Abstract

This article explores the impact of a surgical approach called the subtemporal preauricular infratemporal (SPI) approach with condylar fossa osteotomy on the oral and general health quality of life (OHQoL and GHQoL) of patients undergoing skull-base tumor resection. The study compares patients who underwent this approach with those who underwent a different approach without condylar osteotomy. The results show that patients who underwent the SPI approach had lower scores for jaw dysfunction and chronic pain compared to the control group. The study suggests that the nature of the tumor may have a larger impact on TMJ dysfunction than the surgical approach used. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

This article discusses the longitudinal health-related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes of patients with skull-base chondrosarcoma (CS) following surgical resection. The study, which is the first of its kind, examines the progress of HRQoL over a two-decade period in CS patients who underwent radical surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. The results show that overall, there was no deterioration in the SF-36 Physical Health Component and Mental Health Component summary scores at postoperative and long-term follow-up compared to baseline preoperative values. However, the study also found that CS patients reported lower SF-36 scores, particularly in the Mental Health Component, compared to age-matched Canadian control patients. These findings provide valuable insights into the long-term outcomes and quality of life of CS patients and highlight the need for further research in this area. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

Tumours of the anterior skull base, although often small and benign, disproportionately worsen patient wellbeing due to effects on vision, hormonal balance, and headache. Using a relatively novel technique where instruments and cameras are passed through the nose, these tumours can be removed safely and effectively with less collateral damage than traditional brain surgery. Using this technique on over 650 patients, the factors that influence outcomes and patient wellbeing were discovered for the first time. This roadmap through anterior skull base surgery provides new clarity for patients and their clinicians and will improve each patient���s journey through skull base surgery.
