Abstract

Literature on occupational risks among organic farmers is scarce. This study explored safety practices and non-fatal injuries among organic producers, and the role of sociodemographic, work, and farm characteristics on safety and injury. Cross sectional survey of certified organic crop producers in the Southwest (SW) region of the United States (US). The Organic Integrity Database was used for recruitment. Data were collected through an electronic and paper survey. Analyses were conducted on 115 cases; response rate was estimated at 25%. A high majority of respondents owned their operation and were younger than 65 years, male, educated beyond high-school, and non-Hispanic whites. Less than half had more than 10 years of experience in organic farming; one-third worked off the farm year-round. Safety practices were very basic despite the widespread use of equipment and machinery, and limited to wearing normal clothing and apparel such hats and glasses. About half of respondents (52.6%) reported non-fatal injuries in the past year; and one-third (32.7%) time lost due to injuries. The overall cumulative incidence rate was estimated at 5.3 injuries per 10 workers within the last year. The injury rate decreased with hours worked. Significant differences were found on gender and education level and safety practices, with female respondents and the more educated being more proactive in practicing safety. Those working less than 40 h/week, in farms smaller than 50 acres, using light machinery or compact utility tractors, and tractors without roll-over protection reported significantly higher injury frequency compared to their counterparts. This study contributes unique data on an essential workforce not captured by current occupational injury and illness surveillance systems. It identifies important personal and contextual factors that may contribute to safety and injury in this population. The findings indicate the need to promote safety and prevent injuries that result in work time lost. This study may also inform future occupational safety and health research and practice, including surveillance, injury prevention programs that target certain workers and production practices, and policies that support and protect the organic farmer. Molnar (1), Vanessa Casanova (1) Abstract: Although it is often assumed that food pantries are managed by middle-class directors whose social background differs significantly from that of their target populations, no systematic empirical evidence concerning this issue exists to date. Moreover, scholarship has yet to explore the extent to which the presumably distinctive social positions of pantry directors and clients might result in the stigmatization of poverty, social welfare programs, and the poor by agency directors. Drawing on insights from attribution theory, this study seeks to shed light on demographic and attitudinal differences between pantry directors and food-needy persons. The study begins by comparing the demographic characteristics of food pantry directors in a two-state region of the South (Alabama-Mississippi) with those of the food-needy population in the region. It then moves on to contrast attitudinal disparities between these directors and food-needy persons related to such issues as the causes of poverty, the effects of social welfare programs, and the character of those who utilize food assistance programs. Noteworthy differences in race, education, and religiosity emerge when comparing directors with the populations they serve; however, directors did not differ markedly from their potential clients in key social attitudes. When asked specifically about food pantry clients, directors responded with a mix of sympathy and suspicion. While a substantial portion of directors attribute poverty to structural causes, a significant number also characterize clients seeking food assistance as possibly having unsavory motivations for doing so. The study concludes with a discussion of the implications of these findings. A partir de então, os processos de elaboração de políticas públicas previdenciárias acabam sendo intercedidos por atores políticos vinculados tanto às ideias de proteção social quanto às ideias centradas no indivíduo, isto é, neoliberais. Estas últimas impulsionaram diversas reformas na estrutura do sistema previdenciário ao longo dos últimos anos, desde 1988. O trabalho se propôs a investigar a dinâmica através da qual a área previdenciária, enquanto espaço de formulação de políticas públicas sociais, tem sido principal alvo dos formuladores de políticas e atores políticos ligados aos interesses de mercado, buscando, assim, compreender o conteúdo dos discursos vinculados ao ideário neoliberal, seus embasamentos e a maneira como eles estruturam as propostas de reforma previdenciária em vigor nas últimas décadas no Brasil. Foram utilizadas como objeto de estudo as mais recentes propostas de reformas previdenciárias, quais sejam, a PEC nº 287/2016 e a PEC nº 06/2019. Como instrumento de análise desses processos políticos de reformas, para fim de possibilitar o entendimento de como a questão previdenciária comumente integra, de forma prioritária, a agenda do governo, adotou-se como abordagem teórico-analítica a Teoria dos Múltiplos Fluxos, desenvolvida por John Kingdon (2011) no campo de conhecimento de análise de políticas públicas. A partir da adoção desse modelo de análise e dos conceitos desenvolvidos por Kingdon (2011), buscou-se entender o motivo pelo qual a previdência social é vista como um problema público pelos atores políticos cujos interesses são vinculados ao mercado, de forma a ingressar frequentemente na agenda governamental, bem como por que a solução apresentada por esses interesses neoliberais se refere a uma política de corte de gastos públicos e privatização. Ao fim, propõe-se um percurso hábil à solução do problema relativo à possível supressão dos direitos sociais, a qual decorrente de propostas de reforma constitucional defendidas pelos atores políticos vinculados a interesses neoliberais e de mercado, através de uma proposta de intervenção no sentido de fomentar uma maior participação da sociedade, especialmente das pessoas mais necessitadas de proteção social, nas discussões e debates sobre reforma da previdência. As a result of the insertion of social rights in its constitutional texts, following a model of social protection that expanded in several countries, Brazil, after the promulgation of the Federal Constitution of 1988, creates an integrated Social Security system, among other policies, by Social Security. From then on, the processes of elaboration of public social security policies end up being interceded by political actors linked to the ideas of social protection as well as the ideas centered on the individual, that is, neoliberal. The latter have prompted a number of reforms in the structure of the social security system in recent years, since 1988. The paper aims to investigate the dynamics through which the social security area, as a space for the formulation of social public policies, has been the main target of the formulators of political and political actors linked to market interests, seeking to understand the content of the discourses linked to the neoliberal ideology, its foundations and the way in which they structure the social security reform proposals in force in the last decades in Brazil. The most recent proposals for social security reforms, namely PEC 287/2016 and PEC 06/2019, were used as the object of study. As an instrument for analyzing these political reform processes, in order to make it possible to understand how the social security issue commonly integrates, as a priority, the government's agenda, the Multiple Streams Model was developed as a theoretical-analytical approach developed by John Kingdon (2011) in the field of knowledge of public policy analysis. Based on the adoption of this model of analysis and the concepts developed by Kingdon (2011), the aim was to understand why social security is seen as a public problem by political actors whose interests are linked to the market, in order to enter frequently on the governmental agenda, as well as why the solution presented by these neoliberal interests refers to a policy of cutting public spending and privatization. Finally, it is proposed a skilful course to solve the problem of the possible suppression of social rights, which is the result of proposals for constitutional reform defended by political actors linked to neoliberal and market interests, through a proposal for intervention in the sense of foster greater participation of society, especially those most in need of social protection, in discussions and debates on pension reform.

