconfigurable integrated optics appear as one of the prominent platforms for the implementation of variational algorithms. In the circuital model of quantum computation based on qubits, to train variational circuits, the parameter shift rule came into being, which allows for the exact calculation of the derivatives of many functions at the output of a quantum circuit, opening up the possibility of using classical optimisation algorithms based on gradient descent. In this paper, we derive a formulation of the parameter shift rule for reconfigurable optical linear circuits based on the Boson Sampling paradigm. This allows us to naturally embed the common types of experimental noise, such as partial distinguishability, and mixedness of the states, thus obtaining a resilient approach. We also present similar rules for the computations of integrals over the variational parameters. Finally, we employ the developed approach to experimentally test variational algorithms with single-photon states processed in a reconfigurable 6-mode universal integrated interferometer. Generation and manipulation of randomness is a relevant task for several applications of information technology. It has been shown that quantum mechanics offers some advantages for this type of task. A promising model for randomness manipulation is provided by the Bernoulli factories, protocols capable of changing the bias of Bernoulli random processes in a controlled way. At first, this framework was proposed and investigated in a fully classical regime. Recent extensions of this model to the quantum case showed the possibility of implementing a wider class of randomness manipulation functions. We propose a Bernoulli factory scheme with quantum states as input and output, using a photonic path-encoding approach. Our scheme is modular, universal, and its functioning is truly oblivious of the input bias, characteristics that were missing in earlier work. We report on experimental implementations using an integrated and fully programmable photonic platform, thus demonstrating the viability of our approach. These results open new paths for randomness manipulation with integrated quantum technologies.

Quantum computing has brought a paradigm change in computer science, where non-classical technologies have promised to outperform their classical counterpart. Such an advantage was only demonstrated for tasks without practical applications, still out of reach for the state-of-art quantum technologies. In this context, a promising strategy to find practical use of quantum computers is to exploit hybrid quantum-classical models, where a quantum device estimates a hard-to-compute quantity, while a classical optimizer trains the parameters of the model. In this work, we demonstrate that single photons and linear optical networks are sufficient for implementing Variational Quantum Algorithms, when the problem specification, or ansatz, is tailored to this specific platform. We show this by a proof-of-principle demonstration of a variational approach to tackle an instance of a factorization task, whose solution is encoded in the ground state of a suitable Hamiltonian. This work which combines Variational Quantum Algorithms with hardware efficient ansatzes for linear-optics networks showcases a promising pathway towards practical applications for photonic quantum platforms.

Recently, machine learning had a remarkable impact, from scientific to everyday-life applications. However, complex tasks often imply unfeasible energy and computational power consumption. Quantum computation might lower such requirements, although it is unclear whether enhancements are reachable by current technologies. Here, we demonstrate a kernel method on a photonic integrated processor to perform a binary classification. We show that our protocol outperforms state-of-the-art kernel methods including gaussian and neural tangent kernels, exploiting quantum interference, and brings a smaller improvement also by single photon coherence. Our scheme does not require entangling gates and can modify the system dimension through additional modes and injected photons. This result opens to more efficient algorithms and to formulating tasks where quantum effects improve standard methods.

A seminal task in quantum information theory is to realize a device able to produce copies of a generic input state with the highest possible output fidelity, thus realizing an \textit{optimal} quantum cloning machine. Recently, the concept of variational quantum cloning was introduced: a quantum machine learning algorithm through which, by exploiting a classical feedback loop informed by the output of a quantum processing unit, the system can self-learn the programming required for an optimal quantum cloning strategy. In this work, we experimentally implement a $1 \rightarrow 2$ variational cloning machine of dual-rail encoded photonic qubits, both for phase-covariant and state-dependent cloning. We exploit a fully programmable 6-mode universal integrated device and classical feedback to reach near-optimal cloning performances. Integrated photonics offers compact and stable manipulation of optical signals in miniaturized chips, with the possibility of changing dynamically their functionality by means of integrated phase shifters. Cryogenic operation of these devices is becoming essential for advancing photonic quantum technologies, accommodating components like quantum light sources, single photon detectors and quantum memories operating at liquid helium temperatures. In this work, we report on a programmable glass photonic integrated circuit (PIC) fabricated through femtosecond laser waveguide writing (FLW) and controlled by thermo-optic phase shifters both in a room-temperature and in a cryogenic setting. By taking advantage of a femtosecond laser microstructuring process, we achieved reliable PIC operation with minimal power consumption and confined temperature gradients in both conditions. This advancement marks the first cryogenically-compatible programmable FLW PIC, paving the way for fully integrated quantum architectures realized on a laser-written photonic chip.

Multiphoton indistinguishability is a central resource for quantum enhancement in sensing and computation. Developing and certifying large scale photonic devices requires reliable and accurate characterization of this resource, preferably using methods that are robust against experimental errors. Here, we propose a set of methods for the characterization of multiphoton indistinguishability, based on measurements of bunching and photon number variance. Our methods are robust in a semi-device independent way, in the sense of being effective even when the interferometers are incorrectly dialled. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach using an advanced photonic platform comprising a quantum-dot single-photon source and a universal fully-programmable integrated photonic processor. Quantum superposition of high-dimensional states enables both computational speed-up and security in cryptographic protocols. However, the exponential complexity of tomographic processes makes certification of these properties a challenging task. In this work, we experimentally certify coherence witnesses tailored for quantum systems of increasing dimension, using pairwise overlap measurements enabled by a six-mode universal photonic processor fabricated with a femtosecond laser writing technology. In particular, we show the effectiveness of the proposed coherence and dimension witnesses for qudits of dimensions up to 5. We also demonstrate advantage in a quantum interrogation task, and show it is fueled by quantum contextuality. Universal photonic processors (UPPs) are fully programmable photonic integrated circuits that are key components in quantum photonics. With this work, we present a novel platform for the realization of low-loss, low-power and high-fidelity UPPs based on femtosecond laser writing (FLW) and compatible with a large wavelength spectrum. In fact, we demonstrate different UPPs, tailored for operation at 785 nm and 1550 nm, providing similar high-level performances. Moreover, we show that standard calibration techniques applied to FLW-UPPs result in Haar random polarization independent photonic transformations implemented with average amplitude fidelity as high as 0.9979 at 785 nm (0.9970 at 1550 nm), with the possibility of increasing the fidelity over 0.9990 thanks to novel optimization algorithms. Besides being the first demonstrations of polarization-transparent UPPs, these devices show the highest level of control and reconfigurability ever reported for a FLW circuit. These qualities will be greatly beneficial to applications in quantum information processing.

Variational quantum metrology represents a powerful tool for optimizing generic estimation strategies, combining the principles of variational optimization with the techniques of quantum metrology. Such optimization procedures result particularly effective for multiparameter estimation problems, where traditional approaches, requiring prior knowledge of the system behavior, often suffer from limitations due to the curse of dimensionality and computational complexity. To overcome these challenges, we develop a variational approach able to efficiently optimize a multiparameter quantum phase sensor operating in a noisy environment. By exploiting the high reconfigurability of an integrated photonic device, we implement a hybrid quantum-classical feedback loop able to enhance the estimation performances, combining classical optimization techniques with quantum circuit evaluations. The latter allows us to compute the system partial derivatives with respect to the variational parameters by applying the parameter-shift rule, and thus reconstruct experimentally the Fisher information matrix. This in turn is adopted as the cost function of a derivative-free classical learning algorithm run to optimize the measurement settings. Our experimental results reveal significant improvements in terms of estimation accuracy and noise robustness, highlighting the potential of the implementation of variational techniques for practical applications in quantum sensing and more generally for quantum information processing with photonic circuits.

