- Abstract
Optical fiber gratings have widely proven their applicability in biosensing, especially when they are coupled with antibodies for specific antigen recognition. While this is customarily done with fibers coated by a thin metal film to benefit from plasmonic enhancement, in this paper, we propose to study their intrinsic properties, developing a label-free sensor for the detection of biomarkers in real-time without metal coatings for surface plasmon resonances. We focus on the inner properties of our modal sensor by immobilizing receptors directly on the silica surface, and reporting the sensitivity of bare tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) used at near infrared wavelengths. We test different strategies to build our sensing surface against cytokeratins and show that the most reliable functionalization method is the electrostatic adsorption of antibodies on the fiber, allowing a limit of detection reaching 14 pM by following the guided cladding modes near the cut-off area. These results present the biodetection performance that TFBGs bring through their modal properties for different functionalizations and data processing strategies.

Polymer optical fibers (POFs) have many advantages. Because of their biocompatibility, they can be used as biosensors. In this paper, we report three types of refractometric sensors in poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA POFs. They are based on different technologies, i.e. tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs), TFBGs with a thin gold layer and non-clad POFs. All the three sensors are sensitive to surrounding refractive indices showing great potential for (bio)chemical sensing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) can be excited on metal-coated optical fibres, enabling the accurate monitoring of refractive index changes. Configurations reported so far mainly operate in liquids but not in air because of a mismatch between permittivities of guided light modes and the surrounding medium. Here we demonstrate a plasmonic optical fibre platform that overcomes this limitation. The underpinning of our work is a grating architecture - a gold-coated highly tilted Bragg grating - that excites a spectral comb of narrowband-cladding modes with effective indices near 1.0 and below. Using conventional spectral interrogation, we measure shifts of the SPP-matched resonances in response to static atmospheric pressure changes. A dynamic experiment conducted using a laser lined-up with an SPP-matched resonance demonstrates the abili

- Abstract
Among the different gas detection technologies, optical systems based on optical fibers can be very useful in specific applications like the monitoring of road tunnels or wide spaces. Various techniques exist which are almost all based on the deposition of a sensitive layer reacting with the gases, changing its optical properties (complex refractive index). Two kinds of sensors can be distinguished: extrinsic sensors where the sensing element is not part of the optical fiber (remote spectroscopy of a chemochromic membrane) [1] and intrinsic sensors based on a coating directly deposited on the fiber. In that case, refractive index changes of the sensitive layer induce changes of the transmission of light. A lot of different interrogation technologies were used [2]. Phthalocyanines are good materials for gas sensing [3]. These organic molecules are known to be sensitive to oxidizing or reducing gases at ppm concentrations and have been proposed as the chemically active component of both conductive and optical gas sensors. Another major advantage is their remarkable chemical and thermal stability. Among the different phthalocyanines, Lanthanide bisphthalocyanine (LnPc2) complexes with a “doubledecker” structure attracted a lot of attention because of their electrochromic properties leading to strong optical changes in the visible and NIR range [4-6]. Another advantage is that the gasochromic effect can be observed in the telecom wavelength range [1300-1600 nm], which allows then to use standard and low cost equipment. It is also well known that the coating method has a big impact on the response time and that the gas desorption can be rather slow at room temperature. Heating the substrate is not practical with optical fibers and therefore optical alternatives need to be found. This paper will describe the use of lanthanide bisphthalocyanines for optical gas sensing, in particular for NO2 and the various interrogation and coating methods.

- Abstract
In this paper, we report the manufacturing of high-quality endlessly single-mode doped microstructured poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) optical fibers. Bragg gratings are photo-inscribed in such fibers by means of 400 nm femtosecond laser pulses through a 1060-nm-period uniform phase mask. Preliminary results show a rapid growing process of the reflection band. To preserve a good spectral shape, the photo-inscription process was limited to ~20 seconds, yielding an FBG reflectivity close to 40 %.

