Mitigating uranium transport in groundwater is imperative for ensuring access to clean water across the globe. Here, in situ resonant anomalous X-ray reflectivity is used to investigate the adsorption of uranyl on alumina (012) in acidic aqueous solutions, representing typical U VI concentrations of contaminated water near mining sites. The analyses reveal that U VI adsorbs at two distinct heights of 2.4-3.2 and 5-5.3 Å from the surface terminal oxygens. The former is interpreted as the mixture of inner-sphere and outer-sphere complexes that adsorb closest to the surface. The latter is interpreted as an outer-sphere complex that shares one equatorial H 2 O with the terminal surface oxygen. With increasing pH, we observe an increasing prevalence of these outer-sphere complexes, indicating the enhanced role of the hydrogen bond that stabilizes adsorbed uranyl species. The presented work provides a molecular-scale understanding of sorption of uranyl on Al-based-oxide surfaces that has implications for environmental chemistry and materials science.

The dynamics of trace metals at mineral surfaces influence their fate and bioaccessibility in the environment. Trace metals on iron (oxyhydr)oxide surfaces display adsorption-desorption hysteresis, suggesting entrapment after aging. However, desorption experiments may perturb the coordination environment of adsorbed metals, the distribution of labile Fe(III), and mineral aggregation properties, influencing the interpretation of labile metal fractions. In this study, we investigated irreversible binding of nickel, zinc, and cadmium to goethite after aging times of 2-120 days using isotope exchange. Dissolved and adsorbed metal pools exchange rapidly, with half times <90 min, but all metals display a solid-associated fraction inaccessible to isotope exchange. The size of this nonlabile pool is the largest for nickel, with the smallest ionic radius, and the smallest for cadmium, with the largest ionic radius. Spectroscopy and extractions suggest that the irreversibly bound metals are incorporated in the goethite structure. Rapid exchange of labile solid-associated metals with solution demonstrates that adsorbed metals can sustain the dissolved pool in response to biological uptake or fluid flow. Trace metal fractions that irreversibly bind following adsorption provide a contaminant sequestration pathway, limit the availability of micronutrients, and record metal isotope signatures of environmental processes.

As an essential biomolecule for life, RNA is ubiquitous across environmental systems where it plays a central role in biogeochemical processes and emerging technologies. The persistence of RNA in soils and sediments is thought to be limited by enzymatic or microbial degradation, which occurs on timescales that are orders of magnitude faster than known abiotic pathways. Herein, we unveil a previously unreported abiotic pathway by which RNA rapidly hydrolyzes on the timescale of hours upon adsorption to iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals such as goethite (α-FeOOH). The hydrolysis products were consistent with iron present in the minerals acting as a Lewis acid to accelerate sequence-independent hydrolysis of phosphodiester bonds comprising the RNA backbone. In contrast to acid- or base-catalyzed RNA hydrolysis in solution, mineral-catalyzed hydrolysis was fastest at circumneutral pH, which allowed for both sufficient RNA adsorption and hydroxide concentration. In addition to goethite, we observed that RNA hydrolysis was also catalyzed by hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) but not by aluminum-containing minerals (e.g., montmorillonite). Given the extensive adsorption of nucleic acids to environmental surfaces, we anticipate previously overlooked mineral-catalyzed hydrolysis of RNA may be prevalent particularly in iron-rich soils and sediments, which must be considered across biogeochemical applications of nucleic acid analysis in environmental systems.

Fe(II) clays are common across many environments, making them a potentially significant microbial substrate, yet clays are not well established as an electron donor. Therefore, we explored whether Fe(II)-smectite supports the growth of Sideroxydans lithotrophicus ES-1, a microaerophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterium (FeOB), using synthesized trioctahedral Fe(II)-smectite and 2% oxygen. S. lithotrophicus grew substantially and can oxidize Fe(II)-smectite to a higher extent than abiotic oxidation, based on X-ray near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). Sequential extraction showed that edge-Fe(II) is oxidized before interior-Fe(II) in both biotic and abiotic experiments. The resulting Fe(III) remains in smectite, as secondary minerals were not detected in biotic and abiotic oxidation products by XANES and Mössbauer spectroscopy. To determine the genes involved, we compared S. lithotrophicus grown on smectite versus Fe(II)-citrate using reverse-transcription quantitative PCR and found that cyc2 genes were highly expressed on both substrates, while mtoA was upregulated on smectite. Proteomics confirmed that Mto proteins were only expressed on smectite, indicating that ES-1 uses the Mto pathway to access solid Fe(II). We integrate our results into a biochemical and mineralogical model of microbial smectite oxidation. This work increases the known substrates for FeOB growth and expands the mechanisms of Fe(II)-smectite alteration in the environment.

The dynamics of Pb(II) at mineral surfaces affect its mobility in the environment. Pb(II) forms inner- and outer-sphere complexes on mineral surfaces, and this adsorbed pool often represents a large portion of the bioaccessible Pb in contaminated soils. To assess the lability of this potentially reactive adsorbed Pb(II) pool at metal oxide surfaces, we performed Pb(II) isotope exchange measurements between dissolved Pb(II) enriched in 207 Pb and natural isotopic abundance Pb(II) adsorbed to rutile at pH 5, 6, and 7. We find that ∼95% of the adsorbed lead is exchangeable. An initially fast exchange (<1 h) is followed by a slower exchange that occurs on a time scale of hours to days. Pb L III -edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra indicate that similar binding mechanisms are present at all pH values and Pb(II) loadings, implying that differences in exchange rates across the pH range examined are not attributable to changes in the coordination environment. The slower exchange at pH 5 may be associated with interparticle and intraparticle diffusion resulting from particle aggregation. These findings demonstrate that the dissolved Pb(II) pool can be rapidly replenished by adsorbed Pb(II) if this pool is drawn down incrementally by biological uptake or a shift in chemical conditions.

