2. Science and Heritage Language Integrated Learning (SHLIL): Evidence of the Effectiveness of an Innovative Science Outreach Program for Migrant Students

Migrant students tend to underperform in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and are less likely to pursue higher education in STEM when compared with their nonmigrant peers. Given the substantial increase in migration, this disparity has been a central concern in science education in many European countries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an innovative science outreach program that brings together migrant students and STEM professionals with the same linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The program consists of one-off workshops that follow an inquiry-based approach and include hands-on activities and science communication in the students' heritage language. Using surveys with adapted scales and open-ended questions, we applied a randomized block design with waitlist control groups and repeated measures. Eighty-three Portuguese-speaking migrant students aged 6-17 years participated in the workshops in Germany and the United Kingdom. Results indicate that both the students and STEM professionals evaluated the program positively and that students who participated in the workshops tended to demonstrate an increase in their attainment value for science and an increase in their self-concept of ability for the heritage language 4 weeks after the intervention when compared with students in the control condition. These effects were particularly pronounced for students with low prior motivation to study science or speak the heritage language. Our results thus show that it is possible to foster migrant students' attainment value for science and increase their self-concept of ability regarding the heritage language through a brief science outreach intervention.

The increase in global pesticide use has mirrored the rising demand for food over the last decades, resulting in a boost in crop yields. However, concerns about the impact of pesticides on biodiversity, ecosystems, and human health, especially for populations residing close to cultivated areas, are growing. This study investigates how exposure and possible risks to residents can be estimated at high spatial granularity based on plant protection product data. The complexities of such analysis were explored in France, where relevant data with good granularity are publicly available. Integrating sets of spatial datasets and exposure assessment methodologies, we have developed an indicator to monitor the levels of pesticide risk faced by residents. By spatialising pesticide sales data according to their authorization on specific crops, we developed a detailed map depicting potential pesticide loads at parcel level across France. This spatial distribution served as the basis for an exposure and risk assessment, modelled following the European Food Safety Authority's guidelines. Combining the risk map with population distribution data, we have developed an indicator that allows to monitor patterns in non-dietary exposure to pesticides. Our results show that in France, on average, 13% of people might be exposed to pesticides due to living in the proximity to treated crops. This exposure is in the lower range for 34%, moderate range for 40% and higher range for 25% of the exposed population. The risk evaluation is based on worst case assumptions and values should not be taken as a regulatory risk assessment but as indicator to use, for example, for monitoring time trends. The purpose of this indicator is to demonstrate that more granular pesticide data can improve risk reduction strategies. Many graph representation learning (GRL) problems are dynamic, with millions of edges added or removed per second. A fundamental workload in this setting is dynamic link prediction: using a history of graph updates to predict whether a given pair of vertices will become connected. Recent schemes for link prediction in such dynamic settings employ Transformers, modeling individual graph updates as single tokens. In this work, we propose HOT: a model that enhances this line of works by harnessing higher-order (HO) graph structures; specifically, k-hop neighbors and more general subgraphs containing a given pair of vertices. Harnessing such HO structures by encoding them into the attention matrix of the underlying Transformer results in higher accuracy of link prediction outcomes, but at the expense of increased memory pressure. To alleviate this, we resort to a recent class of schemes that impose hierarchy on the attention matrix, significantly reducing memory footprint. The final design offers a sweetspot between high accuracy and low memory utilization. HOT outperforms other dynamic GRL schemes, for example achieving 9%, 7%, and 15% higher accuracy than - respectively - DyGFormer, TGN, and GraphMixer, for the MOOC dataset. Our design can be seamlessly extended towards other dynamic GRL workloads.

8. Plickers to Support Similarities Learning: An Experience on 7th Grade Portuguese Basic Education

- Abstract
There are several educational software (ES) used in the classroom environment for the teaching and learning of geometric contents that are part of the Portuguese basic education mathematics program. There are studies that show that the use of this type of artifact has a fundamental role in the behavior of students, raising, among other aspects, a greater motivation for learning mathematics. The aim of this work is to explore and describe implications for the behavior and learning of students in the 7th grade of Portuguese basic education, in face of a pedagogical practice that involves carrying out tasks using ES Plickers, in the theme similarities of the domain geometry and measurement, throughout intervention carried out. The adopted methodology presents characteristics of a quasi-experimental study. The participants were 61 students from three classes of a school in the north of Portugal, followed during eight consecutive classes. A set of tasks using Plickers, tests and a questionnaire survey were used as instruments for data collection. The results point to positive increments, at a behavioral level, as well as in the evolution of learning, in view of the use of this methodology in the classroom.

