1. A Precision Determination of the D^0 Mass

Abstract: A precision measurement of the D^0 meson mass has been made using ~281 pb-1 of e+e- annihilation data taken with the CLEO-c detector at the psi(3770) resonance. The exclusive decay D^0 -> (Ks phi) has been used to obtain M(D^0)=1864.847+-0.150(stat)+-0.095(syst) MeV. This corresponds to M(D^0 D^*0)=3871.81+-0.36 MeV, and leads to a well-constrained determination of the binding energy of the proposed (D^0 D^*0) molecule X(3872), E_b=0.6+-0.6 MeV., Comment: 8 pages postscript,also available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS/2006/, Submitted to PRL

2. Measurement of Interfering K^+K^- and K^-K^+ Amplitudes in the Decay D^0 --> K^+K^-pi^0

Abstract: We have studied the Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode D^0 into K^+ K^- pi^0 using a Dalitz plot technique and find the strong phase difference delta_D [defined as delta_(K*^- K^+) - delta_(K*^+ K^-)] = 332 degrees +- 8 degrees +- 11 degrees and relative amplitude r_D [defined as a_(K*^- K^+) / a_(K*^+ K^-)] = 0.52 +- 0.05 +- 0.04. This measurement indicates significant destructive interference between D^0 into K^+ (K^- pi^0)_K*^- and D^0 into K^- (K^+ pi^0)_K*^+ in the Dalitz plot region where these two modes overlap. 3. Experimental Study of chi_b(2P) --> pi pi chi_b(1P)

Abstract: We have searched for the di-pion transition chi_b(2P) -> pi pi chi_b(1P) in the CLEO III sample of Upsilon(3S) decays in the exclusive decay chain: Upsilon(3S) -> gamma chi_b(2P), chi_b(2P) -> pi pi chi_b(1P), chi_b(1P) -> gamma Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(1S) -> lepton pairs. Our studies include both pi+ pi- and pi0 pi0, each analyzed both in fully reconstructed events and in events with one pion undetected. We show that the null hypothesis is not substantiated. Under reasonable assumptions, we find the partial decay width to be Gamma[chi_b(2P) -> pi pi chi_b(1P)] = (0.83 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.19) keV, with the uncertainties being statistical, internal CLEO systematics, and common systematics from outside sources., Comment: 14 pages postscript,also available through thishttp://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS/2005/, Submitted to PRD

4. Limits on Neutral D Mixing in Semileptonic Decays

Abstract: Using 0.8 x 10(6) D+ D- pairs collected with the CLEO-c detector at the psi(3770) resonance, we have searched for flavor-changing neutral current and lepton-number-violating decays of D+ mesons to final states with dielectrons. We find no indication of either, obtaining 90% confidence level upper limits of B(D+ --> pi+ e+ e-) < 7.4 x 10(-6), B(D+ --> pi- e+ d+) < 3.6 x 10(-6), B(D+ --> K+ e+ e-) < 6.2 x 10(-6), and B(D+ --> K- e+ e+) < 4.5 x 10(-6).

Abstract: Using a large sample of D+→K−π+μ+ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of two semileptonic form factor ratios: rv and r2. We find rv=1.504±0.057±0.039 and r2=0.875±0.049±0.064. Our form factor results include the effects of the s-wave interference discussed in Phys. Lett. B 535 (2002) 43.

Abstract: We present a search for a charmed pentaquark decaying strongly to D(*)-p. Finding no evidence for such a state, we set limits on the cross-section times branching ratio relative to D*- and D- under particular assumptions about the production mechanism.

Abstract: A high statistics sample of photoproduced charm particles from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab has been used to measure the D0 and D+ lifetimes. Using about 210000 D0 and 110000 D+ events we obtained the following values: 409.6±1.1 (statistical)±1.5 (systematic) fs for D0 and 1039.4±4.3 (statistical) ±7.0 (systematic) fs for D+.

Abstract: We describe the algorithm used to identify charged tracks in the fixed-target charm-photoproduction experiment FOCUS. We begin by describing the new algorithm and contrast this approach with that used in our preceding experiment - E687. We next illustrate the algorithm's performance using physics signals. Finally, we briefly describe some of the methods used to monitor the quantum efficiency and noise of the Cherenkov cells.

Abstract: An overview of Fermilab experiment FOCUS and of its physics goals will be presented. During the 96-97 fixed target run at Fermilab we collected more than 6.3 billion events with the expectation of in excess of 1 million fully reconstructed charmed particles. Preliminary results on charmed meson decays will be reported.

Abstract: E687 has been a highly successful experiment on charm physics at Fermilab collecting approximately 100,000 fully reconstructed charm events. Still recently, after seven years since last data taking, E687 has produced world class physics results, the latest of which will be summarized in this article.

