1. Pet Loss in an Urban Firestorm: Grief and Hope after Colorado’s Marshall Fire

Abstract

Although much of the literature on pets in disasters associates the failure to evacuate pets with a weak or absent human–animal bond, rapid-onset disasters challenge the foundations of that claim. Colorado’s Marshall Fire, which occurred on 30 December 2021, took the lives of more than 1000 pets. The fire began in open grassland and quickly became an “urban firestorm” when it spread into densely populated areas. Due to the timing of the fire’s onset, owners could not return home to rescue their pets. Although first responders, volunteers, and other evacuees rescued some animals, many died inside their homes. Analysis of qualitative interviews with a small sample of pet owners whose animals died in the fire reveal the factors that prevented owners from rescuing their pets. Through analysis of traditional and social media, and emergency notifications, this research presents a timeline of events on the day of the fire and examines pitfalls in evacuation notification. Participant observation and field conversations provide insight into the impact of the fire on veterinary clinics. The study concludes with suggestions intended to reduce future mass deaths of animals.

Abstract

BackgroundThe family of Suppressor of Cytokine Signaling (SOCS) acts as a controller of the duration and intensity of cytokine function by negatively regulating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. SOCS’ role in inflammatory diseases in animal models is well demonstrated. However, its role in the development of human disease is still under investigation. SOCS3 plays an important role in tumor development where its downregulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various solid tumors such as triple-negative breast cancer.AimThe aim of this work was to study (1) the expression of SOCS3 in smokers’ lungs and its relation to the degree of inflammation and (2) SOCS3 regulation by microRNA (miRNA) in alveolar-macrophage (AM)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL).MethodsGroup A: 35 smokers’ [19 with COPD (SC) and 16 without COPD (S)] and 9 nonsmokers (NS); SOCS3, TNFα in AM, and CD8+ T cells were quantified by immunohistochemistry, in lung tissue. Group B: additional 9 SC, 11 S, and 5 NS; AM-EVs expressing SOCS3 (CD14+SOCS3+) and SOCS3 suppressors miRNA-19a-3p and 221-3p in EVs were quantified by flow cytometry and PCR, in BAL.ResultsThe percentage of SOCS3+ AM was higher in SC [68 (6.6–99)%] and S [48 (8–100)%] than in NS [9.6 (1.9–61)%; p = 0.002; p = 0.03] and correlated with % of TNFα+AM (r = 0.48; p = 0.0009) and CD8+ T cells (r = 0.44; p = 0.0029). In BAL, the CD14+SOCS3+ EVs/μL were increased in SC [33 (21–74)] compared to S [16 (8–37); p = 0.03] and NS [9 (7–21); p = 0.003]. Conversely, miRNA-19a-3p and miRNA-221-3p expression were increased in S when compared to SC [19 (2–53) vs. 3 (0.6–8); p = 0.03 and 3 (0.005–9.6) vs. 0.2 (0.08–0.7); p = 0.05].ConclusionsThe suppressor function of SOCS3 in COPD seems to be overridden by other factors and does not follow the animal-model paradigm. Expression of SOCS3 in BAL macrophage-derived EVs might be useful to assess the degree of inflammation and possible progression of COPD. Downregulation of SOCS3, by miRNA, in smokers without COPD might contribute to the risk of developing cancer in these patients.

Abstract

Depending on local cues, macrophages can polarize into classically activated (M1) or alternatively activated (M2) phenotypes. This study investigates the impact of polarized macrophage-derived Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) (M1 and M2) and their cargo of miRNA-19a-3p and miRNA-425-5p on TGF-β production in lung fibroblasts. EVs were isolated from supernatants of M0, M1, and M2 macrophages and quantified using nanoscale flow cytometry prior to fibroblast stimulation. The concentration of TGF-β in fibroblast supernatants was measured using ELISA assays. The expression levels of miRNA-19a-3p and miRNA-425-5p were assessed via TaqMan-qPCR. TGF-β production after stimulation with M0-derived EVs and with M1-derived EVs increased significantly compared to untreated fibroblasts. miRNA-425-5p, but not miRNA-19a-3p, was significantly upregulated in M2-derived EVs compared to M0- and M1-derived EVs. This study demonstrates that EVs derived from both M0 and M1 polarized macrophages induce the production of TGF-β in fibroblasts, with potential regulation by miRNA-425-5p.

Abstract

The Gender Inequality Index is a country-level measure of gender inequality based on women's levels of reproductive health, social and political empowerment, and labor-market representation. In two studies, we tested the validity of the GII-S, a state-level measure of gender inequality in the USA. In Study 1, the GII-S was associated with objective and subjective measures of wellness among women, including life satisfaction, financial well-being, and perceptions of safety. GII-S was not associated with the Gini coefficient, a well-established measure of economic inequality, suggesting that gender and economic disparities represent distinct aspects of social inequality. Study 2 tested the link between GII-S scores and collective action-specifically, participation in the #MeToo movement promoting awareness of sexual harassment and violence against women. Analysis of geo-localized messages on the Twitter social media platform reveals that higher GII-S scores were associated with fewer tweets containing the #MeToo hashtag. Moreover, GII-S was associated with state-level political orientation: the more conservative a state, the higher its level of gender inequality. Results are discussed in terms of possible socio-cognitive processes underpinning the association between gender inequality and sensitivity to violence against women.