This article is an excerpt from a master's thesis developed in Brazil, in which we approach recurrent and linear sequences, given some intriguing particularities in their definitions and the scarcity of discussion of this topic in the literature of the History of Mathematics, especially with regard to its geometric representation. Thus, we aim to present the identities of Fibonacci, Lucas, Jacobsthal and Padovan in a three-dimensional visualization with the contribution of GeoGebra software. The research methodology chosen was bibliographical, exploratory in nature, where we have theoretical support in works such as Oliveira and Alves (2019), Silva (2017), Souza and Alves (2018), Vieira and Alves (2020). This research brings as results a set of geometric constructions of the identities of the proposed sequences, in three-dimensional perspective, being a support for future works developed around this theme. GeoGebra was essential in the process of constructing and visualizing the sequences, as it provided strategies for understanding the recurrence relations and the properties of the Fibonacci, Lucas, Jacobsthal and Padovan sequences, through the behavior of the visual representations of these identities.

BACKGROUND: Current techniques for donation after circulatory determination of death (DCD) heart procurement, through either direct procurement and machine perfusion or thoracoabdominal normothermic regional perfusion (NRP), have demonstrated excellent heart transplant outcomes. However, the impact of thoracoabdominal DCD (TA-DCD) heart procurement on liver allograft outcomes and utilization is poorly understood. METHODS: One hundred sixty simultaneous heart and liver DCD donors were identified using the United Network for Organ Sharing/Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network database between December 2019 and July 2021. Liver outcomes from TA-DCD donors were stratified by heart procurement technique and evaluated for organ utilization, graft survival, and patient survival. Results were compared with abdominal-only DCD (A-DCD; n = 1332) and donation after brain death (DBD; n = 12 891) liver transplants during the study interval. Kaplan-Meier methods with log-rank testing were used to evaluate patient and graft survival. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-three of 160 livers procured from TA-DCD donors proceeded to transplant. Abstract In the last two decades, an exponentially growing number of meta-analyses (MAs) synthesize thousands of peer-reviewed studies on the environmental impacts of farming practices (FPs). This paper describes the iMAP-FP evidence library, a comprehensive dataset on the effects of 34 categories of FPs (such as agronomic practices, cropping and livestock systems, land management options and mitigation techniques) on 34 impacts including climate mitigation, soil health, environmental pollution, water use, nutrients cycling, biodiversity, and agricultural productivity. Through systematic screening, 570 MAs published since 2000 were selected and categorized according to the type of FP. We assessed their impacts, the geographic regions covered, and their quality. We extracted 3,811 effects and their statistical significance associated with sustainable FPs (intervention) compared to a control (typically conventional agriculture) across 223 different intervention-control pairs. Our dataset is accompanied with an online free-access library, which includes a catalogue of synthetic reports summarizing the available evidence on each evaluated FP.

O presente trabalho aborda elementos de ordem histórica, epistemológica e matemática relacionados com os números de Narayana e a Sequência de Narayana. Ambas noções possuem raízes históricas condicionadas por um ponto de vista indiano de particular cultura matemática. Dessa forma, a partir de uma devida indicação de determinados fundamentos religiosos que, em maior ou em menor substancia, influenciam a produção de conhecimento e a sistematização das ideias matemáticas, o trabalho distingue a contribuição de dois matemáticos indianos Narayana Pandit (1340 - 1400) e Tadepalli Venkata Narayana (1930 - 1987) que contribuíram para a evolução de ambas as noções matemáticas e que, hodiernamente, podem ser vislumbradas pelo interesse de pesquisas atuais. Finalmente, o trabalho busca transmitir, de certa forma, os elementos evolutivos e da generalização de propriedades que confirmam um viés irrefreável evolutivo do conhecimento matemático.

Aerogel scaffolds are nanostructured materials with beneficial properties for tissue engineering applications. The tracing of the state of the aerogels after their implantation is challenging due to their variable biodegradation rate and the lack of suitable strategies capable of in vivo monitoring the scaffolds. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have emerged as advanced tools for in vitro bioimaging because of their fluorescence properties. In this work, highly fluorescent UCNPs were loaded into aerogels to obtain theranostic implants for tissue engineering and bioimaging applications. 3D-printed alginate-hydroxyapatite aerogels labeled with UCNPs were manufactured by 3D-printing and supercritical CO2 drying to generate personalize-to-patient aerogels. The physicochemical performance of the resulting structures was evaluated by printing fidelity measurements, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and different microscopies (confocal, transmission and scanning electron microscopies). Stability of the aerogels in terms of physicochemical properties was also tested after 3 years of storage. Biocompatibility was evaluated in vitro by different cell and hemocompatibility assays, in ovo and in vivo by safety and bioimaging studies using different murine models. Cytokines profile, tissue index and histological evaluations of the main organs unveiled an in vivo downregulation of the inflammation after implantation of the scaffolds. UCNPs-decorated aerogels were first-time manufactured and long-term traceable by fluorescence-based bioimaging until 3 weeks post-implantation, thereby endorsing their suitability as tissue engineering and theranostic nanodevices (i.e. bifunctional implants).

This chapter aims to provide a clear and understandable picture of constructive semigroups with apartness in Bishop's style of constructive mathematics, BISH. Our theory is partly inspired by the classical case, but it is distinguished from it in two significant aspects: we use intuitionistic logic rather than classical throughout; our work is based on the notion of apartness (between elements of the set, and, later, between elements and its subsets). Following Heyting, at least initially, classical semigroup theory is seen as a guide that helps us to develop the constructive theory of semigroups with apartness. To have a structure, we need a set, a relation, and rules establishing how we will put them together. Working within classical or intuitionistic logic, in order to analyze algebraic structures, it is necessary to start with study on sets and ordered sets, relational systems, etc. A comparative analysis between presented classical and constructive results is also a part of this chapter. 21. Mechanisms of Degradation of Collagen or Gelatin Materials (Hemostatic Sponges) in Oral Surgery: A Systematic Review

Objective: The goal of this systematic review was to identify the mechanisms associated with the enzymatic degradation of collagen and gelatin biomaterials and the possible associated flaws. Methods: Four databases (PubMed, B-On, Cochrane Library, and ResearchGate) were used for the bibliographic search of articles. The research question was formulated using the PCC method, (P): collagen or gelatin sponges, hydrogels, and scaffolds; concept (C): enzymatic degradation of collagen or gelatin sponges, hydrogels, and scaffolds; and context (C): effect of enzymatic action on degradation time of collagen or gelatin sponges, hydrogels, and scaffolds. The search was contextualized according to PRISMA recommendations. The identification and exclusion of evidence followed the PRISMA criteria, with specific inclusion and exclusion factors being stipulated for the selection of articles. The risk of bias assessment was performed using the QUIN Scale. Results: The initial search was composed of 13,830 articles after removing duplicates; 56 articles followed for the full-text reading; 45 were excluded; then, 11 articles were obtained, constituting the results of this systematic review. All studies evaluated the materials using gravimetric analysis, and collagenases were the proteases used for the degradation solution. The materials tested were as follows: human-like collagen (HLC) hydrogel with microbial transglutaminase (MTGase), gelatin sponges subjected to different types of crosslinking, and collagen scaffolds with different types of crosslinking. The period of analysis varied between 0.25 h and 35 days. It was possible to highlight the lack of uniformity in the protocols used, which varied largely, thus influencing the degradation times. The risk of bias was low in nine studies and medium in two studies. Conclusions: This systematic review identified a gap in the literature, highlighting the absence of in vitro studies using human saliva and a collagenase concentration close to the physiological levels to simulate oral dynamics. However, based on existing literature, the mechanisms associated with collagen enzymatic degradation in collagen and gelatin biomaterials were comprehensively understood, answering the first research question postulated. In response to the second research question, the main shortcomings identified in the laboratory evaluation of mechanisms associated with collagen enzymatic degradation in collagen and gelatin biomaterials included the lack of standardization in degradation test protocols; this limited inter-study comparisons, which increased heterogeneity. Additionally, variations in collagenase concentrations and types influenced collagen degradation rates, and inappropriate evaluation intervals hindered the identification of total degradation time.