Abstract: We present measurements of D -> K-S(0)pi and D -> K-L(0)pi branching fractions using 281 pb(-1) of psi(3770) data at the CLEO-c experiment. We find that B(D-0 -> K-S(0)pi(0)) is larger than B(D-0 -> K-L(0)pi(0)), with an asymmetry of R(D-0)=0.108 +/- 0.025 +/- 0.024. For B(D+-> K-S(0)pi(+)) and B(D+-> K-L(0)pi(+)), we observe no measurable difference; the asymmetry is R(D+)=0.022 +/- 0.016 +/- 0.018. The D-0 asymmetry is consistent with the value based on the U-spin prediction A(D-0 -> K-0 pi(0))/A(D-0 ->(K) over bar (0)pi(0))=-tan(2)theta(C), where theta(C) is the Cabibbo angle.

Abstract: By using 1.8 x 10(6) D (D) over bar pairs, we have measured B(D-0 --> pi(-)e(+)nu(e)) = 0.299(11)(9)%, B(D+ --> pi(0)e(+)nu(e)) = 0.373(22)(13)%, B(D-0 --> K(-)e(+)nu(e)) = 3.56(3)(9)%, and B(D+ --> K(0)e(+)nu(e)) = 8.53(13) x (23)% and have studied the q(2) dependence of the form factors. By combining our results with recent lattice calculations, we obtain vertical bar V-cd vertical bar = 0.217(9)(4)(23) and vertical bar V-cs vertical bar = 1.015(10)(11)(106).

Abstract: We present measurements of decay matrix elements for hadronic transitions of the form Υ(nS)→Υ(mS)ππ, where (n,m)=(3,1),(2,1),(3,2). We reconstruct charged and neutral pion modes with the final state Upsilon decaying to either μ^+μ^- or e^+e^-. Dalitz plot distributions for the 12 decay modes are fit individually as well as jointly assuming isospin symmetry, thereby measuring the matrix elements of the decay amplitude. We observe and account for the anomaly previously noted in the dipion invariant mass distribution for the Υ(3S)→Υ(1S)ππ transition and obtain good descriptions of the dynamics of the decay using the most general decay amplitude allowed by partial conservation of the axial-vector current considerations. The fits further indicate that the Υ(2S)→Υ(1S)ππ and Υ(3S)→Υ(2S)ππ transitions also show the presence of terms in the decay amplitude that were previously ignored, although at a relatively suppressed level.

Abstract: Using a sample of 3x10(6) psi(2S) decays collected by the CLEO III and CLEO-c detector configurations, we present results of a study of chi(c0) and chi(c2) decays into eta eta, eta eta('), and eta(')eta(') final states. We find B(chi(c0)->eta eta)=(0.31 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.02)%, B(chi(c0)->eta eta('))< 0.05% at the 90% confidence level, and B(chi(c0)->eta(')eta('))=(0.17 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.01)%. We also present upper limits for the decays of chi(c2) into these final states. These results give information on the decay mechanism of chi(c) states into pseudoscalars.

Abstract: We study semileptonic B decay to the exclusive charmless states pi, rho/omega, eta, and eta(') using the 16 fb(-1) CLEO Upsilon(4S) data sample. We find B(B-0 ->pi(-)l(+)nu) = (1.37 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.11(sys)) x 10(-4) and B(B-0 -> rho(-)l(+)nu) = (2.93 +/- 0.37(stat) +/- 0.37(sys)) x 10(-4) and find evidence for B+ -> eta(')l(+)nu, with B(B+ -> eta(')l(+)nu)=(2.66 +/- 0.80(stat) +/- 0.56(sys)) x 10(-4). From our B -> pi l nu rate for q(2) > 16 GeV2 and lattice QCD, we find vertical bar V-ub vertical bar = (3.6 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.2(syst-0.4thy)(+0.6))x10(-3).

Abstract: Using 5.63 pb(-1) of data accumulated at the psi(2S) resonance with the CLEO III and CLEO-c detectors corresponding to 3.08x10(6) psi(2S) decays, a search is performed for the decay psi(2S)->eta(c)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) to test a theoretical prediction based upon the assumption that the cc pair in the psi(2S) does not annihilate directly into three gluons but rather survives before annihilating. No signal is observed, and a combined upper limit from six eta(c) decay modes is determined to be B(psi(2S)->eta(c)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0))

