Context. Weak gravitational lensing offers a powerful method to investigate the projected matter density distribution within galaxy clusters, granting crucial insights into the broader landscape of dark matter on cluster scales. Aims. In this study, we make use of the large photometric galaxy cluster data set derived from the publicly available Third Data Release of the Kilo-Degree Survey, along with the associated shear signal. Our primary objective is to model the peculiar sharp transition in the cluster profile slope, that is what is commonly referred to as the splashback radius. The data set under scrutiny includes 6962 galaxy clusters, selected by AMICO - an optimised detection algorithm of galaxy clusters - on the KiDS-DR3 data, in the redshift range of 0.1 < z < 0.6, all observed at a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 3.5. Methods. Employing a comprehensive Bayesian analysis, we model the stacked excess surface mass density distribution of the clusters. We adopt a model from recent results on numerical simulations that capture the dynamics of both orbiting and infalling materials, separated by the region where the density profile slope undergoes a pronounced deepening. Results. We find that the adopted profile successfully characterizes the cluster masses, consistent with previous works, and models the deepening of the slope of the density profiles measured with weak-lensing data up to the outskirts. Moreover, we measure the splashback radius of galaxy clusters and show that its value is close to the radius within which the enclosed overdensity is 200 times the mean matter density of the Universe, while theoretical models predict a larger value consistent with a low accretion rate. This points to a potential bias of optically selected clusters preferentially characterized by a high density at small scales compared to a pure mass-selected cluster sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We present an analysis of the galaxy stellar mass function (SMF) of 14 known protoclusters between $2.0 < z < 2.5$ in the COSMOS field, down to a mass limit of $10^{9.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. We use existing photometric redshifts with a statistical background subtraction, and consider star-forming and quiescent galaxies identified from $(NUV - r)$ and $(r - J)$ colours separately. Our fiducial sample includes galaxies within 1 Mpc of the cluster centres. The shape of the protocluster SMF of star-forming galaxies is indistinguishable from that of the general field at this redshift. Quiescent galaxies, however, show a flatter SMF than in the field, with an upturn at low mass, though this is only significant at $\sim 2\sigma$. There is no strong evidence for a dominant population of quiescent galaxies at any mass, with a fraction of $< 15\%$ at $1\sigma$ confidence for galaxies with log$M_{\ast}/M_{\odot} < 10.5$. We compare our results with a sample of galaxies groups at $1 < z < 1.5$, and demonstrate that a significant amount of environmental quenching must take place between these epochs, increasing the relative abundance of high-mass ($\rm M > 10^{10.5} M_{\odot}$) quiescent galaxies by a factor of $\gtrsim$ 2. We present a new galaxy cluster search in the COSMOS field through the use of the Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects (AMICO). We produced a new cluster and group catalogue up to $z=2$, by performing an innovative application of AMICO with respect to previous successful applications to wide-field surveys, in terms of depth (down to $r < 26.7$), small area covered ($1.69 deg^2$ of unmasked area) and redshift extent. This sample, and the comparative analysis we performed with the X-rays, allowed for the calibration of mass-proxy scaling relations up to $z=2$ and down to less than $10^{13} M_{sun}$ and constitutes the base for the refinement of the cluster model for future applications of AMICO, like the analysis of upcoming Euclid data. AMICO is based on an optimal linear matched filter and detects clusters in photometric galaxy catalogues using galaxy location, photometric redshift and, in the simplest case, one galaxy property. We used one magnitude as galaxy property, avoiding explicit use of galaxy colour, and performed 3 independent runs in the r, Y and H bands using both COSMOS2020 and COSMOS2015 galaxy catalogues. The final catalogue resulting from matching the results of the three runs contains 1269 and 666 candidate clusters with $S/N >3.0$ and $>3.5$, respectively. Most of the unmatched ones have $S/N <3.5$ which can be chosen as cut for a more robust sample. We assigned X-ray properties to our detections via matching with a public X-ray group sample and by estimating, for unmatched detections, X-ray properties at the location of AMICO candidates based on Chandra+XMM-Newton data. 622 are the candidates with X-ray flux estimate. We present a multiwavelength observation of a cool core that does not appear to be associated with any galaxy, in a nearby cluster, Abell~1142. Its X-ray surface brightness peak of $\lesssim2$ keV is cooler than the ambient intracluster gas of $\gtrsim3$ keV, and is offset from its brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) by 80 kpc in projection, representing the largest