1. Polysaccharides and Lectins: A Natural Complementary Approach against the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic

Abstract

Infection with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the cause of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has emerged as a global pandemic, with a high toll on casualties, economic impact, and human lifestyle. Despite the recent approval of various vaccines against the virus, challenges remain, including the limited availability of these vaccines, the prevalent rejection of vaccination by a large proportion of the population, and the recurrent appearance of new variants of the virus due to mutations. This context raises the alarm for scientists and clinicians to seek alternative and complementary therapies. In this context, natural products and their derivatives serve as reservoirs for potential therapeutic compounds that can be exploited in the research and production of antiviral drugs against COVID-19. Among these substances, lectin and polysaccharides isolated from fauna and flora emerge as complementary strategies for treating coronavirus infection. The review objective is to cover and analyze the specific role of polysaccharides and lectins and their synergy in the fight against this deadly SARS-CoV-2 virus. For this purpose, a primary literature search was conducted on Google Scholar, PubMed, and Web of Sciences using relevant keywords like “SARS-CoV-2 Variants”; “Antiviral Strategies”; “Antiviral Polysaccharides”; “Antiviral Lectins”; and “Synergistic effect”. The results demonstrate that lectins and polysaccharides exhibit antiviral activities against SARS-CoV-2 via mechanisms related to binding and steric blocking, the binding of glycan-based decoys, chemical reactions, virus particle disruption strategies, and steric blocking for competitive inhibition to block SARS-CoV-2 and its variants’ entry. In addition, this review analyzes the rationale behind combining polysaccharides and lectins, emphasizing complementary mechanisms of action. By simultaneously targeting multiple stages of the viral life cycle, this dual strategy aims to comprehensively inhibit viral propagation and enhance the durability of antiviral strategies over time.

Abstract

Imaging evaluation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has evolved significantly in last decades. Even if the modern imaging technics like ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging have unequivocal place in the assessment of early disease (especially for synovial inflammation, bone oedema, erosions), radiographic evaluation of hands and feet is still the most widely used imaging technic for quantification of joint damage in RA. In the current review we aim to address some practical issues related to the radiographic evaluation in RA from daily practice perspective, followed by a broader approach from the clinical trials point of view.

3. Variability of patient and physician global assessment on visual analogue and Likert scales in rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract

Objective. The study aimed to observe the variability of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity scores according to the type of patient global assessment (PtGA) and to compare these subjective assessments with objective measurements. Methods. Prospective study in which RA patients four types of assessments in the same day of their inclusion in the study: completing a questionnaire (including PtGA on a 100 mm visual analogue scale – VAS, and a 0-10 Likert scale), clinical interview and joint examination performed by each attending rheumatologist and peripheral venous blood sampling for acute phase reactants. Results. The study included 110 RA patients (57.5 years average age, 9.4 years median disease duration, 90.0% women, 58.2% in remission or low disease activity). There was low concordance and agreement between PtGA and physician global assessment (PhGA): the two evaluations were significantly but poorly correlated, and in 71.8% of cases VAS and Likert PtGA were higher than PhGA with at least 2 points in average. Patients with no tender or swollen joints (27.3%) reported a median VAS-PtGA of 27 cm and a median Likert-PtGA of 4.2 points. Likert-PtGA were higher than VAS-PtGA in the general sample and for patients with normal objective measures (patients in remission according to DAS28-3v-CRP reported a median VAS-PtGA of 5 points, compared to VAS-PtGA of only 2.2 cm). The strongest correlations of PtGA on both VAS and Likert scales were recorded for mHAQ (r = 0.521 and 0.589, p < 0.001), DAS28-3v-CRP (r = 0.419 and 0.422, p < 0.001) and the presence of prolonged morning stiffness (r = 0.361 and 0.485, p < 0.001). Conclusion. Romanian patients with RA seem to favour and understand the Likert scale better than the VAS when reporting PtGA.

The focus of this update is to emphasize the recent advances in the pathogenesis and various molecular key approaches associated with myopia in order to reveal new potential therapeutic targets. We review the current evidence for its complex genetics and evaluate the known or candidate genes and loci. In addition, we discuss recent investigations regarding the role of environmental factors. This paper also covers current research aimed at elucidating the signaling pathways involved in the pathogenesis of myopia.

5. VOLUMIZING HYALURONIC ACID FILLER AS TEMPORARY TISSUE EXPANDER IN LOWER EYELID CICATRICIAL ECTROPION

Abstract

We describe the treatment of lower eyelid cicatricial ectropion in a 24 year old male using volumizing hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. One milliliter of Juvéderm Voluma was injected directly under the skin in each lower eyelid to create a large bubble. The filler was dissolved with hyaluronidase (750 I.U. / side) 5 months later, achieving an excellent and stable functional and cosmetic result. There was a 2.4 mm improvement in MRD-2 with the filler in place which decreased to 1.72 mm at 6 months after filler dissolution with hyaluronidase. This resulted in complete resolution of the signs and symptoms of corneal exposure. To date, there have been reports of low density HA injection for the treatment of cicatricial ectropion in elderly patients as well as infants with lamellar ichthyosis. In these cases the HA was injected and left in place to dissolve itself. Our case is the first report of a HA with high G’ properties injected directly under the skin followed by complete dissolution with hyaluronidase once the tissue expansion took place.

Abstract

Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is an important tool in the diagnosis, evaluation and follow up of glaucoma patients. Even if we are dealing with a primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) or a primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patient, the mechanism of angle closure can be revealed by performing an UBM. The device can help differentiate between the two types of glaucoma even in patients with opaque corneas when gonioscopy cannot be performed. Knowing the type of glaucoma is vital, especially regarding an individualized treatment, since each patient is unique and needs to be treated accordingly, in order to prevent glaucomatous optic neuropathy and visual field loss. Imaging evaluation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has evolved significantly in last decades. Even if the modern imaging technics like ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging have unequivocal place in the assessment of early disease (especially for synovial inflammation, bone oedema, erosions), radiographic evaluation of hands and feet is still the most widely used imaging technic for quantification of joint damage in RA. In the current review we aim to address some practical issues related to the radiographic evaluation in RA from daily practice perspective, followed by a broader approach from the clinical trials point of view.

Abstract

Background: Despite the fact that keratoconus has been tipically defined as a noninflammatory condition, recent research has promoted the role of inflammatory factors and protein changes of tear film in disease progression. Aims: to determine the level of serum albumin, lactoferrin and lyzozyme in tears of keratoconic patients and their correlations with corneal biomechanical properties. Subjects and methods: 16 eyes of keratoconus patients and 14 eyes of control cases were enrolled in an observational prospective study. We performed a complete ophthalmological examination on all participants. In order to determine the concentration of tear film proteins, a minimum of 20 microlitres of tears from the lower conjunctival fornix were collected from each subject and measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis. Results: The level of lactoferrin measured in the tear film was significantly decreased in the keratoconus group compared to the normal subjects in all cases (p Conclusions: We can state that the protein composition of tears is modified in keratoconus by increased levels of protein with inflammatory properties such as albumin or by decreased levels of protein with anti-inflammatory properties such as lactoferrin.

Abstract

Keratoconus is a progressive ectatic disorder characterised by irregular myopic astigmatism and loss of visual acuity due to corneal thinning. Corneal collagen crosslinking is the treatment recognised to stop the progression of keratoconus. Our study evaluates and compares visibility and depth of the stromal demarcation line after corneal collagen crosslinking using anterior segment optical coherence tomography between two groups:crosslinking with dextran-based and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-based riboflavin solutions. Our work proved a better visibility and a deeper demarcation line when we used HPMC-based riboflavin. Also the study revealed that HPMC-based riboflavin is associated with better biomechanical outcomes than dextran-based riboflavin.

