Abstract

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in men and the second leading cause in women. Smoking cessation is the most effective measure to prevent development of lung cancer. Early detection trials with chest x-ray and sputum cytology failed to show reduction lung cancer mortality, despite the larger proportion of early-stage lung cancer diagnosed in the screened arm. The advent of low-dose chest computed tomography disclosed new perspectives. In 2011 an innovative, large prospective randomized controlled trial called "Reduced lung-cancer mortality with low-dose computed tomographic screening" was published and revealed reduced lung-cancer and overall mortality when persons at risk were annually screened by low-dose computed tomography compared to annually chest x-rays. At the moment, lung cancer screening cannot be recommended in general. It is uncertain for which duration screening should be continued, which screening modality is most appropriate and cost effective and what the psychological impact in case of indeterminate findings is. To avoid lung cancer screening programs being started imprudently, the Swiss healthcare system needs a provider independent commission mandated to continuously monitor ongoing screening trials, evaluate the results as well as the economical aspects, and make evidence based recommendations.

Abstract

A recent study (Tannan et al., 2006) showed that pre-exposure of a skin region to a 5 sec 25 Hz flutter stimulus (“adaptation”) results in an approximately 2-fold improvement in the ability of neurologically healthy human adults to localize mechanical stimulation delivered to the same skin region that received the adapting stimulation. Tannan et al. (Tannan et al., 2006) proposed that tactile spatial discriminative performance is improved following adaptation because adaptation is accompanied by an increase in the spatial contrast in the response of contralateral primary somatosensory cortex (SI) to mechanical skin stimulation – an effect identified in previous imaging studies of SI cortex in anesthetized non-human primates (e.g., Simons et al., 2005; Tommerdahl et al., 2002; Whitsel et al., 1989).

Such widespread prevalence suggests sensory hypersensitivity is a core feature of the disorder, but its severity and association with other clinical features of TS remain largely unexplored. Complicating matters, sensory hypersensitivity has been observed in two neurodevelopmental disorders commonly comorbid with TS: obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).Objective: We sought to measure sensory hypersensitivity in TS patients relative to healthy controls and to investigate the relationship of sensory hypersensitivity with OCD and ADHD symptoms in the context of TS.Methods: We recruited 34 adults with TS or chronic tic disorder to undergo evaluation with the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) and a battery of validated self-report instruments assessing sensory hypersensitivity (Sensory Gating Inventory, SGI; Sensory Perception Quotient, SPQ), premonitory urge (Premonitory Urge to Tic Scale, PUTS), OCD (Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, DOCS), and ADHD (Adult ADHD Self-Report Screening Scale for DSM-5, ASRS-V). Age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited to complete SGI and psychiatric measures.Results: SGI and SPQ scores strongly correlated (rs = − 0.73, p < 0.0001) within patients. SGI total score was significantly higher in patients versus controls (119.0 vs 67.6, U =− 5.3, p < 0.0001), indicating greater sensory hypersensitivity in the tic disorder group. SGI score correlated modestly with PUTS, DOCS, and ASRS-V scores but not with YGTSS total tic score. Hierarchical linear regression analysis revealed that, of the tested variables, only DOCS score contributed significantly to mean SGI score, with β ranging from 1.03 (p = 0.044) to 1.41 (p = 0.001). A simple linear regression model with DOCS as the independent variable accounted for 31.9% of SGI score variance.Conclusion: Sensory hypersensitivity is prominent in adults with tic disorder and is independently associated with obsessive-compulsive symptom severity.Keywords: Tourette syndrome, tic disorder, sensory hypersensitivity, sensory sensitivity, obsessive-compulsive symptoms

