The purpose of this note is twofold: firstly, it intends to bring to light an apparently unknown property of the product of the extreme zeros of Laguerre polynomials, which in a very particular case leads to a twenty-year-old conjecture for Hermite polynomials posed by Gazeau, Josse-Michaux, and Moncea while developing numerical methods in quantum mechanics; and secondly to progress towards the solution of this problem as an application of a parametric eigenvalue problem.

Starting from a doubly infinite sequence of complex numbers, the aim of this paper is to extend certain Markov inequalities for the determinant of Hankel matrices and the zeros of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials on the real line (A. Markov in Notes of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, 74 (Appendix n. 2) (1894) 1-30. English translation, by J. Shohat, Duke Math. J. 7 (1940), 85-96) to the Toeplitz case, where the central role is played by CD kernels and paraorthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. In particular, we consider the case in which the starting sequence is a two-sided P\'olya frequency sequence.

In [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012)], while looking for spin chains that admit perfect state transfer, Vinet and Zhedanov found an apparently new sequence of orthogonal polynomials, that they called para-Krawtchouk polynomials, defined on a bilinear lattice. In this note we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the regularity of solutions of the corresponding functional equation. Moreover, the functional Rodrigues formula and a closed formula for the recurrence coefficients are presented. As a consequence, we characterize all solutions of the functional equation, including as very particular cases the Meixner, Charlier, Krawtchouk, Hahn, and para-Krawtchouk polynomials., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2102.00033

In his monograph [Classical and quantum orthogonal polynomials in one variable, Cambridge University Press, 2005 (paperback edition 2009)], Ismail conjectured that certain structure relations involving the Askey-Wilson operator characterize proper subsets of the set of all $\mathcal{D}_q$-classical orthogonal polynomials, here to be understood as the Askey-Wilson polynomials and their limit cases. In this paper we give two characterization theorems for $\mathcal{D}_q$-semiclassical (and classical) orthogonal polynomials in consonance with the pioneering works by Maroni [Ann. Mat. Pura. Appl. (1987)] and Bonan, Lubinsky, and Nevai [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 18 (1987)] for the standard derivative, re-establishing in this context the perfect "symmetry" between the standard derivative and the Askey-Wilson operator. As an application, we present a sequence of $\mathcal{D}_q$-semiclassical orthogonal polynomials of class two that disproves Ismail's conjectures. Further results are presented for Hahn's operator.

Muography is an imaging technique based on attenuation of the directional muon flux traversing geological or anthropic structures. Several simulation frameworks help to perform muography studies by combining specialised codes from the muon generation (CORSIKA and CRY) and the muon transport (GEANT4, PUMAS, and MUSIC) to the detector performance (GEANT4). This methodology is very precise but consumes significant computational resources and time. In this work, we present the end-to-end python-based MUographY Simulation Code. MUYSC implements a muography simulation framework capable of rapidly estimating rough muograms of any geological structure worldwide. MUYSC generates the muon flux at the observation place, transports the muons along the geological target, and determines the integrated muon flux detected by the telescope. Additionally, MUYSC computes the muon detector parameters (acceptance, solid angle, and angular resolution) and reconstructs the 3-dimensional density distribution of the target. We evaluated its performance by comparing it with previous results of several simulation frameworks.

The main result proved in [The eigenvalues of a tridiagonal matrix in biogeography, Appl. Math. Comput. 218 (2011) 195-201; MR2821464] by B. Igelnik and D. Simon is virtually the Sylvester determinant.

It is proved that $$\left(\frac{x^n}{1-e^{-x}}\right)^{(n)}>0$$ for all $x\in (\log 2, \infty)$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$, which improves the result of [Al-Musallam and Bustoz in Ramanujan J. 11 (2006) 399-402].

In an earlier work [K. Castillo et al., J. Math. Anal. Appl., 514 (2022) 126358], we give positive answer to the first, and apparently more easy, part of a conjecture of M. Ismail concerning the characterization of the continuous $q$-Jacobi polynomials, Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials or special or limiting cases of them. In this note we present an example that disproves the second part of such a conjecture, and so this issue is definitively closed.

We give positive answer to two conjectures posed by M. E. H Ismail in his monograph [Classical and quantum orthogonal polynomials in one variable, Cambridge University Press, 2005].

