Search

The Perseus cluster is the brightest X-ray cluster in the sky and is known as a cool-core galaxy cluster. Being a very nearby cluster, it has been extensively studied. This has provided a comprehensive view of the physical processes that operate in the intracluster medium (ICM), including feedback from the AGN 3C84 and measurements of ICM turbulence. Additionally, the Perseus cluster contains a central radio mini-halo. This diffuse radio source traces cosmic ray electrons (re-)accelerated in-situ in the ICM. Here we report on LOFAR high-band antenna 120-168 MHz observations of the Perseus cluster that probe a range of four orders of magnitude in angular scales. In our 0.3 arcsec resolution image, we find that the northern extension of the 3C84 lobe consists of several narrow 1.5-3 kpc parallel strands of emission. In addition, we detect steep-spectrum filaments associated with a previous outburst of the central AGN radio emission filling two known X-ray ghost cavities. At 7 arcsec resolution, our images show a complex structured radio mini-halo, with several edges and filaments. At resolutions of 26 arcsec and 80 arcsec, we discover diffuse radio emission with a 1.1 Mpc extent. We classify this emission as a giant radio halo and its properties are distinct from the inner mini-halo. We also detect two diffuse sources at projected cluster centric radii of 0.7 and 1.0 Mpc. Finally, we observe a 0.9 Mpc long trail of radio emission from the cluster member galaxy IC310, connecting it with the giant radio halo. Together with other recent studies of relaxed clusters, our LOFAR observations indicate that cluster-wide radio emission could be (more) common in cool-core clusters. The clusters Abell 2061 and Abell 2067 in the Corona Borealis supercluster have been studied at different radio frequencies and are both known to host diffuse radio emission. The aim of this work is to investigate the radio emission in between them, suggested by low resolution observations. We analyse deep LOFAR HBA observations at 144 MHz to follow up on the possible intercluster filament suggested by previous 1.4 GHz observations. We investigate the radial profiles and the point-to-point surface brightness correlation of the emission in A2061 with radio and Xray observations, to describe the nature of the diffuse emission. We report the detection of diffuse radio emission on 800 kpc scale, more extended than previously known, reaching beyond the radio halo in A2061 towards A2067 and over the separation outside the two clusters R500 radii. We confirm the presence of a radio halo in A2061, while do not find evidence of diffuse emission in A2067. The surface brightness profile from the centre of A2061 shows an excess of emission with respect to the azimuthally averaged radio halo profile and X-ray background. We explore three different dynamical scenario to explain the nature of the diffuse emission. We analyse a trail of emission of 760 kpc between the radio halo and radio relic in A2061. This pre merger system closely resembles the two other cluster pairs where radio bridges connecting the radio halos on Mpc scales have been detected. The diffuse emission extends beyond each cluster R500 radius but in this unique case, the absence of the radio halo in A2067 is likely the reason for the observed 'gap' between the two systems. However, the point-to-point correlation results are challenging to explain. A fraction of galaxy clusters harbor diffuse radio sources known as radio halos. The currently adopted scenario for their formation is based on second-order Fermi re-acceleration of seed electrons that is driven by merger-driven turbulence in the intra-cluster medium. This mechanism is expected to be inefficient, which implies that a significant fraction of halos should have very steep ($\alpha < -1.5$) energy spectra. We start investigating the potential and current limitations of the combination of the two surveys conducted by LOFAR, LoTSS (144 MHz) and LoLSS (54 MHz), to probe the origin of radio halos. We follow up the 20 radio halos detected in the DR1 of LoTSS, which covers the HETDEX field, with the LoLSS survey, and we study their spectral properties between 54 and 144 MHz. After the removal of compact sources, 9 halos were excluded due to unreliable halo flux density measurements at 54 MHz. Our main finding is that 7 out of 11 ($\sim$ 64%) exhibit an ultra-steep spectrum ($\alpha < -1.5$), which is a key prediction of turbulent re-acceleration models. We also note a tentative trend for more massive systems to host flatter halos, although the currently poor statistics does not allow for a deeper analysis. Our sample suffers from low angular resolution at 54 MHz, which limits the accuracy of the compact-sources subtraction. Nevertheless, this study is the first step towards providing compelling evidence for the existence of a large fraction of radio halos with very steep spectrum, which is a fundamental prediction of turbulent re-acceleration models. In this regard, the forthcoming second data release of LoLSS, along with the integration of LOFAR international stations and the instrumental upgrade to LOFAR2.0, will improve both the statistics and the low-frequency angular resolution, allowing to conclusively determine the origin of radio halos in galaxy clusters., Comment: A&A Letter; 11 pages, 12 figures

Recent low-frequency radio observations at 140 MHz discovered a 3 Mpc-long bridge of diffuse emission connecting the galaxy clusters Abell 0399 and Abell 0401. We present follow-up observations at 60 MHz to constrain the spectral index of the bridge, which so far has only been detected at 140 and 144 MHz. We analysed deep (~18 hours) LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Low Band Antenna (LBA) data at 60 MHz to detect the bridge at very low frequencies. We then conducted a multi-frequency study with LOFAR HBA data at 144 MHz and uGMRT data at 400 MHz. Assuming second-order Fermi mechanisms for the re-acceleration of relativistic electrons driven by turbulence in the radio bridge regions, we compare the observed radio spectrum with theoretical synchrotron models. The bridge is detected in the 75'' resolution LOFAR image at 60 MHz and its emission fully connects the region between the two galaxy clusters. Between 60 MHz and 144 MHz we found an integrated spectral index value of -1.44 +\- 0.16 for the bridge emission. For the first time, we produced spectral index and related uncertainties maps for a radio bridge. We produce a radio spectrum, which show significant steepening between 144 and 400 MHz. This detection at low frequencies provides important information on the models of particle acceleration and magnetic field structure on very extended scales. The spectral index gives important clues to the origin of inter-cluster diffuse emission. Radio observations of a few cool-core galaxy clusters have revealed the presence of diffuse emission on cluster scales, similar to what was found in merging clusters in the form of radio halos. These sources might suggest that a minor merger, while not sufficiently energetic to disrupt the cool core, could still trigger particle acceleration in the intracluster medium on scales of hundreds of kpc. We observed with LOFAR at 144 MHz a sample of twelve cool-core galaxy clusters presenting some level of dynamical disturbances, according to X-ray data. We also performed a systematic search of cold fronts in these clusters, re-analysing archival Chandra data. The clusters PSZ1G139.61+24, A1068 (new detection), MS 1455.0+2232, and RX J1720.1+2638 present diffuse radio emission on a cluster scale. This emission is characterised by a double component: a central mini-halo confined by cold fronts and diffuse emission on larger scales, whose radio power at 144 MHz is comparable to that of radio halos detected in merging systems. The cold fronts in A1068 are a new detection. We also found a candidate plasma depletion layer in this cluster. No sloshing features are found in the other eight clusters. Two of them present a mini-halo, with diffuse radio emission confined to the cluster core. We also found a new candidate mini-halo. Whereas, for the remaining five clusters, we did not detect halo-like emission. For clusters without cluster-scale halos, we derived upper limits to the radio halo power. We found that cluster-scale diffuse radio emission is not present in all cool-core clusters when observed at a low frequency, but it is correlated to the presence of cold fronts. This morphology requires a specific configuration of the merger and so it puts some constraints on the turbulence, which deserves to be investigated in the future with theoretical works., Comment: 34 pages, 30 figures. The connection between the thermal and non-thermal properties in galaxy clusters hosting radio halos seems fairly well established. However, a comprehensive analysis of such a connection has been made only for integrated quantities (e.g. $L_X - P_{radio}$ relation). In recent years new-generation radio telescopes have enabled the unprecedented possibility to study the non-thermal properties of galaxy clusters on a spatially resolved basis. Here, we perform a pilot study to investigate the mentioned properties on five targets, by combining X-ray data from the CHEX-MATE project with the second data release from the LOFAR Two meter Sky survey. We find a strong correlation ($r_s \sim 0.7$) with a slope less than unity between the radio and X-ray surface brightness. We also report differences in the spatially resolved properties of the radio emission in clusters which show different levels of dynamical disturbance. In particular, less perturbed clusters (according to X-ray parameters) show peaked radio profiles in the centre, with a flattening in the outer regions, while the three dynamically disturbed clusters have steeper profiles in the outer regions. We fit a model to the radio emission in the context of turbulent re-acceleration with a constant ratio between thermal and non-thermal particles energy density and a magnetic field profile linked to the thermal gas density as $B(r) \propto n_{th}^{0.5}$. Low-frequency radio observations show an increasing number of radio galaxies located in galaxy clusters that display peculiar morphologies and spectral profiles. This is the result of the dynamical interaction of the galaxy with the surrounding medium. Studying this phenomenon is key to understanding the evolution of low-energy relativistic particles in the intracluster medium. We present a multi-frequency study of the three head-tail (HT) radio galaxies and the radio halo in the galaxy cluster ZwCl0634.1+4747. We make use of observations at four frequencies performed with LOFAR LBA (53 MHz), HBA (144 MHz), GMRT (323 MHz) and VLA (1518 MHz) data. The use of extremely low radio frequency observations, such as LOFAR at 53 and 144 MHz, allowed us to detect the extension of the tails up to a distance of ~ 1 Mpc. We extracted spectral profiles along the tails in order to identify possible departures from a pure ageing model, such as the Jaffe-Perola (JP) model, which only involves synchrotron and inverse-Compton losses. We found clear evidence of departures from this simple ageing model, such as surface brightness enhancement and spectral flattening along all of the tails. This can be interpreted as the consequence of particle re-acceleration along the tails. Possible explanations for this behaviour include the interaction between a shock and the radio tails or a turbulence-driven re-acceleration mechanism. We show that the latter scenario is able to reproduce the characteristic features that we observed in our profiles.

