1. Collective lattice excitations in the dynamic route for melting hydrodynamic 2D-crystals

Abstract

Surface stiffnesses engender steady patterns of Faraday waves (FWs), so called hydrodynamic crystals as correspond to ordered wave lattices made of discrete subharmonics under monochromatic driving. Mastering rules are both inertia-imposed parametric resonance for frequency-halving together with rigidity-driven nonlinearity for wavefield self-focusing. They harness the discretization needed for coherent FW-packets to localize in space and time. Collective lattice excitations are observed as dispersionless propagating dislocations that lead periodic modulations arising from explicit symmetry breaking. In a field theory perspective, a halving genesis for the collective distorting modes is revealed as the natural pathway for hydrodynamic crystal melting.

2. Optical control of spatially localized red blood cell activity by holographic tweezing

Abstract

Red blood cells possess unique biomechanical ability to squeeze through capillaries smaller than their size to enable gas and ion exchange. A key signature of their active biomechanics is the out-of-equilibrium fluctuation of the plasma membrane, also known as flickering motion. This active flickering is driven by motor proteins that connect the forces between the spectrin skeleton and the lipid bilayer. However, studying flickering motions in living red blood cells is challenging without altering their physical properties. Here, we implemented a holographic optical tweezer that sculpted a laser beam to create a force field distributed directly along the membrane equatorial contour. We show heterogeneous membrane flickering activity driven by membrane kickers in free-standing cells. Then we inhibited the active kickers by optical forces under minimal invasion, thus benchmarking the active motion against thermal fluctuations. 4. Electrically driven random lasing from a modified Fabry-Perot laser diode

Abstract

Random lasers (RLs) are intriguing devices with promising applications as light sources for imaging, sensing, super resolution spectral analysis or complex networks engineering. RLs can be obtained from optically pumped dyes, optical fibers and crystals, or electrically pumped semiconductor heterostructures. Semicon-ductor RLs are usually fabricated by introducing scattering defects into the active layer, adding a degree of complexity to the fabrication process and losing the ease of realization potentially offered by disordered structures. Ready availability of electrically pumped RLs, avoiding costly fabrication approach, would boost the use of these devices in research and applications. Here, we realize an incoherent semiconductor RL by simply processing the output mirror of an off-the-shelf Fabry-Perot laser diode via controlled laser ablation. Optical feedback provided by the intact back mirror and the ablated front mirror results in multi-mode ran-dom lasing with low spatial coherence and speckled output emission profile., Comment: Main text: 8 pages and 5 figures. 5. Moulding hydrodynamic 2D-crystals upon parametric Faraday waves in shear-functionalized water surfaces

Abstract

Faraday waves (FWs), or surface waves oscillating at half of the natural frequency when a liquid is vertically vibrated, are archetypes of ordering transitions on liquid surfaces. The existence of unbounded FW-patterns sustained upon bulk frictional stresses has been evidenced in highly viscous fluids. However, the role of surface rigidity has not been investigated so far. Here, we demonstrate that dynamically frozen FWs that we call 2D-hydrodynamic crystals do appear as ordered patterns of nonlinear surface modes in water surfaces functionalized with soluble (bio)surfactants endowing in-plane shear stiffness. The strong phase coherence in conjunction with the increased surface rigidity bear the FW-ordering transition, upon which the hydrodynamic crystals were reversibly molded by parametric control of their degree of order. Crystal symmetry and unit cell size were tuned depending on the FW-dispersion regime. The hydrodynamic crystals here discovered could be exploited in touchless strategies of soft matter scaffolding. Particularly, the surface-directed synthesis of structured materials based on colloids or polymers and cell culture patterns for tissue engineering could be ameliorated under external control of FW-coherence

6. End-coupled random lasers: a basis for artificial neural networks

Abstract

Light interference in strongly disordered photonic media can generate lasers where random modes are amplified in unpredictable way. The ease of fabrication, along with their low coherence caused by multiple small-linewidth peaks, made random lasers (RL) emerging, efficient, speckle-free light sources and a means to achieve spectral super-resolution. With potential to become a mature and accessible technology, their complex system's nature furnishes endless opportunities to unveil fundamental physics, since they can act as elements of optical network architectures. To date no experimental studies have analyzed the optical interaction between independent resonators in networks of RLs. Realizing RLs with a pumped strip joining two rough mirrors, we experimentally investigate and numerically simulate the emergence of networks when, by sharing scattering centers, RLs become coupled. We prove that the emission of a single RL can be manipulated by the action of others in the network, giving rise to substantial peak rearrangements and energy redistribution, fingerprint of mode coupling. Our findings, involving a few coupled RLs, firmly set the basis for the study of full-grown photonic networks. Abstract

In this thesis we experimentally developed high-resolution groundbreaking imaging techniques and novel methods suitable for nanophotonics materials. The experimental results are carefully supported by theory and numerical calculations. We engineered the propagation of light by exploiting devices that strongly localize electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale. The proposed techniques have a large field of application. We deeply investigated ordered and disordered based single and coupled nano-resonators, called photonicmolecules, and develop a laser-assisted local oxidation of the dielectric environment. These results put the basis for an unprecedented investigation of light behaviour in optical nano-resonators. Therefore, they would pave the way for novel devices that exploit the strong coupling regime between single light emitters and localized optical modes.

