Abstract

The development of new nanophotonic devices requires the understanding and modulation of the propagating surface plasmon and phonon modes arising in plasmonic and polar dielectric materials, respectively. Here we explore the CdZnO alloy as a plasmonic material, with a tunable plasma frequency and reduced losses compared to pure CdO. By means of attenuated total reflectance, we experimentally observe the hybridization of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) with the surface phonon polariton (SPhP) in the air-CdZnO-sapphire three-layer system. We show how through the precise control of the CdZnO thickness, the resonance frequencies of the hybrid surface plasmon-phonon polariton (SPPP) are tuned in the mid-infrared, and the nature of the hybrid mode turns from a plasmon-like behavior in the thicker films to a phonon-like behavior in the thinnest films. The presence of sapphire phonons not only allows the hybrid mode to be formed, but also improves its characteristics with respect to the bare SPP. The reduced damping of the phonon oscillators allows to reduce the losses of the hybrid mode, enhancing the propagation length above 500 microns, one order of magnitude larger than that of typical SPPs, clearing the path for its application on emerging devices such as plasmonic waveguides., Comment: Supporting Information available

11. Gallium nanoparticles as antireflection structures on III-V solar cells

Abstract

The integration of nanostructures on top of solar cells has been previously demonstrated as an effective method to increase the collection efficiency by coupling to sunlight. In this work, this approach is implemented by using core-shell gallium nanoparticles (Ga-NPs) as functional light scatterers on III-V solar cells, investigating how the Ga-NPs affect their photovoltaic performance. The effect is studied in GaAs and in GaAsSbN superlattice-based solar cells with different bandgaps for a wide range of Ga-NPs sizes. After NP size optimization, average improvements in the short-circuit current around 18 are obtained in both types of solar cells with these nanostructures. The underlying physical mechanism is studied by performing optical measurements and simulations. It is found that the Ga-NPs can be treated as an antireflection coating due to both their geometry and the refractive index in the cases when their localized surface plasmon resonances do not spectrally overlap with the solar cell absorption range. Lastly, a facile method to attenuate the plasmonic effect of the Ga-NPs it is also shown as a proof of concept. In this method, an annealing treatment at low temperature is performed causing an improvement of the photovoltaic performance. This work demonstrates that Ga-NPs can successfully enhance the efficiency of III-V solar cells in a very controllable manner and paves the way for the design of new functional nanostructures.

Abstract

Introduction: Hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug, is an important therapeutic tool in the management of rheumatic diseases such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) due to its anti-inflammatory action. SLE is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that affects the connective tissue of multiple organs. Neuropsychiatric disturbances in SLE are common; however, lupus psychosis is rare, occurring in 2 to 11% of patients. The literature has described the emergence of neuropsychiatric symptoms as an adverse effect of hydroxychloroquine use, with some patients experiencing clinical depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and psychotic symptoms. Objectives: The aim of this work is to review the available evidence regarding neuropsychiatric symptoms secondary to the use of hydroxychloroquine. Methods: The case of a 50-year-old woman diagnosed with SLE, with no other relevant medical history, has been evaluated. She was brought to the emergency department due to paranoid and persecutory ideas, as well as self-referentiality, coinciding with the introduction of hydroxychloroquine in her treatment. She was admitted to the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín with a diagnostic orientation of a first psychotic episode. Results: The presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients diagnosed with SLE is so common that they constitute a diagnostic criterion for the disease. On the other hand, the medications used for therapeutic management of this disease can lead to the emergence of new neuropsychiatric symptoms or exacerbate preexisting neuropsychiatric clinical manifestations. Conclusions: The study of this case highlights the challenges in establishing a differential diagnosis between primary SLE symptoms that require an increase in hydroxychloroquine and those caused by its own treatment. It underscores the need for further studies to explore the risk of psychiatric symptoms associated with the use of hydroxychloroquine, as well as its impact on the course of underlying mental disorders. 33. A Combined Observational and Modeling Approach to Study Modern Dust Transport from the Patagonia Desert to East Antarctica

