During their thermally pulsing phase, Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars eject material that forms extended dusty envelopes. Visible polarimetric imaging found clumpy dust clouds within two stellar radii of several oxygen-rich stars. Inhomogeneous molecular gas has also been observed in multiple emission lines within several stellar radii of different oxygen rich stars, including W Hya and Mira. At the stellar surface level, infrared images have revealed intricate structures around the carbon semi-regular variable R Scl and in the S-type star $\pi^{\mathrm{1}}$ Gru. Infrared images have also shown clumpy dust structures within a few stellar radii of the prototypical carbon AGB star IRC+10216, and studies of the molecular gas distribution beyond the dust formation zone have also shown complex circumstellar structures. Because of the lack of sufficient spatial resolution, however, the distribution of molecular gas in the stellar atmosphere and the dust formation zone of AGB carbon stars is not known, nor is how it is subsequently expelled. Here we report observations with a resolution of one stellar radius of the recently formed dust and molecular gas in the atmosphere of IRC+10216. Lines of HCN, SiS, and SiC$_2$ appear at different radii and in different clumps, which we interpret as large convective cells in the photosphere, as seen in Betelgeuse. The convective cells coalesce with pulsation causing anisotropies that, together with companions, shape its circumstellar envelope., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures. We present interferometric observations at 1 and 3\,mm with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of the free-free continuum and mm-wavelength recombination line (mRRL) emission of the ionized core (within $\lsim$130\,au) of the young Planetary Nebula (PN) candidate M\,2-9.These inner regions are concealed in the vast majority of similar objects. A spectral index for the mm-to-cm continuum of $\sim$0.9 indicates predominantly free-free emission from an ionized wind, with a minor contribution from warm dust. The mm-continuum emission in M\,2-9 reveals an elongated structure along the main symmetry axis of the large-scale bipolar nebula with a C-shaped curvature surrounded by a broad-waisted component. This structure is consistent with an ionized bent jet and a perpendicular compact dusty disk. The presence of a compact equatorial disk (of radius $\sim$50\,au) is also supported by red-shifted CO and \trecem\ absorption profiles observed from the base of the receding north lobe against the compact background continuum. The redshift observed in the CO absorption profiles likely signifies gas infall movements from the disk toward a central source. The mRRLs exhibit velocity gradients along the axis, implying systematic expansion in the C-shaped bipolar outflow. The highest expansion velocities ($\sim$80\,\kms) are found in two diagonally opposed compact regions along the axis, referred to as the high-velocity spots/shells (HVS), indicating either rapid wind acceleration or shocks at radial distances of $\sim$0\farc02-0\farc04 ($\sim$15-25\,au) from the center. A subtle velocity gradient perpendicular to the lobes is also found, suggestive of rotation. Our ALMA observations detect increased brightness and broadness in the mRRLs... As mass-losing asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars evolve to planetary nebulae (PNe), the mass outflow geometries transform from nearly spherical to extreme aspherical. The physical mechanisms governing this transformation are widely believed to be linked to binarity and the associated production of disks and fast jets during transitional (post-AGB) evolutionary stages. We are carrying out a systematic ALMA survey ($P$re-planet$A$ry $N$ebulae high-angular-res$O$lution su$R$vey with $A$L$MA$ or PANORAMA) of a representative sample of bipolar and multipolar post-AGB objects. We have obtained high angular-resolution (0".1-0".4) observations of the CO(3--2) and/or 6--5 emission in order to probe the spatio-kinematic structure of the collimated outflows and the central disk/torii. The results are remarkable, generally showing the presence of bipolar or multipolar high-velocity outflows, dense toroidal waists, and in one case, a geometrically-thin circular ring around the central bipolar nebula. A high degree of point-symmetry characterizes the morphology of the mass ejecta. In this contribution, we present these and other highlights from our survey. We aim to use 2D/3D radiative transfer modeling in order to derive accurate outflow momenta, masses and mass-loss rates for our sample, and build hydrodynamical models that can explain the observed spatio-kinematic structures. These results will then be used to distinguish between different classes of PN-shaping binary interaction models.

Symbiotic systems often include an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star and a hot compact companion, such as a white dwarf, that are in close interaction. Due to the intense ultraviolet emission from the hot companion, the molecular content of circumstellar envelopes in the symbiotic systems is poor. As a result, the less abundant molecules have not been previously studied in detail in this kind of object. R Aqr is the closest and best-studied symbiotic system. We obtain the spatial distribution of the recombination line H30{\alpha} with a high and moderate angular resolution, and it is compared with the emission of the continuum at 1.3 mm. High-resolution maps of several molecules are also obtained in the three observed ALMA bands. We study the molecular emissions using a simplified model to explain the brightness distributions seen in the central position of our maps. We find that the low-resolution continuum map at 1.3mm shows the emission of the radio photosphere of the AGB star, its surroundings, and the structure of the bipolar jet launched by the companion. The high-resolution continuum map at 1.3mm shows the innermost part of the jet, probably revealing the position of the secondary, and suggests mass transfer from the AGB star to the white dwarf. The brightness distribution of H30{\alpha} is similar but not coincident with the continuum emission. The brightness distributions of the studied molecular lines show a variety of shapes. The emissions of the abundant molecules, CO and SiO, are relatively extended since they can survive far from the AGB star in spite of the intense ultraviolet emission from the white dwarf. On the contrary, less abundant molecules only survive in regions close to the AGB star, where shielding is stronger. From our best-fit model for these weak species, we find that these less abundant species are confined to the intra-orbital regions.