10. Networks of random lasers: current perspective and future challenges [Invited]

Abstract

Artificial neural networks are widely used in many different applications because of their ability to deal with a range of complex problems generally involving massive data sets. These networks are made up of nodes, connections, and nonlinear response connections, which are typically implemented as software code running on ordinary electronic computers. In such systems, electrons, with their advantages and drawbacks, are in charge of storing, processing, and transmitting information. Signal processing in the optical domain can provide ultrafast, parallel operation, nonlinear dynamics, and high energy efficiency, making photonics a suitable technology for the realization of neuroinspired computing platforms. This advantage stimulated the development of photonics neural networks based on single and multiple lasers with classical optical cavities. Recently, networks made of random lasers emerged as a novel concept that uses randomly placed scattering elements to create nonlinearity and complexity in photonics neural networks. In this review paper, we present the general framework for networks of coupled lasers, discuss recent advances in networks of random lasers, and outline future directions in this area. We also examine the challenges and limitations of using random lasers in photonic networks, as well as potential solutions. 11. Tailoring the photon hopping by nearest and next-nearest-neighbour interaction in photonic arrays

Abstract

Arrays of photonic cavities are relevant structures for developing large-scale photonic integrated circuits and for investigating basic quantum electrodynamics phenomena, due to the photon hopping between interacting nanoresonators. Here, we investigate, by means of scanning near-field spectroscopy, numerical calculations and an analytical model, the role of different neighboring interactions that give rise to delocalized supermodes in different photonic crystal array configurations. The systems under investigation consist of three nominally identical two-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavities on membrane aligned along the two symmetry axes of the triangular photonic crystal lattice. We find that the nearest and next-nearest-neighbour coupling terms can be of the same relevance. In this case, a non-intuitive picture describes the resonant modes, and the photon hopping between adjacent nano-resonators is strongly affected. Our findings prove that exotic configurations and even post-fabrication engineering of coupled nanoresonators could directly tailor the mode spatial distribution and the group velocity in coupled resonator optical waveguides., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

High-index dielectric nanostructures have emerged as an appealing complement to plasmonic nanostructures, offering similar light management capabilities at the nanoscale but free from the inherent optical losses. Despite the great interest in these all-dielectric architectures, their fabrication still requires cumbersome fabrication techniques that limit their implementation in many applications. Hence, the great interest in alternative scalable procedures. Among those, the fabrication of silicon spheres is at the forefront, with several routes available in the literature. However, the exploitation of the Mie modes sustained by these silicon resonators is limited over large areas by polydispersity or a lack of long-range order. Here, we present an all-dielectric metamaterial fabricated with a low cost and highly scalable technique: a combination of soft imprinting nanolithography and chemical vapor deposition. The resulting all-dielectric metasurface is composed of an array of silicon hemispheres on top of a high refractive index dielectric substrate. This architecture allows the exploitation of high-quality Mie resonances at a large scale due to the high monodispersity of the hemispheres organized in a single crystal two-dimensional lattice. The optical response of the metasurface can be engineered by the design parameters of the nanoimprinted structure. We further demonstrate the potential of this platform to enhance light emission by coupling dye molecules to the sustained Mie resonances and measuring both an eight-fold amplified signal and a triple lifetime reduction.

Abstract

The present invention generally relates to a random laser coupling system comprising at least three spatially distanced random-lasing light-scattering centres and at least two laser-pumping stripes, wherein each laser-pumping stripe connects two of said light-scattering centres, configuring at least two random laser resonators with spatially localised feedback. Advantageously in the invention, one of the at least three light-scattering centres is connected to two of the laser-pumping stripes, so that the at least two random laser resonators share one of the light- scattering centres. The invention also refers to a method for coupling random lasers comprising the use of said random laser coupling system. Abstract

The non-Hermitian nature of confined photonic modes is described by the electric complex modal volume, VE, which represents a key parameter that leads to counterintuitive effects, such as negative modal contribution to the local density of states and non-Lorentzian lineshapes. Here, we address the magnetic counterpart of VE by means of near-field perturbation experiments in a photonic crystal slab cavity. We study the relevant role played by the imaginary part of the magnetic modal volume, VH, which can increase the quality factor of the confined modes by means of a local external magnetic perturbation. We show how a mapping of the spatial distribution of both the real and imaginary parts of VH can be inferred by near-field experiments employing Al-covered near-field tips. Our findings deepen the role of the magnetic component of light and could open a new route in employing metamaterials, magnetic quantum emitters, and topological photonics.

