- Abstract
The seismic potential of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone is poorly known and highly debated. Only two damaging earthquakes have been reported in the historical period, in 1839 and 1843, but their sources and magnitude are still uncertain. Global Navigation Satellite Systems and coral data contradict each other, and no conclusion has been reached on the coupling ratio of the plate interface. Given the threat posed by the possible occurrence of a large megathrust earthquake, it is crucial to gain information on prehistorical events. We present the results of a submarine paleoseismological study that covers an exceptional ∼120 Kyr‐long period. We studied the sediments sampled in six up to 26 m‐long piston cores collected in deep fore‐arc basins located over the epicentral region of the 1843 earthquake. Using a multiproxy approach combining geophysical, geochemical, and sedimentological analysis, biostratigraphy and radiocarbon dating, we identified, characterized, and dated numerous event deposits that we then correlated with the sampled basins over an up to 160 km‐long area. We show that at least 33 earthquakes likely triggered these sediment remobilizations in the last 120 Kyr. Four of these events promoted exceptional deposits of turbidites + homogenites. From peak ground acceleration calculated for potential earthquakes occurring on various faults, and the absence of deposits linked to the historical earthquakes, we propose that the sources are likely megathrust earthquakes. Over the last 60 Kyr, we inferred at least three 15–25 Kyr‐long seismic cycles in which the recurrence times of earthquakes shortens from ∼5 to ∼2 Kyr.

- Abstract
The interaction of sedimentary systems with oceanographic processes in deep-water environments is not well understood yet, despite its importance for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, and for a full understanding of source-to-sink sediment transport. The aim of this study is to improve the understanding of how contourite moats, elongated depressions formed by bottom currents associated with contourite drifts, develop and of the link between moat-drift system morphology and bottom current dynamics. This study provides a systematic comparison of 185 cross-sections of moat-drift systems distributed at 39 different locations worldwide, and a detailed analysis of the morphology of six moats that cover a wide range of typical geological and hydrodynamic settings. Additionally, in situ measured current data were analysed to better link hydrodynamics to moat morphology. The median of all profiles across all moat-drift systems reveals a 50 m relief, a width of 2.3 km, a relief to width ratio of 0.022, a slope angle of 6°, a drift angle of 3° and a concave-up shaped morphology. Moats can be over 100 km long. Some moats are driven by sediment erosion while others are depositional and primarily exist due to differential sedimentation inside the moat compared to the drift alongside the moat. A new sub-classification of moat-drift systems based on their stratigraphy is proposed. This classification distinguishes moats depending on the degree of erosion versus deposition. No relation is found between latitude and moat-drift morphology or stratigraphy in the analysed examples. The combined data indicate that a steeper slope focuses the current more than a gentle slope, resulting in an increase of the relief-width ratio and drift angle. Thus, this study provides new insides into the interaction of ocean currents with sedimentary morphology, which thereby affects the evolution of a poorly understood deepwater sedimentary system.

- Abstract
Understanding and quantifying the hazards related to earthquake-induced submarine liquefaction and landslides are particularly significant offshore of tropical volcanic-carbonate islands, where carbonate production competes with volcanism to create highly contrasted lithological successions. To improve the detection of liquefaction-prone layers, we analyzed physical properties and mineralogy and performed 70 dynamic triaxial tests on 25 sediment cores offshore of the eastern side of Mayotte (Comoros archipelago in the western Indian Ocean) in an area that has experienced significant seismicity since 2018. We found that the main parameter controlling the liquefaction potential offshore of Mayotte is the presence of low-density layers with high calcite content accumulating along the slope during lowstands. This phasing with sea-level fluctuations implies a significant recurrent geohazard for tropical volcanic-carbonate islands worldwide. Furthermore, the relationship we found between the cyclic resistance of sediment and its density and magnetic susceptibility represents a time-effective approach for identifying the hazards related to earthquake-induced liquefaction.