Lead(IV) oxide (PbO 2 ) is one of the lead corrosion products that forms on the inner surface of lead pipes used for drinking water supply. It can maintain low dissolved Pb(II) concentrations when free chlorine is present. When free chlorine is depleted, PbO 2 and soluble Pb(II) will co-occur in these systems. This study used a stable lead isotope ( 207 Pb) as a tracer to examine the interaction between aqueous Pb(II) and solid PbO 2 at conditions with no net change in dissolved Pb concentration. While the dissolved Pb(II) concentration remained unchanged, significant isotope exchange occurred that indicated that substantial amounts (24.3-35.0% based on the homogeneous recrystallization model) of the Pb atoms in the PbO 2 solids had been exchanged with those in solution over 264 h. Neither α-PbO 2 nor β-PbO 2 displayed a change in mineralogy, particle size, or oxidation state after reaction with aqueous Pb(II). The combined isotope exchange and solid characterization results indicate that redox-driven recrystallization of PbO 2 had occurred. Such redox-driven recrystallization is likely to occur in water that stagnates in lead pipes that contain PbO 2 , and this recrystallization may alter the reactivity of PbO 2 with respect to its stability and susceptibility to reductive dissolution.

Removing dissolved selenium (i.e., selenate and selenite) from wastewater is a challenging issue for a range of industries. Iron electrocoagulation can produce Fe(II)-containing solids that can adsorb and chemically reduce dissolved Se. In a series of bench-scale experiments we investigated the effects of dissolved oxygen (fully oxic, partially oxic, and strictly anoxic) and pH (6 and 8) on the rate and extent of dissolved selenate and selenite removal by iron electrocoagulation. These studies combined measurements of the aqueous phase with the direct characterization of the resulting solids. Among the conditions studied the rate and extent of dissolved selenium (Se) removal were highest at pH 8 and strictly anoxic conditions. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrated that in the absence of oxygen, Se was primarily transformed to elemental selenium (Se 0 ) and selenide. Green rust that formed in the suspension during electrocoagulation played a key role as a reductant and sorbent of Se. At pH 6 dissolved oxygen did not affect the rates and extents of dissolved Se removal. Under all the conditions studied, dissolved Se removal was more effective with iron electrocoagulation than with the direct addition of pre-synthesized green rust or ferrous hydroxide. The most rapid and substantial dissolved Se removal was achieved by freshly-formed green rust and ferrous hydroxide, which are both Fe(II)-bearing solids. Adsorption and subsequent reduction of U(VI) on Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals can control the mobility of uranium in subsurface environments. Clays such as montmorillonite provide substantial amounts of the reactive surface area in many subsurface environments, and montmorillonite-containing materials are used in the storage of spent nuclear fuel. We investigated the extent of reduction of U(VI) by Fe(II)-bearing montmorillonite at different pH values and sodium concentrations using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and chemical extractions. Nearly complete reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) occurred at a low sodium concentration at both pH 3 and 6. At pH 6 and a high sodium concentration, which inhibits U(VI) binding at cation-exchange sites, the extent of U(VI) reduction was only 70%. Surface-bound U(VI) on unreduced montmorillonite was more easily extracted into solution with bicarbonate than surface-bound U(IV) generated by reduction of U(VI) on Fe(II)-bearing montmorillonite. We developed a nonelectrostatic surface complexation model to interpret the equilibrium adsorption of U(IV) on Fe(II)-bearing montmorillonite as a function of pH and sodium concentration. These findings establish the potential importance of structural Fe(II) in low iron content smectites in controlling uranium mobility in subsurface environments.

Aeolis Mons (informally, Mount Sharp) exhibits a number of canyons, including Gediz and Sakarya Valles. Poorly sorted debris deposits are evident on both canyon floors and connect with debris extending down the walls for canyon segments that cut through sulphate-bearing strata. On the floor of Gediz Vallis, debris overfills a central channel and merges with a massive debris ridge located at the canyon terminus. One wall-based debris ridge is evident. In comparison, the floor of Sakarya Vallis exhibits a complex array of debris deposits. Debris deposits on wall segments within Sakarya Vallis are mainly contained within chutes that extend downhill from scarps. Lateral debris ridges are also evident on chute margins. We interpret the debris deposits in the two canyons to be a consequence of one or more late-stage hydrogeomorphic events that increased the probability of landslides, assembled and channelized debris on the canyon floors, and moved materials down-canyon. The highly soluble nature of the sulphate-bearing rocks likely contributed to enhanced debris generation by concurrent aqueous weathering to produce blocky regolith for transport downslope by fluvial activity and landslides, including some landslides that became debris flows. Subsequent wind erosion in Gediz Vallis removed most of the debris deposits within that canyon and partially eroded the deposits within Sakarya Vallis. Lead oxide (PbO 2 ) has the lowest solubility with free chlorine among Pb corrosion products, but depletion of free chlorine or a switch from free chlorine to monochloramine can cause its reductive dissolution. We previously reported that Cu(II) and Zn(II) inhibited PbO 2 reductive dissolution within 12 h. Here, we expanded on this work by performing longer duration experiments and further exploring the underlying mechanisms. Between 12 and 48 h, Cu(II) and Zn(II) had no discernible effect on PbO 2 reductive dissolution. From 48 to 192 h, Cu(II) and Zn(II) enhanced PbO 2 reductive dissolution. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations followed the same trends as PbO 2 reductive dissolution, indicating that the DO was produced by PbO 2 reductive dissolution. On the basis of extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra, we hypothesize that the inhibitory effect of Cu(II) and Zn(II) on PbO 2 reductive dissolution (<12 h) is caused by decreasing abundance of protonated sites on the PbO 2 surface. The enhanced dissolution (>48 h) may be caused by competitive adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) with Pb(II), which could limit the adsorption of Pb(II) onto PbO 2 that could otherwise inhibit reductive dissolution. This study indicates that stagnation time plays a vital role in determining cations' effects on the stability of Pb corrosion products.

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) exerts a strong control over the transport of minor but critical metals in the environment and is used in multiple industrial applications; the photocatalysis community has explored the properties of hematite nanoparticles over a wide range of transition metal dopants. Nonetheless, simplistic assumptions are used to rationalize the local coordination environment of impurities in hematite. Here, we use ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD)-guided structural analysis to model the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Cu 2+ - and Zn 2+ -doped hematite nanoparticles. Specific defect-impurity associations were identified, and the local coordination environments of Cu and Zn both displayed considerable configurational disorder that, in aggregate, approached Jahn-Teller-like distortion for Cu but, in contrast, maintained hematite-like symmetry for Zn. This study highlights the role of defects in accommodating impurities in a nominally low-entropy phase and the limits to traditional shell-by-shell fitting of EXAFS for dopants/impurities in unprecedented bonding environments.

This paper provides an overview of the Curiosity rover's exploration at Vera Rubin ridge (VRR) and summarizes the science results. VRR is a distinct geomorphic feature on lower Aeolis Mons (informally known as Mount Sharp) that was identified in orbital data based on its distinct texture, topographic expression, and association with a hematite spectral signature. Curiosity conducted extensive remote sensing observations, acquired data on dozens of contact science targets, and drilled three outcrop samples from the ridge, as well as one outcrop sample immediately below the ridge. Our observations indicate that strata composing VRR were deposited in a predominantly lacustrine setting and are part of the Murray formation. The rocks within the ridge are chemically in family with underlying Murray formation strata. Red hematite is dispersed throughout much of the VRR bedrock, and this is the source of the orbital spectral detection. Gray hematite is also present in isolated, gray-colored patches concentrated toward the upper elevations of VRR, and these gray patches also contain small, dark Fe-rich nodules. We propose that VRR formed when diagenetic event(s) preferentially hardened rocks, which were subsequently eroded into a ridge by wind. Diagenesis also led to enhanced crystallization and/or cementation that deepened the ferric-related spectral absorptions on the ridge, which helped make them readily distinguishable from orbit. Results add to existing evidence of protracted aqueous environments at Gale crater and give new insight into how diagenesis shaped Mars' rock record., (©2020. The Authors.)

The inner-sphere adsorption of AsO 4 3- , PO 4 3- , and SO 4 2- on the hydroxylated α-Al 2 O 3 (001) surface was modeled with the goal of adapting a density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamics framework for calculating the adsorption energetics. While DFT is a reliable method for predicting various properties of solids, including crystalline materials comprised of hundreds (or even thousands) of atoms, adding aqueous energetics in heterogeneous systems poses steep challenges for modeling. This is in part due to the fact that environmentally relevant variations in the chemical surroundings cannot be captured atomistically without increasing the system size beyond tractable limits. The DFT + thermodynamics approach to this conundrum is to combine the DFT total energies with tabulated solution-phase data and Nernst-based corrective terms to incorporate experimentally tunable parameters such as concentration. Central to this approach is the design of thermodynamic cycles that partition the overall reaction (here, inner-sphere adsorption proceeding via ligand exchange) into elementary steps that can either be fully calculated or for which tabulated data are available. The ultimate goal is to develop a modeling framework that takes into account subtleties of the substrate (such as adsorption-induced surface relaxation) and energies associated with the aqueous environment such that adsorption at mineral-water interfaces can be reliably predicted, allowing for comparisons in the denticity and protonation state of the adsorbing species. Based on the relative amount of experimental information available for AsO 4 3- , PO 4 3- , and SO 4 2- adsorbates and the well-characterized hydroxylated α-Al 2 O 3 (001) surface, these systems are chosen to form a basis for assessing the model predictions. We discuss how the DFT + thermodynamics results are in line with the experimental information about the oxyanion sorption behavior. Additionally, a vibrational analysis was conducted for the charge-neutral oxyanion complexes and is compared to the available experimental findings to discern the inner-sphere adsorption phonon modes. The DFT + thermodynamics framework used here is readily extendable to other chemical processes at solid-liquid interfaces, and we discuss future directions for modeling surface processes at mineral-water and environmental interfaces.

Zn is an essential micronutrient that is often limited in tropical, lateritic soils in part because it is sequestered in nominally refractory iron oxide phases. Stable phases such as goethite and hematite, however, can undergo reductive recrystallization without a phase change under circumneutral pH conditions and release metal impurities such as Zn into aqueous solutions. Further, the process appears to be driven by Fe vacancies. In this contribution, we used ab initio molecular dynamics informed extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra to show that Zn incorporated in the structure of hematite is associated with coupled O-Fe and protonated Fe vacancies, providing a potential link between crystal chemistry and the bioavailability of Zn.

During biogeochemical iron cycling at redox interfaces, dissolved Fe(II) induces the recrystallization of Fe(III) oxides. Oxalate and other organic acids promote dissolution of these minerals and may also induce recrystallization. These processes may redistribute trace metals among the mineral bulk, mineral surface, and aqueous solution. However, the impact of interactions among organic acids, dissolved Fe(II), and iron oxide minerals on trace metal fate in such systems is unclear. The present study thus explores the effect of oxalate on Ni release from and incorporation into hematite and goethite in the absence and presence of Fe(II). When Ni is initially structurally incorporated into the iron oxides, both oxalate and dissolved Fe(II) promote the release of Ni to aqueous solution. When both species are present, their effects on Ni release are synergistic at pH 7 but inhibitory at pH 4, indicating that cooperative and competitive interactions vary with pH. In contrast, oxalate suppresses Ni incorporation into goethite and hematite during Fe(II)-induced recrystallization, decreasing the proportion of Ni substituting in a mineral structure by up to 36%. These observations suggest that at redox interfaces oxalate largely enhances trace metal mobility. In such settings, oxalate, and likely other organic acids, may thus enhance micronutrient availability and inhibit contaminant sequestration.

A wide range of isoelectric points (IEPs) has been reported in the literature for sapphire-c (α-alumina), also referred to as basal plane, (001) or (0001), single crystals. Interestingly, the available data suggest that the variation of IEPs is comparable to the range of IEPs encountered for particles, although single crystals should be much better defined in terms of surface structure. One explanation for the range of IEPs might be the obvious danger of contaminating the small surface areas of single crystal samples while exposing them to comparatively large solution reservoirs. Literature suggests that factors like origin of the sample, sample treatment or the method of investigation all have an influence on the surfaces and it is difficult to clearly separate the respective, individual effects. In the present study, we investigate cause-effect relationships to better understand the individual effects. The reference IEP of our samples is between 4 and 4.5. High temperature treatment tends to decrease the IEP of sapphire-c as does UV treatment. Increasing the initial miscut (i.e. the divergence from the expected orientation of the crystal) tends to increase the IEP as does plasma cleaning, which can be understood assuming that the surfaces have become less hydrophobic due to the presence of more and/or larger steps with increasing miscut or due to amorphisation of the surface caused by plasma cleaning. Pre-treatment at very high pH caused an increase in the IEP. Surface treatments that led to IEPs different from the stable value of reference samples typically resulted in surfaces that were strongly affected by subsequent exposure to water. The streaming potential data appear to relax to the reference sample behavior after a period of time of water exposure. Combination of the zeta-potential measurements with AFM investigations support the idea that atomically smooth surfaces exhibit lower IEPs, while rougher surfaces (roughness on the order of nanometers) result in higher IEPs compared to reference samples. Two supplementary investigations resulted in either surprising or ambiguous results. On very rough surfaces (roughness on the order of micrometers) the IEP lowered compared to the reference sample with nanometer-scale roughness and transient behavior of the rough surfaces was observed. Furthermore, differences in the IEP as obtained from streaming potential and static colloid adhesion measurements may suggest that hydrodynamics play a role in streaming potential experiments. We finally relate surface diffraction data from previous studies to possible interpretations of our electrokinetic data to corroborate the presence of a water film that can explain the low IEP. Calculations show that the surface diffraction data are in line with the presence of a water film, however, they do not allow to unambiguously resolve critical features of this film which might explain the observed surface chemical characteristics like the dangling OH-bond reported in sum frequency generation studies. A broad literature review on properties of related surfaces shows that the presence of such water films could in many cases affect the interfacial properties. Persistence or not of the water film can be crucial. Surface conditions on early Mars were likely anoxic, similar to early Earth, but the timing of the evolution to oxic conditions characteristic of contemporary Mars is unresolved. Ferrous trioctahedral smectites are the thermodynamically predicted products of anoxic basalt weathering, but orbital analyses of Noachian-aged terrains find primarily Fe 3+ -bearing clay minerals. Rover-based detection of Fe 2+ -bearing trioctahedral smectites at Gale Crater suggest that ferrous smectites are the unoxidized progenitors of orbitally-detected ferric smectites. To assess this pathway, we conducted ambient-temperature oxidative alteration experiments on four synthetic ferrous smectites having molar Fe/(Mg+Fe) from 1.00 to 0.33. Smectite suspension in air-saturated solutions produced incomplete oxidation (24-38% Fe 3+ /ΣFe). Additional smectite oxidation occurred upon re-exposure to air-saturated solutions after anoxic hydrothermal recrystallization, which accelerated cation and charge redistribution in the octahedral sheet. Oxidation was accompanied by contraction of the octahedral sheet (d (060) decreased from 1.53-1.56 Å to 1.52 Å), consistent with a shift towards dioctahedral structure. Ferrous smectite oxidation by aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions resulted in nearly complete Fe 2+ oxidation but also led to partial Fe 3+ ejection from the structure, producing nanoparticulate hematite. Reflectance spectra of oxidized smectites were characterized by (Fe 3+ ,Mg) 2 -OH bands at 2.28-2.30 μm, consistent with oxidative formation of dioctahedral nontronite. Accordingly, ferrous smectites are plausible precursors to observed ferric smectites on Mars, and their presence in late-Noachian sedimentary units suggests that anoxic conditions may have persisted on Mars beyond the Noachian.

The reaction of manganese oxides with Cr(III)-bearing solids in soils and sediments can lead to the natural production of Cr(VI) in groundwater. Building on previous knowledge of MnO 2 as an oxidant for Cr(III)-containing solids, this study systematically evaluated the rates and mechanisms of the oxidation of Cr(III) in iron oxides by δ-MnO 2 . The Fe/Cr ratio (x = 0.055-0.23 in Cr x Fe 1-x (OH) 3 ) and pH (5-9) greatly influenced the Cr(VI) production rates by controlling the solubility of Cr(III) in iron oxides. We established a quantitative relationship between Cr(VI) production rates and Cr(III) solubility of Cr x Fe 1-x (OH) 3 , which can help predict Cr(VI) production rates at different conditions. The adsorption of Cr(VI) and Mn(II) on solids shows a typical pH dependence for anions and cations. A multichamber reactor was used to assess the role of solid-solid contact in Cr x Fe 1-x (OH) 3 -MnO 2 interactions, which eliminates the contact of the two solids while still allowing aqueous species transport across a permeable membrane. Cr(VI) production rates were much lower in multichamber than in completely mixed batch experiments, indicating that the redox interaction is accelerated by mixing of the solids. Our results suggest that soluble Cr(III) released from Cr x Fe 1-x (OH) 3 solids to aqueous solution can migrate to MnO 2 surfaces where it is oxidized.

Iron oxides are ubiquitous in soils and sediments and play a critical role in the geochemical distribution of trace elements and heavy metals via adsorption and coprecipitation. The presence of organic acids may potentially alter how metals associate with iron oxide minerals through a series of cooperative or competitive processes: solution complexation, ternary surface complexation, and surface site competition. The macroscopic and molecular-scale effects of these processes were investigated for Ni adsorption to hematite and goethite at pH 7 in the presence of oxalate. The addition of this organic acid suppresses Ni uptake on both minerals. Aqueous speciation suggests that this is dominantly the result of oxalate complexing and solubilizing Ni. Comparison of the Ni surface coverage to the concentration of free (uncomplexed) Ni 2+ in solution suggests that the oxalate also alters Ni adsorption affinity. EXAFS and ATR-FTIR spectroscopies indicate that these changes in binding affinity are due to the formation of Ni-oxalate ternary surface complexes. These observations demonstrate that competition between dissolved oxalate and the mineral surface for Ni overwhelms the enhancement in adsorption associated with ternary complexation. Oxalate thus largely enhances Ni mobility, thereby increasing micronutrient bioavailability and inhibiting contaminant sequestration.

Iron-based electrocoagulation can be highly effective for Cr(VI) removal from water supplies. However, the presence of humic acid (HA) inhibited the rate of Cr(VI) removal in electrocoagulation, with the greatest decreases in Cr(VI) removal rate at higher pH. This inhibition was probably due to the formation of Fe(II) complexes with HA that are more rapidly oxidized than uncomplexed Fe(II) by dissolved oxygen, making less Fe(II) available for reduction of Cr(VI). Close association of Fe(III), Cr(III), and HA in the solid products formed during electrocoagulation influenced the fate of both Cr(III) and HA. At pH 8, the solid products were colloids (1-200 nm) with Cr(III) and HA concentrations in the filtered fraction being quite high, while at pH 6 these concentrations were low due to aggregation of small particles. X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy indicated that the iron oxides produced were a mixture of lepidocrocite and ferrihydrite, with the proportion of ferrihydrite increasing in the presence of HA. Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) in electrocoagulation, and the coordination environment of the Cr(III) in the solids was similar regardless of the humic acid loading, pH, and dissolved oxygen level.

Herein, we describe engineered superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) as platform materials for enhanced uranyl (UO 2 2+ ) sorption and separation processes under environmentally relevant conditions. Specifically, monodispersed 8-25 nm iron oxide (magnetite, Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles with tailored organic acid bilayered coatings have been systematically evaluated and optimized to bind, and thus remove, uranium from water. The combined nonhydrolytic synthesis and bilayer phase transfer material preparation methods yield highly uniform and surface tailorable IONPs, which allow for direct evaluation of the size-dependent and coating-dependent sorption capacities of IONPs. Optimized materials demonstrate ultrahigh sorption capacities (>50% by wt/wt) at pH 5.6 for 8 nm oleic acid (OA) bilayer and sodium monododecyl phosphate (SDP) surface-stabilized IONPs. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that iron oxide core particle size and stabilizing surface functional group(s) substantially affect U(VI)-removal mechanisms, specifically the ratio of uptake via adsorption versus reduction to U(IV). Taken together, tunable size and surface functionality, high colloidal stability, and favorable affinity toward uranium provide distinct synergistic advantage(s) for the application of bilayered IONPs as part of the next-generation material-based uranium recovery, remediation, and sensing technologies.

Layered Mn oxide minerals (phyllomanganates) often control trace metal fate in natural systems. The strong uptake of metals such as Ni and Zn by phyllomanganates results from adsorption on or incorporation into vacancy sites. Mn(II) also binds to vacancies and subsequent comproportionation with structural Mn(IV) may alter sheet structures by forming larger and distorted Mn(III)O 6 octahedra. Such Mn(II)-phyllomanganate reactions may thus alter metal uptake by blocking key reactive sites. Here we investigate the effect of Mn(II) on Ni and Zn binding to phyllomanganates of varying initial vacancy content (δ-MnO 2 , hexagonal birnessite, and triclinic birnessite) at pH 4 and 7 under anaerobic conditions. Dissolved Mn(II) decreases macroscopic Ni and Zn uptake at pH 4 but not pH 7. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy demonstrates that decreased uptake at pH 4 corresponds with altered Ni and Zn adsorption mechanisms. These metals transition from binding in the interlayer to sheet edges, with Zn increasing its tetrahedrally coordinated fraction. These effects on metal uptake and binding correlate with Mn(II)-induced structural changes, which are more substantial at pH 4 than 7. Through these structural effects and the pH-dependence of Mn(II)-metal competitive adsorption, system pH largely controls metal binding to phyllomanganates in the presence of dissolved Mn(II).

Phosphate can be added to subsurface environments to immobilize U(VI) contamination. The efficacy of immobilization depends on the site-specific groundwater chemistry and aquifer sediment properties. Batch and column experiments were performed with sediments from the Hanford 300 Area in Washington State and artificial groundwater prepared to emulate the conditions at the site. Batch experiments revealed enhanced U(VI) sorption with increasing phosphate addition. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements of samples from the batch experiments found that U(VI) was predominantly adsorbed at conditions relevant to the column experiments and most field sites (low U(VI) loadings, <25 μM), and U(VI) phosphate precipitation occurred only at high initial U(VI) (>25 μM) and phosphate loadings. While batch experiments showed the transition of U(VI) uptake from adsorption to precipitation, the column study was more directly relevant to the subsurface environment because of the high solid:water ratio in the column and the advective flow of water. In column experiments, nearly six times more U(VI) was retained in sediments when phosphate-containing groundwater was introduced to U(VI)-loaded sediments than when the groundwater did not contain phosphate. This enhanced retention persisted for at least one month after cessation of phosphate addition to the influent fluid. Sequential extractions and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy of sediments from the columns suggested that the retained U(VI) was primarily in adsorbed forms. These results indicate that in situ remediation of groundwater by phosphate addition provides lasting benefit beyond the treatment period via enhanced U(VI) adsorption to sediments.

The potential for new U.S. regulations for Cr(VI) in drinking water have spurred strong interests in improving technologies for Cr(VI) removal. This study examined iron electrocoagulation for Cr(VI) removal at conditions directly relevant to drinking water treatment. Cr(VI) is chemically reduced to less soluble Cr(III) species by the Fe(II) produced from an iron anode, and XANES spectra indicate that the Cr is entirely Cr(III) in solid-phases produced in electrocoagulation. The dynamics of Cr(VI) removal in electrocoagulation at pH 6 and pH 8 at both oxic and anoxic conditions can be described by a new model that incorporates Fe(II) release from the anode and heterogeneous and homogeneous reduction of Cr(VI) by Fe(II). Heterogeneous Cr(VI) reduction by adsorbed Fe(II) was critical to interpreting Cr(VI) removal at pH 6, and the Fe- and Cr-containing EC product was found to catalyze the redox reaction. Dissolved oxygen (DO) did not observably inhibit Cr(VI) removal because Fe(II) reacts with DO more slowly than it does with Cr(VI), and Cr(VI) removal was faster at higher pH. Even in the presence of common groundwater solutes, iron electrocoagulation lowered Cr(VI) concentrations to levels well below California's 10 μg/L.

Aluminum hydroxides play important roles in regulating the fate and transport of contaminants and nutrients in soils and aquatic systems. Like many metal oxides, these minerals display surface functional groups in a series of coordination states, each of which may differ in its affinity for adsorbates. The distribution of functional group types varies among distinct surfaces of aluminum hydroxides, and we thus hypothesize that the adsorption behavior and mechanisms will show a dependence on particle morphology. To test this hypothesis, we investigate arsenate adsorption on two aluminum hydroxide polymorphs with distinct particle morphologies, gibbsite [γ-Al(OH) 3 ] and bayerite [α-Al(OH) 3 ], at pH 4 and 7. Synthetic gibbsite platelets expose large (001) basal surfaces predicted to be terminated by doubly coordinated functional groups (>Al 2 OH). In contrast, synthetic bayerite microrods display mainly edge surfaces (parallel to the c axis) containing abundant singly coordinated functional groups (>AlOH 2 ). Macroscopic adsorption studies show that gibbsite adsorbs less arsenate per unit surface area than bayerite at both pH values and suggest that two surface complexes form on each material. Similar electrokinetic behavior is displayed at the same relative coverages of arsenate, suggesting that similar reactive surface groups (>AlOH 2 ) control the surface charging on both particles. EXAFS spectroscopy shows that there is no variation in arsenate surface speciation on a given mineral with surface coverage or pH. Whereas bidentate binuclear inner-sphere species are the dominant complexes present, the EXAFS result suggest that outer-sphere species also occur on both minerals, with a greater abundance on gibbsite. This binding mode likely involves adsorption to >Al 2 OH sites, which have a slow ligand exchange rate that inhibits inner-sphere binding. These results demonstrate that adsorption mechanisms and capacity, even when normalized for specific surface area, vary with metal oxide particle morphology because of the distribution of distinct functional groups.

Phosphate addition to subsurface environments contaminated with uranium can be used as an in situ remediation approach. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the dependence of the extent and mechanism of uranium uptake on the pathway for reaction with calcium phosphates. At pH 4.0 and 6.0 uranium uptake from solution occurred via autunite (Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2) precipitation irrespective of the starting forms of calcium and phosphate. At pH 7.5, a condition at which calcium phosphate solids could form, the uptake mechanism depended on the nature of the calcium and phosphate as determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. When dissolved uranium, calcium, and phosphate were added simultaneously, uranium was structurally incorporated into a newly formed amorphous calcium phosphate solid. Adsorption was the dominant removal mechanism for uranium contacted with preformed amorphous calcium phosphate solids. When U(VI) was added to a suspension containing amorphous calcium phosphate solids as well as dissolved calcium and phosphate, then removal occurred through precipitation (57 ± 4%) of autunite and adsorption (43 ± 4%) onto calcium phosphate. Dissolved uranium, calcium, and phosphate concentrations with saturation index calculations helped identify removal mechanisms and determine thermodynamically favorable solid phases.

Phosphate amendments can be added to U(VI)-contaminated subsurface environments to promote in situ remediation. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of phosphate addition on the transport of U(VI) through contaminated sediments. In batch experiments using sediments (<2 mm size fraction) from a site in Rifle, Colorado, U(VI) only weakly adsorbed due to the dominance of the aqueous speciation by Ca-U(VI)-carbonate complexes. Column experiments with these sediments were performed with flow rates that correspond to a groundwater velocity of 1.1 m/day. In the absence of phosphate, the sediments took up 1.68-1.98 μg U/g of sediments when the synthetic groundwater influent contained 4 μM U(VI). When U(VI)-free influents were then introduced with and without phosphate, substantially more uranium was retained within the column when phosphate was present in the influent. Sequential extractions of sediments from the columns revealed that uranium was uniformly distributed along the length of the columns and was primarily in forms that could be extracted by ion exchange and contact with a weak acid. Laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) analysis along with sequential extraction results suggest adsorption as the dominant uranium uptake mechanism. The response of dissolved uranium concentrations to stopped-flow events and the comparison of experimental data with simulations from a simple reactive transport model indicated that uranium adsorption to and desorption from the sediments was not always at local equilibrium., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: Human multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) isolated from bone marrow or other tissue sources have great potential to treat a wide range of injuries and disorders in the field of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. In particular, MSCs have inherent characteristics to suppress the immune system and are being studied in clinical studies to prevent graft-versus-host disease. MSCs can be expanded in vitro and have potential for differentiation into multiple cell lineages. However, the impact of cell passaging on gene expression and function of the cells has not been determined., Methods: Commercially available human MSCs derived from bone marrow from six different donors, grown under identical culture conditions and harvested at cell passages 3, 5, and 7, were analyzed with gene-expression profiling by using microarray technology., Results: The phenotype of these cells did not change as reported previously; however, a statistical analysis revealed a set of 78 significant genes that were distinguishable in expression between passages 3 and 7. None of these significant genes corresponded to the markers established by the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) for MSC identification. When the significant gene lists were analyzed through pathway analysis, these genes were involved in the top-scoring networks of cellular growth and proliferation and cellular development. A meta-analysis of the literature for significant genes revealed that the MSCs seem to be undergoing differentiation into a senescent cell type when cultured extensively. Consistent with the differences in gene expression at passage 3 and 7, MSCs exhibited a significantly greater potential for cell division at passage 3 in comparison to passage 7., Conclusions: Our results identified specific gene markers that distinguish aging MSCs grown in cell culture. Confirmatory studies are needed to correlate these molecular markers with biologic attributes that may facilitate the development of assays to test the quality of MSCs before clinical use.

We describe the preclinical development and in vivo efficacy of a novel chemical series that inhibits hepatitis C virus replication via direct interaction with the viral nonstructural protein 4B (NS4B). Significant potency improvements were realized through isosteric modifications to our initial lead 1a. The temptation to improve antiviral activity while compromising physicochemical properties was tempered by the judicial use of ligand efficiency indices during lead optimization. In this manner, compound 1a was transformed into (+)-28a which possessed an improved antiviral profile with no increase in molecular weight and only a modest elevation in lipophilicity. Additionally, we employed a chimeric "humanized" mouse model of HCV infection to demonstrate for the first time that a small molecule with high in vitro affinity for NS4B can inhibit viral replication in vivo. This successful proof-of-concept study suggests that drugs targeting NS4B may represent a viable treatment option for curing HCV infection.

Opportunity has investigated in detail rocks on the rim of the Noachian age Endeavour crater, where orbital spectral reflectance signatures indicate the presence of Fe(+3)-rich smectites. The signatures are associated with fine-grained, layered rocks containing spherules of diagenetic or impact origin. The layered rocks are overlain by breccias, and both units are cut by calcium sulfate veins precipitated from fluids that circulated after the Endeavour impact. Compositional data for fractures in the layered rocks suggest formation of Al-rich smectites by aqueous leaching. Evidence is thus preserved for water-rock interactions before and after the impact, with aqueous environments of slightly acidic to circum-neutral pH that would have been more favorable for prebiotic chemistry and microorganisms than those recorded by younger sulfate-rich rocks at Meridiani Planum.

The mobility of hexavalent uranium in soil and groundwater is strongly governed by adsorption to mineral surfaces. As strong naturally occurring adsorbents, manganese oxides may significantly influence the fate and transport of uranium. Models for U(VI) adsorption over a broad range of chemical conditions can improve predictive capabilities for uranium transport in the subsurface. This study integrated batch experiments of U(VI) adsorption to synthetic and biogenic MnO(2), surface complexation modeling, ζ-potential analysis, and molecular-scale characterization of adsorbed U(VI) with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The surface complexation model included inner-sphere monodentate and bidentate surface complexes and a ternary uranyl-carbonato surface complex, which was consistent with the EXAFS analysis. The model could successfully simulate adsorption results over a broad range of pH and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations. U(VI) adsorption to synthetic δ-MnO(2) appears to be stronger than to biogenic MnO(2), and the differences in adsorption affinity and capacity are not associated with any substantial difference in U(VI) coordination.

Introduction of coal fly ash into aquatic systems poses a potential environmental hazard because of its heavy metal content. Here we investigate the relationship between solid phase transformations, fluid composition, and metal release and speciation during prolonged wet aging of a class C and class F coal fly ash. The class C ash causes rapid alkalinization of water that is neutralized over time by CO(2) uptake from air and calcite precipitation. The resulting aqueous metal concentrations are below regulatory limits with the exception of Cr; solubility constraints suggest this is released as chromate. Limited As release is accompanied by no change in solid-phase speciation, but up to 35% of the Zn in the ash dissolves and reprecipitates in secondary phases. Similar processes inhibit Ba and Cu release. In contrast, the class F ash causes rapid acidification of water and initially releases substantial quantities of As, Se, Cr, Cu, Zn, and Ba. Arsenic concentrations decline during aging because of adsorption to the iron oxide-rich ash; this is aided by As(III) oxidation. Precipitation processes lower Ba and Cr concentrations during aging. Se, Cu, and Zn concentrations remain elevated during wet aging and solid-phase Zn speciation is not affected by ash-water reactions. Total metal contents were poor predictors of metal release, which is predominantly controlled by metal speciation and the effects of ash-water reactions on fluid pH. While contact with atmospheric gases has little effect on class F ash, carbonation of class C ash inhibits metal release and neutralizes the alkalinity produced by the ash.

The reduction of trace elements and contaminants by Fe(II) at Fe(III) oxide surfaces is well documented. However, the effect of aqueous Fe(II) on the fate of redox-active trace elements structurally incorporated into iron oxides is unknown. Here, we investigate the fate of redox-active elements during Fe(II)-activated recrystallization of Cu-, Co-, and Mn-substituted goethite and hematite. Enhanced release of Cu, Co, and Mn to solution occurs upon exposure of all materials to aqueous Fe(II) relative to reactions in Fe(II)-free fluids. The quantity of trace element release increases with pH when Fe(II) is present but decreases with increasing pH in the absence of Fe(II). Co and Mn release from goethite is predicted well using a second-order kinetic model, consistent with the release of redox-inactive elements such as Ni and Zn. However, Cu release and Co and Mn release from hematite require the sum of two rates to adequately model the kinetic data. Greater uptake of Fe(II) by Cu-, Co-, and Mn-substituted iron oxides relative to analogues containing only redox-inactive elements suggests that net Fe(II) oxidation occurs. Reduction of Cu, Co, and Mn in all materials following reaction with Fe(II) at pHs 7.0-7.5 is confirmed by X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. This work shows that redox-sensitive elements structurally incorporated within iron oxides are reduced and repartitioned into fluids during Fe(II)-mediated recrystallization. Such abiotic reactions likely operate in tandem with partial microbial and abiotic iron reduction or during the migration of Fe(II)-containing fluids, mobilizing structurally bound contaminants and micronutrients in aquatic systems.

Aqueous Fe(II) reacts with Fe(III) oxides by coupled electron transfer and atom exchange (ETAE) resulting in mineral recrystallization, contaminant reduction, and trace element cycling. Previous studies of Fe(II)-Fe(III) ETAE have explored the reactivity of either pure iron oxide phases or those containing small quantities of soluble trace elements. Naturally occurring iron oxides, however, contain substantial quantities of insoluble impurities (e.g., Al) which are known to affect the chemical properties of such minerals. Here we explore the effect of Al(III), Cr(III), and Sn(IV) substitution (1-8 mol %) on trace element release from Ni(II)-substituted goethite and Zn(II)-substituted hematite during reaction with aqueous Fe(II). Fe(II)-activated trace element release is substantially inhibited from both minerals when an insoluble element is cosubstituted into the structure, and the total amount of release decreases exponentially with increasing cosubstituent. The limited changes in surface composition that occur following reaction with Fe(II) indicate that Al, Cr, and Sn do not exsolve from the structure and that Ni and Zn released to solution originate primarily from the bulk rather than the particle exterior (upper ~3 nm). Incorporation of Al into goethite substantially decreases the amount of iron atom exchange with aqueous Fe(II) and, consequently, the amount of Ni release from the structure. This implies that trace element release inhibition caused by substituting insoluble elements results from a decrease in the amount of mineral recrystallization. These results suggest that naturally occurring iron oxides containing insoluble elements are less susceptible to Fe(II)-activated recrystallization and exhibit a greater retention of trace elements and contaminants than pure mineral phases.

The molecular-scale immobilization mechanisms of uranium uptake in the presence of phosphate and goethite were examined by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Wet chemistry data from U(VI)-equilibrated goethite suspensions at pH 4-7 in the presence of ~100 μM total phosphate indicated changes in U(VI) uptake mechanisms from adsorption to precipitation with increasing total uranium concentrations and with increasing pH. EXAFS analysis revealed that the precipitated U(VI) had a structure consistent with the meta-autunite group of solids. The adsorbed U(VI), in the absence of phosphate at pH 4-7, formed bidentate edge-sharing, ≡ Fe(OH)(2)UO(2), and bidentate corner-sharing, (≡ FeOH)(2)UO(2), surface complexes with respective U-Fe coordination distances of ~3.45 and ~4.3 Å. In the presence of phosphate and goethite, the relative amounts of precipitated and adsorbed U(VI) were quantified using linear combinations of the EXAFS spectra of precipitated U(VI) and phosphate-free adsorbed U(VI). A U(VI)-phosphate-Fe(III) oxide ternary surface complex is suggested as the dominant species at pH 4 and total U(VI) of 10 μM or less on the basis of the linear combination fitting, a P shell indicated by EXAFS, and the simultaneous enhancement of U(VI) and phosphate uptake on goethite. A structural model for the ternary surface complex was proposed that included a single phosphate shell at ~3.6 Å (U-P) and a single iron shell at ~4.3 Å (U-Fe). While the data can be explained by a U-bridging ternary surface complex, (≡ FeO)(2)UO(2)PO(4), it is not possible to statistically distinguish this scenario from one with P-bridging complexes also present.

Electron transfer and atom exchange (ETAE) between aqueous Fe(II) and Fe(III) oxides induces surface growth and dissolution that affects trace element fate and transport. We have recently demonstrated Ni(II) cycling through goethite and hematite (adsorbed Ni incorporates into the mineral structure and preincorporated Ni releases to solution) during Fe(II)-Fe(III) ETAE. However, the chemical parameters affecting net trace element release remain unknown. Here, we examine the chemical controls on Ni(II) and Zn(II) release from Ni- and Zn-substituted goethite and hematite during reaction with Fe(II). Release follows a rate law consistent with surface reaction limited mineral dissolution and suggests that release occurs near sites of Fe(III) reductive dissolution during Fe(II)-Fe(III) ETAE. Metal substituent type affects reactivity; Zn release is more pronounced from hematite than goethite, whereas the opposite trend occurs for Ni. Buildup of Ni or Zn in solution inhibits further release but this resumes upon fluid exchange, suggesting that sustained release is possible under flow conditions. Mineral and aqueous Fe(II) concentrations as well as pH strongly affect sorbed Fe(II) concentrations, which directly control the reaction rates and final metal concentrations. Our results demonstrate that structurally incorporated trace elements are mobilized from iron oxides into fluids without abiotic or microbial net iron reduction. Such release may affect micronutrient availability, contaminant transport, and the distribution of redox-inactive trace elements in natural and engineered systems.

Biogeochemical iron cycling often generates systems where aqueous Fe(II) and solid Fe(III) oxides coexist. Reactions between these species result in iron oxide surface and phase transformations, iron isotope fractionation, and redox transformations of many contaminant species. Fe(II)-induced recrystallization of goethite and hematite has recently been shown to cause the repartitioning of Ni(II) at the mineral-water interface, with adsorbed Ni incorporating into the iron oxide structure and preincorporated Ni released back into aqueous solution. However, the effect of Fe(II) on the fate and speciation of redox inactive species incompatible with iron oxide structures is unclear. Arsenate sorption to hematite and goethite in the presence of aqueous Fe(II) was studied to determine whether Fe(II) causes substantial changes in the sorption mechanisms of such incompatible species. Sorption isotherms reveal that Fe(II) minimally alters macroscopic arsenate sorption behavior except at circumneutral pH in the presence of elevated concentrations (10⁻³ M) of Fe(II) and at high arsenate loadings, where a clear signature of precipitation is observed. Powder X-ray diffraction demonstrates that the ferrous arsenate mineral symplesite precipitates under such conditions. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy shows that outside this precipitation regime arsenate surface complexation mechanisms are unaffected by Fe(II). In addition, arsenate was found to suppress Fe(II) sorption through competitive adsorption processes before the onset of symplesite precipitation. This study demonstrates that the sorption of species incompatible with iron oxide structure is not substantially affected by Fe(II) but that such species may potentially interfere with Fe(II)-iron oxide reactions via competitive adsorption.

Gene expression data from microarrays are being applied to predict preclinical and clinical endpoints, but the reliability of these predictions has not been established. In the MAQC-II project, 36 independent teams analyzed six microarray data sets to generate predictive models for classifying a sample with respect to one of 13 endpoints indicative of lung or liver toxicity in rodents, or of breast cancer, multiple myeloma or neuroblastoma in humans. In total, >30,000 models were built using many combinations of analytical methods. The teams generated predictive models without knowing the biological meaning of some of the endpoints and, to mimic clinical reality, tested the models on data that had not been used for training. We found that model performance depended largely on the endpoint and team proficiency and that different approaches generated models of similar performance. The conclusions and recommendations from MAQC-II should be useful for regulatory agencies, study committees and independent investigators that evaluate methods for global gene expression analysis.

Stereorandom and diastereoselective syntheses of a novel 1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,10b-octahydro-1,10-phenanthroline ring system are described. Derivatives of all four diastereomers were prepared and isolated in >98% ee. The pure enantiomers were compared in order to determine the preferred absolute and relative configuration required for optimal anti-HIV activity. Synthetic approaches allowing for variation of the substitution pattern are outlined and resulting changes in antiviral activity and pharmacokinetics are highlighted. Several novel amine substituted N-(1H-benzimidazol-2ylmethyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-8-quinolinamines were synthesized which had potent activity against HIV-1. This led to the identification of compounds with low and sub-nanomolar anti-HIV-1 activity.

The synthesis and SAR of a series of substituted 1-aminotetrahydrocarbazoles with potent activity against human papillomaviruses are described. Synthetic approaches allowing for variation of the substitution pattern of the tetrahydrocarbazole are outlined and resulting changes in antiviral activity are highlighted. Several compounds with in vitro antiviral activity (W12 antiviral assay) in the low nanomolar range were identified and (1R)-6-bromo-N-[(1R)-1-phenylethyl]-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-carbazole-1-amine was selected for further evaluation.

U(VI) adsorption on aerosol-synthesized hematite particles ranging in size from 12 to 125 nm was studied to explore nanoscale size effects on uranium adsorption. Adsorption on 70 nm aqueous-synthesized particles was also investigated to examine the effect of the synthesis method on reactivity. Equilibrium adsorption was measured over pH 3-11 at two U(VI) loadings. Surface complexation modeling, combined with adjustment of adsorption equilibrium constants to be independent of site density and surface area, provided a quantitative reaction-based framework for evaluating adsorption affinity and capacity. Among the aerosol-synthesized particles, the adsorption affinity decreased as the particle size increased from 12 to 125 nm with similar intermediate affinities for 30 and 50 nm particles. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy measurements suggest that the differences in adsorption affinity and capacity are not the result of substantially different coordination environments of adsorbed U(VI).

Starting from a potent ketone-based inhibitor with poor drug properties, incorporation of P(2)-P(3) elements from a ketoamide-based inhibitor led to the identification of a hybrid series of ketone-based cathepsin K inhibitors with better oral bioavailability than the starting ketone.

The use and application of charge coupled device (CCD) area detectors for high-resolution specular X-ray reflectivity is discussed. Direct comparison of high-resolution specular X-ray reflectivity data measured with CCD area detectors and traditional X-ray scintillator ('point') detectors demonstrates that the use of CCD detectors leads to a substantial (approximately 30-fold) reduction in data acquisition rates because of the elimination of the need to scan the sample to distinguish signal from background. The angular resolution with a CCD detector is also improved by a factor of approximately 3. The ability to probe the large dynamic range inherent to high-resolution X-ray reflectivity data in the specular reflection geometry was demonstrated with measurements of the orthoclase (001)- and alpha-Al2O3 (012)-water interfaces, with measured reflectivity signals varying by a factor of approximately 10(6) without the use of any beam attenuators. Statistical errors in the reflectivity signal are also derived and directly compared with the repeatability of the measurements.
