Abstract

International audience; The paper aims to understand the context and drivers of researchers' decision to submit a manuscript to a predatory journal. Using OMICS as a case study and asking authors for their views, the paper presents their profile, motivations and publishing experiences. The methodology is based on a questionnaire sent by email to all authors of articles published in OMICS (+2200). The authors were asked about 1/ the factors that influenced their decision to submit their article, 2/ their publishing predatory journal. At the same time, it reveals some of the strategies used by OMICS to persuade authors to submit their papers. The findings will help to inform institutional policies that seek to put in place efficient measures to combat predatory publishing.

3. Exploring authors engagement in journals with question able practices: a case study of OMICS.

Abstract

The paper aims to understand the context and drivers of researchers' decision to submit a manuscript to a journal with questionable practices. Using OMICS as a case study and asking authors for their views, the paper presents their profile, motivations and publishing experiences. The methodology is based on a questionnaire sent by e-mail to all authors of articles in journals published by OMICS (+2200). The authors were asked about (a) the factors that influenced their decision to submit their article; (b) their publishing experience with OMICS; (c) their level of satisfaction; and (d) whether or not they would repeat the experience. A total of 86 responses were collected and 18 e-mails were received. The analysis made it possible to add details to the profiles of authors already identified in the literature, but also allowed new and more nuanced profiles. This research extends our knowledge on the phenomenon of predatory publishing from the authors' feedback and provides a better understanding of the socio-economic, psychosocial and geo-political conditions that drive researchers' decisions to submit their work to a possible, potential, or probable predatory journal. At the same time, it reveals some of the strategies used by OMICS to persuade authors to submit their papers. 8. Relatedness of <e1>Staphylococcus aureus</e1> isolates from bovine mammary gland suffering from mastitis in a single herd

Abstract

Mastitis can be caused by a number of bacteria (Philpot & Pankey, 1975), among which Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important, responsible for considerable economic loss to the dairy industry (Jasper et al. 1982). Carrier rates have been studied extensively in dairy herds suffering from mastitis (Davidson, 1961, 1963). Subtyping bacteria is an important epidemiological tool; for example, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns (antibiograms) have been used for typing Staph. aureus in human medicine (Gillespie et al. 1990). Staph. aureus of bovine origin can be divided into several categories by biotyping (Devriese, 1984). Phage typing has proved useful in differentiating mastitis strains (Mackie et al. 1987) and plasmid profiling has been valuable in epidemiological studies of bovine Staph. aureus (Baumgartner et al. 1984). During the last 5 years genomic fingerprinting of Staph. aureus became a powerful tool for epidemiological typing. Numerous techniques for comparison of staphylococcal isolates have been developed and are becoming important in investigations of strain origin, clonal relatedness and epidemiology. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiology of Staph. aureus isolates from mammary glands of cows from a single herd using modern molecular typing techniques, and to assess whether the same strain constantly colonizes the udder or cows are repeatedly infected by different strains. We investigated 26 Staph. aureus isolates obtained from quarter milk samples from 16 cows. These isolates were characterized biochemically, by their antibiotic resistance pattern, by two polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods on the basis of coagulase (Coa) gene and protein A (Spa) gene (X region) polymorphism and by macrorestriction analysis of chromosomal DNA using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).

Abstract

International audience; Automatic detection and classification of pollen species has value for use inside of palynologic allergen studies. Traditional labeling of different pollen species requires an expert biologist to classify particles by sight, and is therefore time-consuming and expensive. Here, an automatic process is developed which segments the particle contour and uses the extracted features for the classification process. We consider shape features, texture features and aperture features and analyze which are useful. The texture features analyzed include: Gabor Filters, Fast Fourier Transform, Local Binary Patterns, Histogram of Oriented Gradients, and Haralick features. We have streamlined the process into one code base, and developed multithreading functionality to decrease the processing time for large datasets.