Abstract

[EN] Complex systems involving networks have attracted strong multidisciplinary attention since they are predicted to sustain fascinating phase transitions in the proximity of the percolation threshold. Developing stable and compact archetypes that allow one to experimentally study physical properties around the percolation threshold remains a major challenge. In nanoscale systems, this achievement is rare since it is tied to the ability to control the intentional disorder and perform a vast statistical analysis of cluster configurations. Here, a self‐assembly method to fabricate perfectly ordered structures where random defects can be introduced is presented. Building binary crystals from two types of dielectric nanospheres and selectively removing one of them creates vacancies at random lattice positions that form a complex network of clusters. Vacancy content can be easily controlled and raised even beyond the percolation threshold. In these structures, the distribution of cluster sizes as a function of vacancy density is analyzed. For moderate concentrations, it is found to be homogeneous throughout the structure and in good agreement with the assumption of a random vacancy distribution.

Abstract

In this review, we report on the design, fabrication, and characterization of photonic crystal arrays, made of two and three coupled nanocavities. The properties of the cavity modes depend directly on the shape of the nanocavities and on their geometrical arrangement. A non-negligible role is also played by the possible disorder because of the fabrication processes. The experimental results on the spatial distribution of the cavity modes and their physical characteristics, like polarization and parity, are described and compared with the numerical simulations. Moreover, an innovative approach to deterministically couple the single emitters to the cavity modes is described. The possibility to image the mode spatial distribution, in single and coupled nanocavities, combined with the control of the emitter spatial position allows for a deterministic approach for the study of cavity quantum electrodynamics phenomena and for the development of new photonic-based applications.

Abstract

International audience; On-chip integration of all photonic components in the silicon platform is an important goal to accomplish high efficiency, low energy consumption, low cost and device miniaturization. However, silicon does not have efficient light emission or detection in the telecommunication wavelength range (close to 1.3$\mu$m and 1.55$\mu$m). Hence, hybrid integration of III-V materials or germanium is commonly adopted for the implementation of lasers and photodetectors. Nevertheless, these heterogeneous integration schemes compromise the low cost of using silicon.

Abstract

International audience; Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are known for their exceptional physical properties ranging from mechanics to electronics and optics. These properties are expected to give rise to innovative applications, especially when nanotubes are incorporated in new functional devices. However, the conception of an effective SWNT-based electronic or optoelectronic technology faces three main concerns: the extraction of semiconducting SWNTs having the desired optoelectronic characteristics from the as-synthetized poly-disperse mixture; the deposition of high nanotube concentrations at desired areas to increases transport and optical performances and the alignment of nanotubes on the substrate. Using an effective polymer-assisted sorting approach, we obtain highly-selective separation of semiconducting SWNTs that can be coupled with optoelectronic silicon-based devices operating at the telecom wavelength of 1.5 µm. Our modified evaporative self-assembly approach can deposit concentrated SWNT networks with configurations varying from random to highly-oriented assembly. In the latter case, the obtained orientation is particularly favorable for device fabrication and operation. Several configurations enabling photo-detection and electroluminescence at the chip level are currently under investigation and the latest results will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; Hybrid structures are needed to fully exploit the great advantages of Si photonics and different approaches have been addressed where Si devices are bonded to different materials and nanostructures. Here we experimentally study the use of semiconductor carbon nanotubes for emission in the 1300 nm wavelength range to functionalize Si photonic structures in view of optoelectronic applications. The Si microrings are fully characterized by near field forward resonant scattering with 100 nm resolution. We show that both TE and TM modes can be addressed on the top of the microrings in a vectorial imaging of the in-plane polarization components. We coupled the Si microresonators with selected carbon nanotubes for high photoluminescence emission. Coupling of the nanotubes with the evanescent tails in air of the electric field localized in the photonic modes of the microresonators is demonstrated by sharp resonances overimposed to the nanotube emission bands. By mapping the Si and the nanotubes emission we demonstrate that strong enhancement of the nanotubes photoluminescence can be achieved both in the photonic modes of microdisks and slot microrings, whenever the spatial overlap between nanoemitters and photonic modes is fulfilled.