We report on recent results from our successful and pioneering observational program with ALMA to study emerging ultracom pact HII regions of pre-Planetary Nebulae (pPNe) using mm-wavelength recombination lines (mRRLs) as new optimal tracers. We focus on our study of two poster-child pPNe, namely, M2-9 and CRL618. We reveal the structure and kinematics of the en igmatic inner nebular regions of these objects with an unprecedented angular resolution down to 20-30mas (~15-30AU). For both targets, the ionized central regions are elongated along the main symmetry axis of the large-scale nebulae, consiste nt with bipolar winds, and show notable axial velocity gradients with expansion velocities of up to ~100km/s. The H30a pr ofiles exhibit time variability, reflecting changes in the physical properties and kinematics on scales of a few years. O ur ongoing analysis employs 3D, non-LTE radiative transfer modeling, providing a detailed description of the innermost la yers of these well known pPNe with exceptional clarity., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We aim to study the dust distribution in the central regions of the Keplerian disk of the Red Rectangle, the prototype of binary post-AGB stars with rotating circumbinary disks, and to compare it with the distribution of relevant molecular gas tracers We present new high-resolution (20 milliarcseconds, mas) ALMA observations of continuum and line emissions at 0.9 mm. The maps have been analyzed by means of a simple model of dust and free-free emissionn that is able to reproduce the continuum data. Resuts: i) We find that most of the dust emission in the Red Rectangle is concentrated in the inner disk regions, with a typical size of 250 AU in diameter and 50 AU in width. ii) The settlement of dust grains onto inner equatorial regions is remarkable when compared with the relatively widespread gas distribution. iii) This region is basically coincident with the warm PDR (photo-dominated region) where CI, CII, and certain molecules such as HCN are presumably formed, as well as probably PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, whose emission is very strong in this source). iv) We confirm the large size of the grains, with a typical radius ~ 150 mu The opacity of dust at 0.9 mm is deduced to be relatively large, ~0.5. v) We also confirm the existence of a very compact HII region in the center, for which we measure an extent of 10 - 15 mas (~ 10 AU) and a total flux of 7 - 8 mJy at 0.9 mm., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

There is a class of binary post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars that exhibit remarkable near-infrared (NIR) excess. These stars are surrounded by disks with Keplerian or quasi-Keplerian dynamics and outflows composed of gas escaping from the rotating disk. Depending on the dominance of these components, there are two subclasses of binary post-AGB stars: disk-dominated and outflow-dominated. We aim to properly study the hourglass-like structure that surrounds the Keplerian disk around 89 Her. We present total-power on-the-fly maps of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $J$=2-1 emission lines in 89 Her. Previous studies are known to suffer from flux losses in the most extended components. We merge these total-power maps with previous NOEMA maps. The resulting combined maps are expected to detect the whole nebula extent of the source. Our new combined maps contain the entirety of the detectable flux of the source and at the same time are of high spatial resolution thanks to the interferometric observations. We find that the hourglass-like extended outflow around the rotating disk is larger and more massive than suggested by previous works. The total nebular mass of this very extended nebula is 1.8E-2 solar masses, of which 65% comes from the outflow. The observational data and model results lead us to classify the envelope around 89 Her as an outflow-dominated nebula, together with R Sct and IRAS 19125+0343 (and very probably AI CMi, IRAS 20056+1834, and IRAS 18123+0511). The updated statistics on the masses of the two post-AGB main components reveal that there are two distinct subclasses of nebulae around binary post-AGB stars depending on which component is the dominant one. Red supergiant stars (RSGs, Minit = 10-40Msun) are known to eject large amounts of material, as much as half of their initial mass during this evolutionary phase. However, the processes powering the mass ejection in low- and intermediate-mass stars do not work for RSGs and the mechanism that drives the ejection remains unknown. Different mechanisms have been proposed as responsible for this mass ejection but so far little is known about the actual processes taking place in these objects. Here we present high angular resolution interferometric ALMA maps of VY CMa continuum and molecular emission, which resolve the structure of the ejecta with unprecedented detail. The study of the molecular emission from the ejecta around evolved stars has been shown to be an essential tool in determining the characteristics of the mass loss ejections. Our aim is thus to use the information provided by these observations to understand the ejections undergone by VY CMa and to determine their possible origins. We inspected the kinematics of molecular emission observed. We obtained position-velocity diagrams and reconstructed the 3D structure of the gas traced by the different species. It allowed us to study the morphology and kinematics of the gas traced by the different species surrounding VY CMa. Two types of ejecta are clearly observed: extended, irregular, and vast ejecta surrounding the star that are carved by localized fast outflows. The structure of the outflows is found to be particularly flat. We present a 3D reconstruction of these outflows and proof of the carving. This indicates that two different mass loss processes take place in this massive star. We tentatively propose the physical cause for the formation of both types of structures. These results provide essential information on the mass loss processes of RSGs and thus of their further evolution., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

There is a class of binary post-AGB stars (binary system including a post-AGB star) that are surrounded by Keplerian disks and outflows resulting from gas escaping from the disk. To date, there are seven sources that have been studied in detail through interferometric millimeter-wave maps of CO lines (ALMA/NOEMA). For the cases of the Red Rectangle, IW Carinae, IRAS 08544-4431, and AC Herculis, it is found that around greater than 85% of the total nebular mass is located in the disk with Keplerian dynamics. The remainder of the nebular mass is located in an expanding component. This outflow is probably a disk wind consisting of material escaping from the rotating disk. These sources are the disk-dominated nebulae. On the contrary, our maps and modeling of 89 Herculis, IRAS 19125+0343, and R Scuti, which allowed us to study their morphology, kinematics, and mass distribution, suggest that, in these sources, the outflow clearly is the dominant component of the nebula (around 75% of the total nebular mass), resulting in a new subclass of nebulae around binary post-AGB stars: the outflow-dominated sources.Besides CO, the chemistry of this type of source has been practically unknown thus far. We also present a very deep single-dish radio molecular survey in the 1.3, 2, 3, 7, and 13 mm bands (around 600 h of telescope time). Our results and detections allow us to classify our sources as O- or C-rich. We also conclude that the calculated abundances of the detected molecular species other than CO are particularly low, compared with AGB stars. We present ALMA continuum and molecular line emission maps at $\sim$1 mm of OH 231.8, a well studied bipolar nebula around an AGB star. The excellent angular resolution of our maps ($\sim$20 mas) allows us to scrutinise the central nebular regions of OH 231.8, which hold the clues to unravel how this iconic object assembled its complex nebular architecture. We report, for the first time in this object and others of its kind, the discovery of a rotating circumbinary disk selectively traced by NaCl, KCl, and H$_2$O emission lines. This represents the first detection of KCl in an oxygen-rich AGB circumstellar envelope. The rotating disk, of radius $\sim$30 au, lies at the base of a young bipolar wind traced by SiO and SiS emission, which also presents signs of rotation at its base. The NaCl equatorial structure is characterised by a mean rotation velocity of $\sim$4 km s$^{-1}$ and extremely low expansion speeds, $\sim$3 km s$^{-1}$. The outflow has a predominantly expansive kinematics characterised by a constant radial velocity gradient of $\sim$65 km s$^{-1}$ arcsec$^{-1}$ at its base. Beyond $r$$\sim$350 au, the gas in the outflow continues radially flowing at a constant terminal speed of $\sim$16 km s$^{-1}$. Our continuum maps reveal a spatially resolved dust disk-like structure perpendicular to the outflow, with the NaCl, KCl and H$_2$O emission arising from the disk's surface layers. Within the disk, we also identify an unresolved point continuum source, which likely represents the central Mira-type star QX Pup enshrouded by a $\sim$3 $R_{\star}$ component of hot ($\sim$1400 K) freshly formed dust. The point source is slightly off-centered from the disk centroid, enabling us for the first time to place constraints to the orbital separation and period of the central binary system, $a$$\sim$20 au and $P_{\rm orb}$$\sim$55 yr, respectively. Molecular emission was imaged with ALMA from numerous components near and within bright H2-emitting knots and absorbing dust globules in the Crab Nebula. These observations provide a critical test of how energetic photons and particles produced in a young supernova remnant interact with gas, cleanly differentiating between competing models. The four fields targeted show contrasting properties but within them, seventeen distinct molecular clouds are identified with CO emission; a few also show emission from HCO+, SiO and/or SO. These observations are compared with Cloudy models of these knots. It has been suggested that the Crab filaments present an exotic environment in which H2 emission comes from a mostly-neutral zone probably heated by cosmic rays produced in the supernova surrounding a cool core of molecular gas. Our model is consistent with the observed CO J=3-2 line strength. We investigate the structure, dynamics, and chemistry of the molecule-rich nebula around the stellar symbiotic system R Aqr, which is significantly affected by the presence of a white dwarf (WD) companion. We study the effects of the strong dynamical interaction between the AGB wind and the WD and of photodissociation by the WD UV radiation on the circumstellar shells. We obtained high-quality ALMA maps of the 12CO J=2-1, J=3-2, and J=6-5 lines and of 13CO J=3-2. The maps were analyzed by means of a heuristic 3D model that is able to reproduce the observations. In order to interpret this description of the molecule-rich nebula, we performed sophisticated calculations of hydrodynamical interaction and photoinduced chemistry. We find that the CO-emitting gas is distributed within a relatively small region <~ 1.5". Its structure consists of a central dense component plus strongly disrupted outer regions, which seem to be parts of spiral arms that are highly focused on the orbital plane. The structure and dynamics of these spiral arms are compatible with our hydrodynamical calculations. We argue that the observed nebula is the result of the dynamical interaction between the wind and the gravitational attraction of the WD. We also find that UV emission from the hot companion efficiently photodissociates molecules except in the densest and best-shielded regions, that is, in the close surroundings of the AGB star and some shreds of the spiral arms from which the detected lines come. We can offer a faithful description of the distribution of nebular gas in this prototypical source, which will be a useful template for studying material around other tight binary systems., Comment: 17 pages. There is a class of binary post-AGB stars with a remarkable near-infrared excess that are surrounded by Keplerian or quasi-Keplerian disks and extended outflows composed of gas escaping from the disk. The Keplerian dynamics had been well identified in four cases, namely the Red Rectangle, AC Her, IW Car, and IRAS 08544-4431. In these objects, the mass of the outflow represents ~ 10 % of the nebular mass, the disk being the dominant component of the nebula. We present interferometric NOEMA maps of 12CO and 13CO J=2-1 in 89 Her and 12CO J=2-1 in AC Her, IRAS 19125+0343, and R Sct. Several properties of the nebula are obtained from the data and model fitting, including the structure, density, and temperature distributions, as well as the dynamics. We also discuss the uncertainties on the derived values. The presence of an expanding component in AC Her is doubtful, but thanks to new maps and models, we estimate an upper limit to the mass of this outflow of < 3 10^-5 Mo, that is, the mass of the outflow is < 5 % of the total nebular mass. For 89 Her, we find a total nebular mass of 1.4 10^-2 Mo, of which ~ 50 % comes from an hourglass-shaped extended outflow. In the case of IRAS 19125+0343, the nebular mass is 1.1 10^-2 Mo, where the outflow contributes ~ 70 % of the total mass. The nebular mass of R Sct is 3.2 10^-2 Mo, of which ~ 75 % corresponds to a very extended outflow that surrounds the disk. Our results for IRAS 19125+0343 and R Sct lead us to introduce a new subclass of binary post-AGB stars, for which the outflow is the dominant component of the nebula. The study of the gas in the envelopes surrounding asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars through observations in the millimetre wavelength range provides information about the history and nature of these molecular factories. Here we present ALMA observations at subarsecond resolution, complemented with IRAM-30m data, of several lines of SiO, SiS, and CS towards the best-studied AGB circumstellar envelope, IRC+10216. We aim to characterise their spatial distribution and determine their fractional abundances mainly through radiative transfer and chemical modelling. The three species display extended emission with several enhanced emission shells. CS displays the most extended distribution reaching distances up to approximately 20''. SiS and SiO emission have similar sizes of approximately 11'', but SiS emission is slightly more compact. We have estimated fractional abundances relative to H$_2$, which on average are equal to f(SiO)$\sim$10$^{-7}$, f(SiS)$\sim$10$^{-6}$, and f(CS)$\sim$10$^{-6}$ up to the photo-dissociation region. The observations and analysis presented here show evidence that the circumstellar material displays clear deviations from an homogeneous spherical wind, with clumps and low density shells that may allow UV photons from the interstellar medium (ISM) to penetrate deep into the envelope, shifting the photo-dissociation radius inwards. Our chemical model predicts photo-dissociation radii compatible with those derived from the observations, although it is unable to predict abundance variations from the starting radius of the calculations ($\sim$10$R_{*}$), which may reflect the simplicity of the model. We conclude that the spatial distribution of the gas proves the episodic and variable nature of the mass loss mechanism of IRC+10216, on timescales of hundreds of years., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures. We aim to study the main properties of a volume-limited unbiased sample of well-characterized semi-regular variables (SRs) in order to clarify important issues, such as the formation of axially symmetric planetary nebulae (PNe) from spherical circumstellar envelopes (CSEs), which takes place during the mass-loss process along the AGB phase. We present new high-S/N IRAM 30m observations of the 12CO J=2-1, J=1-0, and 13CO J=1-0 lines, in a volume-limited sample of SRs. We analyzed the data by characterizing the main properties of the CSEs. The 12CO J=2-1 data were used to study the profiles, while the 12CO J=1-0 data were used to estimate mass-loss rates for the complete sample. We have classified the sources into four groups according to the different profiles and final gas expansion velocities. Type 1 and 2 profiles are broad and narrow symmetric lines, respectively. Type 3 profiles on the contrary are strange profiles with very pronounced asymmetries. Finally, type 4 profiles are those showing two different components: a narrow line profile superimposed on a broad pedestal component. Interestingly, we report a moderate correlation between mass-loss rates and 12CO J=1-0/J=2-1 line intensity ratios for O-rich SRs, suggesting a different behaviour between C- and O-rich SRs. Using SHAPE+shapemol, we find a unified simple model based on an oblate spheroid placed in different orientations that may explain all the 12CO profiles in the sample, indicating that the gas expansion is in general predominantly equatorial. Moreover, in order to explain the type 4 profiles, we define an extra component which may somehow be a biconical structure or similar. Type 1 and 2 profiles, curiously, may also be explained by standard spherically symmetric envelopes. We present interferometric observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of the free-free continuum and recombination line emission at 1 and 3mm of the "Red Square Nebula" surrounding the B[e]-type star MWC922. The unknown distance to the source is usually taken to be d=1.7-3 kpc. The unprecedented angular resolution (up to ~0.02arcsec) and exquisite sensitivity of these data unveil, for the first time, the structure and kinematics of the emerging, compact ionized region at its center. We imaged the line emission of H30a and H39a, previously detected with single-dish observations, as well as of H51epsilon, H55gamma, and H63delta, detected for the first time in this work. The line emission is seen over a full velocity range of ~180 km/s arising in a region of diameter <0.14arcsec (less than a few hundred au) in the maser line H30a, which is the most intense transition reported here. We resolve the spatio-kinematic structure of a nearly edge-on disk rotating around a central mass of ~10Msun (d=1.7 kpc) or ~18Msun (d=3 kpc), assuming Keplerian rotation. Our data also unveil a fast (~100 km/s) bipolar ejection (a jet?) orthogonal to the disk. In addition, a slow (<15km/s) wind may be lifting off the disk. Both, the slow and the fast winds are found to be rotating in a similar manner to the ionized layers of the disk. Context. AGB stars go through a process of strong mass-loss that involves pulsations of the atmosphere, which extends to a region where the conditions are adequate for dust grains to form. Radiation pressure acts on these grains which, coupled to the gas, drive a massive outflow. The details of this process are not clear, including which molecules are involved in the condensation of dust grains. Aims. To study the role of the SiO molecule in the process of dust formation and mass-loss in M-type AGB stars. Methods. Using the IRAM NOEMA interferometer we observed the $^{28}$SiO and $^{29}$SiO $J=3-2$, $v=0$ emission from the inner circumstellar envelope of the evolved stars IK Tau and IRC+10011. We computed azimuthally averaged emission profiles to compare the observations to models using a molecular excitation and ray-tracing code for SiO thermal emission. Results. We observed circular symmetry in the emission distribution. We also found that the source diameter varies only marginally with radial velocity, which is not the expected behavior for envelopes expanding at an almost constant velocity. The adopted density, velocity, and abundance laws, together with the mass-loss rate, which best fit the observations, give us information on the chemical behavior of the SiO molecule and its role in the dust formation process. Conclusions. The results indicate that there is a strong coupling between the depletion of gas phase SiO and gas acceleration in the inner envelope. This could be explained by the condensation of SiO into dust grains.

We present continuum and molecular line emission ALMA observations of OH 231.8+4.2, a well studied bipolar nebula around an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. The high angular resolution (~0.2-0.3 arcsec) and sensitivity of our ALMA maps provide the most detailed and accurate description of the overall nebular structure and kinematics of this object to date. We have identified a number of outflow components previously unknown. Species studied in this work include 12CO, 13CO, CS, SO, SO2, OCS, SiO, SiS, H3O+, Na37Cl, and CH3OH. The molecules Na37Cl and CH3OH are first detections in OH 231.8+4.2, with CH3OH being also a first detection in an AGB star. Our ALMA maps bring to light the totally unexpected position of the mass-losing AGB star (QX Pup) relative to the large-scale outflow. QX Pup is enshrouded within a compact (<60 AU) parcel of dust and gas (clump S) in expansion (V~5-7 km/s) that is displaced by 0.6arcsec to the south of the dense equatorial region (or waist) where the bipolar lobes join. Our SiO maps disclose a compact bipolar outflow that emerges from QX Pup's vicinity. This outflow is oriented similarly to the large-scale nebula but the expansion velocities are about ten times lower (~35 km/s). We deduce short kinematical ages for the SiO outflow, ranging from ~50-80 yr, in regions within ~150 AU, to ~400-500 yr at the lobe tips (~3500 AU). Adjacent to the SiO outflow, we identify a small-scale hourglass-shaped structure (mini-hourglass) that is probably made of compressed ambient material formed as the SiO outflow penetrates the dense, central regions of the nebula. The lobes and the equatorial waist of the mini-hourglass are both radially expanding with a constant velocity gradient. The mini-waist is characterized by extremely low velocities, down to ~1 km/s at ~150 AU, which tentatively suggest the presence of a stable structure. (abridged)

We have observed the symbiotic stellar system R Aqr, aiming to describe the gravitational interaction between the white dwarf (WD) and the wind from the Mira star, the key phenomenon driving the symbiotic activity and the formation of nebulae in such systems. We present high-resolution ALMA maps of the 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 lines, the 0.9 mm continuum distribution, and some high-excitation molecular lines in R Aqr. The maps, which have resolutions ranging between 40 milliarcsecond (mas) and less than 20 mas, probe the circumstellar regions at suborbital scales as the distance between the stars is ~ 40 mas. Our observations show the gravitational effects of the secondary on the stellar wind. The AGB star was identified in our maps from the continuum and molecular line data, and we estimated the probable position of the secondary from a new estimation of the orbital parameters. The (preliminary) comparison of our maps with theoretical predictions is surprisingly satisfactory and the main expected gravitational effects are directly mapped for the first time. We find a strong focusing in the equatorial plane of the resulting wind, which shows two plumes in opposite directions that have different velocities and very probably correspond to the expected double spiral due to the interaction. Our continuum maps show the very inner regions of the nascent bipolar jets, at scales of some AU. Continuum maps obtained with the highest resolution show the presence of a clump that very probably corresponds to the emission of the ionized surroundings of the WD and of a bridge of material joining both stars, which is likely material flowing from the AGB primary to the accretion disk around the WD secondary., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics. 7 pages, 6 figures

We present new high angular resolution interferometer observations of the v=0 J=14-13 and 15-14 SiS lines towards IRC+10216, carried out with CARMA and ALMA. The maps, with angular resolutions of ~0.25"and 0.55", reveal (1) an extended, roughly uniform, and weak emission with a size of ~0.5", (2) a component elongated approximately along the East-West direction peaking at ~0.13" and 0.17" at both sides of the central star, and (3) two blue- and red-shifted compact components peaking around 0.07" to the NW of the star. We have modeled the emission with a 3D radiation transfer code finding that the observations cannot be explained only by thermal emission. Several maser clumps and one arc-shaped maser feature arranged from 5 to 20R* from the central star, in addition to a thin shell-like maser structure at ~13R* are required to explain the observations. This maser emitting set of structures accounts for 75% of the total emission while the other 25% is produced by thermally excited molecules. About 60% of the maser emission comes from the extended emission and the rest from the set of clumps and the arc. The analysis of a time monitoring of these and other SiS and 29SiS lines carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope from 2015 to present suggests that the intensity of some spectral components of the maser emission strongly depends on the stellar pulsation while other components show a mild variability. We are studying a class of binary post-AGB stars that seem to be systematically surrounded by equatorial disks and slow outflows. Although the rotating dynamics had only been well identified in three cases, the study of such structures is thought to be fundamental to the understanding of the formation of nebulae around evolved stars. We present ALMA maps of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 lines in one of these sources, IRAS08544-4431. We analyzed the data by means of nebula models, which account for the expectedly composite source and can reproduce the data. From our modeling, we estimated the main nebula parameters, including the structure and dynamics and the density and temperature distributions. We discuss the uncertainties of the derived values and, in particular, their dependence on the distance. Our observations reveal the presence of an equatorial disk in rotation; a low-velocity outflow is also found, probably formed of gas expelled from the disk. The main characteristics of our observations and modeling of IRAS08544-4431 are similar to those of better studied objects, confirming our interpretation. The disk rotation indicates a total central mass of about 1.8 Mo, for a distance of 1100 pc. The disk is found to be relatively extended and has a typical diameter of ~ 4 10^16 cm. The total nebular mass is ~ 2 10^-2 Mo, of which ~ 90% corresponds to the disk. Assuming that the outflow is due to mass loss from the disk, we derive a disk lifetime of ~ 10000 yr. The disk angular momentum is found to be comparable to that of the binary system at present. Assuming that the disk angular momentum was transferred from the binary system, as expected, the high values of the disk angular momentum in this and other similar disks suggest that the size of the stellar orbits has significantly decreased as a consequence of disk formation., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted by A&A

ALMA is providing us essential information on where certain molecules form. Observing where these molecules emission arises from, the physical conditions of the gas, and how this relates with the presence of other species allows us to understand the formation of many species, and to significantly improve our knowledge of the chemistry that occurs in the space. We studied the molecular distribution of NaCN around IRC +10216, a molecule detected previously, but whose origin is not clear. High angular resolution maps allow us to model the abundance distribution of this molecule and check suggested formation paths. We modeled the emission of NaCN assuming local thermal equilibrium (LTE) conditions. These profiles were fitted to azimuthal averaged intensity profiles to obtain an abundance distribution of NaCN. We found that the presence of NaCN seems compatible with the presence of CN, probably as a result of the photodissociation of HCN, in the inner layers of the ejecta of IRC +10216. However, similar as for CH 3 CN, current photochemical models fail to reproduce this CN reservoir. We also found that the abundance peak of NaCN appears at a radius of 3 x 10 15 cm, approximately where the abundance of NaCl, suggested to be the parent species, starts to decay. However, the abundance ratio shows that the NaCl abundance is lower than that obtained for NaCN. We expect that the LTE assumption might result in NaCN abundances higher than the real ones. During their late pulsating phase, AGB stars expel most of their mass in the form of massive dusty envelopes, an event that largely controls the composition of interstellar matter. The envelopes, however, are distant and opaque to visible and NIR radiation: Their structure remains poorly known and the mass-loss process poorly understood. Millimeter-wave interferometry is the optimal investigative tool for this purpose. The circumstellar envelope IRC +10 216 and its central star, the C-rich TP-AGB star closest to the Sun, are the best objects for such an investigation. Two years ago, we reported on IRAM 30-m telescope CO(2-1) line emission observations in that envelope (HPBW 11"). We now report much higher angular resolution observations of CO(2-1), CO(1-0), CN(2-1) and C$_4$H(24-23) made with the SMA, PdB and ALMA interferometers (with synthesized half-power beamwidths of 3", 1" and 0.3", respectively). Although the envelope appears more intricate at high resolution, its prevailing structure remains a pattern of thin, nearly concentric shells. Outside the small (r<0.3") dust formation zone, the gas appears to expand radially at a constant velocity, 14.5 km/s, with small turbulent motions. Based on that property, we have reconstructed the 3-D structure of the outer envelope and have derived the gas temperature and density radial profiles in the inner (r<25") envelope. The over-dense shells have spherical or slightly oblate shapes and typically extend over a few steradians, implying isotropic mass loss. The regular spacing of shells in the outer envelope supports the model of a binary star system with a period of 700 years and a near face-on elliptical orbit. The companion fly-by triggers enhanced episodes of mass loss near periastron. The densification of the shell pattern observed in the central part of the envelope suggests a more complex scenario for the last few thousand years., Comment: 22 pages, 28 figures. Linear carbon chains are common in various types of astronomical molecular sources. Possible formation mechanisms involve both bottom-up and top-down routes. We have carried out a combined observational and modeling study of the formation of carbon chains in the C-star envelope IRC+10216, where the polymerization of acetylene and hydrogen cyanide induced by ultraviolet photons can drive the formation of linear carbon chains of increasing length. We have used ALMA to map the emission of 3 mm rotational lines of the hydrocarbon radicals C2H, C4H, and C6H, and the CN-containing species CN, C3N, HC3N, and HC5N with an angular resolution of 1". The spatial distribution of all these species is a hollow, 5-10" wide, spherical shell located at a radius of 10-20" from the star, with no appreciable emission close to the star. Our observations resolve the broad shell of carbon chains into thinner sub-shells which are 1-2" wide and not fully concentric, indicating that the mass loss process has been discontinuous and not fully isotropic. The radial distributions of the species mapped reveal subtle differences: while the hydrocarbon radicals have very similar radial distributions, the CN-containing species show more diverse distributions, with HC3N appearing earlier in the expansion and the radical CN extending later than the rest of the species. The observed morphology can be rationalized by a chemical model in which the growth of polyynes is mainly produced by rapid gas-phase chemical reactions of C2H and C4H radicals with unsaturated hydrocarbons, while cyanopolyynes are mainly formed from polyynes in gas-phase reactions with CN and C3N radicals., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We aim to study the presence of both rotation and expansion in post-AGB nebulae, in particular around IW Car, a binary post-AGB star that was suspected to be surrounded by a Keplerian disk. We obtained high-quality ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 lines in IW Car. The maps were analyzed by means of a simplified model of CO emission, based on those used for similar objects. Our observations clearly show the presence of gas components in rotation, in an equatorial disk, and expansion, which shows an hourglass-like structure with a symmetry axis perpendicular to the rotation plane and is probably formed of material extracted from the disk. Our modeling can reproduce the observations and shows moderate uncertainties. The rotation velocity corresponds to a central stellar mass of approximately 1 Mo. We also derive the total mass of the molecule-rich nebula, found to be of ~ 4 10e-3 Mo; the outflow is approximately eight times less massive than the disk. From the kinematical age of the outflow and the mass values derived for both components, we infer a (future) lifetime of the disk of approximately 5000--10000 yr., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures. The mechanism behind the shaping of bipolar planetary nebulae is still poorly understood. Accurately tracing the molecule-rich equatorial regions of post-AGB stars can give valuable insight into the ejection mechanisms at work. We investigate the physical conditions, structure and velocity field of the dense molecular region of the planetary nebula NGC 6302 by means of ALMA band 7 interferometric maps. The high spatial resolution of the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO J=3-2 ALMA data allows for an analysis of the geometry of the ejecta in unprecedented detail. We built a spatio-kinematical model of the molecular region with the software SHAPE and performed detailed non-LTE calculations of excitation and radiative transfer with the SHAPEMOL plug-in. We find that the molecular region consists of a massive ring out of which a system of fragments of lobe walls emerge and enclose the base of the lobes visible in the optical. The general properties of this region are in agreement with previous works, although the much greater spatial resolution of the data allows for a very detailed description. We confirm that the mass of the molecular region is 0.1 M$_{\odot}$. Additionally, we report a previously undetected component at the nebular equator, an inner, younger ring inclined $\sim$60$^\circ$ with respect to the main ring, showing a characteristic radius of 7.5$\times$10$^{16}$ cm, a mass of 2.7$\times$10$^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$, and a counterpart in optical images of the nebula. This inner ring has the same kinematical age as the northwest optical lobes, implying it was ejected approximately at the same time, hundreds of years after the ejection of the bulk of the molecular ring-like region. We present new high-quality ALMA observations of the Red Rectangle (a well known post-AGB object) in C17O J=6-5 and H13CN J=4-3 line emission and results from a new reduction of already published 13CO J=3-2 data. A detailed model fitting of all the molecular line data, including previous maps and single-dish spectra, was performed using a sophisticated code. These observations and the corresponding modeling allowed us to deepen the analysis of the nebular properties. We also stress the uncertainties in the model fitting. We confirm the presence of a rotating equatorial disk and an outflow, which is mainly formed of gas leaving the disk. The mass of the disk is ~ 0.01 Mo, and that of the CO-rich outflow is ~ 10 times smaller. High temperatures of ~ 100 K are derived for most components. From comparison of the mass values, we roughly estimate the lifetime of the rotating disk, which is found to be of about 10000 yr. Taking data of a few other post-AGB composite nebulae into account, we find that the lifetimes of disks around post-AGB stars typically range between 5000 and more than 20000 yr. The angular momentum of the disk is found to be high, ~ 9 Mo AU km/s, which is comparable to that of the stellar system at present. Our observations of H13CN show a particularly wide velocity dispersion and indicate that this molecule is only abundant in the inner Keplerian disk, at ~ 60 AU from the stellar system. We suggest that HCN is formed in a dense photodissociation region (PDR) due to the UV excess known to be produced by the stellar system, following chemical mechanisms that are well established for interstellar medium PDRs and disks orbiting young stars. Our knowledge of the chemical properties of the circumstellar ejecta of the most massive evolved stars is particularly poor. We aim to study the chemical characteristics of the prototypical yellow hypergiant star, IRC +10420. For this purpose, we obtained full line surveys at 1 and 3mm atmospheric windows. We have identified 106 molecular emission lines from 22 molecular species. Approximately half of the molecules detected are N-bearing species, in particular HCN, HNC, CN, NO, NS, PN, and N2H+. We used rotational diagrams to derive the density and rotational temperature of the different molecular species detected. We introduced an iterative method that allows us to take moderate line opacities into account. We have found that IRC +10420 presents high abundances of the N-bearing molecules compared with O-rich evolved stars. This result supports the presence of a N-rich chemistry, expected for massive stars. Our analysis also suggests a decrease of the 12C/13C ratio from \gtrsim 7 to \sim 3.7 in the last 3800 years, which can be directly related to the nitrogen enrichment observed. In addition, we found that SiO emission presents a significant intensity decrease for high-J lines when compared with older observations. Radiative transfer modeling shows that this variation can be explained by a decrease in the infrared (IR) flux of the dust. CONTEXT: Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are in one of the latest evolutionary stages of low to intermediate-mass stars. Their vigorous mass loss has a significant effect on the stellar evolution, and is a significant source of heavy elements and dust grains for the interstellar medium. The mass-loss rate can be well traced by carbon monoxide (CO) line emission. AIMS: We present new Herschel HIFI and IRAM 30m telescope CO line data for a sample of 53 galactic AGB stars. The lines cover a fairly large range of excitation energy from the $J=1\to0$ line to the $J=9\to8$ line, and even the $J=14\to13$ line in a few cases. We perform radiative transfer modelling for 38 of these sources to estimate their mass-loss rates. METHODS: We used a radiative transfer code based on the Monte Carlo method to model the CO line emission. We assume spherically symmetric circumstellar envelopes that are formed by a constant mass-loss rate through a smoothly accelerating wind. RESULTS: We find models that are consistent across a broad range of CO lines for most of the stars in our sample, i.e., a large number of the circumstellar envelopes can be described with a constant mass-loss rate. We also find that an accelerating wind is required to fit, in particular, the higher-J lines and that a velocity law will have a significant effect on the model line intensities. The results cover a wide range of mass-loss rates ($\sim 10^{-8}$ to $2\times 10^{-5}~\mathrm{M}_\odot~\mathrm{ yr}^{-1}$) and gas expansion velocities (2 to $21.5$ km s$^{-1}$), and include M-, S-, and C-type AGB stars. Our results generally agree with those of earlier studies, although we tend to find slightly lower mass-loss rates by about 40%, on average. IRC+10216 is a circumstellar envelope around a carbon-rich evolved star which contains a large variety of molecules. According to interferometric observations, molecules are distributed either concentrated around the central star or as a hollow shell with a radius of 15". We present ALMA Cycle 0 band 6 observations of the J=14-13 rotational transition of CH3CN in IRC+10216, obtained with an angular resolution of 0.76x0.61". The bulk of the emission is distributed as a hollow shell located at just 2" from the star, with a void of emission in the central region up to a radius of 1". This spatial distribution is markedly different from those found to date in this source for other molecules. Our analysis indicate that methyl cyanide is not formed neither in the stellar photosphere nor far in the outer envelope, but at radial distances as short as 1-2", reaching a maximum abundance of 0.02 molecules cm-3 at 2" from the star. Standard chemical models of IRC+10216 predict that the bulk of CH3CN molecules should be present at a radius of 15", where other species such as polyyne radicals and cyanopolyynes are observed, with an additional inner component within 1" from the star. We report the detection during the ALMA Cycle 0 of SiS rotational lines in high-vibrational states as well as SiO and SiC$_2$ lines in their ground vibrational state, towards IRC+10216. The spatial distribution of these molecules shows compact emission for SiS and a more extended emission for SiO and SiC$_2$, and also proves the existence of an increase in the SiC$_2$ emission at the outer shells of the circumstellar envelope. We analyze the excitation conditions of the vibrationally excited SiS using the population diagram technique and we used a large velocity gradient model to compare with the observations. We found moderate discrepancies between the observations and the models that could be explained if SiS lines detected are optically thick. Additionally, the line profiles of the detected rotational lines in the high energy vibrational states show a decreasing linewidth with increasing energy levels. This may evidence that these lines could be excited only in the inner shells, i.e. the densest and hottest, of the circumstellar envelope of IRC+10216., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures. A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at ~350 GHz. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations from the 2014 Long Baseline Campaign in dust continuum and spectral line emission from the HL Tau region. The continuum images at wavelengths of 2.9, 1.3, and 0.87 mm have unprecedented angular resolutions of 0.075 arcseconds (10 AU) to 0.025 arcseconds (3.5 AU), revealing an astonishing level of detail in the circumstellar disk surrounding the young solar analogue HL Tau, with a pattern of bright and dark rings observed at all wavelengths. By fitting ellipses to the most distinct rings, we measure precise values for the disk inclination (46.72pm0.05 degrees) and position angle (+138.02pm0.07 degrees). We obtain a high-fidelity image of the 1.0 mm spectral index ($\alpha$), which ranges from $\alpha\sim2.0$ in the optically-thick central peak and two brightest rings, increasing to 2.3-3.0 in the dark rings. The dark rings are not devoid of emission, we estimate a grain emissivity index of 0.8 for the innermost dark ring and lower for subsequent dark rings, consistent with some degree of grain growth and evolution. Additional clues that the rings arise from planet formation include an increase in their central offsets with radius and the presence of numerous orbital resonances. At a resolution of 35 AU, we resolve the molecular component of the disk in HCO+ (1-0) which exhibits a pattern over LSR velocities from 2-12 km/s consistent with Keplerian motion around a ~1.3 solar mass star, although complicated by absorption at low blue-shifted velocities. So far, only one rotating disk has been clearly identified and studied in AGB or post-AGB objects (in the Red Rectangle), by means of observations with high spectral and spatial resolution. However, disks are thought to play a key role in the late stellar evolution and are suspected to surround many evolved stars. We aim to extend our knowledge on these structures. We present interferometric observations of CO J=2-1 emission from the nebula surrounding the post-AGB star AC Her, a source belonging to a class of objects that share properties with the Red Rectangle and show hints of Keplerian disks. We clearly detect the Keplerian dynamics of a second disk orbiting an evolved star. Its main properties (size, temperature, central mass) are derived from direct interpretation of the data and model fitting. With this we confirm that there are disks orbiting the stars of this relatively wide class of post-AGB objects, Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We report the detection in IRC+10216 of lines of HNC $J$=3-2 pertaining to 9 excited vibrational states with energies up to $\sim$5300 K. The spectrum, observed with ALMA, also shows a surprising large number of narrow, unidentified lines that arise in the vicinity of the star. The HNC data are interpreted through a 1D--spherical non--local radiative transfer model, coupled to a chemical model that includes chemistry at thermochemical equilibrium for the innermost regions and reaction kinetics for the external envelope. Although unresolved by the present early ALMA data, the radius inferred for the emitting region is $\sim$0.06'' (i.e., $\simeq$ 3 stellar radii), similar to the size of the dusty clumps reported by IR studies of the innermost region ($r <$ 0.3''). The derived abundance of HNC relative to H$_2$ is $10^{-8} <$ $\chi$(HNC) $< 10^{-6}$, and drops quickly where the gas density decreases and the gas chemistry is dominated by reaction kinetics. Merging HNC data with that of molecular species present throughout the inner envelope, such as vibrationally excited HCN, SiS, CS, or SiO, should allow us to characterize the physical and chemical conditions in the dust formation zone., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We aim to study equatorial disks in rotation and axial outflows in post-AGB objects, as to disclose the formation and shaping mechanisms in planetary nebulae. So far, both disks and outflows had not been observed simultaneously. We have obtained high-quality ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 and 12CO J=6-5 line emission in the Red Rectangle, the only post-AGB/protoplanetary object in which a disk in rotation has been mapped up to date. These observations provide an unprecedented description of the complex structure of this source. Together with an equatorial disk in rotation, we find a low-velocity outflow that occupies more or less the region placed between the disk and the optical X-shaped nebula. From our observations and preliminary modeling of the data, we confirm the previously known properties of the disk and obtain a first description of the structure, dynamics, and physical conditions of the outflow., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

There is a group of binary post-AGB stars that show a conspicuous NIR excess, usually assumed to arise from hot dust in very compact possibly rotating disks. These stars are surrounded by significantly fainter nebulae than the "standard", well studied protoplanetary and planetary nebulae (PPNe, PNe). We present high-sensitivity mm-wave observations of CO lines in 24 objects of this type. CO emission is detected in most observed sources and the line profiles show that the emissions very probably come from disks in rotation. We derive typical values of the disk mass between 1e-3 and 1e-2 Mo, about two orders of magnitude smaller than the (total) masses of "standard" PPNe. The high-detection rate (upper limits being in fact not very significant) clearly confirm that the NIR excess of these stars arises from compact disks in rotation, very probably the inner parts of those found here. Low-velocity outflows are also found in about eight objects, with moderate expansion velocities of ~ 10 km/s, to be compared with the velocities of about 100 km/s often found in "standard" PPNe. Except for two sources with complex profiles, the outflowing gas in our objects represents a minor nebular component. Our simple estimates of the disk typical sizes yields values ~ 0.5 - 1 arcsec, i.e. between 5e15 and 3e16 cm. Estimates of the linear momenta carried by the outflows, which can only be performed in a few well studied objects, also yield moderate values, compared with the linear momenta that can be released by the stellar radiation pressure (contrary, again, to the case of the very massive and fast bipolar outflows in "standard" PPNe, that are strongly overluminous). The mass and dynamics of nebulae around various classes of post-AGB stars differ very significantly, and we can expect the formation of PNe with very different properties., Comment: 19 pages, 26 figures

Studying the appearance and properties of bipolar winds is critical to understand the stellar evolution from the AGB to the planetary nebula (PN) phase. Many uncertainties exist regarding the presence and role of binary stellar systems, mainly due to the deficit of conclusive observational evidences. We investigate the extended equatorial distribution around the early bipolar planetary nebula M 2-9 ("Minkowski's Butterfly Nebula") to gather new information on the mechanism of the axial ejections. Interferometric millimeter observations of molecular emission provide the most comprehensive view of the equatorial mass distribution and kinematics in early PNe. Here we present subarcsecond angular-resolution observations of the 12CO J=2-1 line and continuum emission with the Plateau de Bure interferometer. The data reveal two ring-shaped and eccentric structures at the equatorial basis of the two coaxial optical lobes. The two rings were formed during short mass-loss episodes (~ 40 yr), separated by ~ 500 yr. Their positional and dynamical imprints provide evidence of the presence of a binary stellar system at the center, which yields critical information on its orbital characteristics, including a mass estimate for the secondary of ~< 0.2 \ms. The presence of a stellar system with a modest-mass companion at the center of such an elongated bipolar PN strongly supports the binary-based models, because these are more easily able to explain the frequent axisymmetric ejections in PNe., Comment: 8 pages

We present an analysis of the linear polarization of six active galactic nuclei - 0415+379 (3C~111), 0507+179, 0528+134 (OG+134), 0954+658, 1418+546 (OQ+530), and 1637+574 (OS+562). Our targets were monitored from 2007 to 2011 in the observatory-frame frequency range 80-253 GHz, corresponding to a rest-frame frequency range 88-705 GHz. We find average degrees of polarization m_L ~ 2-7%; this indicates that the polarization signals are effectively averaged out by the emitter geometries. We see indication for fairly strong shocks and/or complex, variable emission region geometries in our sources, with compression factors <0.9 and/or changes in viewing angles by >10 deg. An analysis of correlations between source fluxes and polarization parameter points out special cases: the presence of (at least) two distinct emission regions with different levels of polarization (for 0415+379) as well as emission from a single, predominant component (for 0507+179 and 1418+546). Regarding the evolution of flux and polarization, we find good agreement between observations and the signal predicted by "oblique shock in jet" scenarios in one source (1418+546). We attempt to derive rotation measures for all sources, leading to actual measurements for two AGN and upper limits for three sources. We derive values of RM = -39,000 +/- 1,000 (stat) +/- 13,000 (sys) rad/m^2 and RM = 420,000 +/- 10,000 (stat) +/- 110,000 (sys) rad/m^2 for 1418+546 and 1637+574, respectively; these are the highest values reported to date for AGN. These values indicate magnetic field strengths of the order ~0.0001 G. For 0415+379, 0507+179, and 0954+658 we derive upper limits |RM| < 17,000 rad/m^2. From the relation |RM| ~ nu^a we find a = 1.9 +/- 0.3 for 1418+546, in good agreement with a = 2 as expected for a spherical or conical outflow., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. Bipolarity in proto-planetary and planetary nebulae is associated with events occurring in or around their cores. Past infrared observations have revealed the presence of dusty structures around the cores, many in the form of disks. Characterising those dusty disks provides invaluable constraints on the physical processes that govern the final mass expulsion of intermediate-mass stars. We focus this study on the famous M2-9 bipolar nebula, where the moving lighthouse beam pattern indicates the presence of a wide binary. The compact and dense dusty core in the center of the nebula can be studied by means of optical interferometry. M2-9 was observed with VLTI/MIDI at 39-47 m baselines with the UT2-UT3 and UT3-UT4 baseline configurations. These observations are interpreted using a dust radiative transfer Monte Carlo code. A disk-like structure is detected perpendicular to the lobes and a good fit is found with a stratified disk model composed of amorphous silicates. The disk is compact, 25$\times$35 mas at 8$\rm \mu m$, and 37$\times$46 mas at 13$\rm \mu m$. For the adopted distance of 1.2 kpc, the inner rim of the disk is $\sim$15 AU. The mass represents a few percent of the mass found in the lobes. The compactness of the disk puts strong constraints on the binary content of the system, given an estimated orbital period 90-120yr. We derive masses of the binary components between 0.6--1.0M$_{\sun}$ for a white dwarf and 0.6--1.4M$_{\sun}$ for an evolved star. We report optical long-slit spectra and direct imaging (ground-based and with HST) of the pre-planetary nebula (pPN) M2-56 obtained at different epochs. The optical nebula is composed by shock-excited material distributed in two pairs of nested lobes with different sizes and surface brightness. The compact, bright inner lobes (ILs) have an angular size of ~1.5"x1" each and display closed, bow-shaped ends. The extended, faint outer lobes (OLs), which enclose the inner ones, have an agular size of ~13"x10". Within the ILs and the OLs the velocity increases with the distance to the center, however, the ILs show expansion velocities larger than the OLs. Consistent with the large speeds reached by the ILs (of up to ~350 km/s at the tips), we have measured the expansive proper motions of the knots (~0.03 arcsec/yr) by comparing two-epoch HST images. Moreover, we have discovered remarkable changes with time in the continuum and line emission spectrum of M2-56. In 1998, we detected a burst of Halpha emission from the nebula nucleus that is