Proteins perform much of the work in living organisms, and consequently the development of efficient computational methods for protein representation is essential for advancing large-scale biological research. Most current approaches struggle to efficiently integrate the wealth of information contained in the protein sequence and structure. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for embedding protein graphs in geometric vector spaces, by learning an encoder function that preserves the structural distance between protein graphs. Utilizing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and Large Language Models (LLMs), the proposed framework generates structure- and sequence-aware protein representations. We demonstrate that our embeddings are successful in the task of comparing protein structures, while providing a significant speed-up compared to traditional approaches based on structural alignment. Our framework achieves remarkable results in the task of protein structure classification; in particular, when compared to other work, the proposed method shows an average F1-Score improvement of 26% on out-of-distribution (OOD) samples and of 32% when tested on samples coming from the same distribution as the training data. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have demonstrated remarkable success in learning from graph-structured data. However, they face significant limitations in expressive power, struggling with long-range interactions and lacking a principled approach to modeling higher-order structures and group interactions. Cellular Isomorphism Networks (CINs) recently addressed most of these challenges with a message passing scheme based on cell complexes. Despite their advantages, CINs make use only of boundary and upper messages which do not consider a direct interaction between the rings present in the underlying complex. Accounting for these interactions might be crucial for learning representations of many real-world complex phenomena such as the dynamics of supramolecular assemblies, neural activity within the brain, and gene regulation processes. In this work, we propose CIN++, an enhancement of the topological message passing scheme introduced in CINs. Our message passing scheme accounts for the aforementioned limitations by letting the cells to receive also lower messages within each layer. By providing a more comprehensive representation of higher-order and long-range interactions, our enhanced topological message passing scheme achieves state-of-the-art results on large-scale and long-range chemistry benchmarks., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

Programmability in femtosecond-laser-written integrated circuits is commonly achieved with the implementation of thermal phase shifters. Recent work has shown how such phase shifters display significantly reduced power dissipation and thermal crosstalk with the implementation of thermal isolation structures. However, the aforementioned phase shifter technology is based on a single gold film, which poses severe limitations on integration density and circuit complexity due to intrinsic geometrical constraints. To increase the compactness, we propose two improvements to this technology. Firstly, we fabricated thermal phase shifters with a photolithography process based on two different metal films, namely chromium for microheaters and copper for contact pads and interconnections. Secondly, we developed a novel curved isolation trench design that, along with a state-of-the-art curvature radius, allows for a significant reduction in the optical length of integrated circuits. As a result, curved Cr-Cu phase shifters provide a compact footprint with low parasitic series resistance and no significant increase in power dissipation (~ 38 mW) and thermal crosstalk (~ 20%). These results pave the way toward the fabrication of femtosecond-laser-written photonic circuits with a steep increase in terms of layout complexity.

Mutually entangled multi-photon states are at the heart of all-optical quantum technologies. While impressive progresses have been reported in the generation of such quantum light states using free space apparatus, high-fidelity high-rate on-chip entanglement generation is crucial for future scalability. In this work, we use a bright quantum-dot based single-photon source to demonstrate the high fidelity generation of 4-photon Greenberg-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states with a low-loss reconfigurable glass photonic circuit. We reconstruct the density matrix of the generated states using full quantum-state tomography reaching an experimental fidelity to the target $|{\text{GHZ}_4}\rangle$ of $\mathcal{F}_{\text{GHZ}_4} (86.0\pm0.4)\,\%$, and a purity of $\mathcal{P}_{\text{GHZ}_4}=(76.3\pm0.6)\,\%$. The entanglement of the generated states is certified with a semi device-independent approach through the violation of a Bell-like inequality by more than 39 standard deviations. Finally, we carry out a four-partite quantum secret sharing protocol on-chip where a regulator shares with three interlocutors a sifted key with up to 1978 bits, achieving a qubit-error rate of $10.87\,\%$. These results establish that the quantum-dot technology combined with glass photonic circuitry for entanglement generation on chip offers a viable path for intermediate scale quantum computation and communication.

Estimation of physical quantities is at the core of most scientific research and the use of quantum devices promises to enhance its performances. In real scenarios, it is fundamental to consider that the resources are limited and Bayesian adaptive estimation represents a powerful approach to efficiently allocate, during the estimation process, all the available resources. However, this framework relies on the precise knowledge of the system model, retrieved with a fine calibration that often results computationally and experimentally demanding. Here, we introduce a model-free and deep learning-based approach to efficiently implement realistic Bayesian quantum metrology tasks accomplishing all the relevant challenges, without relying on any a-priori knowledge on the system. To overcome this need, a neural network is trained directly on experimental data to learn the multiparameter Bayesian update. Then, the system is set at its optimal working point through feedbacks provided by a reinforcement learning algorithm trained to reconstruct and enhance experiment heuristics of the investigated quantum sensor. Notably, we prove experimentally the achievement of higher estimation performances than standard methods, demonstrating the strength of the combination of these two black-box algorithms on an integrated photonic circuit. This work represents an important step towards fully artificial intelligence-based quantum metrology.

Relevant metrological scenarios involve the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters. The fundamental ingredient to achieve quantum-enhanced performances is based on the use of appropriately tailored quantum probes. However, reaching the ultimate resolution allowed by physical laws requires non trivial estimation strategies both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. A crucial tool for this purpose is the application of adaptive learning techniques. Indeed, adaptive strategies provide a flexible approach to obtain optimal parameter-independent performances, and optimize convergence to the fundamental bounds with limited amount of resources. Here, we combine on the same platform quantum-enhanced multiparameter estimation attaining the corresponding quantum limit and adaptive techniques. We demonstrate the simultaneous estimation of three optical phases in a programmable integrated photonic circuit, in the limited resource regime. The obtained results show the possibility of successfully combining different fundamental methodologies towards transition to quantum sensors applications.

We report on a universal method to measure the genuine indistinguishability of n-photons - a crucial parameter that determines the accuracy of optical quantum computing. Our approach relies on a low-depth cyclic multiport interferometer with N = 2n modes, leading to a quantum interference fringe whose visibility is a direct measurement of the genuine n-photon indistinguishability. We experimentally demonstrate this technique for a 8-mode integrated interferometer fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and four photons from a quantum dot single-photon source. We measure a four-photon indistinguishability up to 0.81$\pm$0.03. This value decreases as we intentionally alter the photon pairwise indistinguishability. The low-depth and low-loss multiport interferometer design provides an efficient and scalable path to evaluate the genuine indistinguishability of resource states of increasing photon number.

It is fundamental for science and technology to be able to predict chemical reactions and their properties. To achieve such skills, it is important to develop good representations of chemical reactions, or good deep learning architectures that can learn such representations automatically from the data. There is currently no universal and widely adopted method for robustly representing chemical reactions. Most existing methods suffer from one or more drawbacks, such as: (1) lacking universality; (2) lacking robustness; (3) lacking interpretability; or (4) requiring excessive manual pre-processing. Here we exploit graph-based representations of molecular structures to develop and test a hypergraph attention neural network approach to solve at once the reaction representation and property-prediction problems, alleviating the aforementioned drawbacks. We evaluate this hypergraph representation in three experiments using three independent data sets of chemical reactions. In all experiments, the hypergraph-based approach matches or outperforms other representations and their corresponding models of chemical reactions while yielding interpretable multi-level representations.

Boson Sampling is a computational paradigm representing one of the most viable and pursued approaches to demonstrate the regime of quantum advantage. Recent results have demonstrated significant technological leaps in single-photon generation and detection, leading to progressively larger experimental instances of Boson Sampling experiments in different photonic systems. However, a crucial requirement for a fully-fledged platform solving this problem is the capability of implementing large-scale interferometers, that must simultaneously exhibit low losses, high degree of reconfigurability and the realization of arbitrary transformations. In this work, we move a step forward in this direction by demonstrating the adoption of a compact and reconfigurable 3D-integrated platform for photonic Boson Sampling. We perform 3- and 4-photon experiments by using such platform, showing the possibility of programming the circuit to implement a large number of unitary transformations. These results show that such compact and highly-reconfigurable layout can be scaled up to experiments with larger number of photons and modes, and can provide a viable direction for hybrid computing with photonic processors., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