Abstract

Glaucoma represents the main cause of irreversible blindness in the world and for this consideration, the interest in a quick and precise diagnosis and progression of the disease, prior to the appearance of irreversible damage, has been continuously rising. Glaucoma risk factors are already well known, but current studies reveal that it is necessary to make a proper analysis of the intraocular pressure (IOP) to obtain an accurate diagnosis, so we must take into consideration corneal properties that might affect IOP measurements. Starting from corneal geometrical properties represented by central corneal thickness (CCT) and continuing with biomechanical properties represented by corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) we reviewed the value of investigating corneal properties in ocular hypertension (OH), primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG) patients. We can now say that CCT plays an important role in diagnosing glaucoma because it may mask the real value of the IOP and also, in setting the target for the IOP needed to stop disease progression. Also, CH is a factor that needs to be screened from the first consult of a glaucoma patient or suspect because it is correlated to the response to treatment, visual field (VF) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) progression and could anticipate the future evolution and patients prognosis. Both CCT and CH are factors that must be thought-about when we encounter a glaucoma suspect. CCT has a predictive role in OH and NTG patients, while CH has on the other hand a prognostic role in POAG, OH and NTG patients.

Abstract

Ultrasound is a fundamental tool used in all medical specialties, including ophthalmology. Nowadays, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), a method with higher resolution, allows the investigation of in vivo details of the anterior segment of the eye at microscopic resolution. The examination is especially useful in patients with secondary glaucoma that involves a lens component such as phacomorphic glaucoma and occult phacomorphic glaucoma (OPG). The purpose of this paper was to familiarize audience with UBM and the importance of this investigation in OPG, by presenting a series of cases in which performing an UBM was vital because it provided the information needed in order to safely accomplish a curative surgical treatment that preserved our patients' visual acuity.

Abstract

We describe in this paper the synthesis of two glycolipids containing a mannosyl residue functionalized with malonic acid and azide groups at the C6 position. Two synthetic routes have been successfully implemented: the first one involves Schmidt’s glycosylation procedure using functionalized carbohydrates, whereas the second one involves nucleophilic substitutions in the C6 position of an iodinated intermediate obtained using Koenigs-Knorr reaction. A comparative discussion of reactions and yields is realized. The two glycolipids served as material for the preparation of liposomes.

Abstract

Aim: to determine the values of biomechanical parameters (corneal hysteresis - CH, corneal resistance factor - CRF and keratoconus match index - KMI) in patients with keratoconus and their first degree family members. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the importance of assessing corneal biomechanics in subjects at risk of developing the primary ectasia. Materials and methods: 48 participants divided into three groups were analyzed in an observational study after a complete ophthalmological exam with the primary focus on Ocular Response Analyzer. Results: The mean values of CH, CRF, and KMI in the group of relatives were lower compared with the controls but higher when compared with keratoconus patients. We noted significant differences of CH and CRF between all three groups, while in the case of KMI, only the keratoconus group presented statistically significant differences compared with the relatives, respectively with the healthy subjects. Conclusions: the decreased values of CH and CRF may raise the question whether corneal biomechanics could be an adjuvant tool in the screening of a first-degree family member of a keratoconus patient in the attempt of the early detection of a possible forme fruste keratoconus.