Abstract

Fluorescence transient (FT) analysis (fast kinetics) was carried out on sun and shade leaves of beech seedlings in an experimental field at Curno (North Italy), during the 2008 growing season (June–August). The aim of the research was to determine: (1) morphology in sun leaves as long term acclimation to high light; (2) short term responses to high light, i.e. during the course of the day; (3) evolution of responses during the growing season and the ageing process. Sun leaves differ from shade leaves by their lower trapping capacity (expressed by the ratio FV/FM) and higher capacity to reduce end acceptors beyond PSI (expressed by phase I–P of the FT). These features were assessed at pre-dawn, when the entire plant is fully dark-adapted. Short term responses (differences between midday and pre-dawn assessments) occur especially in sun leaves, indicating that the photosynthetic machinery reacts to the high excitation pressure by increasing photochemical and non-photochemical de-excitation processes. Other responses concern the inactivation of the oxygen evolving system and a stability loss of the tripartite system reaction centre (RC) – harvesting light complex – core antenna, expressed by the onset of K and L-bands at midday. Sun leaves are well acclimated to high light from a structural and functional point of view, however, the irradiance at midday provokes conditions of instability in the photosynthetic machinery, possibly through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production at both PSII and PSI sides. The temporal patterns across the growing season indicate the progression of senescence processes, that are more pronounced in sun leaves which present a permanent (chronic) condition of photoinhibition. Differences between sun and shade leaves decrease over time.

Abstract

Two field exercises were carried out to compare chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements taken in the field by field teams working on the same project. In the first exercise (2007, Passo Pura, Ampezzo, Udine, Northern Italy) the operators took measurements on the same leaf areas (maintaining fixed leaf clips); in the second (2009, Monterotondo Marittimo, Grosseto, Central Italy) the teams worked independently, but addressing a common research question. The results of the first exercise showed that: (a) F(V)/F(M) was stable and had little variation among teams and instruments; (b) the results from the different teams correlated well; (c) the most suitable parameters of fast kinetics analysis are those measured on the normalized fluorescence transients. In the second exercise, when the teams worked independently, the results were much more variable and the correlations between measurements of different operators were weak. These results suggest that field chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements taken by different teams/operators can be comparable only if particular care is taken to the internal variability of the samples and a standardized sampling strategy is applied. A statistically sound representation of a population can be then reached.

Abstract

Analysis of the variability in photosynthetic properties and responses (within and among individuals) is important in assessing the impact of stress factors in plant population and communities, as well as in supporting remote sensing techniques. Photosynthesis parameters, namely the Performance Index (PIABS), assessed by direct fluorescence techniques, were measured during an open-top chamber experiment at Curno (North Italy) in 2005. This experiment consisted in treatments of seedlings belonging to different tree species, in non filtered (NF, i.e. treated with ambient air) and charcoal-filtered (CF, i.e. treated with air with 50% of ambient air ozone) air, in watered (W) and not watered (D) conditions. The variability of PIABS was tested by means of the coefficient of variation (CV% = standard deviation/mean expressed as percent). CV% changed over time: it is higher at the beginning of the season and lower in the central months of the summer. CV% was usually higher in stressful conditions and correlated negatively with PIABS. This finding indicates that moderate stress factors act selectively on different individuals, and individual differences within population are enhanced.

Abstract

This paper reports the findings of an open-top chamber experiment carried out in northern Italy (Forest nursery at Curno), during the 2004 and 2005 growth seasons, on Fagus sylvatica and Quercus robur seedlings and on Populus nigra cuttings, in order to test their photosynthesis response to ambient ozone. The experimental protocols were non-filtered air (NF), charcoal-filtered air (CF) and open air (OA). Tests performed included morphological features of leaves; development of foliar symptoms; chlorophyll content, determined by nondestructive means; chlorophyll fluorescence (direct fluorescence and JIP test) and gas exchanges and net photosynthesis (PN). Main findings were as follows: (1) symptoms occurred early and were extensive in P. nigra, and they occurred later in F. sylvatica, whereas early degeneration of chlorophyll occurred in late summer in Q. robur; (2) in conditions of ozone exposure, the three species all presented a decline in photosynthesis efficiency and a decrease in PN, regardless of the symptomatology they displayed; (3) leaf traits are predictors of species-specific sensitivity to ozone—the high density of Q. robur foliar tissues prevents this species from developing visible symptoms and reduces the extent of physiological responses and (4) physiological responses varied from year to year in the same species—responses were lower in the second year of the experiment, when plants had become better acclimatized to plot conditions.
