Abstract: The multi-staged XENON program at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso aims to detect dark matter with two-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers of increasing size and sensitivity. The XENONnT experiment is the latest detector in the program, planned to be an upgrade of its predecessor XENON1T. It features an active target of 5.9 tonnes of cryogenic liquid xenon (8.5 tonnes total mass in cryostat). The experiment is expected to extend the sensitivity to WIMP dark matter by more than an order of magnitude compared to XENON1T, thanks to the larger active mass and the significantly reduced background, improved by novel systems such as a radon removal plant and a neutron veto. Abstract: The series of upgrades to the Large Hadron Collider, culminating in the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider, will enable a significant expansion of the physics program of the CMS experiment. However, the accelerator upgrades will also make the experimental conditions more challenging, with implications for detector operations, triggering, and data analysis. The luminosity of the proton-proton collisions is expected to exceed $2-3\times10^{34}$~cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for Run 3 (starting in 2022), and it will be at least $5\times10^{34}$~cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ when the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider is completed for Run 4. These conditions will affect muon triggering, identification, and measurement, which are critical capabilities of the experiment. To address these challenges, additional muon detectors are being installed in the CMS endcaps, based on Gas Electron Multiplier technology. For this purpose, 161 large triple-Gas Electron Multiplier detectors have been constructed and tested. Installation of these devices began in 2019 with the GE1/1 station and will be followed by two additional stations, GE2/1 and ME0, to be installed in 2023 and 2026, respectively. The assembly and quality control of the GE1/1 detectors were distributed across several production sites around the world. We motivate and discuss the quality control procedures that were developed to standardize the performance of the detectors, and we present the final results of the production. Out of 161 detectors produced, 156 detectors passed all tests, and 144 detectors are now installed in the CMS experiment. The various visual inspections, gas tightness tests, intrinsic noise rate characterizations, and effective gas gain and response uniformity tests allowed the project to achieve this high success rate., Comment: 45 pages, 39 figures, submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A

