Abstract: Background. Invasive Meningococcal Disease is a severe disease mainly affecting infants and young children. Most infections are caused by serogroups A, B, C, W, X, and Y. In the last 10 years, serogroup B has been the main cause of Invasive Meningococcal Disease in Europe. Recent data resulting from an observational study conducted in Italy show a significant reduction in the number of Invasive Meningococcal Disease cases due to Neisseria meningitidis B after the introduction of vaccine 4CMenB. Thus, the Naples Team of Federation of Italian Primary Care Pediatricians and the Public Health Department started an active collaboration focused on vaccination process management (named “Progetto Via”) with the aim of increasing Meningococcal B vaccination coverage. Study design. Source of data is the regional platform “GE.VA.”. Every Primary care Pediatrician uses daily to record vaccination activity. This platform is integrated with data entered by operators of the District/ Vaccination Center. Methods. Time: January 2019 – December 2019. The Federation of Italian Primary Care Pediatricians/ Naples organized a meeting to identify six coordinators. The pediatricians could choose to counsel in their own offices and send children to the vaccination center or to counsel and vaccinate directly in their own clinics. Results. A total of 78 pediatricians took part in the project: 46 did only counseling and 32 did both counseling and vaccination in their medical clinic. Data obtained show an overall average vaccination coverage growth of about 13% in the first 4 months of the survey, and a further growth of about 11% in the following seven months, with a total growth in the entire period of 24%. The pediatricians’ counseling is essential to recover non-compliant subjects, considering both the relationship of trust with the families and the visits already scheduled as an ideal moment for vaccinations’ status check. Conclusions. The project highlights how an effective collaboration between family pediatricians and the Local Health Authority becomes valuable in getting closer to reach the Ministerial goal of 95%. Vaccination coverage increased significantly when family pediatricians supported the activity of vaccine centers in distress in many regional situations. The trust relationship, the hourly availability and the capillary network of family pediatricians’ clinics were key elements for the success of this project and were also recognized by parents. Abstract: Background and aim: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the degree of glycaemic control and the frequency of diabetic complications in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). Methods and results: Questionnaires investigating the organisation of diabetes care centres, individuals’ clinical and metabolic features and pump technology and its management were sent to adult and paediatric diabetes centres that use CSII for treatment in Italy. Information on standard clinical variables, demographic data and acute and chronic diabetic complications was derived from local clinical management systems. The sample consisted of 6623 people with diabetes, which was obtained from 93 centres. Of them, 98.8% had type 1 diabetes mellitus, 57.2% were female, 64% used a conventional insulin pump and 36% used a sensor-augmented insulin pump. The median glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level was 60 mmol/mol (7.6%). The HbA1c target (i.e. <58 mmol/mol for age <18 years and [removed]18 years) was achieved in 43.4% of paediatric and 23% of adult participants. Factors such as advanced pump functions, higher rate of sensor use, pregnancy in the year before the study and longer duration of diabetes were associated with lower HbA1c levels. The most common chronic complications occurring in diabetes were retinopathy, microalbuminuria and hypertension. In the year before the study, 5% of participants reported ≥1 episode of severe hypoglycaemic (SH) episodes (SH) and 2.6% reported ≥1 episode of ketoacidosis. Conclusions: Advanced personal skills and use of sensor-based pump are associated with better metabolic control outcomes in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with CSII. The reduction in SH episodes confirms the positive effect of CSII on hypoglycaemia. Clinical trial registration number: NCT 02620917 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

Abstract: A real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was evaluated for the detection of Botrytis cinerea in grapevine bunch trash, immature berries, and ripening berries. A simple method for the preparation of crude extracts of grape tissue was also developed for on-site LAMP analysis. When tested with 14 other fungal species frequently found in grapevines, the LAMP assay was specific and sensitive to a B. cinerea DNA quantity of 0.1 ng/µL. The sensitivity was further tested using bunch trash samples with B. cinerea colonization levels between 6 and 100% and with bulk-berry samples composed of 4 pathogen-free berries or 4 berries among which 25 to 100% had been inoculated with B. cinerea. The LAMP assay detected the lowest B. cinerea colonization level tested in bunch trash and in immature and mature berries in less than 20 min. In single-berry experiments, LAMP amplified B. cinerea DNA from all artificially inoculated individual immature and mature berries. No amplification occurred in B. cinerea-free material. The real-time LAMP assay has the potential to be used as a rapid on-site diagnostic tool for assessing B. cinerea colonization in bunch trash and B. cinerea latent infections in berries, which represent critical stages for decision-making about disease management.