22. Effective magnetic susceptibility of suspensions

Abstract

We characterize how suspensions of magnetic particles in a liquid respond to a magnetic field in terms of the effective magnetic susceptibility $\chi_{eff}$ using inductance measurements. We test a model that predicts how $\chi_{eff}$ varies due to demagnetization, as a function of sample aspect ratio, particle packing fraction, and particle aspect ratio. For spherical particles or cylindrical particles aligned with external magnetic field, the model can be fitted to the measured data with agreement within 17\%. However, we find that the random alignment of particles relative to the magnetic field plays a role, reducing $\chi_{eff}$ by a factor of 3 in some cases, which is not accounted for in models yet. While suspensions are predicted to have $\chi_{eff}$ that approach the particle material susceptibility in the limit of large particle aspect ratio, instead we find a much smaller particle aspect ratio where $\chi_{eff}$ is maximized. A prediction that $\chi_{eff}$ approaches the bulk material susceptibility in the limit of the packing fraction of the liquid-solid transition also fails. 26. Development of magnetic liquid metal suspensions for magnetohydrodynamics

Abstract

A new class of materials is developed that is a liquid with both high conductivity and magnetic susceptibility for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) applications. We develop a general method for making such suspensions and demonstrate that various magnetic and non-magnetic metal particles, from 40 nm - 500 microns in diameter, can be suspended in liquid gallium and its alloys. The method uses an acid solution to prevent oxidation of the liquid metal and metallic particles, which allows wetting and thus suspending. We can increase the magnetic permeability by a factor of 5.0 by controlling the packing fraction of magnetic particles, which gives these materials the potential to exhibit strong MHD effects on the laboratory scale that are usually only observable in the cores of planets and stars. Abstract

While the relationship between loneliness and psychological distress is well documented, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are less clear. One factor known to be related to loneliness as well as psychological distress, is social support, with some studies suggesting that support–both received and provided–can serve as a mechanism to reduce the distress associated with loneliness. In this paper we examine the mediating role of both aspects of support in the relationship between loneliness and psychological distress in the COVID-19 context. We used a multi-country dataset collected at two timepoints during the pandemic; the first during the early stages (N = 6,842, 11 countries) and the second collected for a subset of countries (N = 1,299, 3 countries) 3 months later. Across all eleven countries, results revealed significant positive associations between loneliness and distress. Furthermore, using longitudinal data, we investigated the directionality of this relationship and found that increased loneliness over time was associated with increased psychological distress. The data also showed that both feeling unsupported and feeling unable to provide support to others mediated this relationship. These findings point to the need to facilitate people's ability to draw effective social support and help others–particularly at times when social connectedness is threatened–as a way of alleviating the psychological distress that commonly presents with loneliness.

Abstract

Artificial teeth in dental training have become a valuable tool for students to gain hands-on experience in a safe and controlled environment. This training method allows students to practice various dental procedures and develop their skills without putting patients at risk. Artificial teeth can be used to simulate dental conditions, allowing students to gain experience in dealing with various situations and techniques. Although previous studies in human dentistry have demonstrated the feasibility of using 3D-printed teeth for teaching endodontic procedures such as root canal therapy, similar research has yet to be conducted in the veterinary field. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of creating 3D-printed teeth from an adult dog skull and validate their use as an alternative training tool for root canal therapy in this species. For this, cone beam computed tomography images from a medium-sized dog skull were used to replicate its teeth using a digital 3D printing system. Then, artificial mandibular first molar teeth and a 24-question survey were sent to specialized veterinary dentistry practitioners in Brazil to assess their perception of the model's characteristics during endodontic treatment. In conclusion, it was feasible to create 3D-printed models of dog teeth with high accuracy for the endodontic system. Despite the differences in the properties of the two materials between natural and artificial teeth, it was possible to use the artificial tooth as a training device for conventional endodontic treatment in dogs. Abstract

High resolution optical spectroscopy methods are demanding in terms of either technology, equipment, complexity, time or a combination of these. Here we demonstrate an optical spectroscopy method that is capable of resolving spectral features beyond that of the spin fine structure and homogeneous linewidth of single quantum dots (QDs) using a standard, easy-to-use spectrometer setup. This method incorporates both laser and photoluminescence spectroscopy, combining the advantage of laser line-width limited resolution with multi-channel photoluminescence detection. Such a scheme allows for considerable improvement of resolution over that of a common single-stage spectrometer. The method uses phonons to assist in the measurement of the photoluminescence of a single quantum dot after resonant excitation of its ground state transition. The phonon's energy difference allows one to separate and filter out the laser light exciting the quantum dot. An advantageous feature of this method is its straight forward integration into standard spectroscopy setups, which are accessible to most researchers.

Abstract

Resumo O presente artigo tem como objetivo conhecer os impactos da longevidade na família multigeracional e é resultado de uma pesquisa desenvolvida no Núcleo de Estudos do Envelhecimento da Universidade de Caxias do Sul, denominada “A família multigeracional em Caxias do Sul”, no período de 2004-2006. A amostra da pesquisa é composta por 27 famílias multigeracionais do município de Caxias do Sul - RS, com a participação de três pessoas de gerações diferentes de uma mesma família, perfazendo um total de 81 pessoas que compõem uma amostra intencional, orientada e conveniente. A metodologia utilizada envolve análise de conteúdo e abordagem dialética. Com os resultados da pesquisa, pretende-se contribuir para a discussão dos problemas que a família enfrenta no convívio com idosos e das dificuldades que os mesmos sofrem no ambiente familiar. Conhecer esses desafios e propor alternativas para enfrentá-los, de modo a qualificar a vida de relações das pessoas individualmente e da própria família, como instituição, são necessidades relevantes.