23. Estás burda de loco y trabajas burda. Un 'nuevo' cuantificador en el español de Venezuela

Abstract

This work focuses on the description of burda (de), a Venezuelan Spanish locution with a quantifier and intensifier value close to "muy, en cantidad, demasiado". The first purpose is to check its adjectival and adverbial status, as well as the word categories it usually introduces. The results show that the most frequent structures are burda de + A (burda de dulce) and burda de + N (burda de esfuerzo), preceded by the verbs ser, tener and estar. To a lesser extent, the structure burda de introduces time, place and manner adverbs (burda de mal). Moreover, the construction burda ("mucho") is used as a verbal (se tardan burda) and adjectival intensifier, similar to "muy" but placed after the adjective instead (pana burda). Afterwards, an attempt is made to decipher its origin and grammaticalization process. Having verified that its use is not restricted to youthspeak, this work concludes that burda (de) is a belonging marker, in other words, a vernacular trait which would contribute in shaping the "national" identity of the speaker., El presente trabajo se centra en la descripción de burda (de), forma propia del español actual de Venezuela, con un valor cuantificador e intensificador cercano a "muy, en cantidad, demasiado". El primer objetivo es la comprobación de su estatuto adjetival y adverbial, así como las clases de palabras que puede acompañar. Los resultados permiten constatar que las estructuras más frecuentes son burda de + A (burda de dulce) y burda de + N (burda de esfuerzo), antecedidas por los verbos ser, tener y estar. En menor medida, burda de precede a adverbios de tiempo, lugar y manera (burda de mal). Por otro lado, la construcción burda ("mucho") sirve como intensificador verbal (se tardan burda) y adjetival, con un valor cercano a "muy" pero en posposición (pana burda). Después, se intenta descifrar su origen y proceso de gramaticalización. Constatado que su empleo no se restringe solo al ámbito del lenguaje juvenil, se concluye que burda (de) es un marcador de origen, es decir una forma vernácula que contribuiría a definir la identidad "nacional" del hablante.

