Obesity has been considered a chronic subclinical inflammation. High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and fibrinogen are increasingly associated with cardiovascular risk.To evaluate the ability of anthropometric and body composition indicators in discriminating higher levels of hs-CRP and fibrinogen.130 men (20-59 years) were assessed, having measurement of weight, height, waist circumference (WC), hip and thigh circumferences, sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), coronal diameter (CD) and body composition. Conicity index, waist/height ratio, body mass index, waist/hip ratio, waist/thigh ratio and sagittal index were calculated. It was considered as the cutoff point for hs-CRP values ≥ 0.12 mg/dL and for fibrinogen the 50th percentile of the evaluated sample.Sagittal index (r = 0.280), waist/thigh ratio (r = 0.233) and waist/height ratio (r = 0.233) showed the best correlation with hs-CRP (p0.01). Conicity index (r = 0.305) and waist/height ratio (r = 0.279) showed the best correlation with fibrinogen (p0.01). In ROC analysis, the SAD (0.698 ± 0.049) and the conicity index (0.658 ± 0.048) had greater ability to discriminate cardiovascular risk through higher levels of hs-CRP and fibrinogen, respectively (p0.01). The cutoff points of 30 cm, 89.9 cm and 20.5 cm were the ones that reached largest sum between sensitivity and specificity values for the CD, WC and SAD, respectively. The SAD and the conicity index demonstrated a greater ability to detect higher levels of hs-CRP and fibrinogen, respectively, in apparently healthy adult men.

Introduction: An accurate estimate of body composition is important in assessing and monitoring the nutritional status of adolescents. Objectives: To compare the accuracy of 2 electrical bioimpedance devices with that of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to predict body fat in Brazilian adolescents. Methods: We evaluated 500 adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years, stratified by sex and divided into overweight and non-overweight groups. The percentage of body fat (%BF) was estimated using 2 types of electrical bioimpedance devices: BIA1 (horizontal tetrapolar bioimpedance equipment) and BIA2 (vertical 8-electrode bioimpedance equipment), as well as by DXA. A Bland-Altman plot was used to calculate the total errors and standard errors of estimate. Results: Considering BMI for age, 19.4% were overweight and 47.4% as assessed by %BF of DXA were overweight. The %BF estimated by BIA2 correlated well (p < 0.05) with the %BF predicted by DXA, and only the total errors for BIA2 in the overweight group were acceptable (≤2.5%). The standard errors of estimate was

The obesity is a chronic disease in which environmental factors can be involved in the etiology. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for obesity in children at Viçosa county, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Case-control study with 50 eutrophic and 50 obese children, paired according to gender, age and socioeconomic condition. This sample was selected based on nutritional evaluation of 2,074 children aged 6 to 8 years who were attending either private and public urban schools in Viçosa. Children’s and parents’ nutritional states were classified according to CDC (2000) and WHO (1998), respectively. Based on questionnaire application, the following data were collected: family structure, socioeconomic level, obesity presence and dyslipidemia in close family relatives, breast feeding, birth weight, child’s gestation conditions, feeding habits and the lifestyles of both children and parents. According to the multiple logistic regression analysis, the risk factors to childhood obesity were: the mother’s overweight (BMI ≥ 25 Kg/m²; OR: 70.49; IC: 2.17 - 182.74), the parents’ constant limitation on the foods consumed by the child (OR: 62.91; IC: 5.37 - 92.08) and frequent snack the child uses to consume in commercial establishments (OR: 10.44; IC: 1.30 - 83.92), which are mostly represented by highly energetic foods, such as fried salty foods and soft drinks (78.6%). The success of the childhood obesity treatment in this population includes the parents’ decreased overweight, mainly the mother’s, and their consciousness of the adequate feeding habit, because family’s undesirable practices contribute to the permanence of obesity in childhood, such as constant limitation of ingested foods and frequent snacks in commercial establishments.

The objective of this study was to compare the anthropometry, body composition and biochemical profile between eutrophic and obese children, as well as to relate the children’s nutritional state and body composition to those of their respective parents. A control-case study was carried out with 50 eutrophic and 50 obese children paired according to gender, age, socioeconomic condition, and selected from the nutritional evaluation of 2 074 children aged 6 to 8 years, attending public and private urban schools in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The measurements evaluated were weight, height, circumferences (waist and hip) and thickness skinfolds (triceps and subscapular). The serum levels of glucose, total-cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and hemoglobin in the children were evaluated. The obese children presented a larger body size and higher percentage for total body fat as well as its accumulation in the central region, and higher serum levels for triglycerides (p < 0.05). For all biochemical parameters, except for hemoglobin and HDL, there occurred a positive correlation with the located fat in the central region as well as with the total body fat in children (p < 0.05). The obese mothers showing high percentage of body fat and its accumulation in the central region rather tend to have children with these characteristics (p < 0,05). The highest number of the close relatives who are obese and present dyslipidemia is highlighted in the obese children (p < 0.05). This study evidences the differences concerning to the distribution of the body fat and lipid profile among eutrophic and obese children, as well as the strong influence of the maternal obesity upon child’s obesity Comparación de las variables antropométricas y bioquímicas entre niños y sus padres.