Abstract: Using CLEO data, we study the production of the antideuteron, (d) over bar, in Upsilon(nS) resonance decays and the nearby continuum. The branching ratios obtained are B-dir(Upsilon(1S)->(d) over barX)=(3.36 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.25)x10(-5), B(Upsilon(1S)->(d) over barX)=(2.86 +/- 0.19 +/- 0.21)x10(-5), and B(Upsilon(2S)->(d) over barX)=(3.37 +/- 0.50 +/- 0.25)x10(-5), where the "dir" superscript indicates that decays produced via reannihilation of the b (b) over bar pair to a gamma(*) are removed from both the signal and the normalizing number of Upsilon(1S) decays in order to isolate direct decays of the Upsilon(1S) to ggg, gg gamma. Upper limits at 90% C.L. are given for B(Upsilon(4S)->(d) over barX)< 1.3x10(-5), and continuum production sigma(e(+)e(-)->(d) over barX)< 0.031 pb. The Upsilon(2S) data is also used to extract a limit on chi(bJ)->(d) over barX. The results indicate enhanced deuteron production in ggg, gg gamma hadronization compared to gamma(*)-> q (q) over bar. Baryon number compensation is also investigated with the large Upsilon(1S)->(d) over barX sample.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the branching fraction of invisible Y(1S) decays, using 1.2 fb(-1) of data collected at the Y(2S) resonance with the CLEO III detector at CESR. After subtracting expected backgrounds from events that pass selection criteria for invisible Y(1S) decay in Y(2S) -> pi(+) pi(-) Y(1S), we deduce a 90% C. L. upper limit of B[Y(1S) -> invisible] < 0.39%.

Abstract: We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the Y(1S) resonance into the final states gamma pi(0)pi(0), gamma eta eta and gamma pi(0)eta, using 1.13 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected at root s=9.46 GeV with the CLEO III detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. In the channel gamma pi(0)pi(0), we measure the branching ratio for the decay mode Y(1S)->gamma f(2)(1270) to be (10.5 +/- 1.6(stat)(-1.8)(+1.9)(syst))x10(-5). We place upper limits on the product branching ratios for the isoscalar resonances f(0)(1500) and f(0)(1710) for the pi(0)pi(0) and eta eta decay channels. We also set an upper limit on the Y(1S) radiative decay into pi(0)eta.

Abstract: We examine e(+)e(-) -> Ds-Ds*+ and Ds*-Ds+ interactions at 4170 MeV using the CLEO-c detector in order to measure the decay constant fD(s)(+). We use the D-s(+) -> l(+)nu channel, where the l(+) designates either a mu(+) or a tau(+), when the tau(+) -> pi(+), when the tau(+) -> pi(+)(v) over bar .Analyzing both modes independently, we determine B(D-s(+) -> mu(+)nu)=(0.594 +/- 0.066 +/- 0.031)%, and B(D-s(+) ->tau(+)nu)=(8.0 +/- 1.3 +/- 0.4)%. We also analyze them simultaneously to find an effective value of Beff(D-s(+) ->mu(+)nu)=(0.638 +/- 0.059 +/- 0.033)% and extract fD(s)(+)=274 +/- 13 +/- 7 MeV. Combining with our previous determination of B(D+ -> mu(+)nu), we also find the ratio fD(s)(+)/fD(+)=1.23 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.04. We compare to current theoretical estimates. Finally, we find B(D-s(+) -> e(+)nu)< 1.3X10(-4) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Knowledge of the B-s decay fraction of the Upsilon(5S) resonance, f(S), is important for B-s meson studies at the Upsilon(5S) energy. Using a data sample collected by the CLEO III detector at CESR consisting of 0.423 fb(-1) on the Upsilon(5S) resonance, 6.34 fb(-1) on the Upsilon(4S) and 2.32 fb(-1) in the continuum below the Upsilon(4S), we measure B(Upsilon(5S)->phi X)=(13.8 +/- 0.7(-1.5)(+2.3))% and B(Upsilon(4S)->phi X)=(7.1 +/- 0.1 +/- 0.6)%; the ratio of the two rates is (1.9 +/- 0.1(-0.2)(+0.3)). This is the first measurement of the phi meson yield from the Upsilon(5S). Using these rates, and a model dependent estimate of B(B-s ->phi X), we determine f(S)=(24.6 +/- 2.9(-5.3)(+11.0))%. We also update our previous independent measurement of f(S) made using the inclusive D-s yields to now be (16.8 +/- 2.6(-3.4)(+6.7))%, due to a better estimate of the number of hadronic events. We also report the total Upsilon(5S) hadronic cross section above continuum to be sigma(e(+)e(-)->Upsilon(5S))=(0.301 +/- 0.002 +/- 0.039) nb. This allows us to extract the fraction of B mesons as (58.9 +/- 10.0 +/- 9.2)%, equal to 1-f(S). Averaging the three methods gives a model dependent result of f(S)=(21(-3)(+6))%.

Abstract: We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays Upsilon(nS) -> gamma+R (n=1, 2, 3), with R a narrow resonant hadronic state decaying into four or more charged particles (plus possible neutrals). Using data collected from the CLEO III detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present upper limits of order 10(-4) for such bottomonium two-body decays as a function of the mass MR recoiling opposite the photon.

Abstract: Using a sample of 3 X 10(6) psi(2S) decays recorded by the CLEO detector, we study three-body decays of the X(c)0, X-c1, and X-c2 produced in radiative decays of the psi(2S). We consider the final states pi(+) pi(-) eta, K+ K- eta pp eta, pi(+) pi(-) eta', K+ K- pi(0), pp pi(0), pi(+) K- K-S(0) and K+ p Lambda , measuring branching fractions or placing upper limits. For X-c1 -> pi(+) pi(-) eta, K+ K- pi(0), and pi(+) K- K-S(0) our observed samples are large enough to indicate the largest contributions to the substructure.

Abstract: We report on a search for the radiative decay of Upsilon(1S) to the pseudoscalar mesons eta and eta(') in (21.2 +/- 0.2)x10(6) Upsilon(1S) decays collected with the CLEO III detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The eta meson was reconstructed in the three modes eta ->gamma gamma, eta ->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), or eta ->pi(0)pi(0)pi(0). The eta(') meson was reconstructed in the mode eta(')->pi(+)pi(-)eta with eta decaying through any of the above three modes, and also eta(')->gamma rho(0), where rho(0)->pi(+)pi(-). Five out of the seven submodes are found to have very low backgrounds. In four of them we find no signal candidates and in one [Upsilon(1S)->gamma eta('), eta(')->pi(+)pi(-)eta, eta ->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)] there are two good signal candidates, which is insufficient evidence to claim a signal. The other two submodes (eta ->gamma gamma and eta(')->gamma rho) are background limited, and show no excess of events in their signal regions. We combine the results from different channels and obtain upper limits at the 90% C.L. which are B(Upsilon(1S)->gamma eta)< 1.0x10(-6) and B(Upsilon(1S)->gamma eta('))< 1.9x10(-6). Our limits are an order of magnitude tighter than the previous ones and below the predictions made by some theoretical models.

Abstract: Using e(+)e(-)-> hadrons data collected with the CLEO-III detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we study the inclusive production of baryons/antibaryons (p,Lambda) and mesons (phi and f(2)(1270)) in gluon-fragmentation and quark-fragmentation processes. We first corroborate previous per-event total particle yields in Upsilon(1S)-> ggg compared with nearby continuum (e(+)e(-)-> q (q) over bar) indicating greater (similar to x2) per-event yields of baryons in 3-gluon fragmentation. We find similar results when we extend that comparison to include the Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) resonances. With higher statistics, we now also probe the momentum dependence of these per-event particle yields. Next, we compare particle production in the photon-tagged process Upsilon(1S)-> gg gamma with that in e(+)e(-)-> q (q) over bar gamma events, to allow comparison of two-parton with three-parton particle-specific fragmentation. For each particle, we determine the "enhancement" ratio, defined as the ratio of particle yields per gluon-fragmentation event compared to quark-fragmentation event. Thus defined, an enhancement of 1.0 implies equal per-event production in gluon and quark fragmentation. In the photon-tagged analysis (Upsilon(1S)-> gg gamma compared to e(+)e(-)-> q (q) over bar gamma), we find almost no enhancement for protons (similar to 1.2 +/- 0.1), but a significant enhancement (similar to 1.9 +/- 0.3) for Lambda's. This small measured proton enhancement rate is supported by a study of baryon production in chi(b2)-> gg -> p+X relative to chi(b1)-> q (q) over barg -> p+X. Overall, per-event baryon production in radiative two-gluon fragmentation is somewhat smaller than that observed in three-gluon decays of the Upsilon(1S). Our results for baryon production are inconsistent with the predictions of the JETSET (7.3) fragmentation model.

Abstract: We present measurements of decay matrix elements for hadronic transitions of the form Upsilon(nS)->Upsilon(mS)pi pi, where (n,m)=(3,1),(2,1),(3,2). We reconstruct charged and neutral pion modes with the final state Upsilon decaying to either mu(+)mu(-) or e(+)e(-). Dalitz plot distributions for the 12 decay modes are fit individually as well as jointly assuming isospin symmetry, thereby measuring the matrix elements of the decay amplitude. We observe and account for the anomaly previously noted in the dipion invariant mass distribution for the Upsilon(3S)->Upsilon(1S)pi pi transition and obtain good descriptions of the dynamics of the decay using the most general decay amplitude allowed by partial conservation of the axial-vector current considerations. The fits further indicate that the Upsilon(2S)->Upsilon(1S)pi pi and Upsilon(3S)->Upsilon(2S)pi pi transitions also show the presence of terms in the decay amplitude that were previously ignored, although at a relatively suppressed level.