known cool core -- BCG separation. This BCG-less cool core allows us to measure the metallicity of a cluster center with a much-reduced contribution from the interstellar medium (ISM) of the BCG. XMM-Newton observation reveals a prominent Fe abundance peak of $1.07^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ Z$_{\odot}$ and an $\alpha/$Fe abundance ratio close to the solar ratio, fully consistent with those found at the centers of typical cool core clusters. This finding hints that BCGs play a limited role in enriching the cluster centers. However, the discussion remains open, given that the $\alpha/$Fe abundance ratios of the orphan cool core and the BCG ISM are not significantly different. Abell~1142 may have experienced a major merger more than 100 Myr ago, which has dissociated its cool core from the BCG. This implies that the Fe abundance peak in cool core clusters can be resilient to cluster mergers. Our recent IRAM 30-m observation did not detect any CO emission at its X-ray peak and we find no evidence for massive runaway cooling in the absence of recent AGN feedback. We constrain the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological parameter $\sigma_{8}$ by applying the extreme value statistics for galaxy cluster mass on the AMICO KiDS-DR3 catalog. We sample the posterior distribution of the parameters by considering the likelihood of observing the largest cluster mass value in a sample of $N_{\textrm{obs}} = 3644$ clusters with intrinsic richness $\lambda^{*} > 20$ in the redshift range $z\in[0.10, 0.60]$. We obtain $\sigma_{8}=0.90_{-0.18}^{+0.20}$, consistent within $1\sigma$ with the measurements obtained by the Planck collaboration and with previous results from cluster cosmology exploiting AMICO KiDS-DR3. The constraints could improve by applying this method to forthcoming missions, such as $\textit{Euclid}$ and LSST, which are expected to deliver thousands of distant and massive clusters., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

Protoclusters are the densest regions in the distant universe ($z>2$) and are the progenitors of massive galaxy clusters ($M_{halo}>10^{14}{\rm M}_\odot$) in the local universe. They undoubtedly play a key role in early massive galaxy evolution and they may host the earliest sites of galaxy quenching or even induce extreme states of star formation. Studying protoclusters therefore not only gives us a window into distant galaxy formation but also provides an important link in our understanding of how dense structures grow over time and modify the galaxies within them. Current protocluster samples are completely unable to address these points because they are small and selected in a heterogeneous way. We propose the Roman-Cosmic Noon survey, whose centerpiece is an extremely deep (30ksec) and wide area (10 deg$^2$) prism slitless spectroscopy survey to identify the full range of galaxy structures at $210^{10.5} {\rm M}_\odot$ across the full range of star formation histories as well as many more lower mass star-forming galaxies. The survey will also contain field galaxies to much lower masses than in the High Latitude Wide Area Survey, but over an area dwarfing any current or planned deep spectroscopy probe at $z>2$. With the prism spectroscopy and some modest additional imaging this survey will measure precise stellar mass functions, quenched fractions, galaxy and protocluster morphologies, stellar ages, emission-line based SFRs, and metallicities. We provide novel constraints on the parameters defining the universal pressure profile (UPP) within clusters of galaxies, and explore their dependence on the cluster mass and redshift, from measurements of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Compton-$y$ profiles. We employ both the $\textit{Planck}$ 2015 MILCA and the ACT-DR4 $y$ maps over the common $\sim 2,100\,\text{deg}^2$ footprint. We combine existing cluster catalogs based on KiDS, SDSS and DESI observations, for a total of 23,820 clusters spanning the mass range $10^{14.0}\,\text{M}_{\odot}

Galaxy clusters are biased tracers of the underlying matter density field. At very large radii beyond about 10 Mpc/\textit{h}, the shear profile shows evidence of a second-halo term. This is related to the correlated matter distribution around galaxy clusters and proportional to the so-called halo bias. We present an observational analysis of the halo bias-mass relation based on the AMICO galaxy cluster catalog, comprising around 7000 candidates detected in the third release of the KiDS survey. We split the cluster sample into 14 redshift-richness bins and derive the halo bias and the virial mass in each bin by means of a stacked weak lensing analysis. The observed halo bias-mass relation and the theoretical predictions based on the $\Lambda$CDM standard cosmological model show an agreement within $2\sigma$. The mean measurements of bias and mass over the full catalog give $M_{200c} = (4.9 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{13} M_{\odot}/\textit{h}$ and $b_h \sigma_8^2 = 1.2 \pm 0.1$. With the additional prior of a bias-mass relation from numerical simulations, we constrain the normalization of the power spectrum with a fixed matter density $\Omega_m = 0.3$, finding $\sigma_8 = 0.63 \pm 0.10$.