In this work, we investigated the interplay between the X-ray and radio emission of the cluster PSZ2G113.91-37.01 (z = 0.371) using the high-quality XMM-Newton observations of the CHEX-MATE project, and the images of the LoTSS-DR2. The cluster is undergoing a merger along the north-south axis, and shows a central radio halo and two radio relics, one in the southern and one in the northern regions. The analysis of the intracluster medium distribution revealed the presence of a northern surface brightness jump associated to the merger event. By extracting spectra across this discontinuity, we classified the edge as a cold front. Furthermore, we made use of upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations that allowed us to perform a spectral analysis of the G113 radio emission. We found evidence of re-acceleration of particles in the northern relic, and we measured an associated Mach number of M = 1.95 $\pm$ 0.01, as inferred from radio observations. We then performed a point-to-point analysis of the X-ray and radio emission both in the halo and in the northern relic regions. We found a strong correlation for the halo and an anti-correlation for the relic. The former behaviour is in agreement with previous studies. The relic anti-correlation is likely related to the reverse radial distribution of the X-ray (increasing towards the cluster centre) and radio (decreasing towards the cluster centre) emissions. Finally, we performed a point-to-point analysis of the radio emission and the residuals obtained by subtracting a double beta model to the X-ray emission. We found a strong correlation between the two quantities. This behaviour suggests the presence of a connection between the process responsible for the radio emission and the one that leaves fluctuations in the X-ray observations., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. Turbulence introduced into the intra-cluster medium (ICM) through cluster merger events transfers energy to non-thermal components, and can trigger the formation of diffuse synchrotron radio sources. Typical diffuse sources in the forms of giant radio halos and mini-halos are found in merging and relaxed cool core galaxy clusters, respectively. On the other hand, recent observations have revealed an increasing complexity of the non-thermal phenomenology. Abell 2142 (A2142) is a mildly disturbed cluster that exhibits uncommon thermal and non-thermal properties. It is known to host a hybrid halo consisting of two components (H1 and H2), namely a mini-halo-like and an enigmatic elongated radio halo-like structure. We aim to investigate the properties, origin, and connections of each component. We present deep LOFAR observations of A2142 in the frequency ranges $30-78$ MHz and $120-168$ MHz. With complementary multi-frequency radio and X-ray data, we analyse the radio spectral properties of the halo and assess the connection between the non-thermal and thermal components of the ICM. We detected a third radio component (H3), which extends over the cluster volume on scales $\sim 2$ Mpc, embeds H1 and H2, and has a morphology that roughly follows the thermal ICM distribution. The radio spectral index is moderately steep in H1 ($\alpha=1.09\pm 0.02$) and H2 ($\alpha=1.15\pm 0.02$), but is steeper ($\alpha=1.57\pm 0.20$) in H3. The analysis of the thermal and non-thermal properties allowed us to discuss possible formation scenarios for each radio component. Turbulence from sloshing motions of low-entropy gas on different scales may be responsible for the origin of H1 and H2. Many relaxed cool-core clusters host diffuse radio emission on scales of hundreds of kiloparsecs: mini-haloes. However, the mechanism responsible for generating them, as well as their connection with central active galactic nuclei, is elusive and many questions related to their physical properties and origins remain unanswered. This paper presents new radio observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1413 performed with MeerKAT (L-band; 872 to 1712 MHz) and LOFAR HBA (120 to 168 MHz) as part of a statistical and homogeneous census of mini-haloes. Abell 1413 is unique among mini-halo clusters as it is a moderately-disturbed non-cool-core cluster. Our study reveals an asymmetric mini-halo up to 584 kpc in size at 1283 MHz, twice as large as first reported at similar frequencies. The spectral index is flatter than previously reported, with an integrated value of $\alpha = -1.01 \pm 0.06$, shows significant spatial variation, and a tentative radial steepening. We studied the point-to-point X-ray/radio surface brightness correlation to investigate the thermal/non-thermal connection: our results show a strong connection between these components, with a super-linear slope of $b = 1.63 \pm 0.10$ at 1283 MHz and $b = 1.20 \pm 0.12$ at 145 MHz. We also explore the X-ray surface brightness/radio spectral index correlation, finding a slope of $b = 0.59 \pm 0.11$. Both investigations support the evidence of spectral steepening. Finally, in the context of understanding the particle acceleration mechanism, we present a simple theoretical model which demonstrates that hybrid scenarios - secondary electrons (re-)accelerated by turbulence - reproduce a super-linear correlation slope., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. Many galaxy clusters show diffuse cluster-scale emission in the form of radio halos, showing that magnetic fields and relativistic electrons are mixed in with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). There is general agreement that the origin of radio halos is connected to turbulence, generated during cluster mergers. Statistical studies of large samples of galaxy clusters in the radio band have the potential to unveil the connection between the properties of radio halos and the mass and dynamics of the host clusters. Previous studies have been limited to massive clusters and based on a small number of radio halos. The aim of this paper is to investigate the scaling relation between the radio power of radio halos and the mass of the host clusters at low frequencies and down to lower cluster masses. We analysed the clusters from the second catalogue of Planck Sunyaev Zel'dovich sources that lie within the 5634 sq deg covered by the second Data Release of the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey. We derived the correlation between the radio power and the mass of the host clusters and we investigated the distribution of clusters without radio halos with respect to the correlation. We use X-ray observations to classify the dynamical state of clusters and investigate its role on the power of radio halos. We found a correlation between the power of radio halos at 150 MHz and the mass of the host clusters down to 3e14 Msun. This correlation has a large scatter, part of which can be attributed to the different dynamical states of host clusters. We used two statistical test to show that the distribution of clusters with and without (upper limits) radio halos in the mass-radio power diagram is not compatible with a single correlation and that it is also not compatible with clusters being uniformly distributed below an upper envelope constituted by the correlation., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted to A&A

We present the peculiar case of PSZ2G091.83+26.11 at z=0.822. This cluster hosts a Mpc-scale radio halo and an elongated radio source, whose location with the respect to the intracluster medium (ICM) distribution and to the cluster centre is not consistent with a simple merger scenario. We use VLA data at 1-4 GHz to investigate the spectral and polarisation properties of the diffuse radio emission. We combine them with previously published data from LOFAR n the 120-168 MHz band, and from the uGMRT at 250-500 and 550-900 MHz. We also complement the radio data with Chandra X-ray observations to compare the thermal and non-thermal emission of the cluster. The elongated radio emission is visible up to 3.0 GHz and has an integrated spectral index of $-1.24\pm0.03$, with a steepening from $-0.89\pm0.03$ to $-1.39\pm0.03$. These values correspond to Mach numbers $\mathcal{M}_{\rm radio,int}=3.0\pm0.19$ and $\mathcal{M}_{\rm radio,inj}=2.48\pm0.15$. Chandra data reveals a surface brightness discontinuity at the location of the radio source, with a compression factor of $\mathcal{C}=2.22^{+0.39}_{-0.30}$ (i.e. $\mathcal{M}_{\rm Xray}=1.93^{+0.42}_{-0.32}$). We also find that the source is polarised at GHz frequencies. We estimate an intrinsic polarisation fraction of $\sim0.2$, a Rotation Measure of $\sim50~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$ (including the Galactic contribution) and an external depolarisation of $\sim60~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$. The $B$-vectors are aligned with the major axis of the source, suggesting magnetic field compression. Hence, we classify this source as a radio relic. We also find a linear/super-linear correlation between the non-thermal and thermal emission. We propose an off-axis merger and/or multiple merger events to explain the position and orientation of the relic. The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is the only existing radio interferometer able to observe at ultra-low frequencies (<100 MHz) with high resolution (<15") and high sensitivity (<1 mJy/beam). To exploit these capabilities, the LOFAR Surveys Key Science Project is using the LOFAR Low Band Antenna (LBA) to carry out a sensitive wide-area survey at 41-66 MHz named the LOFAR LBA Sky Survey (LoLSS). LoLSS is covering the whole northern sky above declination 24 deg with a resolution of 15" and a sensitivity of 1-2 mJy/beam (1 sigma) depending on declination, field properties, and observing conditions. Here we present the first data release. An automated pipeline was used to reduce the 95 