Abstract: Objectives: The Wellness Self-Management (WSM) is an adaptation and expansion of Illness Management and Recovery (IMR), an internationally recognized best practice. In order to validate the Italian version of WSM our goals included the translation from English to Italian of the WSM workbook and the implementation of an abbreviated WSM program in an Italian day hospital setting. Methods: In a randomized controlled trial 14 patients with a diagnosis of severe mental illness were recruited and randomly assigned to two groups. Seven individuals received an abbreviated version of WSM, while the controls received Treatment as Usual. Groups did not differ for age, education, cognitive functioning and symptomatology. All patients received weekly planned treatment in the day hospital setting. After treatment, group differences on change scores were tested using ANOVA. Results: Compared to controls, at immediate post-intervention, WSM participants reported significant improvement in processing speed, psychopathology, neurocognitive and personal resources and real-life functioning. Conclusions: These results offer promising preliminary evidence that the use of an abbreviated Italian translation of the WSM workbook provides an effective complement to current mental health treatment.

Abstract: Context:The incidence of type 1 diabetes has been increasing over time.Objective:We estimated the genetic and environmental components of type 1 diabetes susceptibility in a twin cohort of recent-onset cases to explore the sources of changing disease epidemiology.Design:We linked the population-based Italian Twin Registry with 14803 type 1 diabetes records from 36 pediatric diabetes care centers throughout Italy, except Sardinia, and identified 173 diabetic twins. Patients were positive for at least one autoantibody to islet cell, glutamate decarboxylase, tyrosine phosphatase, insulin, or zinc transporter 8 and were insulin dependent since their diagnosis. Zygosity was determined by DNA genotyping or by questionnaire.Outcome Measures:We estimated proband-wise concordance, cotwin recurrence risk with Kaplan-Meier method, and genetic and environmental proportions of susceptibility variance by structural equation models.Results:We recruited 104 diabetic twins (53 males) from 88 pairs (34 monozygotic, 54 dizygotic) and one triplet. The mean age at diagnosis was 8.1 yr (range 1.1-20.5 yr), and the median year of diagnosis was 2002. Proband-wise concordances were 45.5 and 16.4% in monozygotic and dizygotic pairs (P = 0.01). Recurrence risks in monozygotic and dizygotic cotwins were 37 and 12% after 10 yr from the proband's diagnosis (P = 0.005). Genetic contribution to type 1 diabetes susceptibility was 40% (95% confidence interval 8-78), and the shared and individual-specific environmental components were 51% (14-77) and 9% (4-19), respectively.Conclusions:In addition to the moderate genetic effects on type 1 diabetes susceptibility, our results draw attention to the substantial shared environmental effects, suggesting that exposures in fetal or early postnatal life may contribute to the increasing incidence of the disease.

34. Cardiometabolic risk profiles and carotid atherosclerosis in individuals with prediabetes identified by fasting glucose, postchallenge glucose, and hemoglobin A1c criteria.