15. Land-sea linkages on the Algerian Margin over the last 14 kyrs BP: Climate variability at orbital to centennial timescales

- Abstract
Past and present environmental conditions over the Holocene along the Algerian coast involve complex atmosphere-hydrosphere-biosphere interactions and anthropogenic activities on adjacent watersheds. Atlantic Ocean surface waters entering the western Mediterranean Sea at the Gibraltar Strait create the Algerian Current, which flows along the North African coast in a succession of strong and large-scale eddies. Deep-water upwelling plumes are other recurrent hydrological features of the Algerian margin affecting regional environmental features. However, vegetation and paleohydrological changes that have occurred over the Holocene have not yet been described. To bridge this gap, a suite of paleoclimate proxies was analysed in marine core MD04-2801 (2067 m water depth) at a secular-scale resolution over the last 14 kyrs BP. Terrestrial (pollen grains) and marine (dinoflagellate cysts or dinocysts) palynological assemblages, as well as sedimentological (grain-size analysis and XRD-based quantitative analysis of clay minerals) and biomarkers (alkenones and n-alkanes), were determined to explore the links between past sea surface hydrological conditions and regional environmental changes on nearby watersheds.The over-representation of heterotrophic dinocyst taxa (Brigantedinium spp.) indicates strong planktonic productivity in the study area. Results shows that the links between dryness on land and surface hydrological conditions are expressed by: (i) recurrent upwelling cells during the relatively dry climate conditions of the Younger Dryas (12.7 to 11.7 ka BP), the Early Holocene (11.7 to 8.2 ka BP) and from 6 ka BP onwards, (ii) enhanced fluvial discharges between 8.2 and 6 ka BP during the African Humid Period concomitant with the colonization of coastal lands by Mediterranean forest. Middle to Late Holocene transition around 4.2 ka BP characterizes by the intense event reffered to here as the Algerian Mega Drought (4.3 to 3.9 ka BP).

ImportanceDelays in screening programs and the reluctance of patients to seek medical attention because of the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 could be associated with the risk of more advanced colorectal cancers at diagnosis.ObjectiveTo evaluate whether the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was associated with more advanced oncologic stage and change in clinical presentation for patients with colorectal cancer.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis retrospective, multicenter cohort study included all 17 938 adult patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer from March 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021 (pandemic period), and from January 1, 2018, to February 29, 2020 (prepandemic period), in 81 participating centers in Italy, including tertiary centers and community hospitals. Follow-up was 30 days from surgery.ExposuresAny type of surgical procedure for colorectal cancer, including explorative surgery, palliative procedures, and atypical or segmental resections.Main Outcomes and MeasuresThe primary outcome was advanced stage of colorectal cancer at diagnosis. Secondary outcomes were distant metastasis, T4 stage, aggressive biology (defined as cancer with at least 1 of the following characteristics: signet ring cells, mucinous tumor, budding, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and lymphangitis), stenotic lesion, emergency surgery, and palliative surgery. The independent association between the pandemic period and the outcomes was assessed using multivariate random-effects logistic regression, with hospital as the cluster variable.ResultsA total of 17 938 patients (10 007 men [55.8%]; mean [SD] age, 70.6 [12.2] years) underwent surgery for colorectal cancer: 7796 (43.5%) during the pandemic period and 10 142 (56.5%) during the prepandemic period. Logistic regression indicated that the pandemic period was significantly associated with an increased rate of advanced-stage colorectal cancer (odds ratio [OR], 1.07; 95% CI, 1.01-1.13; P = .03), aggressive biology (OR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.15-1.53; P P = .03).Conclusions and RelevanceThis cohort study suggests a significant association between the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the risk of a more advanced oncologic stage at diagnosis among patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer and might indicate a potential reduction of survival for these patients.

International audience; Past and present environmental conditions over the Holocene along the Algerian coast involve complex atmosphere-hydrosphere-biosphere interactions and anthropogenic activities on adjacent watersheds. Atlantic Ocean surface waters entering the western Mediterranean Sea at the Gibraltar Strait create the Algerian Current, which flows along the North African coast in a succession of strong and large-scale eddies. Deep-water upwelling plumes are other recurrent hydrological features of the Algerian margin affecting regional environmental features. However, vegetation and paleohydrological changes that have occurred over the Holocene have not yet been described. To bridge this gap, a suite of paleoclimate proxies was analysed in marine core MD04–2801 (2067 m water depth) at a secular-scale resolution over the last 14 kyrs BP. Terrestrial (pollen grains) and marine (dinoflagellate cysts or dinocysts) palynological assemblages, as well as sedimentological (grain-size analysis and XRD-based quantitative analysis of clay minerals) and biomarkers (alkenones and n-alkanes), were determined to explore the links between past sea surface hydrological conditions and regional environmental changes on nearby watersheds.The over-representation of heterotrophic dinocyst taxa (Brigantedinium spp.) indicates strong planktonic productivity in the study area. Results shows that the links between dryness on land and surface hydrological conditions are expressed by: (i) recurrent upwelling cells during the relatively dry climate conditions of the Younger Dryas (12.7 to 11.7 ka BP), the Early Holocene (11.7 to 8.2 ka BP) and from 6 ka BP onwards, (ii) enhanced fluvial discharges between 8.2 and 6 ka BP during the African Humid Period concomitant with the colonization of coastal lands by Mediterranean forest. Middle to Late Holocene transition around 4.2 ka BP characterizes by the intense event reffered to here as the Algerian Mega Drought (4.3 to 3.9 ka BP)

Three main types of factors commonly control the nature of the clasts, the arrangement of the distinctive lithologies, and the general architecture of turbidite systems: sedimentation rate and carbonate production; climates and glacio-eustatism; and morphology and tectonics. The coexistence of adjacent systems of distinctive nature is, however, scarcely documented, and the relative influence of each factor needs better constrain. In the Northern Lesser Antilles Segment (NLAS), carbonate and siliciclastic sediment sources coexist within a 150 km lateral distance, with carbonate platforms lying onto a volcanic substratum, and by a succession of spurs and triangular valleys that are bounded by active normal faulting. To better understand the factors controlling sedimentary processes from the carbonate platform sources to the deep-sea sinks, we used backscatter, bathymetry, multichannel seismic, and sub-bottom profiles. Sedimentary systems are dominated by siliciclastic input (by retrogressive erosion of confined canyons affecting the volcanic slope), carbonate input (by carbonate sediment transported by oceanic- and wind-driven submarine currents beyond the leeward edges of carbonates platforms), or both. In the mixed systems, the retrogressive erosion of the canyon head determines the nature of the source (volcanic on the slope, carbonate when the canyons reach the shelf edge). Glacio-eustatism has a key role in carbonate availability on the platform, as attested by the presence of drowned platforms. The main contribution of this study is the identification of the major role that tectonic activity plays in the short-distance coexistence of the distinctive sedimentary systems since fault-bounded V-shaped valleys in map view offer alternating leeward and windward edges favoring carbonate or mixed systems. The Romanian sector of the Black Sea deserves attention because the Danube deep-sea fan is one of the largest sediment depositional systems worldwide and is considered the world's most isolated sea, the largest anoxic water body on the planet and a unique energy-rich sea. Due to the high sediment accumulation rate, presence of organic matter and anoxic conditions, the Black sea sediments offshore the Danube delta is rich in gas and thus shows Bottom Simulating Reflectors (BSR). The cartography of the BSR over the last 20 years, exhibits its widespread occurrence, indicative of extensive development of hydrate accumulations and a huge gas hydrate potential. By combining old and new datasets acquired in 2015 during the GHASS expedition, we performed a geomorphological analysis of the continental slope north-east of the Danube canyon compared with the spatial distribution of gas seeps in the water column and the predicted extent of the gas hydrate stability zone. This analysis provides new evidence of the role of geomorphological setting and gas hydrate extent in controlling the location of the observed gas expulsions and gas flares in the water column. Gas flares are today considered an important source of the carbon budget of the oceans and, potentially, of the atmosphere.