Dietary records used for food consumption evaluation in adolescents: comparison among methods. Given the difficulties surrounding evaluating food consumption, specifically during adolescence, the goal of the present study was to compare different dietary assessment instruments used for this age group. The study was carried out with a group of 60 female adolescents between 14 and 18 years of age. Three repetitions of 24-Hour Recall, three-day Dietary Records and Purchase List of the adolescents and their families were collected. The 24 Hour Recall and Dietary Records had good repeatability, allowing to infer that only one application of oneof these instruments was capable of reflecting the ingestion average (or median) of the study population group. The Purchase List allowed us to know the food availability within the context of the individual’s conditions. All dietary assessment instruments may contain errors, therefore the choice of the most adequate method must rely on the objectives of the study being developed, as well as the study population.

A transversal study was carried out with 101 18-to 24-month old infants, attended at public health services in Viçosa, MG, Brazil, The objective of this study was to verify the prevalence and factors associated to anemia and iron deficiency among infants. Data were obtained by interviews of the infants’ parents or guardians at their households. Hemoglobin and ferritin analyses were peformed using an automatic counter and the immunometric dosage method, respectively. Feces samples were analyzed by the Hoffman, Faust and Ritchie methods. Anemia was characterized by hemoglobin concentration and iron deficiency by ferritin. For dietary practice, the 24-hour recall was used. Linear regression and logistics analyses were conducted to evaluate the variables associated to hemoglobin and iron deficiency, respectively. Anemia, iron deficiency and intestinal parasite prevalences were 30.1; 38.4, and 21%, respectively. The number of household members, age infants were introduced to juices/or fruit, mother’s level of instruction, and total breastfeeding period were associated to the levels of hemoglobin plasma. The associated variables for iron deficiency were milk consumption near meals and number of household members.

This study evaluated factors associated with the consumption of breast milk (BM), infant formula (IF) and cow milk (CM) in children. This was a cohort study with 256 children followed-up at the 1st, 4th and 6th month of age in Viçosa (MG), Brazil. With respect to CM and IF, consumption was recorded regardless of BM intake. Regarding BM, only exclusive or predominant consumption was considered. From the 1st to the 6th month, an increase was recorded in the number of children who did not consume BM exclusively or predominantly (31.6%), as well as the consumption of CM (27.2%) and IF (9.3%). BM was associated with pacifier use at 1st month, and mother's employment status and pacifier use in the 4th and 6th month. Pacifier use was a risk factor for IF consumption in every month, while belonging to the lower income group was inversely associated in the 6th month. As for CM, the number of prenatal visits was a risk factor in every month, the mother's employment status and use of pacifier in the 4th month, family income, mother's employment status, low birth weight, number of prenatal visits and pacifier use in the 6th month. Since the 1st month, the introduction of other milk types is high, revealing that there is still much to go to ensure exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the Bolsa Família Program (PBF) on food consumption in the northeast and southeast regions of Brazil. The database was obtained from the individual food consumption module of the Household Budget Survey conducted in 2008-09. Consumption was assessed through two food records. The food was categorized into four groups: fresh or minimally processed food; culinary ingredients; processed food; and ultra-processed food. To analyze the impact, the propensity score matching method was used, which compares the individual recipients and non-recipients of the PBF in relation to a group of socioeconomic characteristics. After the propensity score was calculated, the impact of the PBF was estimated through the nearest-neighbor matching algorithm. In both regions, more than 60% of the daily total calories consumed by PBF recipients came from foods that had not undergone industrial processing. The recipients of PBF had a low level of consumption of processed and ultra-processed food in both regions, and an increased level of consumption of fresh or minimally processed food in the northeast. The results indicate the importance of adopting intersectoral policies in parallel to the PBF in order to strengthen healthy eating practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Stature is an important variable in several indices of nutritional status that are applicable to elderly persons. However, stature is difficult or impossible to measure in elderly because they are often unable to maintain the standing position. A alternative is the use of estimated height from measurements of knee height measure. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the formula proposed by Chumlea et al. (1985) based on the knee of a Caucasian population to estimate the height and its application in calculation of body mass index in community-dwelling older people residents in Vinosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: The sample included 621 elderly aged 60 years old and older, living in the community. Measures of weight, height and knee height (KH) were taken and Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated with the measured weight and estimated. The Student's t-test was used for comparison of measurements of height between the genders. For the comparison of estimated and measured values it was used paired t-test and also the methodology proposed by Bland and Altman to compare the difference between measurements. To evaluate the agreement between the classifications for BMI was used Cohen's Kappa. Results: The average values obtained from KH were higher than those measured in the whole sample and women. There underestimation of BMI in females and also in the whole. Conclusions: The present results suggest that the equation Chumlea was not adequate to estimate the height of the sample in question, especially for women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of timing of clamping and obstetric, biological and socioeconomic factors on the iron stores of full-term newborns. METHODS: Cross-sectional study between October 2011 and July 2012 in which hematological parameters were evaluated for newborns in Viçosa, MG, Southeastern Brazil. It involved collecting 7 mL of umbilical cord blood from 144 full-term not underweight newborns. The parameters investigated were complete blood count, serum iron, ferritin and C-reactive protein. The time of umbilical cord clamping was measured using a digital timer without interfering in the procedures of childbirth. The birth data were collected from Live Birth Certificates and other information was obtained from the mother through a questionnaire applied in the first month postpartum. Analysis of multiple linear regression was then used to estimate the influence of biological, obstetrics and socioeconomic factors on the ferritin levels at birth. RESULTS: The median ferritin was 130.3 µg/L (n = 129, minimum = 16.4; maximum = 420.5 µg/L), the mean serum iron was 137.9 μg/dL (n = 144, SD = 39.29) and mean hemoglobin was 14.7 g/dL (n = 144, SD = 1.47). The median time of cord clamping was 36 seconds, ranging between 7 and 100. The bivariate analysis detected an association between ferritin levels and color of the child, timing clamping of 60 seconds, type of delivery, the presence of gestational diabetes and per capita family income. In multivariate analysis, the variables per capita income, number of antenatal visits and length at birth accounted for 22.0% of variation in ferritin levels. CONCLUSIONS: Iron stores at birth were influenced by biological, obstetric and social characteristics. Tackling anemia should involve creating policies aimed at reducing social inequalities, improving the quality of antenatal care, as well as implementing a criterion of delayed clamping of the umbilical cord within the guidelines of labor. Objective. To evaluate the influence of the weight gain rate at 4–6 months on nutritional status and body composition in children between 4 and 7 years of age. Methods. Retrospective cohort study, sample of 257 children. Data collection was performed in two stages, with the first relating to retrospective data of weight gain from birth to the first 4–6 months of life in the patient records. Measurements of weight, height, waist circumference, and body composition in children between ages 4 and 7 years were obtained. Nutritional status was assessed by the BMI/age. Control variables, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, lifestyle, and sociodemographics, were studied. Descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression were performed. Results. In the nutritional status assessment, the prevalence of overweight observed was 24.9%. After adjusting for control variables, it was found that the increase of the WGR at 4–6 months of age explained the occurrence of higher BMI/age, percentage of total body fat, body fat percentage in the android region, and waist circumference in children between 4 and 7 years of age. Conclusion. The increase of the WGR in the firstmonths of life can lead to the occurrence of higher values of parameters of nutritional status and body composition in later life. Background: Low calcium:phosphorus ratios (Ca:P ratio) in habitual diet have been observed worldwide, and it has been shown to be harmful to the bone health of the population. However, no study associating this ratio with obesity was found. Thus, considering that the intake of calcium and phosphorus will generate a ratio between them, which may be associated with obesity, this research seeks at evaluating the relation between obesity and the Ca:P ratio in the habitual diet of adults. Methods: Cross-sectional population-based epidemiological study with stratified and systematic sampling. The sample was composed of 506 adults, aged between 18 and 60 years, of both genders. Information on socioeconomic and demographic conditions was obtained through questionnaires completed during home visits, where anthropometric and dietary evaluations were also conducted. Results: In the habitual diet consumed by the study subjects, a Ca:P ratio above the median of 0.57 reduced the risk of central obesity based on waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (OR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.41 - 0.92). Habitual dietary intake of calcium (OR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.43 - 0.97) and dairy products (OR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.37 - 0.84) above the median value (485.4 mg and 0.9 servings, respectively) was found to be a protective factor related to central obesity based on WHtR. Conclusions: Values above the median for the Ca:P ratio found in the habitual diet were negatively associated