The strategies for and the performance of the CMS silicon tracking system alignment during the 2015-2018 data-taking period of the LHC are described. The alignment procedures during and after data taking are explained. Alignment scenarios are also derived for use in the simulation of the detector response. Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction ($ep\to e^\prime p^\prime \pi^0$) was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4\sigma/dtdQ^2dx_Bd\phi_\pi$ and structure functions $\sigma_T+\epsilon\sigma_L, \sigma_{TT}$ and $\sigma_{LT}$ as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found that the inclusion of vector meson rescattering processes is necessary to bring the magnitude of the calculated and measured structure functions into rough agreement. In the handbag framework, there are two independent calculations, both of which appear to roughly explain the magnitude of the structure functions in terms of transversity generalized parton distributions.

- Abstract
Measurements of γp→K+Λ and γp→K+Σ0 cross-sections have been obtained with the photon tagging facility and the Crystal Ball calorimeter at MAMI-C. The measurement uses a novel K+ meson identification technique in which the weak decay products are characterized using the energy and timing characteristics of the energy deposit in the calorimeter, a method that has the potential to be applied at many other facilities. The fine center-of-mass energy ( W ) resolution and statistical accuracy of the new data results in a significant impact on partial wave analyses aiming to better establish the excitation spectrum of the nucleon. The new analyses disfavor a strong role for quark–diquark dynamics in the nucleon.

69A3551747104, To predict if the “social distancing” nature and resulting shifts in behavior from the pandemic continued to persist after the pandemic ended, this work examined preferences and behaviors towards shared mobility during different stages of the pandemic. Although levels of comfort using shared modes improved since the summer of 2021, participants still reported that their comfort using transit, ride-hailing, and shared ride-hailing would not fully return to pre-pandemic levels by October 2022. Understanding the impact and response from this disruption was important to aid policymakers in building a more resilient and sustainable transportation system. Creating a flexible curb design is essential for such a space to be both permeable and efficient in dealing with evolving demand. Curb data collected in Atlanta, GA, showed that pick-up/drop-off activity differs significantly from traditional parking behaviors both in terms of dwell time and event location and also allowed for a calibration of double-parking behavior. Application of micro simulations models identified that a progressive shift away from traditional long-term parking towards PUDO led to an observed higher curb productivity and lower occupancy. The introduction of dedicated pick-up/drop-off zones at the curb created significant reductions in delay.

Transportation is essential for people with disabilities and older adults to participate in society. It impacts access to healthcare, essential goods and services, interactions with friends and family, and ability to work or attend school, as well as a host of other activities. The Automated Vehicle Services for People with Disabilities—Involved Responsive Engineering (ASPIRE) Center at the University of Pittsburgh is studying how people with disabilities and older adults are affected by access to safe, reliable, timely, and accessible transportation. There are many aspects of accessible transportation and the team of researchers at ASPIRE are addressing areas that need improvement. Driving is regarded as an important aspect of personal freedom and autonomy; however, access is very restricted for non-drivers, especially if they live outside the largest metropolitan areas with limited access to public transportation.

The careful application of human factors design principles and guidelines is integral to, the development of safe, efficient and usable Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). One, segment of the driving population that may significantly benefit from ITS is older drivers. The, population of older drivers is steadily increasing and concerns pertaining to their needs, capabilities-and limitations will likely intensify (1). Though older drivers are under-represented in crashes and fatalities relative to their numbers in the U.S. population, their per mile crash involvement and fatality rates are higher than other driver segments (2). To address issues related to older drivers, a tool has been developed to categorize a spectrum of countermeasures: a taxonomy of safety interventions. This taxonomy provides a framework for examining the problems and research directions associated with nine primary areas of focus: (1) Driver Licensing, (2) Driver Training/Counseling, (3) Crashworthiness/Occupant Protection, (4) Post-Crash Medical Care, (5) Behavioral Medicine, (6) Fitness-For-Duty (FFD), (7) Environmental Issues, (8) Cooperative Systems, and (9) Vehicle Design/Crash Avoidance. The taxonomy is structured such that consideration can be given to each primary area independently and in relation to other primary areas. Consideration of each area independently, and how they interact with other areas, may lead to more comprehensive countermeasures. The applicability of ITS crash avoidance technology for older drivers can be addressed in this context. Given the reduction of sensory, perceptual, cognitive, and motor capabilities that are associated with aging, designing in-vehicle ITS for older drivers is apt to be challenging. ITS technology has the potential to be a “double-edged sword” for the older driver; systems that are designed to assist in safe driving may also add mental and physical workload and confusion to the driving task. Consideration of older driver issues, and the utilization of a user-centered design approach, may aid in the realization of ITS goals and objectives, making them safe, efficient and usable for both younger and older drivers.

- Abstract
A global damage detection algorithm for bridge-like Structures is proposed. This method provides the capability of determining the reduction in both stiffness and damping parameters of the structural elements. It is assumed the mass of the structural elements is not affected by the damages. The proposed method uses the state-space representation of the structural dynamics to determine the existence of a damage, geometric location of the damage, and the severity of the damage.

Red supergiants are the most common final evolutionary stage of stars that have initial masses between 8 and 35 times that of the Sun1. During this stage, which lasts roughly 100,000 years1, red supergiants experience substantial mass loss. However, the mechanism for this mass loss is unknown2. Mass loss may affect the evolutionary path, collapse and future supernova light curve3 of a red supergiant, and its ultimate fate as either a neutron star or a black hole4. From November 2019 to March 2020, Betelgeuse—the second-closest red supergiant to Earth (roughly 220 parsecs, or 724 light years, away)5,6—experienced a historic dimming of its visible brightness. Usually having an apparent magnitude between 0.1 and 1.0, its visual brightness decreased to 1.614 ± 0.008 magnitudes around 7–13 February 20207—an event referred to as Betelgeuse’s Great Dimming. Here we report high-angular-resolution observations showing that the southern hemisphere of Betelgeuse was ten times darker than usual in the visible spectrum during its Great Dimming. Observations and modelling support a scenario in which a dust clump formed recently in the vicinity of the star, owing to a local temperature decrease in a cool patch that appeared on the photosphere. The directly imaged brightness variations of Betelgeuse evolved on a timescale of weeks. Our findings suggest that a component of mass loss from red supergiants8 is inhomogeneous, linked to a very contrasted and rapidly changing photosphere. The southern hemisphere of Betelgeuse during its Great Dimming was an order of magnitude darker than usual, owing to a cool patch on the photosphere and associated dust formation.

International audience; The OSA Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH) was held 25–28 July 2016 in Heidelberg, Germany, as part of the Imaging Congress. Feature issues based on the DH meeting series have been released by Applied Optics (AO) since 2007. This year, AO and the Journal of the Optical Society of America B (JOSA B) jointly decided to have one such feature issue in each journal. This feature issue includes 31 papers in AO and 11 in JOSA B, and covers a large range of topics, reflecting the rapidly expanding techniques and applications of digital holography and 3D imaging. The upcoming DH meeting (DH 2017) will be held from 29 May to 1 June at Jeju Island, South Korea.