We introduce a new effective strategy to assign group and cluster membership probabilities $P_{mem}$ to galaxies using photometric redshift information. Large dynamical ranges both in halo mass and cosmic time are considered. The method takes the magnitude distribution of both cluster and field galaxies as well as the radial distribution of galaxies in clusters into account using a non-parametric formalism and relies on Bayesian inference to take photometric redshift uncertainties into account. We successfully test the method against 1,208 galaxy clusters within redshifts $z=0.05-2.58$ and masses $10^{13.29-14.80}~M_\odot$ drawn from wide field simulated galaxy mock catalogs developed for the Euclid mission. Median purity $(55^{+17}_{-15})\%$ and completeness $(95^{+5}_{-10})\%$ are reached for galaxies brighter than 0.25$L_\ast$ within $r_{200}$ of each simulated halo and for a statistical photometric redshift accuracy $\sigma((z_s-z_p)/(1+z_s))=0.03$. The mean values $p=56\%$ and $c=93\%$ have sub-percent uncertainties. Accurate photometric redshifts ($\sigma((z_s-z_p)/(1+z_s))\lesssim0.05$) and robust estimates for the cluster redshift and the center coordinates are required. The method is applied to derive accurate richness estimates. A statistical comparison between the true ($N_{\rm true}$) vs estimated richness ($\lambda=\sum P_{mem}$) yields on average to unbiased results, $Log(\lambda/N_{\rm true})=-0.0051\pm0.15$. The scatter around the mean of the logarithmic difference between $\lambda$ and the halo mass is 0.10~dex, for massive halos $\gtrsim10^{14.5}~M_\odot$. Our estimates could be useful to calibrate independent cluster mass estimates from weak lensing, SZ, and X-ray studies. We have selected a complete sample of 80 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) from the WMAP 7-yr catalog within the SDSS area, all with measured redshift, and have inspected their SEDs looking for evidence of an AGN torus emission. A SED fitting algorithm has found such evidence for seven objects and an uncertain indication for one more. These 8 FSRQs belong to the sub-sample of 55 sources showing the optical--ultraviolet bump interpreted as thermal emission from a standard accretion disc. Torus luminosities have been estimated for the eight objects whose torus was identified by the fitting algorithm. For the other 47 FSRQs in the sub-sample we have derived upper limits to the torus luminosity. Our analysis shows that the torus can show up clearly only under quite special conditions: low luminosity and preferentially low peak frequency of the beamed synchrotron emission from the jet; high torus luminosity, close to that of the accretion disc. This implies that the inferred ratios of torus to disc luminosity are biased high. The median value, considering upper limits as detections, is $L_{\rm torus}/L_{\rm disc}\sim 1$ while studies of radio quiet quasars yield average ratios $\langle L_{\rm torus}/L_{\rm disc}\rangle \simeq 1/3-1/2$. Our results are compatible with the FSRQ tori having the same properties of those of radio quiet quasars. At variance with Plotkin et al. (2012), who investigated a sample of optically selected BL Lacs, we find that the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) infrared colors do not allow us to draw any conclusion on the presence or absence of tori associated with WMAP selected blazars. With the latter selection blazars of all types (FSRQs with and without evidence of torus, BL Lacs, blazars of unknown type) occupy the same region of the WISE color-color plane, and their region overlaps that of SDSS quasars with point-like morphology., Comment: A&A accepted, 18 pages, 7 figures

We search for high redshift ($z\sim$1-2) galaxy clusters using low luminosity radio galaxies (FR~I) as beacons and our newly developed Poisson Probability Method (PPM) based on photometric redshift information and galaxy number counts. We use a sample of 32 FR~Is within the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field from Chiaberge et al. (2009) catalog. We derive a reliable subsample of 21 {\it bona fide} Low Luminosity Radio Galaxies (LLRGs) and a subsample of 11 High Luminosity Radio Galaxies (HLRGs), on the basis of photometric redshift information and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) radio fluxes. The LLRGs are selected to have 1.4~GHz rest frame luminosities lower than the fiducial FR~I/FR~II divide. This also allows us to estimate the comoving space density of sources with $L_{1.4}\simeq 10^{32.3}\,\hbox{erg}\,\hbox{s}^{-1}\,\hbox{Hz}^{-1}$ at $z\simeq 1.1$, which strengthens the case for a strong cosmological evolution of these sources. In the fields of the LLRGs and HLRGs we find evidence that 14 and 8 of them reside in rich groups or galaxy clusters, respectively. Thus, overdensities are found around $\sim70\%$ of the FR~Is, independently of the considered subsample. This rate is in agreement with the fraction found for low redshift FR~Is and it is significantly higher than that of FR~IIs at all redshifts. Although our method is primarily introduced for the COSMOS survey, it may be applied to both present and future wide field surveys such as SDSS Stripe 82, LSST, and Euclid. We describe a new method (Poisson Probability Method, PPM) to search for high redshift galaxy clusters and groups by using photometric redshift information and galaxy number counts. The method relies on Poisson statistics and is primarily introduced to search for Mpc-scale environments around a specific beacon. The PPM is tailored to both the properties of the FR I radio galaxies in the Chiaberge et al. (2009) sample, that are selected within the COSMOS survey, and