22. Melanocytic cutaneous lesions in Sus ibericus, are these a cause for meat condemnation?

The Alentejano pig (Sus ibericus) is an autochthonous breed of swine from Portugal phylogenetically close to the Iberian breed that is known to develop melanocytic lesions. In this study, 34 melanocytic skin lesions were identified and collected from Alentejano pigs slaughtered for human consumption for further routine histologic assessment. The samples were classified into 4 age ranges: 1 (1 to 6 months), 2 (7 to 12 months) 3 (13 to 24 months), and 4 (more than 25 months). All the lesions were considered benign after the histopathological assessment, of which 52.9% and 47.1%, were classified as melanosis and melanocytomas, respectively. Regarding the age ranges, a statistical difference between the groups was observed, indicating that the probability of melanosis presentation was higher at the age range 4 and for melanocytomas at the age range 3. While no malignant lesions were observed in this study, it was concluded that benign melanocytic lesions are commonly found in Alentejano pig carcasses. Further research is necessary to accurately distinguish between malignant and benign lesions, which is crucial for official veterinarians to make decisions regarding meat approval or condemnation.

Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo identificar o Conhecimento Pedagógico do Conteúdo de quatro docentes universitários de Física de uma Universidade pública do Rio de Janeiro a partir de seus discursos sobre as práticas. Entende-se que na Educação Superior há diversas críticas em relação às práticas e à pedagogia dos professores que não tiveram formação que relacionasse conhecimentos pedagógicos aos conhecimentos do conteúdo. A pesquisa contou com referenciais ligados aos Saberes Docentes e ao PCK e com o referencial bakhtiniano para a Análise de Discurso, defendendo que as interações sociais influenciam os enunciados dos sujeitos. Dentre os resultados, nota-se a importância do domínio de conhecimentos específicos em estratégias pedagógicas para um ensino mais crítico e reflexivo, rompendo com uma educação que vise puramente transmissão de conteúdos, sem preocupação com o contexto sociocultural.

Abstract Future trajectories of agricultural productivity need to incorporate environmental targets, including the reduction of pesticides use. Landscape features supporting natural pest control (LF-NPC) offer a nature-based solution that can serve as a partial substitute for synthetic pesticides, thereby supporting future productivity levels. Here, we introduce a novel approach to quantify the contribution of LF-NPC to agricultural yields and its associated economic value to crop production in a broad-scale context. Using the European Union as case study, we combine granular farm-level data, a spatially explicit map of LF-NPC potential, and a regional agro-economic supply and market model. The results reveal that farms located in areas characterized by higher LF-NPC potential experience lower productivity losses in a context of reduced synthetic pesticides use. Our analysis suggests that LF-NPC reduces yield gaps on average by four percentage points, and increases income by a similar magnitude. These results highlight the significance of LF-NPC for agricultural production and income, and provide a valuable reference point for farmers and policymakers aiming to successfully invest in landscape features to achieve pesticides reduction targets.

Introdução: A pesquisa encontra o seu fundamento em factos científicos de artigos que discutem estratégias didáticas utilizadas no ensino e na aprendizagem do efeito fotoelétrico, tendo como base o uso das simulações computacionais. Objetivo: Desenvolver uma estratégia eficaz de utilização de simulações computacionais no ensino do tópico “efeito fotoelétrico” de modo a melhorar as aprendizagens dos alunos. Métodos: O estudo foi realizado numa Escola Secundária Pública localizada no distrito de Inharrime, a sul de Moçambique. Para a recolha de dados foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa e quantitativa, contando com a participação de uma amostra de quarenta (40) alunos do 12o ano do ensino médio, divididos em quatro turmas de dez alunos cada, sendo uma turma de controlo e as outras três de grupo experimental (onde foi aplicada a estratégia metodológica aqui proposta, baseada na realização das atividades laboratoriais seguidas da utilização de uma simulação computacional). Nas quatro turmas foi aplicado um pré-teste com o objetivo de avaliar o nível inicial de conhecimentos dos alunos, e um pós-teste para avaliar não só o contributo das atividades laboratoriais assim como da simulação computacional nas aprendizagens do tópico “efeito fotoelétrico”. Resultados: Os resultados deste estudo mostram que o uso de simulações computacionais associadas ou não com uma experiência laboratorial, contribui para uma aprendizagem mais eficaz sobre o tópico “efeito fotoelétrico”. Conclusão: De acordo com os resultados desta pesquisa, sugere-se a realização de uma experiência laboratorial aliada ao uso de simulações computacionais como uma alternativa para a prática pedagógica, uma vez que facilita a compreensão dos conteúdos por parte dos alunos, resultando em aprendizagens mais significativas.