Abstract

Glaucoma is known as an optic neuropathy prone to progression that determines characteristic not only structural (loss of the ganglion cells as well as their axons) but also functional defects (visual field loss). Objective: To evaluate the possibility of applying ganglion cell complex analysis (GCC) in patients who associate ocular hypertension with tilted disc and marked peripapillary atrophy. Methods: In order to evaluate its components, GCC can be investigated using the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) revealing: ganglion cell layer (cells bodies), inner plexiform layer (dendrites and synapses), and nerve fiber layer (axons). Our study included 196 eyes divided into 3 groups: 52 diagnosed with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), 63 with ocular hypertension (OH), and 81 healthy (normal) eyes (NE). Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new challenges in managing neurological conditions, particularly among athletes. This paper explores the intersection of post-COVID-19 neurological syndrome (PCNS/PASC) and post-concussion syndrome (PCS), focusing on their implications in sports medicine. Our analysis covers the symptomatology, pathophysiology, and management strategies for PCNS/PASC and PPCS, with special attention paid to the unique challenges faced by athletes recovering from these conditions, including the risk of symptom exacerbation and prolonged recovery. Key findings reveal that both PCNS/PASC and PPCS present with overlapping symptoms such as cognitive difficulties, exercise intolerance, and mental health issues, but differ in specific manifestations like anosmia and ageusia, unique to COVID-19. Pathophysiological analysis reveals similarities in blood–brain barrier disruption (BBB) but differences in the extent of immune activation. Management strategies emphasize a gradual increase in physical activity, close symptom monitoring, and psychological support, with a tailored approach for athletes. Specific interventions include progressive aerobic exercises, resistance training, and cognitive rehabilitation. Furthermore, our study highlights the importance of integrating neurology, psychiatry, physical therapy, and sports medicine to develop comprehensive care strategies. Our findings underscore the dual challenge of COVID-19 and concussion in athletes, necessitating a nuanced, interdisciplinary approach to effective management. Future research should focus on the long-term neurological effects of both conditions and optimizing treatment protocols to improve patient outcomes. This comprehensive understanding is crucial for advancing the management of athletes affected by these overlapping conditions and ensuring their safe return to sports.

Abstract

Background Little is known about the incidence of severe critical events in children undergoing general anaesthesia in Europe. We aimed to identify the incidence, nature, and outcome of severe critical events in children undergoing anaesthesia, and the associated potential risk factors. Methods The APRICOT study was a prospective observational multicentre cohort study of children from birth to 15 years of age undergoing elective or urgent anaesthesia for diagnostic or surgical procedures. Children were eligible for inclusion during a 2-week period determined prospectively by each centre. There were 261 participating centres across 33 European countries. The primary endpoint was the occurence of perioperative severe critical events requiring immediate intervention. A severe critical event was defined as the occurrence of respiratory, cardiac, allergic, or neurological complications requiring immediate intervention and that led (or could have led) to major disability or death. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01878760. Findings Between April 1, 2014, and Jan 31, 2015, 31 127 anaesthetic procedures in 30 874 children with a mean age of 6·35 years (SD 4·50) were included. The incidence of perioperative severe critical events was 5·2% (95% CI 5·0–5·5) with an incidence of respiratory critical events of 3·1% (2·9–3·3). Cardiovascular instability occurred in 1·9% (1·7–2·1), with an immediate poor outcome in 5·4% (3·7–7·5) of these cases. The all-cause 30-day in-hospital mortality rate was 10 in 10 000. Abstract

BACKGROUND Glaucoma is a major cause of irreversible visual field (VF) loss across the world. Many studies have assessed the accuracy of glaucoma diagnostic tests for a more precise diagnosis to quickly identify patients with higher risk of progression. MATERIAL AND METHODS We conducted a study that included 214 eyes divided into 3 groups: 79 eyes from patients diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), 68 eyes from patients diagnosed with ocular hypertension (OH), and 67 eyes from normal individuals (normal eyes, NE). All patients included in the study received a complete checkup. RESULTS In POAG patients, means of central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), mean defect (MD), visual field index (VFI), peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), and ganglion cell complex (GCC) are lower than in OH patients, and in NE are higher than in both groups. Also, we found a statistically significant direct correlation between CH and GCC thickness. Further statistical analysis revealed that both pRNFL thickness and GCC thickness are significantly influenced by CH value in a precise manner. CONCLUSIONS The first cell type affected in glaucoma is the retinal ganglion cell. We found a positive correlation between GCC thickness and CH, suggesting that CH might be a parameter to consider in the evaluation of all glaucoma patients from their first examination. Moreover, both pRNFL thickness and GCC thickness are influenced by CH, suggesting the utility of monitoring the value of CH at every checkup to detect its decrease in glaucoma patients.

Abstract

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy that affects the ganglion cell complex in all its components: cell bodies, dendrites, and axons, the dendritic arbor being the first one damaged. This is the reason why the thickness of the ganglion cell and internal plexiform layers can be taken into account as an early predictor of the glaucomatous changes, along with the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. However, due to disc tilting and peripapillary atrophy, the RNFL evaluation may be prone to errors in myopic patients. We presented the cases of two myopic patients, who, after a routine examination, were identified as glaucoma suspects. The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan revealed a nerve fiber loss which was not confirmed by the ganglion cell complex scan. Thereafter we manually adjusted the optic disc margins according to the patients' myopic changes and this time the retinal nerve fiber layer was also normal. We observed that the ganglion cell complex evaluation led to fewer errors than the retinal nerve fiber layer evaluation, particularly in front of a myopic patient. Nevertheless, various investigations should be considered in the attempt to issue a diagnosis of glaucoma.

Abstract

Keratoconus is a progressive corneal ectasia that may lead to severe visual impairment due to the irregular astigmatism caused by corneal thinning. In addition to its association with atopy, eye rubbing, or genetic component, late reports suggest the involvement of inflammation in the pathogenesis of the disease. Our aim was to determine the concentration of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, RANTES, IFN gamma, and TNF alpha in the tear film of patients with keratoconus and their first degree family members. We analyzed forty-eight participants in an observational cross-sectional study. The diagnosis of keratoconus had to be confirmed in addition to a minimum of 47 D corneal refractive power by corneal topography readings provided by a Placido-based topography system and analysis of the pattern: irregular astigmatism with an asymmetric “bow-tie.” As for the other groups, the most important diagnosis criteria were a normal topographic pattern with a regular astigmatism. 17 keratoconus patients, 16 relatives, and 15 controls were recruited after clinical assessment as part of the research. The cytokine’s mean values were similar in the keratoconus group and the relatives’ samples but significantly higher compared to the controls. Important differences were found in IL-4 levels between keratoconus patients and relatives and between relatives and controls (mean difference of 302.42, p<0.0016 and 219.16, p<0.033, Tukey’s HSD procedure). In the keratoconus group, using the CORR procedure, we found statistically strong correlations of IL-6 lacrimal concentrations with the disease stage (r=0.56, p<0.01), keratometry (r=0.55, p<0.02), pachymetry (r=−0.64, p<0.048), and corneal hysteresis (r=−0.53, p<0.02). Cytokine overexpression may be relevant for the inflammatory etiology of keratoconus. In conclusion, in the case of some first degree family members, the elevated tear biomarkers may represent a supplementary risk factor.

Abstract

Oxidative stress, arising from an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, contributes significantly to oral cancer such as oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) initiation, promotion, and progression. ROS, generated both internally and externally, induce cellular damage including DNA mutations and lipid peroxidation, fostering oncogene activation and carcinogenesis. The objective of this review was to cover and analyze the interplay between ROS and antioxidants, influencing the key processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis, shaping the trajectory of OSCC development. Despite the promise of antioxidants to halt cancer progression and mitigate oxidative damage, their therapeutic efficacy remains debated. The conducted literature search highlighted potential biomarkers that indicate levels of oxidative stress, showing promise for the early detection and monitoring of OSCC. Furthermore, melatonin has emerged as a promising adjunct therapy for OSCC, exerting antioxidant and oncostatic effects by modulating tumor-associated neutrophils and inhibiting cancer cell survival and migration. In addition, this review aims to shed light on developing personalized therapeutic strategies for patients with OSCC such as melatonin therapy, which will be discussed. Research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications of oxidative stress modulation in the context of oral cancer.

26. P29 Cow's milk allergy from theory to practice – a prospective analysis

Abstract

BACKGROUND Cow`s milk allergy is among the most common food allergy in children. It may be defined as a reproducible adverse reaction of an immunological nature induced by cow`s milk protein. The undergoing mechanism can be Ig E mediated with immediate onset and non IgE mediated or delayed onset type. The prevalence is between 1,8% and 7,5% of infants during the first year of life. With evidence of increasing food allergy prevalence and more persistent disease, it has become vital to improve the management of CM allergy. The ability to tolerate backed milk such as in muffins or cake has been associated with an increased chance of tolerance development. Exposing milk proteins to high temperatures through baking reduces allergenicity by destroying conformational epitopes. The whey proteins in cow milk, such as alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin, contain conformational epitopes that are heat labile (significantly reduced after 20 min of boiling), whereas casein contains mostly sequential and heat resistant epitopes. Methods Design From January to December 2016, 91 children between 0–3 years were referred to allergy department of which 35 (38.46%) with suspected IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction to cow’s milk protein.The allergy workup by skin prick testing, IgE levels confirmed the diagnose in 21 children (23%). For oral challenge tests were selected only 12 cases, wich have had negative result for casein both in skin prick test and sIgE in order to decrease the immediate risc Allergy Evaluation Skin prick test was performed according to previously published methods using single test device (Stallergenes) and commercially prepared extracts (Lopharma,Italy). Control tests for skin prick test were performed with histamine (positive control) and normal saline (negative control). All the subjects have had the skin prick test and sIgE measured at the time of oral challenge. Oral challenge Baked milk challenges were performed as open challenge under physician supervision in outpatient conditions. The muffins were baked in safe conditions as per protocol. Each muffin contained 1,3 grams of milk protein. The muffins were backed at 180°C for 30 min. The oral food challenge started with few crumble under the tongue and afterwards increasing increments every 15 min totaling with 2 muffins at the end of challenge wich corresponds to 2,6 grams of milk protein. Subjects were monitored throughout and 2 hours after challenge. Results Twelve children (median age 2,95 years, range 1,8–7 years) underwent food challenges to baked milk – muffin. Ten children (83,33%) passed the baked milk challenge and two (16,66%) failed. We have found approximately the same data in the literature. No differences were found between genders. The childrens how have failed the challenge didn`t have preexisting atopic conditions (asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, eczema). Skin prick test for alpha lactalbumin (median 0, range 0–10) and sIgE could not be correlated (P = – 0,233), but we found a moderate correlation between skin prick test for betalactoglobulin (median 1,5 range 0–8) and the sIgE for betalactoglobulin (p=0,05). Oral food challenge failure Two children, subject 8 and 10 have failed the oral challenge. No child who failed developed anaphylaxis or required epinephrine. Subject 8–3,8 years passed the initial clinic challenge to muffins (2,6 grams) and she continued consuming at home. In the day 3 after challenge she developed rhinoreea followed by nose congestion and periorbitar angioedema symptoms appeared 10 min after half a muffin. The subject was treated at home with oral antihistamines. Subject 10–7 years also passed the initial clinic challenge to muffins (2,6 grams). At home he continued to eat 2 muffins/day. The family reported a mild erythematous eruption over the trunk, raising the anxiety of the family so they decided to discontinue the introduction of cow milk protein. Discussion Cow`s milk allergy is the most common food allergy among children. The ability to tolerate baked milk, such as in cake or muffin, has been associated with an increased chance of tolerance development. Being able to add baked milk into diet can also increase quality of life by expending the diet, boosting nutrition, and promoting inclusion in social activities. To date, reliable markers for selecting subjects for baked milk challenge have not been clearly established. Therefore oral challenge to baked milk remains the gold standard. We found 83,33% of milk allergic children have passed the oral food challenge, wereas 16.66% have failed. We found no correlation between the skin prick test and sIgE for alfa-lactalbumina and moderate correlation between the skin prick test and sIgE for betalactoglobulin. Abstract

A new azoester, 4-(4-chloro-phenyldiazenyl)-2,6-dimethyl-phenyl 2-furoate (CPPF), has been synthesized by condensing 4-(4-chloro-phenylazo)-2,6-dimethyl-phenol with 2-furoyl chloride in pyridine. This compound has been characterized by elemental analysis (C, H, N), FTIR, UV–Vis, NMR (1H and 13C), and thermal analysis studies. Spectral analysis results confirmed the structure of the compound synthesized. Thermal analysis established that CPPF is stable up to 260 °C; melts at about 178 °C; and between 260 and 450 °C, it decomposes in two steps.