25. 'El hotel está muy cercas de la playa', o la falsa pluralización del adverbio 'cerca' en el español de México

Abstract

This work introduces a review of the adverb cercas, particular to Mexican Spanish, as well as the social beliefs concerning its use, acceptance and geographical distribution. A general description of the adverb, its grammatical forms and semantic values is presented first, fo-llowed by a historical account of the phenomenon, which suggests its use reached its peak during modern Spanish. This article argues that this adverbial form is not a ‘pluralization’ of the adverb cerca, but rather the result of a morphological analogy process, as it has been also noted in other adverbial derivatives ending in -s (quizá > quizás). The data obtained from an online survey (answered by 848 Mexican native speakers) reveals the following: a) the adverb cercas is portrayed as a stigmatized form in Mexican Spanish; b) the speakers who reject this form (83% of those who recognized its existence) elicit reasons linked to norms, education or sociolects; c) the majority of its users are young (18-30 years), a social group that tends to break the standard norm; d) 58% of the sample considers cerca/ cercas to have different meanings, although the later form lacks a fixed meaning; the remaining 42% of the sample thinks it is the same adverb but in different forms (depending on the pre-sence of the adverbial suffix -s); and e) by correlating the socio-demographic data (age, sex) and the responses about the acceptance, use and values of the adverb cercas, statistically meaningful differences come to light., El presente trabajo ofrece una nueva visión de la forma adverbial cercas, propia del español de México, así como de las creencias sociales asociadas a su uso, aceptabilidad y distribu-ción geográfica. En primer lugar, se presenta una descripción general de este adverbio, su comportamiento gramatical y sus valores, así como la documentación histórica del fenó-meno, que sugiere un auge y empleo modernos en español. Se sostiene que esta forma no se trata de una ‘pluralización’ del adverbio cerca, sino que es el resultado de un proceso de analogía morfológica, tal y como ha ocurrido con otros adverbios con -s (quizá > quizás). Los datos recogidos en la encuesta realizada en línea (respondida por 848 hablantes nativos mexicanos) demuestran que: a) el adverbio cercas es una forma estigmatizada en el español mexicano; b) quienes la rechazan (83% de los informantes que reconocieron su existencia) aducen razones normativas, educativas o sociolectales; c) la mayoría de los informantes que hacen uso de esta forma son jóvenes (18-30 años), hablantes que tradicionalmente suelen apartarse de la norma estándar; d) el 58% de los participantes considera que las formas cerca y cercas presentan un significado diferente, aunque se constata la falta de fijación del sentido de cercas; para el 42% restante se trataría de un mismo adverbio con distintas formas (diferenciadas por la presencia del sufijo adverbial -s); y e) al correlacionar los datos sociodemográficos (edad, sexo) con las respuestas sobre la aceptación, el uso y los valores del adverbio cercas, se aprecian diferencias estadísticamente significativas.

26. A qualitative assessment of safe work practices in logging in the southern United States

Abstract

The logging industry is recognized as one of the most dangerous professions in the U.S., but little is known about safety management practices on remote logging sites.A total of six focus group sessions were held among logging supervisors and front line crew members in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas (N = 27 participants).Participants perceived that logging was a dangerous profession, but its risks had been mitigated in several ways, most notably through mechanization of timber harvesting. Log trucking-related incidents were widely identified as the primary source of risk for injury and death on logging work sites. Human error, in general, and being out of the machinery on the work site were highlighted as additional sources of risk.Participants indicated high levels of personal motivation to work in a safe manner but tended to underestimate workplace hazards and expressed widely varying levels of co-worker trust. Abstract

Background: The U.S. logging sector is among the most dangerous industrial sectors, with high fatality and non-fatal injury rates. Limited research has addressed work-related musculoskeletal disorders among logging machine operators (LMOs). The purpose of this study was to estimate the 12-month prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and the associated work-related risk factors among LMOs in the Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas (Ark-La-Tex) logging region. Methods: A self-administered 93-item questionnaire with six different sections: (1) demographics, (2) lifestyle and medical background, (3) work experience, (4) job training, (5) occupational heat-related stress, and (6) occupational injuries and MSS was administered to LMOs (n = 88) using Qualtrics Mobile Survey Software®. Poisson regression models were used to estimate crude prevalence ratios (PR), adjusted PR [aPR], and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: Regarding organizational, ergonomic, and handling equipment occupational factors and 12-month MSS prevalence, the adjusted model controlled for age, BMI, smoking status, and drinking status. For organizational, the most problematic factors for the lower back were performing a task over and over (63.2%) and working very fast, for short periods (60.0%). For ergonomics, the most problematic factor for the lower extremities was awkward or cramped conditions (58.1%) and for the lower back was bending/twisting back awkward (55.9%). Last, for handling equipment, the most problematic for both the lower back and lower extremities was handling or grasping small objects (57.1%). Conclusion: Our findings revealed associations between work-related MSS and specific job factors (e.g., organizational, ergonomic, handling equipment, etc.), extreme environmental conditions or environmental, and personal risk factors. In particular, study findings suggest lower back and lower extremities MSS are associated with the a majority of job-related risk factors, lower extremities with extreme environmental conditions, and neck and upper back with personal risk factors. Abstract

Background: Logging is recognized as one of the most dangerous industries in the United States (US), ranking among those with the highest occupational injury and fatality rates. Although logging operations in the Southeastern US have lower rates of injuries and fatalities compared to other regions of the US, due in part to the use of large machinery to fell timber as opposed to chainsaw felling, safety hazards continue to persist. The hazards present in the logging cut sites in which loggers operate may result in worker injury, illness, or fatality. Our objective was to develop, deliver, and evaluate a safety management and leadership training among logging contractors and supervisors using mobile tablets as a personal learning environment. Methods: A safety leadership and management training vignette was developed based on previously collected focus group needs assessment data. A non-random sample of 31 male logging supervisors received the safety leadership and management training on a mobile tablet. Kirkpatrick Levels 1, 2, and 3 training effectiveness evaluations were performed. Results: A statistically significant large effect size suggests safety knowledge was gained among training participants when comparing post-test scores to pre-test scores (Level-2). Participants rated their training experience favorably (Level-1), and applied knowledge gained from the training throughout their weekly work activities three months after training (Level-3). Conclusion: Our findings suggest the utilization of mobile learning techniques can be an effective means to deliver safety management and leadership training content to logging contractors and supervisors. Future trainings should be linguistically and literacy-level appropriate, as well as comprehensive in nature, including meaningful and relevant content. 33. Tema, rema y focalización: del enunciado al texto. Análisis de títulos y leads de prensa

Abstract

This present work studies the informative functions of theme-rheme and focus in the production of journalistic discourse, from the theoretical postulates of Gutiérrez (1997, 2000) and Pottier (1977, 1992, 1993). The analysis of these functions in the headlines and leads of Panorama journal shows the identification methods of theme (known information), rheme (given information) and focalization, used by the journalist to present the event. The application of intercase relations in this analysis allows the observation of the predicative choices of the speaker, and also serves as a resource to compare the natural order of the statement with the final result in the discourse level. In this work it is concluded: a) the final structure of the statement or text depends on the communicative purpose of the speaker, taking into account the informative needs of the interlocutor; b) there are many focalization mechanisms in written discourse that emphasize theme or rheme; c) thematic progression is a fundamental mechanism to contextualize and give cohesion to the text, as its rupture entails an ineffective and impertinent discourse from the informative point of view., El presente artículo estudia las funciones informativas tema-rema y foco en la producción del discurso periodístico, a partir de los planteamientos teóricos de Gutiérrez (1997, 2000) y Pottier (1977, 1992, 1993). El análisis de estas funciones en los titulares y leads del diario Panorama revela los mecanismos de identificación del tema (soporte), rema (aporte) y de focalización que utiliza el periodista para presentar el evento. La aplicación del esquema de las relaciones intercasuales en el análisis permite observar las elecciones predicativas del hablante, e igualmente sirve como recurso para contrastar el orden natural del enunciado con su resultado final en el nivel discursivo. En el trabajo se concluye: a) la estructura final del enunciado o texto depende de la intención comunicativa del hablante, en consideración de las necesidades informativas de su interlocutor; b) existen diversos mecanismos de focalización en el discurso escrito para la puesta en relieve del tema o el rema; c) la progresión temática es un mecanismo fundamental para la contextualización y cohesión en el texto, por lo que su ruptura conlleva a un discurso poco eficaz y pertinente desde el punto de vista informativo.