34. What factors control the development of moats and their associated contourite drifts?

The interaction of sedimentary systems with oceanographic processes in deep-water environments is still not well understood, despite its importance for improving paleoreconstructions and for understanding source-to-sink sediment transport. The aim of this study is to improve our understanding of sediment deposits formed by the action of bottom currents (contourites), and specifically elongated depressions that are called ‘moats’. Moats are common incisions oriented alongslope formed by the main core of the current and are usually associated with a mounded, elongated sediment deposit (contourite drift) adjacent to one of the moat sides. Based on seismic/sub-bottom profiler and bathymetric data, we analyse the morphology and stratigraphy of moats in different parts of the world ocean. Moats show a large variability in terms of size and shapes. The length can be over 95 km, width (horizontal distance between slope and drift crest) can be over 26 km, relief (vertical distance between drift crest and deepest point of the moat) can be over 480 m and the relief-width ratio can be over 0.1. Even though Coriolis force has a great influence on the general wind and ocean circulation, it seems to have only a small or no influence on the moat morphology. However, over 100 measurements show that the slope angle at which the moat forms influences the drift angle and the relief-width ratio. Higher slope angle leads to high drift angle and relief-width ratio. Possibly steep slopes focus and narrow the main core of the current. The gradient of speed between inside and outside the moat (i.e. on the contourite drift) is higher in a narrow jet. Thus, a narrow jet can lead to higher drift angle and thus a higher relief-width ratio. Three types of stratigraphic stacking pattern can be distinguished based on the location at which the seismic reflections terminate. Seismic reflections from the drift in Type A reflections follow the moat morphology and onlap at the slope side. Going from drift to moat in Type B, the slope angle of the seismic reflections increases and reflections downlap at the bottom of the moat. In Type C seismic reflections are truncated at the drift side and show only a slight dip towards the moat. Within one moat, the stratigraphic type can change. These different types cannot alone be explained by variations in slope angle and thus other factures like current velocity and sediment supply have to be considered.