fields included in this data release. The data reduction procedures developed for this project have general application and are currently being used to process LOFAR LBA interferometric observations. Compared to the preliminary release, direction-dependent errors have been corrected for during the calibration process. This results in a typical sensitivity of 1.55 mJy/beam at the target resolution of 15". The first data release of the LOFAR LBA Sky Survey covers 650 sqdeg in the HETDEX spring field. The resultant data products released to the community include mosaic images (I and V Stokes) of the region, and a catalogue of 42463 detected sources and related Gaussian components used to describe sources' morphologies. Separate catalogues for 6 in-band frequencies are also released. The first data release of LoLSS shows that, despite the influences of the ionosphere, LOFAR can conduct large-scale surveys in the frequency window 42-66 MHz with unprecedentedly high sensitivity and resolution. Extended radio sources in the sky require a dense sampling of short baselines to be properly imaged by interferometers. This problem arises in many areas of radio astronomy, such as in the study of galaxy clusters, which may host Mpc-scale diffuse synchrotron sources in the form of radio halos. In clusters where no radio halos are detected, owing to intrinsic absence of emission or extrinsic (instrumental and/or observational) effects, it is possible to determine upper limits. We consider a sample of Planck galaxy clusters from the Second Data Release of the LOFAR Two Meter Sky Survey (LoTSS-DR2) where no radio halos are detected. We use this sample to test the capabilities of LOFAR to recover diffuse extended emission and derive upper limits. Through the injection technique, we simulate radio halos with various surface brightness profiles. We then predict the corresponding visibilities and image them along with the real visibilities. This method allows us to test the fraction of flux density losses owing to inadequate uv-coverage and obtain thresholds at which the mock emission becomes undetectable by visual inspection. The dense uv-coverage of LOFAR at short spacings allows to recover $\gtrsim90\%$ of the flux density of targets with sizes up to $\sim 15'$. We find a relation that provides upper limits based on the image noise and extent (in terms of number of beams) of the mock halo. This relation can be safely adopted to obtain upper limits without injecting when artifacts introduced by the subtraction of the discrete sources are negligible in the central region of the cluster. Otherwise, the injection process and visual inspection of the images are necessary to determine more reliable limits. Diffuse cluster-scale synchrotron radio emission is discovered in an increasing number of galaxy clusters in the form of radio halos (RHs), probing the presence of relativistic electrons and magnetic fields in the intra-cluster medium. The favoured scenario to explain their origin is that they trace turbulent regions generated during cluster mergers where particles are re-accelerated. In this framework, RHs are expected to probe cluster dynamics and are predicted to be more frequent in massive systems. Statistical studies are important to study the connection of RHs with cluster dynamics and to constrain theoretical models. Furthermore, low-frequency surveys can shed light on the existence of RHs with very steep radio-spectra, a key prediction of turbulent models. We study the properties of RHs from clusters of the second catalog of Planck Sunyaev Zel'dovich detected sources that lie within the 5634 deg^2 covered by the second Data Release (DR2) of the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey. We find that the number of observed RHs, their radio flux density and redshift distributions are in line with what is expected in the framework of the re-acceleration scenario. In addition, the fraction of clusters with RHs increases with the cluster mass, confirming the leading role of the gravitational process of cluster formation in the generation of RHs. These models predict a large fraction of RHs with very steep spectrum in the DR2 Planck sample, this will be tested in future studies, yet a comparison of the occurrence of halos in GMRT and LOFAR samples indeed shows a larger occurrence of RHs at lower frequencies suggesting the presence of a number of very steep spectrum RH that is preferentially detected by LOFAR. Using morphological information we confirm that RHs are preferentially located in merging systems and that the fraction of newly LOFAR discovered RHs is larger in less disturbed systems., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Context. It is well-established that shock waves in the intracluster medium launched by galaxy cluster mergers can produce synchrotron emission, which is visible to us at radio frequencies as radio relics. However, the particle acceleration mechanism producing these relics is still not fully understood. It is also unclear how relics relate to radio halos, which trace merger-induced turbulence in the intracluster medium. Aims. We aim to perform the first statistical analysis of radio relics in a mass-selected sample of galaxy clusters, using homogeneous observations. Methods. We analysed all relics observed by the Low Frequency Array Two Metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2) at 144 MHz, hosted by galaxy clusters in the second Planck catalogue of SZ sources (PSZ2). We measured and compared the relic properties in a uniform, unbiased way. In particular, we developed a method to describe the characteristic downstream width in a statistical manner. Additionally, we searched for differences between radio relic-hosting clusters with and without radio halos. Results. We find that, in our sample, $\sim$ 10% of galaxy clusters host at least one radio relic. We confirm previous findings, at higher frequencies, of a correlation between the relic-cluster centre distance and the longest linear size, as well as the radio relic power and cluster mass. However, our findings suggest that we are still missing a population of low-power relics. We also find that relics are wider than theoretically expected, even with optimistic downstream conditions. The hot plasma within merging galaxy clusters is predicted to be filled with shocks and turbulence that may convert part of their kinetic energy into relativistic electrons and magnetic fields generating synchrotron radiation. Analyzing Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 2255, we show evidence of radio synchrotron emission distributed over very large scales of at least 5 megaparsec. The pervasive radio emission witnesses that shocks and turbulence efficiently transfer kinetic energy into relativistic particles and magnetic fields in a region that extends up to the cluster outskirts. The strength of the emission requires a magnetic field energy density at least 100 times higher than expected from a simple compression of primordial fields, presumably implying that dynamo operates efficiently also in the cluster periphery. The footprint of LoTSS-DR2 covers 309 PSZ2 galaxy clusters, 83 of which host a radio halo and 26 host a radio relic(s). It provides us an excellent opportunity to statistically study the properties of extended cluster radio sources, especially their connection with merging activities. We aim to quantify cluster dynamic states to investigate their relation with the occurrence of extended radio sources. We also search for connections between intracluster medium (ICM) turbulence and nonthermal characteristics of radio halos in the LoTSS-DR2. We analyzed XMM-Newton and Chandra archival X-ray data and computed concentration parameters and centroid shifts that indicate the dynamic states of the clusters. We also performed a power spectral analysis of the X-ray surface brightness (SB) fluctuations to investigate large-scale density perturbations and estimate the turbulent velocity dispersion. The power spectral analysis results in a large scatter density fluctuation amplitude. We therefore only found a marginal anticorrelation between density fluctuations and cluster relaxation state, and we did not find a correlation between density fluctuations and radio halo power. Nevertheless, the injected power for particle acceleration calculated from turbulent dissipation is correlated with the radio halo power, where the best-fit unity slope supports the turbulent (re)acceleration scenario. Two different acceleration models, transit-time damping and adiabatic stochastic acceleration, cannot be distinguished due to the large scatter of the estimated turbulent Mach number. We introduced a new quantity $[kT\cdot Y_X]_{r_\mathrm{RH}}$, which is proportional to the turbulent acceleration power assuming a constant Mach number. We examine the particle acceleration mechanism in the Mpc-scale bridge between Abell 399 and Abell 401 and assess in particular if the synchrotron emission originates from first-order or second-order Fermi re-acceleration. We use deep (~40 hours) LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations from Abell 399 and Abell 401 and apply improved direction-dependent calibration to produce deep radio images at three different resolutions at 144 MHz. With a point-to-point analysis we find in the bridge trends between the radio emission from our new maps and X-ray emission from an XMM Newton observation. By analyzing our observations and results, we argue that second-order Fermi re-acceleration is currently the most favoured process to explain the emission from the radio bridge, where past AGN activity may be responsible for the supply of fossil plasma needed for in-situ re-acceleration. The radio halos from Abell 401 and Abell 399 are also consistent with a second-order Fermi re-acceleration model.

