A tight binding supercell approach is used for the calculation of the electronic structure of the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. The confinement potential at the interface is evaluated solving a discrete Poisson equation by means of an iterative method. In addition to the effect of the confinement, local Hubbard electron-electron terms are included at mean-field level within a fully self-consistent procedure. The calculation carefully describes how the two-dimensional electron gas arises from the quantum confinement of electrons near the interface due to band bending potential. The resulting electronic sub-bands and Fermi surfaces show full agreement with the electronic structure determined by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In particular, it is analyzed how the effect of local Hubbard interactions changes the density distribution over the layers from the interface to the bulk. Interestingly, the two-dimensional electron gas at interface is not depleted by local Hubbard interactions which indeed induce an enhancement of the electron density between the first layers and the bulk., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Converting charge current into spin current is one of the main mechanisms exploited in spintronics. One prominent example is the Edelstein effect, namely the generation of a magnetization in response to an external electric field, which can be realized in systems with lack of inversion symmetry. If a system has electrons with an orbital angular momentum character, an orbital magnetization can be generated by the applied electric field giving rise to the so-called orbital Edelstein effect. Oxide heterostructures are the ideal platform for these effects due to the strong spin-orbit coupling and the lack of inversion symmetries. Beyond a gate-tunable spin Edelstein effect, we predict an orbital Edelstein effect an order of magnitude larger then the spin one at the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. We model the material as a bilayer of $t_{2g}$ orbitals using a tight-binding approach, while transport properties are obtained in the Boltzmann approach. We give an effective model at low filling which explains the non-trivial behaviour of the Edelstein response, showing that the hybridization between the electronic bands crucially impacts the Edelstein susceptibility., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We discuss whether, and under which conditions, it is possible to realize a heat engine simply by dynamically modulating the couplings between the quantum working medium and thermal reservoirs. For that purpose, we consider the paradigmatic model of a quantum harmonic oscillator, exposed to a minimal modulation, that is, a monochromatic driving of the coupling to only one of the thermal baths. We demonstrate, at any order in the system/bath coupling strength, that in this setup non--Markovianity of the bath is a necessary condition to obtain a heat engine. In addition, we identify suitable structured environments for the engine to approach the ideal Carnot efficiency. We present the theoretical prediction of a gate tunable anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in an oxide interface as a hallmark of spin-orbit coupling. The observed AHE at low-temperatures in the presence of an external magnetic field emerges from a complex structure of the Berry curvature of the electrons on the Fermi surface and strongly depends on the orbital character of the occupied bands. A detailed picture of the results comes from a multiband low-energy model with a generalized Rashba interaction that supports characteristic out-of-plane spin and orbital textures. The quasi-two-dimensional electronic gas at the (111) SrTiO$_3$-based heterostructure interfaces is described by a multi-band tight-binding model providing electronic bands in agreement at low energies with photoemission experiments. We analyze both the roles of the spin-orbit coupling and of the trigonal crystal field effects. We point out the presence of a regime with sizable strain where the band structure exhibits a Dirac cone whose features are consistent with \textit{ab-initio} approaches. The combined effect of spin-orbit coupling and trigonal strain gives rise to non-trivial spin and orbital angular momenta patterns in the Brillouin zone and to quantum spin Hall effect by opening a gap at the Dirac cone. The system can switch from a conducting to a topological insulating state \textit{via} modification of trigonal strain within a parameter range which is estimated to be experimentally achievable., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures

Describing the thermodynamic properties of quantum systems far from equilibrium is challenging, in particular when the system is strongly coupled to its environment, or when memory effects cannot be neglected. Here, we address such regimes when the system-baths couplings are periodically modulated in time. We show that the couplings modulation, usually associated to a purely dissipative effect when done nonadiabatically, can be suitably engineered to perform thermodynamic tasks. In particular, asymmetric couplings to two heat baths can be used to extract heat from the cold reservoir and to realize an ideal heat rectifier, where the heat current can be blocked either in the forward or in the reverse configuration by simply tuning the frequency of the couplings modulation. Interestingly, both effects take place in the low-temperature, quantum non Markovian regime. Starting with Carnot engine, the ideal efficiency of a heat engine has been associated with quasi-static transformations and vanishingly small output power. Here, we exactly calculate the thermodynamic properties of a isothermal heat engine, in which the working medium is a periodically driven underdamped harmonic oscillator, focusing instead on the opposite, anti-adiabatic limit, where the period of a cycle is the fastest time scale in the problem. We show that in that limit it is possible to approach the ideal energy conversion efficiency $\eta=1$, with finite output power and vanishingly small relative power fluctuations. The simultaneous realization of all the three desiderata of a heat engine is possible thanks to the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We also show that non-Markovian dynamics can further improve the power-efficiency trade-off.

We study a model of isothermal steady-state work-to-work converter, where a single quantum two-level system (TLS) driven by time-dependent periodic external fields acts as the working medium and is permanently put in contact with a thermal reservoir at fixed temperature $T$. By combining Short-Iterative Lanczos (SIL) method and analytic approaches, we study the converter performance in the linear response regime and in a wide range of driving frequencies, from weak to strong dissipation. We show that for our ideal quantum machine several parameter ranges exist where a violation of Thermodynamics Uncertainty Relations (TUR) occurs. We find the violation to depend on the driving frequency and on the dissipation strength, and we trace it back to the degree of coherence of the quantum converter. We eventually discuss the influence of other possible sources of violation, such as non-Markovian effects during the converter dynamics.

Identifying which master equation is preferable for the description of a multipartite open quantum system is not trivial and has led in the recent years to the local vs. global debate in the context of Markovian dissipation. We treat here a paradigmatic scenario in which the system is composed of two interacting harmonic oscillators A and B, with only A interacting with a thermal bath - collection of other harmonic oscillators - and we study the equilibration process of the system initially in the ground state with the bath finite temperature. We show that the completely positive version of the Redfield equation obtained using coarse-grain and an appropriate time-dependent convex mixture of the local and global solutions give rise to the most accurate semigroup approximations of the whole exact system dynamics, i.e. both at short and at long time scales, outperforming the local and global approaches.

Finding the exact counterdiabatic potential is, in principle, particularly demanding. Following recent progresses about variational strategies to approximate the counterdiabatic operator, in this paper we apply this technique to the quantum annealing of the $p$-spin model. In particular, for $ p = 3 $ we find a new form of the counterdiabatic potential originating from a cyclic ansatz, that allows us to have optimal fidelity even for extremely short dynamics, independently of the size of the system. We compare our results with a nested commutator ansatz, recently proposed in P. W. Claeys, M. Pandey, D. Sels, and A. Polkovnikov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 090602 (2019), for $ p = 1 $ and $ p = 3 $. Embedding $p$-body interacting models onto the $2$-body networks implemented on commercial quantum annealers is a relevant issue. For highly interacting models, requiring a number of ancilla qubits, that can be sizable and make unfeasible (if not impossible) to simulate such systems. In this manuscript, we propose an alternative to minor embedding, developing a new approximate procedure based on genetic algorithms, allowing to decouple the $p$-body in terms of $2$-body interactions. A set of preliminary numerical experiments demonstrates the feasibility of our approach for the ferromagnetic $p$-spin model, and pave the way towards the application of evolutionary strategies to more complex quantum models., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

In this work, the general problem of the characterization of the topological phase of an open quantum system is addressed. In particular, we study the topological properties of Kitaev chains and ladders under the perturbing effect of a current flux injected into the system using an external normal lead and derived from it via a superconducting electrode. After discussing the topological phase diagram of the isolated systems, using a scattering technique within the Bogoliubov de Gennes formulation, we analyze the differential conductance properties of these topological devices as a function of all relevant model parameters. The relevant problem of implementing local spectroscopic measurements to characterize topological systems is also addressed by studying the system electrical response as a function of the position and the distance of the normal electrode (tip). The results show how the signatures of topological order affect the electrical response of the analyzed systems, a subset of which being robust also against the effects of a moderate amount of disorder. The analysis of the internal modes of the nanodevices demonstrates that topological protection can be lost when quantum states of an initially isolated topological system are hybridized with those of the external reservoirs. We combine state-of-the-art large-scale first principles calculations with a low-energy continuum model to describe the nearly flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene at the first magic angle $\theta =1.08^\circ$. We show that the energy width of the flat band manifold, as well as the energy gap separating it from the valence and conduction bands, can be obtained only if the out-of-plane relaxations are fully taken into account. We discuss the quantum annealing of the fully-connected ferromagnetic $ p $-spin model in a dissipative environment at low temperature. This model, in the large $ p $ limit, encodes in its ground state the solution to the Grover's problem of searching in unsorted databases. In the framework of the quantum circuit model, a quantum algorithm is known for this task, providing a quadratic speed-up with respect to its best classical counterpart. This improvement is not recovered in adiabatic quantum computation for an isolated quantum processor. We analyze the same problem in the presence of a low-temperature reservoir, using a Markovian quantum master equation in Lindblad form, and we show that a thermal enhancement is achieved in the presence of a zero temperature environment moderately coupled to the quantum annealer., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, proceeding of IQIS 2018

We propose a numerical technique based on a combination of short-iterative Lanczos and exact diagonalization methods, suitable for simulating the time evolution of the reduced density matrix of a single qubit interacting with an environment. By choosing a mode discretization method and a flexible bath states truncation scheme, we are able to include in the physical description multiple-excitation processes, beyond weak coupling and Markov approximations. We apply our technique to the simulation of three different model Hamiltonians, which are relevant in the field of adiabatic quantum computation. We compare our results with those obtained on the basis of the widely used Lindblad master equation, as well as with well-known exact and approximated approaches. We show that our method is able to recover the thermodynamic behavior of the qubit-bath system, beyond the Born-Markov approximation. Finally, we show that even in the case of the adiabatic quantum annealing of a single qubit the bath can be beneficial in reaching the reduced system ground state., Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures

We study experimentally the Raman response of the undoped high-Tc parent compound $YBa_2Cu_3O_6$, and give a unified theory of the two-magnon Raman peak and optical conductivity based on the Hubbard-Holstein model with electron-phonon coupling (EPC). The Hubbard model without EPC can qualitatively account for the experimentally observed resonance of the Raman response, but only the Hubbard-Holstein model (i) reproduces asymmetry of the Raman spectrum, (ii) validates experimental visibility of the two-magnon peak, and (iii) predicts the correct shape and energy of the lower edge of the charge transfer gap in optical conductivity. Comparison of experiments with the theory gives the EPC strength $\lambda$ = 0.6. This result convincingly indicates the vital role of EPC in high-Tc cuprates providing a clue to the mechanism of high-Tc.

Many phenomena in solid-state physics can be understood in terms of their topological properties. Recently, controlled protocols of quantum walks are proving to be effective simulators of such phenomena. Here we report the realization of a photonic quantum walk showing both the trivial and the non-trivial topologies associated with chiral symmetry in one-dimensional periodic systems, as in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of polyacetylene. We find that the probability distribution moments of the walker position after many steps behave differently in the two topological phases and can be used as direct indicators of the quantum transition: while varying a control parameter, these moments exhibit a slope discontinuity at the transition point, and remain constant in the non-trivial phase. Extending this approach to higher dimensions, different topological classes, and other typologies of quantum phases may offer new general instruments for investigating quantum transitions in such complex systems.

The non-equilibrium semiconductors physics is based on the paradigm that different degrees of freedom interact on different timescales. In this context the photo-excitation is often treated as an impulsive injection of electronic energy that is transferred to other degrees of freedom only at later times. Here, by studying the ultrafast particles dynamics in a archetypal strongly correlated charge-transfer insulator (La2CuO4), we show that the interaction between electrons and bosons manifest itself directly in the photo-excitation processes of a correlated material. With the aid of a general theoretical framework (Hubbard Holstein Hamiltonian), we reveal that sub-gap excitation pilots the formation of itinerant quasi-particles which are suddently dressed (<100 fs) by an ultrafast reaction of the bosonic field.

Transport properties, spectral function and optical conductivity of the adiabatic one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model are studied with particular emphasis on the model parameters suitable for Rubrene single crystals based field effect transistors. We show that the mobility, calculated by using the Kubo formula for conductivity, vanishes unless we introduce an "ad hoc" broadening of the system energy levels. Furthermore, the apparent contradiction between angle resolved photoemission data and transport properties is clarified by studying the behavior of the spectral function. Finally, a peak in the optical conductivity at very low energy is obtained and discussed in connection with the available experimental data for Rubrene based devices.

The optical conductivity (OC) of cuprates is studied theoretically in the low density limit of the t-t'-J-Holstein model. By developing a limited phonon basis exact diagonalization (LPBED) method capable of treating the lattice of largest size 4x4 ever considered, we are able to discern fine features of the mid-infrared (MIR) part of the OC revealing three-peak structure. The two lowest peaks are observed in experiments and the highest one is tacitly resolved in moderately doped cuprates. Comparison of OC with the results of semianalytic approaches and detailed analysis of the calculated isotope effect indicate that the middle-energy MIR peak is of mostly magnetic origin while the lowest MIR band originates from the scattering of holes by phonons.

We present a formalism to study quantum networks made up by single-channel quantum wires in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field. In particular, linear transport through one-dimensional and two-dimensional finite-size networks is studied by means of the scattering formalism. In some particular quantum networks, the action of the magnetic field or of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling induces localization of the electron wave function. This phenomenon, which relies on both the quantum-mechanical interference and the geometry of the network, is manifested through the suppression of the conductance for specific values of the spin-orbit-coupling strength or of the magnetic field. Furthermore, the interplay of the Aharonov-Bohm phases and of the non-Abelian phases introduced by spin-orbit coupling, is discussed in a number of cases., Comment: 8 pages and 6 figures

We study a quantum network extending in one-dimension (chain of square loops connected at one vertex) made up of quantum wires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We show that the Rashba effect may give rise to an electron localization phenomenon similar to the one induced by magnetic field. This localization effect can be attributed to the spin precession due to the Rashba effect. We present results both for the spectral properties of the infinite chain, and for linear transport through a finite-size chain connected to leads. In this Letter we study the phase diagram and the approach to the equilibrium of Josephson junction arrays on a dice lattice for two different values of the magnetic frustration ($f=1/2,1/3$). In both cases the array unedrgoes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless like phase transition. For the fully frustrated array, $f=1/2$, we find evidence of a {\em glassy behavior} although the system has {\em no disorder}. For comparison we study dynamics of the array at a different value of frustration ($f=1/3$) and find no trace of glassy dynamics., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures
