Objective: The objectives of this study were to compare the body temperatures between pregnant and nonpregnant cats from two sites, lacrimal caruncle temperature (LCT) and rectal temperature (RT), and to compare intraocular pressure (IOP) between pregnant and nonpregnant cats., Animal Studied: This study was performed on 13 pregnant and 16 anoestrous cats., Procedures: The gestation period of the pregnant cats ranged from 20 to 45 days. A vaginal smear was also performed to determine the sexual cycles of nonpregnant cats. The IOP was measured using a rebound tonometer., Results: The pregnant cats (38 ± 0.7°C) exhibited a lower RT than the nonpregnant cats (38.5 ± 0.5°C) (p < 0.05). No significant differences existed between the pregnant and nonpregnant groups in the right (R)-LCT or left (L)-LCT (p > 0.05). The average LCT temperature measured 32.30 ± 2.23°C in cats. The right (R)-IOP in pregnant cats (17.69 ± 5.6 mm Hg) was significantly lower than in nonpregnant cats (22.37 ± 5.27 mm Hg) (p < 0.029). Pregnant cats exhibited a significantly lower left (L)-IOP value (17.69 ± 5.76 mm Hg) compared to nonpregnant cats (23.18 ± 5.55 mm Hg) (p < 0.015)., Conclusion: This study presents a preliminary report that documents a noteworthy reduction in RT in pregnant cats (38 ± 0.7°C) as compared to cats in anoestrus. Pregnancy also has an effect on the IOP. It was hypothesised that the hormonal changes induced by pregnancy in cats would have a substantial impact on IOP and RT. Objective: To characterize the correlation, agreement and concordance of cardiac output (CO) measured with transthoracic ultrasound and the correlation and concordance of aortic blood flow (ABF) minute distance (MD) measured by transesophageal Doppler with CO measured by pulmonary artery thermodilution (PATD) in cats., Study Design: Experimental study., Animals: A group of six healthy male neutered cats, aged 2-8 years and weighing 5.3 ± 0.3 kg., Methods: Cats were anesthetized with isoflurane in oxygen. CO was measured by PATD (CO PATD ) and transthoracic echocardiography (CO ECHO ). ABF MD was measured using an esophageal Doppler flow probe aligned with descending ABF. All measurements were made under three conditions: dexmedetomidine (20 μg kg -1 ) intravenously; atipamezole (200 μg kg -1 ) intramuscularly and atropine (20 μg kg -1 ) intravenously as needed to achieve a minimum heart rate of 140 beats minute -1 ; and dopamine (20 μg kg -1 minute -1 ) intravenously in that order. Correlation between CO PATD and CO ECHO , and CO PATD and Doppler MD was evaluated using repeated measures correlation. Agreement between CO PATD and CO ECHO was evaluated using Bland-Altman method. Differences between consecutive pairs of CO measurements were calculated for concordance analysis., Results: Correlation between CO PATD and CO ECHO and between CO PATD and MD was significant (p < 0.001), with correlation coefficients greater than 0.92. A bias of > 27% and upper limits of agreement of 66% were found between CO PATD and CO ECHO . Concordance rate with CO PATD was 76-80% for CO ECHO and 72% for MD., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Echocardiographic methods for the measurement of CO showed poor agreement and concordance with PATD. MD showed poor concordance with PATD. Objective: To compare the portion of tidal volume (V T ) ventilating dead space volumes in nonbrachycephalic cats and dogs with small body mass receiving volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) with a fixed V T ., Study Design: Prospective, experimental study., Animals: A group of eight healthy adult cats and dogs [ideal body weight (IBW): 3.0 ± 0.5 and 3.8 ± 1.1 kg, respectively]., Methods: Anesthetized cats and dogs received VCV with a 12 mL kg -1 V T (inspiratory pause ≥ 0.5 seconds). Respiratory rate (f R ) was adjusted to maintain normocapnia. Airway dead space (V Daw ) and alveolar tidal volume (V Talv ) were measured by volumetric capnography. Physiological dead space (V Dphys ) and V Dphys /V T ratio were calculated using the Bohr-Enghoff method. Data recorded before surgery were compared by an unpaired t-test or Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05 considered significant)., Results: The IBW (p = 0.07), PaCO 2 (p = 0.40) and expired V T [V T(exp) ] (p = 0.77) did not differ significantly between species. The V Daw (mL kg -1 ) was lower in cats (3.7 ± 0.4) than in dogs (7.7 ± 0.9) (p < 0.0001). The V Talv (mL kg -1 ) was larger in cats (8.3 ± 0.7) than in dogs (4.3 ± 0.7) (p < 0.0001). Cats presented a smaller V Dphys /V T ratio (0.33 ± 0.03) and V Dphys (4.0 ± 0.3 mL kg -1 ) than dogs (V Dphys /V T : 0.60 ± 0.09; V Dphys : 7.2 ± 1.4 mL kg -1 ) (p < 0.0001). The f R and minute ventilation (V T(exp)  × f R ) were lower in cats than in dogs (p = 0.048 and p = 0.038, respectively)., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: A fixed V T results in more effective ventilation in cats than in dogs with small body mass because of species-specific differences in and V Daw and V Dphys . Ovum Pick Up (OPU) is a minimally invasive technique widely used in cattle and mares for oocyte retrieval, involving ultrasound-guided puncture of ovarian follicles. It has been demonstrated that this technique is safe for its repeated use in the same female without affecting her reproductive health, allowing for the retrieval of oocytes in individuals regardless of their reproductive status. The oocytes obtained through OPU can subsequently be used for in vitro embryo production (IVP) using assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) or be cryopreserved in biobanks for their future use. Traditionally, the minimally invasive technique of choice performed in vivo in domestic and wild felines was LOPU (laparoscopic-guided ovum pick up). The present study was designed to explore if ultrasound-guided OPU in the domestic cat is safe and effective. In an initial series of ex vivo experiments (n = 92 ovaries, n = 434 oocytes), the effect of different aspiration pressures for oocyte collection was explored. These experiments identified 43 mmHg as the optimal aspiration pressure, resulting in the highest recovery rate and a favorable maturation and blastocyst rate. Subsequently, 16 grade I and II oocytes were retrieved by OPU and 101 oocytes were retrieved following ovariectomy and slicing. Sixteen oocytes obtained with each technique were subjected to in vitro maturation (IVM) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). A total of 14 presumptive zygotes were selected for in vitro culture (IVC) from each group (OPU and slicing), obtaining a cleavage rate of 57.1 % and 64.2 %, a morula rate of 28.5 % in both groups, and a blastocyst rate of 7.14 % and 14.2 % respectively. The hormonal stimulation protocol was well-tolerated, with no adverse effects observed. Moreover, no complications arose during the ovariectomy performed post-OPU. The use of this technique in domestic cats represents a significant step forward in terms of safety, replicability, and invasiveness, serving as a valuable model for its application in wild felids species. Objectives: Stress associated with manipulation during electrocardiography (ECG) recording in cats potentially limits the assessment of autonomic function through heart rate variability (HRV) in the feline population. This study proposed an alternative, cat friendly, stethoscopic approach to evaluate HRV with an easily acquired vasovagal tonus index (VVTI)., Methods: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate whether VVTI derived from heart sound signals could distinguish between relaxed and stimulated states. A total of 29 cats with 56 recordings of heart sound and ECG on 31 occasions were included. In 25 cats in their home environment, a stethoscope connected to a digital recording device was used to record 2 mins of heart sounds twice - with the cats in a relaxed state and immediately after stimulation. The VVTI was calculated from 20, 60 and 120 consecutive beat-to-beat intervals on the heart sound spectrogram (stethoscopic-VVTI 20, 60 and 120), using the natural logarithm of the variance of the intervals based on previous literature. A 2-min ECG recording was obtained at home with the intention of avoiding strict restraint. To demonstrate the feasibility of the stethoscopic approach in a hospital setting, six cats (two of which were also recorded at home) underwent heart sound and ECG recordings during planned veterinary visits., Results: Stethoscopic-VVTI 20 (5.43 to 4.79, P  = 0.001), 60 (6.20 to 5.18, P <0.001) and 120 (6.24 to 5.60, P  = 0.02) all significantly decreased after stimulation, indicating a reduced vasovagal tone as expected. Calculations of stethoscopic-VVTI from different sections of the recording yielded statistically similar results. Stethoscopic-VVTI showed a negative correlation with the corresponding heart rate. Porcine adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) has been considered valid for the ACTH stimulation test (ACTHST) in humans and dogs; however, its safety and efficacy for use in cats are unknown. Also, the equivalence between 5 µg/kg and 125 µg/cat dose of synthetic corticotropin (1-24 ACTH - cosyntropin/tetracosactide) is assumed for ACTHST in cats. This study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of different porcine recombinant ACTH doses for the ACTHST in healthy cats and its