Abstract

Aminophylline (AMF) was studied as corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 1.0 mol L−1 HCl solution using electrochemical measurements associated with UV–Vis spectrophotometry and optical microscopy. Simultaneous thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry analysis was performed in order to determine the temperature range in which AMF is an effective inhibitor, without the decomposition risk that could change the inhibition mechanism. Thermal behaviour restricts AMF application as corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 1.0 mol L−1 HCl solution at temperatures ≤45 °C where there are no significant modifications of the adsorption mechanism. According to the results of electrochemical measurements, in association with UV–Vis spectrophotometry and optical microscopy techniques, AMF is a mixed-type inhibitor for carbon steel corrosion in 1.0 mol L−1 HCl solution, simultaneously suppressing the anodic and cathodic processes and acting via spontaneous physisorption on the metal surfaces.

Abstract

The thermal stability and the adsorption properties have been investigated for three benzothiazole compounds: 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide (NCBSA), and 2,2′-dibenzothiazole disulphide (BTD), reported in our early studies as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in different media. The electrochemical results were used to calculate the degree of surface coverage (θ). The adsorption mechanism of the three inhibitors was discussed according to the free energy of adsorption ( $$ \Delta G_{{\text{ads}}}^{\circ } $$ ) value obtained from Temkin adsorption isotherm, this being the best way to quantitatively express the adsorption process of their molecules on carbon steel surface. Thus, a mixed type mechanism involving the synergism between physisorption and chemisorption was proposed. The thermal analysis curves showed that, for the occurred events up to 470 °C, mass losses take place with endothermic effects followed by the total oxidation of the residue with an exothermic effect around 520 °C. Abstract

The poly-hematoxylin films undoped (p-HX) and doped with strontium (p-HX-Sr) were prepared on the platinum electrodes (Pt) using cyclic voltammetry. The influence of experimental parameters, such as: anodic potential and number of voltammetric cycles on the films synthesis was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed that, the optimal conditions to obtain the poly-hematoxylin films on platinum electrode from 10−2 mol L−1 NaNO3 solution, were found by recording 10 voltammetric cycles at an anodic potential of 1.5 V. Electrocatalytic activity of the poly-hematoxylin-platinum (p-HX/Pt) and poly-hematoxylin-strontium-platinum (p-HX-Sr/Pt) electrodes was tested for electrochemical degradation of benzocaine using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder with progressive stromal thinning and transformation of the normal corneal architecture towards ectasia that results in decreased vision due to irregular astigmatism and irreversible tissue scarring. The pathogenesis of keratoconus still remains unclear. Hypotheses that this condition has an inflammatory etiopathogenetic component apart from the genetic and environmental factors are beginning to escalate in the research domain. This paper covers the most relevant and recent published papers regarding the biomarkers of inflammation, their signaling pathway, and the potentially new therapeutic options in keratoconus.

Abstract

Purpose: We present the clinical, paraclinical and therapeutic features in a patient with secondary congenital aphakia. Methods: A 2-year-old patient, diagnosed with congenital rubella syndrome including sensorineural deafness, congenital heart disease, intellectual disability, microcephaly, microphthalmia, and congenital cataract, presented to our clinic for the surgical treatment of cataract. Results: During the surgery, the absence of the lens’ cortex was observed, hence, the final diagnose was of secondary congenital aphakia. Surgery was then continued with a posterior capsulorhexis and an anterior vitrectomy, deciding to postpone the implantation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens.

Abstract

Using the Williamson method, a new dye 4-[(4-chlorobenzyl)oxy]-3,4′-dichloroazobenzene (CODA) with liquid crystalline properties was synthesized. The structure and the thermal behavior of CODA were investigated by means of nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and light polarized optical microscopy techniques. The thermophysical processes were monitored by heating–cooling cycles, but the formation of liquid crystal phases were exhibited only for small values of the cooling rates. For the first heating–cooling cycle, the melting and the solidification processes, thus the characteristic temperatures, are shifted to higher values when compared to the following cycles.