Abstract: Objective: We evaluated whether cardiometabolic risk profiles differ for subjects identified as having prediabetes by A1C, fasting glucose (FPG), or 2-h postchallenge glucose (2-PG) criteria.Research Design and Methods: Atherosclerosis risk factors, oral glucose tolerance test, and ultrasound measurement of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) were analyzed in 780 nondiabetic individuals.Results: Poor agreement existed for A1C and FPG criteria for identification of subjects with prediabetes (κ coefficient = 0.332). No differences in cardiometabolic risk profiles were observed among the three groups of individuals with prediabetes by A1C only, FPG only, and both A1C and FPG. Poor agreement also existed for A1C and 2-PG criteria for identification of individuals with prediabetes (κ coefficient = 0.299). No significant differences in cardiometabolic risk factors were observed between IGT-only and individuals with prediabetes by A1C and 2-PG. Compared with subjects with prediabetes identified by A1C only, IGT-only individuals exhibited a worse cardiometabolic risk profile, with significantly higher systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, 2-h postchallenge insulin, triglycerides, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and carotid IMT, and lower HDL cholesterol levels and insulin sensitivity.Conclusions: These results suggest that considerable discordance between A1C, FPG, and 2-PG exists for the identification of individuals with prediabetes and that the cardiometabolic risk profile of these individuals varies by metabolic parameter, with 2-PG showing the stronger association with cardiometabolic risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis than FPG or A1C. Abstract: Background and aim: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the degree of glycaemic control and the frequency of diabetic complications in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). Methods and results: Questionnaires investigating the organisation of diabetes care centres, individuals’ clinical and metabolic features and pump technology and its management were sent to adult and paediatric diabetes centres that use CSII for treatment in Italy. Information on standard clinical variables, demographic data and acute and chronic diabetic complications was derived from local clinical management systems. The sample consisted of 6623 people with diabetes, which was obtained from 93 centres. Of them, 98.8% had type 1 diabetes mellitus, 57.2% were female, 64% used a conventional insulin pump and 36% used a sensor-augmented insulin pump. The median glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level was 60 mmol/mol (7.6%). The HbA1c target (i.e. 18 years) was achieved in 43.4% of paediatric and 23% of adult participants. Factors such as advanced pump functions, higher rate of sensor use, pregnancy in the year before the study and longer duration of diabetes were associated with lower HbA1c levels. The most common chronic complications occurring in diabetes were retinopathy, microalbuminuria and hypertension. In the year before the study, 5% of participants reported ≥1 episode of severe hypoglycaemic (SH) episodes (SH) and 2.6% reported ≥1 episode of ketoacidosis. Conclusions: Advanced personal skills and use of sensor-based pump are associated with better metabolic control outcomes in Italian people with diabetes who were treated with CSII. The reduction in SH episodes confirms the positive effect of CSII on hypoglycaemia. Clinical trial registration number: NCT 02620917 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

37. A national survey on equine intestinal strongyle infections in Italy and Parasitological Assistance Program in Equids (PAPE)

Abstract: INTRODUCTION. Horses are naturally parasitized by several genus/group of helminths and intestinal strongyles are the most common. Presently three anthelmintic classes are registered in horses: tetrahydropyrimidines, benzimidazoles and macrocyclic lactones (Gokbulut and McKellar, 2018 Vet Parasitol. 261: 27-52). The traditional approach to helminths control is based on interval dose program without a diagnosis, furthermore the frequent and reason less drug use has led to development of anthelmintic resistance (Leathwick et al., 2019 Vet Parasitol. 209: 210-20). Equine deworming scheme for adult horses is based on strongyle Fecal Egg Count (FEC) and on treatment of horses with FEC>200 egg per gram of feces (EPG) (Selective Treatment) (AAEP Internal Parasite Control Guidelines, 2019). FEC is also crucial to evaluate the treatment efficacy. The aims of this work were to carry out a survey on intestinal strongyles in horses in Italy and to propose a veterinary assistance considering a Parasitological Assistance Program in Equids (PAPE) based on coprological diagnosis (FEC). MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study was performed on 7,796 horses bred in 542 Italian farms. Individual FECs were performed using Mini-FLOTAC technique and a Sheather's sugar solution with a specific gravity of 1.250. Individual coprocultures were set up for each horse with FEC>200EPG. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS. Intestinal strongyle eggs were found in 420 (77.5%) tested farms with a prevalence at animal level of 57.6% (4,492/7,796). The average EPG was 441.2±622.0 (min 5 max 7,100). Regarding the egg shedding level, 71.4% of horses had a FEC 500 EPG (high contaminators). Coprocultures revealed L3 of Cyathostominae (100%), Poteriostomum (3.2%), Gyalocephalus (2.1%), Strongylus vulgaris (1.9%), Strongylus edentates (1.1%), Triodontophorus (0.7%) and Oesophagodontus (0.2%). 38. Comparison of three methods for the diagnosis of Oxyuris equi infection in horses