This study presents novel findings on the Pliocene and Quaternary evolution of the Gela Basin (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea), an area recording the interaction between tectonics, climate change at a Milankovitch and sub-Milankovitch timescales, and dynamic water masses exchange between the eastern and western Mediterranean Sea. The calibration of seismic profiles with exploration boreholes allowed for the refining the chronostratigraphic framework of the Gela Basin and highlighted the main phases of margin growth. Since the Pliocene, the margin has recorded the deposition of 100 m high shelf-edge clinothems, accompanied by sediment drifts on the slope and mass-transport deposits (MTDs), possibly triggered by seismic activity. Through the Plio-Quaternary the locus of deposition of sediment drifts migrated upslope due to a progressive shift of bottom currents. After the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT) the margin experienced an accelerated outbuilding with the deposition of a 700 m thick succession in only 0.8 Myr. At this time, a marked change in sedimentary architecture reflects the growth of shelf-edge clinothems and associated MTDs on the slope, and the spreading of contourite deposits over a broader and generally shallower area. Sediment flux to the basin and the intensity of bottom currents appear both paced at 100 kyr eccentricity orbital cycles. The growth of bottom current deposits on a large portion of the upper slope and outer shelf likely reflects constraints to the bottom current flow by the margin morphology, inherited from Miocene and Pliocene tectonics. Overall, a combination of long-term tectonic activity, climate change and shifts in oceanographic regime resulted in a complex along-strike variability of the margin morphology and stratigraphic architecture and affected where and when MTDs were emplaced. The purpose of this study is to differentiate and characterise contouritic sands in two different locations with variable sediment compositions (siliciclastic and bioclastic) based on a multiproxy approach that includes the analysis of sedimentary texture, semi-quantitative geochemistry, microfacies and ichnological information, as well as a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) applied to geochemical and sedimentary data on sediment cores. The integration of sedimentological analyses and the PCA permits also to the differentiation between fine-grained deep-water deposits such as hemipelagites, muddy contourites and hyperpycnites. A depositional model is proposed here, based on geochemical and sedimentological characteristics of the Holocene-highstand Mozambique Channel upper slope sands, and glacial-lowstand Corsica Contourite Depositional System middle slope sands. The upper continental slope of the Mozambican margin is characterised by siliciclastic sandy contourites, muddy contourites and muddy hyperpycnites. Mozambique siliciclastic sandy contourites constitute large accumulations of well-sorted very fine to coarse sand with evidences of strong winnowing and reworking under high-energy conditions. The sedimentary facies represents highstand contourite sands and shows a reversely-graded trend. The contourite drift on the Pianosa ridge (eastern flank of the Corsica Trough) consists of bioclastic sandy and muddy contourites and hemipelagites. Bioclastic sandy contourites are made up of shallow-marine winnowed bioclasts with a reversely- and normally-graded trend and represent lowstand contourite sands. The PCA in the two environments —showing a distinctive geochemical signal— allows for differentiation of the contourite deposits. In siliciclastic sands, reworking is marked by an accumulation of Si, Zr, and Sr in fine- to medium-grained sands. [1] The Algerian margin has originated from the opening of the Algerian basin about 25-30 Ma ago. The central margin provides evidence for large-scale normal faults of Oligo-Miocene age, whereas transcurrent tectonics characterizes the western margin. A set of NW-SE oriented dextral transform faults was active during basin opening and divided the 600 km long central margin into segments of ~120-150 km. The upper Miocene, Plio-Quaternary, and present-day tectonic setting is, however, compressional and supports the occurrence of a margin inversion, a process still poorly documented worldwide. We show that the central Algerian margin represents a rare example of inverted margin, where the process of subduction inception is particularly well expressed and helps understand how extensional and transtensive structures are involved in margin shortening. Using multibeam bathymetry and multichannel seismic reflection sections from the MARADJA 2003 and 2005 cruises, we evidence PliocenePleistocene shortening with contrasting styles along the margin between west (Khayr A1 Din bank) and east (Boumerdes-Dellys margin) of Algiers. Pre-Miocene structures such as basement highs and transform faults appear to control changes of the deformation pattern along this part of the margin, resulting in different widths, geometries, and relative positions of folds and faults. Plio-Quaternary and active blind thrust faults do not reuse Oligo-Miocene normal and transform faults during inversion, but instead grow within the continental margin (as testified for instance by the 21 May 2003 [M.sub.w] 6.8 Boumerdes-Zemmouri earthquake), at the foot of the continental slope and at the northern sides of basement highs interpreted as stretched continental blocks of the rifted margin. The inherited structures of the margin appear, therefore, to determine this deformation pattern and ultimately the earthquake and tsunami sizes offshore. Recent findings have shown that the connectivity and crosstalk between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) at mitochondria&ndash, ER contact sites (MERCS) are altered in Alzheimer&rsquo, s disease (AD) and in AD-related models. MERCS have been related to the initial steps of autophagosome formation as well as regulation of mitochondrial function. Here, the interplay between MERCS, mitochondria ultrastructure and function and autophagy were evaluated in different AD animal models with increased levels of A&beta, as well as in primary neurons derived from these animals. We start by showing that the levels of Mitofusin 1, Mitofusin 2 and mitochondrial import receptor subunit TOM70 are decreased in post-mortem brain tissue derived from familial AD. We also show that A&beta, increases the juxtaposition between ER and mitochondria both in adult brain of different AD mouse models as well as in primary cultures derived from these animals. In addition, the connectivity between ER and mitochondria are also increased in wild-type neurons exposed to A&beta, This alteration in MERCS affects autophagosome formation, mitochondrial function and ATP formation during starvation. Interestingly, the increment in ER&ndash, mitochondria connectivity occurs simultaneously with an increase in mitochondrial activity and is followed by upregulation of autophagosome formation in a clear chronological sequence of events. In summary, we report that A&beta, can affect cell homeostasis by modulating MERCS and, consequently, altering mitochondrial activity and autophagosome formation. Our data suggests that MERCS is a potential target for drug discovery in AD.