equivalence with tetracosactide. The study was divided into two arms. The first evaluated safety and equivalence of intravenous 1 µg/kg, 5 µg/kg, or 125 µg/cat porcine ACTH in seven healthy cats for the ACTHST evaluating basal and post-ACTH androstenedione, aldosterone, cortisol, and progesterone concentrations. In the second arm, the equivalence of the 125 µg/cat porcine ACTH dose was evaluated compared to results obtained using 125 µg/cat of tetracosactide in ten healthy cats regarding cortisol responses. In all tests, several cat-friendly strategies were adopted, and the ACTHST protocol involved basal and 60-minute post-ACTH blood sampling and intravenous ACTH injection. No adverse reactions were documented, and no tested cat showed any complications during the study. No porcine ACTH tested dose significantly increased androstenedione secretion. In contrast, all tested doses were able to increase progesterone concentration significantly (P < 0.05), and Δ-progesterone in response to 5 µg/kg or 125 µg/cat was considered equivalent (P > 0.99). The 125 µg/cat dose promoted greater responses for both cortisol and aldosterone, characterized by Δ-cortisol (P = 0.009) and Δ-aldosterone (P = 0.004). Despite equivalent Δ-cortisol results in response to 5 µg/kg or 125 µg/cat (P = 0.18); post-ACTH results of cortisol in response to 5 µg/kg only approximate statistical significance when compared with basal (P = 0.07). Porcine ACTH and tetracosactide significantly increased post-ACTH cortisol concentration (P < 0.0001) while the Δ-cortisol was slightly greater in response to the porcine ACTH (P = 0.006). Semen collection in cats in the clinic setting can be difficult. However, semen analysis is vital when evaluating breeding soundness of a male. Electroejaculation (EEJ) is currently the most reliable semen collection method but requires specialized equipment and training of the operator. Chemical ejaculation followed by urethral catheterization (UC) is a technique that allows semen collection without special equipment: a catheter is placed into the urethra of a sedated tom and semen is collected passively into the catheter. Earlier studies used the sedative medetomidine at high doses for this procedure. However, medetomidine has been replaced with dexmedetomidine in some countries. This study sought to compare the results of EEJ and UC for semen collection in the domestic cat using dexmedetomidine, a potent α2-adrenoceptor agonist (α2A), as a substitute for medetomidine at the equivalent dose to that used in earlier studies. Twelve domestic cats were collected thrice at weekly intervals. All cats received intramuscular ketamine (5 mg/kg) and intramuscular dexmedetomidine (30 μg/kg) for initial cleanout via EEJ, then randomly underwent either EEJ or UC one week apart. The EEJ was performed under the same anesthetic protocol as the initial cleanout. The UC was performed using intramuscular dexmedetomidine at a dose of 60 μg/kg. Success of collection, total sperm number, sperm morphology, and motility characteristics were analyzed. Sperm was collected successfully from all 12 cats via EEJ and from 11/12 via UC. There were no significant differences in the percentage of total motile, progressively motile, or morphologically normal sperm between ejaculate types when averaged across all cats or individual cats. Although UC yielded a lower volume and higher concentration ejaculate, it consistently produced a lower total sperm number than ejaculates retrieved via EEJ (17.91 x 10 6 total sperm for UC versus 46.51 x 10 6 total sperm for EEJ). These results indicated that dexmedetomidine is a very effective sedative and performed satisfactorily in both procedures at the doses used in this study. It was also safe with no adverse effects on healthy toms. EEJ remained the most reliable in terms of assessing semen quality and retrieving semen with adequate number of sperm for breeding purposes. Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) serves as an indirect marker for predicting primordial follicles that are representative of ovarian reserve. In this study the possibility of using AMH and age to predict the ovarian reserve in domestic cats. Ovaries and blood were collected from 30 cats undergoing routine ovariohysterectomy. The animals were divided into three age groups: prepubertal (<4 mo, n = 10), adult (1-5 y, n = 10), and senior (>5 y, n = 10). Blood was collected at surgery for serum AMH measurements using the AMH Gen II ELISA kit. The intra-assay coefficient of variation (CV) and inter-assay CV were 3.56 % and 7.68 %, respectively. One side of the ovary was processed to determine AMH localization using immunohistochemistry and for a histological count of follicles, which is the gold standard. The expression of AMH protein was quantified from the contralateral ovary by Western blot analysis. Primordial follicles exhibited the most pronounced inverse relationship with age (rho = -0.779, P < 0.05), followed by a positive association with serum AMH concentration (rho = 0.490, P < 0.05), indicating that both age and AMH are potential markers indicative of primordial follicles. Furthermore, secondary (rho = 0.651, P < 0.05) and small antral follicles (rho = 0.648, P < 0.05) were identified as the major sources of circulating AMH, as indicated by the stronger correlation with serum AMH concentrations compared with primary follicles. However, there was no significant correlation between the expression of AMH protein and other factors, including age, primordial follicles, primary follicles, secondary follicles, small antral follicles, and serum AMH concentration. A model for predicting primordial follicle number using serum AMH concentration (AIC = 672.66, P < 0.05) and age (AIC = 668.93, P < 0.05) was established. In conclusion, both serum AMH concentration and age may serve as comparable markers of ovarian reserve in domestic cats. Semen cryopreservation is a crucial part of assisted reproductive techniques (ART) in animals, and recently it is gaining more and more attention among cat breeders. Even if fresh semen quality is good, sometimes spermatozoa do not survive freezing. The freezability prediction was widely studied in many species, but not in the domestic cat. The aim of this study was to verify the usefulness of osmotic challenge tests and membrane structure markers (Yo-Pro 1 and Merocyanine 540) for the prediction of the quality of post-thawed feline semen. Semen was collected by urethral catheterization from 22 male cats. After a basic evaluation of semen, 20×10 6 spermatozoa were cryopreserved; the rest were evaluated by flow cytometry for membrane integrity (SYBR-14/PI), acrosome status (lectin PNA/PI), mitochondrial potential (JC-1) and membrane stability (Yo-Pro 1/M540 staining). Hypo- and hyperosmotic challenge tests were also performed. The thawed samples were evaluated as fresh ones. The Pearson correlation between all parameters in fresh semen and all parameters in cryopreserved spermatozoa was assessed. Although some moderate correlations were found between the results of the osmotic tests and markers of sperm membrane stability (Yo-Pro 1 and Merocyanine 540) and post-thaw semen quality parameters, the predictive value of studied markers was rather weak - no cut-off values could be established and, based on regression models, they explained less than 40 % of variability in post-thaw quality. The aim was to determine changes in clinical parameters, glucose concentration, cortisol and behavior in colony queens in no music conditions compared with exposing to different genres of music. Mixed breed clinically healthy queens ( N  = 9) were used. Queens were studied under no music conditions (control=CON) and auditory enrichment: Soft Rock (M1), Motown (M2), Pop (M3), Frenchcore (M4) and music that was composed to be species-appropriate for cats (M5). The queens underwent auditory enrichment, including three days of silence (D1-3), five consecutive days of auditory enrichment (D4-8) and three days of silence (D9-11). We recorded clinical parameters, glucose, cortisol and behavior. Data were analyzed with GLIMMIX. Queens showed a significant increase of femoral pulse during exposure to M1, M2 and M4; and respiratory rate during exposure to M1, M2, M3 and M4 compared with CON. There was a significant increase in glucose during exposure to M2 and M5 compared with CON. However, there was a significant decrease in glucose during exposure to M4 compared with CON. There was a significant decrease in cortisol during exposure to M2 and M5 compared with CON. When we evaluated the ethogram, we observed a significant decrease in the percentage of interaction with other cats in M1 and M2 compared with CON. In addition, we found a significant decrease in the purring in M1 and M3 compared with CON. Because global anthropogenic activities cause vast biodiversity loss, human dimensions research is essential to forming management plans applicable to biodiversity conservation outside wilderness areas. Engaging public participation is crucial in this context to achieve social and environmental benefits. However, knowledge gaps remain in understanding how a balance between conservation and public demands can be reached and how complicated sociocultural contexts in the Anthropocene can be incorporated in conservation planning. We examined China's nationwide conflict between free-ranging