- Abstract
Plasmonic optical fiber sensors are continuously developed for (bio)chemical sensing purposes. Recently, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) generation was achieved in gold-coated tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs). These sensors probe the surrounding medium with near-infrared narrowband resonances, which enhances both the penetration depth of the evanescent field in the external medium and the wavelength resolution of the interrogation. They constitute a unique configuration to probe all the fiber cladding modes individually. We use them to analyze the modal distribution of gold-coated telecommunication-grade optical fibers immersed in aqueous solutions. Theoretical investigations with a finite-difference complex mode solver are confirmed by experimental data obtained on TFBGs. We show that the refractometric sensitivity varies with the mode order and that the global SPR envelope shift in response to surrounding refractive index (SRI) changes higher than 1e-2 RIU (refractive index unit) can be ~25% bigger than the local SPR mode shift arising from SRI changes limited to 1e-4 RIU. We bring clear evidence that the optimum gold thickness for SPR generation lies in the range between 50 and 70 nm while a cladding diameter decrease from 125 µm to 80 µm enhances the refractometric sensitivity by ~20%. Finally, we demonstrate that the ultimate refractometric sensitivity of cladding modes is ~550 nm/RIU when they are probed by gold-coated TFBGs.

We report uniform Bragg grating growth in trans-4-stilbenemethanol (TS)-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) optical fibers. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) were inscribed using a 400 nm femtosecond pulsed laser and a 1060-nm-period uniform phase mask. With a mean laser power of 20 mW, the grating reflectivity reaches 98 % in ~60 seconds. Then, with two mean laser powers (15 mW and 20 mW), reflectivity growth dynamics during the inscription process were demonstrated. After that, the stability of the inscribed gratings was investigated as a function of time, which was explained by the scheme of energy levels involved in the trans-cis photoisomerization process. In this paper simulation results of Fabry-Perot mode-locked lasers are presented that are based on measured modal gain data of InGaAsP quantum well optical amplifiers. Gain spectra were measured for various values of injected current density. The gain spectra were fitted to an analytical formula to describe the spectra using a few parameters. These were used as input parameters in a series of simulations of mode-locked lasers. The performance of three-section passively mode-locked lasers (amplifier, saturable absorber and passive waveguide) was studied for various lengths of the absorber and passive waveguide sections as well as various reflectivity values of the resonator mirrors.

In this article, we discuss the results from the irradiation of InP-based Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZ) with a 24GeV/c proton beam at CERN up to various doses. The irradiated samples are characterized and compared against non-irradiated devices. The modulators are investigated for use in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN where two high energetic proton beams collide to study particle physics. The smaller particles generated in these collisions are detected by huge particle detectors with tens of millions of readout channels. The particle detectors communicate to the control room on multiple Gbps links amounting to several Tbps for the whole detector. These data rates are growing as experiments progress to higher beam collision rates. Optical conversion of the electrical data is desired at the innermost parts of the detector, compared to the present scenario where it takes place after a few meters. The detectors operate in a high radiation environment and particles passing through the circuits alter the properties of the circuits giving rise to performance issues. Optical data transmission by external modulation of a continuous wave laser is being explored as a possible solution.

very important aspect of the composite manufacturing process is the appearance of residual strains and stresses during the curing cycle. Composites exhibit large residual strains after curing. Therefore, in this paper, we propose to follow the evolution of the polarization depend loss peaks (amplitude and wavelength) of fibre Bragg gratings during the manufacturing of the composite material to highlight the residual strains appearance

- Abstract
Step-index polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings (POFBGs) and microstructured polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings (mPOFBGs) present several attractive features, especially for sensing purposes. In comparison to FBGs written in silica fibers, they are more sensitive to temperature and pressure because of the larger thermo-optic coefficient and smaller Young's modulus of polymer materials. (M)POFBGs are most often photowritten in poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) materials using a continuous-wave 325 nm HeCd laser. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, we study photoinduced birefringence effects in (m)POFBGs. To achieve this, highly reflective gratings were inscribed with the phase mask technique. They were then monitored in transmission with polarized light. For this, (m)POF sections a few cm in length containing the gratings were glued to angled silica fibers. Polarization dependent loss (PDL) and differential group delay (DGD) were computed from the Jones matrix eigenanalysis using an optical vector analyser. Maximum values exceeding several dB and a few picoseconds were obtained for the PDL and DGD, respectively. The response to lateral force was finally investigated. As it induces birefringence in addition to the photo-induced one, an increase of the PDL and DGD values were noticed. © 2014 Copyright SPIE.

- Abstract
We demonstrate that the experimental strain-optic coefficients for strong guided modes are not consistent with the accepted photoelastic theory. It is shown that for modes with significant nonparaxial components, such as modes guided by strong refractive index differences or in waveguides with dimensions that are much larger than the wavelengths used, the photoelastic theory should be modified to include the effect of the longitudinal components of the electromagnetic fields of the modes. Moreover, we highlight that the strain-optics coefficients depend on the state of polarization of the mode and provide a formula to calculate the necessary corrections.
