Resumo: A presença de cerâmica portuguesa nos territórios coloniais atlânticos há muito que tem sido notada. Faiança, cerâmica comum e cerâmica vidrada eram enviadas em quantidades massivas para as colónias portuguesas do Atlântico, utilizadas nas actividades domésticas e industriais, fundamentais na manutenção do estilo de vida europeu que se tentava manter nas possessões ultramarinas e de extrema importância económica para a subsistência das olarias portuguesas. Este artigo planeia ser uma introdução ao enorme potencial de pesquisa que é a análise das evidências cerâmicas portuguesas espalhadas pelo Atlântico. Abstract: The presence of Portuguese ceramics in colonial Atlantic territories has been noted for some years now. Tin-glazed ware, redwares, and glazed wares were sent in massive amounts into the Portuguese Atlantic colonies and used in domestic and industrial activities. These objects were fundamental in the preservation of a European lifestyle that settlers and their descendants tried to hold to and important for the economic growth of Portuguese pottery production. This paper aims to be an introduction to the enormous research potential that Portuguese ceramics in the Atlantic represent.

Este dossiê reune autorxs da Argentina, Brasil, Equador, Estados Unidos, Guiana e Portugal que trazem a Arqueologia do Colonialismo em seu campo de visão analítica. Foram considerados diversos lugares ao redor do Oceano Atlântico e fora dele, como no Oceano Pacífico, buscando compreender as relações locais e globais, os deslocamentos voluntários e forçados, os seus motivos distintos e os efeitos que ainda reverberam no presente. Os artigos também compartilham da consideração de que a Arqueologia “surge colonial e conserva colonialidades, seja na teoria como na prática” (HARTEMANN; MORAES, 2018, p. 11), sendo necessário atuar para descolonizá-la.

UID/NAN/50024/2019 M-ERA-MNT/0002/2015 UIDB/04209/2020 UIDP/04209/2020 Salt was extracted from saltpans, in the South shore of Tagus River by evaporation of the salted sea water which penetrates into the estuary. The walls and the bottom of those saltpans were made of local clays to retain the sea water, and ceramic sherds have been used to endure those walls and also to allow people to walk on the saltpans’ walls. Those sherds constitute an example of the ceramics production in Lisbon workshops, starting in the mid-16th century and reaching high levels of quality in the 17th and 18th century. A detailed archaeometric study of 14 selected sherds dated from the 16th to the early 18th century has been made and the conjugation of the information provided by the micro-Raman, XRD and XRF experiments for those sherds and clays collected locally, allowed us the characterisation of the Lisbon ceramics in that period. Three main groups could be identified in the ceramic bodies; all made with locally collected clays of Miocene origin. In the first group, the potters used raw materials from the clay sources located at Santa Catarina area in Lisbon, most probably mixed with Lapa clays, which were fired at a high temperatures, ranging from 850ºC to 950ºC. Gehlenite and quartz are the dominant minerals of these ceramic bodies. In the second and third groups of Lisbon ceramic bodies, made with Prazeres clays, diopside was also detected but with variable amounts of gehlenite. Clay formations mineralogy mainly include kaolinite, muscovite/illite, quartz, calcite, and feldspars (albite and microcline). publishersversion published

UIDB/04209/2020 UIDP/04209/2020 Throughout history, the forest has generated spiritual and artistic concepts and representations, allowed economic and social uses and acquired utilitarian and playful functions. Crossing different periods and contexts, this book aims to reflect on innovative themes ranging from representation to forest management and enjoyment. The narrative, intentionally polyhedral, explores the representations of forests, woods and groves in the stained glass of national production from the medieval and modern times, as well as in the faience from the 16th to the 18th centuries. At the same time, the exploitation and regeneration of forest resources is analyzed, considering territorial management, respective or land use planning and fruition, enjoying natural elements from the end of the Middle Ages to the 19th century. And, finally, it addresses the relationship and meanings that are established between royal hunting and leisure in the royal preserves at the end of the constitutional monarchy. Intentionally, we tried to work on chronological periods prior to the great ecological scourges triggered by World Wars and the world demographic boom of the 20th century, from which the relationship with the forest changed exponentially. Currently, in a paradigm of ecological-environmental reflection, it is considered that the world forest heritage is at risk and, as a result of this unquestionable reality, the life of the planet, as we know it, is also jeopardisedk. With this work, in addition to bringing to light issues hitherto left in the shade about forest studies, betting on an innovative approach around the theme -forest, valuing it and remembering also the prominent place it has occupied over the centuries and which the 21st century is expected to value again. publishersversion published

