Abstract

In Green Software Development, quantifying the energy footprint of a software system is one of the most basic activities. This documents provides a high-level overview of how the energy footprint of a software system can be estimated to support Green Software Development. We introduce basic concepts in the area, highlight methodological issues that must be accounted for when conducting experiments, discuss trade-offs associated with different estimation approaches, and make some practical considerations. This document aims to be a starting point for researchers who want to begin conducting work in this area.

2. Green AI: A Preliminary Empirical Study on Energy Consumption in DL Models Across Different Runtime Infrastructures

Abstract

Deep Learning (DL) frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow include runtime infrastructures responsible for executing trained models on target hardware, managing memory, data transfers, and multi-accelerator execution, if applicable. Additionally, it is a common practice to deploy pre-trained models on environments distinct from their native development settings. This led to the introduction of interchange formats such as ONNX, which includes its runtime infrastructure, and ONNX Runtime, which work as standard formats that can be used across diverse DL frameworks and languages. Even though these runtime infrastructures have a great impact on inference performance, no previous paper has investigated their energy efficiency. In this study, we monitor the energy consumption and inference time in the runtime infrastructures of three well-known DL frameworks as well as ONNX, using three various DL models. To have nuance in our investigation, we also examine the impact of using different execution providers. We find out that the performance and energy efficiency of DL are difficult to predict. One framework, MXNet, outperforms both PyTorch and TensorFlow for the computer vision models using batch size 1, due to efficient GPU usage and thus low CPU usage. However, batch size 64 makes PyTorch and MXNet practically indistinguishable, while TensorFlow is outperformed consistently. For BERT, PyTorch exhibits the best performance. Converting the models to ONNX yields significant performance improvements in the majority of cases. Finally, in our preliminary investigation of execution providers, we observe that TensorRT always outperforms CUDA.

17. Linear optical logical Bell state measurements with optimal loss-tolerance threshold

Abstract

Quantum threshold theorems impose hard limits on the hardware capabilities to process quantum information. We derive tight and fundamental upper bounds to loss-tolerance thresholds in different linear-optical quantum information processing settings through an adversarial framework, taking into account the intrinsically probabilistic nature of linear optical Bell measurements. For logical Bell state measurements - ubiquitous operations in photonic quantum information - we demonstrate analytically that linear optics can achieve the fundamental loss threshold imposed by the no-cloning theorem even though, following the work of Lee et al., (Phys. Rev. A 100, 052303 (2019)), the constraint was widely assumed to be stricter. We spotlight the assumptions of the latter publication and find their bound holds for a logical Bell measurement built from adaptive physical linear-optical Bell measurements. 18. Advocating for Experiential Learning Programs as Change Agents in Higher Education: Imagining a Justice Orientation That Centers Students and Partners While Enriching Practice

Abstract

The National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) Fellows are academic professionals who engage in a community of practice and explore their practitioner-scholar identity through research and scholarly inquiry into experiential education. During some monthly meetings, the discussion focused on how to infuse equity, diversity, and inclusion in internship programs. The fellows ruminated on strategies to create quality internship programs and how to embed experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum so more students could access them. Collectively, these comments highlight what is not always stated but ever-present; that is, the fellows' justice orientation. The monthly meeting of NSEE Fellows consistently explored practices with experiential education programs, from internships and working with employers to teaching internship courses. During each meeting, the NSEE Fellows interrogated their practice, raised questions about experiential education programs, and inquired into the most promising approaches that fostered student success in the context of their higher education institutions. The core question that emerged during these meetings became: "What are you advocating for in your experiential education program to foster student success?"

19. Experiential Learning Educators as Tempered Radicals and Social Change Agents in Higher Education: The NSEE Fellows Program as Reflective Practitioner-Scholars

Abstract

Experiential learning educators have long fought to justify this form of active learning in their curriculum (Hesser, 2013), and the past several decades have seen a resurgence of, and renewed interest in, experiential learning through forms of hands-on learning, such as: service-learning/community-based learning, educational internships, global study abroad experiences, and undergraduate research opportunities (Kuh, 2008). Responding to this call for new pedagogical approaches is the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE), with its clear mission "to cultivate educators who effectively use experiential education as an integral part of personal, professional, civic and global learning." As a professional organization dedicated to experiential educators through education, scholarship, and networking, NSEE launched the NSEE Fellows program in fall 2020, which features a vigorous and competitive application process facilitated by the NSEE Research and Scholarship Committee. The call for applications was initially geared towards educators facilitating internship programs and intentionally seeking to engage with the National College Internship Survey facilitated by the Center for Research on College-Workforce Transitions (CCWT). This article will demonstrate the practitioner-scholar framework from which the fellows operated, provide examples of their scholarly reflections, and explore how the fellows engage in practice and theory through their professional roles. In doing so, the article illustrates a reflective practitioner-scholar model (Schön, 1983; Lytle, 2008; Ravitch, 2014) and its relevance for experiential educators from diverse backgrounds.

