Le aree di affioramento dei depositi argillosi del Pliocene sono spesso interessate da erosione calanchiva nelle colline dell'Appennino centrale. Solo nel bacino del Fiume Orcia, in Toscana meridionale (provincia di Siena), le argille plioceniche interessano 21000 ha: questo paesaggio prende il nome di Crete Senesi. L’area del territorio comune di Radicofani, nell’alta valle del Fiume Orcia, è formata principalmente dai sedimenti argillosi del Pliocene inferiore (Unità del Fiume Paglia) e i versanti sono diffusamente caratterizzati da instabilità geomorfologica causata da erosione di tipo calanchiva e da movimenti franosi. In quest’area sono stati eseguiti numerosi interventi di rimboschimento negli ultimi cinquanta anni su una superficie complessiva di 320 ha. Per tali interventi sono state scelte conifere frugali come Cupressus arizonica, Cupressus sempervirens, Pinus nigra e pini mediterranei in soprassuoli monospecifici o misti. L’obiettivo del presente studio è di valutare, attraverso un approccio multidisciplinare, l’impatto dei rimboschimenti sull’instabilità geomorfologica di nove bacini di drenaggio con ridotta estensione e appartenenti ai bacini dei fiumi Paglia e Formone. Gli aspetti geologici, geomorfologici, idrologici e vegetazionali sono stati analizzati tramite un confronto diacronico tra la situazione pre – rimboschimento (1954) e quella post – rimboschimento (2007). Il DEM costruito a partire dalla cartografia storica è stato raffrontato con il DEM attuale. La differenza tra i due DEMs ha permesso di calcolare i tassi di erosione e deposizione per ogni bacino. L’aereo – foto interpretazione e l’elaborazione in ambiente GIS hanno consentito di quantificare la variazione nell’estensione delle aree affette da erosione calanchiva, dell’uso del suolo utilizzando la metodologia CORINE Land Cover e dei tassi di erosione mediante la ricostruzione dei reticoli idrografici. Inoltre le aree in frana sono state correlate ai fattori determinanti nella predisposizione al dissesto: pendenza, esposizione, uso del suolo e litologia. Mediante tale correlazione sono stati assegnati pesi ai fattori predisponenti, di modo che si è potuto stabilire quali tra questi abbia maggior influenza sul dissesto e calcolare l’Indice di Franosità. Oltre all’indagine diacronica sono state effettuate diciotto aree di saggio circolari di 10 metri di diametro in popolamenti di circa quaranta anni. Per le cinque diverse tipologie forestali prese in esame sono stati determinati numero di piante, diametro medio, area basimetrica ed altezza media e dominante. Il rilevamento forestale, insieme alla stima della frammentazione dei nuclei di rimboschimento, ha consentito di valutare l’adattabilità delle diverse specie usate nei rimboschimenti a questo substrato prettamente argilloso e affetto da instabilità. Le differenze tra la situazione pre e post rimboschimenti sono consistenti. Si riscontra un aumento delle aree agricole a seminativi e delle aree forestali, mentre diminuiscono le aree degradate con vegetazione scarsa o assente. Parallelamente si assiste a una cospicua diminuzione dei tassi di erosione e delle aree a calanchi. Sebbene la criticità geomorfologica sembri essere stata mitigata, permangono estese zone affette da instabilità, in particolare l’Indice di Franosità mostra mediamente una predisposizione alla franosità maggiore nelle aree di affioramento dell’Unità del Fiume Paglia con pendenza tra 10° e 20° e utilizzate a scopi agricoli. I nuclei di rimboschimento hanno una frammentazione marcata dovuta soprattutto alla scelta dei siti d’impianto. I popolamenti forestali mostrano una copertura soddisfacente nonostante i valori dendrometrici indichino classi di fertilità mediocri e la rinaturalizzazione sia in atto solo in pochi nuclei. Tuttavia manca una correlazione significativa tra i tassi di erosione e la superficie forestale, imputabile alla frammentazione eccessiva dei nuclei, ma anche alla bassa superficie rimboschita all’interno dei bacini in proporzione all’estensione totale. Sembra che la bonifica agraria abbia avuto un peso maggiore nella riduzione dei tassi di erosione in questi substrati argillosi. I risultati di questo studio forniscono un importante strumento per la comprensione della dinamica morfologica di aree calanchive in relazione alla vegetazione forestale e per la pianificazione e la gestione del territorio. The areas consisting of the early Pliocene clayey deposits are often affected by badlands erosion in the central Apennine hills. The Pliocene claystones cover 21000 ha only in the River Orcia basin, southern Tuscany (province of Siena): this landscape is called Crete Senesi. The area of Radicofani, in the upper valley of the River Orcia, is mainly formed by early Pliocene clayey sediments (River Paglia Unit). The slopes are widely affected by geomorphological hazard consisting of very frequent badlands erosion and landslides. Many reforestations were carried out in the last fifty years for a total area of 320 ha in this