Abstract

Efficient ways to re-establish pastures are needed on land that requires a rotation between pastures and crops. We conducted trials in southern inland Queensland with a range of tropical perennial grasses sown into wheat stubble that was modified in various ways. Differing seedbed preparations involved cultivation or herbicide sprays, with or without fertilizer at sowing. Seed was broadcast and sowing time ranged from spring through to autumn on 3 different soil types. Seed quality and post-sowing rainfall were major determinants of the density of sown grass plants in the first year. Light cultivation sometimes enhanced establishment compared with herbicide spraying of standing stubble, most often on harder-setting soils. A nitrogen + phosphorus mixed fertilizer rarely produced any improvement in sown grass establishment and sometimes increased weed competition. The effects were similar for all types of grass seed from hairy fascicles to large, smooth panicoid seeds and minute Eragrostis seeds. Trials in the Condamine-Balonne basin, Australia, compared 11 promising perennial pasture grass accessions (4 Bothriochloa, 2 Cenchrus, 2 Urochloa and 1 each of Digitaria, Eragrostis and Panicum species) against the best similar commercial cultivars on the basis of ease of establishment from seed, persistence once established, forage yield and ease of seed production. Accessions sown at a site were determined by prior experience with them on a range of soils. High quality seed was relatively easy to produce for both Urochloa species and for Eragrostis curvula CPI 30374 but problematic for the Bothriochloa spp. Once established, all accessions persisted for 3–5 years and most were well grazed, but adequate establishment was sometimes a problem with Panicum stapfianum and Bothriochloa ewartiana. The dry matter yield ratings of the non-commercial lines were similar to those of the commercial equivalents of the same species. While agronomically valuable, none of the promising new grasses was considered worthy of commercialization at this point because their strengths did not warrant the setting up of a seed-production business in competition with current commercial enterprises. 6. Effectiveness, Efficiency, and Appeal: Pick Any Two? The Influence of Learning Domains and Learning Outcomes on Designer Judgments of Useful Instructional Methods

Abstract

When choosing instructional methods, instructional designers trade-off or sacrifice an outcome, such as effectiveness, efficiency, or appeal. In instructional planning theory, this is referred to as values about priorities. When "values about priorities" are combined with "conditions about content," we expect that a different instructional outcome is sacrificed. The purpose of this research is to expand the ideas presented in our previous paper on the topic of how instructional designers actually use "instructional planning theory" to judge the usefulness of instructional methods. We asked 56 instructional designers to rate the usefulness of 31 instructional methods within four content conditions (cognitive, affective, psychomotor, and interpersonal) and three outcome values (effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal). The results show that learning domain, learning outcome, and the interaction of domain and outcome have a statistically-significant influence on a designer's judgments regarding the usefulness of an instructional method. Furthermore, useful methods for cognitive content sacrifice appeal, useful methods for affective and psychomotor content sacrifice efficiency, and useful methods for interpersonal content sacrifice effectiveness. Overall, the results provide evidence that supports the core principles of instructional planning theory, specifically associated with the interaction between conditions and values. The results also provide instructional designers further guidance in selecting the most useful instructional methods.

9. The Influence of Cognitive Domain Content Levels and Gender on Designer Judgments Regarding Useful Instructional Methods

Abstract

Instructional theory is intended to guide instructional designers in selecting the best instructional methods for a given situation. There have been numerous qualitative investigations into how instructional designers make decisions and the alignment of those decisions with theoretical influences. The purpose of this research is to more quantitatively explore the question of how instructional designers actually use "instructional planning theory" to judge the usefulness of instructional methods. We asked 56 instructional designers to rate the usefulness of 31 instructional methods for six different cognitive domain content level conditions. The results show that content level has a statistically-significant influence on a designer's judgments regarding the usefulness of an instructional method. A designer's gender also has a statistically-significant influence on a designer's judgments regarding methods, but a weak effect size limits this result. Overall, the results provide evidence that supports the core principles of instructional planning theory, specifically method generality. The results also provide instructional designers further guidance in selecting the most useful instructional methods for cognitive domain content levels.

