Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most prevalent subtype of lung cancer and presents clinically with a high degree of biological heterogeneity and distinct clinical outcomes. The current paradigm of LUAD etiology posits alveolar epithelial type II (AT2) cells as the primary cell of origin, while the role of AT1 cells in LUAD oncogenesis remains unknown. Here, we examine oncogenic transformation in mouse Gram-domain containing 2 (Gramd2)+ AT1 cells via oncogenic KRASG12D. Activation of KRASG12D in AT1 cells induces multifocal LUAD, primarily of papillary histology. Furthermore, KRT8+ intermediate cell states were observed in both AT2- and AT1-derived LUAD, but SCGB3A2+, another intermediate cell marker, was primarily associated with AT1 cells, suggesting different mechanisms of tumor evolution. Collectively, our study reveals that Gramd2+ AT1 cells can serve as a cell of origin for LUAD and suggests that distinct subtypes of LUAD based on cell of origin be considered in the development of therapeutics.

The average lithium content in the Earth's crust is estimated at about 0.007%. Despite this, lithium is considered abundant and widely distributed, with significant extraction from various sources. Notably, the brines in the Salar de Atacama are highlighted for their high lithium concentration ~1800 mg/L. Lithium is currently recovered from these brines through a solar evaporation process. The brine is transferred through a series of ponds, increasing the lithium concentration from 0.2% to 6% over 18 months, while decanting other minerals like potassium, magnesium, and boron. This method is the most efficient and cost-effective globally due to the Salar de Atacama's high lithium concentration of approximately 1800 ppm and the region's intense solar radiation, which facilitates evaporation at no economic cost. Ferromanganese crusts are mineral resources distributed in the planet's oceans. These deep-sea minerals stand out for their abundance and diversity of metals, with Mn and Co being the most abundant elements. These minerals are a good alternative to diversify the extraction of elements, which today are found at low grades on the Earth's surface. For the co-processing of ferromanganese crusts to recover Co and Mn, there are few studies. These generally worked with the use of a reducing agent, and in many cases previous roasting processes. In the present investigation, two ferromanganese crusts that were collected from two seamounts in the central eastern Atlantic Ocean were characterized. Subsequently, these crusts were leached in an acid-reducing medium, adding steel waste (slag) with 99.73% Fe3O4 and 0.27% metallic iron from the steel industry as a reducing agent. Acid-reducing processes have previously been shown to yield high and rapid recoveries of Co and Mn from seabed minerals. However, there is no previous study using smelting slag as a reducing agent for the treatment of ferromanganese crusts. The best results of this research were obtained when working at 60 C, achieving joint extractions of Co and Mn of ~80% and ~40%, respectively, in 10 min. In addition, the process residues were analyzed, and the formation of contaminating elements or the precipitation of Co and Mn species was not observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In multivariate analysis, a predictive model is a mathematical/statistical model that relates a set of independent variables to dependent or response variable(s). This work presents a descriptive model that explains copper recovery from secondary sulfide minerals (chalcocite) taking into account the effects of time, heap height, superficial velocity of leaching flow, chloride concentration, particle size, porosity, and effective diffusivity of the solute within particle pores. Copper recovery is then modelled by a system of first-order differential equations. The results indicated that the heap height and superficial velocity of leaching flow are the most critical independent variables while the others are less influential under operational conditions applied. In the present study representative adjustment parameters are obtained, so that the model could be used to explore copper recovery in chloride media as a part of the extended value chain of the copper sulfides processing.

This paper describes the development and characteristics of a multi-disciplinary spina bifida clinic in Qatar considering the recently revised and globally available Guidelines for the Care of People with Spina Bifida (GCPSB).A retrospective chart review was performed on individuals in Sidra’s multidisciplinary spina bifida clinic database from January 2019 to June 2020. Their electronic health records were reviewed for demographics, as well as neurosurgical, urologic, rehabilitation, and orthopedic interventions.There were 127 patients in the database; 117 met inclusion criteria for diagnoses of myelomeningocele, meningocele, sacral agenesis/caudal regression, and/or spinal lipoma. Generally, Qatar is following GCPSB recommendations for multidisciplinary care. Consanguineous relationships, difficulties with access to urological and rehabilitation supplies and equipment, school access, and variable timing of neurosurgical closure were areas that demonstrated differences from GCPSB recommendations due to barriers in implementation.The GCPSB recommendations are applicable in an international setting such as Qatar. Despite a few barriers in implementing some of the recommendations, this new multi-disciplinary spina bifida clinic demonstrates alignment with many of the GCPSB guidelines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Obtaining reliable estimates of the effective number of breeders (Nb) and generational effective population size (Ne) for fishery‐important species is challenging because they are often iteroparous and highly abundant, which can lead to bias and imprecision. However, recent advances in understanding of these parameters, as well as the development of bias correction methods, have improved the capacity to generate reliable estimates. We utilized samples of both single‐cohort young of the year and mixed‐age adults from two geographically and genetically isolated stocks of the Australasian snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) to investigate the feasibility of generating reliable Nb and Ne estimates for a fishery species. Snapper is an abundant, iteroparous broadcast spawning teleost that is heavily exploited by recreational and commercial fisheries. Employing neutral genome‐wide SNPs and the linkage‐disequilibrium method, we determined that the most reliable Nb and Ne estimates could be derived by genotyping at least 200 individuals from a single cohort. Although our estimates made from the mixed‐age adult samples were generally lower and less precise than those based on a single cohort, they still proved useful for understanding relative differences in genetic effective size between stocks. The correction formulas applied to adjust for biases due to physical linkage of loci and age structure resulted in substantial upward modifications of our estimates, demonstrating the importance of applying these bias corrections. Our findings provide important guidelines for estimating Nb and Ne for iteroparous species with large populations. This work also highlights the utility of samples originally collected for stock structure and stock assessment work for investigating genetic effective size in fishery‐important species. Mathematical modeling of columnar leaching is a useful tool for predicting and evaluating the kinetics of copper extraction. One commonly used model for this process is the shrinking core model (SCM). In this study, the aim was to develop a model for column leaching of oxidized copper ore based on the SCM, which incorporates the ore sulfation stage before leaching. In sulfation and leaching laboratory-scale tests, we studied the effect of acid dosage (at 22.8, 34.2, and 45.6 kg/t), humidity (at 90%, 100%, and 110% of the saturation humidity of the mineral), ore granulometry (−3/4″ and −3/8″), and rest time (at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h) on sulfation. We found that the highest sulfation reached 49.7% for both granulometries in studies. In the column tests, the effects of acid dosage (at 34.2, 45.6 kg/t), ore granulometry (−3/4″, −3/8″), and rest time (at 24, 48 h) were studied. When the SCM was applied to these tests, we obtained fit qualities within 63.4% and 74.9%. By incorporating the sulfation factor into the SCM predictions, we observed an average increase in adjustment between 24% and 28%. Abstract Background There is growing interest in global health among medical trainees. Medical schools and residencies are responding to this trend by offering global health opportunities within their programs. Among United States (US) graduating pediatric residents, 40% choose to subspecialize after residency training. There is limited data, however, regarding global health opportunities within traditional post-residency, subspecialty fellowship training programs. The objectives of this study were to explore the availability and type of global health opportunities within Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited pediatric subspecialty fellowship training programs, as noted by their online report, and to document change in these opportunities over time. Methods The authors performed a systematic online review of ACGME-accredited fellowship training programs within a convenience sample of six US pediatric subspecialties. Utilizing two data sources, the American Medical Association-Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database Access (AMA-FREIDA) and individual program websites, all programs were coded for global health opportunities and opportunity types were stratified into predefined categories. Comparisons were made between 2008 and 2011 using Fisher exact test. All analyses were conducted using SAS Software v. 9.3 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). Results Of the 355 and 360 programs reviewed in 2008 and 2011 respectively, there was an increase in total number of programs listing global health opportunities on AMA-FREIDA (16% to 23%, p=0.02) and on individual program websites (8% to 16%, p=0.004). Nearly all subspecialties had an increased percentage of programs offering global health opportunities on both data sources; although only critical care experienced a significant increase (p=0.04, AMA-FREIDA). The types of opportunities differed across all subspecialties. Conclusions Global health opportunities among ACGME-accredited pediatric subspecialty fellowship programs are limited, but increasing as noted by their online report. The availability and types of these opportunities differ by pediatric subspecialty.