The central regions of galaxy clusters are permeated by magnetic fields and filled with relativistic electrons. When clusters merge, the magnetic fields are amplified and relativistic electrons are re-accelerated by turbulence in the intra cluster medium. These electrons reach energies of 1 -- 10 GeV and, in the presence of magnetic fields, produce diffuse radio halos that typically cover an area of ~1 square Mpc. Here we report observations of four clusters whose radio halos are embedded in much more extended, diffuse radio emission, filling a volume 30 times larger than that of radio halos. The emissivity in these larger features is about 20 times lower than the emissivity in radio halos. We conclude that relativistic electrons and magnetic fields extend far beyond radio halos, and that the physical conditions in the outer regions of the clusters are quite different from those in the radio halos., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, Nature in press

We present the first detailed analysis of the radio halo in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2256 using the LOFAR, uGMRT, and VLA. These observations combined with archival X-ray data allowed us to study the halo emission with unprecedented detail. The integrated radio emission from the entire halo is characterized by an ultra-steep spectrum, which can be described by a power law with $\alpha_{144 \rm MHz}^{1.5 \rm GHz}=-1.63\pm0.03$, and a radial steepening in the outer regions. The halo is significantly underluminous according to the scaling relations between radio power and mass at 1.4 GHz but not at 150 MHz; ultra-steep spectrum halos are predicted to be statistically underluminous. Despite the complex structure of this system, the radio halo morphology is remarkably similar to that of the X-ray emission. The radio surface brightness distribution across the halo is strongly correlated with the X-ray brightness of the intracluster medium. The derived correlations show sublinear slopes and there are distinct structures: the core is $\rm I_{R}\propto I_{X}^{1.51}$, the outermost region $\rm I_{R}\propto I_{X}^{0.41}$, and we find radio morphological connections with X-ray discontinuities. We also find a strong anti-correlation between the radio spectral index and the X-ray surface brightness, implying radial steepening. We suggests that the halo core is either related to old plasma from previous AGN activity, being advected, compressed and re-accelerated by mechanisms activated by the cold front or less turbulent with strong magnetic field in the core. The change in the radio vs X-ray correlation slopes in the outer regions of the halo could be due to a radial decline of magnetic field, increase in the number density of seed particles or increasing turbulence. Abell 1033 is a merging galaxy cluster of moderate mass ($M_{500}=3.2\times10^{14} \mathrm{M}_\odot$). It hosts a broad variety of diffuse radio sources linked to different astrophysical phenomena. The most peculiar one is an elongated feature with an ultra-steep spectrum that is the prototype of the category of gently reenergized tails (GReET). Furthermore, the cluster hosts sources that were previously classified as a radio phoenix and a radio halo. We aim to improve the understanding of the cosmic-ray acceleration mechanisms in galaxy clusters in a frequency and mass range that has been poorly explored so far. To investigate the ultra-steep synchrotron emission in the cluster, we performed a full calibration of a LOFAR observation centered at 54 MHz. We analyzed this observation together with re-calibrated data of LoTSS at 144 MHz and an archival GMRT observation at 323 MHz. We performed a spectral study of the radio galaxy tail connected to the GReET to test if the current interpretation of the source is in agreement with observational evidence below 100 MHz. Additionally, we studied the radio halo at different frequencies. We report an extreme spectral curvature for the GReET, the spectral index flattens from $\alpha_{144}^{323} = -4$ to $\alpha_{54}^{144} = -2$. This indicates the presence of a cut-off in the electron energy spectrum. At the cluster center, we detect the radio halo at 54, 144 and at lower significance at 323 MHz. We categorize it as an ultra-steep spectrum radio halo with a spectral index $\alpha = -1.65 \pm 0.17$. Additionally, it is found to be significantly above the radio power-to-cluster mass correlations reported in the literature. Furthermore, the synchrotron spectrum of the halo is found to further steepen between 144 and 323 MHz, in agreement with the presence of a break in the electron spectrum, which is a prediction of homogeneous re-acceleration models., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The presence of large-scale magnetic fields and ultra-relativistic electrons in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is confirmed through the detection of diffuse radio synchrotron sources, so-called radio halos and relics. Due to their steep-spectrum nature, these sources are rarely detected at frequencies above a few GHz, especially in low-mass systems. The aim of this study is to discover and characterise diffuse radio sources in low-mass galaxy clusters in order to understand their origin and their scaling with host cluster properties. We searched for cluster-scale radio emission from low-mass galaxy clusters in the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey - Data Release 2 (LoTSS-DR2) fields. We made use of existing optical (Abell, DESI, WHL) and X-ray (comPRASS, MCXC) catalogues. The LoTSS-DR2 data were processed further to improve the quality of the images that are used to detect and characterize diffuse sources. We have detected diffuse radio emission in 28 galaxy clusters. The number of confirmed (candidates) halos and relics are six (seven) and 10 (three), respectively. Among these, 11 halos and 10 relics, including candidates, are newly discovered by LOFAR. Beside these, five diffuse sources are detected in tailed radio galaxies and are probably associated with mergers during the formation of the host clusters. We are unable to classify other 13 diffuse sources. We compare our newly detected, diffuse sources to known sources by placing them on the scaling relation between the radio power and the mass of the host clusters.

