Abstract

This paper proposes a technique for determining the distributions of the electric field and space charge in the insulation of power cables by using the data acquired with the thermal step method (TSM). The TSM consists of applying a low-temperature step to a short-circuited or dc-energized cable and of acquiring a transient capacitive current. The processing technique described in this paper is based on a series decomposition of the electric field, the coefficients of the series being identified via the measured current. The accuracy and the stability of the calculation method are evaluated by simulations performed using various distributions of the electric field and different noise levels. An application of the technique to space charge measurements in a dc conditioned power cable is then presented. Index Terms--High-voltage cable, power cable, space charge, thermal step method (TSM).

Abstract

The presence of space charge changes locally the electric field distribution in power cable insulation and may play an important role in tree development, thus accelerating the dielectric breakdown. This paper is concerned with the computation of the electric field in polyethylene-insulated power cables affected by water trees which grow from the following: 1) the inner semiconducting layer; 2) the outer semiconducting layer; and 3) the inner and outer semiconducting layers, taking into account the space charge corresponding to the ions present in the treeing area. Space charge in plane samples where trees have been developed in an accelerated manner was estimated using the thermal step method. Average charge values given by space charge measurements were then used for the electric field computation in cable insulation with continuous or/and individual water trees. For the calculation of the electric field, an analytical and a numerical method have been used. This paper shows that the space charge changes the electric field distribution inside and outside the trees (the field increases in some areas and decreases in others) and that the field variations depend on the magnitude and on the polarity of the space charge, as well as on the dimensions of the water trees developed in the cable insulation. The obtained results show that, in the presence of water trees and space charge, the initiation of electric trees is more probable in the case of individual water trees than in the case of continuous water trees. Abstract

The steady-state electrical conduction current for single and multilayer polyimide (PI) nanocomposite films was observed at the low and high electric field for different temperatures. Experimental data were fitted to conduction models to investigate the dominant conduction mechanism in these films. In most films, space charge limited current (SCLC) and Poole–Frenkel current displayed dominant conduction. At a high electric field, the ohmic conduction was replaced by current–voltage dependency. Higher conduction current was observed for nanocomposite films at a lower temperature, but it declined at a higher temperature. PI nanocomposite multilayer films showed a huge reduction in the conduction current at higher electric fields and temperatures. The conclusions derived in this study would provide the empirical basis and early breakdown phenomenon explanation when performing dielectric strength and partial discharge measurements of PI-based nanocomposite insulation systems of electric motors. Abstract

Polymer nanocomposite-based dielectric materials are playing a vital role in the area of electrical insulation research and developments. The nanoparticle dispersion and interface region are the crucial parts of these developments. This chapter begins with the description of physical properties and their derived nanoparticles of polyimide (PI) films. Then, the detailed synthesis process of PI/nanocomposite multilayer film and its optimization is discussed in this chapter. Several factors in the synthesis process, which can influence the quality of the film, are discussed. After synthesis, the dielectric properties such as space charge were measured, and the results are compared with single and multilayer PI/nanocomposite films. Simulations and modeling help to shed light on the experimental results and create an understanding of polymer nanocomposite properties. Therefore, the PI/nanocomposite multilayer 3D model based on boundary conditions obtained from SEM/TEM images of synthesized samples was also constructed and simulated in COMSOL multiphysics software. The nanoparticle agglomeration and the impact of nanoparticle dispersion on the electrical properties of the material are described in detail in this model. The results demonstrate that the nanoparticle dispersion is improved by using a thin layer of PI/nanocomposite on PI film. As a result, fewer space charges and low electric fields are observed in multilayer films.

Abstract

This paper shows the space charge behavior of LDPE-based nanomaterials containing graphene oxide as a filler. Space charge was evaluated through the pulse electroacoustic technique at 40 kV/mm and two temperatures, i.e. 20°C and 40°C. From experiments a massive bipolar charge injection and accumulation at room temperature is observed in the neat LDPE sample. In particular, a positive charge packet is injected from the anode and crosses quite rapidly the insulation, dominating space charge accumulation in the bulk. Charge packets are totally absent in LDPE-GO nanocomposites, thus leading to a lower space charge accumulation and consequently to a lower electric field distortion. The best space charge behavior is obtained with low filler concentration, i.e. < 0.1 wt%.
