Abstract

Photoemission from atoms is assumed to occur instantly in response to incident radiation and provides the basis for setting the zero of time in docking atomic-scale electron motion. We used attosecond metrology to reveal a delay of 21 [+ or -] 5 attoseconds in the emission of electrons liberated from the 2p orbitats of neon atoms with respect to those released from the 2s orbital by the same 100-electron volt light pulse. Small differences in the timing of photoemission from different quantum states provide a probe for modeling many-electron dynamics. Theoretical models refined with the help of attosecond timing metrology may provide insight into electron correlations and allow the setting of the zero of time in atomic-scale chronoscopy with a precision of a few attoseconds. 10.1126/science.1189401

Abstract

The motion of atoms on interatornic potential energy surfaces is fundamental to the dynamics of liquids and solids. An accelerator-based source of femtosecond x-ray pulses allowed us to follow directly atomic displacements on an optically modified energy landscape, leading eventually to the transition from crystalline solid to disordered liquid. We show that, to first order in time, the dynamics are inertial, and we place constraints on the shape and curvature of the transition-state potential energy surface. Our measurements point toward analogies between this nonequilibrium phase transition and the short-time dynamics intrinsic to equilibrium liquids., In a crystal at room temperature, vibrational excitations, or phonons, only slightly perturb the crystalline order. Time-resolved x-ray diffraction measures the dynamics of antiferromagnetic correlations by reconstructing the reciprocal-space scattering volume for the magnetic Bragg peak. Modifications in the scattering line shape along the three principal reciprocal lattice directions are measured.

Ultrafast angle–resolved XUV photoemission reveals the time- and momentum-dependent electronic structure of 1T–TaS2, a hybrid Mott and charge-density-wave insulator. Both electronic orderings melt well before the lattice responds, suggesting that electronic correlations play a role not just in the Mott localization but in the CDW ordering as well.

Abstract

Two-color, single-shot time-of-flight electron spectroscopy of atomic neon was employed at the Linear Coherent Light Source (LCLS) to measure the laser-assisted Auger decay in the X-ray regime. This X-ray-optical cross correlation technique provides a straightforward, non-invasive and on-line means of determining the duration of femtosecond (> 40 fs) X-ray pulses. In combination with a theoretical model of the process based on the soft-photon approximation, we were able to obtain the LCLS pulse duration and to extract a mean value of the temporal jitter between the optical pulses from a synchronized Ti-Sapphire laser and X-ray pulses from the LCLS. We find that the experimentally determined values are systematically smaller than the length of the electron bunches. Nominal electron pulse durations of 175 and 75 fs yield X-ray pulse shapes of 120 ± 20 fs FWHM and an upper limit of 40 ± 20 fs FWHM, respectively. Simulations of the SASE process using the GENESIS code agree well with the experimental results. Abstract

Linear-accelerator-based sources will revolutionize ultrafast x-ray science due to their unprecedented brightness and short pulse duration. However, time-resolved studies at the resolution of the x-ray pulse duration are hampered by the inability to precisely synchronize an external laser to the accelerator. At the Sub-Picosecond Pulse Source at the Stanford Linear-Accelerator Center we solved this problem by measuring the arrival time of each high energy electron bunch with electro-optic sampling. This measurement indirectly determined the arrival time of each x-ray pulse relative to an external pump laser pulse with a time resolution of better than 60 fs rms.