We present LOw Frequency ARray observations of the Coma cluster field at 144\,MHz. The cluster hosts one of the most famous radio halos, a relic, and a low surface-brightness bridge. We detect new features that allow us to make a step forward in the understanding of particle acceleration in clusters. The radio halo extends for more than 2 Mpc, which is the largest extent ever reported. To the North-East of the cluster, beyond the Coma virial radius, we discover an arc-like radio source that could trace particles accelerated by an accretion shock. To the West of the halo, coincident with a shock detected in the X-rays, we confirm the presence of a radio front, with different spectral properties with respect to the rest of the halo. We detect a radial steepening of the radio halo spectral index between 144 MHz and 342 MHz, at $\sim 30^{\prime}$ from the cluster centre, that may indicate a non constant re-acceleration time throughout the volume. We also detect a mild steepening of the spectral index towards the cluster centre. For the first time, a radial change in the slope of the radio-X-ray correlation is found, and we show that such a change could indicate an increasing fraction of cosmic ray versus thermal energy density in the cluster outskirts. Finally, we investigate the origin of the emission between the relic and the source NGC 4789, and we argue that NGC4789 could have crossed the shock originating the radio emission visible between its tail and the relic., Comment: submitted to ApJ

In this data release from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) we present 120-168MHz images covering 27% of the northern sky. Our coverage is split into two regions centred at approximately 12h45m +44$^\circ$30' and 1h00m +28$^\circ$00' and spanning 4178 and 1457 square degrees respectively. The images were derived from 3,451hrs (7.6PB) of LOFAR High Band Antenna data which were corrected for the direction-independent instrumental properties as well as direction-dependent ionospheric distortions during extensive, but fully automated, data processing. A catalogue of 4,396,228 radio sources is derived from our total intensity (Stokes I) maps, where the majority of these have never been detected at radio wavelengths before. At 6" resolution, our full bandwidth Stokes I continuum maps with a central frequency of 144MHz have: a median rms sensitivity of 83$\mu$Jy/beam; a flux density scale accuracy of approximately 10%; an astrometric accuracy of 0.2"; and we estimate the point-source completeness to be 90% at a peak brightness of 0.8mJy/beam. By creating three 16MHz bandwidth images across the band we are able to measure the in-band spectral index of many sources, albeit with an error on the derived spectral index of +/-0.2 which is a consequence of our flux-density scale accuracy and small fractional bandwidth. Our circular polarisation (Stokes V) 20" resolution 120-168MHz continuum images have a median rms sensitivity of 95$\mu$Jy/beam, and we estimate a Stokes I to Stokes V leakage of 0.056%. Our linear polarisation (Stokes Q and Stokes U) image cubes consist of 480 x 97.6 kHz wide planes and have a median rms sensitivity per plane of 10.8mJy/beam at 4' and 2.2mJy/beam at 20"; we estimate the Stokes I to Stokes Q/U leakage to be approximately 0.2%. Relativistic electrons and magnetic fields permeate the intra-cluster medium (ICM) and manifest themselves as diffuse sources of synchrotron emission observable at radio wavelengths, namely radio halos and radio relics. Although there is broad consensus that the formation of these sources is connected to turbulence and shocks in the ICM, the details of the required particle acceleration, the strength and morphology of the magnetic field in the cluster volume, and the influence of other sources of high-energy particles are poorly known. Sufficiently large samples of radio halos and relics, which would allow us to examine the variation among the source population and pinpoint their commonalities and differences, are still missing. At present, large numbers of these sources are easiest to detect at low radio frequencies, where they shine brightly. We examined the low-frequency radio emission from all 309 clusters in the second catalog of Planck Sunyaev Zel'dovich detected sources that lie within the 5634 deg$^2$ covered by the Second Data Release of the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey (LoTSS-DR2). We produced LOFAR images at different resolutions, with and without discrete sources subtracted, and created overlays with optical and X-ray images before classifying the diffuse sources in the ICM, guided by a decision tree. Overall, we found 83 clusters that host a radio halo and 26 that host one or more radio relics (including candidates). About half of them are new discoveries. The detection rate of clusters hosting a radio halo and one or more relics in our sample is $30\pm11$% and $10\pm6$%, respectively. Extrapolating these numbers, we anticipate that once LoTSS covers the entire northern sky it will provide the detection of $251\pm92$ clusters hosting a halo and $83\pm50$ clusters hosting at least one relic from Planck clusters alone., Comment: Matched to the A&A published version. The Shapley Supercluster ($\langle z \rangle\approx0.048$) contains several tens of gravitationally bound clusters and groups, making it it is an ideal subject for radio studies of cluster mergers. We used new high sensitivity radio observations to investigate the less energetic events of mass assembly in the Shapley Supercluster from supercluster down to galactic scales. We created total intensity images of the full region between A 3558 and A 3562, from $\sim 230$ to $\sim 1650$ MHz, using ASKAP, MeerKAT and the GMRT, with sensitivities ranging from $\sim 6$ to $\sim 100$ $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$. We performed a detailed morphological and spectral study of the extended emission features, complemented with ESO-VST optical imaging and X-ray data from XMM-Newton. We report the first GHz frequency detection of extremely low brightness intercluster diffuse emission on a $\sim 1$ Mpc scale connecting a cluster and a group, namely: A 3562 and the group SC 1329--313. It is morphologically similar to the X-ray emission in the region. We also found (1) a radio tail generated by ram pressure stripping in the galaxy SOS 61086 in SC 1329-313; (2) a head-tail radio galaxy, whose tail is broken and culminates in a misaligned bar; (3) ultrasteep diffuse emission at the centre of A 3558. Finally (4), we confirm the ultra-steep spectrum nature of the radio halo in A 3562. Our study strongly supports the scenario of a flyby of SC 1329-313 north of A 3562 into the supercluster core. Diffuse radio emission at the centre of galaxy clusters has been observed both in merging clusters on scales of Mpc, called giant radio haloes, and in relaxed systems with a cool-core on smaller scales, named mini haloes. Giant radio haloes and mini haloes are thought to be distinct classes of sources. However, recent observations have revealed the presence of diffuse radio emission on Mpc scales in clusters that do not show strong dynamical activity. RX J1720.1+2638 is a cool-core cluster, presenting both a bright central mini halo and a fainter diffuse, steep-spectrum emission extending beyond the cluster core that resembles giant radio halo emission. In this paper, we present new observations performed with the LOFAR Low Band Antennas (LBA) at 54 MHz. These observations, combined with data at higher frequencies, allow us to constrain the spectral properties of the radio emission. The large-scale emission presents an ultra-steep spectrum with $\alpha_{54}^{144}\sim3.2$. The radio emission inside and outside the cluster core have strictly different properties, as there is a net change in spectral index and they follow different radio-X-ray surface brightness correlations. We argue that the large-scale diffuse emission is generated by particles re-acceleration after a minor merger. While for the central mini halo we suggest that it could be generated by secondary electrons and positrons from hadronic interactions of relativistic nuclei with the dense cool-core gas, as an alternative to re-acceleration models., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context. Radio halos are megaparsec-scale diffuse radio sources{ mostly} located at the centres of merging galaxy clusters. The common mechanism invoked to explain their origin is the re-acceleration of relativistic particles caused by large-scale turbulence. Aims. Current re-acceleration models predict that a significant number of halos at high redshift should be characterised by very steep spectra ($\alpha<-1.5$) because of increasing inverse Compton energy losses. In this paper, we investigate the spectral index properties of a sample of nine clusters selected from the second Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich catalogue showing diffuse radio emission with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) in the 120-168 MHz band. This is the first time that radio halos discovered at low frequencies are followed up at higher frequencies. Methods. We analysed upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) observations in Bands 3 and 4, that is, 250-500 and 550-900 MHz respectively. These observations were combined with existing LOFAR data to obtain information on the spectral properties of the diffuse radio emission. Results. We find diffuse radio emission in the uGMRT observations for five of the nine high-$z$ radio halos previously discovered with LOFAR. For those, we measure spectral indices in the range of $-1$ to $-1.4$. For the uGMRT non-detections, we estimated that the halos should have a spectral index steeper than $-1.5$. We also confirm the presence of one candidate relic. Conclusions. Despite the small number of clusters, we find evidence that about half of the massive and merging clusters at high redshift host radio halos with a very steep spectrum. Mega-parsec scale radio sources in the form of halos and relics are often detected in dynamically disturbed galaxy clusters. Although they are associated with merger-induced turbulence and shocks, respectively, their formation is not fully understood. We aim to identify the mechanisms responsible for particle acceleration and magnetic field amplification in the halo and relics of the galaxy cluster ClG 0217+70. We observed ClG 0217+70 with LOFAR at 141 MHz and VLA at 1.5 GHz, and combine these observations with VLA 1.4 GHz archival data to study the morphological and spectral properties of the diffuse sources. We add Chandra archival data to examine the thermal and non-thermal properties of the halo. Our LOFAR and VLA data confirm the presence of a giant radio halo in the cluster centre and multiple relics in the outskirts. The radio and X-ray emission from the halo are correlated, implying a tight relation between the thermal and non-thermal components. The diffuse radio structure in the south east with a projected size of 3.5 Mpc is the most extended radio relic detected to date. The spectral index across the relic width steepens towards the cluster centre, suggesting the electron ageing in the post-shock regions. The shock Mach numbers for the relics derived from the spectral index map range between 2.0 and 3.2. However, the integrated spectral indices lead to increasingly high Mach numbers for the relics farther from the cluster centre. This discrepancy could be because the relation between injection and integrated spectra does not hold for distant shocks, suggesting that the cooling time for the radio-emitting electrons is longer than the crossing time of the shocks. The variations in the surface brightness of the relics and the low Mach numbers imply that the radio-emitting electrons are re-accelerated from fossil plasma that could originate in active galactic nuclei.

Radio halos are diffuse synchrotron sources observed in dynamically unrelaxed galaxy clusters. Current observations and models suggest that halos trace turbulent regions in the intra-cluster medium where mildly relativistic particles are re-accelerated during cluster mergers. Due to the higher luminosities and detection rates with increasing cluster mass, radio halos have been mainly observed in massive systems ($M_{500} \gtrsim 5 \times10^{14}$ M$_\odot$). Here, we report the discovery of a radio halo with a largest linear scale of $\simeq$750 kpc in PSZ2G145.92-12.53 ($z=0.03$) using LOFAR observations at 120$-$168 MHz. With a mass of $M_{500} = (1.9\pm0.2) \times 10^{14}$ M$_\odot$ and a radio power at 150 MHz of $P_{150} = (3.5 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{23}$ W/Hz, this is the least powerful radio halo in the least massive cluster discovered to date. Additionally, we discover a radio relic with a mildly convex morphology at $\sim$1.7 Mpc from the cluster center. Our results demonstrate that LOFAR has the potential to detect radio halos even in low-mass clusters, where the expectation to form them is very low ($\sim$5%) based on turbulent re-acceleration models. Radio halos and relics are Mpc-scale diffuse radio sources in galaxy clusters, with a steep spectral index $\alpha>1$ ($S\propto \nu^{-\alpha}$). It has been proposed that they arise from particle acceleration induced by turbulence and weak shocks, injected in the intracluster medium (ICM) during mergers. MACS J1149.5+2223 (MACS J1149) is a high redshift ($z=0.544$) galaxy cluster possibly hosting a radio halo and a relic. We analysed LOFAR, GMRT, and JVLA radio data at 144, 323, 1500 MHz, and Chandra X-ray data to characterise the thermal and non-thermal properties of the cluster. We obtained radio images at different frequencies to investigate the spectral properties of the radio halo. We used Chandra X-ray images to constrain the thermal properties of the cluster. We measured a steep spectrum of the halo, with $\alpha=1.49\pm 0.12$ between 144 and 1500 MHz. The radio surface brightness distribution across the halo is found to correlate with the X-ray brightness of the ICM, with a sub-linear slope in the range 0.4 to 0.6. We also report two possible cold fronts in north-east and north-west, but deeper X-ray observations are required to firmly constrain the properties of the upstream emission. We show that the combination of high redshift, steep radio spectrum, and sub-linear radio-X scaling of the halo rules out hadronic models. An old ($\sim 1 $ Gyr ago) major merger likely induced the formation of the halo through stochastic re-acceleration of relativistic electrons. We suggest that the two possible X-ray discontinuities may actually be part of the same cold front. In this case, the coolest gas pushed towards the north-west might be associated with the cool core of a sub-cluster involved in the major merger. Thermal gas in the center of galaxy clusters can show substantial motions that generate surface-brightness and temperature discontinuities known as cold fronts. The motions may be triggered by minor or off-axis mergers that preserve the cool core of the system. The dynamics of the thermal gas can also generate radio emission from the intra-cluster medium (ICM) and impact the evolution of clusters' radio sources. We aim to study the central region of Abell 1775, a system in an ambiguous dynamical state at $z=0.072$ which is known to host an extended head-tail radio galaxy, with the goal of investigating the connection between thermal and nonthermal components in its center. We made use of a deep (100 ks) Chandra observation accompanied by LOFAR 144 MHz, GMRT 235 MHz and 610 MHz, and VLA 1.4 GHz radio data. We find a spiral-like pattern in the X-ray surface brightness that is mirrored in the temperature and pseudo-entropy maps. Additionally, we characterize an arc-shaped cold front in the ICM. We interpret these features in the context of a slingshot gas tail scenario. The structure of the head-tail radio galaxy "breaks" at the position of the cold front, showing an extension that is detected only at low frequencies, likely due to its steep and curved spectrum. We speculate that particle reacceleration is occurring in the outer region of this tail, which in total covers a projected size of $\sim800$ kpc. We also report the discovery of revived fossil plasma with ultra-steep spectrum radio emission in the cluster core together with a central diffuse radio source that is bounded by the arc-shaped cold front. LOFAR is the only radio telescope that is presently capable of high-sensitivity, high-resolution (<1 mJy/b and <15") observations at ultra-low frequencies (<100 MHz). To utilise these capabilities, the LOFAR Surveys Key Science Project is undertaking a large survey to cover the entire northern sky with Low Band Antenna (LBA) observations. The LOFAR LBA Sky Survey (LoLSS) aims to cover the entire northern sky with 3170 pointings in the frequency range 42-66 MHz, at a resolution of 15 arcsec and at a sensitivity of 1 mJy/b. Here we outline the survey strategy, the observational status, the current calibration techniques, and briefly describe several scientific motivations. We also describe the preliminary public data release. The preliminary images were produced using a fully automated pipeline that aims to correct all direction-independent effects in the data. Whilst the direction-dependent effects, such as those from the ionosphere, are not yet corrected, the images presented in this work are still 10 times more sensitive than previous surveys available at these low frequencies. The preliminary data release covers 740 sqdeg around the HETDEX spring field region at a resolution of 47" with a median noise level of 5 mJy/b. The images and the catalogue with 25,247 sources are publicly released. We demonstrate that the system is capable of reaching an rms noise of 1 mJy/b and the resolution of 15" once direction-dependent effects are corrected for. LoLSS will provide the ultra-low-frequency information for hundreds of thousands of radio sources, providing critical spectral information and producing a unique dataset that can be used for a wide range of science topics such as: the search for high redshift galaxies and quasars, the study of the magnetosphere of exoplanets, and the detection of the oldest populations of cosmic-rays in galaxies, clusters of galaxies, and from AGN activity., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, Accepted A&A, catalogue and images on www.lofar-surveys.org

Many galaxy clusters host Mpc scale diffuse radio sources called radio halos. Their origin is connected to the processes that lead to the formation of clusters themselves. In order to unveil this connection, statistical studies of radio halos are necessary. We selected a sample of galaxy clusters with M500>6e14Msun and z=0.08-0.33 from the Planck SZ catalogue. In paper I, we presented the radio and X-ray data analysis that we carried out on these clusters. Here, we study the radio properties of the sample, in connection to the mass and dynamical state of clusters. We used the dynamical information derived from the X-ray data to assess the role of mergers in the origin of radio halos. We studied the distribution of clusters in the radio power-mass diagram and the role of dynamics on the radio luminosity and emissivity of radio halos. We measured the occurrence of radio halos as a function of the cluster mass and we compared it with the expectations of turbulent acceleration models. We found that more than the 90% of radio halos are in merging clusters and that their radio power correlates with the mass of the host clusters. The correlation shows a large dispersion. Interestingly, we showed that cluster dynamics contributes significantly to this dispersion with more disturbed clusters being more radio luminous. Clusters without radio halos are generally relaxed and the upper limits to their diffuse emission lie below the correlation. We showed that the radio emissivity of clusters exhibits an apparent bimodality, with the emissivity of radio halos being at least 5 times larger than the non-emission associated with more relaxed clusters. We found that the fraction of radio halos drops from ~70% in high mass clusters to ~35% in the lower mass systems of the sample and we showed that this result is in good agreement with the expectations from turbulent re-acceleration models., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Radio halos are synchrotron diffuse sources at the centre of a fraction of galaxy clusters. The study of large samples of clusters with adequate radio and X-ray data is necessary to investigate the origin of radio halos and their connection with the cluster dynamics and formation history. The aim of this paper is to compile a well-selected sample of galaxy clusters with deep radio observations to perform an unbiased statistical study of the properties of radio halos. We selected 75 clusters with M > = 6e14 Msun at z=0.08-0.33 from the Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich catalogue. Clusters without suitable radio data were observed with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and/or