Doping tin surface epitaxially grown on silicon, Sn/Si(111), with boron atoms yields the appearance of a superconducting (SC) phase below $T_c\sim 4-5$K. Even though the pairing mechanism remains unknown, experimental evidence of chiral $d-$wave superconductivity has been recently reported, then ruling out a phonon-mediated pairing. Here we study theoretically the SC phase and symmetries of the doped Sn/Si(111) within a $t-J$ model. We analyze the photo-excitation of the system by intense THz pulses and show that the polarization dependence of the induced current can distinguish between different symmetries of the SC gap, thus providing a novel experimental mean to investigate the spectroscopic features of the Sn/Si(111) across the SC transition., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures + supplementary information

Twisted bilayer graphene has a rich phase diagram, including superconductivity. Recently, an unexpected discovery has been the observation of superconductivity in non-twisted graphene bilayers and trilayers. In this Perspective, we give an overview of the search for uncommon phases in non-twisted graphene systems. We first contextualize these recent results within earlier work in the field, before examining the new experimental findings. We study the inter-valley scattering induced by the Coulomb repulsion as a purely electronic mechanism for the origin of superconductivity in few layers of graphene. The pairing is strongly favored by the presence of van Hove singularities (VHS's) in the density of states (DOS). We consider three different hetherostructures: twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG) and Bernal bilayer graphene (BBG). We obtain trends and estimates of the superconducting (SC) critical temperature in agreement with the experimental findings, which might identify the inter-valley Coulomb scattering as a universal pairing mechanism in few layers of graphene., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We discuss a Kohn-Luttinger-like mechanism for superconductivity in Bernal bilayer graphene and rhombohedral trilayer graphene. Working within the continuum model description, we find that the screened long-range Coulomb interaction alone gives rise to superconductivity with critical temperatures that agree with experiments. We observe that the order parameter changes sign between valleys, which implies that both materials are valley-singlet, spin-triplet superconductors. Adding Ising spin-orbit coupling leads to a significant enhancement in the critical temperature, also in line with experiment, and the superconducting order parameter shows locking between the spin and valley degrees of freedom., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures and supplementary material. Nonlinear processes involving frequency-mixing of light fields set the basis for ultrafast coherent spectroscopy of collective modes in solids. In certain semimetals and semiconductors, generation of coherent phonon modes can occur by a displacive force on the lattice at the difference-frequency mixing of a laser pulse excitation on the electronic system. Here, as a low-frequency counterpart of this process, we demonstrate that coherent phonon excitations can be induced by the sum-frequency components of an intense terahertz light field, coupled to intraband electronic transitions. This nonlinear process leads to charge-coupled coherent dynamics of Raman-active phonon modes in the strongly correlated metal V$_2$O$_3$. Our results show a new up-conversion pathway for the optical control of Raman-active modes in solids mediated by terahertz-driven electronic excitation., Comment: 15 pages; 11 figures

Recent experiments with strong THz fields in unconventional cuprates superconductors have clearly evidenced an increase of the non-linear optical response below the superconducting critical temperature Tc. As in the case of conventional superconductors, a theoretical estimate of the various effects contributing to the non-linear response is needed in order to interpret the experimental findings. Here we report a detailed quantitative analysis of the non-linear THz optical kernel in cuprates within a realistic model, accounting for the band structure and disorder level appropriate for these systems. We show that the BCS quasiparticle response is the dominant contribution for cuprates, and its polarization dependence accounts very well for the third-harmonic generation measurements. On the other hand, the polarization dependence of the THz Kerr effect is only partly captured by our calculations, suggesting the presence of additional effects when the system is probed using light pulses with different central frequencies., Comment: Paper selected for "From optical to THz control of materials Faraday Discussion" (23 - 25 May 2022, London, United Kingdom). We analyze in detail the superconductivity that arises in an extended Hubbard model describing a multiband system with repulsive interactions. We show that virtual interband processes induce an effective attractive interaction for small momentum transfers, a situation not found in most models of superconductivity from repulsion. This attraction can be traced back, in real space, to the presence of correlated hopping terms induced by interband polarization. We reveal this physics with both strong-coupling expansion and many-body perturbation theory, supplemented by numerical calculations. Finally, we point out interesting similarities with the problem of interacting electrons in twisted bilayer graphene, suggesting the importance of interband contribution to superconductivity.

The effects of the long range electrostatic interaction in twisted bilayer graphene are described using the Hartree-Fock approximation. We study the emergence of superconductivity in rhombohedral trilayer graphene due purely to the long-range Coulomb repulsion. This repulsive-interaction-driven phase in rhombohedral trilayer graphene is significantly different from those found in twisted bilayer and trilayer graphenes. In the latter case, the nontrivial momentum-space geometry of the Bloch wavefunctions leads to an effective attractive electron-electron interaction; this allows for less modulated order parameters and for spin-singlet pairing. In rhombohedral trilayer graphene, we instead find spin-triplet superconductivity with critical temperatures up to 0.15 K. The critical temperatures strongly depend on electron filling and peak where the density of states diverge. We study the symmetries of twisted trilayer graphene's band structure under various extrinsic perturbations, and analyze the role of long-range electron-electron interactions near the first magic angle. The electronic structure is modified by these interactions in a similar way to twisted bilayer graphene. We analyze electron pairing due to long-wavelength charge fluctuations, which are coupled among themselves via the Coulomb interaction and additionally mediated by longitudinal acoustic phonons. We find superconducting phases with either spin singlet/valley triplet or spin triplet/valley singlet symmetry, with critical temperatures of up to a few Kelvin for realistic choices of parameters., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Angle disorder is an intrinsic feature of twisted bilayer graphene and other moir\'e materials. Here, we discuss electron transport in twisted bilayer graphene in the presence of angle disorder. We compute the local density of states and the Landauer-B\"uttiker transmission through an angle disorder barrier of width comparable to the moir\'e period, using a decimation technique based on a real space description. We find that barriers which separate regions where the width of the bands differ by 50% or more lead to a minor suppression of the transmission, and that the transmission is close to one for normal incidence, which is reminiscent of Klein tunneling. The polarizability of twisted bilayer graphene, due to the combined effect of electron-hole pairs, plasmons, and acoustic phonons is analyzed. The screened Coulomb interaction allows for the for- mation of Cooper pairs and superconductivity in a significant range of twist angles and fillings. The tendency toward superconductivity is enhanced by the coupling between longitudinal phonons and electron-hole pairs. Scattering processes involving large momentum transfers, Umklapp processes, play a crucial role in the formation of Cooper pairs. Motivated by recent experiments reporting the suppression of the critical current in superconducting Dayem bridges by the application of strong electrostatic fields, in this work we study the impact on the superconducting gap of charge redistribution in response to an applied electric field in thin crystalline metals. By numerically solving the BCS gap equation and the Poisson equation in a fully self-consistent way, we find that by reducing the pairing strength we observe an increased sensitivity of the gap on the applied field, showing sudden rises and falls that are compatible with surface modifications of the local density of states. The effect is washed out by increasing the pairing strength towards the weak-to-moderate coupling limit or by introduction of a weak smearing in the density of states, showing the evolution from a clean crystal to a weakly disordered metal., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Despite many of the applications of graphene rely on its uneven stiffness and high thermal conductivity, the mechanical properties of graphene, and in general of all 2D materials, are still elusive. The harmonic theory predicts a quadratic dispersion for the flexural acoustic vibrational mode, which leads the unphysical result that long wavelength in-plane acoustic modes decay before vibrating one period, preventing the propagation of sound. The robustness of the quadratic dispersion has been questioned by arguing that the anharmonic phonon-phonon interaction linearizes it. However, this implies a divergent bending rigidity in the long wavelength limit not reproduced experimentally. Here we show that rotational symmetry protects the quadratic flexural dispersion against phonon-phonon interactions and that, consequently, the bending stiffness is non-divergent irrespective of the temperature. Our non-perturbative anharmonic calculations also determine that sound propagation coexists with a quadratic dispersion. We also show that the temperature dependence of the height fluctuations of the membrane, known as ripples, is fully determined by thermal or quantum fluctuations, but without the anharmonic suppression of their amplitude previously assumed. The universality of our conclusions reconcile experimental evidence and theory not just in graphene, but all 2D materials.

The effect of an hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layer close aligned with twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is studied. At sufficiently low angles between twisted bilayer graphene and hBN, $\theta_{hBN} \lesssim 2^\circ$, the graphene electronic structure is strongly disturbed. The width of the low energy peak in the density of states changes from $W \sim 5 - 10$ meV for a decoupled system to $\sim 20 - 30$ meV. Spikes in the density of states due to van Hove singularities are smoothed out. We find that for a realistic combination of the twist angle in the TBG and the twist angle between the hBN and the graphene layer the system can be described using a single moir\'e unit cell., Comment: 7+10 pages; main text + supplementary information

