Abstract

A nonlinear PDE featuring flux limitation effects together with those of the porous media equation (nonlinear Fokker-Planck) is presented in this paper. We analyze the balance of such diverse effects through the study of the existence and qualitative behavior of some admissible patterns, namely traveling wave solutions, to this singular reaction-difusion equation. We show the existence and qualitative behavior of different types of traveling waves: classical profiles for wave speeds high enough, and discontinuous waves that are reminiscent of hyperbolic shock waves when the wave speed lowers below a certain threshold. Some of these solutions are of particular relevance as they provide models by which the whole solution (and not just the bulk of it, as it is the case with classical traveling waves) spreads through the medium with finite speed., Comment: 41 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We study the relativistic heat equation in one space dimension. We prove a local regularity result when the initial datum is locally Lipschitz in its support. We propose a numerical scheme that captures the known features of the solutions and allows for analysing further properties of their qualitative behavior.

Abstract

We prove the existence of a finite extinction time for the solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the total variation flow. For the Neumann problem, we prove that the solutions reach the average of its initial datum in finite time. The asymptotic profile of the solutions of the Dirichlet problem is also studied. It is shown that the profiles are nonzero solutions of an eigenvalue-type problem that seems to be unexplored in the previous literature. The propagation of the support is analyzed in the radial case showing a behaviour entirely different to the case of the problem associated with the p-Laplacian operator. Presented at the GHRSST XXIII international science team meeting, 27 June-1 July 2022, online and in-person (Barcelona). #GHRSST23 Short abstract The NOAA/NASA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR) Oceans Pathfinder Project was used to conduct a daily climatology in order to produce initial SST conditions for the operation of a regional real-time Weather Forecast System (WFS) based on the Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (RAMS). Previous studies have evaluated the importance of a well-defined SST for the simulation and forecast of heavy rainfall events, both in terms of the precipitation distribution and intensity. Therefore, an appropriate representation of this parameter should improve the prediction of these weather events. RAMS uses global monthly climatological data at 1 degree resolution (about 100 km) by default. To improve this spatial and temporal resolution, the AVHRR 4 km SST product was used to substitute the original SST field used by RAMS. The current methodology used this dataset to obtain a daily value for each grid point within the whole simulation grid, computed as the climatological mean of the whole time series, considering a 25-year period. An SST map for the simulation region and for each day of the year is then created, being accessible at any time. The corresponding map is then formatted to be directly incorporated into RAMS before a new simulation-cycle starts. The methodology has been developed to be flexible enough to permit not only a continuous update of the climatological database when more data becomes available, but also to implement other SST data sources, such as GHRSST products.