Abstract

Iron is an essential nutrient for virtually all forms of life. Because of its redox properties and involvement in a wide range of biological processes, a number of qualitative and quantitative chemical tools have been developed to detect reduced (Fe2+) and oxidized (Fe3+) forms of iron in biomolecules. These types of measurements are not only important in detecting iron species in solution, but also in understanding iron distribution, accumulation, and role in physiological and pathological processes. Here, we use UV–vis spectrophotometry and three common chromogenic reagents, ferrozine, 2,2′-bipyridine, and 1,10-phenanthroline to detect and quantify the concentration of ferrous ions in aqueous solutions, owing to the unique absorption spectra, specific molar absorptivity, and characteristic colors of these Fe2+-chelator complexes. Our results show that the kinetics of the formation of the {Fe2+-(ferrozine)3} complex, but not the{Fe2+-(bipyridine)3} or the {Fe(II)-(phenanthroline)3} complexes depend on the concentration of the iron chelator, requiring up to 20 min to complete when close to stoichiometric ratios are employed. The molar absorptivity values of these complexes under excess chelator concentrations were ~ 10% to 15% higher than reported literature values (i.e. 31,500 ± 1500 M−1 cm−1 for ferrozine at 562 nm, 9950 ± 100 M−1 cm−1 for 2,2′-bipyridine at 522 nm, and 12,450 ± 370 M−1 cm−1 for 1,10-phenanthroline at 510 nm). Our results have important implications when quantifying iron in biological systems and reveal optimal experimental conditions that must be employed for the accurate measurements of ferrous ions, whether free in solution, or after reduction of protein-bound ferric ions.

Abstract

Instructional theory is intended to guide instructional designers in selecting the best instructional methods for a given situation. There have been numerous qualitative investigations into how instructional designers make decisions and the alignment of those decisions with theoretical influences. The purpose of this research is to more quantitatively explore the question of how instructional designers actually use instructional planning theory to judge the usefulness of instructional methods. We asked 56 instructional designers to rate the usefulness of 31 instructional methods for six different cognitive domain content level conditions. The results show that content level has a statistically-significant influence on a designer’s judgments regarding the usefulness of an instructional method. A designer’s gender also has a statistically-significant influence on a designer’s judgments regarding methods, but a weak effect size limits this result. Overall, the results provide evidence that supports the core principles of instructional planning theory, specifically method generality. The results also provide instructional designers further guidance in selecting the most useful instructional methods for cognitive domain content levels.

Abstract

Australian science has evolved to include a number of initiatives designed to promote and guide ethical and culturally appropriate Indigenous participation and engagement. While interest and overall engagement between Indigenous people and marine scientists appears to have grown in the last decade there are also signs that some researchers may not be setting out to engage with Indigenous Australians on the right foot. This research seeks to move beyond anecdotal evidence about engagement of marine researchers with Indigenous Australians by gathering empirical information from the scientists’ perspective. Our survey of 128 respondents showed that 63% (n = 79) of respondents have engaged with Indigenous communities in some way throughout their career, however, most marine research projects have not included Indigenous engagement and when it occurs it is often shorter than 3 years in duration. Responses indicated that the majority of marine scientists see mutual benefits from engagement, do not avoid it and believe it will become more important in the future. We identify a number of challenges and opportunities for marine research institutions, marine researchers and Indigenous communities if positive aspirations for engagement are to be converted to respectful, long-term and mutually beneficial engagement.

40. Features of autism in Rett syndrome and severe mental retardation.

Abstract

It has long been recognized that there is phenotypic overlap between Rett syndrome (RS) and autism. Advances in our clinical and genetic understanding of RS over the past decade have made clear that the cause and course of RS and autism are distinct (except perhaps in a few cases). Despite this, further delineation of the phenotypic overlap between RS and autism is warranted to enhance clinical decision-making and to further understanding of neuropathological development in both disorders. The present study measured autistic symptoms using the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) in a sample of girls with RS and a comparison group of girls with severe and profound mental retardation (SMR). Controlling for developmental level and motor ability, girls with RS scored more highly than those with SMR on the Sensory and Relating subscales. In contrast, there were no group differences on the Body and Object use, Language and Social and Self-help subscales. Further work on the characterisation of the behavioral phenotype of genetic disorders such as RS and autism may aid in identifying the neuropathogenic processes that lead from gene-to-brain-to-behavior. Abstract

Systematic data from a multidisciplinary clinical assessment of a large series of females with Rett syndrome (RS; n=87) is presented. Participants' ages ranged from 2 years 1 month to 44 years 10 months. Areas assessed included oromotor skills, feeding problems, growth, breathing abnormalities, mobility, postural abnormalities and joint deformities, epilepsy, hand use and stereotypies, self-care, and cognitive and communication skills. Many previously reported trends in the presentation of RS over time were confirmed, notably the increasingly poor growth and near pervasiveness of fixed joint deformities and scoliosis in adulthood. In contrast, there was a slight trend towards improved autonomic function in adulthood, whereas feeding difficulties increased into middle childhood and then reached a plateau. Improvements in mobility into adolescence were followed by a decline in those skills in adulthood. Levels of dependency were high, confirming findings from previous studies. Despite the presence of repetitive hand movements, a range of hand-use skills was seen in individuals of all ages. Cognitive and communication skills were limited, but there was little evidence of deterioration of these abilities with age. These findings confirm that RS is not a degenerative condition and indicate that intervention and support to maintain and increase motor skills, daily living skills, and cognitive and communicative functioning are appropriate targets for individuals with RS.