cats (owned cats that are allowed to go outdoors or homeless cats living outdoors) and wildlife to examine how a consensus between compassion and biodiversity conservation can help in decision-making. We surveyed a random sample of people in China online. Over 9000 questionnaires were completed (44.2% response). In aggregate, respondents reported approximately 29 million free-ranging owned cats and that over 5 million domestic cats per year become feral in mainland China. Respondents who were cat owners, female, and religious were more likely to deny the negative impacts of cats on wildlife and ongoing management strategies and more supportive of stray cat shelters, adoption, and community-based fund raising than nonowners, male, and nonreligious respondents (p < 0.05). Free-ranging cat ownership and abandonment occurred less with owners with more knowledge of biodiversity and invasive species than with respondents with less knowledge of these subjects (p < 0.05). We recommend that cat enthusiasts and wildlife conservationists participate in community-based initiatives, such as campaigns to keep cats indoors. ON and OFF thalamic afferents from the two eyes converge in the primary visual cortex to form binocular receptive fields. The receptive fields need to be diverse to sample our visual world but also similar across eyes to achieve binocular fusion. It is currently unknown how the cortex balances these competing needs between receptive-field diversity and similarity. Our results demonstrate that receptive fields in the cat visual cortex are binocularly matched with exquisite precision for retinotopy, orientation/direction preference, orientation/direction selectivity, response latency, and ON-OFF polarity/structure. Specifically, the average binocular mismatches in retinotopy and ON-OFF structure are tightly restricted to 1/20 and 1/5 of the average receptive-field size but are still large enough to generate all types of binocular disparity tuning. Arterial blood pressure (ABP) is often measured with oscillometry during anaesthesia. Changing the height of the measuring cuff with respect to the level of the heart is known to affect oscillometry accuracy in some species; however, this effect has not been investigated in cats. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of raising and lowering the measuring cuff from standard position (level of the heart) on ABP, measured with PetMAP, in anaesthetised cats. ABP readings were obtained from 29 cats with the cuff at standard position (baseline), and 5 cm above and below the heart. The end-tidal isoflurane concentrations were maintained constant during data acquisition. There were no differences between baseline values and those measured below the heart, while ABP measured above the heart was consistently lower than baseline for both the thoracic and pelvic limbs (P < 0.001), with absolute differences of 8.2 (2.5 - 14) mmHg and 6.5 (3.0 - 15.0) mmHg, respectively. Systolic ABP readings at the pelvic limb were consistently higher than those at the thoracic limb at standard position (112 ± 26 versus 103 ± 21 mmHg, p = 0.010), above (106 ± 22 versus 95 ± 20 mmHg, p = 0.003), and below the heart (116 ± 26 versus 107 ± 22 mmHg, p = 0.011). Background: Rectal temperature (RT) is an important index of core temperature, which has guiding significance for the diagnosis and treatment of pet diseases., Objectives: Development and evaluation of an alternative method based on machine learning to determine the core temperatures of cats and dogs using surface temperatures., Animals: 200 cats and 200 dogs treated between March 2022 and May 2022., Methods: A group of cats and dogs were included in this study. The core temperatures and surface body temperatures were measured. Multiple machine learning methods were trained using a cross-validation approach and evaluated in one retrospective testing set and one prospective testing set., Results: The machine learning models could achieve promising performance in predicting the core temperatures of cats and dogs using surface temperatures. The root mean square errors (RMSE) were 0.25 and 0.15 for cats and dogs in the retrospective testing set, and 0.15 and 0.14 in the prospective testing set., Conclusion: The machine learning model could accurately predict core temperatures for companion animals of cats and dogs using easily obtained body surface temperatures., (© 2024. Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the volume, the concentration of steroid hormones, and biochemical composition of the foetal fluids at different gestational ages in dogs and cats., Methods: Following the ovariohysterectomy, the allantoic and amniotic fluid samples were collected from pregnant bitches and queens and were assigned to different groups according to their gestational age., Results: The canine and feline allantoic fluid volume increased during pregnancy, reached its maximum values on days 40-49 and then decreased. The canine and feline amniotic fluid volume increased steadily by the last days of pregnancy. In spite of significant changes of sex hormones in the foetal fluids, their concentration and ratios were not significantly different between male and female fetuses. The canine amniotic cortisol concentration increased until days 40-49 and decreased significantly afterwards. The maximum cortisol concentrations in the feline allantoic and amniotic fluids were observed on days 50-60 and 40-49, respectively. During the canine pregnancy, the concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, chloride, sodium, triglyceride, cholesterol, total protein, albumin and the activities of aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), amylase and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) in the amniotic fluid were higher than the allantoic fluid. The magnesium, potassium, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, creatine and lipase were higher in the allantoic fluid. In the feline allantoic fluid, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, creatinine, albumin and glucose concentrations and the activities of creatine kinase (CK), GGT, LDH and lipase were higher. The ALP, AST activities, sodium and calcium concentrations were higher in the amniotic fluid (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Volume of foetal fluids was determined in dogs and cats. Objective: To compare the stiffness and strength of three plate and rod fixation constructs applied to a feline tibial gap model., Study Design: Ex vivo study., Sample Population: Thirty-three unpaired tibiae obtained from skeletally mature cats., Methods: The tibiae were randomly divided into three groups. The following implants were then applied to the feline tibiae prior to the creation of a 10 mm diaphyseal gap. Group 1: 2.4 mm locking compression plate (LCP) and 1.0 mm intramedullary pin (IMP). Group 2: 2.4 mm LCP and 1.6 mm IMP. Group 3: 2.7 mm LCP. Subsequently, each specimen was tested for torsion, axial compression, and axial load until construct failure. Student's t-tests were used to compare the torsional and axial stiffness, yield load, and maximum axial force., Results: Group 2 had higher axial stiffness than group 3 (p = .013). Group 1 showed a lower maximum axial force and yield point than groups 2 and 3 (p < .01; p < .05, respectively). There were no among-group differences in torsional stiffness., Conclusion: Constructs with a 2.4 mm LCP and 1.6 mm IMP provided the strongest and most rigid constructs in a feline tibia gap model., Clinical Significance: A plate-rod construct combining a 2.4 mm LCP and a 1.6 mm IMP is appropriate for achieving high implant stiffness and resisting maximum axial force in treatment of tibial fractures in cats., (© 2023 The Authors. Objective: To evaluate the kinematics and stability of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of cats and dogs with and without a TMJ replacement (TMJR) prosthesis under simulated bite forces and mouth opening., Animals: Sixteen cadaver skulls from domestic cats (n = 8) and medium- to large-breed dogs (n = 8)., Methods: Intact TMJs were tested. Following condylectomy and coronoidectomy, the skulls were fitted with a TMJR prosthesis unilaterally and retested. Prosthesis was similarly implanted in the contralateral TMJ in 4 cats and 4 dogs before retesting. Left and right bite motions were evaluated before bite contact to peak bite force (200 N in dogs, 63 N in cats). Mouth opening motion was recorded. Mandibular displacement under load was evaluated in 3 orthogonal planes. Maximal displacement was compared between TMJR groups and native TMJ. Prosthesis-bone motion of the temporal and mandibular components was evaluated during simulated bites and mouth opening., Results: TMJR resulted in joint motion not demonstrably different from the native TMJ, with the ability to fully open and close the mouth and with minimal laterotrusion. The TMJR prosthesis demonstrated similar stability after unilateral and bilateral replacement during bite force and with an open mouth. Mean implant-bone motion during bite simulations for the temporal and mandibular TMJR components was ≤ 60 µm in cats and ≤ 30 µm in dogs., Clinical Relevance: A novel TMJR can be implanted and allows normal jaw motion. Joint stability is maintained after TMJR implantation in the TMJ of dogs and cats TMJ that is devoid of muscular support.