Abstract: Background: Horses are parasitised by several intestinal helminths such as strongyles, ascarids, tapeworms and pinworms. Oxyuris equi, the horse pinworm, causes perineal irritation (tail rubbing, broken hairs and excoriated skin) [1]. Faecal Egg Count is the routine method for the diagnosis of intestinal parasite in equids [2]; however, pinworm eggs are rarely observed in faecal samples because O. equi females deposit eggs in the perianal region [1]. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare three diagnostic techniques namely Mini-FLOTAC, Proudman test and Scotch test for detecting O. equi eggs. Study design: Assay comparison. Methods: Scotch test, Mini-Flotac technique and Proudman test were performed on 2,857 horses to determine technique diagnostic accuracy. Two Scotch tests were performed for each horse and faeces were collected directly from the rectum. The faecal samples were analysed in duplicate using both Mini-FLOTAC and Proudman test with a Sheather's saturated sugar solution. Considering all three methods used, a total of 17,142 assays was performed. Results: Overall, O. equi eggs were found in 125 (4.4%) horses. Of these 91 (72.8%) were positive only by Scotch test; 19 (15.2%) by Scotch test and Mini-Flotac; 5 (4.0%) by Scotch test and Proudman test; 7 (5.6%) only by Mini-Flotac and 3 (2.4%) only by Proudman test. Main limitations: Underestimation of O. equi prevalence due to the egg laying pattern. Conclusions: The number of horses positive for O. equi eggs was higher using the Scotch test, thus showing that it is a more sensitive method for diagnosis of pinworms than FEC and Proudman test.

39. Profile of health-related quality of life outcomes after liver transplantation: univariate effects and multivariate models.

Abstract: Aim. To test the effects of pre- and post-transplant clinical covariates on post-transplant health-related quality of life (HRQOL) score profiles in liver transplant recipients. Material and methods. HRQOL was measured before and after transplantation using the SF-36® Health Survey. Clinical data [diagnosis, model of end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, post-transplant rejection and infection episodes], pre-transplant functional performance (FP), and demographics were collected. Multivariate models for the eight SF-36 scales and two summary components were developed using multiple regression. Discriminant analysis was used to test whether the score profiles differentiated among recipients with and without hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Results. 104 adults reported pre- and post-transplant HRQOL. Time post-transplant averaged 9±8 months (range 1-39). Scores on all SF-36 measures improved from pre- to post-transplant (p<0.001), and 7 of 10 models were significant (p<0.05). After controlling for pre-transplant HRQOL and time post-transplant, HCV infection had a negative effect on the role physical, bodily pain, and role emotional scales. History of a rejection episode had a negative effect on the bodily pain and vitality scales. MELD scores ≥18 had a positive effect on the role physical scale. Pre-transplant FP and post-transplant infection episodes did not affect post-transplant HRQOL. HCV infection had a significant effect on the SF-36 score profile (canonical correlation=0.50; p<0.001). Conclusions. Pre-transplant HCV infection, MELD score, and post-transplant rejection episodes have significant independent effects on HRQOL after liver transplantation. Their specific effects vary among the individual SF-36 scales, and HRQOL score profiles differ among HCV+ and HCV- recipients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Hypo-responsiveness to controlled ovarian stimulation is an undervalued topic in reproductive medicine. This phenomenon manifests as a low follicles output rate (FORT) with a discrepancy between the relatively low number of pre-ovulatory follicles which develop following ovarian stimulation as compared to the number of antral follicles available at the start of stimulation. The pathophysiology mechanisms explaining the ovarian resistance to gonadotropin stimulation are not fully understood, but the fact that both hypo-responders and normal responders share similar phenotypic characteristics suggests a genotype-based mechanism. Indeed, existing evidence supports the association between specific gonadotropin and their receptor polymorphisms and ovarian hypo-response. Apart from genotypic trait, environmental contaminants and oxidative stress might also be involved in the hypo-response pathogenesis. The ratio between the number of oocytes collected at the ovum pick up and the number of antral follicles at the beginning of OS [Follicle to oocyte index (FOI)] is proposed as a novel parameter to assess the hypo-response. Compared with traditional ovarian reserve markers, FOI might reflect most optimally the dynamic nature of follicular growth in response to exogenous gonadotropin. In this review, we contextualize the role of FOI as a parameter to identify this condition, discuss the underlying mechanisms potentially implicated in the pathogenesis of hyporesponse, and appraise possible the treatment strategies to overcome hyper-responsiveness to gonadotropin stimulation.