Megabeds are thick sedimentary layers extending over thousands square kilometres in deep sea basins and are thought to result from large slope failures triggered by major external events. Such deposits have been found in at least three areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Although their discovery dates back to the early 1980s, many questions remain, concerning their initiation, source area, extent, and the nature of their emplacement. One of the largest previously documented megabeds was emplaced during the Last Glacial Maximum across the Balearic Abyssal Plain with a thickness of 8-10 m in water depths of up to 2800 m. New 3.5 kHz sub-bottom profiles and sediment cores provide greater constraint on the lateral variability of the megabed and allow to map it beyond previous estimates, with a revised areal extent up to 90,000-100,000 km2. Megabed terminations show gradual pinch-out to the West and an abrupt eastward termination against the Sardinia steep margin. The megabed presents both in seismic profiles and in sediment cores a tripartite subdivision likely corresponding to changes in flow regimes across the basin with a central area of sandy facies and erosional base oriented NNE-SSW allowing renewed discussions about sources and trigger of the megabed.

- Abstract
The Lesser Antilles arc is a mixed siliciclastic and carbonate active margin made of active volcanic and flat plio-quaternary carbonate islands. It was built as a result of a complex tectonic history at the slowly converging boundary between the American plates and the Caribbean plate. The sedimentary processes as a consequence of external forcing (earthquakes, volcanism, hurricanes) were rarely documented in such environment and are poorly understood. We exploited an exceptional dataset of high-resolution marine seafloor data acquired during the last 20 years in the northern part half of the Lesser Antilles forearc to document the sediment-transport processes. We achieved a detailed morpho-sedimentary study from multi-beam bathymetry, backscattering, and seismic profiles. Two areas could be characterized: 1) the “Rough Area”, along Barbuda to Guadeloupe carbonated islands, characterized by steep (up to 25°) slopes incised by short canyons, and deep basins controlled by major normal faults; 2) the “Channelized Area”, south of Guadeloupe and bordered by active volcanic islands and carbonate platforms, characterized by gentle slopes incised by long canyons. During sea-level high-stands, the sediments seem exported from the carbonate platform by hurricanes or density cascading but appear to settle at the shelf-edge and canyon heads. During sea-level low-stands, a connection may exist between onshore and offshore systems. However, this sediment supply appears not sufficient to generate canyon formation, likely shaped by regressive processes. Shelf breaks of the carbonate banks, platforms and submarine slopes are affected by sediment failures. Some may be associated to voluminous remobilizations and large mass transport deposits. Large earthquakes are likely the main processes in this area to remobilize sediments toward the deep forearc basins by triggering both slope failures and flushing of the canyon head.

- Abstract
Evidences of sedimentation affected by oceanic circulation, such as nepheloid layers and contourites are often observed along continental slopes. However, the oceanographic processes controlling sedimentation along continental margins remain poorly understood. Multibeam bathymetry and high‐resolution seismic reflection data revealed a contourite depositional system in the Mozambican upper continental slope composed of a contourite terrace (a surface with a gentle seaward slope dominated by erosion) and a plastered drift (a convex‐shape sedimentary deposit). A continuous alongslope channel and a field of sand dunes (mainly migrating upslope), formed during Holocene, were identified in the contourite terrace at the present seafloor. Seismic reflection data of the water column show internal waves and boluses propagating in the pycnocline near the upper slope. The channel and the dunes are probably the result of the interaction of the observed internal waves with the seafloor under two different conditions. The alongslope channel is located in a zone where intense barotropic tidal currents may arrest internal solitary waves, generating a hydraulic jump and focused erosion. On the other hand, upslope migrating dunes may be formed by bottom currents induced by internal solitary waves of elevation propagating landwards in the pycnocline. These small‐scale sedimentary features generated by internal waves are superimposed on large‐scale contouritic deposits, such as plastered drifts and contourite terraces, which are related to geostrophic currents. These findings provide new insights into the oceanographic processes that control sedimentation along continental margins that will help interpretation of palaeoceanographic conditions from the sedimentary record.

