Context. Stars in transition phases, like those showing the B[e] phenomenon and luminous blue variables (LBVs), undergo strong, often irregular mass ejection events. The prediction of these phases in stellar evolution models is therefore extremely difficult if not impossible. As a result, their effective temperatures, their luminosities and even their true nature are not fully known. Aims. A suitable procedure to derive the stellar parameters of these types of objects is to use the BCD spectrophotometric classification system, based on the analysis of the Balmer discontinuity. The BCD parameters ({\lambda}_1, D) are independent of interstellar extinction and circumstellar contributions. Methods. We obtained low-resolution spectra for 14 stars with the B[e] phenomenon and LBVs. Using the BCD method, we derived the stellar and physical parameters. The study was complemented with the information provided by the JHK colour-colour diagram. Results. For each star, the BCD system gives a complete set of fundamental parameters and related quantities such as luminosity and distance. We confirmed HK Ori, HD 323771 and HD 52721 as pre-main sequence HAe/B[e], AS 202 and HD 85567 as FS CMa-type, and HD 62623 as sgB[e] stars. We classified Hen 3-847, CD-24 5721, and HD 53367 as young B[e] stars or FS CMa-type candidates, and HD 58647 as a slightly evolved B[e] star. In addition, Hen 3-1398 is an sgB[e] and MWC 877, CPD-59 2854 and LHA 120-S 65 are LBV candidates. The stellar parameters of the latter two LBVs are determined for the first time. Conclusions. Our results emphasise that the BCD system is a highly valuable tool to derive stellar parameters and physical properties of B-type stars in transition phases. This method can be combined with near-IR colour-colour diagrams to determine or confirm the evolutionary stage of emission-line stars with dust disks.

Here we show the preliminary results of a study where there seems to be a bias effect in the size distributions of the detected low-surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in different environments. In this sense, more distant groups/clusters would lack small effective radius objects, while large systems would not found in the Local Group and nearby environments. While there may be an actual shortage of large LSB galaxies in low-density environments like the Local Group, the non-detection of small (and faint) systems at large distances is clearly a selection effect. As an example, LSB galaxies with similar sizes to those of the satellites of Andromeda in the Local Group, will be certainly missed in a visual identification at the distance of Pegasus I., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

Here we show the preliminary results of a photometric study of low surface brightness objects with $\mu_{g'}~\gtrsim~25$~mag/arcsec$^2$. These objects are present in several fields obtained with GEMINI-GMOS, in the central region of the Pegasus I group. We found that their photometric characteristics are similar to the so-called dwarf spheroidal galaxies or to the ultra low surface brightness galaxies., Comment: in Spanish

We investigate the development of the colour-magnitude re- lation (CMR) of cluster galaxies. This study is carried out using a semi- analytic model of galaxy formation and evolution coupled to a sample of simulated galaxy clusters of different masses, reinforcing the conclusions reached by Jim\'enez et al. (2009). We compare both simulated and obeserved CMRs in different colour-magnitude planes, finding a very good agreement in all cases. This indicates that model parameters are correctly tuned, giving accurate values of the main properties of galaxies for further use in our study. In the present work, we perform a statistical analysis of the relative contribution to the stellar mass and metallicity of galaxies along the CMR by the different processes involved in their formation and evolution (i.e. quiescent star formation, disc instability events and galaxy mergers). Our results show that a mix of minor and major dry mergers at low redshifts is relevant in the evolution of the most luminous galaxies in the CMR. These processes contribute with low metallicity stars to the remnant galaxies, thus increasing the galaxy masses without significantly altering their colours. We investigate the origin of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) followed by early-type cluster galaxies by using a combination of cosmological N-body simulations of cluster of galaxies and a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation (Lagos, Cora & Padilla 2008). Results show good agreement between the general trend of the simulated and observed CMR. However, in many clusters, the most luminous galaxies depart from the linear fit to observed data displaying almost constant colours. With the aim of understanding this behaviour, we analyze the dependence with redshift of the stellar mass contributed to each galaxy by different processes, i.e., quiescent star formation, and starburst during major/minor and wet/dry mergers, and disk instability events. The evolution of the metallicity of the stellar component, contributed by each of these processes, is also investigated. We find that the major contribution of stellar mass at low redshift is due to minor dry merger events, being the metallicity of the stellar mass accreted during this process quite low. We present preliminary results of a spectroscopic study performed in the Antlia cluster through GEMINI-GMOS data. We present a study of the effects of mergers and interactions on the mass distribution of galactic systems in hierarchical clustering scenarios using the disc-bulge structural parameters and their dynamical properties to quantify them. We focus on the analysis of the Fundamental Mass Plane relation, finding that secular evolution phases contribute significantly to the determination of a plane with a slope in agreement to that of the observed luminosity relation. In these simulations, secular phases are responsible for the formation of compact stellar bulges with the correct structural parameter combination. We also test that the relations among these parameters agree with observations. Taking into account these results, the hierarchical growth of the structure predicts a bulge formation scenario for typical field spiral galaxies where secular evolution during dissipate mergers plays a fundamental role. Conversely, subsequent mergers can help to enlarge the bulges but do not seem to strongly modify their fundamental mass relations. Systems get to the local mass relations at different stages of evolution (i.e. different redshifts) so that their formation histories introduce a natural scatter in the relations. Our results suggest that the formation mechanisms of the bulge and disc components, satisfying their corresponding fundamental mass relations, might be coupled and that secular evolution could be the possible connecting process., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A.