Abstract

Abstract Background Childhood cancers affect about 350 children every year in Sweden and are life-threatening diseases. During the treatment period, situations arise that can become morally challenging for the child. When knowing children’s values and morally challenging situations in childhood cancer care, targeted ethics support could be developed and used in care. Aim To explore children’s values and moral dilemmas ​​when undergoing cancer treatment. Methods This is a qualitative study based on empirical data. The data collection was conducted through three focus group interviews and six individual interviews with children between 10 and 18 years (n = 16). A content analysis methodology was used to generate themes. Children who were/have been treated for cancer at three childhood cancer centres in Sweden were invited to participate. The study was approved by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority. The children’s participation was based on voluntariness and consent/assent. Findings During the analysis, five themes of values emerged: Personal relationships, Bodily ease and identity, Feeling in control and being involved, Positive distractions and Right care that is needed. Their moral dilemmas were thematized into: Should I consider others or not? Should I rest or not? and Should I refuse treatment or not? Conclusion Children undergoing cancer treatment want to have personal relationships with healthcare professionals. Their moral dilemmas were about questioning their own physical and psychological well-being against their expectations, the values of others and the treatment required. Further research is needed to understand how to deal with moral dilemmas in children undergoing cancer treatment.

Abstract

Abstract Background To strengthen palliative care for children in the Nordic countries, an updated status of current needs, resources, clinical services, education, and research is necessary to align and consolidate future research. A Nordic research collaboration initiative for children with palliative care needs was assembled in 2023. Building on this initiative, this paper presents an overview of pediatric palliative care (PPC) in the Nordic countries’ (a) population characteristics, (b) care models and setting of care, (c) education and training, and (d) research. Methods The Nordic initiative researchers collaboratively gathered and assessed available data on the characteristics of PPC within Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, the Faroe Islands, Sweden, and Åland. Data were compiled in a matrix with population characteristics, models- and setting of care, education and training, and areas of research in a Nordic context. The findings are narratively and descriptively presented, providing an overview of Nordic PPC. Results In total, the Nordic child population comprises around six million children (0–19 years), of which about 41.200 are estimated to be living with a life-limiting and/or life-threatening condition. Healthcare services are provided through various care models, ranging from specialized care to homecare settings. Overall, there remain few opportunities for education and training with some exceptions. Also, Nordic research within PPC has been shown to be a growing field although much remains to be done. Conclusion This overview is the first outline of the current PPC in Nordic countries. Although some differences remain important to acknowledge, overall, the strengths and challenges faced within PPC in the Nordic countries are comparable and call for joint action to increase evidence, services, and education to better serve the children, families, and healthcare personnel within PPC. Despite the varying structural premises for PPC, research endeavors aiming to provide evidence in this field seem increasing, timely and relevant for the Nordic countries, as well as the international context.

Abstract

Abstract Background Pediatric palliative care (PPC) seeks to enhance the quality of life (QoL) for both children and their families. While most studies within PPC have focused on the ill child’s QoL, less is known about parents’ experiences of their own QoL. The aim of this study was to explore parents’ QoL when their child has a life-threatening or life-limiting condition. Methods The study has a qualitative, hermeneutic phenomenological design inspired by van Manen’s phenomenology of practice. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 fathers and 12 mothers of children living with cancer or a genetic condition. A deeper understanding of parents’ lived experiences was obtained through an adapted photo elicitation method. Two rounds of thematic analysis were conducted, covering both the photo elicitation data, and interview data. Results The findings describe four themes related to parents’ QoL: living a normal life, giving my child a good life, having time to fulfill siblings’ needs, and feeling heard and respected in the health and social care system. Conclusions The complexity of elements shaping parents’ QoL is evident. The interconnectedness between parents, the ill child, siblings, and interactions with the health and social care system, highlights the need to understand and address diverse aspects in enhancing parents QoL.