A motivação para as reflexões feitas neste artigo surge com os movimentos crescentes de negação dos conhecimentos científicos, tema central proposto para o International Historical Philosophical Science Teaching Latin American (IHPSTLA) de 2023. Em um mundo marcado por grandes desigualdades sociais e desafios causados pela exploração ambiental capitalista, buscamos contribuir com potencialidades que o campo da História, Filosofia e Sociologia das Ciências pode trazer para o Ensino de Ciências nos enfrentamentos aos movimentos negacionistas. Partimos de abordagens de possíveis pontos de convergência entre os conhecimentos do povo Yanomami e os da Ciência ocidental, envolvendo cosmogenias hegemônicas e a desse povo originário, sem tratar as diferentes produções de conhecimento como únicas ou semelhantes. Entendemos que, ao valorizar outras cosmopercepções, promovemos um ensino com maior justiça social e que combate as violações aos direitos humanos desse povo vulnerabilizado. O conjunto de atividades aqui apresentado, e ainda em desenvolvimento em um curso de licenciatura em Física de uma Universidade pública do Rio de Janeiro, surgiu de um projeto mais amplo voltado para a formação inicial integrando Educação em Ciências e Educação em Direitos Humanos. Uma vez que a construção teórico-metodológica vem acontecendo de forma dinâmica e cíclica e que a proposta conta com a participação de todos os sujeitos envolvidos no processo, escolhemos a pesquisa-ação como referencial metodológico para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa. As atividades, desenvolvidas junto aos licenciandos, envolveram diálogo entre culturas, discussões sobre o papel das imagens e dos sonhos nas diferentes formas de produção de conhecimento e a elaboração de projetos pedagógicos como forma de avaliação. Nos projetos criados pelos estudantes, encontramos o reconhecimento de que as ações dos povos originários caminham para a preservação das condições de vida nas florestas e no planeta Terra de forma mais ampla. Como resultado, destacamos o surgimento de oportunidades pedagógicas trazidas pelo tema para discutir questões acerca da Natureza da Ciência, uma vez que o reconhecimento pelos alunos de conhecimentos diferentes do cientificamente aceito é obscurecido pela forma rígida como as metodologias científicas lhes são comumente apresentadas. Ressaltamos ainda que as relações entre conhecimentos de diferentes origens culturais para o Ensino de Ciências precisam ser aprofundadas e cada vez mais discutidas no âmbito da formação inicial e das práticas docentes.

A presente pesquisa apresenta uma ampliação da sequência de Leonardo, uma recorrência associada a um polinômio característico de grau 3, abrangendo agora as sequências de recorrências associadas a um polinômio característico de grau 4 (Tetra-Leonardo), recorrência associada a um polinômio característico de grau 5 (Penta-Leonardo) e recorrência associada a um polinômio característico de grau 6 (Hexa-Leonardo). Além disso, investiga-se minuciosamente as representações matriciais e as funções geradoras desses números, o que representa uma significativa contribuição matemática para o campo das sequências de Leonardo. No contexto de trabalhos futuros, almeja-se a aplicação dessas sequências no âmbito do ensino, possibilitando discussões mais aprofundadas em cursos de formação inicial de professores de Matemática. Isso tem o potencial de enriquecer o conteúdo pedagógico e promover uma compreensão mais sólida de sequências matemáticas entre os futuros educadores.