interpreted as an indication of a dense, fast (~350-500 km/s) bipolar wind from the nebula's core (referred to as "F1-wind"). Such a wind has been recently ejected (after 1989) probably as a short-duration mass-loss event. Our data also reveal an optically thick, compact structure (cocoon?) and a HII region around the central star that result from further post-AGB mass-loss after the F1-wind. Recent brightening of the scattered stellar continuum as well as an increase of scattered Halpha emission along the lobes is reported, both results pointing to a decrease of the optical depth of the circumstellar material enshrouding the star. The data presented here unveil the complex post-AGB mass-loss history of this object, whose rapid evolution is driven by multiple episodes of mass outflow, not regularly spaced in time... We have studied the linear polarization of 86 active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the observed frequency range 80-267 GHz (3.7-1.1mm in wavelength), corresponding to rest-frame frequencies 82-738 GHz, with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). The large number of measurements, 441, makes our analysis the largest polarimetric AGN survey in this frequency range to date. We extracted polarization parameters via earth rotation polarimetry with unprecedented median precisions of ~0.1% in polarization fractions and ~1.2 degrees in polarization angles. For 73 of 86 sources we detect polarization at least once. The degrees of polarization are as high as ~19%, with the median over all sources being ~4%. Source fluxes and polarizations are typically highly variable, with fractional variabilities up to ~60%. We find that BLLac sources have on average the highest level of polarization. There appears to be no correlation between degree of polarization and redshift, indicating that there has been no substantial change of polarization properties since z~2.4. Our polarization and spectral index distributions are in good agreement with results found from various samples observed at cm/radio wavelengths; thus our frequency range is likely tracing the signature of synchrotron radiation without noticeable contributions from other emission mechanisms. We have carried out high-angular resolution (1.4") observations in the continuum at 3.1mm and in the N2H+ 1-0, CH3CN 5_k-4_k and 13CS 2-1 lines using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) towards the intermediate mass (IM) protostar IRAS21391+5802 (IC1396N). In addition, we have merged the PdBI images with previous BIMA (continuum data at 1.2mm and 3.1mm) and single-dish (N2H+ 1-0) data to have a comprehensive description of the region. The combination of our data with BIMA and 30m data show that the bipolar outflow associated has completely eroded the initial molecular globule. The 1.2mm and 3.1mm continuum emissions are extended along the outflow axis tracing the warm walls of the biconical cavity. Most of the molecular gas, however, is located in an elongated feature in the direction perpendicular to the outflow. A strong chemical differentiation is detected across the molecular toroid, with the N2H+ 1-0 emission absent in the inner region.This chemical differentiation can be understood in terms of the different gas kinetic temperature. The [CH3CN]/[N2H+] ratio increases by 5 orders of magnitude with gas temperature, for temperatures between 20K and 100K. The CH3CN abundance towards IRAM 2A, the most massive protostellar core, is similar to that found in hot corinos and lower than that expected towards IM and high mass hot cores. This could indicate that IRAM 2A is a low mass or at most Herbig Ae star (IRAM 2A) instead of the precursor of a massive Be star. Alternatively, the low CH3CN abundance could also be the consequence of IRAM 2A being a Class 0/I transition object which has already formed a small photodissociation region (PDR)., Comment: accepted A&A

We aim to study the structure, dynamics and physical conditions of Gomez's Hamburger (IRAS 18059-3211; GoHam). We confirm that GoHam essentially consists of a flaring disk in keplerian rotation around a young, probably pre-MS star. We present high resolution SMA maps of 12CO J=2-1, 13CO J=2-1, 12CO J=3-2, and C17O J=3-2, as well as data on 12CO J=6-5 and the continuum flux at these wavelengths. Spatial resolutions up to 1" are obtained. Except for the C17O data, the dynamical ranges are larger than 10. The maps are compared to a numerical model, which simulates the emission of a rotating disk with the expected general properties of such objects; a very satisfactory fitting of our maps is obtained. The meaning and reliability of our results are thoroughly discussed. Our observations allow measurement of the main properties of GoHam at scales between ~ 1" (~ 5 10^15 cm, for the assumed distance, 300 pc) and the total extent of the nebula, 14". We are able to measure the global structure of the gas-rich disk, which is found to be flaring, and its dynamics, which is clearly dominated by keplerian rotation, with a very small degree of turbulence. The combination of different lines, particularly showing different opacities, allows us to reasonably estimate the distributions of the gas temperature and density. We clearly find a significant and sharp increase in temperature at large distances from the equator, accompanied by a decrease in density of the same order. Finally, we identify and study a condensation in the southern part of the disk that has no counterparts in the rest of the nebula. This condensation is quite extended (about 5 10^15 cm), contains a significant amount of mass (roughly, ~ 6 10^-3 Mo), and seems to be associated with a detectable distortion of the global rotation kinematics., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 1 pdflatex text file, goha.bbl file, aa.cls style file

The yellow hypergiant stars (YHGs) are very massive objects that are expected to pass through periods of intense mass loss during their evolution. Despite of this, massive circumstellar envelopes have been found only in two of them, IRC+10420 and AFGL 2343. The envelopes around these objects and the processes that form them are poorly known. We aim to study the structure, dynamics and chemistry of the envelope around AFGL 2343. We have obtained interferometric maps of the rotational lines 29SiO J= 2-1, HCN J= 1-0 and SO J(K)= 2(2)-1(1) towards AFGL 2343. We have used an LVG excitation model to analyze the new observations and some previously published line profiles of AFGL 2343. The analysis of the observational data and the fitting results show the presence of a thin, hot and dense component within the previously identified CO shell. This component can be associated with recently shocked gas, but it could also be due to a phase of extremely copious mass loss. We suggest that this shell is the responsible for the whole 29SiO emission and significantly contributes to the HCN emission. The presence of such a dense shell rich in SiO can be related with that previously found for IRC+10420, which was also suggested to result from a shock. This may be a common feature in the evolution of these stars, as a consequence of the episodic mass loss periods that they pass during their evolution. We present interferometric observations of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $J$=2$-$1 emission from the butterfly-shaped, young planetary nebula NGC 6302. The high angular resolution and high sensitivity achieved in our observations allow us to resolve the nebula into two distinct kinematic components: (1) a massive expanding torus seen almost edge-on and oriented in the North-South direction, roughly perpendicular to the optical nebula axis. The torus exhibits very complex and fragmentated structure; (2) high velocity molecular knots moving at high velocity, higher than 20 \kms, and located in the optical bipolar lobes. These knots show a linear position-velocity gradient (Hubble-like flow), which is characteristic of fast molecular outflow in young planetary nebulae. From the low but variable $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO $J$=2$-$1 line intensity ratio we conclude that the $^{12}$CO $J$=2$-$1 emission is optically thick over much of the nebula. Using the optically thinner line $^{13}$CO $J$=2$-$1 we estimate a total molecular gas mass of $\sim$ 0.1 M$_\odot$, comparable to the ionized gas mass; the total gas mass of the NGC 6302 nebula, including the massive ionized gas from photon dominated region, is found to be $\sim$ 0.5 M$_\odot$. From radiative transfer modelling we infer that the torus is seen at inclination angle of 75$^\circ$ with respect to the plane of the sky and expanding at velocity of 15 \kms.
