1. Paving the Pathway: Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities in Cambodia

Abstract

In 2019, children with disabilities in Cambodia were three times less likely to access educational opportunities than their peers without disabilities. Several barriers impede their ability to access inclusive educational opportunities. These include limited capacity of mainstream schools to enroll children with disabilities, lack of teachers who are trained in pedagogical strategies and approaches to teach children with various types of functional difficulties, and community perceptions towards inclusive education. A holistic approach is required to ensure necessary changes are made at all levels of the education system to ensure that children with disabilities can access inclusive learning in Cambodia. This is the first report under the Learning is For Everyone (LiFE) project and offers key recommendations to address barriers. Leaning is For Everyone (LiFE) research was implemented in Cambodia through a partnership between UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS).

2. PyPSA-Spain: an extension of PyPSA-Eur to model the Spanish energy system

Abstract

This work presents PyPSA-Spain, an open-source model of the Spanish energy system based on the European model PyPSA-Eur. It aims to leverage the benefits of single-country modelling over a multi-country approach. In particular, several databases provided by Spanish institutions are exploited to improve the estimation of solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind generation hourly profiles, as well as the spatio-temporal description of the electricity demand. PyPSA-Spain attains hourly resolution for a entire year and represents the Spanish energy system using a configurable number of nodes, while selecting around 35-50 nodes is identified as a good compromise between spatial resolution and model simplicity. To accommodate cross-border interactions, a nested model approach with PyPSA-Eur was used, wherein time-dependent electricity prices from neighbouring countries were precomputed through the optimisation of the European energy system. As a case study, the optimal electricity mix for 2030 was obtained and compared with the latest update of the Spanish National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) from September 2024., Comment: 45 pages, 35 figures, 4 appendices

3. Prediction of Occluded Pedestrians in Road Scenes using Human-like Reasoning: Insights from the OccluRoads Dataset

Abstract

Pedestrian detection is a critical task in autonomous driving, aimed at enhancing safety and reducing risks on the road. Over recent years, significant advancements have been made in improving detection performance. However, these achievements still fall short of human perception, particularly in cases involving occluded pedestrians, especially entirely invisible ones. In this work, we present the Occlusion-Rich Road Scenes with Pedestrians (OccluRoads) dataset, which features a diverse collection of road scenes with partially and fully occluded pedestrians in both real and virtual environments. All scenes are meticulously labeled and enriched with contextual information that encapsulates human perception in such scenarios. Using this dataset, we developed a pipeline to predict the presence of occluded pedestrians, leveraging Knowledge Graph (KG), Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE), and a Bayesian inference process. Our approach achieves a F1 score of 0.91, representing an improvement of up to 42% compared to traditional machine learning models.

4. TrustOps: Continuously Building Trustworthy Software

Abstract

Software services play a crucial role in daily life, with automated actions determining access to resources and information. Trusting service providers to perform these actions fairly and accurately is essential, yet challenging for users to verify. Even with publicly available codebases, the rapid pace of development and the complexity of modern deployments hinder the understanding and evaluation of service actions, including for experts. Hence, current trust models rely heavily on the assumption that service providers follow best practices and adhere to laws and regulations, which is increasingly impractical and risky, leading to undetected flaws and data leaks. In this paper, we argue that gathering verifiable evidence during software development and operations is needed for creating a new trust model. Therefore, we present TrustOps, an approach for continuously collecting verifiable evidence in all phases of the software life cycle, relying on and combining already existing tools and trust-enhancing technologies to do so. Abstract

Ultra-light axion-like particles (ALPs) can be a viable solution to the dark matter problem. The scalar field associated with ALPs, coupled to the electromagnetic field, acts as an active birefringent medium, altering the polarisation properties of light through which it propagates. In particular, oscillations of the axionic field induce monochromatic variations of the plane of linearly polarised radiation of astrophysical signals. The radio emission of millisecond pulsars provides an excellent tool to search for such manifestations, given their high fractional linear polarisation and negligible fluctuations of their polarisation properties. We have searched for the evidence of ALPs in the polarimetry measurements of pulsars collected and preprocessed for the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) campaign. Focusing on the twelve brightest sources in linear polarisation, we searched for an astrophysical signal from axions using both frequentist and Bayesian statistical frameworks. For the frequentist analysis, which uses Lomb-Scargle periodograms at its core, no statistically significant signal has been found. The model used for the Bayesian analysis has been adjusted to accommodate multiple deterministic systematics that may be present in the data. A statistically significant signal has been found in the dataset of multiple pulsars with common frequency between $10^{-8}$ Hz and $2\times10^{-8}$ Hz, which can most likely be explained by the residual Faraday rotation in the terrestrial ionosphere. Strong bounds on the coupling constant $g_{a\gamma}$, in the same ballpark as other searches, have been obtained in the mass range between $6\times10^{-24}$ eV and $5\times10^{-21}$ eV. 6. Solving one-body ensemble N-representability problems with spin