29. Molecular classification of endometrial cancer: preliminary experience from a single Portuguese academic center

BackgroundSince the seminal publication of the TCGA consortium in 2013, the molecular classification of endometrial cancer has been widely accepted as a new and powerful tool to better understand the natural history of this malignancy. Adoption of routine molecular classification around the world has been limited. We sought to demonstrate our initial experience in incorporating the four molecular subtypes for endometrioid carcinomas.MethodsThis was a retrospective analysis at a single center in Portugal. Molecular classification was determined using immunohistochemical staining for MMR and p53 and Sanger Sequencing to determine POLE mutation status as per published PROMISE method. Descriptive statistics were reported.Results20 patients with endometrioid histology were included. Median age of the cohort was 64 years (range 45–76). Median Body Mass Index (kg/m2) was 29.81 (range 21.3–43.1). In terms of tumor grading, 16 (80%) of the endometrial carcinomas of the cohort were low-grade (either grade 1 or grade 2). 16 (80%) of the cases were FIGO stage I. Regarding the molecular classification the tumors were classified as: MMRd [n = 6 (30%)]; p53 abn [n = 2 (10%)]; NSMP (n = 10 (50%)), POLE ultramut [n = 2 (10%)].ConclusionDespite the small sample size, we were able to show that molecular classification is feasible. To our knowledge this is the first cohort of endometroid endometrial carcinomas fully characterized according to the TCGA classification in Portugal, from one single center.

ABSTRACT Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that has emerged as a major public health threat due to the increased incidence of its drug resistance. S. aureus presents a remarkable capacity to adapt to different niches due to the plasticity of its energy metabolism. In this work, we investigated the energy metabolism of S. aureus, focusing on the alternative NADH:quinone oxidoreductases, NDH-2s. S. aureus presents two genes encoding NDH-2s (NDH-2A and NDH-2B) and lacks genes coding for Complex I, the canonical respiratory NADH:quinone oxidoreductase. This observation makes the action of NDH-2s crucial for the regeneration of NAD+ and, consequently, for the progression of metabolism. Our study involved the comprehensive biochemical characterization of NDH-2B and the exploration of the cellular roles of NDH-2A and NDH-2B, utilizing knockout mutants (Δndh-2a and Δndh-2b). We show that NDH-2B uses NADPH instead of NADH, does not establish a charge-transfer complex in the presence of NADPH, and its reduction by this substrate is the catalytic rate-limiting step. In the case of NDH-2B, the reduction of the flavin is inherently slow, and we suggest the establishment of a charge transfer complex between NADP+ and FADH2, as previously observed for NDH-2A, to slow down quinone reduction and, consequently, prevent the overproduction of reactive oxygen species, which is potentially unnecessary. Furthermore, we observed that the lack of NDH-2A or NDH-2B impacts cell growth, volume, and division differently. The absence of these enzymes results in distinct metabolic phenotypes, emphasizing the unique cellular roles of each NDH-2 in energy metabolism.IMPORTANCEStaphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen, posing a global challenge in clinical medicine due to the increased incidence of its drug resistance. For this reason, it is essential to explore and understand the mechanisms behind its resistance, as well as the fundamental biological features such as energy metabolism and the respective players that allow S. aureus to live and survive. Despite its prominence as a pathogen, the energy metabolism of S. aureus remains underexplored, with its respiratory enzymes often escaping thorough investigation. S. aureus bioenergetic plasticity is illustrated by its ability to use different respiratory enzymes, two of which are investigated in the present study. Understanding the metabolic adaptation strategies of S. aureus to bioenergetic challenges may pave the way for the design of therapeutic approaches that interfere with the ability of the pathogen to successfully adapt when it invades different niches within its host.