Abstract: none 28 no BACKGROUND: The study aimed to subtype patients with schizophrenia on the basis of social cognition (SC), and to identify cut-offs that best discriminate among subtypes in 809 out-patients recruited in the context of the Italian Network for Research on Psychoses. METHOD: A two-step cluster analysis of The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT), the Facial Emotion Identification Test and Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test scores was performed. Classification and regression tree analysis was used to identify the cut-offs of variables that best discriminated among clusters. RESULTS: We identified three clusters, characterized by unimpaired (42%), impaired (50.4%) and very impaired (7.5%) SC. Three theory-of-mind domains were more important for the cluster definition as compared with emotion perception and emotional intelligence. Patients more able to understand simple sarcasm (⩾14 for TASIT-SS) were very likely to belong to the unimpaired SC cluster. Abstract: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are psychiatric disorders characterized by abnormal eating behaviors and imbalance of energy homeostasis. Changes of both central and peripheral neuroendocrine substances involved in the modulation of food intake and energy expenditure have been described in acutely ill patients with eating disorders. This review selectively focuses on the most recent findings supporting abnormal changes in the physiology of some peripheral adipokines and gut-secreted peptides, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and endocannabinoids in patients with AN or BN. Literature data do suggest a dysregulation of these neuroendocrine feeding regulators but, at the moment, they do not allow to establish the state or trait-dependent nature of those aberrations. It has been proposed, although not definitively proved, that neuroendocrine alterations, even when secondary to malnutrition and/or to aberrant eating behaviors, might contribute to the genesis and the maintenance of some symptomatic aspects of AN and BN, thus affecting the course and the prognosis of these disorders. Future studies should clarify whether neuroendocrine alterations are part of the genetically transmitted biological vulnerability to eating disorders.

Abstract: The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying binge eating disorder are poorly understood. Evidence exists for the fact that abnormalities in peptides involved in the regulation of appetite, including ghrelin, may play a role in binge eating behavior. Genes involved in the ghrelin physiology may therefore contribute to the biological vulnerability to binge eating disorder.We examined whether two polymorphisms of the ghrelin gene, the G152A (Arg51Gln) and C214A (Leu72Met), were associated with binge eating disorder. Ninety obese or nonobese women with binge eating disorder and 119 normal weight women were genotyped at the ghrelin gene.Statistical analyses showed that the Leu72Met ghrelin gene variant was significantly more frequent in binge eating disorder patients (chi2=5.940; d.f.=1, P=0.01) and was associated with a moderate, but significant risk to develop binge eating disorder (odds ratio=2.725, 95% confidence interval: 1.168-6.350).Although these data should be regarded as preliminary because of the small sample size, they suggest that the Leu72Met ghrelin gene variant may contribute to the genetic susceptibility to binge eating disorder.

Abstract: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are characterised by pathological concerns about body weight (BW) and shape, which usually result in severe food restriction with BW loss in AN and binge-purging behaviours without weight loss in BN. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders Test Revision (DSM-IV TR) includes in the category of eating disorders (EDs) also eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS). EDNOS are represented by partial syndromes not fulfilling all the DSM-IV TR criteria for AN or BN, and by binge-eating disorder (BED), characterised by binge eating without purging or restrictive behaviours, which results in a dramatic BW increase. AN and BN are more prevalent in females than in males, and affect especially adolescents in the age range from 12 to 25 years. The etiopathogenesis of EDs is not known; it is widely believed that both biological, psychological and psychosocial factors contribute to their genesis and/or their maintenance. Among the biological factors, substances involved in the regulation of eating behaviour and energy homeostasis are thought to play a major role, as suggested by both genetic and biochemical studies. From a clinical point of view, AN may lead to severe medical complications, which are threatening for the patient's life; BN is rarely a life frightening condition; in the BED medical complications are similar to those of obesity. Both AN and BN have a high incidence of psychiatric comorbidity, especially affective and anxiety disorders and personality disorders. The treatment of these syndromes requires multiple interventions, which include drugs, psychotherapies, nutritional counselling, psychoeducation and treatment of medical complications. At present, no effective prevention is available.