Abstract

Angiogenesis is the process of developing new blood vessels from pre-existing ones. This review summarizes the main features of physiological and pathological angiogenesis and those of angiogenesis activation and inhibition. In healthy adults, angiogenesis is absent apart from its involvement in female reproductive functions and tissue regeneration. Angiogenesis is a complex process regulated by the action of specific activators and inhibitors. In certain diseases, modulating the angiogenic balance can be a therapeutic route, either by inhibiting angiogenesis (for example in the case of tumor angiogenesis), or by trying to activate the process of new blood vessels formation, which is the goal in case of cardiac or peripheral ischemia.

Abstract

Deshidratarea acută severă la sugar poate să survină în contextul unor multiple cauze etiologice, cea mai frecventă fi ind gastroenterita acută. Rezistenţa la tratamentul de corecţie electrolitic şi acidobazic prin persistenţa hiponatremiei alături de alte semne clinice sugestive obligă însă la investigaţii suplimentare pentru sindromul adrenogenital sau „de pierdere de sare“. Diagnosticul şi tratmentul acestuia constituie o urgenţă prin riscul de deces la care sunt expuşi aceşti sugari. Autorii prezintă cazul unui nou-născut provenit din sarcină gemelară diagnosticat cu sindrom adrenogenital şi particularităţile evolutive şi de tratament ale acestuia.

Abstract

Dentocalminul este un anestezic de contact, analgezic şi antiseptic utilizat pentru tratament local în stomatologie. Intoxicaţia cu această substanţă determină manifestări clinice grave datorate lidocainei şi fenolului, principalii constituenţi activi. Prezentăm cazul unui sugar de 11 luni intoxicat accidental cu dentocalmin, internat cu stare de rău convulsiv urmat de stop cardiorespirator. A fost resuscitat şi ventilat mecanic timp de 24 ore. Evoluţia a fost favorabilă, în pofi da dozei toxice mari şi a complicaţiilor survenite ca urmare a intubării orotraheale – pneumotorax, pneumomediastin şi emfi zem subcutanat cervical şi toracic, copilul fi ind externat după 10 zile, cu stare generală bună, fără sechele neuropsihice.

Keratoconus is a progressive corneal ectasia that may lead to severe visual impairment due to the irregular astigmatism caused by corneal thinning. In addition to its association with atopy, eye rubbing, or genetic component, late reports suggest the involvement of inflammation in the pathogenesis of the disease. Our aim was to determine the concentration of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, RANTES, IFN gamma, and TNF alpha in the tear film of patients with keratoconus and their first degree family members. We analyzed forty-eight participants in an observational cross-sectional study. The diagnosis of keratoconus had to be confirmed in addition to a minimum of 47 D corneal refractive power by corneal topography readings provided by a Placido-based topography system and analysis of the pattern: irregular astigmatism with an asymmetric “bow-tie.” As for the other groups, the most important diagnosis criteria were a normal topographic pattern with a regular astigmatism. 17 keratoconus patients, 16 relatives, and 15 controls were recruited after clinical assessment as part of the research. 41. Corneal hysteresis and primary open angle glaucoma.

Abstract

Objects: To investigate the variability of the corneal hysteresis in primary open angle glaucoma(POAG) patients. Material and Methods: Out of 123 eyes, 99 carried out the inclusion criteria and were investigated further using Goldman Aplanotonometer to measure intraocular pressure(IOP), Ocular Response Analyzer(ORA) in order to determine corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor(CRF), ultrasonic pachimetry (Ocuscan) to measure central corneal thickness(CCT) and Humphrey visual field to determine mean deviation(MD), pattern standard deviation(PSD) and visual field index(VFI). The patients were divided into two groups: one group of diagnosed POAG patients and one control group of healthy individuals. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive analyses and linear regression. Results: A considerable statistic correlation was found between CH and VFI both in the group of primary open angle glaucoma patients(r=0.52, P<0.0001), and the control group (r=0.22, p<0.04). Conclusions: The study shows a positive correlation, statistically significant, between corneal hysteresis and visual field index both in glaucoma patients and control subjects proving that a lower CH associates with a lower VFI. Ocular response analyzer can be considered a useful instrument in evaluation of primary open angle glaucoma patients.