Abstract

Exponential model for population growth (exponential model) is a foundation to evaluate population dynamics in Population Ecology field. Here, we used a didactic experiment to teach exponential model for an undergraduate course of Population Ecology. We built nine populations of weevils with three different initial population sizes: eight, 16, and 32 individuals with three replicates each. We provided equal food resource availability, and counted their population sizes weekly for 12 weeks. We estimated the intrinsic growth rate (i.e., r parameter), by trials and errors with an exponential model build in an Excel spreadsheet. The population growth rate (i.e., dN/dt parameter) was estimated using r values. Replicates with eight and 16 individuals reached the highest values of r and dN/dt, while replicates with 32 individuals reached the lowest values. Beyond of exponential model, two density dependency issues acting in populations were observed. First, in the lowest initial population sizes we observed the effect of demographic stochasticity acting in both r and dN/dt in one of the three populations. Second, we observed the intraspecific competition reducing r values in largest initial populations. Therefore, we highlight the importance of didactic experiment into learning exponential model in Population Ecology course, both for teaching and learning practices.

30. Correlates of verbal and physical violence experienced and perpetrated among cisgender college women: serial cross-sections during one year of the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

IntroductionViolence against women is a prevalent, preventable public health crisis. COVID-19 stressors and pandemic countermeasures may have exacerbated violence against women. Cisgender college women are particularly vulnerable to violence. Thus, we examined the prevalence and correlates of verbal/physical violence experienced and perpetrated among cisgender women enrolled at a New York City college over one year during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsFrom a prospective cohort study, we analyzed data self-reported quarterly (T1, T2, T3, T4) between December 2020 and December 2021. Using generalized estimated equations (GEE) and logistic regression, we identified correlates of experienced and perpetrated violence among respondents who were partnered or cohabitating longitudinally and at each quarter, respectively. Multivariable models included all variables with unadjusted parameters X2p-value ≤0.05.ResultsThe prevalence of experienced violence was 52% (T1: N = 513), 30% (T2: N = 305), 33% (T3: N = 238), and 17% (T4: N = 180); prevalence of perpetrated violence was 38%, 17%, 21%, and 9%. Baseline correlates of experienced violence averaged over time (GEE) included race, living situation, loneliness, and condom use; correlates of perpetrated violence were school year, living situation, and perceived social support. Quarter-specific associations corroborated population averages: living with family members and low social support were associated with experienced violence at all timepoints except T4. Low social support was associated with higher odds of perpetrated violence at T1/T3. Other/Multiracial identity was associated with higher odds of violence experience at T3.ConclusionsLiving situation was associated with experienced and perpetrated violence in all analyses, necessitating further exploration of household conditions, family dynamics, and interpersonal factors. The protective association of social support with experienced and perpetrated violence also warrants investigation into forms of social engagement and cohesion. Racial differences in violence also require examination. Our findings can inform university policy development on violence and future violence research. Within or beyond epidemic conditions, universities should assess and strengthen violence prevention and support systems for young women by developing programming to promote social cohesion.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction Approval of the first long‐acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (LAI ART) medication heralded a new era of HIV treatment. However, the years since approval have been marked by implementation challenges. The “Accelerating Implementation of Multilevel Strategies to Advance Long‐Acting Injectable for Underserved Populations (ALAI UP Project)” aims to accelerate the systematic and equitable delivery of LAI ART. Methods We coded and analysed implementation barriers according to the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) domains, desired resources and programme goals from questionnaire short‐answer responses by clinics across the United States responding to ALAI UP's solicitation to participate in the project between November 2022 and January 2023. Results Thirty‐eight clinics responded to ALAI UP's solicitation. The characteristics of LAI ART as an innovation (cost, complexity of procurement, dosing interval, limited eligibility) precipitated and interacted with barriers in other CFIR domains. Barriers included obtaining coverage for the cost of medication (27/38 clinics) (outer setting); need for new workflows and staffing (12/38) and/or systems to support injection scheduling/coordination (16/38), transportation and expanded clinic hours (13/38) (inner setting); and patient (10/38) and provider (7/38) education (individuals). To support implementation, applicants sought: technical assistance to develop protocols and workflows (18/38), specifically strategies to address payor challenges (8/38); additional staff for care coordination and benefits navigation (17/38); opportunities to share experiences with other implementing clinics (12/38); patient‐facing materials to educate and increase demand (7/38); and support engaging communities (6/38). Clinics’ LAI ART programme goals varied. Most prioritized delivering LAI ART to their most marginalized patients struggling to achieve viral suppression on oral therapy, despite awareness that current US Food and Drug Administration approval is only for virally suppressed patients. The goal for LAI ART reach after 1 year of implementation ranged from ≤10% of patients with HIV on LAI ART (17/38) to ≥50% of patients (2/38). Conclusions Diverse clinic types are interested in offering LAI ART and most aspire to use LAI ART to support their most vulnerable patients sustain viral suppression. Dedicated resources centred on equity and relevant to context and population are needed to support implementation. Otherwise, the introduction of LAI ART risks exacerbating, not ameliorating, health disparities.

