Abstract

In this paper we present preliminary results of a new approach for interactive visualization of historical fabrics at yarn level based on models using Signed Distance Functions. They are compared with the results of Virtual Loom, an interactive application for rendering historical fabrics from the 15th to the 19th century, resulting from the European SilkNow project [PSA*18]. Yarns used on these fabrics has an special complexity due to a metallic cover that appears in some elements of the fabric. This new approach is based on rendering using Sphere Tracing. 18. A comparative study on the use of spatiotemporal maps for teaching data visualization in a hybrid learning context.

Abstract

Data visualization is a complex matter and so is teaching it in the context of engineering and data science. Even more challenging is teaching in a midst of once in a century pandemic. In this paper, we show the results of a workshop conducted with second-year students on a university degree in data science, which took place in the context of pandemic restrictions in a hybrid learning environment. About half of the students were in the classroom and the other half at home. They learned to use STMaps, a tool developed in the scope of the SILKNOW project. We transferred research outcomes to the classroom; similarly, the results of evaluating the tool were transferred to the project. But more importantly, we found insights that the learning process of students that were online was not the same quality as of those that were physically in the classroom. While both groups performed well in terms of correctly fulfilling the tasks proposed during the workshop, the students at home were less motivated and perceived the tasks more cumbersome to achieve. From a research perspective, this activity was perceived as very useful, and similar activities are being planned for each academic year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The documentation, dissemination, and enhancement of Cultural Heritage is of great relevance. To that end, technological tools and interactive solutions (e.g., 3D models) have become increasingly popular. Historical silk fabrics are nearly flat objects, very fragile and with complex internal geometries, related to different weaving techniques and types of yarns. These characteristics make it difficult to properly document them, at the yarn level, with current technologies. In this paper, we bring a new methodology to virtually represent such heritage and produce 3D printouts, also making it highly interactive through the tool Virtual Loom. Our work involves sustainability from different perspectives: (1) The traditional production of silk fabrics respects the environment, (2) Virtual Loom allows the studying of silk heritage while avoiding their degradation, (3) Virtual Loom allows creative industries to save money and materials, (4) current research on bioplastics for 3D printing contributes to environmental sustainability, (5) edutainment and gaming can also benefit from Virtual Loom, avoiding the need to acquire the original objects and enhancing creativity. The presented work has been carried out within the scope of the SILKNOW project to show some results and discuss the sustainability issues, from the production of traditional silk fabrics, to their dissemination by means of Virtual Loom and 3D printed shapes.