Background: Healthy vision in humans and animals requires a stable tear film. The environmental factor could affect the status of the tear film. Therefore, assessing the tear film in animals is essential to avoid visual system disturbance., Aim: The current research used a noninvasive device to evaluate the tear meniscus height (TMH) and lipid layer pattern (LLP) in domestic cats. In addition, the scores were compared with those of humans with healthy eyes., Methods: Fifty-four domestic cats (28 males and 26 females; mean ± SD = 13.9 ± 18.2 months) were randomly selected and included in the study. The cats were healthy, without any ocular disorders or diseases. Fifty-four healthy eye subjects (27 males and 27 females; mean ± SD = 25.6 ± 5.1 years) were randomly recruited and took part in the study for comparison. EASYTEAR View+ was used, for the first time, to assess the tear film parameters on the right eye of each subject. The examiner allowed a 5-minute gap between the tests. Each test was performed by the same examiner three times, followed by calculating the mean scores., Results: Significant differences (Mann-Whitney U test) were found in the median scores of LLP ( p = 0.009) between cats and subjects with healthy eyes. The median TMH score was higher in cats (0.18 mm) than in humans (0.14). However, no significant difference (Mann-Whitney U Test, p = 0.210) exists in the TMH scores between cats and humans. The LLP analysis indicated that a dense white-blue lipid layer (grade 4 or D; lipid layer thickness, LLT, = approximately 80 nm) was predominant in both cats ( N = 24, 44.4%) and humans ( N = 29, 53.7%). In comparison, variable colors lipid layer (grade 5 or E; LLT = 90-140 nm) was a minority in cats ( N = 5, 9.3%) and common in humans ( N = 16, 29.6%). The statistical analysis indicated medium correlations between cats' TMH and LLP scores ( r = 0.431, p < 0.01) and between age and TMH scores in humans ( r = 0.440, p < 0.01). In addition, it indicated a weak correlation ( r = 0.291, p < 0.05) between the LLP scores in cats and humans., Conclusion: Assessing animals' tear film is essential to avoid any ocular disorders. EASYTEAR View+ is efficiently used to evaluate domestic cats' TMH and LLP. Hydrolysed proteins have been shown to be potential ingredients in cat diets due to their high digestibility, presence of bioactive peptides, and relatively low antigenicity. The effects of the substitution of conventional low ash poultry byproduct meal (PBM) with hydrolysed poultry byproduct meal (HPM) as a protein source were evaluated in extruded cat diets. Five diets with similar nutrient contents were formulated: a control (CO) diet based on PBM and 4 diets with different inclusions of HPM (5%, 10%, 20%, and 30%, on an as-fed basis) replacing PBM as the protein source. The total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of nutrients, faecal characteristics and microbial fermentation products, urine production and pH, nitrogen balance and urea renal excretion were evaluated using 30 healthy cats (15 males and 15 females; 4.18 ± 0.86 kg; 4.17 ± 1.38 years old), with 6 cats per diet in a complete randomised block design. When significant differences were found with the F test, the effects were evaluated by polynomial contrasts according to HPM inclusion ( p  < 0.05). The CTTADs of DM (89 ± 0.41%), CP (90 ± 0.36%), fat (93 ± 0.41%) and gross energy (90 ± 0.33%) were similar among treatments ( p  > 0.05). The faecal production, score, short-chain fatty acids and ammonia concentration were similar among treatments ( p  > 0.05). Isobutyric, isovaleric, valeric, and total branched-chain fatty acid contents increased quadratically ( p  < 0.05), with the highest level in the faeces of cats fed the diet with 20% HPM. Lactate concentration in faeces increased linearly with the inclusion of HPM ( p  < 0.05). Urine characteristics and urea renal excretion did not differ among treatments ( p  > 0.05). At 10% inclusion, HPM tended to increase the nitrogen retention of cats ( p  = 0.083), which may reflect the higher tryptophan, methionine, lysine, and available lysine contents of HPM in comparison to PBM. The inclusion of up to 30% HPM can be considered in cat formulations without affecting nutrient digestibility or faecal and urine characteristics. HPM tended to increase nitrogen retention and increased branched-chain fatty acids in faeces, aspects which deserves further studies.

Duckweed has attracted increasing attention as a high-quality and sustainable novel plant-based protein source. However, little research has been conducted in dogs and cats. We evaluated the effects of inclusion of duckweed protein (Lemna; MCSelect; Parabel; Vero Beach, FL) primarily in replacement of pea protein in dog diets at 0%, 5%, and 10% and cat diets at %, 10%, and 15% on stool quality, nutrient digestibility, and palatability. We hypothesized that duckweed protein would be a viable protein source in both dog and cat diets by showing no detriment to nutritional outcomes. All feeding tests were conducted at an independent research facility (Susquehanna, PA). A standard 2-bowl palatability test over a 2-d period was conducted with adult animals (n = 30 each) to determine intake ratio between test diets (duckweed-containing diets) and control diets (0% duckweed protein). Apparent total tract nutrient digestibility was conducted with 18 adult dogs and 21 adult cats (n = 6 to 7 per diet) with 5 d of diet acclimation followed by 5 d of total fecal collection. Stool quality was evaluated on a 1 to 5 scale where 1 = non-formed or diarrhea and 5 = hard, formed. Palatability data were analyzed using paired t-test (daily consumption) and chi-square test (first choice). All other data were analyzed by ANOVA and contrast (SAS version 9.4). For cats, 10% duckweed had greater (P < 0.05) palatability than control, while no difference was observed between 15% duckweed protein and control. For dogs, 5% and 10% duckweed protein had (P < 0.05) lower palatability, demonstrating a preference to control. Both cats and dogs fed duckweed diets had acceptable stool quality (Mean = 3.4 and 3.3, respectively). No detriments in nutrient digestibility were observed in dogs fed 5% and 10% duckweed protein; however, cats fed 10% and 15% duckweed protein had (P < 0.05) lower dry matter, protein, and energy digestibility vs. control. In conclusion, the data collected indicate that duckweed can be a viable replacement for other plant-based proteins in dog diets at inclusion levels up to 10%; more development is needed for duckweed protein inclusion into cat diets., (© The Author(s) 2024. For over six decades, nutritional science has provided well-developed, peer-reviewed nutrient recommendations to support the health of dogs and cats. These guidelines are updated based on new scientifically valid research and appropriate peer-review. Recent regulatory and scientific positions around health issues have resulted in strong opinions and desires for rapid regulatory action surrounding mineral nutrition, but with limited and conflicting scientific evidence. Pet Food Institute nutrition experts have come together to jointly author an article on the complexities of establishing mineral tolerances of dogs and cats to illustrate the limitations in defining mineral tolerances. This discussion covers how mineral requirements were determined, including the opportunities and pitfalls encountered. Scientific councils must review and clarify any proposed changes in conducting mineral nutrition research that might impact complete and balanced foods and surrounding regulations. It is important to clarify the multiple issues in mineral nutrition research and the necessity for thorough evaluation of data while avoiding arbitrary and potentially harmful guidelines., (© The Author(s) 2024. Practical Relevance: Understanding the normal reproductive anatomy and physiology of the male cat is important for successful breeding. Veterinarians may be called in to troubleshoot when fertility and pregnancy rates decrease in a cattery. By understanding the normal physical parameters, as well as breeding behavior, the veterinarian is better equipped to assess the infertility issue. Also, clients are increasingly requesting breeding soundness examinations prior to mating or purchase. Semen collection is more difficult in the cat than in the dog but can still be accomplished in a clinical setting and provides important information when confronted with breeding males., Aim: The aim of this review is to provide a practical overview of the breeding male. The reader will receive information on time of puberty, normal reproductive anatomy (both external and internal), and breeding management practices to optimize fertility. The most up-to-date semen collection techniques are discussed, as are sedation/anesthesia options. Also, historical literature on the basic anatomy of the male reproductive system is reviewed, such as how the penile spines work and when they appear; this information is specific to the cat., Evidence Base: The information in this article is based on the author's experience, as well as drawing on historical and current literature, and provides the most up-to-date review as possible.

Growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF-9), an oocyte-derived member of the TGF-β superfamily, plays an essential role in regulation of follicular development. This study aimed to determine the cyclic changes in serum GDF-9 concentration, compare its levels before and after ovariohysterectomy (OHE), and investigate its potential as a tool in ovarian remnant syndrome (ORS) diagnosis in cats. GDF-9 measurements were performed on 50 cats referred for routine OHE. The stage of the estrous cycle was determined by vaginal cytology and measurement of serum estradiol and progesterone levels was carried out to detect the cyclic changes in circulating GDF-9. One week after OHE, serum samples were collected again from 30 cats to reveal differences in GDF-9 levels. GDF-9 levels in the follicular phase were significantly higher than those in the interestrus (p⟨0.05). The postoperative analysis could be performed. GDF-9 levels slightly decreased one week after OHE (p=0.053). In conclusion, blood GDF-9 levels change during the estrous cycle, and may decrease with age in cats. Practical Relevance: Despite considerable interest in the field of companion animal reproduction, feline neonatology remains largely unstudied. This contrasts with the need for a more professional veterinary approach to newborn kittens and feline husbandry, across the pet, breeding cattery and rescue shelter settings, to reduce kitten mortality., Global Importance: Feline neonatology has relevance for veterinarians around the world as cats are continuing to become established as popular companion animals., Clinical Challenges: Perinatal mortality in cats is remarkably high. Therefore, adequate neonatal evaluation and assistance at birth, careful monitoring of kittens in the vulnerable period until weaning begins, assessment of maternal factors and well-informed management of orphans are crucial in helping to reduce kitten losses., Aim: This review aims to deepen the basic knowledge of the veterinary clinical team regarding the characteristics of feline newborns under normal conditions at birth through to the commencement of weaning. Much of the information is also relevant to breeders and rescue/shelter caregivers., Evidence Base: In compiling the present review, the authors have drawn on specific feline research data, where available, complemented by data extrapolated from scientific publications on newborn dogs, and also their own and their colleagues' professional clinical experience.

Key biomolecular processes, which regulate primordial ovarian follicle dormancy and early folliculogenesis in mammalian ovaries, are not fully understood. The domestic cat is a useful model to study ovarian folliculogenesis and is the most relevant for developing in vitro growth methods to be implemented in wild felid conservation breeding programs. Previously, RNA-sequencing of primordial (PrF), primary (PF), and secondary follicle (SF) samples from domestic cat implicated ovarian steroidogenesis and steroid reception during follicle development. Here, we aimed to identify which sex steroid biosynthesis and metabolism enzymes, gonadotropin receptors, and sex steroid receptors are present and may be potential regulators. Differential gene expression, functional annotation, and enrichment analyses were employed and protein localization was studied too. Gene transcripts for PGR, PGRMC1, AR (steroid receptors), CYP11A1, CYP17A1, HSD17B1 and HSD17B17 (steroidogenic enzymes), and STS (steroid metabolizing enzyme) were significantly differentially expressed (Q values of ≤0.05). Differential gene expression increased in all transcripts during follicle transitions apart from AR which decreased by the secondary stage. Immunohistochemistry localized FSHR and LHCGR to oocytes at each stage. PGRMC1 immunostaining was strongest in granulosa cells, whereas AR was strongest in oocytes throughout each stage. Protein signals for steroidogenic enzymes were only detectable in SFs. Products of these significantly differentially expressed genes may regulate domestic cat preantral folliculogenesis. In vitro growth could be optimized as all early follicles express gonadotropin and steroid receptors meaning hormone interaction and response may be possible. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of increasing dosages of a commercial product composed by Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast (YAM), with active metabolites, which are beta glucans, nucleotides, organic acids, polyphenols, amino acids, vitamins and minerals (Original XPC tm , Diamond V, IOWA, USA) added to a commercially available dry cat food. Apparent digestibility of dietary nutrients, fecal microbiota, fecal fermentation products and immunological parameters were evaluated. Twenty-seven healthy cats of mixed sexes, with a mean body weight of 4.19 ± 0.83 kg and a mean age of 9.44 ± 5.35 years were distributed by age in an unbalanced randomized block design, consisting of three experimental treatments: CD (control diet), YAM 0.3 (control diet with 0.3% yeast with active metabolites) and YAM 0.6 (control diet with 0.6% yeast with active metabolites)., Results: The inclusion of the additive elevated the apparent digestibility of crude fiber (p = 0.013) and ash (p < 0.001) without interfering feed consumption, fecal production and fecal characteristics. Regarding fermentation products present in the feces, prebiotic inclusion increased lactic acid concentration (p = 0.004) while reducing isovaleric acid (p = 0.014), only in the treatment YAM 0.3. No differences were noticed on biogenic amines (BA), fecal pH, ammonia concentration, total and individuals short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and total and individuals branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA) (except isovaleric acid in YAM 0.3). As regards to fecal microbiota, prebiotic inclusion has resulted in the reduction of Clostridium perfringens (p = 0.023). No differences were found in the immunological parameters evaluated., Conclusion: It can be concluded that the additive, at the levels of inclusion assessed shows prebiotic potential and it has effects on fecal fermentation products and microbiota without interfering on crude protein and dry matter digestibility. Age is an important ecological tool in wildlife conservation. However, it is difficult to estimate in most animals, including felines-most of whom are endangered. Here, we developed the first DNA methylation-based age-estimation technique-as an alternative to current age-estimation methods-for two feline species that share a relatively long genetic distance with each other: domestic cat (Felis catus; 79 blood samples) and an endangered Panthera, the snow leopard (Panthera uncia; 11 blood samples). We measured the methylation rates of two gene regions using methylation-sensitive high-resolution melting (MS-HRM). Domestic cat age was estimated with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) of 3.83 years. Health conditions influenced accuracy of the model. Specifically, the models built on cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) had lower accuracy than those built on healthy cats. The snow leopard-specific model (i.e. the model that resets the model settings for snow leopards) had a better accuracy (MAD = 2.10 years) than that obtained on using the domestic cat model directly. This implies that our markers could be utilised across species, although changing the model settings when targeting different species could lead to better estimation accuracy. This article is an attempt to gather available literature regarding the use of tiletamine and zolazepam combination in anaesthesia in dogs and cats. Although tiletamine and zolazepam mixture has been known in veterinary practice for a long time, the increased interest in these drugs has been observed only recently. Tiletamine, similarly to ketamine, is a drug which belongs to the phencyclidine group. Ketamine has considerable popularity in veterinary practice what suggests that other dissociative anaesthetic drugs, such as tiletamine, could also prove effective in cats' and dogs' anaesthetic care. Zolazepam is a widely used benzodiazepine known for its muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant properties. While conducting an electronic search for articles regarding the use of tiletamine-zolazepam combination in dogs and cats, it has been discovered that the literature on the subject (tiletamine-zolazepam combination in dogs and cats) is quite scarce. Very few articles were published after 2010. Databases used were: Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed. Most of the adverse effects, including those affecting the cardiovascular, nervous, and respiratory systems, were strictly dose-dependent. Tiletamine-zolazepam combination can be safely used as a premedication agent, induction for inhalation anaesthesia, or an independent anaesthetic for short procedures. Contraindications using tiletamine-zolazepam mixture include central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as epilepsy and seizures, head trauma, penetrative eye trauma, cardiovascular abnormalities (hypertrophy cardiomyopathy in cats, arrythmias or conditions where increase of heart rate is inadvisable), hyperthyroidism, pancreatic deficiencies or kidney failure., (Copyright© by the Polish Academy of Sciences.)