scenario. Frugal conifers (Cupressus arizonica, Cupressus sempervirens, Pinus nigra and Mediterranean pines) in monospecific or mixed stands were chosen for these works. The goal of our study is to evaluate through a multidisciplinary approach the impact of reforestations on the geomorphological instability of nine small drainage basins belonging to the rivers Paglia and Formone watersheds. The geological, geomorphological, hydrological and vegetational characteristics were analyzed by a diachronic confrontation between the pre – reforestation and post – reforestation situations. Each elaboration has been carried out for the year 1954 (pre - reforestation) and year 2007 (post – reforestation). A DEM from historical cartography was constructed and compared with the actual DEM. The difference between the two DEMs leads to estimate the erosion and deposition annual rates for each drainage basin. The aerial – photo interpretation and the processing in GIS system allowed to quantify the surface change in the areas affected by badlands, land use, adopting the CORINE Land Cover methodology, and the variation of the erosion rates through the reconstruction of the drainage networks. Furthermore, the landslide areas are related to some factors that are determinant in susceptibility to instability: slope, aspect, land use and lithology. This relationship has allowed the allocation of weights for the predisposing factors, in order to determine which among them has more influence on the instability and to calculate the Landslide Index. Beside the diachronic investigation, eighteen circular sample plots of ten meters radius in forty years stands have been carried out. The number of plants, mean diameter, basal area and average height and dominant for the five different forest types analyzed have been determined. The forest survey, along with the evaluation of the fragmentation of reforestation cores, allowed to evaluate the adaptability of different forest species used in this typically clayey substrate. The differences between the pre and post reforestation situations are remarkable. There is an increase of arable land and forest areas, while the degraded areas with little or no vegetation decrease. In parallel there is a significant reduction in the erosion rates and badlands areas. Although the geomorphological hazard seems to have been mitigated, extensive areas affected by instability are still remaining, in particular the Landslide Index shows a strong susceptibility in areas where the River Paglia Unit outcrops, with slopes between 10° and 20° and used for agricultural purposes. The reforestation cores show a consistent fragmentation due mainly to the choice of plantation sites. The forest stands show a satisfactory cover despite dendrometric values indicate poor fertility classes and naturalization is present only in few stands. However there is no significant correlation between erosion rates and forest surface, due to the excessive fragmentation of cores, but also to the low reforested surface in the stream basins as compared to the total extension. The land reclamation seems to have had more weight in reducing erosion rates in these clayey substrates. The results of this study provide an important tool to understand the morphological dynamics of badlands areas in relation to forest vegetation and for planning and land management. The concern about the role of soils in the global carbon budget and the effects of soil organic carbon (SOC) decline on soil quality has been incorporated in international treaties. Initiatives such as ‘4 per 1000 Soils for Food Security and Climate’ or ‘The Farm to Fork’ strategy are being implemented in the context of the Paris Agreement to mitigate climate change. This requires a robust measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system to track that the policy goals are being met. However, difficulties arise when implementing MRV systems, as cost-effective and accurate SOC maps that cover large areas with high spatial and temporal resolution are needed. This PhD thesis assessed the potential of remote sensing to provide a tool for a rapid, repeatable and cost-effective SOC monitoring in croplands. The process of deriving a final soil product is however hindered by the conditions of the soil surface, which needs to be bare, dry and smooth. Therefore, the first objective was to assess the effects of disturbing factors such as soil moisture, crop residues and soil crust on SOC prediction from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Secondly, we tested the potential of the created SOC maps as a tool for detecting areas under conservation agriculture. This resulted in an original work as we have: - Defined a methodology that allows obtaining pure soil pixels from Sentinel-2 imagery in Belgium, and - Used a Sentinel-2 derived SOC map and uncertainty map to evaluate the difference in SOC content of conservation agriculture fields from conventional agriculture fields (SC - Sciences) -- UCL, 2023