Abstract: After the Phase-2 high-luminosity upgrade to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the collision rate and therefore the background rate will significantly increase, particularly in the high $\eta$ region. To improve both the tracking and triggering of muons, the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration plans to install triple-layer Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors in the CMS muon endcaps. Demonstrator GEM detectors were installed in CMS during 2017 to gain operational experience and perform a preliminary investigation of detector performance. We present the results of triple-GEM detector performance studies performed in situ during normal CMS and LHC operations in 2018. The distribution of cluster size and the efficiency to reconstruct high $p_T$ muons in proton--proton collisions are presented as well as the measurement of the environmental background rate to produce hits in the GEM detector., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: An estimate of environmental background hit rate on triple-GEM chambers is performed using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and compared to data taken by test chambers installed in the CMS experiment (GE1/1) during Run-2 at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The hit rate is measured using data collected with proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV and a luminosity of 1.5$\times10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The simulation framework uses a combination of the FLUKA and Geant4 packages to obtain the hit rate. FLUKA provides the radiation environment around the GE1/1 chambers, which is comprised of the particle flux with momentum direction and energy spectra ranging from $10^{-11}$ to $10^{4}$ MeV for neutrons, $10^{-3}$ to $10^{4}$ MeV for $\gamma$'s, $10^{-2}$ to $10^{4}$ MeV for $e^{\pm}$, and $10^{-1}$ to $10^{4}$ MeV for charged hadrons. Geant4 provides an estimate of detector response (sensitivity) based on an accurate description of detector geometry, material composition and interaction of particles with the various detector layers. The MC simulated hit rate is estimated as a function of the perpendicular distance from the beam line and agrees with data within the assigned uncertainties of 10-14.5%. Abstract: We present analytical calculations, Finite Element Analysis modeling, and physical measurements of the interstrip capacitances for different potential strip geometries and dimensions of the readout boards for the GE2/1 triple-Gas Electron Multiplier detector in the CMS muon system upgrade. The main goal of the study is to find configurations that minimize the interstrip capacitances and consequently maximize the signal-to-noise ratio for the detector. We find agreement at the 1.5--4.8% level between the two methods of calculations and on the average at the 17% level between calculations and measurements. A configuration with halved strip lengths and doubled strip widths results in a measured 27--29% reduction over the original configuration while leaving the total number of strips unchanged. We have now adopted this design modification for all eight module types of the GE2/1 detector and will produce the final detector with this new strip design., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: We present a novel application of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors in the construction and characterisation of Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD), with particular attention to the realisation of the largest triple (Gas electron Multiplier) GEM chambers so far operated, the GE1/1 chambers of the CMS experiment at LHC. The GE1/1 CMS project consists of 144 GEM chambers of about 0.5 m2 active area each, employing three GEM foils per chamber, to be installed in the forward region of the CMS endcap during the long shutdown of LHC in 2108-2019. The large active area of each GE1/1 chamber consists of GEM foils that are mechanically stretched in order to secure their flatness and the consequent uniform performance of the GE1/1 chamber across its whole active surface. So far FBGs have been used in high energy physics mainly as high precision positioning and re-positioning sensors and as low cost, easy to mount, low space consuming temperature sensors. FBGs are also commonly used for very precise strain measurements in material studies. In this work we present a novel use of FBGs as flatness and mechanical tensioning sensors applied to the wide GEM foils of the GE1/1 chambers. A network of FBG sensors have been used to determine the optimal mechanical tension applied and to characterise the mechanical tension that should be applied to the foils. Abstract: Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology is being considered for the forward muon upgrade of the CMS experiment in Phase 2 of the CERN LHC. Its first implementation is planned for the GE1/1 system in the $1.5 < \mid\eta\mid < 2.2$ region of the muon endcap mainly to control muon level-1 trigger rates after the second long LHC shutdown. A GE1/1 triple-GEM detector is read out by 3,072 radial strips with 455 $\mu$rad pitch arranged in eight $\eta$-sectors. We assembled a full-size GE1/1 prototype of 1m length at Florida Tech and tested it in 20-120 GeV hadron beams at Fermilab using Ar/CO$_{2}$ 70:30 and the RD51 scalable readout system. Four small GEM detectors with 2-D readout and an average measured azimuthal resolution of 36 $\mu$rad provided precise reference tracks. Construction of this largest GEM detector built to-date is described. Strip cluster parameters, detection efficiency, and spatial resolution are studied with position and high voltage scans. The plateau detection efficiency is [97.1 $\pm$ 0.2 (stat)]\%. The azimuthal resolution is found to be [123.5 $\pm$ 1.6 (stat)] $\mu$rad when operating in the center of the efficiency plateau and using full pulse height information. The resolution can be slightly improved by $\sim$ 10 $\mu$rad when correcting for the bias due to discrete readout strips. The CMS upgrade design calls for readout electronics with binary hit output. When strip clusters are formed correspondingly without charge-weighting and with fixed hit thresholds, a position resolution of [136.8 $\pm$ 2.5 stat] $\mu$rad is measured, consistent with the expected resolution of strip-pitch/$\sqrt{12}$ = 131.3 $\mu$rad. Abstract: This paper summarizes the development of a successful project, LAUE, supported by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and devoted to the development of long focal length (up to 100 m) Laue lenses for hard X--/soft gamma--ray astronomy (80-600 keV). The apparatus is ready and the assembling of a prototype lens petal is ongoing. The great achievement of this project is the use of bent crystals. From measurements obtained on single crystals and from simulations, we have estimated the expected Point Spread Function and thus the sensitivity of a lens made of petals. The expected sensitivity is a few $\times10^{-8}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ keV$^{-1}$. Abstract: SND@LHC is a compact and stand-alone experiment designed to perform measurements with neutrinos produced at the LHC in the pseudo-rapidity region of ${7.2 < \eta < 8.4}$. The experiment is located 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point, in the TI18 tunnel. The detector is composed of a hybrid system based on an 830 kg target made of tungsten plates, interleaved with emulsion and electronic trackers, also acting as an electromagnetic calorimeter, and followed by a hadronic calorimeter and a muon identification system. The detector is able to distinguish interactions of all three neutrino flavours, which allows probing the physics of heavy flavour production at the LHC in the very forward region. This region is of particular interest for future circular colliders and for very high energy astrophysical neutrino experiments. The detector is also able to search for the scattering of Feebly Interacting Particles. In its first phase, the detector will operate throughout LHC Run 3 and collect a total of 250 $\text{fb}^{-1}$., Comment: 57 pages. To be published in JINST

