Abstract

The concept of joint attention holds significant importance in human interaction and is pivotal in establishing rapport, understanding, and effective communication. Within social robotics, enhancing user perception of the robot and promoting a sense of natural interaction with robots becomes a central element. In this sense, emulating human-centric qualities in social robots, such as joint attention, defined as the ability of two or more individuals to focus on a common event simultaneously, can increase their acceptability. This study analyses the impact on user perception of a responsive joint attention system integrated into a social robot within an interactive scenario. The experimental setup involves playing against the robot in the "Odds and Evens" game under two conditions: whether the joint attention system is active or inactive. Additionally, auditory and visual distractors are employed to simulate real-world distractions, aiming to test the system's ability to capture and follow user attention effectively. To assess the influence of the joint attention system, participants completed the Robotic Social Attributes Scale (RoSAS) after each interaction. Abstract

Affective feedback from social robots is a useful technique for communicating to people whether they are interacting "well" with the robot or not. However, some users, such as people with physical or cognitive difficulties, may not be able to interact in all the desired ways. In these cases, affective feedback from the robot could be excessively negative—an "unhappy" robot, leading to an unrewarding experience for the user. This article presents a motivation-based architecture for an autonomous multimodal social robot, that incorporates an affective feedback mechanism which generates an affective state by combining the internal needs of the robot and the social interaction quality. The balance between these two factors can dynamically change, allowing the robot to adapt its affective feedback to the user's interaction style and capabilities. We have implemented this architecture in a simulation and in a MiRo social robot, and report experiments examining the behavior of the system in interactions with different experimental user profiles. The results show that the adaptive mechanism allows the robot to change its affective feedback to give more positive encouragement to users than in non-adaptive cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: In recent years, the integration of robotic systems into various aspects of daily life has become increasingly common. As these technologies continue to advance, ensuring user-friendly interfaces and seamless interactions becomes more essential. For social robots to genuinely provide lasting value to humans, a favourable user experience (UX) emerges as an essential prerequisite. This article aimed to evaluate the usability of the MINI robot, highlighting its strengths and areas for improvement based on user feedback and performance. Materials and Methods: In a controlled lab setting, a mixed-method qualitative study was conducted with ten individuals aged 65 and above diagnosed with mild dementia (MD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Participants engaged in individual MINI robot interaction sessions, completing cognitive tasks as per written instructions. Video and audio recordings documented interactions, while post-session System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaires quantified usability perception. Ethical guidelines were followed, ensuring informed consent, and the data underwent qualitative and quantitative analyses, contributing insights into the MINI robot's usability for this demographic. Results: The study addresses the ongoing challenges that tasks present, especially for MD individuals, emphasizing the importance of user support. Most tasks require both verbal and physical interactions, indicating that MD individuals face challenges when switching response methods within subtasks. These complexities originate from the selection and use of response methods, including difficulties with voice recognition, tablet touch, and tactile sensors. These challenges persist across tasks, with individuals with MD struggling to comprehend task instructions and provide correct answers and individuals with MCI struggling to use response devices, often due to the limitations of the robot's speech recognition. Technical shortcomings have been identified. The results of the SUS indicate positive perceptions, although there are lower ratings for instructor assistance and pre-use learning. The average SUS score of 68.3 places device usability in the "good" category. Conclusions: Our study examines the usability of the MINI robot, revealing strengths in quick learning, simple system and operation, and integration of features, while also highlighting areas for improvement. Careful design and modifications are essential for meaningful engagement with people with dementia. Abstract

Multimodal communication is a human feature that enables diverse interactions. In human–robot interaction (HRI), robots have to communicate using human skills so that they can seem natural and assist effectively. Most research uses predefined gestures to equip robots with social abilities. However, researchers scarcely consider generating bioinspired involuntary behavior to improve a robot's expressiveness and communication. Human studies revealed that involuntary behavior affects how others perceive communicative intentions. Therefore, mimicking human involuntary behavior may positively affect HRI. This article extends our previous work on equipping robots with involuntary behavior with a user study that evaluates the use of bioinspiration for complementing gestures. A preliminary test is conducted with 15 participants to determine if they can perceive the intensities of the involuntary processes heart rate, pupil size, blink rate, breathing rate, and motor activity. 63 new participants interacted with a robot with bioinspired behaviors or a robot only showing predefined gestures to evaluate the robots' warmth, competence, and discomfort. The results show that the preliminary test participants differentiated the intensities of the involuntary processes. Participants in the second study find the robot with bioinspired behaviors significantly warmer and more competent than the robot with predefined gestures, with no discomfort difference. Abstract

Las Jornadas de Robótica y Bioingeniería de 2023 tienen lugar en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial de la Universidad Politécnica de IVIadrid, entre los días 14 y 16 de junio de 2023. En este evento propiciado por el Comité Español de Automática (CEA) tiene lugar la celebración conjunta de las XII Jornadas Nacionales de Robótica y el XIV Simposio CEA de Bioingeniería. Las Jornadas Nacionales de Robótica es un evento promovido por el Grupo Temático de Robótica (GTRob) de CEA para dar visibilidad y mostrar las actividades desarrolladas en el ámbito de la investigación y transferencia tecnológica en robótica. Asimismo, el propósito de Simposio de Bioingeniería, que cumple ahora su decimocuarta dicción, es el de proporcionar un espacio de encuentro entre investigadores, desabolladores, personal clínico, alumnos, industriales, profesionales en general e incluso usuarios que realicen su actividad en el ámbito de la bioingeniería. Estos eventos se han celebrado de forma conjunta en la anualidad 2023. Esto ha permitido aunar y congregar un elevado número de participantes tanto de la temática robótica como de bioingeniería (investigadores, profesores, desabolladores y profesionales en general), que ha posibilitado establecer puntos de encuentro, sinergias y colaboraciones entre ambos. El programa de las jornadas aúna comunicaciones científicas de los últimos resultados de investigación obtenidos, por los grupos a nivel español más representativos dentro de la temática de robótica y bioingeniería, así como mesas redondas y conferencias en las que se debatirán los temas de mayor interés en la actualidad. En relación con las comunicaciones científicas presentadas al evento, se ha recibido un total de 46 ponencias, lo que sin duda alguna refleja el alto interés de la comunidad científica en las Jornadas de Robótica y Bioingeniería. Estos trabajos serán expuestos y presentados a lo largo de un total de 10 sesiones, distribuidas durante los diferentes días de las Jornadas. Las temáticas de los trabajos cubren los principales retos científicos relacionados con la robótica y la bioingeniería: robótica aérea, submarina, terrestre, percepción del entorno, manipulación, robótica social, robótica médica, teleoperación, procesamiento de señales biológicos, neurorehabilitación etc. Confiamos, y estamos seguros de ello, que el desarrollo de las jornadas sea completamente productivo no solo para los participantes en las Jornadas que podrán establecer nuevos lazos y relaciones fructíferas entre los diferentes grupos, sino también aquellos investigadores que no hayan podido asistir. Este documento que integra y recoge todas las comunicaciones científicas permitirá un análisis más detallado de cada una de las mismas.

49. Using Large Language Models to Shape Social Robots’ Speech

Abstract

Social robots are making their way into our lives in different scenarios in which humans and robots need to communicate. In these scenarios, verbal communication is an essential element of human-robot interaction. However, in most cases, social robots’ utterances are based on predefined texts, which can cause users to perceive the robots as repetitive and boring. Achieving natural and friendly communication is important for avoiding this scenario. To this end, we propose to apply state-of- the-art natural language generation models to provide our social robots with more diverse speech. In particular, we have implemented and evaluated two mechanisms: a paraphrasing module that transforms the robot’s utterances while keeping their original meaning, and a module to generate speech about a certain topic that adapts the content of this speech to the robot’s conversation partner. The results show that these models have great potential when applied to our social robots, but several limitations must be considered. These include the computational cost of the solutions presented, the latency that some of these models can introduce in the interaction, the use of proprietary models, or the lack of a subjective evaluation that complements the results of the tests conducted.

Abstract

[Resumen] Este trabajo presenta el desarrollo de una aplicación de entretenimiento integrada en un robot social para jugar al juego clásico Veo, veo. El objetivo es dotar al robot de las capacidades perceptivas necesarias para participar en el juego, pudiendo tomar el rol de adivinar o pensar objetos. El robot utiliza un sistema de visión artificial y modelos de reconocimiento de objetos para identificar los elementos del entorno y obtener características especificas de estos (nombre, posición, tamaño). Además, se ha desarrollado una habilidad de juego que dispone de un sistema de pistas dinámico basado en las características obtenidas en la detección de objetos. Ambos bloques, la detección y la habilidad, han sido integrados en la arquitectura del robot social Mini. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo desarrollar una habilidad de entretenimiento y acompañamiento que fomente las habilidades de deducción y observación del usuario., [Abstract] This work presents the development of an entertainment application integrated in a social robot to play the classic game I spy. The objective is to provide the robot with the necessary perceptual capabilities to participate in the game, being able to take the role of guessing or thinking objects. The robot uses an artificial vision system and object recognition models to identify the elements of the environment and obtain specific characteristics of these (name, position, size). In addition, a game skill has been developed that has a dynamic hint system based on the features obtained in object detection. Both blocks, the detection and the skill, have been integrated in the architecture of the Mini social robot. This work seeks to develop an entertainment and companion skill that fosters the user’s deduction and observation skills.