IntroductionWest Africa, particularly Guinea-Bissau, heavily relies on cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale L.) production, which significantly impacts the countries’ economies. Cashew exhibits remarkable adaptability to impoverished and arid soils. Understanding producers’ socio-economic characteristics is crucial due to their potential influence on crop productivity and household income.MethodsThis study aims to characterize the socio-economic, productive, and phytosanitary aspects of cashew production in Guinea-Bissau, through 151 interviews with producers across all administrative regions of the country.ResultsOur findings reveal that cashew producers are mainly males aged 40 to 60, they typically manage plantations under 5 ha, with the smaller plantation areas located in Gabú, Cacheu, and Bolama. The age of the older trees averaged 31 years, with the highest age found in Biombo. Tree density averaged 286 trees per hectare, with higher values in Cacheu, Bafatá, and Bolama. Cashew nut yield in 2020 averaged less than 0.5 tons per hectare, with farmer-set prices generally lower than government determined prices. Oio, Tombali, and Bolama were the regions most affected by pests, while Oio and Cacheu (North) were the most affected by diseases. Top pests included termites, branch girdler, weaver ants, African grasshopper, and stem borer; while top diseases comprised gummosis, anthracnose, and dieback.DiscussionCharacterization of cashew production system is crucial at both national and regional levels to identify region-specific limitations and strengths, aiding in the formulation of tailored strategies for sustainable production. Moreover, cashew production plays a crucial role in household incomes in Guinea-Bissau, underscoring the necessity of developing integrated management strategies.

Abstract A systematic review was conducted to determine the trends in devices and parameters used for brain photobiomodulation (PBM). The revised studies included clinical and cadaveric approaches, in which light stimuli were applied to the head and/or neck. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases were used for the systematic search. A total of 2133 records were screened, from which 97 were included in this review. The parameters that were extracted and analysed in each article were the device design, actuation area, actuation site, wavelength, mode of operation, power density, energy density, power output, energy per session and treatment time. To organize device information, 11 categories of devices were defined, according to their characteristics. The most used category of devices was laser handpieces, which relate to 21% of all devices, while 28% of the devices were not described. Studies for cognitive function and physiological characterisation are the most well defined ones and with more tangible results. There is a lack of consistency when reporting PBM studies, with several articles under defining the stimulation protocol, and a wide variety of parameters used for the same health conditions (e.g., Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease) resulting in positive outcomes. Standardization for the report of these studies is warranted, as well as sham-controlled comparative studies to determine which parameters have the greatest effect on PBM treatments for different neurological conditions.

The red reflex test, performed using a direct ophthalmoscope, serves as a critical diagnostic tool in identifying various ocular conditions. These conditions encompass retinal anomalies (such as retinoblastoma, Coats disease, retinopathy of prematurity, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, myelinated nerve fibers, ocular toxocariasis, ocular toxoplasmosis, retinochoroidal coloboma, astrocytic, and combined hamartoma), vitreous abnormalities (including persistent fetal vasculature), lens issues (like cataract), anterior chamber and corneal conditions (comprising dysgenesis of the anterior segment, congenital glaucoma, birth trauma), and tear film disturbances. During this examination, the presence of leukocoria, characterized by a white pupillary reflex, can suggest the presence of underlying conditions. Any suspicion of an abnormal red reflex test warrants immediate evaluation by a qualified ophthalmologist. This article primarily underscores the paramount importance of the red reflex examination, not only to identify potential sight-threateningbut also life-threatening conditions. It delves into the most common causes of leukocoria in childhood and offers insights into a comprehensive diagnostic approach. The target audience for this article includes pediatricians, primary care clinicians, and ophthalmologists, all of whom play a pivotal role in the early detection and intervention of these critical eye disorders.

A ordem tributária portuguesa reconheceu, tradicionalmente, duas espécies principais de tributos, a saber: os impostos e as taxas públicas – perfeitamente destrinçáveis pela sua natureza unilateral ou sinalagmática / comutativa. Desde 1997, porém, que esta dicotomia tradicional foi abalada com criação de uma terceira espécie tributária, denominada pela CRP de “demais contribuições financeiras” onde se tem vinda a incluir um conjunto de realidades tributárias de sinalagmaticidade variável, nem sempre objetiva nem imediata. Neste estudo analisam-se os problemas emergentes da criação desta terceira espécie de tributos face à dogmática mais tradicional da política pública tributária, sobretudo como consequência da falta de uma dogmática estável onde, não raro, se questionam os respetivos limites constitucionais e principiológicos. Propõe-se a adoção de medidas que garantam que esta nova espécie de tributos respeita os ditames constitucionais e os racionais mais estruturantes da política pública tributária, no respeito pelos legítimos interesses dos cidadãos contribuintes, como forma de, pelo menos, mitigar abusos na sua utilização. Concluímos que é necessária uma definição concetual mais apurada da figura das contribuições financeiras, que as diferencie de outros tributos. Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.
