Oocyte retrieval forms a crucial part of in vitro fertilisation treatment and its ultimate outcome. Standard double-lumen needles, which include a sequence of aspiration and flushing steps, are characterised by a similar success rate to single-lumen needles, despite their increased cost. A novel hydrodynamics-based needle called the OxIVF needle is proposed here, which is geared towards the generation of an internal flow field within the full follicular volume via laterally, rather than frontally, oriented flushing, leading to successful retrievals with no additional stress on the oocyte. A two-dimensional digital twin of the follicular environment is created and tested via multi-phase flow direct numerical simulation. Oocyte initial location within the follicle is varied, while quantities of interest such as velocity magnitude and vorticity are measured with a high level of precision. This provides insight into the overall fluid motion, as well as the trajectory and stresses experienced by the oocyte. A comparative benchmark set of tests indicated a higher success rate of the OxIVF needle of up to 100%, marking a significant improvement over the traditional double-lumen design whose success rate of no more than 75% was also highly dependent on the location of the needle tip inside the follicle. All forces measured during these tests showcase how the oocyte experiences stresses which are no larger than at the aspiration point, with the flow field providing a gentle steering effect towards the extraction region. "When the liquid phase of a particle-laden droplet evaporates, a ring of solute is typically formed - what has become known as the "coffee ring effect". A key focus of recent work has been the suppression of the coffee-ring effect to leave behind more spatially-uniform particle coatings instead. Efforts to suppress the coffee ring effect often focus on physical effects such as Marangoni flows. Here we focus on a purely geometric effect - the effect of substrate curvature - by evaporating suspension droplets on spherical surfaces of different radius of curvature. We find that stains formed on more highly curved substrates are more uniform. To understand this, we propose a model of the evaporation-induced flow, combined with a detailed calculation of how curvature modifies the local evaporation rate. Organic photoswitchable molecules have struggled in solid state form to fulfill their remarkable potential, in terms of photoswitching performance and long-term stability when compared to their inorganic counterparts. We report the concept of non-electron deficient host's surface with optimal porosity and hydrophobicity, as a priori strategy to design photoefficient organic solid-state photochromic materials with outstanding mechanical robustness. When exposed to a light stimulus including natural sunlight, the photoswitchable nanocomposite changes color promptly and reversibly, in a matter of seconds along with excellent photo-fatigue resistance, which are on a par with inorganic photochromes. Exemplars of commercially viable prototypes that are optically clear, comprising smart windows, complex photochromic sculptures, and self-erasing rewritable devices, were engineered by direct blending with resilient polymers; particularly, the use of high-stiffness polymer (> 2 GPa) is no longer an insurmountable challenge. Ultra-sensitive and highly selective iodine gas sensors play a crucial role during the nuclear radiation leak for a timely detection and mitigation of pollution, ensuring the safety of a vast number of operators and subsequent integrity of the facility. Herein, we rationally designed a metal-organic framework (MOF) that exhibits an outstanding performance with an almost billion-fold enhancement in the electrical response due to its optimized hydrophobicity, which allows the easy migration of iodine molecules though the channels and the presence of suitable interaction sites, temporarily anchoring the target molecule for ultra-trace sensing. The prototype sensor tested in demanding environments demonstrates its high selectivity, ultra-trace parts per billion (ppb)-level sensitivity, good reversibility, and a very fast response time even at high frequencies compared to existing adsorbents, including commercially available materials. Further, the iodine sensing at the atomic level was studied in detail by measuring the electrical response of a single crystal and, the optimal thickness of the MOF layer was identified for an industrially-viable prototype sensor by using inkjet printing. This article investigates a novel electrophoretic molecular communication mechanism that utilizes a time-varying electric field, which induces time-varying molecule velocities and in turn improves communication performance. For a sinusoidal field, we specify favorable signal parameters (e.g., phase and frequency) that yield excellent communication link performance. We also analytically derive an optimized field function by formulating an appropriate cost function and solving the Euler-Lagrange equation. In our setup, the field strength is proportional to the molecular velocity; we verify this assumption by solving the Basset-Boussinesq-Oseen equation for a given time-varying electric field (forcing function) and examining its implications for practical physical parameterizations of the system. Our analysis and Monte-Carlo simulation results demonstrate that the proposed time-varying approach can significantly increase the number of information-carrying molecules expected to be observed at the receiver and reduce the bit-error probability compared to the constant field benchmark., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

The internal dynamics during the coalescence of a sessile droplet and a subsequently deposited impacting droplet, with either identical or distinct surface tension, is studied experimentally in the regime where surface tension is dominant. Two color high-speed cameras are used to capture the rapid internal flows and associated mixing from both side and bottom views simultaneously by adding an inert dye to the impacting droplet. Given sufficient lateral separation between droplets of identical surface tension, a robust surface jet is identified on top of the coalesced droplet. Image processing shows this jet is the result of a surface flow caused by the impact inertia and an immobile contact line. By introducing surface tension differences between the coalescing droplets, the surface jet can be either enhanced or suppressed via a Marangoni flow. The influence of the initial droplet configuration and relative surface tension on the long-term dynamics and mixing efficiency, plus the implications for emerging applications such as reactive inkjet printing, are also considered., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

The wrinkling of thin elastic objects provides a means of generating regular patterning at small scales in applications ranging from photovoltaics to microfluidic devices. Static wrinkle patterns are known to be governed by an energetic balance between the object's bending stiffness and an effective substrate stiffness, which may originate from a true substrate stiffness or from tension and curvature along the wrinkles. Here we investigate dynamic wrinkling, induced by the impact of a solid sphere onto an ultra-thin polymer sheet floating on water. The vertical deflection of the sheet's centre induced by impact draws material radially inwards, resulting in an azimuthal compression that is relieved by the wrinkling of the entire sheet. We show that this wrinkling is truly dynamic, exhibiting features that are qualitatively different to those seen in quasi-static wrinkling experiments. Moreover, we show that the wrinkles coarsen dynamically because of the inhibiting effect of the fluid inertia. This dynamic coarsening can be understood heuristically as the result of a dynamic stiffness, which dominates the static stiffnesses reported thus far, and allows new controls of wrinkle wavelength., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Droplets splash when they impact dry, flat substrates above a critical velocity that depends on parameters such as droplet size, viscosity and air pressure. By imaging ethanol drops impacting silicone gels of different stiffnesses we show that substrate stiffness also affects the splashing threshold. Splashing is reduced or even eliminated: droplets on the softest substrates need over 70\% more kinetic energy to splash than they do on rigid substrates. We show that this is due to energy losses caused by deformations of soft substrates during the first few microseconds of impact. We find that solids with Young's moduli $\lesssim 100$kPa reduce splashing, in agreement with simple scaling arguments. Thus materials like soft gels and elastomers can be used as simple coatings for effective splash prevention. Soft substrates also serve as a useful system for testing splash-formation theories and sheet-ejection mechanisms, as they allow the characteristics of ejection sheets to be controlled independently of the bulk impact dynamics of droplets., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures
