Anatomix and Nanoscopium beamlines are collecting photons generated by two 5.5 mm gap in-vacuum insertion devices installed in a canted straight section. Simultaneous operation of those two beamlines requires particular precautions in terms of alignment of the electron (and photon) beam in the undulators. With the high stored beam current (500 mA), any mis-steering in the upstream undulator could quickly damage the downstream one. Using the classical beam position interlock to guarantee the undulators protection would have constrained too much the operation due to very restrictive position thresholds. Then the machine protection system has been modified to incorporate a new interlock based on the electron beam angle combining two BPM readings. The ERC grant COXINEL aims at demonstrating experimentally Free Electron Laser (FEL) amplification with electrons generated by laser plasma acceleration (LPA). Because of the still limited electron beam performance (especially energy spread and divergence) in view of the FEL requirements, the electron beam transfer line has been specifically designed with adequate diagnostics and strong focusing variable strength permanent magnet quadrupoles, an energy de-mixing chicane and second set of quadrupoles for further dedicated focusing in the FEL interaction region, in a U20 in-vacuum undulator, enabling to operate at 200 nm with a 180 MeV electron beam. Many single-shot recording setups are based on the encoding of the information onto a laser pulse. This concerns in particular electro-optic sampling of bunch shapes, and VUV/X pulse monitors using transient reflectivity. The upgrade of these methods to high repetition rates presents challenging issues, that are due to the limited speed of the recording cameras. Recently [1], we demonstrated that multi-MHz repetition rates can be achieved using a relatively simple upgrade of existing setups, using the so-called "photonic time-stretch" technique. Here we present guidelines for the practical realization in the case of electro-optic sampling. We also present a performance analysis, and compare it to the spectral encoding case. The 2.75 GeV synchrotron light source SOLEIL (France) delivers photons to 27 beamlines and 2 new ones are under construction. The commissioning of the Femtoslicing operation mode involving two beamlines is in progress. The uniform filling pattern is now available to users with a 500 mA stored beam current. The operation of the two canted and long beamlines ANATOMIX and Nanoscopium both using in-vacuum insertion devices (IDs) as a photon source has been raising challenges still under investigation. Upgrades of crucial subsystem equipment like magnet power supplies, storage ring RF input power couplers, and solid state amplifiers are continuing. New user requests for beam stability are under upgrade consideration. Other projects for the storage ring are ongoing such as the design and construction of new insertion devices, new multipole injection kicker, localised small and round photon beam production, as well as R&D on 500 MHz solid-state amplifiers. LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation) aims at investigating compact and advanced Free Electron Laser (FEL). It comprises one one hand a 400 MeV superconducting linac for studies of advanced FEL schemes, high repetition rate operation (10 kHz), multi-FEL lines, and one the other hand a Laser Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) for its qualification by a FEL application, an undulator line enabling advanced seeding and pilot user applications in the 40-4 nm spectral range. Following the CDR completion, different R&D programs were launched, as for instance on FEL pulse duration measurement, high repetition rate electro-optical sampling. The COXINEL ERC Advanced Grant aims at demonstrating LWFA based FEL amplification, thanks to a proper electron beam manipulation, with a test experiment under preparation. The femtoslicing project at SOLEIL is currently under commissioning. It will enable to serve several beamlines with 100 fs FWHM long pulses of soft and hard X-rays with reasonable flux and with a 1 kHz repetition rate. It is based on the interaction of a femtosecond Ti:Sa laser with electrons circulating in the magnetic field of a modulator wiggler, that provides the electron beam energy modulation on the length scale of the laser pulse. The optimization of the interaction is performed using two dedicated diagnostics stations. The first one, operating in the Infra-Red (IR) is installed in the tunnel and allows the adjustment of the temporal, spectral and spatial overlap between the laser and the electron beam. The second one, located in the IR-THz AILES beamline, measures the intensity of the terahertz (THz) radiation emitted by the local dip structure produced in the core electron beam after interaction. This second setup provides refined optimization of the interaction. The 2.75 GeV synchrotron light source SOLEIL delivers photons to 27 beamlines; 2 new ones are under construction together with the FEMTOSLICING project of which commissioning started in January 2014. Five filling patterns are available for the users in Top-up injection mode. The storage ring is running with an upgraded optics less sensitive to insertion device (ID) configurations and giving both better beam lifetime and injection efficiency. The beam position stability remains excellent with a focus on electron vertical beam-size stability for the new very long beamlines. A gating system during Top-up injection improves significantly the quality of the spectrum on an infrared beamline. Several heavy actions of maintenance and upgrades on crucial subsystem equipment are underway. Others accelerator projects are going on such as the design and construction of new IDs, new Multipole Injection Kicker, radiation damage studies as well as R&D on solid-state amplifiers., Proceedings of the 5th Int. LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation) aims at investigating the production of short, intense, coherent pulses in the 40-4 nm spectral range [1]. It comprises two types of accelerators connected to a single Free Electron Laser (FEL) for advanced seeding configurations (seeding with High order Harmonic in Gas, echo). A 400 MeV superconducting Linear Accelerator, adapted for studies of advanced FEL schemes, will enable future upgrade towards high repetition rate and multi-user operation by splitting part of the macropulse to different FEL lines. A 0.4 - 1 GeV Laser Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) [2] will also be qualified by the FEL application. After the Conceptual Design Report, R&D has been launched on different sub components. Following transport theoretical studies of longitudinal and transverse manipulation of a LWFA electron beam enabling to provide theoretical amplification, a test experiment is under preparation., Proceedings of the 5th Int. A collaboration of seven research institutes and an industry has been set up for the ThomX project, a compact Compton Backscattering Source (CBS) based in Orsay – France. After a period of study and definition of the machine performances a complete description of all the systems has been provided. The infrastructures work is started and the main systems are in the call for tender phase. In this paper we will illustrate the definitive machine parameters and components characteristics. We will also update the results of the different ongoing R&D on optical resonators, fast power supplies for the injection kickers and on the electron gun., Proceedings of the 5th Int. Ever since the commissioning times, transverse instabilities, which now have been identified as the so called Fast Beam-Ion Instability (FBII), have existed in the SOLEIL storage ring. Though along with the improvement of the vacuum level with increasing beam dose its relative importance has decreased to a large extent as compared to the classical instabilities due to the coupling impedance, the FBII still exists persistently at high current, making it difficult to attain a stable beam at the final goal of 500 mA. In particular, sudden beam losses are frequently encountered after keeping the beam stable over a certain time with transverse feedback at the final current, which raised a question as to whether the observed phenomena are compatible with the saturating effect of the FBII. Experimental analysis using the bunch by bunch feedback diagnostics as well as theoretical and numerical analysis using multibunch tracking have been carried out to understand the instability quantitatively and to elucidate the mechanism of the beam losses., Proceedings of the 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2010, Kyoto, Japan

In this paper we introduce and discuss the recent developments made in our digital transverse bunch by bunch feedback system at SOLEIL, which is routinely in service since the first user operation in both the high average current and high bunch current modes. The above includes installation of a third chain with a dedicated 4-electrode stripline intended to operate in the horizontal plane, an attempt to sample the BPM signal directly at the RF frequency without down-converting to the baseband following the success at SPring-8, a refined tuning procedure by measuring the feedback damping times as a function of the band frequency, as well as exploration of different digital filters ensuring a larger working range in terms of betatron tunes or a faster response against single bunch instabilities. The achieved performance and results are described. Single-shot recording of pulses is possible with high repetition rates (more than 80 MHz), as was demonstrated in the framework of a PhLAM-SOLEIL collaboration * **. This can be achieved by a relatively simple upgrade of existing setups based on spectral encoding. The strategy consists to encode the sub-picosecond information into the time domain, but at a slower scale (nanoseconds), using dispersion in a long optical fiber. Then the information is recorded by a photodiode connected to an oscilloscope. In this poster, we present guidelines for the practical realization of the electro-optical setup, as well as a performance analysis.