Abstract

The Pauli exclusion principle is fundamental to understanding electronic quantum systems. It namely constrains the expected occupancies $n_i$ of orbitals $\varphi_i$ according to $0 \leq n_i \leq 2$. In this work, we first refine the underlying one-body $N$-representability problem by taking into account simultaneously spin symmetries and a potential degree of mixedness $\boldsymbol w$ of the $N$-electron quantum state. We then derive a comprehensive solution to this problem by using basic tools from representation theory, convex analysis and discrete geometry. Specifically, we show that the set of admissible orbital one-body reduced density matrices is fully characterized by linear spectral constraints on the natural orbital occupation numbers, defining a convex polytope $\Sigma_{N,S}(\boldsymbol w) \subset [0,2]^d$. These constraints are independent of $M$ and the number $d$ of orbitals, while their dependence on $N, S$ is linear, and we can thus calculate them for arbitrary system sizes and spin quantum numbers. Our results provide a crucial missing cornerstone for ensemble density (matrix) functional theory.

7. The ecological forecast horizon revisited: Potential, actual and relative system predictability

Abstract

Ecological forecasts are model-based statements about currently unknown ecosystem states in time or space. For a model forecast to be useful to inform decision-makers, model validation and verification determine adequateness. The measure of forecast goodness that can be translated into a limit up to which a forecast is acceptable is known as the `forecast horizon'. While verification of meteorological models follows strict criteria with established metrics and forecast horizons, assessments of ecological forecasting models still remain experiment-specific and forecast horizons are rarely reported. As such, users of ecological forecasts remain uninformed of how far into the future statements can be trusted. In this work, we synthesise existing approaches, define empirical forecast horizons in a unified framework for assessing ecological predictability and offer recipes on their computation. We distinguish upper and lower boundary estimates of predictability limits, reflecting the model's potential and actual forecast horizon, and show how a benchmark model can help determine its relative forecast horizon. The approaches are demonstrated with four case studies from population, ecosystem, and earth system research.

8. Bimerons as Edge states in Thin Magnetic Strips

Abstract

Magnetic bimerons are potential information carriers in spintronic devices. Bimerons, topologically equivalent to skyrmions, manifest in chiral magnetic systems with in-plane magnetization due to anisotropies or external magnetic fields. Applications demanding their current-driven motion face significant challenges, notably the bimeron Hall effect, which causes transverse movement and annihilation at nanomagnet borders. This study addresses the problem of stabilizing bimeron propagation under current-driven conditions. We demonstrate that bimerons can propagate through thin ferromagnetic strips without annihilation when the easy-axis anisotropy and the electric current are orthogonal. Our findings indicate that below a threshold value of current, the repulsion between the bimeron and the strip boundary allows for stable soliton propagation, even in bent regions. This phenomenon extends to bimeron chains, which propagate parallel to the current flow. By enabling stable long-distance propagation, our results open new avenues for developing bimeron-based racetrack memory devices, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of future spintronic applications.

Actually, we work in the slightly more general setting of groups of classical kind, which includes quasi-split classical groups and generalized spinor groups. We establish our results whenever a local Ramanujan bound holds; a bound that is known for the split classical groups in characteristic $p$, and we prove it for groups of classical kind under a local-global restriction.

Abstract

Let $F$ be a locally compact non-Archimedean field, and $\bf G$ a connected quasi-split reductive group over $F$. We are interested in complex irreducible smooth generic representations $\pi$ of ${\bf G}(F)$. When $F$ has positive characteristic, we prove important properties which previously were only available for $F$ of characteristic 0. The first one is the tempered $L$-function conjecture of Shahidi, stating that when $\pi$ as above is tempered, then the $L$-functions attached to $\pi$ by the Langlands-Shahidi method have no pole for ${\rm Re}(s)>0$. We also establish the standard module conjecture of Casselman and Shahidi, saying that if $\pi$ is written as the Langlands quotient of a standard module, then it is in fact the full standard module. Finally, for a split classical group $\bf G$ we prove a useful result on the unramified unitary spectrum of ${\bf G}(F)$.

Let $(G,+)$ be an Abelian group. Given $h\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, a non-empty subset $A$ of $G$ is called an $S_h$-set if all the sums of $h$ distinct elements of $A$ are different. We extend the concept of $S_h$-set to a more general context in the context of finite vectorial spaces over finite fields. More precisely, a $\emptyset \neq A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^r$ is called an $S_h$-linear set if all the linear combinations of $h$ elements of $A$ are different. We establish a correspondence between $q$-ary linear codes and $S_h$-linear sets. Abstract