32. Evaluation of the Tasso+ blood self-collection device for quantitation of plasma cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia in adult solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr)

Abstract

ABSTRACT Quantitative monitoring of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia in venous blood is standard in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr) but is limited by the need for phlebotomy facilities and personnel. The aim of the study was to evaluate the Tasso+ capillary blood (CB) self-collection device for quantitation of plasma CMV DNAemia. Thirty adult SOTr with suspected CMV DNAemia were enrolled to have a supervised Tasso+ CB sample collection within 24 h of a venous sample. CMV DNA was quantitated in paired samples by using the Abbott M2000 Real-Time qPCR instrument. The participants were provided with a study-specific survey that measured patient acceptability of the Tasso+ device compared with venipuncture. A Tasso + CB sample was successfully collected in 28/30 (93%) patients, and 44 paired samples were analyzed. Concordance for detection of CMV DNAemia above the limit of detection (LOD) was 91% (42/44), and the Tasso + CB sample was estimated to be 95% sensitive at a viral load (VL) of 308 IU/mL. Among samples with a quantifiable DNAemia result with both methods (N = 31), there was excellent correlation between methods (Spearman R2 = 0.99). The difference in CMV VL between venous and Tasso+ CB samples was not dependent on time (P > 0.1). Of 12 who completed the survey, 11 (92%) expressed a preference for Tasso+ CB collection over venipuncture. Collection of CB with the Tasso+ device is feasible, patient-acceptable, and yields generally comparable CMV DNAemia load to standard venous samples, but with lower sensitivity. Future studies to optimize and evaluate this methodology for patient self-collected samples are warranted.IMPORTANCEWe evaluate an FDA-cleared blood self-collection device (Tasso+) and demonstrate that it is patient-acceptable and yields a liquid blood sample with quantitative CMV DNAemia results comparable to those of standard venipuncture samples. This opens up possibilities for self-blood collection to monitor for CMV and potentially other viruses in transplant and other at-risk populations.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Post-market surveillance of test performance is a critical function of public health agencies and clinical researchers that ensures tests maintaining diagnostic characteristics following their regulatory approval. Changes in product quality, manufacturing processes over time, or the evolution of new variants may impact product performance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a plethora of point-of-care tests (POCTs) was released onto the Canadian market. This study evaluated the performance characteristics of several of the most widely distributed POCTs in Canada, including four rapid antigen tests (Abbott Panbio, BTNX Rapid Response, SD Biosensor, and Quidel QuickVue) and two molecular tests (Abbott ID NOW and Lucira Check IT). All tests were challenged with 149 SARS-CoV-2 clinical positives, including multiple variants up to and including Omicron XBB.1.5, as well as 29 clinical negatives. Results were stratified based on whether the isolate was Omicron or pre-Omicron as well as by reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR Ct value. The test performance of each POCT was consistent with the manufacturers' claims and showed no significant decline in clinical performance against any of the variants tested. These findings provide continued confidence in the results of these POCTs as they continue to be used to support decentralized COVID-19 testing. This work demonstrates the essential role of post-market surveillance in ensuring reliability in diagnostic tools.IMPORTANCEPost-market surveillance of diagnostic test performance is critical to ensure their reliability after regulatory approval. This is especially critical in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic as the use of point-of-care tests (POCTs) became widespread. Our study focused on four rapid antigen tests (Abbott Panbio, BTNX Rapid Response, SD Biosensor, and Quidel QuickVue) and two molecular tests (Abbott ID NOW and Lucira Check IT) that were widely distributed across Canada, assessing their performance using many SARS-CoV-2 variants, including up to Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5. Overall, we found no significant difference in performance against any variant, reinforcing confidence in their use. As concerns in test efficacy have been raised by news outlets, particularly regarding the BTNX Rapid Response, this work is even more timely and crucial. Our research offers insights into the performance of widely used COVID-19 POCTs but also highlights the necessity for post-market surveillance.