the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) to complete the information about the possible presence of diffuse emission. We used archival Chandra X-ray data to derive information on the clusters' dynamical states. This observational campaign led to the detection of several cluster-scale diffuse radio sources and candidates that deserve future follow-up observations. Here we summarise their properties and add information resulting from our new observations. For the clusters where we did not detect any hint of diffuse emission, we derived new upper limits to their diffuse flux. We have built the largest mass-selected (> 80 per cent complete in mass) sample of galaxy clusters with deep radio observations available to date. We present new LOFAR observations of the massive merging galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745. The cluster hosts the most powerful radio halo known to date. These new observations, in combination with published uGMRT (300$-$850 MHz) and VLA (1$-$6.5 GHz) data, reveal that the halo is more extended than previously thought, with a largest linear size of $\sim2.2 \rm Mpc$. The halo shows a steep spectrum ($\alpha_{144\,\text{MHz}}^{1.5\,\text{GHz}}\sim-1.4$) and a steepening ($\alpha_{1.5 \text{GHz}}^{5.5 \text{GHz}}\sim-1.9$) above 1.5 GHz. We find a strong scattering in spectral index maps on scales of 50$-$100 kpc. We suggest that such a strong scattering may be a consequence of the regime where inverse Compton dominate the energy losses of electrons. The spectral index becomes steeper and shows an increased curvature in the outermost regions of the halo. We combined the radio data with \textit{Chandra} observations to investigate the connection between the thermal and non-thermal components of the intracluster medium (ICM). Despite a significant substructure in the halo emission, the radio brightness correlates strongly with the X-ray brightness at all observed frequencies. The radio-versus-X-ray brightness correlation slope steepens at a higher radio frequency (from $b_{144 \text{MHz}}=0.67\pm0.05$ to $b_{3.0 \text{GHz}}=0.98\pm0.09$) and the spectral index shows a significant anti correlation with the X-ray brightness. Both pieces of evidence further support a spectral steepening in the external regions. The compelling evidence for a steep spectral index, the existence of a spectral break above 1.5 GHz, and the dependence of radio and X-ray surface brightness correlation on frequency are interpreted in the context of turbulent reacceleration models. We examine the X-ray, optical, and radio properties for the members clusters of a new supercluster discovered during the SRG/eROSITA Performance Verification phase. In the 140 deg2 eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) field we detect a previously unknown supercluster consisting of a chain of eight galaxy clusters at z=0.36. The redshifts of these members are determined through HSC photometric measurements. We examine the X-ray morphological and dynamical properties, gas and total mass out to R500 of the members and compare them with the general population of clusters detected in the eFEDS field. We further investigate the gas in the bridge region between the cluster members for a potential WHIM detection. Radio follow-up observations with LOFAR and uGMRT are used to search for diffuse emission and constrain the dynamic state of the system. We do not find significant differences in the morphological parameters and properties of the intra-cluster medium of the clusters embedded in this large-scale filament compared to eFEDS clusters. We also provide upper limits on the electron number density and mass of the warm-hot intergalactic medium as provided by the eROSITA data. These limits are consistent with previously reported values for the detections in the vicinity of clusters of galaxies. In LOFAR and uGMRT follow-up observations of the northern part of this supercluster we find two new radio relics that are the result of major merger activity in the system. These early results show the potential of eROSITA to probe large-scale structures such as superclusters and the properties of their members. Our forecasts show that we will be able to detect 450 superclusters with 3000 member clusters located in the eROSITA_DE region at the final eROSITA all-sky survey depth, enabling statistical studies of the properties of superclusters and their constituents embedded in the cosmic web., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication by A&A

Radio synchrotron emission from the bridges of low-density gas connecting galaxy clusters and groups is a challenge for particle acceleration processes. In this work, we analyse the Coma radio bridge using new LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations at 144 MHz. LOFAR detects the bridge and its substructures with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution. We find that the radio emission peaks on the NGC 4839 group. Towards the halo, in front of the NGC 4839 group, the radio brightness decreases and streams of radio emission connect the NGC 4839 group to the radio relic. Using X-ray observations, we find that thermal and non-thermal plasma are moderately correlated with a sub-linear scaling. We use archival radio data at 326 MHz to constrain the spectral index in the bridge, and quantify the distribution of particles and magnetic field at different frequencies. We find that the spectrum is steeper than $-1.4 \pm 0.2$, and that the emission could be clumpier at 326 MHz than at 144 MHz. Using cosmological simulations and a simplified approach to compute particle acceleration, we derive under which conditions turbulent acceleration of mildly relativistic electrons could generate the radio emission in the bridge. Assuming that the initial energy ratio of the seed electrons is $3 \cdot 10^{-4}$ with respect to the thermal gas, we are able to reproduce the observed luminosity. Our results suggest that the seed electrons released by radiogalaxies in the bridge and the turbulence generated by the motion of gas and galaxies are essential to produce the radio emission., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

Low-frequency radio observations are revealing an increasing number of diffuse synchrotron sources from galaxy clusters, dominantly in the form of radio halos or radio relics. The existence of this diffuse synchrotron emission indicates the presence of relativistic particles and magnetic fields. It is still an open question what mechanisms exactly are responsible for the population of relativistic electrons driving this synchrotron emission. The LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Deep Fields offer a unique view of this problem. Reaching noise levels below 30 $\mu$Jy/beam, these are the deepest images made at the low frequency of 144 MHz. This paper presents a search for diffuse emission in galaxy clusters in the first data release of the LOFAR Deep Fields. We detect a new high-redshift radio halo with a flux density of $8.9 \pm 1.0$ mJy and corresponding luminosity of $P_{144\mathrm{MHz}}=(3.6 \pm 0.6)\times10^{25}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ in an X-ray detected cluster at $z=0.77$ with a mass estimate of $M_{500} = 3.3_{-1.7}^{+1.1} \times 10^{14} M_\odot.$ Deep upper limits are placed on clusters with non-detections. We compare the results to the correlation between halo luminosity and cluster mass derived for radio halos found in the literature. This study is one of few to find diffuse emission in low mass ($M_{500} < 5\times10^{14} M_\odot$) systems and shows that deep low-frequency observations of galaxy clusters are fundamental for opening up a new part of parameter space in the study of non-thermal phenomena in galaxy clusters., Comment: This paper is part of the 1st data release of the LoTSS Deep Fields. Radio halos are extended ($\sim{\rm Mpc}$), steep-spectrum sources found in the central region of dynamically disturbed clusters of galaxies. Only a handful of radio halos have been reported to reside in galaxy clusters with a mass $M_{500}\lesssim5\times10^{14}\,M_\odot$. In this paper we present a LOFAR 144 MHz detection of a radio halo in the galaxy cluster Abell 990 with a mass of $M_{500}=(4.9\pm0.3)\times10^{14}\,M_\odot$. The halo has a projected size of $\sim$700$\,{\rm kpc}$ and a flux density of $20.2\pm2.2\,{\rm mJy}$ or a radio power of $1.2\pm0.1\times10^{24}\,{\rm W\,Hz}^{-1}$ at the cluster redshift ($z=0.144$) which makes it one of the two halos with the lowest radio power detected to date. Our analysis of the emission from the cluster with Chandra archival data using dynamical indicators shows that the cluster is not undergoing a major merger but is a slightly disturbed system with a mean temperature of $5\,{\rm keV}$. The low X-ray luminosity of $L_{X}=(3.66\pm0.08)\times10^{44}\,{\rm ergs\,s}^{-1}$ in the 0.1--2.4 keV band implies that the cluster is one of the least luminous systems known to host a radio halo. Our detection of the radio halo in Abell 990 opens the possibility of detecting many more halos in poorly-explored less-massive clusters with low-frequency telescopes such as LOFAR, MWA (Phase II) and uGMRT.

Diffuse cluster radio sources, in the form of radio halos and relics, reveal the presence of cosmic rays and magnetic fields in the intracluster medium (ICM). These cosmic rays are thought to be (re-)accelerated through ICM turbulence and shock waves generated by cluster merger events. Here we characterize the presence of diffuse radio emission in known galaxy clusters in the HETDEX Spring Field, covering 424 deg$^2$. For this, we developed a method to extract individual targets from LOFAR observations processed with the LoTSS DDF-pipeline. This procedure enables improved calibration and joint imaging and deconvolution of multiple pointings of selected targets. The calibration strategy can also be used for LOFAR Low-Band Antenna (LBA) and international-baseline observations. The fraction of Planck PSZ2 clusters with any diffuse radio emission apparently associated with the ICM is $73\pm17\%$. We detect a total of 10 radio halos and 12 candidate halos in the HETDEX Spring Field. Five clusters host radio relics. The fraction of radio halos in Planck PSZ2 clusters is $31\pm11\%$, and $62\pm15\%$ when including the candidate radio halos. Based on these numbers, we expect that there will be at least $183 \pm 65$ radio halos found in the LoTSS survey in PSZ2 clusters, in agreement with predictions. The integrated flux densities for the radio halos were computed by fitting exponential models to the radio images. From these flux densities, we determine the cluster mass (M$_{500}$) and Compton Y parameter (Y$_{500}$) 150 MHz radio power (P$_{\rm{150 MHz}}$) scaling relations for Planck PSZ2-detected radio halos. We find that the slopes of these relations are steeper than those determined from the 1.4 GHz radio powers. The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a three mega-second Multi-Year Heritage Programme to obtain X-ray observations of a minimally-biased, signal-to-noise limited sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The programme, described in detail in this paper, aims to study the ultimate products of structure formation in time and mass. It is composed of a census of the most recent objects to have formed (Tier-1: 0.05 < z < 0.2; 2 x 10e14 M_sun < M_500 < 9 x 10e14 M_sun), together with a sample of the highest-mass objects in the Universe (Tier-2: z < 0.6; M_500 > 7.25 x 10e14 M_sun). The programme will yield an accurate vision of the statistical properties of the underlying population, measure how the gas properties are shaped by collapse into the dark matter halo, uncover the provenance of non-gravitational heating, and resolve the major uncertainties in mass determination that limit the use of clusters for cosmological parameter estimation. We will acquire X-ray exposures of uniform depth, designed to obtain individual mass measurements accurate to 15-20% under the hydrostatic assumption. Diffuse radio emission has been found in many galaxy clusters, predominantly in massive systems which are in the state of merging. The radio emission can usually be classified as relic or halo emission, which are believed to be related to merger shocks or volume-filling turbulence, respectively. Recent observations have revealed radio bridges for some pairs of very closeby galaxy clusters. The mechanisms that may allow to explain the high specific density of relativistic electrons, necessary to explain the radio luminosity of these bridge regions, are poorly explored. We analyse the galaxy cluster Abell 1430 with LoTSS data in detail and complement it with recent JVLA L-band observations, XMM-Newton, Chandra, and SDSS data. Moreover, we compare our results to clusters extracted from the "The Three Hundred Project" cosmological simulation. We find that Abell 1430 consists of two components, namely A1430-A and A1430-B. We speculate that the two components undergo an off-axis merger. The more massive component shows diffuse radio emission which can be classified as radio halo showing a low radio power given the mass of the cluster. Most interestingly, there is extended diffuse radio emission, dubbed as the `Pillow', which is apparently related to A1430-B and thus related to low density intracluster or intergalactic medium. To date, a only few examples for emission originating from such regions are known. These discoveries are crucial to constrain possible acceleration mechanisms, which may allow to explain the presence of relativistic electrons in these regions. Our results indicate a spectral index of $\alpha_{144\,\text{MHz}}^{1.5\,\text{GHz}}=-1.4\pm0.5$ for the Pillow. The radio source at the center of the galaxy cluster Abell 2626, also known as the Kite, stands out for its unique morphology composed of four, symmetric arcs. Previous studies have probed the properties of this source at different frequencies and its interplay with the surrounding thermal plasma, but the puzzle of its origin is still unsolved. We use new LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observation from the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey at 144 MHz to investigate the origin of the Kite.} We present a detailed analysis of the new radio data which we combined with archival radio and X-ray observations. We have produced a new, resolved spectral index map of the source with a resolution of 7$''$ and we studied the spatial correlation of radio and X-ray emission to investigate the interplay between thermal and non-thermal plasma. The new LOFAR data have changed our view of the Kite by discovering two steep-spectrum ($\alpha<-1.5$) plumes of emission connected to the arcs. The spectral analysis shows, for the first time, a spatial trend of the spectrum along the arcs with evidence of curved synchrotron spectra and a spatial correlation with the X-ray surface brightness. On the basis of our results, we propose that the Kite was originally an X-shaped radio galaxy whose fossil radio plasma, after the end of the activity of the central active galactic nucleus, has been compressed due to motions of the thermal plasma in which it is encompassed. The interplay between the compression and advection of the fossil plasma, with the restarting of the nuclear activity of the central galaxy, could have enhanced the radio emission of the fossil plasma producing the arcs of the Kite. We present also the first, low-frequency observation of a jellyfish galaxy in the same field, in which we detect extended, low-frequency emission without a counterpart at higher frequencies., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Collisions between galaxy clusters dissipate enormous amounts of energy in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) through turbulence and shocks. In the process, Mpc-scale diffuse synchrotron emission in form of radio halos and relics can form. However, little is known about the very early phase of the collision. We used deep radio observations from 53 MHz to 1.5 GHz to study the pre-merging galaxy clusters A1758N and A1758S that are $\sim2$ Mpc apart. We confirm the presence of a giant bridge of radio emission connecting the two systems that was reported only tentatively in our earlier work. This is the second large-scale radio bridge observed to date in a cluster pair. The bridge is clearly visible in the LOFAR image at 144 MHz and tentatively detected at 53 MHz. Its mean radio emissivity is more than one order of magnitude lower than that of the radio halos in A1758N and A1758S. Interestingly, the radio and X-ray emissions of the bridge are correlated. Our results indicate that non-thermal phenomena in the ICM can be generated also in the region of compressed gas in-between infalling systems., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We present LOFAR observations of one of the most spectacular objects in the radio sky: Abell 2255. This is a nearby ($z = 0.0806$) merging galaxy cluster hosting one of the first radio halos ever detected in the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The deep LOFAR images at 144 MHz of the central $\sim10$ Mpc$^2$ region show a plethora of emission on different scales, from tens of kpc to above Mpc sizes. In this work, we focus on the innermost region of the cluster. Among the numerous interesting features observed, we discover remarkable bright and filamentary structures embedded in the radio halo. We incorporate archival WSRT 1.2 GHz data to study the spectral properties of the diffuse synchrotron emission and find a very complex spectral index distribution in the halo spanning a wide range of values. We combine the radio data with Chandra observations to investigate the connection between the thermal and non-thermal components by quantitatively comparing the radio and X-ray surface brightness and the spectral index of the radio emission with the thermodynamical quantities of the ICM. Despite the multitude of structures observed in the radio halo, we find that the X-ray and radio emission are overall well correlated. The fact that the steepest spectrum emission is located in the cluster center and traces regions with high entropy possibly suggests the presence of seed particles injected by radio galaxies that are spread in the ICM by turbulence generating the extended radio halo., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables (including appendix). Diffuse radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is observed in a number of merging galaxy clusters. It is currently believed that in mergers a fraction of the kinetic energy is channeled into non-thermal components, such as turbulence, cosmic rays and magnetic fields, that may lead to the formation of giant synchrotron sources in the ICM. Studying merging galaxy clusters in different evolutionary phases is fundamental to understanding the origin of radio emission in the ICM. We observed the nearby galaxy cluster pair RXC J1825.3+3026 ($z\sim0.065$) and CIZA J1824.1+3029 ($z\sim0.071$) at 120-168 MHz with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) and made use of a deep (240 ks) XMM-Newton dataset to study the non-thermal and thermal properties of the system. RXC J1825.3+3026 is in a complex dynamical state, with a primary on-going merger in the E-W direction and a secondary later stage merger with a group of galaxies in the SW, while CIZA J1824.1+3029 is dynamically relaxed. These two clusters are in a pre-merger phase. We report the discovery of a Mpc-scale radio halo with a low surface brightness extension in RXC J1825.3+3026 that follows the X-ray emission from the cluster center to the remnant of a galaxy group in the SW. This is among the least massive systems and the faintest giant radio halo known to date. Contrary to this, no diffuse radio emission is observed in CIZA J1824.1+3029 nor in the region between the pre-merger cluster pair. The power spectra of the X-ray surface brightness fluctuations of RXC J1825.3+3026 and CIZA J1824.1+3029 are in agreement with the findings for clusters exhibiting a radio halo and the ones where no radio emission has been detected, respectively. Nearby clusters of galaxies, z<0.1, are cosmic structures still under formation. Understanding the thermodynamic properties of merging clusters can provide crucial information on how they grow in the local universe. A detailed study of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) properties of un-relaxed systems is essential to understand the fate of in-falling structures and, more generally, the virialization process. We analyzed a mosaic of XMM-Newton observations (240 ks) of the Lyra system (z=0.067) that shows a complex dynamical state. We find the main cluster RXC J1825.3+3026 to be in a late merger phase, whereas its companion CIZA J1824.1+3029 is a relaxed cool-core cluster. We estimate a mass ratio of ~1:2 for the pair. No diffuse X-ray emission is found in the region between them, indicating that these clusters are in a pre-merger phase. We found evidence of a galaxy group infalling on RXC J1825.3+3026 in an advanced state of disruption. The Southern Galaxy, one of the brightest galaxies in the Lyra complex, was very likely at the center of the infalling group. This galaxy has a gaseous corona indicating that it was able to retain some of its gas after the ram-pressure stripping of the intra-group medium. In this scenario the diffuse emission excess observed southwest of RXC J1825.3+3026 could be due to gas once belonging to the group and/or to cluster ICM dislocated by the passage of the group. Finally, we identified three high-velocity galaxies aligned between RXC J1825.3+3026 and the SG, two of these showing evidence of gas stripped from them during infall. We estimate them to be currently falling onto the main cluster at an infall velocity of ~ 3000 km/s.