on the specific dataset used. We test the efficiency of our method of searching for cluster candidates against simulations. Two different approaches are adopted. i) We use two z~1 X-ray detected cluster candidates found in the COSMOS survey and we shift them to higher redshift up to z=2. We find that the PPM detects the cluster candidates up to z=1.5, and it correctly estimates both the redshift and size of the two clusters. ii) We simulate spherically symmetric clusters of different size and richness, and we locate them at different redshifts (i.e. z = 1.0,1.5, and 2.0) in the COSMOS field. We find that the PPM detects the simulated clusters within the considered redshift range with a statistical 1-sigma redshift accuracy of ~0.05. The PPM is an efficient alternative method for high-redshift cluster searches that may also be applied to both present and future wide field surveys such as SDSS Stripe 82, LSST, and Euclid. Most Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope exhibit a delay of up to about 10 seconds between the trigger time of the hard X-ray signal as measured by the Fermi GBM and the onset of the MeV-GeV counterpart detected by the LAT. This delay may hint at important physics, whether it is due to the intrinsic variability of the inner engine or it is related to quantum dispersion effects in the velocity of light propagation from the sources to the observer. It is critical to have a proper assessment of how these time delays affect the overall properties of the light curves. We cross-correlated the 5 brightest GRBs of the 1st Fermi LAT Catalog by means of the continuous correlation function (CCF) and of the Discrete Correlation Function (DCF). A maximum in the DCF suggests the presence of a time lag between the curves, whose value and uncertainty are estimated through a Gaussian fitting of the DCF profile and light curve simulation via a Monte Carlo approach. The cross-correlation of the observed LAT and GBM light curves yields time lags that are mostly similar to those reported in the literature, but they are formally consistent with zero. The cross-correlation of the simulated light curves yields smaller errors on the time lags and more than one time lag for GRBs 090902B and 090926A; for all 5 GRBs, the time lags are significantly different from zero and consistent with those reported in the literature, when only the secondary maxima are considered for those two GRBs. The DCF method evidences the presence of time lags between the LAT and GBM light curves and underlines their complexity. While this suggests that the delays should be ascribed to intrinsic physical mechanisms, more sensitivity and larger statistics are needed to assess whether time lags are universally present in the early GRB emission and which dynamical time scales they trace., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We have selected a complete sample of flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) from the WMAP 7-yr catalog within the SDSS area, all with measured redshift, and have compared the black hole mass estimates based on fitting a standard accretion disk model to the `blue bump' with those obtained from the commonly used single epoch virial method. The sample comprises 79 objects with a flux density limit of 1 Jy at 23 GHz, 54 of which (68%) have a clearly detected `blue bump'. Thirty-four of the latter have, in the literature, black hole mass estimates obtained with the virial method. The mass estimates obtained from the two methods are well correlated. If the calibration factor of the virial relation is set to $f=4.5$, well within the range of recent estimates, the mean logarithmic ratio of the two mass estimates is equal to zero with a dispersion close to the estimated uncertainty of the virial method. The fact that the two independent methods agree so closely in spite of the potentially large uncertainties associated with each lends strong support to both of them. The distribution of black-hole masses for the 54 FSRQs in our sample with a well detected blue bump has a median value of $7.4\times 10^{8}\,M_\odot$. It declines at the low mass end, consistent with other indications that radio loud AGNs are generally associated with the most massive black holes, although the decline may be, at least partly, due to the source selection. The distribution drops above $\log(M_\bullet/M_\odot) = 9.4$, implying that ultra-massive black holes associated with FSRQs must be rare., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. In spiral galaxies, we explain their non-Keplerian rotation curves (RCs) by means of a non-luminous component embedding their stellar-gaseous disks. Understanding the detailed properties of this component (labelled Dark Matter, DM) is one of the most pressing issues of Cosmology. We investigate the recent relationship (claimed by Walker et al. 2010, hereafter W+10) between $r$, the galaxy radial coordinate, and $V_h(r)$, the dark halo contribution to the circular velocity at $r$, {\it a}) in the framework of the Universal Rotation Curve (URC) paradigm and directly {\it b}) by means of the kinematics of a large sample of DM dominated spirals. We find a general agreement between the W+10 claim, the distribution of DM emerging from the URC and that inferred in the (low luminosity) objects of our sample. We show that such a phenomenology, linking the spiral's luminosity, radii and circular velocities, implies an evident inconsistency with (naive) predictions in the $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) scenario., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. v2: typos corrected, minor rephrasings, Natural Science published version
