Abstract

Developing content extraction methods for Humanities domains raises a number of challenges, from the abundance of non-standard entity types to their complexity to the scarcity of data. Close collaboration with Humanities scholars is essential to address these challenges. We discuss an annotation schema for Archaeological texts developed in collaboration with domain experts. Its development required a number of iterations to make sure all the most important entity types were included, as well as addressing challenges including a domain-specific handling of temporal expressions, and the existence of many systematic types of ambiguity.

Abstract

The excavation of KHB-1 archaeological site was part of the Joint Hadd Project [Joint Hadd Project is a project operating in the Ja’lān region since 1985, born under the collaboration between ISIAO (Istituto Italiano per l’Africa e l’Oriente, Rome), CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris) and the University of Bologna] carried out in the Ja’lān region, along the coast of the Sultanate of Oman. Different phases of occupation with significant structural evidences were identified within the deposit: an early short-term occupation in the 7th millennium, followed by a longer, extended period of occupation during the 4th millennium by a community of hunter-gatherers, with some evidence of animal husbandry. The material culture recovered from KHB-1, which includes architectural remains, provides new insights on the cultures of this region, highlighting a need for further excavations and analysis. This paper will illustrate the stratigraphic sequence and the main features recovered at KHB-1, followed by a discussion on the two main periods of occupation which will help shed a light on the site function and more broadly provide key insights on mobility, economy, and material culture of Ja’lān in the beginning of 7th and along the 4th millennium B.C.

Abstract

The discovery of remains of daub, especially burned, is very common in Italian pre- and protohistoric sites. This collective work aims to summarize the researches carried out over the last thirty years in Italian contexts of the Late Prehistory, from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. The subjects considered in this paper will be the selection of raw materials and their preparation, the realization of the timber frame or of the the wattle, the putting of the raw earth on the frame and the technical interactions. A number of case studies will be taken into account, in order to draw up a synthesis of the different techniques attested in Italian territory, looking for geographical or chronological constants or variables. The methodological approaches implemented by the various authors will be taken into account.

Abstract

Thermoluminescence is based on the ratio between the accumulated dose and the annual dose rate. It thus acts with the physical meaning of a method of absolute dating, which contains in itself its own calibration. But, because of the high number of parameters, their probabilistic nature, there cannot be single dating. There are only representations that the chronologist has of the true date. That leads us to think of the exact nature of a dating and its place with respect to the true date. So that the dating can be received in a critical way by the archaeologists and be integrated into their own set of knowledge. Il s'agit donc au sens physique d'une méthode de datation absolue, qui contient en elle-même sa propre calibration. Mais, du fait du nombre élevé de paramètres, de leurs natures essentiellement probabilistes, il ne peut y avoir de datation unique. Il n'y a que des représentations que le chronologiste a de la date réelle. Cela nous conduit à réfléchir à la nature exacte d'une datation et sa place vis-à-vis de la date réelle. De manière que les datations puissent être reçues de façon critique par les archéologues et s'intégrer à leurs propres corpus de connaissances.

Abstract

A paleosurface with a concentration of wooden-, bone-, and stone-tools interspersed among an accumulation of fossil bones, largely belonging to the straight-tusked elephant Palaeoloxodon antiquus, was found at the bottom of a pool, fed by hot springs, that was excavated at Poggetti Vecchi, near Grosseto (Tuscany, Italy). The site is radiometrically dated to the late Middle Pleistocene, around 171,000 years BP. Notable is the association of the artifacts with the elephant bones, and in particular the presence of digging sticks made from boxwood (Buxus sp.). Although stone tools show evidence of use mainly on animal tissues, indicating some form of interaction between hominins and animals, the precise use of the sticks is unclear. Here we discuss about the role played by the hominins at the site: paleobiological and taphonomic evidence indicates that the elephants died by a natural cause and were butchered soon after their death. The associated paleontological and archeological evidence from this site provides fresh insights into the behavior of early Neanderthals in Central Italy. Abstract

Excavations for the construction of thermal pools at Poggetti Vecchi (Grosseto, Tuscany, central Italy) exposed a series of wooden tools in an open-air stratified site referable to late Middle Pleistocene. The wooden artifacts were uncovered, together with stone tools and fossil bones, largely belonging to the straight-tusked elephant Paleoloxodon antiquus The site is radiometrically dated to around 171,000 y B.P., and hence correlated with the early marine isotope stage 6 [Benvenuti M, et al. (2017) Quat Res 88:327-344]. The sticks, all fragmentary, are made from boxwood ( Buxus sempervirens ) and were over 1 m long, rounded at one end and pointed at the other. They have been partially charred, possibly to lessen the labor of scraping boxwood, using a technique so far not documented at the time. The wooden artifacts have the size and features of multipurpose tools known as "digging sticks," which are quite commonly used by foragers. This discovery from Poggetti Vecchi provides evidence of the processing and use of wood by early Neanderthals, showing their ability to use fire in tool making from very tough wood., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

37. Evidence of high genetic variation among linguistically diverse populations on a micro-geographic scale: a case study of the Italian Alps.

Abstract

Although essential for the fine-scale reconstruction of genetic structure, only a few micro-geographic studies have been carried out in European populations. This study analyzes mitochondrial variation (651 bp of the hypervariable region plus 17 single-nucleotide polymorphisms) in 393 samples from nine populations from Trentino (Eastern Italian Alps), a small area characterized by a complex geography and high linguistic diversity. A high level of genetic variation, comparable to geographically dispersed European groups, was observed. We found a difference in the intensity of peopling processes between two longitudinal areas, as populations from the west-central part of the region show stronger signatures of expansion, whereas those from the eastern area are closer to the expectations of a stationary demographic state. This may be explained by geomorphological factors and is also supported by archeological data. Finally, our results reveal a striking difference in the way in which the two linguistically isolated populations are genetically related to the neighboring groups. The Ladin speakers were found to be genetically close to the Italian-speaking populations and differentiated from the other Dolomitic Ladins, whereas the German-speaking Cimbri behave as an outlier, showing signatures of founder effects and low growth rate.