Abstract: We present a novel application of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors in the construction and characterisation of Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD), with particular attention to the realisation of the largest triple (Gas electron Multiplier) GEM chambers so far operated, the GE1/1 chambers of the CMS experiment at LHC. The GE1/1 CMS project consists of 144 GEM chambers of about 0.5 m2 active area each, employing three GEM foils per chamber, to be installed in the forward region of the CMS endcap during the long shutdown of LHC in 2108-2019. The large active area of each GE1/1 chamber consists of GEM foils that are mechanically stretched in order to secure their flatness and the consequent uniform performance of the GE1/1 chamber across its whole active surface. So far FBGs have been used in high energy physics mainly as high precision positioning and re-positioning sensors and as low cost, easy to mount, low space consuming temperature sensors. FBGs are also commonly used for very precise strain measurements in material studies. In this work we present a novel use of FBGs as flatness and mechanical tensioning sensors applied to the wide GEM foils of the GE1/1 chambers. A network of FBG sensors have been used to determine the optimal mechanical tension applied and to characterise the mechanical tension that should be applied to the foils. We discuss the results of the test done on a full-sized GE1/1 final prototype, the studies done to fully characterise the GEM material, how this information was used to define a standard assembly procedure and possible future developments.

Abstract: The CMS Collaboration plans to equip the very forward muon system with triple-GEM detectors that can withstand the environment of the High-Luminosity LHC. This project is at the final stages of R&D and moving to production. An unprecedented large area of several 100 m2 are to be instrumented with GEM detectors which will be produced in six different sites around the world. A common construction and quality control procedure is required to ensure the performance of each detector. The quality control steps will include optical inspection, cleaning and baking of all materials and parts used to build the detector, leakage current tests of the GEM foils, high voltage tests, gas leak tests of the chambers and monitoring pressure drop vs. time, gain calibration to know the optimal operation region of the detector, gain uniformity tests, and studying the efficiency, noise and tracking performance of the detectors in a cosmic stand using scintillators.

Abstract: After the Phase-2 high-luminosity upgrade to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the collision rate and therefore the background rate will significantly increase, particularly in the high �� region. To improve both the tracking and triggering of muons, the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration plans to install triple-layer Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors in the CMS muon endcaps. Demonstrator GEM detectors were installed in CMS during 2017 to gain operational experience and perform a preliminary investigation of detector performance. We present the results of triple-GEM detector performance studies performed in situ during normal CMS and LHC operations in 2018. The distribution of cluster size and the efficiency to reconstruct high pT muons in proton-proton collisions are presented as well as the measurement of the environmental background rate to produce hits in the GEM detector.

Abstract: A temperature monitoring system based on fibre Bragg grating (FBG) fibre optic sensors has been developed for the gas electron multiplier (GEM) chambers of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. The monitoring system was tested in prototype chambers undergoing a general test of the various technological solutions adopted for their construction. The test lasted about two years and was conducted with the chambers being installed in the CMS detector and operated during regular experimental running. In this paper, we present test results that address the choice of materials and procedures for the production and installation of the FBG temperature monitoring system in the final GEM chambers.

Abstract: L’obiettivo del paper è quello di dimostrare l’efficacia della risorsa sport non solo nella classica ottica di miglioramento dello stato di benessere fisi- co o di esaltazione della performance dell’atleta, bensì in un’ottica multi-di- mensionale e multi-valoriale. A tal proposito è stato mostrato come lo sport, attraverso una gestione ed- ucativa basata sui valori dell’integrazione, della legalità e della cittadinanza, può contribuire ad uno sviluppo sociale, culturale ed anche economico sostenibile nel lungo periodo. Tale elaborato ha inoltre evidenziato il ruolo che l’educatore sportivo dovrebbe ricoprire in questa gestione performante al fine di valorizzare al massimo la risorsa sport. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the sport re- source not only in the classic perspective of improving the state of physical well-being or of celebration of the athlete’s performance, but rather in a multi-dimensional and multi-valued perspective. In this regard, it was shown how sport, through an educational manage- ment based on the values of integration, legality and citizenship, can con- tribute to sustainable social, cultural and even economic development in the long term. Abstract: Practical activities play an important role in many training fields. In a previous analysis the role of these activities in the universities of the third age has been seen and how this plays a marginal role. In this paper, the role of motor practice in remote or telematic universities will be verified and evaluated through a qualitative analysis. Despite being created with the aim of facilitating the most isolated people, these have advantages and disadvantages. The pros and cons of the third age third age universities and all the classes of competition regarding the practice of sport will be analysed in a comparative way: L-22 Sciences of physical and sports activities, LM 47 organization and management of services for sport and for motor activities, LM 67 Sciences and techniques of preventive and adapted motor activities, LM 68 Sports sciences and techniques. The aim of the research is to provide a critical evaluation concerning the methods of administration of the sports practice and the training activities of these university structures. The results lead to the conclusion that in telematic universities the activities are not adequate for the purpose since in these structures the activities at a practical level are almost completely non-existent; while about the internship activities, if present, it takes place in affiliated facilities without any direct control of the university to which they belong. Since the universities must guarantee a training path adapted to the needs of the students, they must promote an educational plan that is as close as possible to that of the traditional universities.