Detecting and characterizing decoherence-inducing noise sources is critical for developing scalable quantum technologies and deploying quantum sensors that operate at molecular scales. Yet, existing methods for such noise spectroscopy face fundamental difficulties, including their reliance on severe approximations and the need for extensively averaged measurements. Here, we propose an alternative approach that processes the commonly performed dynamical decoupling-based coherence measurements using a novel self-consistent optimization framework to extract the noise power spectrum that characterizes the interaction between a qubit or quantum sensor and its environment. Our approach adopts minimal assumptions and is robust to the presence of measurement errors. We introduce a protocol to quantify confidence intervals and a physically motivated heuristic to determine which new dynamical decoupling measurement can improve spectral reconstruction. We employ our method to reconstruct the noise spectrum of a nitrogen-vacancy sensor in diamond, resolving previously undetected nuclear species at the diamond surface and revealing that the previous measurements of low-frequency noise had overestimated its strength by an order of magnitude. Our method's noise spectrum reconstructions uncover previously unsuspected structure and offer unprecedented accuracy, setting the stage for precision noise spectroscopy-based quantum metrology., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Predicting the exact many-body quantum dynamics of polarons in materials with strong carrier-phonon interactions presents a fundamental challenge, often necessitating one to adopt approximations that sacrifice the ability to predict the transition from nonequilibrium relaxation to thermodynamic equilibrium. Here, we exploit a recent breakthrough that generalizes the concept of memory beyond its conventional temporal meaning to also encompass space. Specifically, we leverage our discovery that the dynamics of observables in systems with local couplings satisfy Green's functions with kernels that are local in time and space. This enables us to employ the dynamics of small lattices over short times to predict the dynamics of thermodynamically large lattices over arbitrarily long timescales while circumventing the deleterious impacts of finite-size effects. We thus interrogate the \textit{exact} nonequilibrium formation and migration of polarons in one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) systems, revealing that their motion approaches diffusive transport only asymptotically in time and system size. We also compare transport in 1D and 2D systems to investigate the effect of dimension in polaron migration physics, illustrating how energy variations can cause localization -- a phenomenon observable via current microscopy experiments.

Abstract

The molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxy populations exhibits diverse physical properties. We investigate the $^{12}$CO excitation of twelve dusty, luminous star-forming galaxies at $z \sim 2-4$ by combining observations of the $^{12}$CO from $J_{\rm up} = 1$ to $J_{\rm up} = 8$. The spectral line energy distribution (SLED) has a similar shape to NGC 253, M82, and local ULIRGs, with much stronger excitation than the Milky Way inner disc. By combining with resolved dust continuum sizes from high-resolution $870$-$\mu$m ALMA observations and dust mass measurements determined from multi-wavelength SED fitting, we measure the relationship between the $^{12}$CO SLED and probable physical drivers of excitation: star-formation efficiency, the average intensity of the radiation field $\langle U\rangle$, and the star-formation rate surface density. The primary driver of high-$J_{\rm up}$ $^{12}$CO excitation in star-forming galaxies is star-formation rate surface density. We use the ratio of the CO($3-2$) and CO($6-5$) line fluxes to infer the CO excitation in each source and find that the average ratios for our sample are elevated compared to observations of low-redshift, less actively star-forming galaxies and agree well with predictions from numerical models that relate the ISM excitation to the star-formation rate surface density. The significant scatter in the line ratios of a factor $\approx 3$ within our sample likely reflects intrinsic variations in the ISM properties which may be caused by other effects on the excitation of the molecular gas, such as cosmic ray ionization rates and mechanical heating through turbulence dissipation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 17 pages, 7 figures

16. Magnetic and phonon-induced effects on the non-Markovian dynamics of a single solid-state defect

The electron-phonon interaction is one of the most fundamental mechanisms in condensed matter physics. Phonons can induce memory effects in solid-state platforms when localized electronic states interact with lattice vibrations in non-unitary dynamical maps. In this work, we demonstrate how single-mode and structured phonon environments can give rise to non-Markovian dynamics of an individual negatively charged silicon-vacancy center in diamond. Using trace distance as a quantifier via numerical simulations and theoretical calculations, we identify the physical conditions for emerging and understanding non-Markovian behavior in diverse scenarios. Abstract

We present analytical expressions for the fluxes of energy and angular momentum from a point mass on an inclined spherical orbit about a Kerr black hole. The expressions are obtained using the method of Mano, Suzuki and Takasugi to construct analytical solutions of the Teukolsky equation, and are given as post-Newtonian expansions valid through 12PN, with arbitrary values for the inclination parameter $x$ and black hole spin $a$. We characterize the structure of the PN expansions in terms of their dependence on $x$ and $a$, and we validate our results against numerical calculations.

Abstract

The exact quantum dynamics of lattice models can be computationally intensive, especially when aiming for large system sizes and extended simulation times necessary to converge transport coefficients. By leveraging finite memory times to access long-time dynamics using only short-time data, generalized master equations (GMEs) can offer a route to simulating the dynamics of lattice problems efficiently. However, such simulations are limited to small lattices whose dynamics exhibit finite-size artifacts that contaminate transport coefficient predictions. To address this problem, we introduce a novel approach that exploits finite memory in time \textit{and} space to efficiently predict the many-body dynamics of dissipative lattice problems involving short-range interactions. This advance enables one to leverage the short-time dynamics of small lattices to simulate arbitrarily large systems over long times. We demonstrate the strengths of this method by focusing on nonequilibrium polaron relaxation and transport in the dispersive Holstein model, successfully simulating lattice dynamics in one and two dimensions free from finite-size effects, reducing the computational expense of such simulations by multiple orders of magnitude. Our method is broadly applicable and provides an accurate and efficient means to investigate nonequilibrium relaxation with microscopic resolution over mesoscopic length and time scales that are relevant to experiment.

Abstract

We reexamine a dynamical dark matter model with Kaluza-Klein (KK) towers of gravitons and neutrinos fitting together in the dark dimension. We show that even though gravitational decays of neutrino KK towers have little impact in cosmology the weak decay channel could have significant cosmological effects. Taking conservative upper bounds on the dark matter decay rate into two photons before recombination and on the number of effective extra neutrino species $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$ we derive constraints on the conversion rate from active to sterile species despite the dependence of the mixing angle on the KK mode mass. Abstract

Massive, intensely star-forming galaxies at high redshift require a supply of molecular gas from their gas reservoirs, replenished by infall from the surrounding circumgalactic medium, to sustain their immense star-formation rates. However, our knowledge of the extent and morphology of their cold-gas reservoirs is still in its infancy. We present the results of stacking 80 hours of JVLA observations of CO(1--0) emission -- which traces the cold molecular gas -- in 19 $z=2.0-4.5$ dusty, star-forming galaxies from the AS2VLA survey. The visibility-plane stack reveals extended emission with a half-light radius of $3.8\pm0.5$~kpc, 2--3$\times$ more extended than the dust-obscured star formation and $1.4\pm0.2\times$ more extended than the stellar emission. Similarly, stacking the [CI](1--0) observations for a subsample of our galaxies yields sizes consistent with CO(1--0). The CO(1--0) size is comparable to the [CII] halos detected around high-redshift star-forming galaxies.The bulk (up to 80\%) of molecular gas resides outside the star-forming region; only a small part of their molecular gas reservoir directly contributes to their current star formation. Abstract

Content moderation typically combines the efforts of human moderators and machine learning models. However, these systems often rely on data where significant disagreement occurs during moderation, reflecting the subjective nature of toxicity perception. Rather than dismissing this disagreement as noise, we interpret it as a valuable signal that highlights the inherent ambiguity of the content,an insight missed when only the majority label is considered. In this work, we introduce a novel content moderation framework that emphasizes the importance of capturing annotation disagreement. Our approach uses multitask learning, where toxicity classification serves as the primary task and annotation disagreement is addressed as an auxiliary task. Additionally, we leverage uncertainty estimation techniques, specifically Conformal Prediction, to account for both the ambiguity in comment annotations and the model's inherent uncertainty in predicting toxicity and disagreement.The framework also allows moderators to adjust thresholds for annotation disagreement, offering flexibility in determining when ambiguity should trigger a review. Abstract

Safe navigation in real-time is an essential task for humanoid robots in real-world deployment. Since humanoid robots are inherently underactuated thanks to unilateral ground contacts, a path is considered safe if it is obstacle-free and respects the robot's physical limitations and underlying dynamics. Existing approaches often decouple path planning from gait control due to the significant computational challenge caused by the full-order robot dynamics. In this work, we develop a unified, safe path and gait planning framework that can be evaluated online in real-time, allowing the robot to navigate clustered environments while sustaining stable locomotion. Our approach uses the popular Linear Inverted Pendulum (LIP) model as a template model to represent walking dynamics. It incorporates heading angles in the model to evaluate kinematic constraints essential for physically feasible gaits properly. In addition, we leverage discrete control barrier functions (DCBF) for obstacle avoidance, ensuring that the subsequent foot placement provides a safe navigation path within clustered environments. To guarantee real-time computation, we use a novel approximation of the DCBF to produce linear DCBF (LDCBF) constraints. We validate the proposed approach in simulation using a Digit robot in randomly generated environments. A one-dimensional cellular automaton $\tau : A^\mathbb{Z} \to A^\mathbb{Z}$ is a transformation of the full shift defined via a finite neighborhood $S \subset \mathbb{Z}$ and a local function $\mu : A^S \to A$. We study the family of cellular automata whose finite neighborhood $S$ is an interval containing $0$, and there exists a pattern $p \in A^S$ satisfying that $\mu(z) = z(0)$ if and only if $z \neq p$; this means that these cellular automata have a unique \emph{active transition}. Despite its simplicity, this family presents interesting and subtle problems, as the behavior of the cellular automaton completely depends on the structure of $p$. We show that every cellular automaton $\tau$ with a unique active transition $p \in A^S$ is either idempotent or strictly almost equicontinuous, and we completely characterize each one of these situations in terms of $p$. Abstract

Ferroelectric materials have promising applications in solar-energy conversion and electro-optic devices. The internal gradient fields produced by the macroscopic polarization may improve electronic and transport semiconducting properties. However, ferroelectrics tend to display relatively large band gaps and hence low solar-energy conversion efficiencies. In this work, we explore materials with an intrinsic inverse relation between band gap and polarization in a single ferroelectric phase. Ferroelectrics with an inverse band gap versus polarization relation are characterized by low density of states contribution at the conduction states and negligible orbital hybridization at the valence states. We use high-throughput and first principles methods to find 11 ferroelectric materials with an inverse band gap versus polarization relation in the Materials Project database. Our work provides a new pathway to design small-band gap large-polarization ferroelectrics, by simultaneously tailoring the band gap and polarization of ferroelectrics with an inverse relation through an external tuning parameter.

Abstract

We present a search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced from kaon decay that decay to two muons inside the ICARUS neutrino detector. This channel would be a signal of hidden sector models that can address outstanding issues in particle physics such as the strong CP problem and the microphysical origin of dark matter. The search is performed with data collected in the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at Fermilab corresponding to $2.41\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target. No new physics signal is observed, and we set world-leading limits on heavy QCD axions, as well as for the Higgs portal scalar among dedicated searches. Limits are also presented in a model-independent way applicable to any new physics model predicting the process $K\to \pi+S(\to\mu\mu)$, for a long-lived particle S. This result is the first search for new physics performed with the ICARUS detector at Fermilab. It paves the way for the future program of long-lived particle searches at ICARUS.

27. Symmetry breaking fluctuations split the porphyrin Q bands

Abstract

Porphyrins offer a malleable and cost-efficient platform to sculpt bioinspired technologies with tunable charge transfer, energy conversion, and photocatalytic properties. Yet, despite decades of research, the physical mechanisms that determine their electronic spectra remain elusive. Even for metal-free porphyrins, no consensus exists on the origin of the splitting of their $Q$-bands, an energetic region critical in photosynthesis. We leverage our recent statistical treatment of molecular motions in the condensed phase to predict their linear absorption spectra. By bridging exact quantum-dynamical expressions with atomistic simulations, our theory is the first to capture the spectra of representative porphyrins in solution: porphine, tetraphenylporphyrin, and tetraphenylporpholactone. Our work reveals that $Q$-band splitting arises from extreme timescale separation of nuclear motions that turn symmetry-forbidden transitions bright. We exploit these insights to propose and confirm how chemical modifications tune the optical properties of porphyrins, demonstrating the potential for developing design principles to tailor their optoelectronic behavior., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Wave-like dark matter may feature quadratic couplings to ordinary matter. This carries profound consequences for the phenomenologies of such models. It changes the dark matter density around dense objects made from ordinary matter such as planets and stars, thereby changing the sensitivity of direct detection experiments on Earth as well as implying forces on other ordinary matter objects in the vicinity. In this note we study the time dependence of the dark matter field around spherical objects of ordinary matter. This work indicates the time-scale on which accelerating objects settle into a stationary state and delineates the applicability of stationary solutions for experimental dark matter tests. Abstract

A distributed quantum computing network requires a quantum communication channel between spatially separated processing units. In superconducting circuits, such a channel can be implemented based on propagating microwave photons to encode and transfer quantum information between an emitter and a receiver. However, traveling microwave photons can be lost during the transmission, leading to the failure of information transfer. Heralding protocols can be used to detect such photon losses. In this work, we propose such a protocol and experimentally demonstrate a frequency-bin encoding method of microwave photonic modes using superconducting circuits. We deterministically encode the quantum information from a superconducting qubit by simultaneously emitting its information into two photonic modes at different frequencies, with a process fidelity of 90.4%. The frequency-bin-encoded photonic modes can be used, at the receiver processor, to detect the occurrence of photon loss. Our work thus provides a reliable method to implement high-fidelity quantum state transfer in a distributed quantum computing network, incorporating error detection to enhance performance and accuracy.

Abstract

The term sample dependence describes the troublesome tendency of nominally equivalent samples to exhibit different physical properties. High entropy oxides (HEOs) are a class of materials where sample dependence has the potential to be particularly profound due to their inherent chemical complexity. In this work, we prepare a spinel HEO of identical nominal composition by five distinct methods, spanning a range of thermodynamic and kinetic conditions: solid state, high pressure, hydrothermal, molten salt, and combustion syntheses. By structurally characterizing these five samples across all length scales with a variety of x-ray methods, we find that while the average structure is unaltered, the samples vary significantly in their local structures and their microstructures. The most profound differences are observed at intermediate length scales, both in terms of crystallite morphology and cation homogeneity. As revealed by x-ray fluorescence microscopy ideal cation homogeneity is achieved only in the case of combustion synthesis. These structural differences in turn significantly alter the observed functional properties, which we demonstrate via characterization of their magnetic response. While ferrimagnetic order is retained across all five samples, the sharpness of the transition, the size of the saturated moment, and the coercivity all show marked variations with synthesis method. We conclude that the chemical flexibility inherent to HEOs is complemented by strong synthesis method dependence, providing another axis along which to optimize these materials for a wide range of applications., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The procedure for simulating the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum linked to the spin system of a molecule for a certain nucleus entails diagonalizing the associated Hamiltonian matrix. As the dimensions of said matrix grow exponentially with respect to the spin system's atom count, the calculation of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors marks the performance of the overall process. The aim of this paper is to provide a formalization of the complete procedure of the simulation of a spin system's NMR spectrum while also explaining how to diagonalize the Hamiltonian matrix with a quantum computer, thus enhancing the overall process's performance. Two well-known quantum algorithms for calculating the eigenvalues of a matrix are analyzed and put to the test in this context: quantum phase estimation and the variational quantum eigensolver. Additionally, we present simulated results for the later approach while also addressing the hypothetical noise found in a physical quantum computer.

34. Unconditionally stable, linearised IMEX schemes for incompressible flows with variable density

Abstract

For the incompressible Navier--Stokes system with variable density and viscosity, we propose and analyse an IMEX framework treating the convective and diffusive terms semi-implicitly. This extends to variable density and second order in time some methods previously analysed for variable viscosity and constant density. We present three new schemes, both monolithic and fractional-step. All of them share the methodological novelty that the viscous term is treated in an implicit-explicit (IMEX) fashion, which allows decoupling the velocity components. Unconditional temporal stability is proved for all three variants. Furthermore, the system to solve at each time step is linear, thus avoiding the costly solution of nonlinear problems even if the viscosity follows a non-Newtonian rheological law. Our presentation is restricted to the semi-discrete case, only considering the time discretisation. In this way, the results herein can be applied to any spatial discretisation. We validate our theory through numerical experiments considering finite element methods in space. This paper formulates the completion time $\tau$ of a project network as $ \tau =\|\mathbf{R} \mathbf{t} \|_\infty $ where the rows of $\mathbf{R}$ are simple paths of the network and $\mathbf{t}$ is a column vector representing the duration of the activities. Considering this product as a linear transformation leads to interesting findings on the topological relevance of both paths and activities using singular value decomposition. The notion of spectral networks is introduced to condense the fundamental structure of the project network. A definition of project stress is introduced to establish a comparison index between two alternatives in terms of slack. Additionally, the Moore-Penrose inverse of $\mathbf{R}$ is presented to find the configuration of the durations of the activities resulting in a given simple path duration vector. The Fourier Transform (FT) is a fundamental tool that permeates modern science and technology. While chemistry undergraduates encounter the FT as early as second year, their courses often only mention it in passing because computers frequently perform it automatically behind the scenes. Although this automation enables students to focus on `the chemistry', students miss out on an opportunity to understand and use one of the most powerful tools in the scientific arsenal capable of revealing how time-dependent signals encode chemical structure. Although many educational resources introduce chemists to the FT, they often require familiarity with sophisticated mathematical and computational concepts. Here, we present a series of three self-contained, Python-based laboratory activities for undergraduates to understand the FT and apply it to analyze audio signals, an infrared (IR) spectroscopy interferogram, and a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) free induction decay (FID). In these activities, students observe how the FT reveals and quantifies the contribution of each frequency present in a temporal signal and how decay timescales dictate signal broadening. Our activities empower students with the tools to transform their own temporal datasets (e.g., FID) to a frequency spectrum. To ensure accessibility of the activities and lower the barrier to implementation, we utilize Google Colab's open-source, cloud-based platform to run Jupyter notebooks. We also offer a pre-laboratory activity that introduces students to the basics of Python and the Colab platform, and reviews the math and programming skills needed to complete the lab activities. 37. Spatio-Temporal Performance of 2D Local Inertial Hydrodynamic Models for Urban Drainage and Dam-Break Applications

Abstract

Accurate flood modeling is crucial for effective analysis and forecasting. Full momentum hydrodynamic models often require extensive computational time, sometimes exceeding the forecast horizon. In contrast, low-complexity models, like local-inertial approximations, provide accurate results in subcritical flows but may have limited skillfulness in supercritical conditions. This paper explores two main aspects: (i) the impact of urban infrastructure on 2D hydrodynamic modeling without detailed sewer and drainage data, and (ii) the accuracy of 2D local-inertial modeling using three numerical schemes (original formulation, s-centered, and s-upwind) in a dam-break scenario on complex, flat terrain. The HydroPol2D model is benchmarked against HEC-RAS 2D full momentum solver. We present one numerical case study and three real-world scenarios in S\~ao Paulo, Brazil: a detention pond with a $1$ in $100$-year inflow, a highly urbanized catchment with a $1$ in $50$-year hyetograph, and a dam-break scenario threatening a coastal city of nearly 200,000 residents. Results show that the model accurately simulates internal boundary conditions, achieving peak errors under 5\% compared to HEC-RAS 2D. However, neglecting urban infrastructure can lead to a 17.5\% difference in peak discharges at the outlet and significant mismatches in hydrographs, with computational times nearly doubling. The dam-break scenario demonstrates good predictive performance for maximum flood depths (CSI = $0.95$ for the original model, $0.92$ for s-centered, and $0.89$ for s-upwind), though the model's lack of convective inertia results in faster flood wave propagation than the full momentum solver. Abstract

3D Gaussian Splats (3DGS) have proven a versatile rendering primitive, both for inverse rendering as well as real-time exploration of scenes. In these applications, coherence across camera frames and multiple views is crucial, be it for robust convergence of a scene reconstruction or for artifact-free fly-throughs. Recent work started mitigating artifacts that break multi-view coherence, including popping artifacts due to inconsistent transparency sorting and perspective-correct outlines of (2D) splats. At the same time, real-time requirements forced such implementations to accept compromises in how transparency of large assemblies of 3D Gaussians is resolved, in turn breaking coherence in other ways. In our work, we aim at achieving maximum coherence, by rendering fully perspective-correct 3D Gaussians while using a high-quality approximation of accurate blending, hybrid transparency, on a per-pixel level, in order to retain real-time frame rates. Our fast and perspectively accurate approach for evaluation of 3D Gaussians does not require matrix inversions, thereby ensuring numerical stability and eliminating the need for special handling of degenerate splats, and the hybrid transparency formulation for blending maintains similar quality as fully resolved per-pixel transparencies at a fraction of the rendering costs. We further show that each of these two components can be independently integrated into Gaussian splatting systems. 39. Theory of atomic-scale direct thermometry using ESR-STM

Abstract

Knowledge of the occupation ratio and the energy splitting of a two-level system yields a direct readout of its temperature. Based on this principle, the determination of the temperature of an individual two-level magnetic atom was demonstrated using Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) via Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (ESR-STM). The temperature determination proceeds in two steps. First, energy splitting is determined using ESR-STM. Second, the equilibrium occupation of the two-level atom is determined in a resonance experiment of a second nearby atom, that has now two different resonant peaks, associated to the two states of the magnetic two-level atom. The ratio of the heights of its resonance peaks yields the occupation ratio. Here we present theory work to address three key aspects: first, we find how shot-noise and back-action limit the precision of this thermometry method; second, we study how the geometry of the nearby spins can be used to enhance signal-to-noise ratio. We predict ESR-STM thermometry can achieve a resolution of 10 mK using temperatures in the T= 1K range. Third, we show how ESR-STM thermometry can be used to detect thermal gradients as small as 5 mK/nm.

Abstract

HARMONI is the first light visible and near-IR integral field spectrograph for the ELT. It covers a large spectral range from 470nm to 2450nm with resolving powers from 3300 to 18000 and spatial sampling from 60mas to 4mas. It can operate in two Adaptive Optics modes - SCAO (including a High Contrast capability) and LTAO - or with NOAO. The project is preparing for Final Design Reviews. The integral field spectrograph is a key sub-system of HARMONI instrument, which forms the 2D spectral image and projects it onto the scientific detector. It has 40 operational modes with different platescales and gratings covering the band of 811-2450 nm with three resolution grades. In each of this configurations the as-built spectrograph wave-front error is strictly limited. We perform the sensitivity analysis for measurable and unknown errors and build the errors budget on this basis. Then we correct the values for the actual technological limits and perform a three-stage Monte-Carlo analysis combined with simulation of a few specific effect as the holographic grating wavefront error. Eventually, we show that it is possible to reach the target image quality in terms of the wavefront error and spectral resolution for the entire sub-system with practically feasible tolerances on design parameters., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The lack of specialized personnel and assistive technology to assist in rehabilitation therapies is one of the challenges facing the health sector today, and it is projected to increase. For researchers and engineers, it represents an opportunity to innovate and develop devices that improve and optimize rehabilitation services for the benefit of society. Among the different types of injuries, hand injuries occur most frequently. These injuries require a rehabilitation process in order for the hand to regain its functionality. This article presents the fabrication and instrumentation of an end-effector prototype, based on a five-bar configuration, for finger rehabilitation that executes a natural flexion-extension movement. The dimensions were obtained through the gradient method optimization and evaluated through Matlab. Experimental tests were carried out to demonstrate the prototype's functionality and the effectiveness of a five-bar mechanism acting in a vertical plane, where gravity influences the mechanism's performance. Position control using fifth-order polynomials with via points was implemented in the joint space. The design of the end-effector was also evaluated by performing a theoretical comparison, calculated as a function of a real flexion-extension trajectory of the fingers and the angle of rotation obtained through an IMU. As a result, controlling the two degrees of freedom of the mechanism at several points of the trajectory assures the end-effector trajectory and therefore the fingers' range of motion, which helps for full patient recovery.

Abstract

This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Abstract

The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

Abstract

ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

Abstract

For Freudenthal, the practice of mathematics in the curriculum is not a set of predetermined theories, goals and means. On the contrary, it is always associated with positively understood phenomenological processes in mathematics, as the curriculum is often used in conjunction with the transformation or development of practice. For Freudenthal (1968), educational theory was a practical endeavour from which new theoretical ideas could emerge as a kind of scientific by-product. In his view, curriculum development should not take place from the academic ivory tower, but in schools, in collaboration with teachers and students. He expressed similar ideas and, by calling for a practical curriculum, eloquently questioned curriculum theory in research and development and innovation.

46. eComplexity: Psychometric Properties to Test the Validity and Reliability of the Instrument

Abstract

Reasoning for complexity is a fundamental competency in these complex times for solutions to social problems and decision-making. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the validity and reliability of the eComplexity instrument by presenting its psychometric properties. The instrument consists of a Likert-type scale questionnaire designed to measure college students' perceptions of their mastery levels of complex reasoning competency as well as the subcompetencies that comprise it. The instrument was applied to higher education students in different countries of Latin America and Spain. The questionnaire articulates four types of thinking: systemic, scientific, critical and innovative and consists of 25 items. The methodology used was instrumental and psychometric, which seeks to demonstrate the validity and reliability of the eComplexity questionnaire. The results obtained from the research were as follows: The exploratory factor analysis indicated a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin index (KMO) > 0.80, a significance of p< 0.05 and a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.93. Likewise, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis was carried out and was possible to corroborate the internal structure validity of the instrument. In addition to Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, McDonald's Omega, and Guttman's Lambda coefficients were calculated to calculate reliability. With the results obtained it was possible to conclude that the instrument is valid and reliable, can be used in various university contexts to support integrated training necessary to address current challenges and contribute to educational research. It is recommended for future studies that the research can be expanded by using an instrument that can move from perceptual terms to measuring levels of complex reasoning mastery, but it is valuable to contrast with the students' perception to have a broader vision.

47. Implementing the CLIL Approach through Online Games in EFL Education

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to implement the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach employing online games for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning. The participants were 53 EFL Ecuadorian university students, 17 males and 36 females, who were enrolled in an English Major and a TEFL Master program. Their proficiency level corresponded to B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. The study followed a mixed-method approach, which involved the administration of a diagnostic survey, an online perceptions questionnaire, an interview, and an observation checklist. Games designed in Quizizz, Kahoot, Genially, and Socrative were implemented for 8 weeks so that the participants could access them to practice the content of each lesson. The findings revealed that the CLIL approach through games improves language learning and communication. Moreover, they foster students' confidence, knowledge retention, and comprehension of the subject matter, enhancing reasoning, problem-solving, critical thinking, and cultural awareness.

48. Learning How to Read Children's Books in the Digital Society: Book Trailers as an Educational Tool in Higher Education

Abstract

The new multimodal reading ecosystem currently contributes to the proposal of forms of mediation that take into account the hybridization of digital and analog paradigms. In this context, illustrated books intended for children can constitute an area of interest, since their discursive and aesthetic codes contribute to the development of multimodal reading strategies and to the positioning of the child reader before the information, at the same time that they generate pleasant reading and knowledge-building experiences. Accordingly, today's publishing market requires a learning process from the mediator in order to develop the corresponding strategies with which to approach children's books. Previous research has focused on the book trailer as a virtual epitext for the promotion of publications, and it has analyzed the identity of this tool to demonstrate its effectiveness in the promotion of reading. Along these lines, and with the purpose of verifying how this tool behaves in the introduction of future teachers to children's books, an intervention is proposed that is based on the creation of book trailers. A total of 860 students from the Early Childhood and Primary Education teaching degree programs participated in the intervention. It included qualitative research that analyzed the documents/epitexts created by the students, written reflections within the framework of this project and the discourse collected "a posteriori" in interviews and discussion groups on the experience. The results reveal the potential that creating book trailers has for introducing teacher trainees to illustrated children's books within the framework of the digital society.

49. Entangled Co-Design with a Trickster: Speculative Framing and Reframing

Abstract

Speculative design, as a diverse set of methods that aim to offer critique, can be challenging to engage productively. In this design case, we share how a prior, stalled design project--an ambitious vision of interdisciplinary design education partnered with business and housing development projects in Santa Fe, New Mexico--provided compelling precedent as we sought to reframe during the COVID-19 pandemic. We recognized that solution-focused ways of working in the prior project left the design problem undefined. As we began the design work detailed in this case, we leveraged the perspectives and design knowledge of our interdisciplinary team of faculty and students. While design cases often emphasize the designed training or program, we focus on our reframing process, sharing vignettes as we prepared to and participated in activities at a design workshop, and then used our own design practices to engage in problem framing workshops. In sharing these accounts, we characterize the pandemic as a trickster and speculative co-designer, who revealed much about how our efforts were entangled with institutional structures. Across these punctuated vignettes of design work, we highlight how an initial broad problem frame invited this trickster to participate and how the application of problem framing tools wrested framing agency from the trickster. Collectively, this anchored our attention to systemic inequities in ways that troubled notions of sustainability.

50. Didactic Sequence for the Introduction of Infrared Absorption Spectrophotometry at the High School Level

Abstract

A didactic sequence is proposed using an infrared puzzle and a didactic questionnaire for the teaching-learning of infrared spectroscopy at the upper secondary level. The didactic sequence that was designed was implemented in person in the subject of Chemistry IV at the high school level, corresponding to the sixth semester of the curriculum of the National School of Sciences and Humanities (CCH), Vallejo Campus, of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In the didactic sequence, students understand the importance of functional groups where they determine organic compounds, by identifying regularities, properties, and structure of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids. After applying the didactic sequence, a post-test questionnaire was applied, and the results showed that the students significantly improved their knowledge of IR when using the puzzle that allowed them to correctly identify the bands that identify the carbonyl group.