Abstract

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Abstract

Context: Software programs can be written in different but functionally equivalent ways. Even though previous research has compared specific formatting elements to find out which alternatives affect code legibility, seeing the bigger picture of what makes code more or less legible is challenging. Goal: We aim to find which formatting elements have been investigated in empirical studies and which alternatives were found to be more legible for human subjects. Method: We conducted a systematic literature review and identified 15 papers containing human-centric studies that directly compared alternative formatting elements. We analyzed and organized these formatting elements using a card-sorting method. Results: We identified 13 formatting elements (e.g., indentation) and 33 levels of formatting elements (e.g., two-space indentation), which are about formatting styles, spacing, block delimiters, long or complex code lines, and word boundary styles. While some levels were found to be statistically better than other equivalent ones in terms of code legibility, e.g., appropriate use of indentation with blocks, others were not, e.g., formatting layout. For identifier style, we found divergent results, where one study found a significant difference in favor of camel case, while another study found a positive result in favor of snake case. Conclusion: The number of identified papers, some of which are outdated, and the many null and contradictory results emphasize the relative lack of work in this area and underline the importance of more research. Abstract

Abstract Environmental niche modeling (ENM) has emerged as a promising tool for identifying grass species with potential for rangeland restoration. This approach can detect suitable areas and environments where these species can be planted. In this study, we employed ENM to estimate the potential distribution range of 50 grass species of the grasslands and shrublands of northern Mexico. The outcome of the ENM served to identify grass species with potential for restoration in Mexico, especially those not commonly used for that purpose in the past. Results suggested the possibility of selecting seven grass species with the potential for revegetating degraded grasslands, nine for shrublands, and six for alkaline soils. This research provides insights into the environmental adaptations of different grass species distributed in the rangelands of northern Mexico. Ecologists, conservation planners, researchers, and range managers could use these outcomes and the maps of the potential distribution ranges as supportive information to conduct effective restoration efforts. In turn, this can assist in increasing the probability of success of future rangelands restoration programs, which are often costly in terms of financial investments and labor.

Abstract

Abstract Coronary artery disease (CAD) often leads to adverse events resulting in significant disease burdens. Underlying risk factors often remain inapparent prior to disease incidence and the cardiovascular (CV) risk is not exclusively explained by traditional risk factors. Platelets inherently promote atheroprogression and enhanced platelet functions and distinct platelet lipid species are associated with disease severity in patients with CAD. Lipidomics data were acquired using mass spectrometry and processed alongside clinical data applying machine learning to model estimates of an increased CV risk in a consecutive CAD cohort (n = 595). By training machine learning models on CV risk measurements, stratification of CAD patients resulted in a phenotyping of risk groups. We found that distinct platelet lipids are associated with an increased CV or bleeding risk and independently predict adverse events. Notably, the addition of platelet lipids to conventional risk factors resulted in an increased diagnostic accuracy of patients with adverse CV events. Thus, patients with aberrant platelet lipid signatures and platelet functions are at elevated risk to develop adverse CV events. Machine learning combining platelet lipidome data and common clinical parameters demonstrated an increased diagnostic value in patients with CAD and might improve early risk discrimination and classification for CV events.