We analyze the phase diagram of twisted graphene bilayers near a magic angle. We consider the effect of the long range Coulomb interaction, treated within the self consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, and we study arbitrary band fillings. We find a rich phase diagram, with different broken symmetry phases, although tehy do not show necessarily a gap at the Fermi energy. There are non trivial effects of the electrostatic potential on the shape and the gaps of the bands in the broken symmetry phases. The occurrence of superconducting and insulating phases is well-established in twisted graphene bilayers, and they have also been reported in other arrangements of graphene layers. We investigate three such arrangements: untwisted AB bilayer graphene on an hBN substrate, two graphene bilayers twisted with respect to each other, and a single ABC stacked graphene trilayer on an hBN substrate. Narrow bands with different topology occur in all cases, producing a high density of states which enhances the role of interactions. We investigate the effect of the long range Coulomb interaction, treated within the self consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. We find that the on-site part of the Fock potential strongly modifies the band structure at charge neutrality. The Hartree part does not significantly modify the shape and width of the bands in the three cases considered here, in contrast to the effect that such a potential has in twisted bilayer graphene., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures. We analyze the spontaneous rippling of graphene membranes as function of the coupling between lattice deformations and electrons. We numerically study a model of an elastic membrane coupled to Dirac fermions. We identify a phase transition from a flat to a rippled configuration of the membrane when increasing the coupling and propose a scaling procedure that allows us to effectively reach arbitrary large system sizes. We find that the critical value of the coupling rapidly decays as the system increases its size, in agreement with the experimental observation of an unavoidable stable rippled state for suspended graphene membranes. Suspended graphene exhibits ripples of size ranging from 50 to 100 {\AA} and height $\sim$10{\AA}, however, their origin remains undetermined. Previous theoretical works have proposed that rippling in graphene might be generated by the coupling between the bending modes and the density of electrons. These studies theoretically proposed that in the thermodynamic limit a membrane of single layer graphene displays a lattice instability for large enough electron-phonon coupling, undergoing a phase transition from a flat phase to a rippled one. Time-resolved spectroscopies using intense THz pulses appear as a promising tool to address collective electronic excitations in condensed matter. In particular recent experiments showed the possibility to selectively excite collective modes emerging across a phase transition, as it is the case for superconducting and charge-density-wave (CDW) systems. One possible signature of these excitations is the emergence of coherent oscillations of the differential probe field in pump-probe protocols. While the analogy with the case of phonon modes suggests that the basic underlying mechanism should be a sum-frequency stimulated Raman process, a general theoretical scheme able to describe the experiments and to define the relevant optical quantity is still lacking. Here we provide this scheme by showing that coherent oscillations as a function of the pump-probe time delay can be linked to the convolution in the frequency domain between the squared pump field and a Raman-like non-linear optical kernel. This approach is applied and discussed in few paradigmatic examples: ordinary phonons in an insulator, and collective charge and Higgs fluctuations across a superconducting and a CDW transition. Our results not only account very well for the existing experimental data in a wide variety of systems, but they also offer an useful perspective to design future experiments in emerging materials., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

The emergence of flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene leads to an enhancement of interaction effects, and thus to insulating and superconducting phases at low temperatures, even though the exact mechanism is still widely debated. The position and splitting of the flat bands is also very sensitive to the residual interactions. Moreover, the low energy bands of twisted graphene bilayers show a rich structure of singularities in the density of states, van Hove singularities, which can enhance further the role of interactions. We study the effect of the long-range interactions on the band structure and the van Hove singularities of the low energy bands of twisted graphene bilayers. Reasonable values of the long-range electrostatic interaction lead to a band dispersion with a significant dependence on the filling. The change of the shape and position of the bands with electronic filling implies that the van Hove singularities remain close to the Fermi energy for a broad range of fillings. This result can be described as an effective pinning of the Fermi energy at the singularity. We analyze the effect of twists on the electronic structure of configurations of infinite stacks of graphene layers. We focus on three different cases: an infinite stack where each layer is rotated with respect to the previous one by a fixed angle, two pieces of semi-infinite graphite rotated with respect to each other, and finally a single layer of graphene rotated with respect to a graphite surface. In all three cases we find a rich structure, with sharp resonances and flat bands for small twist angles. Recent advances in the experimental growth and control of disordered thin films, heterostructures, and interfaces provide a fertile ground for the observation and characterisation of the collective superconducting excitations emerging below $T_c$ after breaking the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. Here we combine THz experiments in a nano-structured granular Al thin film and theoretical calculations to demonstrate the existence of optically-active phase modes, which represent the Goldstone excitations of the broken gauge symmetry. By measuring the complex transmission trough the sample we identify a sizeable and temperature-dependent optical sub-gap absorption, which cannot be ascribed to quasiparticle excitations. A quantitative modelling of this material as a disordered Josephson array of nano-grains allows us to determine, with no free parameters, the structure of the spatial inhomogeneities induced by shell effects. Besides being responsible for the enhancement of the critical temperature with respect to bulk Al, already observed in the past, this spatial inhomogeneity provides a mechanism for the optical visibility of the Goldstone mode. By computing explicitly the optical spectrum of the superconducting phase fluctuations we obtain a good quantitative description of the experimental data. Our results demonstrate that nanograins arrays are a promising setting to study and control the collective superconducting excitations via optical means.

Despite being usually considered two competing phenomena, charge-density-wave and superconductivity coexist in few systems, the most emblematic one being the transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbSe$_2$. This unusual condition is responsible for specific Raman signatures across the two phase transitions in this compound. While the appearance of a soft phonon mode is a well-established fingerprint of the charge-density-wave order, the nature of the sharp sub-gap mode emerging below the superconducting temperature is still under debate. In this work we use the external pressure as a knob to unveil the delicate interplay between the two orders, and consequently the nature of the superconducting mode. Thanks to an advanced extreme-conditions Raman technique we are able to follow the pressure evolution and the simultaneous collapse of the two intertwined charge density wave and superconducting modes. The comparison with microscopic calculations in a model system supports the Higgs-type nature of the superconducting mode and suggests that charge-density-wave and superconductivity in 2H-NbSe$_2$ involve mutual electronic degrees of freedom. These findings fill knowledge gap on the electronic mechanisms at play in transition metal dichalcogenides, a crucial step to fully exploit their properties in few-layers systems optimized for devices applications.