The Kisspeptin/Kiss1r system is a key regulator of reproduction by stimulating gonadotrophin-releasing hormone and luteinizing hormone release, and in vitro studies have shown that Kisspeptin can modulate angiogenesis and immune function, factors that are also essential for reproduction However, there are no studies on the expression of Kisspeptin/Kiss1r at the maternal-fetal interface in domestic cats and its relationship with angiogenic and immunological mediators. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the spatiotemporal expression profile of Kisspeptin/Kiss1r and angiogenic and immunological mediators in the uterus and placenta of domestic cats during pregnancy. Uterus and placenta samples were collected from cats in mid pregnancy (N = 6) and late pregnancy (N = 6), in addition to uterus from non-pregnant cats in diestrus (N = 7), to evaluate protein and gene expression of kisspeptin (Kiss1), kisspeptin receptor (Kiss1r), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), tyrosine kinase receptor (Flk-1), placental growth factor (PLGF), interferon gamma (INFγ), migration inhibiting factor (MIF), tumor necrosis factor (TNFα), interleukins (IL6 and IL10) by immunohistochemistry and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Pregnancy increased the uterine expression of Kiss1 and Kiss1r, especially at the late pregnancy, in addition to upregulating INFy, MIF, Vegf, Il10, and Tnf and downregulating Plgf. Higher placental expression of Kiss1r and Plgf mRNA occurred at the late pregnancy, while the expression of Kiss1, VEGF, Flk-1, INFy, TNFα, Il6, and IL10 was higher in the mid of pregnancy. A positive correlation between Kiss1 and Tnf was observed in the placenta, while Kiss1r had a negative correlation with Infγ, Il6, and Il10. The findings reveal that Kisspeptin/Kiss1r and angiogenic and immunological mediators at the maternal-fetal interface of pregnant cat have a gene correlation and are modulated by the gestational age. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the synthetic analog of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α)-cloprostenol-on cultured steroidogenic luteal cells of selected felid species over a 2-day culture period. The changes induced by cloprostenol were measured based on progesterone concentration and mRNA expression analysis of selected genes. Cloprostenol significantly reduced concentration of progesterone in cell culture medium of small luteal cells isolated from domestic cat corpora lutea (CL) at the development/maintenance stage (P < 0.05), but did not influence progesterone production in cultured cells from the regression stage. A decrease or complete silencing of progesterone production was also measured in cultured luteal cells of African lion (formation stage) and Javan leopard (development/maintenance stage). Gene-expression analysis by real-time PCR revealed that treatment with cloprostenol did not have an influence on expression of selected genes coding for enzymes of steroidogenesis (StAR, HSD3B, CYP11A1) or prostaglandin synthesis (PTGS2, PGES), nor did it effect hormone receptors (AR, ESR1, PGR, PTGER2), an anti-oxidative enzyme (SOD1) or factors of cell apoptosis (FAS, CASP3, TNFRSF1B, BCL2) over the studied period. Significant changes were measured only for expressions of luteinizing hormone (P < 0.05), prolactin (P < 0.05) and PGF2α receptors (P < 0.005) (LHCGR, PRLR, and PTGFR). The obtained results confirm that PGF2α/cloprostenol is a luteolytic agent in CL of felids and its impact on progesterone production depends on the developmental stage of the CL. Toxoplasma gondii is hypothesized to manipulate the behavior of warm-blooded hosts to promote trophic transmission into the parasite's definitive feline hosts. A key prediction of this hypothesis is that T. gondii infections of non-feline hosts are associated with costly behavior toward T. gondii's definitive hosts; however, this effect has not been documented in any of the parasite's diverse wild hosts during naturally occurring interactions with felines. Here, three decades of field observations reveal that T. gondii-infected hyena cubs approach lions more closely than uninfected peers and have higher rates of lion mortality. We discuss these results in light of 1) the possibility that hyena boldness represents an extended phenotype of the parasite, and 2) alternative scenarios in which T. gondii has not undergone selection to manipulate behavior in host hyenas. Both cases remain plausible and have important ramifications for T. gondii's impacts on host behavior and fitness in the wild.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of seasonality and phase of the estrous cycle on ovarian and oocyte morphology in domestic cats kept in a tropical region. The ovaries from 23 queens were collected after elective ovariohysterectomy at different stages of the estrous cycle and were classified according to the season upon collection (spring/summer vs. fall/winter). Based on the findings, we concluded that queens in tropical regions experience no seasonal influence on oocyte quality, but there is a minimal effect on ovarian morphology, with an increase in ovarian length during proestrus/estrus in the spring/summer period., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Kokumi taste is a well-accepted and characterised taste modality and is described as a sensation of enhancement of sweet, salty, and umami tastes. The Calcium Sensing Receptor (CaSR) has been designated as the putative kokumi taste receptor for humans, and a number of kokumi-active ligands of CaSR have been discovered recently with activity confirmed both in vivo and in vitro. Domestic cats (Felis catus) are obligate carnivores and accordingly, their diet is abundant in proteins, peptides, and amino acids. We hypothesised that CaSR is a key taste receptor for carnivores, due to its role in the detection of different peptides and amino acids in other species. Using in silico, in vitro and in vivo approaches, here we compare human CaSR to that of a model carnivore, the domestic cat. We found broad similarities in ligand specificity, but differences in taste sensitivity between the two species. Indeed our in vivo data shows that cats are sensitive to CaCl 2 as a kokumi compound, but don't show this same activity with Glutathione, whereas for humans the reverse is true. Collectively, our data suggest that kokumi is an important taste modality for carnivores that drives the palatability of meat-derived compounds such as amino acids and peptides, and that there are differences in the perception of kokumi taste between carnivores and omnivores.

Objective:  Cats rely on their forelimb mobility for everyday activities including climbing and grooming. Supination and pronation of the forelimb in cats are considered to primarily involve the antebrachium, rather than the carpus. Therefore, our null hypothesis was that there would be no movement of the carpal bones (radial carpal bone, ulnar carpal bone and accessory carpal bone) relative to the ulna during supination and pronation., Study Design:  Eight feline cadaveric forelimbs were rotated from supination to pronation in a jig and computed tomography was performed in the neutral, supinated and pronated positions. The individual carpal bones were segmented from computed tomography images of the supinated and pronated scans in each of the eight specimens. A feline ulna coordinate system was established and used to quantify the translations and rotations between bones of the proximal carpal row and antebrachium., Results:  After the carpus was rotated from the initial supinated position into pronation, there was significant translation (x, y and z axes) and rotation (x and y axes) of the proximal row of carpal bones based on absolute magnitude values. Given the differences in translations and rotations of the proximal row of carpal bones, our null hypothesis was rejected., Conclusion:  The proximal row of carpal bones translate and rotate independently from the ulna in the cat during pronation of the antebrachium. Objective: To compare effects of 2 IM sedation protocols, alfaxalone-butorphanol (AB) versus dexmedetomidine-butorphanol (DB), on echocardiographic (ECHO) variables in cats following sedation and blood donation., Design: Experimental randomized, blinded crossover study., Setting: University teaching hospital., Animals: Eleven client-owned healthy cats., Interventions: Cats received a baseline ECHO without sedation prior to their first donation. Cats were sedated intramuscularly with AB (alfaxalone, 2 mg/kg, and butorphanol, 0.2 mg/kg) for 1 donation and DB (dexmedetomidine, 10 μg/kg, and butorphanol 0.2, mg/kg) for another, with a minimum 6 weeks between donations. A post-sedation, post-donation ECHO was performed after each blood donation., Measurements and Main Results: Eight cats completed the study. Compared to baseline, DB combined with blood donation decreased heart rate (-84/min; P < 0.0001), fractional shortening (-16.5%; P < 0.0001), ejection fraction (-21.0%; P = 0.0002), and cardiac output (-292 mL/min, P = 0.0001); AB combined with blood donation increased heart rate (+45/min; P = 0.0003) and decreased left ventricular end diastolic volume (-1.57 mL; P < 0.0001). Compared to AB, DB decreased heart rate (-129/min; P < 0.0001) and fractional shortening (-21.6%; P < 0.0001) and increased left ventricular end-systolic (+1.14 mL; P = 0.0004) and diastolic volumes (+1.93 mL; P < 0.0002). Cats administered DB had a significant increase in regurgitant flow across mitral, aortic, and pulmonic valves following blood donation (P < 0.05). One cat administered DB developed spontaneous echo contrast in the left ventricle following donation., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Compared to AB, DB had more pronounced effects on ECHO variables in cats following IM sedation and blood donation. We show that epidural spinal cord stimulation can elicit stable bidirectional locomotion of decerebrate cats on a split-belt treadmill. The stepping pattern of one limb was similar to unidirectional forward walking and, the other-was similar to unidirectional backward walking. This confirms that spinal and brainstem circuitry are sufficient to control such complex and extraordinary motor tasks driven by somatosensory input. Interlimb coordination during forward and backward walking was preserved in 2 out of 4 animals during 'extreme' conditions when one of the treadmill belts was stopped. Bidirectional locomotion worsened but was still possible after temporary spinalization by cooling the spinal cord on a low thoracic level. These present evidence for the great degree of the automatism for this stepping mode defined by the spinal neuronal networks.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate cardiac morphology, indices of systolic and diastolic function, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and uterine artery resistance index (RI) during normal feline pregnancy. ANIMALS; MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty domestic short-hair pregnant queens, weighing 2.4-3.9 kg. Animals were assessed by two-dimensional, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography, non-invasive SBP measurement, and uterine Doppler ultrasound every 10 days from mating to parturition., Results: Interventricular septal thickness at end-diastole and end-systole, left ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole, left ventricular free wall thickness at end-diastole and end-systole, fractional shortening, stroke volume, cardiac output (CO), heart rate, and peak velocities of early and late diastolic transmitral flow increased during the second half of gestation, while SBP and RI decreased during the same period (p < 0.01)., Discussion and Conclusions: Cardiac structure and function varied during normal pregnancy in these queens. Eccentric hypertrophy, increased indices of systolic function, and increased measurements of CO seem to be the consequences of the hemodynamic modifications occurring during pregnancy. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of ageing on the cardiovascular system of healthy adult cats., Methods: Six experimental cats were used. Echocardiography and measurements of systolic blood pressure (SBP) were performed every year for 8 years (from 1 year of age to 8 years of age) in all cats. Age-related changes to left ventricular (LV) structures, LV systolic and diastolic function, and SBP were assessed., Results: There were no significant changes in LV structures and SBP. Peak longitudinal strain rate during systole was decreased at 8 years of age, and peak longitudinal strain rate during diastole was decreased from 6 years of age., Conclusions and Relevance: This study revealed that some measures of cardiac function recorded in six healthy cats from 1 to 8 years of age were affected as the cats got older; however, there were no structural changes or changes in measurements that are routinely assessed in clinical practice.

Several peptides found in hydrolysed poultry byproduct meal can inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity, a property that indicates potential antihypertensive and health-promoting effects. This study aimed to assess the effects of extruded diets containing enzymatically hydrolysed poultry byproduct meal (HPM) on cat serum ACE activity and aldosterone (ALD) concentration, nutrient digestibility, and faecal characteristics. On the basis of a preliminary in vitro ACE inhibitory activity assay, a commercial HPM and a commercial conventional poultry byproduct meal (CPM) were selected for further investigation. Two isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets were formulated: CPM diet (25.7% CPM) and HPM diet (24.7% HPM). In trial 1, the effect of diet on serum ACE activity and ALD concentration was evaluated using 8 healthy cats (4 female and 4 male, 4.1 ± 0.38 kg BW) in a crossover design, with 5 d of adaptation and blood collection on d 6. In trial 2, apparent total tract digestibility and faecal characteristics were evaluated using 12 cats (6 female and 6 male, 4.0 ± 0.72 kg BW) in a completely randomised design. Serum ACE and ALD were analysed using a mixed model, with diet as the fixed effect and cat as the random effect. Data from trial 2 were subjected to analysis of variance, and means were compared by Tukey's test. In vitro ACE inhibitory activity of HPM (90.4%) was higher than that of CPM (52.0%). Cats fed the HPM diet tended to have lower serum ACE activity than those fed the CPM diet (126 versus 142 U/l, p = 0.09). Serum ALD was not influenced by diet. Diets had similar digestibility values, and faecal consistency scores tended to be higher (firmer faeces) in cats fed the CPM diet than in cats fed the HPM diet (4.6 versus 4.0, p = 0.09). Inclusion of HPM in extruded diets may reduce cat serum ACE activity and promote good faecal consistency without affecting digestibility. Further investigations are needed to explore the potential health benefits of HPM in hypertensive cats.

Mus musculus and Rattus sp. are considered pest species because they reach high densities in urban areas, crop fields and food storage and productive systems such as breeding farms and orchards. Their control relies mainly on rodenticide application, but the effectiveness of this application is reduced due to behavioural responses and resistance. Novel methods are based on the use of chemical signals as odours that may be attractants, repellents or may reduce the reproductive success of pest species. The aim of this paper is to study the aversive effect of TMT, cat urine and cat body odour on predator-inexperienced Mus musculus and Rattus norvegicus under laboratory conditions. The experimental apparatus comprised three boxes connected by PVC pipes in a linear arrangement. In lateral boxes, odour sources or distilled water were introduced, while animals were placed in the central box at the beginning of the experiment. Rats showed freezing behaviour, reduced visits in the presence of TMT and cat fur. Mice reduced their visits with cat body and cat urine. This study provides evidence of the usefulness of using fear responses as a way to control rodent pests, which must be adapted to the environment and species to be applied., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Understanding wild animal responses to stressors underpins effective wildlife management. In order for responses to stressors to be correctly interpreted, it is critical that measurements are taken on wild animals using minimally invasive techniques. Studies investigating wild animal responses to stressors often measure either a single physiological or behavioural variable, but whether such responses are comparable and concordant remains uncertain. We investigated this question in a pilot study that measured responses of wild-caught urban brown and black rats (Rattus norvegicus, Rattus rattus) to fur-based olfactory cues from a predator, the domestic cat (Felis catus); a novel herbivore, the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus); and a familiar herbivore and competitor, the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula). Physiological responses, measured by assaying faecal glucocorticoid metabolites, were compared to behavioural responses observed via video recordings. We found that physiological and behavioural responses to stressors were expressed concordantly. There was no sizeable physiological response observed, and the behavioural response when considered across the night was negligible. However, the behavioural response to the predator and competitor cues changed across the observation period, with activity increasing with increasing hours of exposure. Our results indicate that responses of wild rodents to cues are nuanced, with stress responses modulated by behaviour changes that vary over time according to the severity of the perceived threat as animals gather further information. If the physiological response alone had been assessed, this moderated response may not have been evident, and in terms of wildlife management, vital information would have been lost.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the pharmacokinetics of oral transmucosal (OTM) detomidine gel in healthy cats and assess its effects on sedation and hemodynamic variables., Methods: Eight adult cats weighing 4.12 kg ± 0.72 received 4 mg/m 2 detomidine gel onto the buccal mucosa. Level of sedation, heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and respiratory rate ( f  R) were assessed at predetermined intervals following administration. Blood samples for plasma detomidine concentrations and venous blood gas variables were collected from a medial saphenous catheter. Plasma detomidine concentrations were analyzed using ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection, and pharmacokinetic estimates were obtained with compartmental methods. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and paired t -test or appropriate non-parametric tests., Results: Sedation occurred in all cats, and was increased from baseline at 30 mins ( P <0.001). Decreases in HR occurred from 15-60 mins, ranging from 140 to 165 beats per min ( P <0.001). Blood glucose increased from 101 ± 12 mg/dl to 168 ± 27.3 mg/dl at 60 mins ( P  = 0.004). Systolic blood pressure decreased from baseline (139 ± 14.8 mmHg) to 103 ± 23.0 mmHg at 60 mins ( P  = 0.023). All changes abated by 120 mins. Emesis occurred in 7/7 cats within 2 mins of gel administration. Geometric mean (coefficient of variation) for clearance was 220.7 ml/min/kg (35.3 ml/min/kg), volume of distribution was 14.9 l/kg (39.9 l/kg) (both a function of bioavailability) and elimination half-life was 46.9 mins (16.0 mins). Maximum plasma concentrations of 10.5 ng/ml (35.5 ng/ml) detomidine occurred at 36.9 mins (21.5 mins)., Conclusions and Relevance: OTM detomidine gel produced moderate sedation with minimal undesirable side effects in healthy cats, although emesis occurred in all cats. The pharmacokinetic profile supports short-term, minimally invasive sedation in this species. Further studies are warranted to assess its safety and feasibility for use in debilitated cats, or prior to general anesthesia.