Abstract

Abstract Background The management of febrile infants aged ≤ 60 days and adherence to guidelines vary greatly. Our objective was to describe the process of decision-making when managing febrile infants aged ≤ 60 days and to describe the factors that influenced this decision. Methods We conducted 6 focus group discussions with 19 clinically active physicians in the pediatric emergency departments of 2 university hospitals in Skåne region, Sweden. We followed an inductive qualitative design, using a phenomenological approach. A second-order perspective was used, focusing on how physicians perceived the phenomenon (managing fever in infants) rather than the phenomenon itself. The transcribed interviews were analyzed using a 7-step approach. Results Performing a lumbar puncture (LP) was conceived as a complex, emotionally and mentally laden procedure and dominated the group discussions. Three central categories emerged as factors that influenced the decision-making process on whether to perform an LP: 1) a possible focus of infection that could explain the origin of the fever, 2) questioning whether the temperature at home reported by the parents was a fever, especially if it was ≤ 38.2°C, and 3) the infant’s general condition and questioning the need for LP in case of well-appearing infants. Around these 3 central categories evolved 6 secondary categories that influenced the decision-making process of whether to perform an LP or not: 1) the physicians’ desire to be able to trust their judgement, 2) fearing the risk of failure, 3) avoiding burdensome work, 4) taking others into account, 5) balancing guidelines and resources, and 6) seeing a need to practice and learn to perform LP. Conclusions The difficulty and emotional load of performing an LP were important factors that influenced the decision-making process regarding whether to perform an LP. Physicians highlighted the importance of being able to rely on their clinical judgment and make independent decisions. Guidelines may consider allowing a degree of flexibility and independent thinking to take into account patients’ characteristics and needs.

42. On the Bug-proneness of Structures Inspired by Functional Programming in JavaScript Projects

Abstract

Language constructs inspired by functional programming have made their way into most mainstream programming languages. Many researchers and developers consider that these constructs lead to programs that are more concise, reusable, and easier to understand. However, few studies investigate the implications of using them in mainstream programming languages. This paper quantifies the prevalence of four concepts typically associated with functional programming in JavaScript: recursion, immutability, lazy evaluation, and functions as values. We focus on JavaScript programs due to the availability of some of these concepts in the language since its inception, its inspiration from functional programming languages, and its popularity. We mine 91 GitHub repositories (22+ million LOC) written mostly in JavaScript (over 50% of the code), measuring the usage of these concepts from both static and temporal perspectives. We also measure the likelihood of bug-fixing commits removing uses of these concepts (which would hint at bug-proneness) and their association with the presence of code comments (which would hint at code that is hard to understand). We find that these concepts are in widespread use (1 for every 46.65 LOC, 43.59% of LOC). In addition, the usage of higher-order functions, immutability, and lazy evaluation-related structures has been growing throughout the years for the analyzed projects, while the usage of recursion and callbacks & promises has decreased. We also find statistical evidence that removing these structures, with the exception of the ones associated to immutability, is less common in bug-fixing commits than in other commits. In addition, their presence is not correlated with comment size. Our findings suggest that functional programming concepts are important for developers using a multi-paradigm language, and their usage does not make programs harder to understand.

Abstract

Background There is a lack of knowledge regarding siblings’ experiences of being a brother or sister of a child with a life-threatening or life-limiting condition. Siblings’ perspectives are often expressed through their parents and not by siblings themselves. Method This study has a qualitative design within hermeneutic phenomenology. Thirteen siblings (ages 3–29) of children with cancer or genetic conditions participated in semi-structured interviews. Analyses followed a thematic analysis guided by van Manen’s lifeexistentials. Results One overall theme, “What about me?”, illustrates that siblings of children with LT/LL conditions are dealing with their own challenges and needs in the situation while also struggling to receive attention from their parents. The overall theme derives from three subthemes: living with heavy strains, feeling disregarded, and having needs of one’s own. Conclusion The study revealed that siblings’ own needs compete with the needs of the ill child, resulting in the risk of siblings taking a step back rather than expressing what they might actually need themselves. These findings can inform healthcare professionals on the importance of educating and supporting parents and the surrounding community close to the sibling, for example, by helping schoolteachers understand how to meet siblings’ needs.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

46. Enhancing dietary adherence among African-American adolescents: the role of parenting styles and food-related practices

Abstract

IntroductionParenting styles (PSs) and food-related parenting practices (FPPs) play a crucial role in shaping adolescent eating behavior. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the different PSs and FPPs of African-American families and the frequency of consumption of MyPlate food items by adolescents based on recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA).MethodsThis study used a cross-sectional design. Data collection was conducted using Qualtrics through an online survey of 211 African-American parents and their adolescents aged 10–17-year-old. Adolescents completed the Youth and Adolescent Food Frequency Questionnaire to assess their dietary behavior, while parents filled out the survey to identify the degree of PSs (i.e., authoritative, authoritarian, setting rules, and neglecting) and FPPs (i.e., monitoring, reasoning, copying, and modeling). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, and stepwise logistic regression were performed to determine the answers to the research questions.ResultsFor fruit consumption, authoritative parenting significantly reduced the likelihood of adherence to DGA, while authoritarian, monitoring, and reasoning practices increased it. Female adolescents were more likely to meet fruit intake recommendations, with a similar positive impact observed for those whose parents had above high school education. In vegetable intake, authoritarian and monitoring practices positively impact on adherence to DGA, whereas setting rules had a detrimental impact. Being in a married household also increased vegetable intake DGA adherence. For grain consumption, reasoning was a significant positive predictor, while setting rules negatively impacted adherence. Dairy DGA adherence was positively impacted by monitoring and copying practices, but negatively impacted by female gender. Protein intake showed a positive association with reasoning and parental education.DiscussionOur findings confirm the importance of parenting in developing desired eating behaviors among African-American adolescents. The results of this study can be used to develop culture-based nutritional education programs for parents and youth.

