The chance assembling of a number of different impressions of Andrew Dury's Map of the present Seat of War between the Russians, Poles, and Turks (1769) in the British Library led the authors to examine the map's carto‐bibliographical history. Nine states of the map, two of which were sometimes sold with printed paste‐ons, have been identified to date. The two earliest states of the map are now in the State Historical Museum, Moscow. Although both are best described as proof, or pre‐publication, impressions, each bears evidence of intensive use at the highest levels of the Russian army command. Indeed, the circumstances leading to the creation of the map by Andrew Dury and Peter Bell and to a succession of different versions over the three decades or so of intermittent Russian‐Turkish hostilities highlight the interplay of international politics, individual initiative and commercial factors in late eighteenth‐century map production in London.

In focusing on the ‘history’ of the history of cartography, attention is drawn to the need to distinguish between two sources of theory: critical theory, for the way maps are interpreted as historical documents; and a variety of bodies of theory (such as those of the social sciences, humanities, and sciences) for the information derived from maps. The argument touches on the relationship of history, by definition a text‐based (in broad terms) subject, with critical theory, and their common preoccupation with problems of authorship, the importance of context and genre at the empirical level, and the different levels of relevance of theory to the history of cartography.

Early probate inventories, an under‐used source in the history of cartography, can provide an insight into sixteenth‐century map ownership. Those from the Vice‐Chancellor's Court at Cambridge, for example, are sufficiently detailed in many cases to show how the university towns of England must have comprised a distinctive map market, how there were different categories of map owners within the university ambit, what maps were bought, and for what purpose. A number of the maps and atlases can be identified and the existence of lost maps confirmed.

Drawing for explanation flourished in the medieval West in biblical exegesis. Some Christian and Jewish scholars, holding that the literal meaning of the holy scriptures had to be established before the allegorical and typological meanings could be reached, made good use of visual exegesis. Of the few Christian scholars who attempted a literal interpretation of the notoriously difficult Old Testament book of the prophet Ezekiel, one was Richard of St Victor (In visionem Ezechielis, before 1173) and another was Nicholas of Lyra (Postilla literalis super totam Bibliam,1323–32), who had read Richard's work and also, like him, seen the Jewish scholar Rashi's illustrations for Ezekiel. Both Richard and Nicholas supported their arguments with the plans of Ezekiel's visionary temple and the map that places the temple in its regional context discussed in this essay. Also discussed is the subsequent adaptation of these medieval diagrammatic maps for a quite different readership.

Professional geographers use maps to reveal spatial patterns in their data and to seek correlations in those patterns, although they no longer always do so by the time-honoured method of simple visual comparison of distributions on a series of paper maps. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are founded on maps stored electronically. In most British geography departments, cartography has been distanced from geography. This chapter discusses the use of maps in geography, quantification and spatial science, maps and public policy in Britain, thematic mapping, compilation of atlases and reading of maps.

LUNI E L'AGER LUNENSISQuattro campagne di ricerca sono state eseguite tra il 1978 e il 1981 nella zona immediatamente circostante la città Romana abbandonata di Luna (Luni) in Liguria. Lo scopo della ricerca era di contribuire a spiegare come una grande città sia fiorita qui in epoca Romana, e perchè sia sparita agli inizi del Medioevo. La ricerca archeologica di superficie (parte 2) ha rivelato poco dell'epoca preistorica e medievale, ma ha individuato resti sparsi di fattorie Romane, specialmente nelle collinette che sovrastano la città. Queste fattorie collinari, una delle quali è stata scavata (Parte 3), sembra siano state abbandonate verso la fine del I sec. d.C, e viene ipotizzato che esse dipendessero per la loro sussistenza dalla produzione e dall'esportazione di vino e olio.