This manuscript contains a small portion of the algebraic theory of orthogonal polynomials developed by Maroni and their applicability to the study and characterization of the classical families, namely Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi, and Bessel polynomials. It is presented a cyclical proof of some of the most relevant characterizations, particularly those due to Al-Salam and Chihara, Bochner, Hahn, Maroni, and McCarthy. Two apparently new characterizations are also added. Moreover, it is proved through an equivalence relation that, up to constant factors and affine changes of variables, the four families of polynomials named above are the only families of classical orthogonal polynomials.

The purpose of this note is to characterize those orthogonal polynomials sequences $(P_n)_{n\geq0}$ for which $$ \pi(x)\mathcal{D}_q P_n(x)=(a_n x+b_n)P_n(x)+c_n P_{n-1}(x),\quad n=0,1,2,\dots, $$ where $\mathcal{D}_q$ is the Askey-Wilson operator, $\pi$ is a polynomial of degree at most 2, and $(a_n)_{n\geq0}$, $(b_n)_{n\geq0}$ and $(c_n)_{n\geq0}$ are sequences of complex numbers such that $c_n\neq0$ for $n=1,2,\dots$.

The purpose of this note is twofold: firstly to characterize all the sequences of orthogonal polynomials $(P_n)_{n\geq 0}$ such that $$ \frac{\triangle}{{\bf \triangle} x(s-1/2)}P_{n+1}(x(s-1/2))=c_n(\triangle +2\,\mathrm{I})P_n(x(s-1/2)), $$ where $\mathrm{I}$ is the identity operator, $x$ defines a class of lattices with, generally, nonuniform step-size, and $\triangle f(s)=f(s+1)-f(s)$; and secondly to present, in a friendly way, a method to deal with these kind of problems.

In [Castillo \& Mbouna, Indag. Math. {\bf 31} (2020) 223-234], the concept of $\pi_N$-coherent pairs of order $(m,k)$ with index $M$ is introduced. This definition, implicitly related with the standard derivative operator, automatically leaves out the so-called discrete orthogonal polynomials. The purpose of this note is twofold: first we use the (discrete) Hahn difference operator and rewrite the known results in this framework; second, as an application, we describe exhaustively the (discrete) self-coherent pairs in the situation whether $M=0$, $N\leq2$, and $(m,k)=(1,0)$. This is proved by describing in a unified way the classical orthogonal polynomials with respect to Jackson's operator as special or limiting cases of a four parametric family of $q$-polynomials. The purpose of this note is to establish, from the hypergeometric-type difference equation introduced by Nikiforov and Uvarov, new tractable sufficient conditions for the monotonicity with respect to a real parameter of zeros of classical discrete orthogonal polynomials. This result allows one to carry out a systematic study of the monotonicity of zeros of classical orthogonal polynomials on linear, quadratic, q-linear, and q-quadratic grids. In particular, we analyze in a simple and unified way the monotonicity of the zeros of Hahn, Charlier, Krawtchouk, Meixner, Racah, dual Hahn, q-Meixner, quantum q-Krawtchouk, q-Krawtchouk, affine q-Krawtchouk, q-Charlier, Al-Salam-Carlitz, q-Hahn, little q-Jacobi, little q-Laguerre/Wall, q-Bessel, q-Racah and dual q-Hahn polynomials.

The purpose of this note is to point out that the main result of [M. Chamberland, When Are All the Zeros of a Polynomial Real and Distinct? Amer. Math. Monthly. 127 (2020) 449-451] is implicitly contained in the elementary lore of the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the real line.

The aim of this paper is to prove that Markov's theorem on variation of zeros of orthogonal polynomials on the real line [Math. Ann., 27:177-182,1886] remains essentially valid in the case of paraorthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.

The purpose of this note is to give an affirmative answer to a conjecture appearing in [Integral Transforms Spec. Funct. 26 (2015) 90-95].

Let ${\bf u}$ be a nonzero linear functional acting on the space of polynomials. Let $\mathbf{D}_{q,\omega}$ be a Hahn operator acting on the dual space of polynomials. Suppose that there exist polynomials $\phi$ and $\psi$, with $\mathrm{deg}\,\phi\leq2$ and $\mathrm{deg}\,\psi\leq1$, so that the functional equation $$ \mathbf{D}_{q,\omega}(\phi {\bf u})=\psi{\bf u} $$ holds, where the involved operations are defined in a distributional sense. In this note we state necessary and sufficient conditions, involving only the coefficients of $\phi$ and $\psi$, such that ${\bf u}$ is regular, that is, there exists a sequence of orthogonal polynomials with respect to ${\bf u}$. A key step in the proof relies upon the fact that a distributional Rodrigues-type formula holds without assuming that ${\bf u}$ is regular.

The purpose of this note is to extend in a simple and unified way some results on orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $$\frac{|T_m(x)|^p}{\sqrt{1-x^2}}\;,\quad-1-1$.

In a companion paper [On semiclassical orthogonal polynomials via polynomial mappings, J. Math. Anal. Appl. (2017)] we proved that the semiclassical class of orthogonal polynomials is stable under polynomial transformations. In this work we use this fact to derive in an unified way old and new properties concerning the sieved ultraspherical polynomials of the first and second kind. In particular we derive ordinary differential equations for these polynomials. As an application, we use the differential equation for sieved ultraspherical polynomials of the first kind to deduce that the zeros of these polynomials mark the locations of a set of particles that are in electrostatic equilibrium with respect to a particular external field.

The purpose of this note is twofold: firstly to improve the known results on variation of extreme eigenvalues of birth and death matrices and random walk matrices; and secondly to progress towards the solution of a thirty years old open problem concerning the variation of eigenvalues of these matrices. Let $M$ and $N$ be fixed non-negative integer numbers and let $\pi_N$ be a polynomial of degree $N$. Suppose that $(P_n)_{n\geq0}$ and $(Q_n)_{n\geq0}$ are two orthogonal polynomial sequences such that %their derivatives of orders $k$ and $m$ (respectively) satisfy the structure relation $$ \pi_N(x)\,P_{n+m}^{(m)}(x)= \sum_{j=n-M}^{n+N}r_{n,j}Q_{j+k}^{(k)}(x)\quad (n=0,1,\ldots)\,, $$ where $r_{n,j}$ are complex number independent of $x$. It is shown that under natural constraints, $(P_n)_{n\geq0}$ and $(Q_n)_{n\geq0}$ are semiclassical orthogonal polynomial sequences. Moreover, their corresponding moment linear functionals are related by a rational modification in the distributional sense. This leads to the concept of $\pi_N-$coherent pair with index $M$ and order $(m,k)$.

In this work we study orthogonal polynomials via polynomial mappings in the framework of the $H_q-$semiclassical class. We consider two monic orthogonal polynomial sequences $\{p_n (x)\}_{n\geq0}$ and $\{q_n(x)\}_{n\geq0}$ such that $$ p_{kn}(x)=q_n(x^k)\;,\quad n=0,1,2,\ldots\;, $$ being $k$ a fixed integer number such that $k\geq2$, and we prove that if one of the sequences $\{p_n (x)\}_{n\geq0}$ or $\{q_n(x)\}_{n\geq0}$ is $H_q-$semiclassical, then so is the other one. In particular, we show that if $\{p_n(x)\}_{n\geq0}$ is $H_q-$semiclassical of class $s\leq k-1$, then $\{q_n (x)\}_{n\geq0}$ is $H_{q^k}-$classical. This fact allows us to recover and extend recent results in the framework of cubic transformations, whenever we consider the above equality with $k=3$. The idea of blocks of recurrence relations introduced by Charris and Ismail plays a key role in our study.

The purpose of this note is to revive in $L^p$ spaces the original A. Markov ideas to study monotonicity of zeros of orthogonal polynomials. This allows us to prove and improve in a simple and unified way our previous result [Electron. Trans. Numer. Anal., 44 (2015), pp. 271-280] concerning the discrete version of A. Markov's theorem on monotonicity of zeros.

The purpose of this note is to extend in a simple and unified way the known results on interlacing of zeros of paraorthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. These polynomials can be regarded as the characteristic polynomials of any matrix similar to an unitary upper Hessenberg matrix with positive subdiagonal elements.

The purpose of this note is to establish, in terms of the primary coefficients in the framework of the tridiagonal theory developed by Delsarte and Genin in the environment of nonnegative definite Toeplitz matrices, necessary and sufficient conditions for the monotonicity with respect to a real parameter of zeros of paraorthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. It is also provided tractable sufficient conditions and an application example.