47. Lessons learnt from daily oral PrEP delivery to inform national planning for PrEP ring introduction for women in low-income and middle-income countries: a qualitative inquiry of international stakeholders

Abstract

Introduction Some African countries plan to introduce and scale-up new long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis methods (LA-PrEP), like the monthly dapivirine vaginal ring (PrEP ring) and injectable cabotegravir. National costed implementation plans, roadmaps for successful product implementation, are often overlooked. International stakeholders engaged in oral PrEP planning, introduction and scale-up are an information resource of lessons learned to advise LA-PrEP planning. We consulted such international stakeholders and synthesised oral PrEP lessons to inform the development of a costed rollout plan template for LA-PrEP.Methods From selected global health organisations (five international nongovernmental, four donor, four university/research and two multilateral), we interviewed 27 representatives based in America, Europe, Asia and Africa about strategic content and approaches for LA-PrEP policy, programming and implementation. We conducted a thematic analysis of the interview data for implementation considerations.Results From the consultations, we identified six implementation themes for LA-PrEP introduction and scale-up: (1) ethically increasing choice and avoiding coercion; (2) de-stigmatising PrEP by focusing on preference rather than risk-based eligibility; (3) integrating LA-PrEP into services that are more woman-oriented, couple-oriented and family-oriented, and providing private spaces for LA-PrEP delivery; (4) de-medicalising delivery of relatively safe products (eg, PrEP ring); (5) constructing multilevel, nuanced communication strategies to address measured and perceived product efficacy and effectiveness; and (6) devising product-agnostic, modular approaches to service delivery. Despite the widespread emphasis on integration, few stakeholders offered empirical examples of successful integration approaches and frameworks.Conclusions Lessons learnt from stakeholder participants suggest standardised and modular processes can improve efficiencies in LA-PrEP planning and implementation. Tiered communication strategies addressing product efficacy and effectiveness will improve clients’ and providers’ efficacy in making informed decisions. Integration is important for LA-PrEP delivery, but data on empirical integration approaches and frameworks is minimal: further research in this discipline is needed.

Abstract

IntroductionEarly recognition of pain in children is crucial, and their self-report is the primary source of information. However, communication about pain in healthcare settings can be challenging. For non-verbal communication regarding different symptoms, children prefer digital tools. The electronic Faces Thermometer Scale (eFTS) utilizes a universal design with colors, face emojis, and numbers on an 11-point scale (0–10) for pain assessment. The aim of this study was to establish content validity of the eFTS for pain assessments in children.MethodsA mixed methods design was used. The study took place at a university hospital in eastern Sweden, involving 102 children aged 8–17 years who visited outpatient clinics. Participants were presented with 17 pictures representing varying pain levels and asked to assess hypothetical pain using the eFTS. A think-aloud approach was employed, prompting children to verbalize their thoughts about assessments and the eFTS. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics, together with a qualitative approach for analysis of think-aloud conversations.ResultsA total of 1,734 assessments of hypothetical pain using the eFTS were conducted. The eFTS differentiated between no pain (level 0–1) and pain (level 2–10). However, no clear agreement was found in the differentiation between hypothetical pain intensity levels (level 2–10). The analysis revealed that children utilized the entire scale, ranging from no pain to high pain, incorporating numbers, colors, and face emojis in their assessments.DiscussionThe variability in assessments was influenced by prior experiences, which had an impact on the statistical outcome in our study. However, employing the think-aloud method enhances our understanding of how children utilize the scale and perceive its design, including the incorporation of emotion-laden anchors. Children express a preference for using the eFTS to assess their pain during hospital visits.
