Abstract

We analyze the behavior of a non-Hermitian opened one-dimensional quantum system with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. This system is built by a dimer, with balanced gains and losses described by a parameter $\gamma$. By varying $\gamma$ the system resonances, which are naturally separated, coalesce at the exceptional point (EP). The transmission spectrum is obtained by means of the scattering matrix ($S$ matrix) formalism and we examine the wave functions corresponding to the resonances as a function of $\gamma$. Specifically, we look for the behavior and distribution of the phases of the $S$ matrix before, at and after the EP., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 Appendix

Abstract

We perform a study based on a random-matrix theory simulation for a three-terminal device, consisting of chaotic cavities on each terminal. We analyze the voltage drop along one wire with two chaotic mesoscopic cavities, connected by a perfect conductor, or waveguide, with one open mode. This is done by means of a probe, which also consists of a chaotic cavity that measure the voltage in different configurations. We show that the key transport states, insulating and conducting, of large regular networks of scatterers can be described generically by negative and zero Lyapunov exponents, respectively, of M\"obius maps that relate the scattering matrix of systems with successive sizes. The conductive phase is represented by weakly chaotic attractors that have been linked with anomalous transport and ergodicity breaking. Abstract

We analyze the scattering of elliptically polarized plane waves normally incident at the planar interface between two different materials; we consider two cases: dielectric-dielectric and dielectric-conductor interfaces. The scattering matrix S in both cases is obtained using the boundary conditions and Poynting's theorem. In the dielectric-dielectric case we write S using two different basis, the usual xy and a rotated one. Abstract

We study the effect of left-right symmetry on the distribution of the parametric derivative of the dimensionless conductance T with respect to an external parameter X, dT/dX, of ballistic chaotic cavities with two leads, each supporting N propagating modes. We show that T and dT/dX are uncorrelated for any N. For N=1 we calculate the distribution of dT/dX in the presence and absence of time-reversal invariance. In both cases, it has a logarithmic singularity at zero derivative and algebraic tails with an exponent different from the one of the asymmetric case. We also obtain explicit analytical results for the mean and variance of the distribution of dT/dX for arbitrary N. Abstract

The study investigates the mechanisms underlying the flag-priming effect on ideological positioning and voting behavior. The experiment, conducted in the context of the Italian elections, found that subliminal flag priming led to self-stereotyping, with participants assuming traits associated with the stereotype of the typical Italian citizen. Such self-stereotyping processes, in turn, mediated the effect of the priming on voting and ideological positioning. Specifically, the priming was responsible for a move toward ideological positions closer to the national prototype (which is centrist), both in terms of voting behavior and ideological positioning. Moreover, the effect proved to be moderated by the centrality of political identity for the individual. This finding helps elucidate previous results and holds practical implications for political communication.

Abstract

BackgroundEvidence is urgently needed to support treatment decisions for children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.MethodsWe performed an international observational cohort study of clinical and outcome data regarding suspected MIS-C that had been uploaded by physicians onto a Web-based database. We used inverse-probability weighting and generalized linear models to evaluate intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) as a reference, as compared with IVIG plus glucocorticoids and glucocorticoids alone. There were two primary outcomes: the first was a composite of inotropic support or mechanical ventilation by day 2 or later or death; the second was a reduction in disease severity on an ordinal scale by day 2. Secondary outcomes included treatment escalation and the time until a reduction in organ failure and inflammation.ResultsData were available regarding the course of treatment for 614 children from 32 countries from June 2020 through February 2021; 490 met the World Health Organization criteria for MIS-C. Of the 614 children with suspected MIS-C, 246 received primary treatment with IVIG alone, 208 with IVIG plus glucocorticoids, and 99 with glucocorticoids alone; 22 children received other treatment combinations, including biologic agents, and 39 received no immunomodulatory therapy. Receipt of inotropic or ventilatory support or death occurred in 56 patients who received IVIG plus glucocorticoids (adjusted odds ratio for the comparison with IVIG alone, 0.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.33 to 1.82) and in 17 patients who received glucocorticoids alone (adjusted odds ratio, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.22 to 1.33). The adjusted odds ratios for a reduction in disease severity were similar in the two groups, as compared with IVIG alone (0.90 for IVIG plus glucocorticoids and 0.93 for glucocorticoids alone). The time until a reduction in disease severity was similar in the three groups.ConclusionsWe found no evidence that recovery from MIS-C differed after primary treatment with IVIG alone, IVIG plus glucocorticoids, or glucocorticoids alone, although significant differences may emerge as more data accrue. Abstract

BackgroundBuilding the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance network in Veterinary medicine (EARS-Vet) was proposed to strengthen the European One Health antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance approach.ObjectivesThe objectives were to (i) define the combinations of animal species, production types, age categories, bacterial species, specimens and antimicrobials to be monitored in EARS-Vet and to (ii) determine antimicrobial test panels able to cover most combinations.MethodsThe EARS-Vet scope was defined by consensus between 26 European experts. Decisions were guided by a survey of the combinations that are relevant and feasible to monitor in diseased animals in 13 European countries (bottom-up approach). Experts also considered the One Health approach and the need for EARS-Vet to complement existing European AMR monitoring systems coordinated by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).ResultsEARS-Vet would monitor AMR in six animal species (cattle, swine, chicken (broiler and laying hen), turkey, cat and dog), for 11 bacterial species (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Staphylococcus hyicus, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Streptococcus suis). Relevant antimicrobials for their treatment were selected (e.g. tetracyclines) and complemented with antimicrobials of more specific public health interest (e.g. carbapenems). Three test panels of antimicrobials were proposed covering most EARS-Vet combinations of relevance for veterinary antimicrobial stewardship.ConclusionsWith this scope, EARS-Vet would enable to better address animal health in the strategy to mitigate AMR and better understand the multi-sectoral AMR epidemiology in Europe.

Abstract

The role of endothelin B (ETB) receptor subtypes and mesanglial cells (MCs) on the modulatory role of ET on the production of guanosine 3',5'- cyclic monophosphate (cGMP) were analyzed in isolated glomeruli cells. Administration of ET3 increased cGMP production in isolated rat glomeruli cells which were inhibited by the infusion of Ng-monomethyl-L-arginine and methylene blue in a calcium-dependent manner. Furthermore, inhibition of ET3 activity was induced by the administration of BQ-788 and IRL-1038 in isolated glomeruli cells.