Quantum computer technology harnesses the features of quantum physics for revolutionizing information processing and computing. As such, quantum computers use physical quantum gates that process information unitarily, even though the final computing steps might be measurement-based or non-unitary. The applications of quantum computers cover diverse areas, reaching from well-known quantum algorithms to quantum machine learning and quantum neural networks. The last of these is of particular interest by belonging to the promising field of artificial intelligence. However, quantum neural networks are technologically challenging as the underlying computation requires non-unitary operations for mimicking the behavior of neurons. A landmark development for classical neural networks was the realization of memory-resistors, or "memristors". These are passive circuit elements that keep a memory of their past states in the form of a resistive hysteresis and thus provide access to nonlinear gate operations. The quest for realising a quantum memristor led to a few proposals, all of which face limited technological practicality. Here we introduce and experimentally demonstrate a novel quantum-optical memristor that is based on integrated photonics and acts on single photons. We characterize its memristive behavior and underline the practical potential of our device by numerically simulating instances of quantum reservoir computing, where we predict an advantage in the use of our quantum memristor over classical architectures. Photonic quantum technologies promise a revolution of the world of information processing, from simulation and computing to communication and sensing, thanks to the many advantages of exploiting single photons as quantum information carriers. In this scenario, single-photon detectors play a key role. On the one hand, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are able to provide remarkable performance on a broad spectral range, but their applicability is often limited by the need of cryogenic operating temperatures. On the other hand, single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) overcome the intrinsic limitations of SNSPDs by providing a valid alternative at room temperature or slightly below. In this paper, we review the fundamental principles of the SPAD operation and we provide a thorough discussion of the recent progress made in this field, comparing the performance of these devices with the requirements of the quantum photonics applications. In the end, we conclude with our vision of the future by summarizing prospects and unbeaten paths that can open new perspectives in the field of photonic quantum information processing.

Single-photon detection is an invaluable tool for many applications ranging from basic research to consumer electronics. In this respect, the Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) plays a key role in enabling a broad diffusion of these techniques thanks to its remarkable performance, room-temperature operation, and scalability. In this paper we present a silicon technology that allows the fabrication of SPAD-arrays with an unprecedented combination of low timing jitter (95 ps FWHM) and high detection efficiency at red and near infrared wavelengths (peak of 70% at 650 nm, 45% at 800 nm). We discuss the device structure, the fabrication process, and we present a thorough experimental characterization of the fabricated detectors. We think that these long-awaited results can pave the way to new exciting developments in many fields, ranging from quantum optics to single molecule spectroscopy

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are today acknowledged as an effective solution to fulfill the demanding requirements of many practical applications in both classical and quantum optics. Phase shifters integrated in the photonic circuit offer the possibility to dynamically reconfigure its properties in order to fine tune its operation or to produce adaptive circuits, thus greatly extending the quality and the applicability of these devices. In this paper, we provide a thorough discussion of the main problems that one can encounter when using thermal shifters to reconfigure photonic circuits. We then show how all these issues can be solved by a careful design of the thermal shifters and by choosing the most appropriate way to drive them. Such performance improvement is demonstrated by manufacturing thermal phase shifters in femtosecond laser written PICs (FLW-PICs), and by characterizing their operation in detail. The unprecedented results in terms of power dissipation, miniaturization and stability, enable the scalable implementation of reconfigurable FLW-PICs that can be easily calibrated and exploited in the applications.

Femtosecond laser writing is a powerful technique that allows rapid and cost-effective fabrication of photonic integrated circuits with unique three-dimensional geometries. In particular, the possibility to reconfigure such devices by thermo-optic phase shifters represents a paramount feature, exploited to produce adaptive and programmable circuits. However, the scalability is strongly limited by the flaws of current thermal phase shifters, which require hundreds of milliwatts to operate and exhibit large thermal crosstalk. In this work, thermally-insulating three-dimensional microstructures are exploited to decrease the power needed to induce a 2{\pi} phase shift down to 37 mW and to reduce the crosstalk to a few percent. Further improvement is demonstrated when operating in vacuum, with sub-milliwatt power dissipation and negligible crosstalk. These results pave the way towards the demonstration of complex programmable integrated photonic circuits fabricated by femtosecond laser writing, thus opening exciting perspectives in integrated quantum photonics.