Abstract: Genetic factors likely contribute to the biological vulnerability to anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). We investigated whether the Arg51Gln and/or the Leu72Met gene polymorphisms of the human ghrelin, a peptide involved in the regulation of eating behavior, were associated to AN and/or BN. Two-hundred-ninety-two Caucasian women (114 with BN, 59 with AN and 119 healthy controls) participated into the study. No significant differences were found in the frequencies of the Arg51Gln and the Leu72Met ghrelin gene variants among patients with AN or BN and healthy controls. Moreover, no significant differences emerged in eating-related phenotypic variables between patients carrying the Leu72Met genotype as compared to those with the Leu72Leu genotype. These results suggest that the Arg51Gln and the Leu72Met polymorphisms of the human ghrelin gene do not contribute to the genetic susceptibility to AN and BN.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE Genes involved in 5HT transmission have been supposed to contribute to the biologic vulnerability for bulimia nervosa (BN). Because a long (L) and a short (S) variant of the promoter region of the 5HT transporter gene have been identified, we tested whether the 5HTT gene-linked polymorphic region (5HTTLPR) could represent a susceptibility factor for BN and/or could be related to nutritional parameters, harm avoidance personality dimension, and psychiatric comorbidity. METHODS A total of 219 white women (125 bulimics and 94 healthy control subjects) underwent a blood sample collection for 5HTTLPR genotyping and a clinical evaluation assessing comorbidity for axis I and II psychiatric disorders, harm avoidance personality dimension, and body composition (only patients). RESULTS The distribution of the 5HTTLPR genotypes did not significantly differ between patients and control subjects, although the L allele was significantly more frequent in the former. Bulimic individuals carrying at least one copy of the S allele had significantly lower mean body mass index and body fat mass values and significantly higher mean harm avoidance score than patients with the LL genotype. No significant association was found between the 5HTTLPR genotype and comorbid axis I and II psychiatric disorders. CONCLUSIONS These findings support the view that polymorphic variants of the 5HTT promoter region do not play a part in predisposing to BN, whereas they seem to predispose bulimic individuals to nutritional impairment and increased harm avoidance.

Abstract: The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is involved not only in promoting neuronal outgrowth and differentiation, synaptic connectivity and neuronal repair, but also in modulating eating behavior. Since genetic factors likely contribute to the biological vulnerability to bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), we investigated whether the functional 196G/A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the BDNF gene was associated to BN and/or BED or to some phenotypic aspects of the disordered eating. Two hundred and ten Caucasian women (126 with BN, 84 with BED and 121 healthy controls) participated into the study. No significant differences were found in the frequencies of the 196G/A variants of the BDNF gene among patients with BN or BED and healthy controls. In both BN and BED groups, subjects carrying the 196A/A genotype exhibited a weekly frequency of bingeing and a severity of binge eating (as assessed by the Bulimia Investigation Test Edinburgh) significantly higher than those with the 196A/G and 196G/G genotypes. These results suggest that the 196G/A SNP of the human BDNF gene does not contribute to the genetic susceptibility to BN and BED, but may predispose those patients to a more severe binge eating behavior.

Abstract: Sir—Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), alone or in combination with different psychotherapies and/or nutritional counselling, have been proved to reduce binge eating and vomiting frequencies in patients with bulimia nervosa (BN). However, percent reductions in bingeing and purging range from 18 to 87%.1 It has been suggested that the initial capacity, affinity or genotype of proteins involved in the regulation of SSRI action could account for differences in treatment outcome.2 The 5-HT transporter (5-HTT) represents the prime target of SSRIs, and a long (L) and a short (S) variant of the promoter region of the 5-HTT gene, with different transcriptional efficiencies, have been identified.3 The S allele of the 5-HTT gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) has been associated with poorer SSRI response in major depression.2, 4, 5, 6, 7