Abstract: L’obiettivo del presente contributo è l’indi- viduazione di un approccio gestionale del settore sportivo in grado di stimolare uno sviluppo educativo. Nell’accezione di “management sportivo”, spesso, si sofferma l’attenzione esclusiva- mente sull’aspetto economico, tralasciando l’opportunità di implementare le tecniche gestionali anche per il contesto sociale ed educativo. Una performante strategia gestionale è, in- fatti, in grado di sfruttare il grande potenzia- le educativo insito nello sport. Per i suoi principali valori, come ad esempio lo spirito di squadra ed il rispetto delle regole, lo sport ha sempre rappresentato un contesto sociale predisposto a sostenere lo sviluppo educativo. A tal proposito, questo contribu- to propone una metodologia gestionale che supporta questo settore nel perseguimento di tale finalità. The objective of this contribution is the identification of a managerial approach in the sporting sector, capable of stimulating an educational development. In the meaning of “sports management”, of- ten, the attention is exclusively drawn on the economic aspects, omitting the oppor- tunity to apply the management techniques in social and educational contexts. A performing management strategy is, in fact, able to exploit the great educational potential inherent in sports. Due to its key values, such as team spirit and respect for the rules, sports has always represented a social context predisposed to support edu- cational development. In this regard, this contribution proposes a management me- thodology that supports this sector in pur- suing such objective.

Abstract: NA62 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS dedicated to measurements of rare kaon decays. Such measurements, like the branching fraction of the $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \nu \bar\nu$ decay, have the potential to bring significant insights into new physics processes when comparison is made with precise theoretical predictions. For this purpose, innovative techniques have been developed, in particular, in the domain of low-mass tracking devices. Detector construction spanned several years from 2009 to 2014. The collaboration started detector commissioning in 2014 and will collect data until the end of 2018. Abstract: Lo scopo del paper è quello proporre il modello del Diversity Management quale strumento in grado di promuovere una maggiore educazione alla diversità nel contesto scolastico. Tale approccio gestionale consente di perseguire a livello di impresa notevoli benefici e si ipotizza che, attraverso l’applicazione dei suoi principi, possa stimolare l’accettazione e la valorizzazione dei soggetti percepiti “diversi” per questioni razziali, fisiche, religiose, etniche, etc, anche nel sistema scolastico. Se ciò avvenisse, grazie ad un lavoro operato all’origine di questa criticità sociale, si potrebbe sviluppare un cambiamento culturale volto all’integrazione della diversità di notevoli dimensioni, con un conseguente beneficio sociale ed un futuro beneficio economico. The purpose of the paper is to propose the model of Diversity Management as a tool capable to promoting greater diversity education in the school context. This management approach allows you to obtain, at the level of the enterprise, considerable benefits and it is assumed that, through the application of its principles, can stimulate the acceptance and development of the subjects perceived “different” for racial issues, physical, religious, ethnic, etc, also in the school system. If this were to happen, thanks to a work done from the origin of this social criticality, you might develop a huge cultural change aimed at integration of diversity, with a consequent social benefit and a future economic benefit.

Abstract: The paper has the aim to assess the role that the figure of the professional educator is able to perform in a system that handles disability in performant and educational way. This implies the need to insert the educator in a management model capable of developing a new cultural approach aimed to the inclusion and exploitation of disabled people in society. The study leads to the conclusion that recognize themselves in the professional educator, thanks to his baggage multidisciplinary training, the skills appropriate to pursue the education and socio-economic benefit sought through the model of disability management.