Abstract

The understanding of present atmospheric transport processes from Southern Hemisphere (SH) landmasses to Antarctica can improve the interpretation of stratigraphic data in Antarctic ice cores. In addition, long range transport can deliver key nutrients normally not available to marine ecosystems in the Southern Ocean and may trigger or enhance primary productivity. However, there is a dearth of observational based studies of dust transport in the SH. This work aims to improve current understanding of dust transport in the SH by showing a characterization of two dust events originating in the Patagonia desert (south end of South America). The approach is based on a combined and complementary use of satellite retrievals (detectors MISR, MODIS, GLAS ,POLDER, OMI,), transport model simulation (HYSPLIT) and surface observations near the sources and aerosol measurements in Antarctica (Neumayer and Concordia sites). Satellite imagery and visibility observations confirm dust emission in a stretch of dry lakes along the coast of the Tierra del Fuego (TdF) island (approx.54deg S) and from the shores of the Colihue Huapi lake in Central Patagonia (approx.46deg S) in February 2005. Model simulations initialized by these observations reproduce the timing of an observed increase in dust concentration at the Concordia Station and some of the observed increases in atmospheric aerosol absorption (here used as a dust proxy) in the Neumayer station. The TdF sources were the largest contributors of dust at both sites. The transit times from TdF to the Neumayer and Concordia sites are 6-7 and 9-10 days respectively. Lidar observations and model outputs coincide in placing most of the dust cloud in the boundary layer and suggest significant de- position over the ocean immediately downwind. Boundary layer dust was detected as far as 1800 km from the source and approx.800 km north of the South Georgia Island over the central sub-Antarctic Atlantic Ocean. Although the analysis suggests the presence of dust at approx.1500 km SW of South Africa five days after, the limited capabilities of existing satellite platforms to differentiate between aerosol types do not permit a definitive conclusion. In addition, the model simulations show dust lifting to the free troposphere as it travels south but it could not be confirmed by the satellite observations due to cloudiness. This work demonstrates that complementary information from existing transport models, satellite and surface data can yield a consistent picture of the dust transport from the Patagonia desert to Antarctica. It also illustrates the limitation of using any of these approaches individually to characterize the transport of dust in a heavily cloudy area.

Abstract

Introduction: Treatment Resistant Depression is a challenging condition with a poor outcome and limited therapeutic options. Esketamine is the enantiomer of Ketamine and has recently been approved and marketed for treating depression. Questions remain about its short- and long-term benefit, as well as its usefulness in suicide risk. Hopelessness is one of the symptoms most closely associated with suicide risk. Objectives: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of this drug on hopelessness after one month of treatment with Esketamine. Methods: The Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) was administered to patients receiving Esketamine at the Doctor Negrín University Hospital of Gran Canaria, who provided informed consent and exhibited suicidal ideations and depressive symptoms at the beginning of treatment. This scale was administered before the intranasal administration of Esketamine and after one month of treatment. Results: Participants (n=5) had an average age of 54,4 years (median 56). We observed variability in the results among the evaluated patients, although the overall trend was a decrease in scores. On average, the patients' scores decreased from 14,6 to 7,4 points (with a median change from 14 to 8 points). Conclusions: Hopelessness improved in the BHS after one month of treatment with Esketamine. These results could be of clinical significance. Hopelessness is associated with suicide risk, so we hypothesize that the improvement could have an impact on it. Nevertheless, we must exercise caution with these results: the sample size is small, patients were taking different medications, and they have diverse medical histories. Abstract

Introduction: Interest in the co-occurrence of gender dysphoria and autism spectrum disorder has gained prominence in recent years. Gender dysphoria refers to the distress experienced when there is an incongruence between gender identity and sex assigned at birth. On the other hand, autism spectrum disorder is characterized by difficulties in communication and social interaction, as well as restrictive and repetitive patterns of behavior. Objectives: The aim of this paper is to review the current available literature in order to expand our knowledge about gender identity and dysphoria in the population with autism spectrum disorder. Methods: A qualitative review was conducted over the last 20 years, using the Medline database through PubMed. Combinations of MeSH terms related to gender identity and people with autism spectrum disorder were used, selecting those studies in English, French or Spanish that met the objectives of the review, excluding references in other languages. The scientific evidence obtained was analyzed and synthesized. Results: The development of gender identity of people with autism spectrum disorder can be a complex process. Comparing the general population with the population with autism spectrum disorder, a higher prevalence of gender dysphoria has been evidenced in the population with autism spectrum disorder, and within this group when segmented by gender, greater in women than in men. Conclusions: This review highlights the importance of increasing knowledge about sexuality and gender dysphoria in people with autism spectrum disorder in order to facilitate the development, understanding and acceptance of their gender identity and sexual orientation of these people. Abstract

Objective To evaluate the basal/total ratio of daily insulin dose (b/T) in outpatients with diabetes type 1 (DM1) and type 2 (DM2) on basal-bolus regimen, by investigating whether there is a relationship with HbA1c and episodes of hypoglycemia. Methods Multicentric, observational, cross-sectional study in Italy. Adult DM1 (n = 476) and DM2 (n = 541) outpatients, with eGFR >30 mL/min/1.73 m2, on a basal-bolus regimen for at least six months, were recruited from 31 Italian Diabetes services between March and September 2016. Clinicaltrials.govID: NCT03489031. Results Total daily insulin dose was significantly higher in DM2 patients (52.3 ± 22.5 vs. 46 ± 20.9 U/day), but this difference disappeared when insulin doses were normalized for body weight. The b/T ratio was lower than 0.50 in both groups: 0.46 ± 0.14 in DM1 and 0.43 ± 0.15 in DM2 patients (p = 0.0011). The b/T was significantly higher in the patients taking metformin in both groups, and significantly different according to the type of basal insulin (Degludec, 0.48 in DM1 and 0.44 in DM2; Glargine, 0.44 in DM1 and 0.43 in DM2; Detemir, 0.45 in DM1 and 0.39 in DM2).