Abstract

The southeastern United States has become the most important timber producing region in the country. Despite increases in productivity, questions remain regarding the industry's role in developing, or failing to develop, rural communities in many of the poorest areas of the South. This article examines the recruitment and employment of migrant and guest workers for forest management work, specifically tree planting and reforestation. Based on semi-structured interviews with 35 H2B guest workers and 18 labor contractors the article analyzes the linkages between forest management labor recruitment, poverty, local labor markets, and timber productivity in the State of Alabama. We describe the wages, working conditions, organization, and workers' perspectives on forest management work in the South. We also describe the relationship between labor contracting in the southern forest products industry and the H2B guest workers program. We conclude with a discussion of the policy implications of an expanded guest worker program on rural communities and labor markets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Three Essays on the Pine Straw Industry in a Georgia Community

Abstract

This dissertation examines the pine straw industry and its interaction with labor, local communities and land in a community in Georgia. As a relatively new industry within the forest products sector, the pine straw industry provides local forest landowners with additional income from their forests and Latino immigrants with year-round employment. The first study is entitled, “A Political Ecology of Pine Straw Harvesting.” With a political ecology framework, I examine the interaction between government policies and programs, which precipitated the commodification of pine straw and how they contribute to a dependence on an immigrant workforce, the majority of whom are undocumented. “Raking it In: The Commodification of Pine Straw in the Southeast” is the second study. In it, pine straw is examined as a non-timber forest product and comparisons are made between the harvesting of this particular non-timber forest product on private land as opposed to publicly owned and Forest Service land. I use the concepts of access to, and commercialization and conservation of the resource as a point of comparison. Finally, I examine the role of forest labor contractors and social networks in procuring labor for this particular industry in the last study entitled, “In a Class of Their Own: Forest Labor Contractors in the Pine Straw Industry.” Forty-two pine straw harvesters, four forest labor contractors, eight landowners and four pine straw dealers were interviewed for this study. Interviews were semi-structured face-to-face interviews or telephone interviews. Data collected focused on the length of time each actor had been involved in the industry and precipitating factors to their involvement. For harvesters, the focus was on how they obtained work, how they were paid, harvesters’ basic ecological knowledge and information related to social networks. These interviews closely paralleled interviews with pine straw dealers who were their indirect employers. Landowner interviews involved questions related to the amount of forest land owned, how their land was used prior to planting it in timber and their experience with the industry and the Latino labor force. This research provides a look at a specific industry within the Southeast that has grown out of land use changes and immigration policy. It is one centered on a once marginal forest by-product, which now contributes more than $60 million annually to Georgia’s economy. Although it has a largely regional market, it benefits from a globalized labor force.

Abstract

The substandard nature of the housing in which most farmworkers live has detrimental effects on their health, as well as on their children's health and development. However, little research has directly documented associations between farmworker housing and health; existing research is not always comparable due to differences in design and measurement. Comparative data can help determine actual causal links between housing characteristics and farmworker health and help to evaluate the efficacy of current housing policy. The goal of this paper is to provide guidelines promoting comparable research on farmworker housing and the association of this housing with health. This paper reviews general concepts relevant to measuring farmworker housing and health, issues that should be considered in designing farmworker housing and health research, data collection methods, and measures.