Objectives: Cats with hyperthyroidism have been reported to develop thromboembolism, with and without echocardiographic abnormalities consistent with hyperthyroidism. The objective of this study was to compare platelet function in cats with hyperthyroidism with euthyroid age-matched cats. We hypothesized that cats with hyperthyroidism have shortened collagen and adenosine diphosphate (C-ADP) closure times as measured with the platelet function analyzer (PFA-100) in comparison with healthy, age-matched controls., Methods: Sixteen hyperthyroid and nine euthyroid healthy cats >7 years of age were recruited from the hospital population. Platelet function, measured using the C-ADP closure times by the PFA-100, and platelet count were measured in healthy euthyroid cats and cats with hyperthyroidism., Results: Mean ± SD closure times were not significantly different between control (66.3 ± 9.6 s) and hyperthyroid cats (65.9 ± 11.5 s; P  = 0.75). The mean ± SD closure times of hyperthyroid cats that either were untreated or received methimazole for ⩽3 weeks (n = 6; mean 68.5 ± 15.4 s) was not different than that of cats treated for >3 weeks (n = 10; mean 64.3 ± 8.9 s; P  = 0.57). The mean automated platelet count was higher in the hyperthyroid group than in the control group ( P  = 0.023)., Conclusions and Relevance: Platelet function, as measured by closure time under high shear conditions using C-ADP as an agonist, was not affected by hyperthyroidism in this group of cats. Further research is needed to determine if a hypercoagulable state exists in hyperthyroid cats and the potential roles platelets and von Willebrand factor may have.

Background: This study aimed to determine if obese cats undergoing energy restriction for weight loss would meet the National Research Council's (NRC) indispensable amino acid and vitamin recommendations when fed a purpose-formulated diet. Thirty cats were placed into one of two groups; obese (BCS 8 to 9/9; n = 16) and lean (BCS 4 to 5/9; n = 14) and included in a non-randomized retrospective observational study. Cats were fed a veterinary weight loss food during a 4-week period of weight maintenance. Obese cats (O-MAINT) refers to obese cats during this period, L-MAINT to lean cats. After this initial 4-week period, the lean cats finished the study at this time and the 16 obese cats continued and were energy restricted for a 10-week period (O-RESTRICT). Analysis for dietary concentrations of indispensable amino acid and vitamin contents were performed. Daily food intakes were used to determine minimum, maximum and average daily intakes of individual nutrients for all three groups and compared against NRC 2006 minimum requirements (MR), adequate intakes (AI) and recommended allowances (RA) for adult cats., Results: Over 10 weeks, O-RESTRICT cats lost 672 g ± 303 g, representing a weight loss rate of 0.94 ± 0.28% per week. Daily intake of the majority of indispensable amino acids and vitamins was greater than the NRC 2006 recommended allowance (RA per kg ideal body weight ^0.67), except for arginine, choline, crude protein, phenylalanine plus tyrosine and threonine. All O-RESTRICT cats had minimum, average, and maximum arginine intakes less than the NRC AI. Minimum daily intake of choline was below NRC RA for all O-RESTRICT cats and below NRC MR for two. All, except one, O-RESTRICT cats had a maximum and average choline intake below RA., Conclusions: All cats remained clinically healthy and showed no clinical signs of deficiency. Dietary choline and arginine requirements of obese cats as well as health risks associated with low dietary intake during energy restriction warrant further investigation.

Aims: To evaluate the efficacy of insulating the limbs and thorax of cats with a combination of bubble wrap and an absorbent, plastic-lined pad in reducing heat loss during ovariohysterectomy. Methods: A preliminary study was performed to compare heat loss of 1 L bags of Hartmann's solution heated to 38°C which were either wrapped in two layers of bubble wrap and an absorbent pad (n = 6) or were unwrapped (n = 6). Bags were allowed to cool in a temperature-controlled room and the temperature of the bags was measured every 10 minutes for 60 minutes. The clinical study, included 16 intact female cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy. The cats were premedicated with I/M morphine and either medetomidine or dexmedetomidine, and anaesthesia was induced with I/V propofol and maintained with isoflurane in 100% oxygen. Cats were randomly assigned to either the treatment group (n = 8) whose limbs and thorax wrapped with two layers of bubble wrap and an absorbent pad immediately after induction, or the control group (n = 8) which were unwrapped. Body temperature (measured with an oesophageal temperature probe), heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure and partial pressure of end-tidal CO 2 were recorded immediately after induction ( T start ), before surgery started ( T surgery ), and at the end of isoflurane administration ( T end ). The times from T end to extubation, from T end to when the cat could maintain sternal recumbency and from T end to when the cat was able to stand, were also recorded. Results: In the preliminary study of heat loss by fluid bags, the mean temperature at 60 minutes was higher in wrapped bags (35.4 (SD 0.2)°C) compared to unwrapped bags (33.0 (SD 0.3)°C; p < 0.01). For cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy, mean body temperature of wrapped cats was higher than that of unwrapped cats both at T surgery (36.0 (SE 0.3) vs. 34.5 (SE 0.3)°C; p = 0.001) and at T end (37.2 (SE 0.5) vs. 36.0 (SE 0.5)°C; p = 0.01). Wrapped cats regained the ability to stand more rapidly that unwrapped cats (26.4 (SE 5.8) vs. 47.0 (SE 5.8) minutes p = 0.01). Conclusions: Wrapping the limbs and thorax of cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy in a combination of bubble wrap and absorbent pads reduced heat loss, which in turn improved recovery time from general anaesthesia. Clinical relevance: This inexpensive and practical method may reduce perioperative hypothermia, in cats undergoing abdominal surgery.

Both cats and dogs belong to animals with the same type of limb support but have different nature of movement. Despite belonging to digitigrade animals, cats and dogs have a different nature of motion. While moving, the medial joint surface in cats and lateral surface in dogs carry the larger pressure. The aim of the study was to compare the similar surfaces of the cat's and dog's tarsal joint capsule and to detect differences in its histostructure and vascularisation. For the study, we used the capsule of the tarsal joint of five cats and five dogs dissected with accordance to anatomical surfaces. Sections of the capsule joint were stained with haematoxylin-eosin. The sections were examined with a microscope at magnification ×250 and ×400. The statistical analysis of the results was done using Student's t test. During the research, a difference in histostructure and vascularisation of tarsal joint capsule in cats and dogs on respective surfaces were found. The medial surface of the tarsal joint capsule was the most saturated with hemomicrocirculatory bed structures in cats, whereas this was the lateral surface in dogs. The most active metabolic processes also take place in these areas of the joint capsule, which is important to know when prescribing therapeutic procedures and determining an optimal surgical access., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The practice of creating and maintaining general anesthesia using intravenous anesthetic drugs is defined as total intravenous anesthesia. Total intravenous anesthesia produces general anesthesia by selective drug properties that fulfill the 3 elements of anesthesia. Total intravenous anesthesia has potential application in veterinary emergency and critical care medicine.