The Gulf of Lions presents recurring mass-transport deposits (MTDs) within the Plio-Quaternary sediments suggesting a long history of mass movements. The two large, surficial MTDs are located on the eastern and western levee of the Rhone canyon over an area exceeding 6000 km2 and volumes exceeding 100 km3. Both MTDs were emplaced 21 ka ago (peak of the Last Glacial Maximum), suggesting a common trigger. Here, we present a multidisciplinary high-resolution geophysical, sedimentological and in-situ geotechnical study of the source and deposit areas of both MTDs to characterise distinct expressions of sediment deformation as well as their spatial and chronological distributions. We show the internal structure of mass movements and resulting MTDs with unprecedented details that were previously represented in the conventional seismic data as transparent and chaotic facies. The combination of multidisciplinary approaches shows new insights into the nature of basal surfaces of the slope failures. In particular, we show that the basal surfaces of the failures consist of clay-rich material contrasting with the overlying turbiditic deposits, suggesting that a strong lithological heterogeneity exists within the strata. We suggest that this change in lithology between clay-rich sediments and turbiditic sequences most likely control the localisation of weak layers and landslide basal surfaces.

- Abstract
Laser reflectometry (BOTDR), commonly used for structural health monitoring (bridges, dams, etc.), for the first time is being tested to study movements of an active fault on the seafloor, 25 km offshore Catania Sicily (an urban area of 1 million people). Under ideal conditions, this technique can measure small strains (10E-6), across very large distances (10 - 200 km) and locate these strains with a spatial resolution of 10 - 50 m. As the first experiment of the European funded FOCUS project (ERC Advanced Grant), in late April 2020 we aimed to connect and deploy a dedicated 6-km long strain cable to the TSS (Test Site South) seafloor observatory in 2100 m water depth operated by INFN-LNS (Italian National Physics Institute). The work plan for the marine expedition FocusX1 onboard the research vessel PourquoiPas? is described here. First, microbathymetric mapping and a video camera survey are performed by the ROV Victor6000. Then, several intermediate junction frames and short connector cables (umbilicals) are connected. A cable-end module and 6-km long fiber-optic strain cable (manufactured by Nexans Norway) is then connected to the new junction box. Next, we use a deep-water cable-laying system with an integrated plow (updated Deep Sea Net design Ifremer, Toulon) to bury the cable 20 cm in the soft sediments in order to increase coupling between the cable and the seafloor. The targeted track for the cable crosses the North Alfeo Fault at three locations. Laser reflectometry measurements began April 2020 and will be calibrated by a three-year deployment of seafloor geodetic instruments (Canopus acoustic beacons manufactured by iXblue) also started April 2020, to quantify relative displacement across the fault. During a future marine expedition, tentatively scheduled for 2021 (FocusX2) a passive seismological experiment is planned to record regional seismicity. The Gulf of Lions (GoL) is a passive margin of about 200 km long and 70 km wide with main sediment supply from the Rhone River supplying Alpine sediments to the Rhone delta. Submarine landslides in the GoL are widespread from the upper slope to the deep basin, within the canyon flanks and in the interfluves of major canyons. The two main submarine landslides present in the GoL are the Eastern Rhône Interfluve Slide (ERIS) and an unnamed slide complex on the western side of the Petit Rhone Canyon. Their resulting mass transport deposits (MTDs), the Rhone Eastern MTD (REMTD) and the Rhone Western MTD (RWMTD) have previously been described in detail in several studies. However, due to the lack of high-resolution multidisciplinary datasets, such as high-resolution seismic, sediment cores, and in-situ geotechnical measurements, a detailed analysis of weak layers and preconditioning factors was never performed. Here, we present a suite of a multidisciplinary dataset; particularly very high-resolution deep-towed multichannel seismic data acquired using Ifremer’s in-house acquisition system SYSIF (SYstème SIsmique de Fond) to assess seafloor instabilities in the GoL. The objectives of this study are twofold and aimed at 1) using deep-towed multichannel seismic data to capture the internal structure of the mass-wasting products previously imaged as seismically transparent or chaotic intervals in conventional seismic data; 2) using multidisciplinary dataset to analyse the basal surfaces of slope failures in the GoL. For the first time, the newly-acquired SYSIF data show in unprecedented detail the internal structure of mass-transport deposit along with small-scale slope failures. We present here an example of a failure that consists of slide blocks, folded and faulted strata with remnant stratigraphy previously associated with a transparent or chaotic facies in the conventional reflection seismic data.
