slides, and draft transcript of the presentation given at the XXIIe Colloque de paléographie latine, Prague (14-16 September). Brief abstract: Our proposal intends to examine the documentary practices and uses found in the context of rural, secular communities in the north-western Iberian Peninsula from the late eleventh to the thirteen centuries. These practices will be considered in contrast with those from urban, mostly ecclesiastical, communities. We will assess the form and function of secular diplomas made by rural scribes, before considering the graphic systems and styles used in communities of professional scribes with different levels of literacy. Finally, the mobility of practices and their authors will be evaluated, taking the parish church and the rural monastery as meeting points. Ultimately, this will provide a clearer picture of the connections between rural and urban scribes and their communities, mutual exchanges, reception of new palaeographical and codicological developments and cultural interaction. This innovative assessment of the evolution of documentary practices in north-western Iberia will lead to a better understanding of writing practices across all levels of society. Proposal: Within the context of the transition from Visigothic to Caroline minuscule from the end of the eleventh century until well into the twelfth century in north-western Iberia, and alongside the progressive increase in the use of Romance that will result in the emergence of vernacular languages by the thirteenth century, our proposal intends to address documentary practices and uses in the context of secular rural communities in contrast with those communities culturally located at the centre of change and which are mostly ecclesiastical. With that end in mind, this paper combines three of the perspectives proposed for this congress. We will depart from the analysis of the form and function of secular diplomas made by scribes from rural contexts, before considering the graphic systems and styles used in communities of professional scribes with different levels of literacy. Finally, we will assess the mobility of practices and their authors, taking the parish church and the rural monastery as meeting points. Form and function: We will examine the interaction between the visual and material aspects typical of framed charters, their production and content, in the context of rural secular communities (what distinguishes the secular documentary corpus in terms of its materiality and use?) and in opposition to the charters associated with central ecclesiastical communities. A comparison will be made between the processes of documentary creation in both environments, their raison d’être and usefulness, and the effect on the resulting product as a material object to be read but also seen. The scripts and styles of writing communities: We will study the graphic typologies and documentary practices of professional scribes working for central ecclesiastical institutions (cathedrals and monasteries) in contrast to those in centres of a lower cultural level (rural parishes and minor monasteries), examining their possible interaction with regards to the process of absorption and internalization of new palaeographic and diplomatic developments. In this sense, we propose to delve into the life and development of graphic activity of ecclesiastical and lay agents with limited literacy and to evaluate their role in the configuration of identities. Individual mobility and encounters: The scope of action of the rural scribes will be evaluated alongside their relationship with the secular communities they served. Similarly, we will consider their role as integrating agents as well as their possible itinerancy within (certainly) parochial and, possibly, monastic contexts. As a result of the study of these three perspectives, we will provide a clearer picture of the encounters in the written culture between rural and central scribes and their respective communities, pondering mutual exchanges, reception of new developments and how cultural interaction could affect the evolution of documentary practices in north-western Iberia. This will bring about a better understanding of the practice of writing across all levels of society.

(Language: English) Ainoa Castro Correa, Departamento de Historia Medieval, Moderna y Contemporánea, Universidad de Salamanca Abstract Around the middle of the 12th century the territories south of the river Miño were finally recognised as the independent Kingdom of Portugal. Afonso Henriques’ determination put an end to the illusory political unity of north-western Iberia which had concealed what in practice was a reality: that the natural border kept apart two different, albeit closely related, territories with their own peculiarities. From this starting point, this session aims to explore the concept of the Galician-Portuguese border as a barrier of identities, delving into the writing practices developed in rural contexts north and south of the river, before and after Portuguese independence.

slides, and draft transcript of the presentation given at theXIX Jornadas de la Sociedad Española de Ciencias y Técnicas Historiográficas, "Forma, uso y función de lo escrito. De la Antigüedad al siglo XII", Facultad de Geografía e Historia, Universidad de Sevilla (20-21 June). Abstract En el marco del proyecto europeo de investigación “The Secret Life of Writing: People, Script and Ideas in the Iberian Peninsula (c. 900-1200)” (ERC StG Research Project 2020-2025), emplazado en la Universidad de Salamanca, nuestra propuesta para estas Jornadas se centra en presentar los resultados iniciales del estudio interdisciplinar que estamos llevando a cabo de las fuentes manuscritas conservadas para el noroeste peninsular hispano de entre los siglos X y XII.

and presentation given at the XVIII Jornadas de la Sociedad Española de Ciencias y Técnicas Historiográficas.

As a brief overview of the palaeographical method designed to graphically contextualise these sources, this work is intended to be a quick guide for Manuscript Studies scholars who are not specialists on the topic but nevertheless work with Visigothic script material in their research, as well as for readers interested in knowing more about medieval written sources. The pages that follow are also intended to stimulate debate on Visigothic script, the study of its variants, evolution and contextualisation, likewise introducing a new software build to help with the detailed analysis of the extant manuscript material. This article is concerned with the scribes who, in the early decades of the 9th century in the east of the Iberian Peninsula and of the 12th century in the north and north-west, came under a greater or lesser degree of diplomatic pressure to change their graphic model from Visigothic script to Caroline minuscule. We will briefly discuss when and why each production centre, whether of longstanding or of new creation, adopted the new writing system that had come to dominate in Europe and how that change was implemented and perceived by their contemporaries. Special attention will be paid to scribes and copyists who reveal themselves to have been at the interface between the two cultural contexts by considering those very few extant examples of polygraphism in Latin writing in Iberia.

Author Original Manuscript (pre-print) Published as “Pedro Kendúlfiz (†1051), Notary of the Royal Chancery of León: Training, Career, and Relationships”, in Le scribe d’archives dans l’Occident médiéval: formations, carriers, réseaux, edited by X. Hermand, J.-F. Nieus and É. Renard, Turnhout: Brepols (Utrecht Studies in Medieval Literacy, 43), 2019, pp. 103-131. ISBN: 978-2-503-58433-1. Abstract As medievalists dealing with manuscript sources, two of the questions we try to answer most often are who were the material authors of the written testimonies we are using for our research and what was their cultural context. In order to solve these queries we tend to rely directly on each scribe’s texts to reconstruct their career and environment, but working with charters, and scribes for whom we have very few manuscript examples, the textual information that can be obtained is not always enough to go further. In those cases where we only have a name, with or without patronymic, or even when the scribe did not sign the charter, we must depend only on the analysis of his writing since, through the graphic characteristics shown by the script, it is possible to ascribe him to a specific school, and chronological and geographical context. Performing this detective approach is not easy. In this article, the methodology to be applied to unveil information about medieval scribes will be tested, reviewing the current scholarship in order to shed light on the professional career of one of the first notaries of the incipient royal chancellery of the Kingdom of Leon in the early eleventh century.

- Abstract
Ainoa Castro Correa doctoral thesis, recently read at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, has isolated and made relevant the regional characteristics of the Visigothic script used in the Kingdom of Galicia between the 10th and 12th centuries. Castro has used the diocese of Lugo as a representative sample. This identification, which has already been done in other Iberian regions such as Catalonia, Portugal or the mozarabic Spain, will allow the regional assignment of manuscripts without precise geographic location. This will bring also a better understanding of production centers and authors of all these documents, which in turn, will serve for a better understand of the social, historical and cultural context in which were written.

We know as Visigothic script the Latin script used between around the 8th and 13th centuries in the territories that formed the ancient Visigothic kingdom. Since the end of last century, once established its basic graphical characteristics (variants, morphology, abbreviations, evolution, etc.) and discussed about its possible origin (genetic, chronological and geographical), the published studies about this kind of writing have focused on further analysis of the regional characteristics. The study of this aspect is very important to allow the geographic location of all those sources which, analyzed in isolation, we can not ascribe with certainty to a specific production center, such as codices without colophon or fragments. We can compare their graphic features with those of the scriptures that we can date and locate geographically, such as diplomas, to build a complete context allowing us to continue with the study of this writing, its evolution and all the cultural aspects related to these sources. The first two differentiated areas were the Mozarabic and the Leonese in the late 19th century, and soon after the Portuguese and the Catalan and southern France ones. But we still have work to do. Despite the large volume of documentation preserved in Visigothic script of the ancient Kingdom of Galicia, the detailed examination of these sources had not yet been done. Consequently, has been kept the idea that this type of writing does not have specific features in this area enough to deserve a specific study and separate this as independent of the Leonese, in which traditionally has been included. Thus, the main goal of my doctoral thesis was the beginning of the task ahead, the study of manuscript sources preserved in Visigothic script for Galicia, through the representative sample of the diocese of Lugo: (i) make a corpus of manuscript sources preserved in this kind of writing from this specific area, (ii) to identify the major production centers (cathedral and monastic training schools), (iii) distinguish the material authors of these sources and relate them to each center-school, (iv) specify a timeline for use of the Visigothic script in their main variants by center, (v) determine the percentage of use of each variant within this period, (vi) identify the characteristics which seems like specifics to this area, (vii) study the evolution of each variant and (viii) to compare the results, timing and graphics features, with the peculiarities of this kind of writing in other centers.

The work presented here aims to share the methods and possibilities for studying manuscript sources that are preserved in a fragmentary state by using a concrete example: an early medieval charter of Galician origin which has survived to the present day in a very deteriorated condition. Despite the difficulties its analysis entails, one cannot dismiss this type of evidence because one never knows what information fragmentary documents might be able to offer us in relation to both their author and documentary content. Thus, in the following pages, it is shown how we can establish the charter's approximate chronology, its origin and message by examining its script and diplomatic structure, and by studying the text that still survives in the fragment. - Abstract
The past few decades have witnessed great change in the study of the early Middle Ages in the Northern Iberian Peninsula. Spanish and Portuguese historiographies have moved away from older grand narratives such as ‘Reconquest and Repopulation’, which traced a centuries-long process encompassing the ultimate victory of Christianity over Islam and the construction of distinct nations or national societies. The basic tenets of these and other essentialist approaches to a period traditionally seen as the cradle of Spain and Portugal have been questioned and now superseded by a clearer awareness of the territorial diversity characterising the 8th to 11th centuries. Yet the ballast of both nationalism and regionalism has obstructed meaningful comparison amongst the Iberian regions to date. Drawing on the work of the research group EarlyMedIberia, this article argues for a new trans-regional approach to Northern Iberia, looking beyond political and geographical boundaries to consider the whole in a comparative light, and stressing the commonalities between regional and local societies. It does so by providing an overview of the extant charter material from before 1100 (indicating the principal editions) and by reviewing the major historiography. The conclusion proposes a closer assessment of the differences and similarities amongst regional historiographies, based on a more nuanced understanding of how they have been moulded by the specificities of the charter corpus in each region, as the first step towards a more integrated, contextualised, and rigorously comparative approach to the early Middle Ages in Northern Iberia.