UIDB/04209/2020 UIDP/04209/2020 Entre 2014 e 2018 efectuaram-se quatro missões de arqueologia na ilha do Corvo, no arquipélago dos Açores, procurando promover a ligação entre a história, a arqueologia e a comunidade local. O objectivo principal era a descoberta de vestígios da primitiva capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, primeiro templo da ilha, fundado nos finais do século XVI, entretanto desaparecido. Ainda que a existência da dita capela não tenha sido confirmada foram produzidos novos contributos para o estudo da realidade insular de uma ilha periférica, mas intrinsecamente ligada às grandes rotas transatlânticas da Época Moderna. A cultura material identificada permitiu gerar conclusões sobre a ocupação daquele território entre o século XVI e o século XX sobretudo a nível do consumo doméstico, tipo de alimentação e economia. From 2014 to 2018, four archaeological expeditions took place in Corvo island, on the Azorean archipelago, seeking to encourage stronger relationships between its local historical and archaeological heritage, and the local community. The main goal of these campaigns was to locate the remains of the Nossa Senhora do Rosário chapel, the first religious temple of the island built on the late sixteenth century. The excavations did not permit the identification of the chapel, however provided new contributions towards the study of the everyday life of that small island, located on the periphery of the European world, though connected to the great transatlantic routes of the Modern Age. The material culture provided new evidence regarding the human occupation Arqueologia nos Açoresof that territory, between the 16th and the 20th century, concerning domestic activities, food consumption and economic realities. publishersversion published

UIDB/04209/2020 UIDP/04209/2020 DL57/2016/CP1453/CT0084 In the Early Modern age, Portugal was among the first European countries to engage in overseas trade and colonial ventures. The influx of new people and things rapidly transformed it into a multicultural country in permanent contact with the rest of Europe and the wider world. While we possess a vast amount of knowledge describing the overseas contacts and acquisition of goods from historical documents, in recent years archaeological excavations have begun to reveal direct evidence of these interactions. This includes thousands of people and objects such as ceramics, ivory and stone artefacts produced in overseas territories in Africa, South America and Asia. They were exported in vast amounts to several European countries, and are frequently found in archaeological excavations. These commodities were in part responsible for changing European perceptions of the world, its dimensions and cultural plurality. They also rapidly left their mark on European goods production, leading to changes in aesthetics and the introduction of new forms. This paper will discuss some of these objects in terms of how they reflect an Early Modern globalized world, and their influence on European daily life. publishersversion published

UIDB/04209/2020 UIDP/04209/2020 Portuguese tin-glaze ware decorated in blue and/or purple on white has been made in Portugal from at least 1570 using traditional methods up until the late 18th century. During this time, these ceramics were decorated with many different motifs with boats or ships being among the less frequent representations. These are shown in many different ways, most of the time illustrated while sailing. Several types of vessels have been recorded, from the small fishing boat associated with the fisherman to large vessels believed to correspond to ships, pataxos, naus or even galleons along with other types of vessels known in the 17th and 18th centuries. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of this iconographic source, depicting diverse types of boats and how those relate to the ships from different flags that pottery makers would observe daily entering the Portuguese ports, considering their economic, social and symbolic importance. publishersversion published

A produção de púcaros em barro, utilizados para o consumo de água será certamente uma tradição mais recuada, contudo, foi durante a época moderna que os púcaros portugueses desenvolvem uma fama internacional, que os faz serem exportados em grandes quantidades para locais como o Norte da Europa ou as colónias do novo mundo onde a sua cor, cheiro e o sabor que fornecem os fez serem apreciados. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the production and consumption of drinking cups in Portugal examining their productive and decorative characteristics and establishing their relation with the ingestion of water between the 15th and 18th centuries. Although drinking cups started to be used much earlier, during the early modern age an international demand for such objects emerges. This fame will take them to places from Northern Europe to the New World where their colour, taste and smell were highly appreciated. publishersversion published

UID/HIS/04209/2019 DL 57/2016/CP1453/CT0084 Archaeological excavations conducted in Lisbon and nearby cities have yielded a significant amount of a type of pottery from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century contexts not made in Europe. These bear characteristics allowing them to be associated with African or Brazilian productions and probably used by African populations. Although generally absent from the archaeological record, accounts from the mid-fifteenth century onwards note the presence of African people in Portugal, most as slaves. Materially speaking, however, it has always been assumed that they adapted to using local material culture, hence the lack of archaeological evidence marking them as distinct groups. However, the non-European pots discussed here reveal extensive wear marks and are found associated with domestic contexts. Most slaves worked in such contexts, as borne out by the historical evidence. The purpose of this paper is to start a discussion on the ways which these objects could have been used by non-Europeans in Portugal and how they reflect the presence of African populations with a specific identity and distinct social practices. authorsversion published

Durante as escavações ali efectuadas foram recuperados diversos elementos de cultura material associados às mais diversas vivências quotidianas. As cerâmicas vermelhas, vidradas e faianças são as mais abundantes, mas outros elementos vítreos, metálicos e de osso foram igualmente recuperados. Os materiais correspondem a uma ocupação entre os meados da primeira metade do século XVII e os inícios do século XVIII. publishersversion published