with central obesity based on WHtR. In addition, calcium and dairy consumption were negatively associated with central obesity based on WHtR. Therefore, higher Ca:P ratios contributed to a lower prevalence of central obesity. Objectives: To evaluate the per capita availability of energy and macronutrients in the home and frequency of food consumption by adolescents and to relate them with anthropometric and biochemical variables, as well as verify if the eating habits of parents are associated to the children. Methods: We evaluated the weight, height, body fat (%BF), glucose, insulin, triglycerides, total cholesterol (TC) and fractions of 120 adolescents. We evaluated also the eating habits of adolescents and their parents. Results: Adolescents with more than 35 % of available lipids had 9.1-fold higher chances of presenting alterations in TC. Those who replaced the main meals for snacks had 3.66, 4.66 and 2.82 higher chances of presenting alterationsin %BF, insulin and triglycerides, respectively. The daily consumption of fruit was considered as a protective factor in relation to hyperinsulinemia. There was a similar feeding behavior among adolescents and their mothers. Conclusion: The results suggest the importance of specific attention to adolescent health, focused on family education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to analyze body fat anthropometric equations and electrical bioimpedance analysis (BIA) in the prediction of cardiovascular risk factors in eutrophic and overweight adolescents. 210 adolescents were divided into eutrophic group (G1) and overweight group (G2).The percentage of body fat (% BF) was estimated using 10 body fat anthropometric equations and 2 BIA. We measured lipid profiles, uric acid, insulin, fasting glucose, homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and blood pressure. We found that 76.7% of the adolescents exhibited inadequacy of at least one biochemical parameter or clinical cardiovascular risk. Higher values of triglycerides (TG) (P = 0.001), insulin, and HOMA-IR (P < 0.001) were observed in the G2 adolescents. Inmultivariate linear regression analysis, the % BF fromequation (5) was associated with TG, diastolic blood pressure, and insulin in G1. Among the G2 adolescents, the % BF estimated by (5) and (9) was associated with LDL, TG, insulin, and the HOMA-IR. Body fat anthropometric equations were associated with cardiovascular risk factors and should be used to assess the nutritional status of adolescents. In this study, equation (5) was associated with a higher number of cardiovascular risk factors independent of the nutritional status of adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RED blood cell transfusion , *PREMATURE infants , *NEONATAL intensive care , *CROSS-sectional method , *CHI-square distribution - Abstract
Objective: This study analyzed the factors that are associated with the need for packed red blood cell transfusions in premature infants in a neonatal intensive care unit. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study of secondary data from premature infants who were admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit between 2008 and 2010. Premature infants with low birth weight were included. Packed red blood cell transfusion was the dependent variable. Pearson's Chi-square or Fisher's exact tests were used for data analysis, and the median, minimum, and maximum values were calculated. Prevalence ratios were calculated using the Poisson regression and Pearson correlation coefficient. Linear regression analyses were performed. P < 0.05 was considered to be significant. Results: We examined 254 premature infants, and 39.4% of this sample received packed red blood cells. Transfusions were 70% less prevalent in premature infants who were born at ≥32 weeks of gestation, and 191% more prevalent in infants who exhibited late-onset neonatal sepsis. The number of transfusions per patient was negatively correlated with gestational age and positively correlated with late-onset neonatal sepsis. A gestational age <32 weeks and late-onset neonatal sepsis explained 45% of the transfusions (p<0.0001). Conclusions: Premature infants with a gestational age <32 weeks and who developed late-onset neonatal sepsis exhibited a greater need for packed red blood cell transfusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background. Because of the high prevalence of irondeficiency anemia in Brazil, individual control measures tend to be ineffective, and fortification of foods with iron is considered the most effective method to fight anemia. Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness of fortification of drinking water with iron and vitamin C in the reduction of anemia in children in day-care centers in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Methods. This before-and-after study evaluated 318 children aged 6 to 74 months. Identification data and data on socioeconomic variables were collected; anthropometric and biochemical measurements were performed before and after 5 months of fortification of water with 5 mg of elemental iron and 50 mg of ascorbic acid per liter. The fortified water was used for drinking and cooking at the day-care center. Wilcoxon's nonparametric test was used to evaluate the differences in continuous variables, and McNemar's test was used to compare the prevalence rates of anemia. Results. The prevalence of anemia decreased significantly from 29.3% before fortification to 7.9% at the end of the study, with a significant increase in hemoglobin levels. Reductions in the prevalence rates of stunting and underweight were observed. Conclusions.
